| Species in order of appearance from left to right: Blue Spotted Salamander (missing half its tail😮), Green Frog (hiding in a cute little hole), same green frog but closer pic, Leopard Frog, Spring Peeper (this one was kind enough to pose for me on that blade of grass and show off the X on its back) submitted by saplinglover to Amphibians [link] [comments] |
2023.06.04 18:47 AlexisRosesHands How are your shrubs doing after that deep freeze we had in the winter?
Remember that really deep freeze we had for about a week? If your shrubs lost all their foliage afterwards, how are they doing now? I thought for sure my hollies were dead, but I’m starting to see a little new growth towards the base, so I don’t know if I should give them more time or remove them and start over. How are your plants doing this spring?

2023.06.03 17:17 Proletlariet Spyro
Hold your horns, here comes Spyro!
Spyro the Dragon is, as the name suggests, a young dragon. Over the course of the series, he goes on many adventures. That's basically everything.
This RT only covers the classic timeline, and not The Legend of Spyro or Skylanders.
Dragon Breath
General Strength
Fire Breath
One of Spyro's most notable abilities is breathing fire. Metal enemies are resistant to fire, but can be defeated by charging, while enemies that are too big to be charged can be knocked down with a fire attack (as seen here)
- Sparx states that Spyro's fire is at least 7800 degrees Fahrenheit
- Ashes Toasty's costume, scorching the grass underneath
- Ashes a haystack
- Ashes a large pencil
- Ashes some tents
- Ashes a painting
- Ashes a cuckoo clock
- Ashes a large mushroom
- Ashes thick thorns
- Ashes a gear
- Ashes Rhynocs, killing them
- Burns a tree black
- Burns a cactus black, which then explodes
- Burns a large, magic plant, causing it to revert into a seed
- Melts candle wax instantly
- Melts a block of ice a fairy is trapped in without hurting the fairy
- Melts a large block of ice
- Vaporizes a snowman
- Destroys two sausages and fries a dragon's facial hair
- Scorches Dr. Shemp's rear, sending him fleeing in pain
- Scorches Bianca
- [Burns N. Tropy, N. Brio, and N. Gin]()
- Fires a cannon
- Fires a rocket
- Lights a large candle
- Lights lighthouses
- Keeps "sun seeds" lit, from which a new sun can be grown
- Regrows a tree, somehow
Ice Breath
Originally, Spyro could only breathe frost with a superfreeze powerup, or altering the magic that lets him breathe fire, but in later games he gained the ability to breathe it naturally.
Electric Breath
Originally, Spyro could only use electric breath (also known as "lightning breath") with a powerup, but later gained the ability to breathe it naturally. It's effective on metal enemies and objects
Wind Breath
Spyro has the ability to breathe out powerful gusts of wind.
Water Breath
Spyro has the ability to breath out a spray of water. Unlike his other breath attacks, he cannot injure enemies with this, only push them back
Other
Magic and Equipment
Superflame
With a fairy's kiss, or another special powerup, Spyro temporarily gains the Superflame ability. This allows him to breathe fire which is more powerful than his regular flame breath. It can either be breathed like normal, or be shot like a projectile, depending on the game.
Supercharge
Spyro can supercharge on special supercharge ramps (or with the help of special gates), allowing for a much faster and more powerful charge. Spyro runs so fast in this form he burns with red, then purple fire, and can smash a type of chest which he is incapable of charging through normally
Wing Shield
Spyro has the power to shield himself with his wings and reflect attacks. It can reflect blunt objects but not piercing attacks
Shadow Amulet
The Shadow Amulet is a powerful artifact which can refine and focus Spyro's magic
Weapons
Vehicles
Other
Sparx
Sparx is the dragonfly that follows Spyro, helping and protecting him, usually by collecting gems for him. His color changes depending on his health. He can also point in the direction of nearby gems.
Shooting
Butterflies
Abilities
Strength
Charging
- Charges poles to knock gems off the top
- Charges coconut trees to shake coconuts out of them
- Charges a monster into a gong, knocking it out
- Charges a sheep into the air
- Charges enemies into the air
- Charges through heavily armored enemies, breaking their armor
- Charges through snowmobiles
- Charges through a robot
- Charges large, armored enemies backwards on slippery ice
- Charges large, stone Earthshapers backwards a fair distance
- Charges the large monster Buzz back repeatedly
- Charges the large Ineptune backwards, pushing her through water and shattering the structure she hits
- Charges into charging bulls, sticking their horns into the ground
- Charges into a birdcage, breaking it apart
- Charges rolling metal barrels, knocking them backwards
- Charges bombs across an arena
- Charges a giant bomb into the water
- Charges through large wooden crates
- Charges through metal chests that cannot be broken with fire
- Charges through Metalhead's power poles
- Charges through a stump
- Charges through a large shell
- Charges through a pile of rocks

2023.06.03 16:14 ThrowAway7s2 "Girls sports putting crimp on gym facilities" from the January 20, 1976 Door County Advocate
| Girls sports putting crimp on gym facilities Girls sports putting crimp on gym facilities By JON GAST "I kind of liken it to having a 10-person family and trying to fit them. into a two-bedroom house; you have to do things in shifts," said Sevastopol Athletic Director Eugene Waterstreet, referring to the problem of inadequate gym facilities for the growing number of sports in high school athletic programs. It wasn't too many years ago that the problem was non-existent, but today, with the advent. of Title IX legislation, girls' programs are flourishing and because of this the number of teams in many high schools around the country have doubled. What has this meant to athletic programs? The result is crowded gyms and shortened practices. Possibly for the exception of Gibraltar, Door county high schools have felt the crunch to some degree and with girls' sports still not developed to their maximum, the situation could be worsening. Probably the worst hit of the four schools is Southern Door. Athletic Director John Bowers said the school has had to do some juggling in order to accommodate the schools interscholastic sports program. The Southern Door boys' and girls' varsity and junior varsity basketball teams get the use of the gym after school. One day the boys will practice from 3-4:30 p.m. while the girls go from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and the next day they will flip-flop. This takes up a pretty good chunk of the gym's free time considering the gym is used for numerous school and rec activities at night. So what about all the other interscholastic sports? This is where Bowers turns into somewhat of a magician. The freshman basketball team practices the first three hours of the school day. According to Bowers, because the freshmen boys are too young to drive and must rely on parents for their transportation, it is not rational to have them practice at night or before school. We still haven't covered wrestling or girls' gymnastics. After all the meals are prepared and the mess cleaned up, the wrestlers roll out their mats in the cafeteria for their afternoon workouts. And. the girl gymnasts, contrary to popular opinion, don't get the library, they get the hallways. That's right, they set up their equipment in the hallways in the afternoons. An added problem for Bowers is the fact that there is no transportation for the group of basketball players practicing from 4:30-6 because the last bus leaves the school at 5:15. "I think we have a little more of a problem out here," said Bowers, "because we are out in the country we have that problem with transportation." Two things have helped ease the problem at Sturgeon Bay. First, the junior and senior high schools are separate, thereby relieving the problem caused by freshman sports. The second advantage that the Clippers own is in the layout of the high school. Sturgeon Bay has a balcony adjacent to the gym that allows for an area where wrestling practice can be conducted. It also has the added advantage of not having a girls' gymnastics program and in these times of added stress on facilities one less sport can make a lot of difference. "So far we've been able to work things out," said Athletic Director Ron Casadont. "It's not the best system in the world, but at least everyone has time to work out." As far as use of the gym is concerned, basketball uses up most of that time as it does at most schools; like at Southern Door, the Clippers boys and girls must share their time. One group goes from 2:30-5 while the other must come from 5-6:30. "As more teams come in we'll have more problems," said Casadont. "But most of the coaches realize that we had better go on cooperating." At Sevastopol, the Pioneers are engaged in the two-gym suffle. Wrestling, boys' basketball and girls' basketball are cooperating in sharing the elementary and high school gyms. At present, Athletic Director Eugene Waterstreet is trying to keep things organized with a monthly schedule that directs each sport, when and where it is to practice. "We haven't had any great problems," said Waterstreet. He has the junior high practicing from 2:15 to 3:05 each day with the high school teams taking over after school and at night. Because then are three teams for two gyms, one team often has to come back at night to practice. But as at the other schools, variables are involved, like interscholastic games at night or Rec League or a grade school game, all adding up to one big headache for Waterstreet. One added problem that Waterstreet has is a Wednesday night ordinance that states that there will be no school activities after supper. This means one team is without practice time, but Waterstreet said that he has gotten around this with the cooperation of the girls' basketball team which has agreed not to practice on Wednesday nights. The crowded conditions have forced many of the teams to move their practices to Saturday and there have been some on Sunday also. A good example of a team feeling the crunch is the Sevastopol freshman team. The squad is scheduled with the varsity and junior varsity teams. But the priority that is given to the varsity and junior varsity often leaves the freshmen out in the cold, forcing them to search for spots of time when the gym is available. This means an inconvenience for parents who must cart their boys to school at night or on a Saturday so the team can get in a decent practice. Due to a decision by the Gibraltar school board, dropping athletics in the junior high, the Vikings. enjoy an escape from the "crowd." Add to this the fact that Gibraltar has no wrestling team and you have virtually no problem. The school has no problem in getting in both the boys' and girls' practices after school and still has plenty of time left over for intramurals. "Our dropping the junior high program helped spacewise," said Principal Larry Lundell. "I don't know how it will eventually effect the team, though." How does all this affect the performance of the athlete? "I don't think it has that much effect on the athletes," said Bowers. "The kids go out because they enjoy the sport." As girls' sports grow so will the problems, "but, as Casadont said, the coaches will have to realize that for the sake of the survival of their own sport they will have to compromise on time. But, he said, as far as Sturgeon Bay is concerned, the winter sports may not be the problem area. He feels that when the spring sports roll around the situation nay worsen for awhile as boys' track, girls' track, baseball and eventually girls' softball all must share the gym for a month or so while waiting for the thaw to arrive. The more you think about it, 10 people in a two-bedroom house sounds kind of roomy. https://archive.co.door.wi.us:443/jsp/RcWebImageViewer.jsp?doc_id=1e8fc801-90a4-4104-8e86-19a1ea0947dc/wsbd0000/20170120/00000587 Courtesy of the Door County Library Newspaper Archive Previously posted: Two articles by Jim Robertson, discussing girls' baseball "Quotes his peers on Little League" from the April 9, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13jk75i/quotes_his_peers_on_little_league_from_the_april/ "Problems start with tryouts" from the April 11, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13kiv8q/problems_start_with_tryouts_from_the_april_11/ A series on girls' sports by Linda Adams Part I of the series by Linda Adams was previously posted as "Girls sports have come a long way, not far enough" from the December 27, 1973 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/133xv7s/girls_sports_have_come_a_long_way_not_far_enough/ Part II was previously posted as "Inequities still show in girls sports programs" from the January 3, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/135abbt/inequities_still_show_in_girls_sports_programs/ Part III was previously posted as "Community acceptance still not part of girls' sports" from the January 10, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1369toz/community_acceptance_still_not_part_of_girls/ Part IV was previously posted as "Athletic directors take wide look at girls sports" from the January 17, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/137a5bk/athletic_directors_take_wide_look_at_girls_sports/ Part V was previously posted as "If past growth continues, girls sports will flourish" from the January 24, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1385nqif_past_growth_continues_girls_sports_will/ (a response to the five-part series) "Girls sports pose problem" from the February 12, 1974 Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/1395aem/girls_sports_pose_problem_from_the_february_12/ Other articles and posts "Washington Island's Kay Curtis becoming a legend in her time" on June 14, 1977 in the Door County Advocate https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/131c1w8/washin A grandmotherly perspective on eugenics from the June 2, 1915 Door County News https://www.reddit.com/DoorCountyALT/comments/13b3zya/a_grandmotherly_perspective_on_eugenics_from_the/ "Comments from council" editorial, a rebuke from alleged woman's sports militant Rev. 2023.06.03 06:06 SB_Adventure_Team Just venting about a little league Coach
A little backstory first. I’ve been coaching my son’s teams since tee ball. We have played certified Little Leagues, Rec, All Stars and Travel Ball over the years. There have been years where we have played 3 separate leagues (spring summer and fall). Last year we decided that we were not going to play his final little league season for this year, and we were originally going to put him in camps, clinics and 1:1 instruction since next year he will be going into high school ball. My son is a catcher and pretty damn good at it. He has always played well above the skill level of most of his teammates with the exception of the All Star and travel teams where the player set is more balanced. Well, the available camps and clinics that we were going to send him to are either booked up, or the travel time would get in the in the way of daily life. I was committed to not coaching unless it was just him and I working on his skill set. I had even let the leagues that we play in, and my players that I’ve had stick with me for years that I wouldn’t be returning to coach. Yeah it was a bit teary and I’m glad to hear that many of the kids have stuck together with their new teams, but it has been 10 years of nothing but baseball for us with limited time for our other hobbies. So with the clinics no longer being an option we decided to put him back in a summer league with the intention of baseball coming second, and this year we would focus more time on what we haven’t had much time for in the past years.
Well now we’re here in a summer ball league. There have only been 5 practices in the past two weeks, the head coach has only been at one, and his assistant coach is clearly in over his head as he has never coached a team before. Can’t really fault this assistant as you can tell he is trying. The head coach is quick to call the shots through game changer but is always “busy” and can’t make it to a practice. I wasn’t at the first two practices. My son was though, and he said they were kind of bad. (Remember how I said baseball was coming second) the 4th practice was a lane rental facility. Practice was supposed to start at 6 that day. We showed up at 5 to get some BP in plus I wanted to get some swings in my self. And while his team showed up, the head coach didn’t and the assistant was 30 minutes late. I know the GM to the facility and called him (he was off that day) and explained the situation. His staff said one lane was reserved for 90 minutes. The GM let us keep the lane and said if we needed it longer it was fine by him. So here I am with a team and no coaches. Fine whatever, these kids are here to play and learn. I’m not going to keep them for it. I’ll hold the practice. Assistant coach finally shows up.LF while my son was gearing up so we could work with the pitchers and rotate out for BP. This is when I found out the head coach had only been to one practice. This started to piss me off. 5th practice was scheduled for yesterday. We had some pretty gnarly weather rolling in and there was no communication about practice being canceled. Well I made the call for us not to go. And like clockwork the skies opened up right at the time practice would have started. Practice was rescheduled for today. Head Coach sent out a message letting everyone know. Also yapping about other stuff that team needs to do. Well guess who isn’t at practice. Head Coach. The assistant is. He asks if I can work with pitchers again. Ok I’m here. He wants to work on fielding drills. Again, I can’t fault this guy for trying. But this practice I really got see is understanding of how to operate a team and his understanding of the game. It was pretty cringe. I had to step in and take over as he is loosing control of the team half way through practice. Not really knowing these kids other than my own and the few I worked with on pitching I was able to quickly put some drills together for the last half. I could tell the last half where we were running an infield field drill that my son was getting frustrated because he knew where the play was supposed to go and these kids were just not paying attention. On the way home all we can do is laugh about this situation we’re in. We’re both pretty frustrated. There is another practice on Sunday. Why a Sunday? I have no idea. First game is Monday though, and half the team has no idea what they’re doing, and not to mention there is no way that this team is ready for a game. From what I’ve seen there are three solid pitchers, a catcher with a possible back up, and maybe a couple good infielders. Even if this was my team and with my experience I wouldn’t be able to set a line up or have any idea of positions for these kids. None of this are the kids at fault for. If this head coach was going to volunteer for a team you would think they would show up. It is kind of a big responsibility to lead a team. These parents have signed their kids to learn and play. While this is a summer ball league to fill the void between spring and fall, and for kids who aren’t on one of the two all star teams to continue playing through the break, this is actually a fairly competitive league. It isn’t a rec league that you can just fuck off with to be able to tell people yeah a coach a team. Many of the coaches that are in this league are coaches in the two main little leagues here also. We do this for the love of the game and we love teaching these kids. This isn’t the case with this team. I’ve never even heard of this coach prior to this season.
I’m stuck on a deciding what to do here. I’ll gladly step up and take over this team but unfortunately I even can’t be there for 100% of games due to work situations. That’s an easy phone call to the league organizer. Also there is that part of me that wants to stick to the baseball comes second mentality that we went into this season with and just let this team fall apart. But then I am conflicted with these kids deserve better than this and I am more than capable to provide them with a great program. Whether they turn into a winning team or not they will finish the season with better skills than when they started.
Maybe this is partly because I’ve been coaching for so long ,have run solid programs, and have dedicated a good portion of our lives to this game that I have forgotten that in the end this is all volunteer, and this is just how it is with some teams. Part of me wants to jump right back in. The other part says not my problem. Those of you who have coached in the past or are currently coaching probably understand this predicament the best. You guys know how much time and effort goes into this game. I’ll gladly be around to help this team when able, but with a head coach that doesn’t show up it makes me feel like why even bother. Why bother putting my own kid through a season of struggle.
Sorry for the long winded rant.

2023.06.03 02:56 Fitzwoppit I need Holly and Ivy removal advice, anyone able to help?
We are in the US, western WA state. Our front lawn is a slope down to a road. It has one very large cedar tree, a holly tree about 7ft tall and growing, 4 smaller holly trees that have popped up each about 1ft high right now, a blackberry bramble, and the entire ground around this is covered in completely out of control ivy. All of this was already established when we moved in, except the smaller holly trees that popped up this spring.
The slope is enough we have to have something that will help hold soil in place. We were planning to pull all the ivy we can and seed with clover and native wildflower seeds. We're thinking if the Holly is going to continue spreading we should take it out as well, it doesn't seem to attract any insects or critters to it's berries and is very close to the neighbor's fence.
We don't know how long it would take for the clover and flowers to fill in and don't want the soil to slide onto the road and/or destabilize the cedar tree. Does anyone have an experience or insight into a good way for us to handle this transition?
We are thinking that at some point putting in a retaining wall and leveling that area might be best, but don't have the funds to do that right now and need to improve things until that can happen. Are there any downsides you know of to removing the holly or any better ideas for stabilizing this area without using such invasive plants?

My wife and I have been doing a variation of keto/low carb for 3 years now. We always do great in the winter months (in MN) because we spend a lot more time at home. Then comes spring/summer. Both of the kids are in travel Baseball/Softball and we are never home. It is still fairly easy when we are at work during the day because we have access to microwaves to heat up tasty leftovers. Where we fail, is dinner since we are always traveling or sitting in lawn chairs/bleachers until 9-10 pm (including all day on the weekends). We have done the obvious things such as meat/cheese style plates, charcuterie type snacks, boiled eggs and lettuce wrap sandwiches. All are fine, but after doing these options for days or months in a row, they get tiresome.
We literally do not have 1 day between mid-May and end of July where we are not traveling for the kids' sports. For people in similar situations, how do you add more variety? Is there other on the go snacks and meals that can be eaten cold right out of a cooler?

2023.06.02 06:28 gia1724 Planning solo trip for next spring
Hi everyone! I’m planning my first trip to S. Korea next spring (end of March-going into April) to celebrate my birthday and coincide with the opening of the KBO season. I’m traveling solo and was planning to spend all of my time in and around Seoul. My dates are flexible-ish so I’m thinking 10 solid days in the country, not counting my travel days to and from home (I’m from the US).
So a couple of questions:
First: Is 10 days too many to spend in Seoul? I have a handful of things I’d like to plan while I’m there (cooking classes, temple tours, as many baseball games as possible, etc.) so I will have plenty to do but I don’t want to be rushing from one thing to another.
Second: I’m in my early 40’s (female) and thus not into club culture or anything like that. I know it will likely be unavoidable but i don’t really want to be wading through 20-year-old tourists everywhere I go. Are there any specific things people my age might be more inclined to do (in the evenings or otherwise)?
I’m still very much in the planning stages so I’m flexible on a lot. This is my birthday gift to myself since I missed my 39th and 40th birthdays with no kind of celebration thanks to covid. Next year I want to go all out 😂 and cross a bucket list trip off while exploring a new culture.
If anyone has any suggestions they’d like to add, I’m all ears. Thank you!
