2023.04.10 18:14 TimingGod Email to a friend - Day trip to Vietnam circa 2007
Dear sir or madam: Please read the attached Nigerian scam. Failing that attached you will find information on how to bail your son out of jail. Here is a number in Bermuda to call...
[ramble] Okay, one of the first things you have to understand about this trip is that from point A to the theoretical point B it could be done in roughly 8 hours at a leisurely 45 miles per hour.
However, much more than half of this trip is unpaved and much of that very unpaved. Also we weren't going A to B, we were taking every little side road that looked at all promising going just far enough that we made sure that we could still get back to "the road."
We had a map. A tiny bit bigger than a place mat. Almost entirely in Thai, which would have been fine except that Mai's sense of direction is about as good as my ability to read Thai. Navigating has been a real team effort and we were doing everything in our power (exploring) to get ourselves lost. Also Westerners do not come this way. Whenever we got to a place where the road was real enough to have signs they were, of course, in Thai.
I had thought to bring 3 liters of water (swearing under my breath that the two over the shoulder bottle holders designed to perfectly hold a liter bottle of water that I had purchased on the cruise ship was currently in my luggage enjoying a sunny beach side relaxation at LAX.) not realizing that this would not be a popular item in stores as the Thai can drink their native water.
And of course it did not occur to me that once you leave the expat areas you leave the Western toilets behind (NPI.) The first thing I had done to Mai's house was install a Western toilet (even before A/C!) While I really like the bum gun aspect I can not get use to the squat toilet. Mentally I know it is more hygienic and is more natural in terms of how your body should work. And it isn't the obstacle it once was (thankfully as even I can't hold it for a week [smile]) so I guess someday I'll be comfortable with the process.
Vendor carts, which come to the village with different items (mostly food related) sporadically throughout the day, seem to go no further East than that. I never saw one again until Nakhon Phanon. Food becomes more and more unrecognizable and as we are following the river for the most part more seafood based than I would like.
On the plus side movement makes a nice breeze, the trees provide plenty of sun-blockage much of the trip and the mosquitoes still hate me (poor Mai.)
That first day we found a couple of tiny temples at the river's edge and Mai got to talk to many people we encountered in small towns. I got to practice the one wai I am comfortable with - the one for people clearly older (and therefore more revered) than yourself. At this point it is already clear the much worked upon bike's suspension will not be functioning optimally for much more than another day.
300 miles of driving later (about 70 miles for the village A to B-wise) we stop in the just slightly larger than our town of Sakon Nakhon. I will be gracious and call this a BnB. I think basically Mai negotiated us a room in a person's house. No air, no fan, one window with no screen, and no breeze. Mattress on the floor maybe two inches thick if that (all standard native Thai.) Thankfully it is now firmly the dry season, but still I was miserable and got very little sleep.
Nakhon Phanon I already told you about. But we ran into one couple at a outdoor diner that spoke English and came over when they heard us doing the same - like two life boats colliding we clung to each other. We learned the very important piece of information that there are basically two passable roads into Vietnam in this area (we are still in Thailand with Laos in the way but it is not very wide at this point.) and neither are authorized to issue visas. The joys of Communist countries. So the thing to do is drive 60 miles south and cross the mighty Mekong River (kind of like your Mississippi) via the apparently famous Friendship Bridge and into Savannakhet, Laos. There we could (and did) stay for a day while they processed a 15 day visa from Laos to Vietnam.
On the way we saw a brightly colored huge moth about twice the size of my hand out stretched. We had stopped to drink and look at the river and this thing was dive bombing Mai. It was huge. I thought it was a large butterfly at first.
After crossing the border at the Embassy they charged us $50 (600,000 kip (money with numbers so large and colors so vibrant it feels like play money)) to expedite and process visa application. I suspect that was a rip off but I don't want to haggle with a government official. My 'libertarian' disdain crosses language barriers. [laugh]
Oh language-history lesson. A large portion of Northeastern Thailand is called Issan (or often Isan.) It used to be part of Laos a long time ago (think Texas.) There are only two dialects in all of Thailand: standard and Issan. The latter is Thai influenced by the remnants of Laotian. So now we are in Laos and the fact that Mai can sort of pick out some words but not always correctly is clearly playing with her head. Luckily here near the border some people speak Thai. This is good as the only other language is French. All the signs are in Laos and French. Laos was a French colony for a long time.
Savannakhet (Savan in case I have to type it again) is the second biggest city in Laos. I've been to the other one but I never had transportation so was limited to walking distance. Here we visited all the little shops on barges moored along the river. To buy something we had to throw something away as our (she laughed at me when I added it) trunk was full. So we bought little. But handled much. I was able to buy 4 more liters of water. I'd been buying these tiny bottles which is all I could find whenever we could find them.
([i]during proof[/i]) I forgot the Dinosaur Museum. [url]
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g811038-d2158111-Reviews-The_Savannakhet_Dinosaur_Museum-Savannakhet_Savannakhet_Province.html[/url] Impressive on the outside. Two dreary rooms on the inside. And of course no English on the plaques. But our 'guide' spoke some English. I always loved dinosaurs so even this was cool. Mai seemed bored, be we also went to a couple more temples so we are more than even [smile]
I thought Thailand was cheap, non-tourist Laos was less than half that. Tough to do the math in my head (I remember being in Vientiane where the signs also had English on them and seeing 'Massage $5' same as Thailand but it had always been in baht. Seeing it in English somehow made it unpassupable.) I had to go Kip to Baht to CAN. Here an hour massage worked out to $2 and a bit of change. We stopped for two hours each. One for my sore ass alone. Add in a 100% tip for a job well done and it was still less than $20 for both of us. Pleasant sound of the river and a wonderful breeze the whole time.
French pastry. Mai doesn't like sweets but she liked the blueberry muffins, grilled.
I choose the hotel right next to Embassy on the theory that A) I wouldn't be able to get lost in the morning and B) it would probably be a nice one. With the upgrade for a room with a ceiling fan it was $18. I checked out the room skeptically. Clean, a lot more space than I was expecting, a wonderful view of the concrete wall of the Embassy and a little mini-fridge with bottled water in it. I was hoping that the French influence would extend to a box-spring but alas the mattress was still on a solid base. At least it was a thicker mattress. Maybe it was because I had no sleep the night before but I slept like the dead - naked, no sheet and the fan blowing down on me.
Breakfast: Eggs in a basket for me, muffin for her. One more hour of massage for us and off we went. And the ground went uphill with almost no shade. The engine made funny sounds pulling me, it's additions and our possessions up the steep incline and suddenly we were engulfed in a thick black cloud. We'd blown a gasket. Luckily as this is often a weak point in used motor parts I had brought spares and a couple hours later in the grueling sun the engine purred again. It now had far less oil in it than I would have liked and I had stupidly overlooked bring some with us. But we pressed on. There were no towns, no side roads, no trees. Just rock and grass as far the eye could see.
Just when I started to think that petrol could become an issue in a while as well, we finally hit a town - Xepon. Not much to recommend it but we were able to get oil, fuel and some dumplings.
Oh, when we entered Laos we now had to drive on the other side of the road which Mai was having a awful time remembering (just as I would) and we had to swerve several times to avoid oncoming traffic. When we left our pit stop we had a very close call as we drove straight off into the wrong lane. Luckily much of the way was single lane and there was never very much traffic regardless.
Less than an hour later we hit a river. Just before the bridge was a big sign. Something in Laos, something in French, and then something else in another language that clearly ended in Vietnam. No border building. We crept across the bridge wondering which side of the road we were supposed to be on now. We rounded a corner with waist high concrete barriers on both sides and were waved into a parking spot. We walked over to a little booth and a bored looking guy stamped and squiggled my Laos entry stamp and unstapled the visa from just hours before all without looking at me. He took slightly longer with Mai, but not much. He asked a question neither of us understood. He tried again in French. Swung back for another swing at what I assume was Laos. No idea, but he gave up and waved us on.
We drove all of 100 feet past an up/down gate and were waved into another parking space. Again we walked to another window our visa papers in hand. Behind us they started emptying our trunk. They charged me another $10 to stamp the passport. This I am sure was pure graft as I have never had any country charge money at the passport station. But Communist countries make me nervous and graft is not one of those things that gets my hackles up. The wait while they checked our possessions at the subatomic level was much more annoying.
We were going to spend the day in Lao Bao (which was right there at the border) but we discovered that the days of cheap prices were over (these were nearly Canadian prices) and that the coast was only an hour away. And we both agreed that Đông Hà would be just as nice to explore. On the bright side bad English was spoken here by many.
We pulled into Đông Hà around 1pm and was very helpfully directed to something akin to a Chamber of Commerce. There we got a flyer (in English!) for something called 'The Some Days of Silence Resort and Spa.' It had a little map that made it look like we could walk there from here without major exertion.
The Vietnamese dollar is called a Dong. And yes, we were (are) just immature enough to snicker over that (once I explained the slang) on several occasions. I decided to keep my kip for the trip back and changed some baht into dongs at a real bank. I'm so used to dealing with ATMs (although they aren't really automated as there is a person involved behind the glass behind the machine.)
I found an internet cafe with a confusing keyboard. Not an overlay, an extra row of keys. Easier to use than the overlay because you just had to get use to ignoring the extra row and the occasional odd placement of specialty keys. Anyway, looked up the resort and decided we should give it a check. Only bad feature is that there is a casino nearby (I have a gambling addiction with craps.) but the compulsion is much weaker when foreign rules are in play, I don't speak the language and can't think in the currency. Also I'll give my wallet to Mai.
A short drive later we are travelling along the ocean and into the resort. The lobby looked wonderful. Let's say as good as a mid-level hotel, half as good as a W Resort. I had found the room on mapquest for $112 but the receptionist - who spoke extremely good English - quoted $189. After several rounds of attempted haggling she indicated she had no objections to me crossing the lobbying and booking the room on the computer (the same one I am using now.) which is what I did. [url]
http://bookings.mapquest.com/hotels/hotel/?hotel_id=700466776&check_in=5%2F19%2F2014&check_out=5%2F21%2F2014&rooms=1&adults=2&refid=5101[/url] Took around 20 minutes for the electronic paperwork to bounce back and forth across the globe and become actual paperwork and we had two days booked. We drove our bike around to our window and threw everything through the window into the room (no couth on us.) Then properly stowed the bike (additional charge - the resort's official mantra.)
Meanwhile back in Thailand martial law was declared yesterday I discovered. I tend to ignore these fluctuations in the political situation as they happen sort of regularly every 4 to 6 years. And while I'm getting different reports from different sources it looks like the monarchy trying to stop this ridiculously never ending stalemate. Hopefully things will end with a stronger democracy (a boy can dream.) I'm sure it will be at least as corrupt but hopefully stronger and still a democracy.
Once the sun was just about touching the water we ventured out into the South China Sea for a languidly swim while it set.
Then we set out to a small town close nearby for what I would call sort of Asian-Mexican fusion. Weird across the taste buds but a very pleasant after taste. After which we suddenly became very tired simultaneously and went back to our surprisingly comfortable bed and straight to dreaming.
And so this morning after a very strenuous workout milady has returned to sleep and I am turbo charged down here in the lobby typing what drivel I can dredge from my memory while sipping on a Cafe Cubano. I do not care for the taste but it is like espresso concentrate. I can feel my eyes pulse.
I think we might stay one extra day and then try to get home in one straight drive - bike and ass willing. Glad I didn't turn back back when I wrote you that a smarter man would turn back. It was right after that that things got 'fun.' A completely different trip than I had envisioned.
When I opened the email and saw I had four messages from you it suddenly occurred to me that when and if you respond to that backlog then suddenly it will be all on me. Hadn't really hit me that I would 'have' to reply. We are really stuck in a trap now aren't we? [smile]
Replies to your other posts await my triumphant (or otherwise) return to Udon Thani.

2023.03.20 04:53 mmayor114 Full list of differences between the original cut of "Live Together, Die Alone" only available on the Region 1 DVD and the 2-episode cut featured everywhere else
For all of the Lost season finales, there exists an original cut where the finale plays as one long double-length episode and then there is a version that was edited likely primarily for the purpose of reruns where it is split into two normal length episodes. The 2-episode version typically ends up with some material cut for time. I previously made a
post detailing the differences between the two versions of "The Incident". I finally got my hands on a copy of the Region 1 DVD of Season 2 so I have done the same for "Live Together, Die Alone". Every other source for this episode, including the blu-ray, contains the 2-episode version. Below are the changes made in the 2-episode version.
Part 1
0:00 - Episode starts with shorter Previously on Lost segment.
3:30 - Brief scene cut:
[We see Kate with a group of redshirts around her, asking her questions.]
KATE: Okay, okay, just wait one second, okay. I'll be right back. [She approaches Jack] Everybody needs to know what's going on, Jack. There's a boat...
JACK: Just tell them Desmond's back until I find out the rest, okay.
9:55 - Extra few seconds missing at beginning of scene of Locke walking into the Hatch
17:49 - 12 second shot of Michael and co. hiking over a hill missing. The musical cue for the Mapquest theme starts at the end of the preceding Sun and Jin scene. In the original it starts at the beginning of the missing shot.
41:38 - Missing act break between Jack and Co. confronting Michael scene and Sayid praying on the Elizabeth
42:26 - Missing overhead shot of the Elizabeth following Sayid saying “We’re here.” Replaced by end-of-episode LOST title.
Part 2
0:00 - New Previously on Lost segment.
1:12 - Musical cue slightly altered to account for the point where the episode was split in half.
2:42 - Missing couplet of dialogue from beginning of flashback where Desmond and Kelvin trigger the blast doors. In the original cut the flashback opens with a shot of Desmond wheeling the metal cart under the blast door, which flows directly from Desmond glancing at the same cart in the present.
[Flashback - We see Desmond moving a cart under a blast door. Inman pours some detergent into a measuring cup and stirs it with a paint brush.]
INMAN: Ready?
DESMOND: Maybe you should do it?
INMAN: Come on, Des, you've seen me do it a hundred times.
7:01 - LOST Title inserted into act break between Eko setting off the dynamite and failsafe key flashback.
9:13 - In the original cut when Desmond says “Why make us do it – push the button? If we...if we can just-”, Kelvin interrupts him by laughing and then closing the small door to the failsafe and then saying “Here’s the real question, Desmondo. Do you have the courage to take your finger out of the dam and blow the whole thing up instead?”. In the 2-episode version, Kelvin laughing is cut and Desmond is interrupted by Kelvin’s response. As a result, the musical cue begins earlier in the dialogue in the edited version, when Kelvin says “Discharge it.” rather than when Desmond says “Why make us do it”.
9:29 - Some lines of dialogue cut (missing dialogue in bold):
[Present - Back in the Hatch.]
DESMOND: I think your friends just blew themselves up, brother.
LOCKE: They're not my friends.
DESMOND: I can't hear anything. Maybe we should open it.
LOCKE: No, no; it's a trick.
DESMOND: A trick? They could be hurt! Is your doctor around?
LOCKE: Our doctor is God knows where. I…and he sure as hell doesn't care about anything happening down here.
DESMOND: Can I ask you a question, brother?
Note: The subtitles on Hulu still had the missing dialogue in this scene.
15:17 - Couple of lines of dialogue cut (missing dialogue in bold):
DESMOND: Tell me about this other hatch you found—this Pearl.
LOCKE: What do you want to know?
DESMOND: Details.
LOCKE: The Pearl is a psychological station full of TV monitors.
This scene also has new footage not used in the original cut since the timing of the shot/reverse shot has changed. I.e. The camera is pointed at Locke during the line “full of TV monitors” whereas in the original it is pointed at Desmond.
17:19 - Missing 25 seconds of Kelvin making his way out of the Hatch while being followed and watched by Desmond. In the 2-episode cut, it cuts directly from Desmond eyeing Kelvin suspiciously to Kelvin stepping out into the jungle. As a result, the musical score is also truncated and the timing is different all the way until Kelvin confronts Desmond.
29:23 - Added act break at the end of Desmond’s suicide flashback. In the original it whooshes right back to the present.
36:47 - Missing 7 seconds in the middle of Michael and Walt’s hug where it cuts to a wide shot of the dock and reaction shots of Hurley and Jack. No changes were made to the timing of the musical cue (Desmond’s theme) to account for this so you can actually hear the melody skip suddenly when the cut happens.

2023.03.11 22:22 travispbonfigli Cisco CCNA (200-901 DEVASC): Cisco Networking Academy DevNet Associate Course Lab & Packet Tracer Video Tutorial Series
Hello and Good Evening All!
I just wrapped up the teaching of my Spring 2023 Cisco Networking Academy CCNA DevNet Associate (DEVASC 200-901) course at Anne Arundel Community College here in Annapolis, Maryland! One important piece of the course is providing the learners with additional supports beyond those found in the course to add value to their studies and to make the course more enjoyable. To that end, I have created video tutorials that cover every lab and Packet Tracer activity in addition to supplemental video tutorials where the material gets a bit more challenging. I wanted to share all of the Packet Tracelab/supplemental video tutorials I have created for my learners in the hopes of adding some value to your Cisco network programmability learning journey. Below you will find links to everything I provided to my learners this semester there is over 25 hours worth of video tutorials (and lots of very useful links to external resources) and I have organized all material by course module, the title of the resource or activity, and (when a video) the length of the video and whether it was a Packet Tracer activity or lab activity.
These are all being provided for FREE. I even included some additional resources that I passed along to my learners from other sources such as the Hank Preston series on network programmability.
Okay, hopefully, these will add some value to your studies/certification preparation as a NetDevOps engineer for the DEVASC certification exam or in your general studies as a learner. CCNA studies as well, and have a great week!*Disclaimer: I cannot provide you with the Packet Tracer activities or the DEVASC and CSR1kv VMs, but you can download Packet Tracer for
FREE (link below) and work up the scenarios or come up with your own.

2023.03.11 22:21 travispbonfigli Cisco CCNA (200-901 DEVASC): Cisco Networking Academy DevNet Associate Course Lab & Packet Tracer Video Tutorial Series

2023.02.09 15:50 Nina_Innsted Maura Murray went missing on this day in 2004
Maura Murray, a nursing student at
University of Massachusetts Amherst went missing on this day in 2004.
On the evening of February 5, 2004, while she was on duty at her campus-security job, Murray spoke on the phone with her older sister, Kathleen. They discussed Kathleen's relationship problems with her fiancé. Around 10:30 p.m., while still on her shift, Murray reportedly broke down in tears. We later learned that Kathleen had struggled with her sobriety and shared that with Maura, which is what led to her upset that night.
On Saturday February 7, Maura went car shopping with her father, Fred. She attended a party at school that night and after the party was involved in a minor car accident, she struck a guardrail. However the accident caused $10k worth of damage to the car. She had an interaction with police, but no field sobriety test was given. The damages were covered by insurance
That night her dad left and Maura returned to school. On Monday she used her computer to MapQuest directions to the Berkshires and Burlington VT.
Maura left the college campus between 4 and 5p headed north, presumably on 91.
Sometime after 7:00 pm, a Woodsville, New Hampshire resident heard a loud thump outside her house. Through her window, she could see a car up against the snowbank along Route 112, also known as Wild Ammonoosuc Road. The car pointed west on the eastbound side of the road. At 7:27 pm, the local woman reported the car accident on the sharp corner of Route 112 adjacent to her home. She telephoned the Grafton County Sheriff's Department at 7:27 pm to report the accident.[24] According to the 9-1-1 log, the woman claimed to have seen a man smoking a cigarette inside the car.[26] However, she later stated that she had not seen a man nor a person smoking a cigarette, but rather had seen what appeared to be a red light glowing from inside the car, potentially from a cell phone.[27] A passing motorist, a school bus driver who lived nearby, stopped at the scene. They saw the car, as well as a young woman walking around the vehicle. the driver is assumed to be Maura.
Police arrived on scene at 7:46p but there was no sign of Maura. Just the now abandoned Saturn vehicle. She has never been seen or heard from again.
There have been multiple theories as to what became of her. She's been the subject of podcasts; many a Reddit write up and tons of conjecture. Today I think about her family and their nearly 20 year wait for answers.

2023.01.15 02:30 DMVRealtor1989 Beware of Local Scam Artist!
Nova Residents, I need your help to expose a local scam artist that has been operating in the DMV for over a decade. Homeowners need to avoid this person at all costs. Here is my experience and what I uncovered after the fact.
I am a local realtor and I had an upcoming listing that I was preparing for the market. After striking out with several landscaping companies, I was in a pinch and called a landscaper that I found on Craigslist to do some last minute work:
https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/fgs/d/washington-fall-yard-clean/7577983203.html Leaf removal, bush trimming, mulch. Pretty basic stuff. Kamran Khan, the owner of Sophia Landscaping & Tree Services LLC, met me at the property. He quoted me $1200 for the work described above. Seemed like a high price but I was in a pinch so I agreed. He asked for $600 deposit with the remaining balance due when the work was completed. When I stopped by the house I noticed a massive load of mulch on the driveway without a tarp. I asked him if the driveway would be cleaned off. He assured me it would.
The work started and Kamran was very communicative sending me updates/photos as the work progressed. The night before the work was set to be completed I get a text requesting the remaining $600 because he needed to pay his guys. This was not the agreement but I agreed to pay early nonetheless. The next day I came to inspect the work. The work itself was substandard but it was substantially better than before. The problem is that he left massive mulch stain in the driveway. He also left 30+ bags of leaves on the street.
No problem. I’m sure this is an honest mistake and it’ll get addressed. Kamran assured me he would take care of the issues. 3 days passed and Kamran went dark on me. At this point, something felt off so I started googling this guy and found two (now defunct) landscaping companies.
- Sapphire Landscaping: https://www.yelp.com/biz/sapphire-landscaping-fairfax
- Mulberry Landscaping (https://www.yelp.com/biz/mulberry-landscaping-vienna?adjust_creative=mapquest&utm_campaign=yelp_feed&utm_medium=feed_v2&utm_source=mapquest)
First review I read: “Be forewarned, this guy is a scam artist!! He changes his company name and phone number, is not licensed or insured and you will not get your money back.” Great. I kept digging and I found this article:
https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/wusa-9-call-for-action-consumer-alert-on-local-landscape65-272011100 It was the same story over and over again. He either does horrible work and refuses to refund or he tries to split with people’s deposit and doesn’t even attempt to start the work. After I realized that I was dealing with “an unrepentant crook” as one reviewer called him, I decided to confront him. I texted him “Kamran the leaves are still here and the driveway has not been washed….I see this isn’t the first time for you” and I included a link to the above WUSA-9 article. All hell broke loose.
He called me immediately and was IRATE! Asked me why the fuck I was texting him this shit. Called me a c**ksucker several times. Ok, now I am dealing with a lunatic. I decided to cut my losses. Rented a truck to remove the leaves and a power washer to clean the driveway. Listing went on the market. All is good. Wrong.
The next day I received a really strange call from another landscaping company (Shout out G&C Tree Service!!). They got a call from someone who claimed to be the listing agent for a property (my listing) and wanted two large oak trees removed. This person also specified that he wanted the felled trees to remain on the property. Kamran was calling landscaping companies in the hopes of finding one that would accept the job and take payment upon completion. He obviously intended to scam them as well. The kind owner of G&C Tree Service went through the trouble of finding my number from the listing and called to warn me. I immediately contacted the police. I texted Kamran that I knew what he was doing and that I contacted the authorities. I got another frantic and violent call from him denying all of it.
If you look at the reviews, you’ll notice that they stop around 2016. Got me wondering why. And then I found this:
https://patch.com/virginia/fairfaxcity/report-driver-slumped-over-wheel-leads-dui-charge-police This was Kam’s third DWI offense according to the Fairfax County General District Court Online Case Information System. Kam undoubtedly had his license suspended for several years and thus unable to continue his landscaping business. He must have just reinstated his license because his new company LLC was opened in June 2022. Now he is right back to scamming people.
https://www.bizapedia.com/va/sophia-landscaping-and-tree-services-llc.html If you have had any personal experiences with this person, please share. If this gets enough traction perhaps WUSA-9 will run another story to warn our community. This guy is a menace and he needs to be held accountable.
TLDR; Hired a landscaper who turned out to be a scam artist and NOVA Residents need to be wary of this sociopath.

2022.11.24 16:46 Jim__Anchower Copy Machine Repairman Job Really Blows Chunks
| Hola Amigos, Been a long time since I rapped atchya. So like, the job market is pretty slim pickins in my medium sized town, especially if you've quit or been fired from most of the ones I'm qualified to do. Which is not all that many if you only have a high school degree. Or a G.E.D. like me cuz I totally dropped out of that brainwashing scam system 1/2 through my senior year. But you know, in hindsight, I prolly shoulda just stayed on from Jan~May, and completed it rather than lay around for 18 months, then buckle down and study for the G.E.D. for another 3 months. I coulda gotten the same thing if I just hung on a little bit longer my senior year instead of making a righteous stand but basically punching myself in the ball-bag in the process. Weed will totally mess with the logic part of your brain, what's it called, the melonomus or something. If I graduated with my class, I was going to be totally naked under my cap and gown and moon everyone when I got my diploma, but I missed out on getting arrested for indecent exposure and probably a mark on my criminal record. That would have made it even harder to get a job. Also the local cops were there to keep order and they would have batoned my ass if I did anything, they're always looking for an excuse. I would have totally been the talk of the town though, flashing my junk at everyone and spinin' it around like I'm twirlin' a lasso, then doing the Wild Stallions air guitar riff and walking off the stage like a boss. I guess they accidentally called my name at the ceremony sorta like in that movie, "Beuller? Beuller?" and when I wasn't there to get my diploma, one of my buds yelled out, "He flunked out!" and everyone started laughing like, Oh right, of course that dumb stoner didn't graduate, what were we thinking? Yeah, that wasn't cool, glad I wasn't there. I probably woulda laughed too, then I'd look dumb like I deserved to flunk out. So like, whaddya do if all the high school kids are snapping up all the primo burger flipping jobs and any others available have my face hanging on the wall of the managers room like I'm on the FBI most wanted list at the Post Office? You gotta do 2 things I really didn't want to do: 1) take off my baseball cap to hide the fact that I haven't washed my hair all week, and get a hair cut and all that. 2) gotta apply to the shithole places you never considered before but are now looking pretty sweet since they look just as desperate as I am, it's a perfect match. It's like picking up someone at bar time. Both struck out all night, so why not give it a try. Got my mullet cut completely off which totally sucks cuz it took me a long time to grow that thing out, in defiance of society. Washed and styled, axe body spray and all that, printed resume with year graduated high school 2001~2003. Yeah, I was technically a senior for a couple of years, but the G.E.D. says 2003. Walked in to the hole-in-the-wall copier sales and service centre (British, so it sounds upper class) and handed them my resume and application, and got hired that day. I shoulda known that was a red flag but at first I thought they were so impressed with me they couldn't let me head out the door without an offer. Big mistake. Anyone who'd hire me, I'm immediately suspicious of. I got "trained" with some videos on VHS tapes with video tracking problems, then the "senior repairman" who is also my head manager, CEO, and owner all wrapped into one, poked around a few models with a screwdriver and flashlight and I had to rip it apart, clean everything put it back together on 5 different models. Then the next day I was given a service list and a few maps copied from old area phone books with notes on them to go service copy machines. Remember, this was a while back amigos, we still had to use MapQuest to find our way around, or very limited phone book maps, then stop at gas stations and ask for directions and all that stuff. Like, where is the company van with the logo on it I can drive around with? Nope, I gotta use my own beater car, had the whole back stuffed with replacement copier everything so that I couldn't even see out the hatchback. 25 cents a mile compensation? Man, my car BURNS more than 25 cents worth of oil per mile as seen by the white smoke out the back like I'm playing the '80s video game Spy Hunter. You hit the oil or smoke button and the cars chasing you skid off the road and crash, but I'm not voluntarily doing that stuff, my car is just really old. I had to put a magnetic company sign on the roof so I wouldn't get towed away in corporate parking lots, but seriously, that doesn't help your company with your sign on my dented roof and no hub caps on any of my wheels, car backfires periodically etc. https://preview.redd.it/3wco9r67w72a1.jpg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd8aa320efeee2686a82acbb0f05af1acb7a286d So here I am driving around places I have never been to, got a map in my right hand, and my left is trying to manually move the windshield wipers cuz the motor is almost shot, and I'm driving with both knees on the steering wheel. Then I fix my tie, and walk into these place like a bank, convenience store, or other business with my briefcase full of cleaning tools, and what happens? All these people, every damn one of them I swear man, looks at me and says, "Your copy machine broke again!" Uh....you mean YOU broke YOUR copy machine you bought from us like 7 years ago and the counter reads over a million copies? That's our fault? Dudes, like EVERY-DAMN-SERVICE-CALL-WAS-LIKE-THIS! Every job was long, hard and nasty (that's what she said). Can I go back in time, and instead of storming out of the burger joint parking lot, could I crawl back in, apologize for flipping off the shift manager and just have my job back that I know how to do and no one sees or really hassles me all that much? https://preview.redd.it/q1b1lgt5y72a1.jpg?width=313&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e7f8eb3c2b4834ddce886f7aba3ff38ee925219 Here's some of the shit I found wrong at these service calls after they screamed at me and gave me the stink-eye after walking in: - A lot of these copy machines, WORK JUST FINE. They didn't purchase a more expensive copier that can do premium service like double-sided copying, stapling, collating. You buy a cheap model, it may not do that thing.
- It's burning through a whole hopper of toner! Yeah dude, if you are making copies that use a LOT of ink on them like maps, photos etc, it uses more ink and you get less over all copies. You use more of something, it runs out quicker.
- Error code, paper jam: paper is jammed behind paper tray because they over-filled it and it got shoved out of the tray when forced back in. Pull out tray, remove sheet of paper blocking sensors, put tray back in, works fine. I drove 70 miles round trip for that?
- Error: Copier has NO display lights, doesn't not function AT ALL!!! Totally dead! Yeah, I get there and guess why? It was unplugged. They unplugged it so they could plug in the coffee maker and no one switched it back.
- Error: paper feed tray doesn't feed paper. Right, because the thing has 20 staples jammed all over it, and the users didn't remove them before placing them in the hopper.
- Toner inop. No, not inop, they tried to add toner themselves, it squirted ALL over the place and that stuff is damn near the driest version of paint you'll ever see. It smears, it stains, it doesn't come off easily even with alcohol. They over-filled it and it exploded inside the machine everywhere. That was a long day. Guess who's boss let him ruin several dress shirts with toner stains before he issued him a bib you'd wear in art class?
- A gas station had our cheapest, smallest model that was basically for a home computer, and it was the dirtiest one I ever worked on. Dust caked on every roller, greasy buttons probably from the hotdogs they serve, glass had dry shit spilled all over it. Don't put it by the door you dummies, and maybe wipe it off once in a while too.
https://preview.redd.it/tf8kadosh02a1.jpg?width=318&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=32ee1cfabf9993d8aa974c9c6133dd7212acdea7 Big wealthy gas station corporation with LOTS of foot traffic 24 hours a day? Why not buy the smallest, slowest, most fragile copier in our inventory that's the most sensitive to dust and dirt? BOSS ALWAYS HOLLERIN' AT ME This 1-man Army thought he knew everything. He once spied on me at a service call to see what I was doing and I saw his car in the parking lot. I knew he was lurking somewhere. Another time he came out of no where to observe me working, "happened to be in the neighborhood" and when I asked him questions about something I already knew the answer to, he didn't know. WTF dude, you trained me, how could you not know anything? And if you don't know, why are you observing me, you have no idea what I'm doing to make an assessment. My hatchback lock didn't work, had to slam it over and over again to get it to catch, and it was all seized up. Had to use a stick to prop it up because the shock absorbers didn't work anymore. He demanded I go get it fixed because his precious copier supplies might get stolen, need a good solid lock in it. Bro, I need a whole new damn car if you'd bother to notice. The lock is connected to a paint-peeling garbage can on 4 wheels. And someone is going to walk by my shitty car, look through the rust hole and say, "Holy crap! Let's steal all these priceless toner cartridges!" So I finally had it. Customers always bitchin' boss always bitchin' so I got some measure of revenge. I only did 1 service call before lunch, took a 2 hour lunch, and did 1 after, and that's it. I disassembled a copier down to the last screw, cleaned it from top to bottom, put it back together, threw the extra parts I didn't know where they belonged in the garbage can, and took my sweet ass time. Because the customers buy a yearly service contract, they get all the basic maintenance and replacement for general wear and tear. My boss would cut corners and tell me not to replace things until they flew apart and we had no choice but to replace them. So, out of revenge, the nice customers basically got a new machine from me. I put in all new stuff whether they needed it or not, and shit-canned the replacement. "Boy, you are using a lot of parts, do they really need all that?" "Yep, it's all crap, and now we probably don't have to hit that place for another 6 months or more." I had a service call I didn't get to, so I put it off for 1st thing the next morning. Boss leaves me a message that we have a meeting 1st thing in the morning. But he left it like at 8pm that night, and I didn't notice it. He calls and screams at me why he showed up early and I wasn't there, so like I had to go ALL the way back after my service call to see what size corn cob was up his ass, and he balls me about about all kinds of dumb shit that's really his own fault. So I spiked the ball back in his court every time he lobbed it over the net cuz if he didn't do "A", then "B" would never have happened. He gets so red-faced and mad, he hits the table, "I'm canceling this meeting!" I'm like dude, it's YOUR meeting, you can storm out any time you want, I didn't want to be here in the first place. Long story short.... (too late) I told him he can TRY to fix his own shit if he thinks he can, b/c I quizzed him on a lot of stuff I figured out on my own, and he didn't know any of it. He tried to say I was stupid and incompetent, and told him he was stupid and incompetent WITH evidence. We took inventory together so he wouldn't later claim I stole anything, and instead of burning rubber out of the parking lot with my middle finger high out the window, my car pretty much sputtered getting warmed up loudly with holes in the muffler, and I left in a cloud of smoke from an overheating and shot engine, ever so slowly and anti-climatically out of his sight. I tried driving by a few times, honked the horn with my middle finger up, but he doesn't see me. Maybe there's too much smoke to make out who it is. Junk man gave me 50 bucks for scrap when it wouldn't even start anymore, and I found a brand new box of copier toner in the back seat I forgot to give back. It's worth twice as much as my car. I'm keeping it, may trade it in for a used car later on. Talk to you later hombres... Hate my job~ submitted by Jim__Anchower to hatemyjob [link] [comments] |
2022.11.10 03:43 Queenof-brokenhearts Could the Virginville, Pennsylvania Jane Doe (1992) be a match to Terry Slaughenhoupt?
| Terry Slaugenhoupt, age twenty-eight, was last seen on January 6, 1991. She was returning home from a date, according to NamUs. Per NBC news, linked below, she returned to her house in Pittsburgh and then a few minutes later left to find a pay phone, as the apartment did not have its own phone. She was never seen again. Terry Slaugenhoupt had long brown hair and hazel eyes. NamUs says that her hair was curly “at the time”, which might mean that it was straight before. Her ears were pierced and she had a scar on her forehead. She was about five foot two and weighed somewhere in the range of one hundred and five to one hundred and twenty pounds. On June third, nineteen ninety two, the skeletonized body of a Caucasian woman, estimated to be between twenty-five and forty years old, was found in Virginville. From Pittsburgh to Virginville is a little over 250 miles, or about three hours away. You basically have to cross the entire state from east to west. But of course, this was the nineteen nineties, and according to Mapquest, you’d really just have to follow the highways. The Jane Doe’s hair was brown and about three inches in length. The Doe’s height was estimated to be around five foot three, and on Doe Network the weight is estimated to be around one hundred and twenty pounds. The Jane Doe had “severe periodontal disease”. I’m not sure if that’s something that one would see in a picture, but there’s no mention of any sort of dental issue related to Terry Slaugenhoupt. Then again there’s no mention of any noticeable dental distinguishing features at all related to Slaugenhoupt, so there’s really no way of knowing. For what it’s worth, in the picture I found, her teeth look fine. As for jewelry, according to NamUs, the Jane Doe was wearing a “digital sport type wrist watch with a small face, plastic band that is orange, pink and yellow, a gray metal ring without stones and a cylindrical metallic structure 4.5" length & 3/32 of an inch in diameter. There was also a small object appearing to be a dolphin.” There is no mention of any jewelry that Slaugenhoupt was or was not wearing because no one saw her for very long after her date. I suppose that it wouldn’t be unusual for a woman to be wearing a watch or jewelry out on a date so I see no reason to rule her out based on that. I think the noses in the pictures look similar, and the smile lines, if that’s what they’re called. can also see a bit of similarity in the ears The age fits, the height is only an inch off and the weight seems reasonably close too. Both had brown hair, and Terry Slaugenhoupt falls well in the age range given for the Jane Doe. The problem is really the distance, but people can move a lot in a year. I just don’t know if the distance is enough to exclude her. 2022.09.24 07:08 WildAphrodite Is there a Publix in Branson, MO?
Yes, I'm asking another question this week. My friend is moving to Missouri, and wanted to know if there was a Publix there. I didn't think so (since it's a southern thing), but they said they found something about one in Branson. Well, we all go to look it up and on the Publix site, nothing comes up. MapQuest bring you
this allegedly owner-verified entry, however.
Going to Street view for its address, interestingly enough, brings you...
Not much. My question is... Is there a Publix there? Was there ever? If not... What's up with this entry?
