I have a BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering from an average university and have been working in the Mainframe industry since I graduated college around 4 years ago. Right now I make $160k as a mainframe tech consultant. I'm on track to make over $200k in a couple years. Problem is, I don't like what I do and it's starting to take a toll on my mental health. I feel stuck right now because much of the experience I've gained in the past 4 years is mainframe-specific and not transferrable to other jobs.
I want to pivot to working with technology that is more modern and exciting. AI/ML/data science in particular excite me not just because of the hype but because I have a genuine interest in them. Even if I can't go straight into AI/ML I think a move into a more modern software engineering job would be a huge step in the right direction. Now I'm trying to decide what steps I need to take to make the move. Going back to school for a grad degree and sacrificing $320k+ in salary + 2 years of tuition/living expenses sounds pretty terrible to me.
So, can I break into a more modern software engineering job without going back to school by learning the relevant skills, doing projects, and building a portfolio in my spare time? Is a good career in AI/ML achievable without a graduate degree for someone with my background?

Life is good. Johnny Winters has been steadily growing his career as a software engineer and developer, programming and coding his way to the top of several different companies before finally being snagged on to the last one that promised him the highest pay. Whether he works in the fancy office, or from home, a steady six-figure salary keeps him more than afloat, and a cool, easy life of doing work that he loved ensured to keep him from falling into a depressive state. Because apart from his job being the only thing moving in his life, everything else has gone completely still. His social life? Nonexistent. He was a workaholic and only recently began to wind that down to appreciate life more. He was a 28 year old man - only two more years until he hits 30 and has been successful so far. But the time for youth and freedom was running thin, at least, in his mind. His friends from high school spread out all over the states, hell, some - the world. Relationships? When would he have the time? His focus was primarily on work. Although he’s fairly attractive, he’s unsure of how he would attract anyone now that he’s actually looking. Bars? Clubs? I originally just replied to the the post of the guy complaining about engineers being cold and no one wanting to hire graduates. I figured it's an old post now and it got removed by the mods anyway, but I'd like him/her or others feeling discouraged with finding a position in an engineering field to see what I have to say. (As someone who took a while to find a career of my own)
Response to "Why are engineers so cold and unsympathetic":
Why don't you list out what you're currently doing to try to get a career in this field instead of just complaining that you can't? You know, so people can give you advice. You're not hearing what you need to hear because you don't ask (especially when you just whine about it) and no one is going to tell you what you want to hear. I know plenty of people who went through college with me that never found a job in an engineering field. Just having a degree doesn't cut it. Companies don't hire degrees, they hire people. With that in mind, if you can't find a job, it's time to start looking at what you're doing wrong instead of assuming that companies just refuse to hire graduates.
1.) You're getting a "fuck you" attitude from people because you have a "fuck you" attitude. Read your post again and tell me that doesn't come off as entitled. Having a degree doesn't mean you just deserve to get a job with that degree. I spent tens of hours studying for each position I applied for. Treat interviewing like a full-time job. Engineering is a broad field. If you apply to a position you better know exactly what that position entails and be prepared to talk about it in technical terms and relate any experience you have from school, work, life to that position. 2.) Yeah, having internships helps. Students who have had internships have real world experience that hiring managers can drill into to determine if you're a good candidate. Without an internship, what are they supposed to ask you? How well you did group projects? Those people that are interviewing went through college too and they know that half of college is basic group projects that don't really mean anything in the real world. Having multiple internships is even better. It means that you're desirable as a worker because why else would you land multiple internships? Even if it's with the same company, it's proof that they wanted you back. 3.) Cutthroat? Yeah, there's a lot of jobs and an equally lot of people applying to those jobs, including other graduates like you. If people you went to school with are now working in an engineering field and you're still not, just saying it's cutthroat isn't a good excuse. You're vying for a professional job in a STEM field. Did you think you weren't going to face competition for employment? 4.) What stage of the process are you getting stuck at? Are you not even getting interviews? Time to update your resume or work on your skill-sets. Are you not making it past a recruiter? (You've got serious issues if you can't impress a recruiter, especially if they're the ones contacting you initially) It means that after talking to you, they don't even think that you're impressive enough of a candidate to bring to a hiring manager. That's seriously an issue and it means you're either so devoid of any engineering skills or knowledge that they can pick up on it OR you suck at talking to people or presenting yourself as a good candidate. Are you not getting a second interview after the initial interview? Maybe you need to coach yourself on common questions that hiring managers ask in that field or just basic interviewing skills. If you're making it through multiple interviews, you're at the point where it's just a matter of time before you find the right match, but you may need to be applying to more places than you think you are.
I spent an average of 10-20 hours preparing for each position I applied for once I got an interview date scheduled. I watched countless youtube videos of recruiters talking about what they're looking for, hiring managers talking about what they're looking for, coaching myself on questions that I got asked in previous interviews, etc. I'd review the theory behind common skills required for the position I was applying for so that I could talk about it in depth if it came up. I made sure that I could explain everything on my resume, that I could competently talk about what I did during my internships and group projects. I hate interviewing and I don't consider myself a good public speaker, so if you're like me, this isn't optional, you need to be practicing interviewing skills.
Just a caveat, but I did eventually find an amazing position with a great company that I love. Sure, it's a high stress career, but I earn it every day and I've been rewarded for my efforts along the way and I work with an amazing engineering team and an equally amazing manager. In saying that, I did not have a job lined up when I graduated because of personal issues getting in the way at the time. I was delivering pizza, interviewing for engineering positions on my days off, and I hated my life at the time. (There is nothing wrong with delivering pizza, a job is a job and I'm not above it, but it obviously wasn't what I wanted.) While being a pizza delivery driver after college, I remember getting past a second interview, being brought in to a company headquarters, and given a practical knowledge exam where I was grilled on theory and actual specifics of what I'd be doing in that position. I left feeling like I did well, but I did not get the job. I was devastated at the time because I felt like I was so close, but the dream was once again gone and it was back to delivering pizzas the next day. The starting terms of that position was that I was going to join furloughed and the pay was only $54,000 salaried. (This was in the middle of the pandemic) I look back now and laugh that it's one of the best things that's happened to me because of where I am now in my career and life. So if you're feeling discouraged, the only thing you can do is to literally not give up.
Everyone in an engineering career has had a different experience. This is just my experience shared with you. Others may disagree or have their own advice, feel free to share in the comments. I can guarantee you though, that complaining on reddit to a bunch of engineers isn't going to help you get a job. A bunch of engineers in various stages of their career and life that are sitting on valuable advice that could help you if you'd only ask instead of complain.

And now? I've lost them both: my ex (now) and the guy who courted me. They both blocked me. I know it's my fault. I know I deserve this. I know I'm a cheater. I know I hurt two special people in my life. I know I deserve this.
I know I deserve this ruin I brought upon myself.
And now, I'm left to face the consequences of my actions. It's a painful reality to accept, knowing that I brought this upon myself. I had two remarkable individuals in my life, and through my own choices, I pushed them away. I betrayed their trust, shattered their hearts, and now I find myself standing amidst the ruins of what could have been.
The weight of regret and guilt rests heavily upon my shoulders. I can't help but replay the moments where I let my desires cloud my judgment, where I succumbed to temptation and veered off the path of loyalty and commitment. I was selfish, blinded by my own desires, and I betrayed the love and trust they placed in me.

My ex (now) is living below average. I loved him for who he was and how he treated me. I didn't even care that I was the one paying for our dates and such. I was a simpleton, but when PJ came into my life, I realized my worth. I felt like a princess, as if I were living in a dream. Money wasn't an issue for him. He was living the dream that everyone else desired, with a seven-digit salary and more.
Yes, I was dazzled, given that PJ could secure my future. I even witnessed him purchasing a huge lot in his province. But I just couldn't give him everything he wanted since I was in a six-month-long relationship with Noel.
I feel so guilty. I feel so ashamed. I feel embarrassed for what I did, for my actions, for using PJ every time Noel and I had an argument. I am truly sorry for both of you.

Forgive me reddit for i have sinned, i popped over to twitter real quick and watched a bunch of people flinging shit because of a video of 2 women at a restaurant paying a 2.5 mil lira bill for 1 moutabal 1 sawda djej 1 rakakat 1 fatouch a small water and a soft drink.
I didn't get the hype and i wanna know if my mindset is wrong.
The way i see it 2.5 mil is roughly $25 and if we compare that to " iyem el 3ez" thats 37k 2oul 40k with tips. Thats not expensive concidering you are at a restaurant that you went to willingly and its certainly not more expensive than what it was pre-crisis if anything alot of the fnb is actually cheaper now.
i know there is the whole "eza 3am bto2bad dollar" argument, but if your not why are you going to a restaurant?
Also there was a post somewhere where a bunch of expats( all the love to our overseas fam) are loosing it saying that business owners are price gouging and taking advantage of foreigner influx and i dont see it. Simplest example is mar mkhayel, pre crisis the average price of an almaza was 7 to 10k thats 5 to 6 USD where as now its around 2 to 3 USD unless you wanna go to those upscale places in which case you're gonna pay upscale prices
I got hit hard during the crisis like so many people i had to start from absolute scartch and as much as i love clubing and pubing and eating out i HAD to make some adjustments based on my income( lol)
The average salary even in $ is lower then what it used to be but raw material is still the same price, local purchase power has taken a massive hit is it really that unethical for a business owner to increase some of his prices so that maybe he can make some extra cash to carry him through the low seasons? are we demanding that business owners suffer the losses so that we maintain a frivolous lifestyle? Ma 3am b2oul ma fi shady businesses bass im not seeing it as much as its being talked about.

If this post is not related to the sub, pardon me. I have been a software engineer since 2015 and my salary was $65,000. Then I switched in 2016 and salary was $78,000 and I worked on the same salary for 4 years. Then unemployment hit me and I got the job last year and I am at $120,000.
I am a masters in computer science from CU Boulder. Can you guys share your salary range as a software engineer in Denver and I want to check how much I am making, is it wayyyyyy lower than the average or above average?

I don't know where else to post this, but this seems like a good place. I just can't get it out of my head how the boomers have completely foked over the younger generations. I mean just look at the salaries that they used to have in the 70's and 80's! An uneducated white male could walk into a factory and walk out with a handshake and a job. He could support his wife and 7 kids on that one salary! I mean they only had one car, that was constantly breaking down. He actually knew how to work on it and could fix anything in his 2 bedroom 1 bath home, because it was either fix it himself or go without since he couldn't actually afford to pay anyone else to do it. But that was because he had to save as much as he could so that he could take the lavish vacation of family camping for a week every summer. But since he didn't have an education, he knew the importance of education and made all his kids get an education. Of coarse most boomers are greedy bastards, so they "couldn't afford" to pay their kids tuitions so there they go again foking over the younger generations. I mean for me I just can't believe how the boomers have foked over my generation. Me, my SO, and my white male boomer dad all have to live together, it's literally the only way I can afford rent in Seattle!! It literally requires 3 peoples income to cover rent here! There's 9 degrees between the 3 of us and that's still the reality of it! Of coarse, they're all degrees in dumbass things from private schools that cost 100k per degree but I was told that didn't matter! I just..... when are those damn boomers going to take responsibility for what they've done?? When are they going to start paying their fair share of taxes?? Do you know that the average ceo makes 400 times the amount of their lowest paid employee? Granted people like Musk make that all in stock options, but when are we going to start taxing their stocks- that can adjust in price at any time? I mean seems fair to me to tax people on unrealized money. So I have been with a family for almost two years. When I was hired part of the family spent most of their time in another state due to shared custody with a previous spouse. The family has 4 children They are 16, 11, 9, and 5. I was hired in with a live in nanny (I do not live in) I was employed to work mostly every other weekend while the family had custody of the 9 year old, and the 11, and 5 year old, and to drive the 16 year old to and from school a few days a week until he got his license. I also would be required to make a 2 hour drive every other Thursday and Sunday to get and take back the 9 year old and stay overnight both nights.
One parent has the 9 year old. One has the 16 and 11 year old. And they have the 5 year old with each other.
I got paid a salary of 700 a week every week regardless of hours and that was amazing at first because I was only working half of the month. I was also told that I would not be needed as much when the oldest kid got their license. Now the job has dramatically changed. The live in quit and they hired another who did not work out. They also gained full custody of the 11 year old, so now the 11 and 5 year old are always there. I was asked if i was okay with being the only nanny and told my schedule wont change much. I now work 12 hours days with maybe one day off a week unless they go out of town. Sometimes two days off but rarely consecutively. I got a raise 1 year and four months in but I am averaging about 13-14 dollars an hour now which is leaps and bounds less than my average hourly wage when I started and my job is tremendously harder now. I am so drained and burnt out which makes me so sad because I loved my job. I do not know how to bring this up, I really put my all into my job and have only told my bosses no one time during my entire employment because I was physically unable to do the task. I had just had surgery. My one boss was so angry at me for not doing it. It was cleaning and organizing their playroom, which includes moving several large objects and I was not able to lift anything heavier than 5 lbs for two weeks. I was asked to do this 4 days after major surgery. The family was also out of town at this point so it legitimately did not matter that I was not able to clean the already tidy room and 100% rearrange it for another week and a half. Because of this incident I am extremely nervous to voice how I am feeling. I not only want to work way less with my maximum shift being 8 hours, but I want to be making a far better wage. Honestly I feel like I should be averaging 30-50 per hour. Taking care of three kids that different in age and making them get along and be happy all day everyday is almost impossible. The family that I work for are borderline billionaires and I am making teenage babysitter wages. I am exhausted every day because I am gone all day with the kids doing everything they want, like going to zoo’s, parks, trampoline parks, amusement parks and literally everything they want no matter how far away. I play very hard with them and put everything I can into making them happy which is not an easy task. I am so nervous to ask about my schedule issues and salary issues. I actually feel neglected and hurt by this. I am extremely attached to the kids and the family isn’t really in the position to let me go but I am afraid of this happening.

At the same time, fundamentals continued to worsen. In May, the Manufacturing PMI dropped to 46.9 from April’s 47.1, below the predicted 47, marking the seventh consecutive month of decline in the manufacturing industry. New orders and inventories contracted, while production saw a rebound and employment increased at a faster rate. Additionally, there was a significant decrease in price pressures.
Philadelphia Fed President Patrick Harker suggested that the central bank might forgo a rate increase in the upcoming meeting. However, he emphasized that the choice to maintain current interest rates should not be interpreted as the conclusion of the tightening phase.

South Korea: In May 2023, the consumer price index in the country saw a 3.3% year-on-year increase, compared to a 3.7% rise in April, showing a continued easing for the fourth consecutive month. Might be a bit niche but does anyone know the general pay range for a “community connector”? I’m thinking of applying for this role with a local community centre and they want to know my salary expectations but ‘community connector’ is hard to google and find information about. From what I can gather, the role came about during covid to help with the rising amount of people in need, and the role includes things like service navigation (connecting people to the service they need), food support, family support eg parenting advice or family violence help etc. It does seem very varied. Does anyone work in this role or know what the average salary is for a full time employee (40 hr weeks) ?
