2023.05.29 04:41 ansi09 SquadsLabs - What Is SVM, The Solana Virtual Machine
| Source: https://twitter.com/SimkinStepan/status/1662898945482448896 Throwback to our SVM article with a graphic that triggered quite a few friends outside of Solana. https://squads.so/blog/solana-svm-sealevel-virtual-machine https://preview.redd.it/0oihy9u05q2b1.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=17d6de2317c5bf21c74d783da242c95bcf5cc1c9 What Is SVM - The Solana Virtual Machine Solana has gained significant attention as a next-generation, highly scalable blockchain, largely due to its exceptional performance capabilities that can handle thousands of transactions per second with almost no fees. One of the key elements of Solana's advanced technology is its execution environment, SVM, which includes the Sealevel parallelization engine. This article covers the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) and how this innovative infrastructure enables the Solana blockchain to deliver enhanced performances compared to traditional EVM blockchains like Ethereum. While EVM has for a long time been the dominant virtual machine standard in crypto, we'll also explore how SVM is gradually expanding through rollup solutions such as Nitro and Eclipse. The Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) and Sealevel Explained The Solana Virtual Machine, SVM in short, is the execution environment that processes transactions and smart contracts/programs on the Solana network. In order to better comprehend SVM, we first need to understand how a virtual machine works within a crypto network. In the context of blockchains, a virtual machine (VM) is a piece of software that runs programs, more often referred to as a runtime environment to execute smart contracts for a crypto network. When a transaction is submitted, the virtual machine of the network is responsible for processing it and managing the state of the blockchain (the current status of the entire network) impacted by the execution of this transaction. The specific rules for changing the state of the network are defined by the VM. When processing a transaction, the VM converts the smart contract code into a format that can be carried out by the validators' hardware. On Solana, the main languages for writing smart contract are Rust, C, and C++, which are compiled into BPF bytecode by the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM), enabling transactions to be executed efficiently by the nodes of the network (validators). https://preview.redd.it/nst02ge65q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=874b536992fd0e7f88a0304092dc7ce4815b283d The nodes of the Solana network, known as validators, each run their own isolated environment of the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) to maintain consensus across the blockchain. When a smart contract is deployed (modifying the network's state), it communicates the required state changes to the runtime. The Solana runtime then forwards these state changes to the SVM instances operating within each validator's system, where all validator nodes receive a copy and translate it, updating the blockchain. This distribution of SVM instances across validators results in a decentralized network, reducing the risk of DDoS attacks or shutdowns. Moreover, this isolation ensures that potential bugs or vulnerabilities in a smart contract do not compromise the security or stability of the entire Solana network. In summary, these SVM instances can be viewed as “mini-computers” that execute the necessary operations to update the state of the Solana network based on the provided instructions by transactions. While many blockchains today rely on the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Solana has developed its own VM, featuring unique capabilities that deliver improved performance. https://preview.redd.it/m66bayw75q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=0adca84e8a4a80140932e27fb3bdb226793c5d50 The key component of SVM is Sealevel. This engine enables “horizontal” scaling within the Solana execution environment by allowing multiple smart contracts to run simultaneously without impacting each other's performance, a concept known as parallel processing. This is possible due to Solana smart contracts describing which data (state) will be read or written while executing in the runtime. This lets transactions without conflicts to run at the same time, as well as those just reading the same information. Sealevel makes it thus possible for the SVM to handle tens of thousands of transactions simultaneously, as opposed to processing them one by one like the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). SVM vs EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) While both EVM and SVM perform similar functions, the Solana VM is much more efficient and faster. On EVM, when a smart contract transfers a dollar from a user’s balance, this transaction is stored within the specific contract's storage. This design creates potential issues if the Ethereum Virtual Machine attempts to process multiple transactions in parallel. For example, two different smart contracts might simultaneously attempt to spend the user’s balance, or another contract might read this same user’s balance while it is in the process of being updated, leading to inconsistencies and conflicts. https://preview.redd.it/vt9e6em95q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=249cfac3361387fe9044ea136098312193061180 In contrast, the Solana account model separates data, such as user’s balance, for better organization and efficiency. Transactions on Solana also require explicit specification of the data they will read and modify before execution in the SVM. As said earlier, this allows programs that do not interact with the same data to run concurrently, which helps to alleviate congestion and reduce high fees. For example, the Solana VM can process Toly sending one dollar to Raj simultaneously with Armani sending three dollars to Chase. https://preview.redd.it/2lh4146b5q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc2393de7f9abe12c0a2d0cb4598a1a2f3c6bd65 The reason EVM struggles with processing multiple transactions simultaneously is partly due to it being a "single-threaded" runtime environment, which can only process one contract at a time. Due to this, the EVM design does not take advantage of multi-core hardware, which means only one core of the validator’s hardware is actively processing transactions, while the other cores remain underutilized. This often results in network congestion and higher transaction fees. However, it is important to note that other factors than its multi-threaded runtime also contribute to EVM limitations, such as the desire to maintain low hardware requirements for running nodes. On the other hand, Sealevel optimizes the performance of the Solana runtime by enabling efficient use of the available hardware resources. SVM is a multi-threaded runtime environment, designed to process multiple transactions in parallel by using all the cores available of the validator machine. This makes Solana able to scale more effectively as the hardware of its validators improves over time. The Solana Virtual Machine can also manage transaction fees in a better way thanks to its architecture. This has led to the development of localized fee markets, which enable fees to be assigned per smart contract. In contrast, EVM chains rely on global fee markets, meaning that an NFT mint can affect a swap or DeFi transaction, even though the transactions are unrelated. For all these reasons, SVM's parallel processing capabilities allow Solana to achieve significantly higher TPS, resulting in faster transaction speeds, and with almost invisible fees compared to the EVM architecture. This positions SVM as a next-generation blockchain environment, far more efficient and performant. As more developers recognize this, we are starting to see greater adoption of the SVM as an execution environment for smart contracts, with an emerging ecosystem of SVM rollups taking shape. The Emerging Ecosystem of SVM Rollups A rollup is a type of blockchain scaling solution that processes transactions outside of a Layer 1 blockchain (e.g., Solana) and later posts the data to a Layer 1 retroactively. Rollups aim to reduce network congestion and transaction fees by bundling multiple transactions together into a single "proof" that is then submitted to the main chain. The greatest advantage of building a rollup is the ability to fully customize the chain. This customization allows for various use cases, such as tailored orderbooks, encrypted mempools for minimizing MEV (Miner Extractable Value), or permissioned applications designed to meet specific requirements. A virtual machine can also be used to simplify the deployment process for developers on other chains that use the same VM. This network effect has greatly benefited Ethereum and its VM, since it was the first runtime environment for crypto smart contracts. As a result, EVM has been the primary execution environment used for building rollup blockchains. Among the two types of rollups, Optimistic and Zk, Optimistic rollups such as Arbitrum are the most widespread. Recently, SVM has seen numerous advancements aimed at bringing the rollup technology to Solana developers. The main projects building rollups for Solana are Nitro and Eclipse. https://preview.redd.it/0kulgv3f5q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=13fccad56a805fd1d128d600e0b3917f35c1a1de Nitro is an Optimistic rollup solution, similar to Arbitrum or Optimism, that utilizes the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) to enable Solana developers to port their dApps to various ecosystems. Nitro plans to launch on Sei first, a sector-specific trading chain built on Cosmos, before expanding to other chains. It uses SVM to execute transactions with parallelization, which means users will be able to perform as they would on Solana, while Nitro using Sei for settlement and consensus. Furthermore, with Sei being part of the Cosmos ecosystem, Nitro’s projects and its users will be able to benefit from the IBC interoperability technology, accessing Cosmos assets and liquidity. Another SVM rollup solution in development is Eclipse, which aims to facilitate the deployment of customizable rollups. Eclipse's optimistic rollups enable projects to create their own distinct app chains while benefiting from the security of established networks (e.g., Cosmos app-chains, Polygon, Ethereum) and leveraging the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM). SVM serves as the execution environment, with Eclipse handling settlement, and consensus and data availability (DA) managed by the developer's chosen Layer 1 network. Currently, Eclipse offers Optimistic rollup solutions but is working on launching zk-rollups as well. https://preview.redd.it/hyak28tg5q2b1.png?width=4000&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d4d1790951fd89db3cffb4c0b5ceee90f08b9f5 Eclipse has already announced two rollup solutions built on top of SVM: - Polygon SVM: With this rollup, any project built on Solana can easily deploy onto the Polygon network;
- Cascade: Introduced by Injective, Cascade is an SVM rollup optimized for the IBC ecosystem. It will allow Solana projects to effortlessly deploy to Cascade and access the assets and liquidity of the Cosmos app-chains. Moreover, projects on Injective can now utilize Cascade's parallelized SVM.
All those solutions are simplifying the usage of the Solana VM and expanding its reach. Users from other chains will also be able to “taste” the Solana parallelization experience without friction, which could lead to more realization of the SVM superiority and thus to more projects moving their dApps to Solana to benefit from its architecture and onboard more users. SVM Is A Next-Generation Blockchain Environment for Developers Despite being only three years old, Solana has already demonstrated impressive performance, and the development of scaling solutions like Nitro and Eclipse on top of its VM highlights the success of its innovative execution architecture. Solana has been able to learn from the challenges faced by older networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin wasn't designed for smart contracts, which led to the emergence of Ethereum. Similarly, Ethereum wasn't prepared for mass adoption and high-speed transactions, paving the way for Solana and parallel processing. Moreover, access to the SVM environment is becoming easier for developers, with Neon Labs bringing in Solidity compatibility with the Solana runtime, as well as the upcoming Runtime v2 upgrade, which should enable developers to build SVM-compatible dApps using a plethora of programming languages such as Move. It is evident that the Solana VM offers a more advanced environment for building next-generation applications. The parallel processing of transactions enables higher throughput, akin to what is possible in traditional finance, enabling developers to build any kind of product without worrying about speed limits or fees. Building on a chain with TPS as high as 15 will not bring crypto to mass adoption. Thanks to SVM and Sealevel, Solana can (already) handle thousands of transactions without congestion nor noticeable gas fees, making it a perfect environment for building those new applications. And as the hardware of validators improves, Solana’s Sealevel runtime will be able to process even more transactions in parallel, widening the gap between SVM and EVM while onboarding more users. Squads will support the expansion of the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM) and bring multi-signature (multisig) functionality to the whole SVM ecosystem, enabling anyone to use the best blockchain execution environment with the best self-custody experience to manage on-chain assets. 2023.05.29 04:07 FireLizard172 Fire Protection Pre-Career Advice
I'm currently heading into my senior year where I'll start to take graduate level FPE courses. So far I've done two internships within FPE that engage in code consulting and a bit of design. I've read through a history of posts within this forum of how I can better distinguish myself amongst my peers. (Seen a lot of discussion of NICET certification but not sure if I should pursue this as I plan to get my PE in the future)
I'm particularly interested in the design aspect of FP whether it be FA or sprinkler systems. As I mentioned I have some of these courses lined up in the next year or two but am looking to gain a further edge and learn as much as possible.
Is there any advice an experienced professional can give as how I can most efficiently spend my free time outside work in learning these aspects? As someone who doesn't have a solid foundation of FPE should I enroll in the NFPA 13 and 72 Online Series Training? I've also heard that FireTech offers some good courses. (Not exactly sure what's best for my set of circumstances) I plan to take the FE exam next year, but am wondering if there are any initial certifications I should look into to further build my resume before I graduate? I don't mind spending my own money in these courses, but again looking to separate myself amongst my peers, any advice is appreciated for an eager and passionate student.

2023.05.29 03:00 Jcook_14 Interchain Security and Eigen Layer: comparing the anatomy of two systems of shared security
TLDR at the bottom
Intro
Two systems of shared security have peaked my interest lately, as they are somewhat reminiscent of each other, as the Ethereum ecosystems looks for the best way to scale out its network. While Ethereum attempts to scale its network out as much as possible, the Cosmos ecosystem is looking to eliminate the fragmented security issue it deals with, throughout its rapidly growing ecosystem.
Let’s discuss the fundamentals of both models:
Interchain Security:
Interchain Security allows for new or existing blockchains, to skip the line of finding validators and let’s them hook into the existing ATOM validator set. This means that projects can retain sovereignty, have fees on chain paid in their native currency and lease the Cosmos Hubs economic security.
The Hub validators, in the scenario of running a new ICS consumer chain, will need to run a new node to validate this new network. With this being the case, the validators will also have specific requirements regarding liveness, double signing and other actions that would result in a slashing/jailing. However, rather than this slashing or jailing happening on the consumer chain, it will be their ATOM stake, that is at risk of a slash or jailing, making the economic security linked to ATOM’s economic security.
What does it take from the protocol to be added to ICS? The chain has to be approved via ATOM Governance.
In this approval process they need to show as much info as possible to ensure this addition to the validator set will be worth the extra work a validator will have to do. But while this provides more work, it could show even more profit for ATOM validators and stakers.
These chains that lease ATOMs validator set, will be paying the ATOM validators and stakers in their native currency. Or they could pay fees in any fee token, that the consumer chain utilizes (so this could mean ATOM or another IBC native currency, could be used rather than the consumer chain having its own token). This additional yield will be on top of the staking rewards from ATOM (20% at time of writing).
Eigen Layer
Eigen Layer is a fascinating project, being built on Ethereum to allow for outside projects and chains to utilize Ethereum Validators in a way by which Ethereum validators can opt-in to validate a specific outside chain, and they will have specific requirements to meet, in order to not result in a slashing event. Essentially, under the Eigen Layer, it acts as a sort of middleman to execute slashing events, in the case of a misbehaving validator, and on behalf of a blockchain. However, instead of being a blockchain in itself, Eigen Layer is a smart contract on both Ethereum, and the new blockchain which each validator is responsible for validating.
Let me explain alittle more in depth
In the Eigen Layer model, an Ethereum validator will be able to opt-in to validating a new blockchain, utilizing the stake they ready have locked in their mainnet Ethereum stake. This process is called Restaking. The act of restaking, your stake, towards a new blockchain.
When these Validators opt-in, they have to spin up a new node running the specific code of the new blockchain, as well as the Eigen Layer smart contract on both chains. This new node, will communicate with the Eigen Layer contract, about the parameters required for the Validator to run this new node, as well as the slashing conditions for this new chain.
If a blockchain finds a Validator performing a malicious act, such as a double sign, for example, this blockchain will send a message to the smart contract on its chain, which will relay a message to the Ethereum mainnet contract, which will then unbond the Ethereum stake, slash the stake and send the remaining stake, to the validators receiving address.
This slashing mechanism, provided by the Eigen Layer smart contract, acts as a mechanism to keep the validator honest while validating the new Blockchain. It also means that Validators that opt-in to validate new chains, will likely find various new forms of revenue coming from chains seeking Ethereum’s economic Security.
Comparisons and conclusion:
Interchain Security and Eigen layer have very many similarities, in fact, Eigen layer actually tends to have many more direct similarities to Interchain Security V2, aka, Opt-in Security. This model makes it possible for Cosmos Hub validators to opt-in to specific blockchain that they may want to validate. In which case they have the exact same risk/reward set as V1 has.
However, the differences lay in the fundamentals of the base protocol of the security source. For example, the Cosmos Hub is built with IBC enabled. This makes general message passing, such as a message from a consumer chain to the Hub, regarding a slashable event seamless and wit no central trusted party performing such this task of message passing, as the functionality is built directly into the base protocol.
Eigen layer does not have this specific base layer functionality, and will have to rely on a seperate form of message passing, to inform the Eigen layer on Ethereum mainnet to slash a validator. In my research, it had not become totally apparent what method will be used for message passing, however, if there is a multisig used in it, then there is a general risk associated that is not associated with how Interchain Security is designed. However, it would be welcome to hear that the general message passing of slashing packets from Eigen layer is fully decentralized and trustless.
TLDR; Two systems of Shared Security, between Cosmos and Ethereum are being brought to market. Both of these aim to give devs sovereign control over the blockchain, while they outsource their block producing to an established set of validators with a large amount of economic security.
The differences are in the levels of the network at which they lay, with Interchain Security being at the base layer of the Cosmos Hub and Eigen layer just being a smart contract between two chains. However, both seek to make the process of building a blockchain more efficient through the model of shared security with no initial overhead for the Devs to worry about, with regard to economic security.
TLDR edit; Also, a difference in the architecture is that the Cosmos Hubs Interchain Security utilizes IBC as its general message passing protocol, to send slashing/jailing packets. Where Eigen layer connected chains will likely have to use a bridging protocol, which hopefully will be extremely effective and secure, rather than a simple 5/8 bridging protocol.

2023.05.29 02:29 Annaboonanaa Figuring out how to work with my new design team
I’m a graphic designer at a smaller company and I previously worked at a very large corporate company. I’m currently on a team that consists of myself, a graphic design intern, my boss who’s the SVP of marketing for the firm, and a partner of the firm. Only myself and the intern have graphic design experience. I’m finding it tremendously difficult working with my team and have voiced my issues. Some examples: if I’m creating a logo design, the partner of the firm needs to see it at every step of the way and he does not have a design background. I don’t necessarily trust his opinion which I think is the problem. He doesn’t give good feedback when we review things and he’ll say “it needs to be cooler” “it needs a vibrant color” but then can’t give me examples. I’ve asked for examples or even have asked what a cool logo is to him and he can’t give me anything. His schedule is booked up and making review meetings are hard or he wants me to literally flag him down to look at something. He recently told me he wants everyone on team to work on a logo together and I just don’t agree. I feel like we waste time going down rabbit holes of everyone’s different ideas of a logo. I’m supposed to lead design ideation and he doesn’t want a set “design idea” for a project - he wants everyone to have 10 ideas so we run down every options. It’s exhausting.
He wants me to come up with a review process for designs and I want him to only be included at the first meeting and last. He’s said he’s trying to take a step back from being so involved but doesn’t do anything to do that. His feedback slows down the process and I feel like I have a different style than him and he can’t accept someone else’s design as good. I would say my designs are very modern and simple and he constantly tells me my simple designs “don’t look finished” or “need to be cooler” but can’t give me direction on how to achieve that. It makes me feel like I’m not a good designer and I should just know how to make a design he likes. I feel like I’m not designing for the client but designing for him. My boss doesn’t really help out with any of this because she knows the partner just loves being involved.
He’s also having us design websites for clients using square space and I will say I can use it but they could be better. I want to design a website and then hand it off to a developer to code it. I told him this because I feel like the websites we are creating could be better. He disagrees and wants me and the intern to learn how to code websites and makes it seem like we should want to learn because we should want to develop professionally. I just think it’s so much. I don’t want to code a whole website, I want to design it. I think when he sees a graphic designer he sees: an artist, a designer, a project manager, a copywriter, a social media manager, a web developer.
I guess I’m just looking for advice on what to do or how to handle this. I’ve only been there for 6 months but it’s been exhausting trying to figure it out.

2023.05.29 02:27 abelinkin84 What's your process?
Hey all, I'm starting to work on a game of that I want to build. I'm completely new to Lua, modeling, and any type of game development. But, I have been a web developer for 20 years so I'm hoping that will help. I'm getting overwhelmed though with the order in which to do things. For example, do I build models first, then start designing the layout of land, then start coding? Or what? Also, I'm by no means any kind of designer and my creativity is... Null lol
So, what is your process? What do you start with? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated too. Happy developing!

2023.05.29 01:36 Jcook_14 Interchain Security and Eigen Layer: comparing the anatomy of two systems of shared security

| Perfectly Unadulterated Regal Excellency. P.U.R.E. Named in dedication to four of the greatest technical wrestlers of all-time – Mr. Perfect, Kurt Angle, William Regal, and Bret Hart – tonight is as big as it ever gets for the Blitz brand as we embark on our first-ever edition of BTE's Blitz equivalent PPV! Much like those men, if you wish to be successful in Pure Rules, you must embody intelligence, grit, and a goal-driven mindset to reach the top, so keep that in mind as you immortalise your names into history on this INSANE 14-match card! Emanating from the Twickenham Stadium in London, England, home to the English National Rugby Team, 82,000 strong will be here to witness history in one of the biggest crowds in FBE’s history, beating even BTE attendance numbers! A huge thank you to Petite Jupiter’s PJs ‘N PB&Js for sponsoring us tonight, commemorating the long-awaited return of a legend with comfort for the body and the soul! Now, get strapped in for the show of a lifetime as England’s own Royal Blood sets the tone for the night with a live performance of their latest single, “Mountains At Midnight”! Perfect Quarter Non-Title Champion vs Champion: FBE Television Champion Cactus Mike vs FBE Junior Heavyweight Champion Paddy Murphy Opening in HUGE fashion is a first-time ever dream meeting between two of the most beloved members of the roster! On one side is the two-time Television Champion with SIX overall defences to his name, The Ark’s Cactus Mike! Recently having his own one-year anniversary celebration much like Blitz last week, he’s been an icon in every division he’s taken part in, from being a component of the thrilling 3-way rivalry with John and Jay Castle, to an intense Shining-esque blood feud with Happy, to being one of the most consistent Pure Rules competitors, taking the likes of Inferno and Apeirogone to their limits. Proving his mettle in the Shining Light League, tonight more than ever can put him in the conversation for being next in line! On the other side is the current Junior Heavyweight Champion, the Sham-Rock ‘N Scot Connection’s Paddy Murphy! Following a career trajectory similar to the Cardiac Cactus himself in his first few months, he’s rapidly elevated himself from a youngblood to one of the most emotionally riveting performers in the company today, having taken the Junior Division by storm under the guidance of his Sensei and his Dojo. Further greatness surely ahead of the World’s Most Wanted, his 6-point tournament run more than proving his potential, this could be his moment of redemption that catapults him into the next stratosphere, another Ark member having been the only obstacle between him and the Semi Finals! Prompt: Rebook The British Bulldog’s WWF Intercontinental Championship Reign (Max 1000 Words) Petite Jupiter Invitational: Arslan Malik vs Ferdinand Maxim vs Guy Fawkes vs Mr. Calcote Miller vs Vix It’s finally happening, laddies! Initially announced for the first-ever BTE, the Petite Jupiter Invitational was a Battle Royale scheduled to commemorate the legacy of the then recently retired Shining Light, with the winner earning an Intercontinental Championship shot. Though plans fell through, there’s no reason it shouldn’t take place on the first BTE-level show of the Pure Division! Whilst a secondary title doesn’t yet exist on Blitz, the winner of this match can definitely expect their name to be held in higher regards, leaving with a trophy they can cherish when looking back on the moment that elevated them to the next level, one competitor from this plucky spread of rising stars being immortalised. Will it be the Ass-Kicker Arslan Malik punching a hole through the competition? Perhaps Le Prince de Paris Ferdinand Maxim can make his kingdom even more golden? Maybe former Junior Heavyweight Champion Guy Fawkes can break bank in another division? Could Big 4 Main Eventer Mr. Calcote Miller be in line for a return to glory? Or is the most synonymous with the original prize of this match, former FBC Intercontinental Champion Vix soaring into the stars? Prompt: Book the next year of any championship of your choosing (Max 1000 Words) Mark Steel vs Michael Menzies II In recent weeks, something of a rivalry has begun to brew between Death to Juniors and their latest targets, the Sensei-led duo of the Sham-Rock ‘N Scot Connection. With Paddy Murphy taking DTJ’s Junior Title and Michael Menzies going to war with Joshua Epps and Mark Steel in back-to-back weeks, why stop there? When the Future-Proof last tested his skills against DTJ, he was lost, without direction, searching for a means of survival. But what difference a month makes, now a completely transformed star since replacing the Kalamity surname, finding himself in strong company, no longer to be soloed out by the vultures of the Heavyweight Division. Still, he can’t solely rely on friends to make it big. A recent landslide victory in his favour on Blitz makes it appear as though he’s ready for Round Two against the Gatekeeper of New Talent, so exactly that will occur, Michael receiving a chance at redemption against the stable which has his number! In Peak Performance’s case, shutting down the Junior Revolution before it can fully take off its feet would be in his best interest, nothing sweeter than bragging about single-handedly being the cause of death of another competitor’s potential, Steel keeping his territory on lock from newcomers! Prompt: Book Clash at the Castle II (Max 1000 Words) Simon Brown vs Kentaro Sakamoto vs Travis Broski Tournaments have oft been a means of elevating competitors closer to the brass ring, the gruelling schedules showing their true inner resilience and ability to maintain their skill even into the later rounds. For all three of these men, that statement couldn’t be truer. Exhibit A: Simon Brown. Though his FBE tenure was brief, he smashed through the glass ceiling in a manner many are unable to, a run into the Semi Finals of the inaugural Gedo Classic being promptly followed up by him becoming the second-ever Junior Heavyweight Champion in just a month or so of joining FBE, putting himself on a list that’s spawned some of the biggest stars of the current era. Exhibit B: Kentaro Sakamoto. Going from the third member of Semper Lucet to forever remembered for his performance in the inaugural Punish & Crush Tournament, his advancement to the Finals over championship competition made it clear as day what he could offer at his best, becoming a staple Heavyweight ever since, sharing iconic moments alongside PROSPECT. Exhibit C: Travis Broski. Much like The Immortalizer, he too was launched into the next stratosphere with an inspiring Gedo Classic Semis campaign in its most recent edition, the Undercity Underdog going on to upset some of the most valued juggernauts in company history in its aftermath, now continuing to remain a threat to the top of the pecking order. All three feasibly able to take on the entire world if they so please (and all Ape guys?), they’re going to have to confront their most unique challenge yet in shattering mirrors of themselves! Prompt: Book GUNTHER until WrestleMania 40 (Max 1000 Words) Unadulterated Quarter James Scott vs Jason Beggs When you look at the career James Scott has had, it’s hard not to envy the Purest Protagonist for his many accolades. Intercontinental Champion, the original Junior Champion Ace, inaugural Lifeline Classic Winner over Hall of Fame level competition, New Beginning III main eventer, he’s been around the block and then some. Inventing the model for what a newcomer to the company should resemble if they wish to be remembered, fearlessly running with the giants like he’s David, he’s surely inspired a generation, but what about those from his generation? When one man dominates the rest, there’s to be casualties along the way, Jason Beggs being one of those who suffered from Scott’s meteoric rise, his name being forgotten in favour of the Aussie, despite Jason beating him in Scott’s multi-man debut. With three years passing since both first broke into the company, they find themselves in the same division again, making it only inevitable that their paths would cross again on the hunt for the Pure Title. So, why not now? Becoming Irresistible since his return, for Beggs this is the perfect opportunity at revenge by tossing James down the mountain this time in a Lion King moment, but as always, it’s Scott vs The World and he won’t be rolling over for anyone! Prompt: Book the revival of Pete Dunne (Max 1000 Words) Battle of the Best II: DTJ (Misery, Hunter Maguire, Joshua Epps) vs PROVINCE (Sebastian King, Erick Koeman, Karma) vs The RISE (Ripley, John LaGuardia, Victor Williams) On 1000 days of FBE, three of the most iconic stables in the company’s history butted heads, British Ambition, Lifeline, and PRIDE Gang squaring off in the inaugural Battle of the Best, that match putting a bow to the end of those 9 men’s generation, a more modern school of FBE competition ensuing in its aftermath which blended two very different eras together. Of the new crop, three factions have been inseparable over the past year in every form they’ve come to pass, Death to Juniors, PROVINCE, and The RISE all being tied at the hip. WarGames earlier this year seeing The RISE’s predecessor, J.E.M, defeat DTJ, and PROVINCE subsequently debuting at DTJ’s expense, the critically acclaimed group has taken enough from both squadrons, finally getting a chance to exact their revenge on both in one fell swoop! PROVINCE and The RISE aren’t without their own issues either, the Shining Light League sparking friction between them in block matches, all 3 factions trading victories over the course of the competition, DTJ and The RISE even putting representatives through to the Semi Finals whilst PROVINCE costed the remainder of their men from moving on. In a race to prove themselves the next big things of the company, one faction will walk out here with a trophy to their name and a score at last settled! Prompt: Book Ilja Dragunov on the Main Roster (Max 1 Part Per Person; 1000 Words each) EED vs JOHN Whilst FBE’s been a breeding ground for a wide range of colourful personalities, there’s been few that’ve acted as ‘anti-personalities’, deviating from the supernatural world to crack down on those they’ve felt to be caricatures of what a true wrestler should be. The most shining example of all in the Wild West was EED, standing out against the variety pack roster with his scathing, no-nonsense attitude, drilling a hole in the skull of anyone, both on the mic and in the ring, who he deemed unbecoming to the sport which paid his bills and subsequently having his way with their tattered remains. Though no one has since quite managed to capture the aura of the Notorious, few might’ve argued JOHN to be his successor. All caps, plain and simple, the Misfit’s been unlike his exotic peers, simply a freak of nature uprooting anything in his path. A career marked by gold much like the former Television and Commonwealth Champion, JOHN with his own record-breaking Junior Heavyweight Championship reign, tonight he gets a chance to step to an OG as one of these two prove themselves to be the undisputed real man’s man of FBE! Prompt: Book Drew McIntyre’s Return (Max 1000 Words) Nate Matthews vs T.M Imran Before T.M Imran was an official member of the FBE roster, he was one of the guinea pigs of the Trials system, and though he managed to win over majority of his examiners, there was but one he simply couldn’t crack – Nate Matthews. A Living Legend by this company’s standards and understandably one of the toughest to impress given his unmatched laundry list of accomplishments, from his many firsts like walking in as World Champion into the first BTE’s main event or being the first Grand Slam Winner, 8 championship reigns to his name, to being the Ace at one point, it would take a hell of a lot more to catch his attention. In the wrestling business they say ‘to be the man you have to beat the man’, so what better way to gain the respect of the OG than through wrestling him? Nate competing in the first-ever Pure Rules match in company history, defeating him in a category his name’s been forever tied to would certainly give the Fifth Asian Tiger’s career its defining moment after two Television Championship reigns that put him on the map, the two Heyman Classic entrants to get warmed up here ahead of a bid to make BTE’s main event this year! Prompt: TBD Regal Quarter Bong vs Bengt Holm The crossover appeal of FBE has brought in a myriad of names over the years from all walks of life, but above all perhaps the most influential is Bong. A staunch anti-racism campaigner from the world of LLR, he’s considered royalty in his home promotion, a G1 Climax Winner among other lauded accomplishments living the unemployed life of raising two families yet still sparing the time to whoop anyone who gives him grief. He’s Scottish, he’s unhinged, and he’ll rawdog you back to wherever you came from, no expenses paid. If you hold a popularity contest, Bong would take the crown, but someone who’s rapidly been gaining recognition since joining in the last couple months is the one they call KillKill, Bengt Holm accruing quite the name on both Firestorm and Blitz, most recently putting up a valiant effort against the Junior Champion. With Kojot in his ear and a Bong-like affinity to deal with his problems using his fists, this Thai-tanic could be the one they warn the icebergs about, the unsinkable Bengt headed to the helm of his division if he can outshine the sheer star power of his adversary here! Prompt: Book the push of Maximum Male Models (Max 1000 Words) Code Blue vs Jay Castle III Resistance III was supposed to be the greatest night of Code Blue’s life until it wasn’t. Mugged by The Aether Aces before the match could even begin and having his eye stabbed by their latest recruit, former PROSPECT member Jay Castle, he was taken out of commission that night, though it had him return even more driven, and this time with a vengeance. The issues between these two extend long before that night however, butting heads all the way back in the main event of Blitz III one year ago, where the Hometown Hero narrowly upset the now shared longest reigning champion in FBE history. Proceeding to cross paths again as part of the famed Ark/PROSPECT rivalry, Blue getting his win back in an Intercontinental Championship Eliminator that kickstarted his recent meteoric rise, they’ve never been ones to see eye to eye, and especially after what Jay did to Blue, the chance of it ever happening is dead in the water. They say an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but that’s the least of the Pasadena Paralyser’s concerns, not letting Castle slip by him this time as he hunts down his rival only days removed from his first-ever singles World Heavyweight Championship match, fatigued yet with the drive of an army of 1000 men to strike down with furious anger to settle their score once and for all! Prompt: Book a Nigel McGuinness Return Run (Max 1000 Words) Atlas Rogue vs Ethan Fadely VII When it comes to utterly personal rivalries, Atlas Rogue and Ethan Fadely’s is very much up there. Stretching all the way back to 2020, when Sol Ace took the Son of the Roses’ World Heavyweight Championship, a mutual hatred was sparked between the polar opposites, Fadely eventually having his revenge in his unstoppable 2022 return, taking Rogue to mercy at New Beginning IV. After a bloody WarGames between Infinite POWER and REVOLT, the two met again late last year, trading victories, Atlas besting Fadely at his own game, and Ethan getting the Godfather of Pure Rules back under his district. Once Ethan formed The Aether Aces with Atlas’s former partner, the siren began to sing her song, luring the two to one more match, one year on from their previous NB encounter. And once again, it was Fadely callousing his foe, leaving him with horrific injuries to tie up their saga 3-3. 3 months have passed since and Rogue hasn’t been able to forget, the scars he sees in the mirror each morning reminding him of what must be done. Now, fully healed up, King Blitz is back for one final dance with his career rival to break the tie between them, adamant to round out his incredible Pure Rules run by beating the one that got away! In Ethan’s case however, it’s all about ending Atlas for good this time, the Portlander wanting to add to The Aether Aces stretch of top-billing stars they’ve buried in a ditch, a tiebreaking victory the most crucial one available! Will Atlas start the Summer with a dead rose, or can Ethan crush the King’s crown under his boot? Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s the Final Rodeo between Rogue and Fadely! Prompt: Book Forbidden Door II (Max 1000 Words) Excellence Quarter British Rounds: Desmond Caid vs Capital STEEZ VIII Unlike the consistent hatred brimming between the last two, the saga between Desmond Caid and Capital STEEZ has followed a rather different trajectory. Though seesawing between mutual loathing and respect, at the centre of it all has always lain a consistent power struggle between two of the elite in their quests to prove themselves the undisputed best. Starting with the opener of the first-ever Carnage Tour – which has gone on to become a tradition between the two – their story has served as a timeline of King Capital’s growing stardom against the first Ace of FBE. The first year resulting in constant failures for STEEZ, from Carnage to an Intercontinental Championship match to WarGames to the Heyman Classic to BTE II’s main event, the winds of change finally blew in his direction come 2021, Steelo scoring his first win over the Maestro in the Lifeline Classic. Marking the start of STEEZ’s rise into the Ace spot once occupied by Caid, the narrative began to shift in his favour, coming back from a 4-0 deficit to best him each subsequent year at Carnage, with tag team victories in the Battle of the Best and Three Stages of Hell along the way, this year putting him up to 4-3. Now, they’re set to meet yet again as STEEZ receives his chance to tie up the saga, whilst Desmond looks to break his dry spell against his iconic foe. What makes this match so unique compared to the rest however is the stipulation in place. Always known for their lengthy classics against each other, for the very first time they’re going to meet under an entirely different ruleset, the British Rounds system testing their ability to work a much, much quicker pace! Caid on home turf much like he was back at Unbreakable II, if there’s anytime to cut STEEZ off, it’s here, whilst for the Bossman, writing over the crushing memories of London would be in his best interest in finally cementing himself as having Desmond’s number! Prompt: Book Hideo Itami if he skipped NXT and went directly to the Main Roster (Max 3 Parts; 1000 Words each) Non-Title: FBE World Heavyweight Champion Inferno vs Petite Jupiter III After years of grinding yet being forced to settle for second best, 2023 has undisputedly been Inferno’s year, ruling the roost with an iron fist from the jump, a Booker in the Bank cash-in mere weeks in making him Double Champion alongside his X Division (Pure) Championship reign. Embarking on a murderous run with the support of The Aether Aces, he’s crushed old and new faces alike week after week in everything from a draining 90-Minute Iron Man match to a thrilling British Rounds showdown to an emotional Title vs Career classic, diving further and further past the point of no return with his bastardly streak. Sitting atop the Pure ruleset with the most matches and wins in history, using it as a means to stomp out fledgling talent and address unfinished business, it seems as though there’s no one who can stop Baba Blitz. …That is, no one that’d been currently active. Making a bombshell return after over a year of being sidelined with injury, appearing on Blitz’s one-year anniversary to present the trophy to the Shining Light League Winner, a tournament named in his honour, Petite Jupiter whipped Buckingham Palace into a frenzy with his appearance, London giving him the perfect homecoming. One of only 2 people the Aether Ace has never beaten in his career, Inferno was quick to interrupt his British Ambition brother, though seeming more like strangers with how much has changed between them since their last meeting. Goading him into one more match by pushing his buttons like the master manipulator he’s proven to be, citing the Shining Light’s lack of victories over reigning World Champions despite his Hall of Fame career, the ever-valiant PJ accepted, setting the stage for a long-awaited blockbuster end to their trilogy! No shortage of Pure Rules experience himself, PJ the Grandfather to Blitz if Inferno’s its Baba, he holds a win over the Brummie Bastard under the ruleset, having faced off under it at the first FBE Anniversary Show after a despaired Inferno had turned his back on his brothers, feeling abandoned by them in his time of need, PJ subsequently bringing him back to the light. Later also sullying Inferno’s first BITB cash-in, which he’s since perfected, keeping his prized Intercontinental Championship from him, he’s held his former World Tag Team Championship partner’s number for the past 3 years, but now, it remains to be seen if the story will be any different, the two Britons colliding one final time in their home country as all their experiences craft the perfect closing chapter to their tale! Prompt: Book a main event push for PAC (Max 1000 Words) FBE Pure Championship: Shining Light League Winner FBE World Tag Team Champion Dr. Logan Wright (c) vs Apeirogone 3rd Defence The term ‘Final Boss’ isn’t thrown about lightly. Throughout FBE history, only one man’s been truly synonymous with the term. They say it’s anyone’s season until this man comes around. They claim he’s the type of guy to fly down to Hell and come back with gift shop souvenirs. World Championships, two-hour Gauntlets, Three Stages of Hell, he’s been there and won them all. Wins over damn near every single person that’s come to matter throughout the company’s history, he’s that guy. Legendary factions, shows named after him, an entire cult of personality backing him as the company’s Commissioner, what more could you want out of a person’s resume? Well, it’s not about what the people want, or what he himself wants, but rather, what another man yearns for. The chance to immortalise his name into wrestling history. The chance to join only four others in their abilities to beat this man. The chance to cement themselves as a Final Boss forever. Dr. Logan Wright, reigning two-time FBE Pure Champion off the back of being one of only two to pin the current World Champion this year, reigning FBE World Tag Team Champion via ending the longest championship reign of any title in company history after winning 2023’s Punish & Crush, inaugural Shining Light League Winner by sweeping through 6 matches front-to-back, and the man that will carry his title into the first-ever BTE-equivalent Blitz show, P.U.R.E, has selected none other than Apeirogone to be the third challenger to his Pure Title! For months, the Medicinal Magician has silently watched as people have lauded the accomplishments of his Ark brethren against the Infinity Ace. Cactus Mike almost taking the man to a draw. Code Blue ending his 1347-day undefeated singles streak. Kaze Tanaka sending him into retirement. But what about him? What about the final member of The Ark? What about the licensed medical practitioner that’s on the best run of his entire life despite the constant demons rattling around inside his brain? They’ve all had their chance, so why can’t he? Forced to wrestled with the “can never beat a veteran legend” stigma for years, he’s decided to put down his stethoscope and declare no longer! Even after there’s no reading on his ECG and 0 of his 206 bones have been reduced to dust, he wants to the world to remember his name! So, it begs the question – What happens when one of the greatest of all-time steps outside his comfort zone and into the kingdom of another man to fight for only one of two championships he doesn’t have hung up on his wall? Will Apeirogone avenge his previous losses to The Ark by taking away the prize that breathed life back into the soul of the Doctor in his first-ever BTE-style main event? Or will Logan Wright silence the critics until the end of time, keeping his undefeated streak extending back to January, keeping his unbeaten Blitz Big 4 streak, and keeping his Pure Championship by felling a legend? It’s the Final Boss of Blitz versus the Final Boss of FB to close out P.U.R.E! Prompt: Book Kenny Omega until Double or Nothing 2024 (Max 1000 Words) All bookings are due on June 3rd at 11PM EST, so don’t delay on those. Fourteen star-studded matches on the card featuring 39 unique competitors – the most there’s ever been on any FBE show in history – let’s make this a memorable first P.U.R.E, lads! 2023.05.29 00:52 Pretty-Mycologist268 Thoughts from a CS student
With more and more people vying for a spot in a CS course, I thought I'll share my thoughts on opportunities a degree in CS would open up and the reality of these jobs.
For some context, I have interned at FAANG as an SWE, a trading firm as an SWE and another trading firm as a trader. While this allows me to compare and contrast my experiences, keep in mind that experiences are often team dependent so I shall focus on things that apply at a company level. I'm sure there are many of you who dream of landing a job at the likes of Google or Jane Street - I have been in your shoes too and hopefully I can help you figure out whether these jobs are what you really want.
Doors a CS degree would open A CS degree is extremely flexible. You will have the math and programming foundations for jobs like: software engineer, machine learning engineer, product manager, quant trader, quant researcher, data analyst, data engineer and any more. While these seem like vastly different titles, a CS degree will equip you with the foundational programming skills and more importantly, the ability to solve problems independently. A lot of the learning happens on the job, which means you shouldn't rule out applying for something just because you don't fully satisfy the job descriptions - most people don't anyway.
I feel like the go-to job for CS grads is software engineering, but designing new features and doing code reviews all day is not for everyone. CS is also a very broad field with subfields like AI, ML, NLP, systems, graphics, algorithms, software engineering. Take the time to look into areas you might be interested, and use internships to explore different areas to get a feel of what you like the most.
Tech vs Finance These are probably the 2 most common industries CS grads end up in, so I thought I should comment a bit about their similarities and differences.
Similarities - There is no shortage of smart people in either industry
- Both are pretty results-driven
- Both industries pay quite well, and can have good benefits
Differences - Tech is more laid back, finance moves faster. I was coming into office anywhere between 9-10am in tech with option to WFH, in finance it was more like 8am with no option to WFH
- Some roles are limited to tech - UX designers, product managers. Some roles are limited to finance - quant traders and researchers
Expectations vs Reality Unsurprisingly, many people aim to land jobs at FAANG companies and trading firms because of their eye-popping pay, crazy benefits, and the prestige associated with working at these places. Everyone has different things they look for in a job, so you should tailor your search to suit your goals. That being said, I will weigh in with my thoughts having worked at a few of these firms.
I'll start off with the premise that if these companies could pay you any lesser to do your job, they would. Lower employee cost => More profits for shareholders => Attract more investment => Company grows. There are 2 main reasons why they are not offering you lower than they are.
- Competitors: if Company A offers you 5,000/month while Company B offers you 7,000/month and all else is equal, everyone would leave A to join B. We saw this when trading firm intern offers topped off at 96/hr in 2022, but Optiver raised to 112/hr in 2023. Citadel quickly followed with 120/hr and Jane Street called up interns to raise their offer to 120/hr
- Work that is expected of you: if a trading firm offered the same salary as a tech firm, nobody would join the trading firm. Trading firms offer more because more is expected of you - just because you cleared the interview doesn't mean that you're getting twice the salary for the same amount of work
With that in mind, hopefully you can start to see how not everything is captured in the number that is your total compensation. There is a big element of the fight for talent and work expected that goes into it.
Another thing that isn't captured by numbers is job risk. Nobody told Meta and Amazon engineers in their contracts about the possibility of being laid off, yet it happened. Tech firms are barely hiring in an economic climate where recession is a possibility, and I'm sure there are many non-FAANG companies that looked to cut costs in other areas instead of having a knee-jerk reaction and laying off 11% of the company at short notice.
Trading firms are also notorious for cutting under-performers, even more so for front office roles like quant traders. Jane Street has a roughly 50% conversion rate for trading interns, and when you see the profiles of some of these trading interns - IMO medallists, ICPC world finalists, attending top universities like Harvard and MIT, you can probably imagine how much effort you might need to put in to keep up. Just to give an example of what my schedule looked like as a trading intern: I would wake up at 7am, get to office by 8am, trade all the way from 8.30am to 5.30pm, and clear up admin tasks until 6.30pm, getting home at around 7.30pm. After dinner and shower it's already 8.30pm and I hit the bed by 10pm.
Not saying this schedule is something people cannot cope with, but this life is not for everyone. It requires a lot of discipline, not to mention being focused at work so you don't lose 10k in a matter of minutes by making the wrong trades. I'm fortunate that this is something that I find pretty fun which keeps me going, but staring at an ever changing wall of numbers for 8 hours a day is not everyone's cup of tea.
Another shallow reason to factor into where you want to work is company prestige. FAANG and trading firms are hyped up a lot in schools and on these forums, with people dreaming about getting an offer from Hudson River Trading or Apple. Even as someone who values prestige, I can tell you it fades away pretty quick when you're dragging yourself out of bed at 7am and you're given what will likely take a year as a 3-month intern project. Sure, it feels good to have an offer from these companies and put in on your CV, but please look beyond the brand name and consider things like company culture too. I know way too many people who have joined Citadel, gotten free IPads and private jet flights for an offsite event, just to work 70 hour weeks and hate themselves afterwards.
These are some things I have come to value through my internships that you can consider too:
- Good mentorship: The difference in having a managementor who cares about you is massive. I've been fortunate enough to get mentors who were willing to get on a 4 hour call with me to debug my code, advocate for me during reviews with my manager. Some firms have a strong mentorship culture like Google (each intern has a host) and Amazon (each intern is assigned a mentor), but there are many other companies that do as well
- Exploring other areas: I also used to be under the impression that studying CS is simply preparing to be a software engineer. That is most definitely not true, and I'm glad I got to try out trading during an internship
- Culture: Again, this is usually quite team dependent, and you don't always have control over what team you get placed on. However, some firms are known for having a more laid-back culture like Google, a more intense culture like Optiver, or a more elitist culture like Jump Trading (barely takes any new grads). You can probably use this and your personality to decide where you would be a good fit at
These are the key points that I felt should be touched on, but feel free to ask about others!

2023.05.29 00:37 JoshAsdvgi Traditional Talking Stick
| Traditional Talking Stick Traditional Talking Stick The Talking Stick is a tool used in many Native American Traditions when a council is called. It allows all council members to present their Sacred Point of View. The Talking Stick is passed from person to person as they speak and only the person holding the stick is allowed to talk during that time period. The Answering Feather is also held by the person speaking unless the speaker address a question to another council member. At that time, the Answering Feather is passed to the person asked to answer the query. Every member of the meeting must listen closely to the words being spoken, so when their turn comes, they do not repeat unneeded information or ask impertinent, questions. Indian children are taught to listen from age three forward; they are also taught to respect another's viewpoint. This is not to say that they may not disagree, but rather they are bound by their personal honor to allow everyone their Sacred Point of View. People responsible for holding any type council meeting are required to make their own Talking Stick. The Talking Stick may be used when they teach children, hold council, make decisions regarding disputes, hold Pow-Wow gatherings, have storytelling circles, or conduct a ceremony where more then one person will speak. Since each piece of material used in the Talking Stick speaks of the personal Medicine of the stick owner, each Talking Stick will be different. The Qualities of each type of Standing Person (Tree) brings specific Medicine. White Pine is the Peace Tree, Birch symbolizes truth, Evergreens represent the continued growth of all things. Cedar symbolizes cleansing. Aspen is the symbol for seeing clearly since there are many eye shapes on the truth. Maple represents gentleness. Elm is used for wisdom; Mountain Ash for protection; Oak for strength; Cherry for expression, high emotion, or love. Fruit woods are for abundance and walnut or pecan for gathering of energy or beginning new projects. Each person making a Talking Stick must decide which type of Standing Person (Tree) will assist their needs and add needed medicine to the Councils held. The ornamentation of each stick all have meaning. In the Lakotah Tradition, red is for life, yellow is for knowledge, blue is for prayer and wisdom, white is for spirit, purple is for healing, orange is for feeling kinship with all living things, black is for clarity and focus. The type of feathers and hide used on a Talking Stick are very important as well. The Answering Feather is usually an Eagle Feather, which represents high ideals, truth as viewed from the expansive eye of the eagle, and the freedom that comes from speaking total truth to the best of one's ability. The Answering Feather can also be the feather of a Turkey, the Peace Eagle of the south, which brings peaceful attitudes as well as the give and take necessary in successful completion of disputes. In the Tribe that see Owl as good Medicine, the Owl feather may also be used to stop deception from entering the Sacred Space of the Council. The skins, hair or hides used in making a Talking Stick brings the abilities, talents, gifts and medicine of those creatures-beings to council in a variety of ways. Buffalo brings abundance; Elk brings physical fitness and stamina; deer brings gentleness; rabbit brings the ability to listen with big ears; the hair from a horse's tail or mane brings perseverance and adds connection to the earth and to the spirits of the wind. If an illness of heart, mind, spirit, or body has affected the group gathering, snake skin may be wrapped around the Talking Stick so that healing and transmuting of those poisons can occur. The Talking Stick is the tool that teaches each of us to honor the Sacred Point of View of every living creature. Not only Talking Sticks were used, more objects were used such as: A Talking Feather, Talking Stone, Talking Skin, Talking Shell, were also used. » When to use the talking stone? Anytime it is needed to help the listening, and at the start and end of a circle session when we are gathered together at the beginning of a circle activity or closing it. » Another cool use of the stone in your daily life… it can offer an external support in a difficult communication situation. For instance, it can be used as an external reminder to keep your cool, stay composed, etc. In that sense, in the moment you need it, the talking stone is talking to you. It is whispering to you to keep cool, or to not worry… The Talking stick, used in many Indigenous cultures, is an ancient and powerful “communication tool” that ensures a code of conduct of respect during meetings is followed. The person holding the stick, and only that person, is designated as having the right to speak and all others must listen quietly and respectfully. Talking sticks are most frequently used in council circles, ceremonies and at the beginning of cultural events such as potlatches, and in storytelling circles. Some cultures do not use a Talking Stick per se but use an eagle feather, wampum belt, peace pipe or sacred shell. A great many schools have adopted the Talking Stick principles in their classrooms as a way to teach children patience, self-discipline and to respect the speaker and his/her words. The added bonus is the children additionally are learning about First Nation culture in a tangible way. In terms of First Nation Talking Stick protocols, it is important to remember that each First Nation is unique in their culture, traditions and history so will have their own protocols. In this article we are speaking of general protocols. If you invited to attend a meeting that involves a Talking Stick, either ask about protocol in advance and/or follow the lead of others. Here are some basic rules that if you follow you won’t go far wrong: If an Elder is present, they speak first All in attendance are expected to listen Listen with respect, support, compassion and quietness Listen carefully - do not repeat information that has already been shared Allow ample time before your next appointment - do not check your watch Turn off your phone Interrupting is not allowed When the Elder, or whomever, is holding the talking stick has finished speaking, the stick is handed to the next person in the circle If the receiver does not wish to speak, it is passed to the next person If you are handed the Talking Stick and wish to speak, introduce yourself first When everyone who wishes to speak has spoken, the Talking Stick is handed back to the Elder for safekeeping Consider bringing a gift of tobacco for any Elders who may be in attendance Talking Sticks can be elaborately carved, brightly painted, unpainted, adorned with symbolic items such as fur, leather, feathers or unadorned and simple - the wood, the figures, the colours and the adornments all carry meaning but more on symbolism . Kinda makes one wish our politicians used the Talking Stick and time honoured protocols to guide their meetings. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 00:35 Cornconic Please read this. I'm all out of options and I desperately need your help.
To whom it may concern: this message is of the utmost importance. Please do not disregard it. I don’t know for sure what website you’ll be seeing this on, whoever you are. Probably something submission-based, hopefully one where it stays up. Regardless, it is imperative that you keep reading. I’ll explain why soon, but before I do, some context is in order.
My brother was a brilliant man. Brilliantly talented, brilliantly clever. It was difficult growing up in his shadow. We were raised in the same nurturing, middle-upper class environment, with two loving parents that encouraged us at every turn, but it seemed there was nothing I could do that he wouldn’t outshine me at. He was no savant, you see. Julian held his own in any situation, whether that be an exam or a party with friends. Hardly ever was he not the smartest person in the room, or the most popular.
Needless to say, I was a jealous sibling. My main source of bother was academic performance. I’m not an idiot, even in comparison to my brother, but I was an underachiever for a long period of my adolescence. I’m not sure what I’d attribute it to. Hanging around the wrong people, perhaps, having my head in the clouds, something like that. I’ve always been intelligent, but for a while I really struggled to knuckle down and
use that intellect. For so long, I heard the same tired expression:
“if you’d only apply yourself…” I’m sure some of you reading this can relate. It wasn’t until many years later that that sentiment really rang true.
I never outright hated Julian, but I have to admit there was invariably a growing seed of resentment in my heart for him, especially as we got older and his natural aptitude really began to shine. We both had an interest in computer science from a young age, most likely inherited from our father, who worked for Microsoft before they went out of business. I still remember those nights as kids when he’d sit us down in front of his computer and show us all the little intricacies of the code he was working on. Any other children our age would be bored out of their skulls, but there we sat, attentive as ever, our developing minds fascinated by the job’s seemingly endless possibilities. Julian’s other main curiosity, which I did not share, was an affinity towards online horror fiction, though he grew out of that kind of stuff in his late teens.
He knew I had a chip on my shoulder. Mostly, he was apathetic towards it; we were never estranged, but he wasn’t going to let my discontent get in the way of his success. Though I don’t blame him, I suppose that was always Julian’s downfall. He was just too headstrong, too confident.
When we became adults, we parted ways. He went on to study at Harvard while I ended up dropping out of some bang-average local university you won’t have heard of. Following that, things were a little rough. My parents were fairly disappointed. They didn’t cut me off, rather, interacting with them became a depressing chore as they waited for their son to get his life together. At family gatherings, I gritted my teeth at the stories Julian told: developing virtual reality hardware, cutting-edge stuff, pushing the boundaries of the way we interact with technology, all while I was couch-surfing, barely making ends meet as the IT guy at a shitty school in a town I hated. It only made the prospect of snapping out of whatever haze I was in feel more difficult.
It all changed one day soon after I got my first apartment. Julian showed up out of the blue on a dewy morning with an armful of equipment and a huge, beaming smile on his face. I let him in, we talked, and he promised that what he was going to show me would completely blow my mind.
I watched as he paced about my living room setting up all his gadgetry. As soon as everything was ready, he switched on my computer and handed me a thin, plastic headset with exposed wires. Two nodes hung from either side of the thing, which fitted snugly over my temples. While I sat back on the sofa and stared at the monitor before me, he gave me one simple instruction.
“Type something into Google.”
“But I don’t have a keyboard.”
“You don’t need one.”
According to Julian’s wishes, I simply thought about the action, and it happened. The word “something” came up in the search box, and my jaw dropped open in shock. At first, I thought the obvious, that my brother was purposefully fooling me with some kind of prank or gimmick, but repeated tests all came up with the same result. And it wasn’t just searching I could do telepathically, but
anything. Literally anything I could think of, limited to the capabilities of the computer, of course. I had total control. There was even a sort of projection in my mind’s eye as it was happening, like the process was actually occurring inside my brain. It wasn’t perfect, but it was nothing short of amazing.
“You’re one of the first people to try it,” he told me once I’d tested everything out. “We’re calling it NeuroWorks, or something to that effect.”
I don’t think that feeling of astonishment ever truly left me. It was then that I realised my petty indignation, the dissatisfaction I felt after so many years of being outclassed, meant nothing in the face of my brother’s achievements, and I would be doing the world a disservice by failing to assist him. Julian departed that night after some drinks and a few laughs, and the next day, I enrolled once again for a degree in computer science. Four years later, I passed with flying colours, and Julian hired me to work for him at his company. There may have been a bit of nepotism involved, but that’s neither here nor there.
The next few years were dizzying. During the time in which I was getting (re)educated, Julian had been working with a team of elite neuroscientists, specialists that filled in the gaps in his knowledge, did all the things he couldn’t. Immediately, I felt I was in way over my head, but as my learning advanced, I gradually got up to speed, and my mood improved quite rapidly. That feeling of pride, like I was finally doing something productive with my life, was nothing short of fantastic, especially in the face of so many wasted years. I was never quite on Julian’s level, of course, but with enough time, I grew to be a valued contributor to the NeuroWorks project. Off the back of a long period of arduous work, the device fully came to fruition, culminating in an international commercial release.
It was a global success, and we made a fortune. Once we’d fully optimised it, it ended up being surprisingly cheap to produce and implement. The result was its adoption in billions of households and businesses. As expected, it completely changed the way we live and work in the virtual world. Worldwide productivity and efficiency increased tenfold. Even now, I’m typing this message with those same two nodes attached at either side of my head, hands-free. As cliched as it sounds, at that point, it truly felt like we were living in the future.
Honestly, I would’ve been happy to stop there. I could’ve moved somewhere green and sunny, spent the rest of my days doing TED Talks and sipping cocktails on the balcony of a villa, not giving a single damn. But not Julian. Like always, Julian had his eyes set on further horizons, on the subsequent stretch of progress. No sooner than a few months after NeuroWorks was released did he come up with his next magnificent idea.
“Consciousness splicing.”
That was how he described it on the day he first sat me down to try and explain. We were outside a café, some pretentious, gentrified establishment in the heart of London, with a coffee each.
“The next stage of human learning, or maybe even existence as a whole. NeuroWorks, compared to this…it’s just a stepping stone, Alex,” he told me. “If we get this right, we won’t just be able to use computers with our minds, we’ll be able to
think like them, too.”
I struggled to wrap my head around the concept. “How do you mean, exactly?” I replied.
“Take what makes us sentient. Our minds, our passion, our free will. Everything a machine lacks. How can it be improved? How can it be bettered? What we lack naturally, we as a species, I mean, can be found in a computer. The processing power, the boundless memory, the objectivity. Not to mention the ability to conjure up any kind of information on a whim, the entire collective library of human knowledge, dating back thousands of years. But there are limitations. Computers can’t truly think for themselves. Not yet, anyway. They require input, direction. If we can intersect the strengths of man and machine, cross the gap that separates us…”
He was stirring his drink all the while. Julian had a thing about that: he could never look at you directly when he was thinking, like the image of your baffled face would put him off somehow.
“Okay, but you’re talking purely in theoretical terms, right? We’re centuries off reaching that point. I mean, creating a neural link between a person and Mac OS is one thing-
“I think it’s possible.”
A beat passed before he sighed, grabbed a napkin, and produced a pen from his pocket. I waited as he sketched out a crude, yet complicated diagram. I can’t recall it exactly – it was something to do with the relationship between time, space, and information. Far more philosophical than scientific, I remember thinking.
“The internet is a powerful beast. Our means of controlling it, of accessing it, even with NeuroWorks, are subpar. We just need another breakthrough, and then that could open the door for who knows what else. Traversing through decades online, going back and forth whenever we want-
“Easier said than done.”
“But it could be possible. It could.”
“I disagree. Not in our lifetimes, anyway. And even if it is, it sounds…dangerous. Very dangerous. The number of things that could go wrong, the variables…it doesn’t bear thinking about. We don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. Let’s learn to walk before we run, eh?”
He was quiet after that. The conversation stuck with me for the next couple of years. We were working mostly on maintaining NeuroWorks at that time, delivering a steady stream of updates and enhancements as society began to mold itself around its advent. There was some discussion as to when the next big leap forward would be, the next huge announcement from Julian’s company, but he remained tight-lipped about anything regarding that.
It was then that he started acting…weird. I saw him less and less in what was supposed to be our spare time together. The cancelled reservations and missed family events added up, but whenever I asked him about it, he just shrugged it off. “I’m a workaholic,” he would say. “You know you all mean the world to me, but so does this job.” I tried to comfort myself with that, but deep down, I think I knew he was hiding something. Something he thought would worry me, that was outside my area of expertise. I was going to confront him about it eventually. I just ended up waiting too long.
One night, he rang me out of nowhere. I remember shooting straight up into a sitting position in a pitch-black room – I think I’d been having a nightmare. The metallic surface of my phone was cold and smooth in my sweaty palm as I picked up the call and pressed it to my temple.
“Meet me at this address in half an hour. And be quick.”
I spoke a word or two in return, but the call had already ended. There was a soft blip, and some postcode I didn’t recognise appeared at the top of the screen.
Doing exactly as my brother asked, I got up, got changed, and made the 20-minute journey by car.
The place was a run-down warehouse in one of the rougher areas of town, where property prices were at their cheapest. I parked up and stepped outside, shivering as I cursed myself for not having the foresight to bring a thicker jacket. It wasn’t immediately obvious which building I was looking for, until I saw a flash of light through a broken window in the distance. Cautiously, I approached it, glancing around to assure myself I wasn’t walking into a trap, as stupid as that thought was. The main door being completely boarded up meant an obscured gap in the brickwork was my entry point.
Dodging the tiny droplets of water trickling in from the broken ceiling, I rounded a corner. The main, spacious area of the warehouse had been kitted out as a kind of makeshift workshop, near identical to a setup from NeuroWorks. It was as if someone had carved out one of our labs and dumped it here, beside walls of crumbling paint. My brow was furrowed as I stared from a distance at the scurrying scientists, who flicked me awkward looks as they went about tending to a central apparatus. I recognised a few of them, but they paid me little mind. I’m sure they knew I was coming.
It took me a few moments to realise, but
Julian was part of the almighty cluster of machinery in the middle of it all. His body was a biological cog in an otherwise artificial setup; he was on his back, head tilted slightly forwards, arms splayed in a t-pose like he was being crucified. I’ll never get that image out of my head: him lying there, not having quite noticed me yet, sweat upon his brow. He was shirtless, too, wires running up and down his arms and a mesh inserted atop his shaved head, which was next to a monitor. The wires came down in gangly clumps off the side of the ‘bed’ he was on and fed into this gargantuan hunk of steel by his side. It was truly massive, topped with blinking lights and seemingly missing its outer casing. If I didn’t know better, I’d have assumed he’d been kidnapped and experimented on.
He looked at me, directly upwards from his perspective, and said, “You’re late,” through a smile.
I wasn’t smiling. “Julian, what the fuck is all of this?”
“I apologise for not telling you sooner. Truth be told, I didn’t want you to worry. But this is too important for you not to see.”
I was at a loss for words.
“What we’re going to do here, today, right now, will change the course of humanity. And you need to be here to witness it. So get ready.
We’re starting!”
He shouted that last sentence, and all the scientists in the room shuffled to what could only be described as their ‘posts’. I merely watched as they started a countdown sequence of sorts, dutifully coordinating the machine through a large control panel. They communicated with short, snappy gestures and mumbled technobabble that I could barely pay attention to. Instinctively, I stepped back until I was at an arbitrarily ‘safe’ distance.
Seconds later, my mouth turned dry and a quiet ringing in my ears began to form. I chalked it up to nerves initially, but it soon became apparent there was some kind of static in the air, palpable interference that manifested in a painful shock as my hand grazed the shiny edge of a worksurface. It seemed to be emanating from the middle of the room, where Julian was. His eyes were closed now, tightly; he gave the impression of someone concentrating very intently on something.
There was a hum, so low you almost felt it before you heard it, slowly increasing in pitch. I suddenly had a headache, and I’m almost certain my hair was standing up under the confines of my flat cap. Panic surfaced within me as I noticed the scientists arguing. I shouted a word of protest, only to realise my ears had popped, and the faint ringing from earlier now sounded like a cacophonous bout of tinnitus.
Something was clearly and utterly wrong. Julian’s deathly stillness as he honed his thoughts had ended, and he was now thrashing around, foaming at the mouth, unable to break free of his confines. I ran back over to his side-
“Don’t touch me!” He managed to force out. I could barely hear him, but the crazed look in his eyes, dilated like a cat’s, convinced me to leave him alone. Instead, I focused my attention on the scientists.
“What are you maniacs doing to him?” I yelled. “Fucking switch that thing off! Now!”
One of them came and pushed me away. His mouth was moving, but I couldn’t make out the words. The noise of the machine was just too loud. There was a collective moment of fear as the tone became ear-splitting. No-one could hear anyone anymore.
Julian looked like he was being possessed. My attention was drawn to the monitor beside him; before, it had been inert, but it was currently displaying a fast-moving, almost psychedelic kaleidoscope of uniform shapes and colours. If you’ve ever seen what a computer looks like when you remove its RAM while it’s running, it was like that, but even more erratic and animated. I was practically hypnotised by it, and as I gazed further and further into its depths, an awful image began to emerge.
It was Julian. I swear to god, I know it sounds crazy, but Julian’s face materialised in the form of this…nightmarish coalescence of text and code. His mouth was open, and his eyes were bulging out of his skull. I turned to my brother to see him doing the exact same expression there on the table, unable to breathe. It made me feel sick to my stomach.
Suddenly, the machine shut down, taking the monitor’s display and oppressive interference with it. Julian’s eyes glazed over, his face went pale as a sheet, and he slumped down onto his back, letting out a huge exhale. It was when he didn’t take another breath that two white-coated men went to check his pulse.
A single head shake between them confirmed what I feared. Gone.
I think I was in shock the whole rest of the night, because I didn’t speak a word to anyone until the morning. They sent me home in a taxi and promised to take care of what had happened. I burst into furious, bitter tears as soon as I put the keys in the door. I was so, so angry at being kept in the dark and lied to for so long, with this having been the culmination. Little did I know that was just the beginning.
Julian’s team called me into work the next day for a private meeting. To maintain the company’s work and appearance, they were going to sweep the whole thing under the rug.
Fucking figures, I remember thinking. My first urge, naturally, was to fight this burial, to expose them and bring about some sense of justice, but I was talked down from it. You might call me cowardly for that, but put yourself in my shoes for a minute; I had no real evidence at hand, and it soon became apparent that the scientists were only operating under my brother’s command. Everything had been planned out in advance, even the system that was being followed now, for what would happen if a fatal accident occurred. Telling the world the true events of that night would’ve been a losing battle – already, they’d began cleaning up their mess – demolishing the warehouse lab, scrubbing all evidence from the archives, etc. It was a tough call, but I felt compelled to adhere to my brother’s wishes and keep moving forward with NeuroWorks. You can judge me for that if you want, but I don’t care.
I forgave them all over time. It wasn’t even really their fault Julian had died that night – there’d been a freak malfunction with the equipment, leading to them being unable to turn it off. I won’t go too in-depth; there’s a lot about it that I still don’t understand to this day. Anyway, once the dust had settled, we put the incident behind us and gave up the whole ‘cutting-edge’ angle for a while. We started pursuing safer technological ventures like media creation, but that was when something strange began happening.
You see, Julian’s cause of death seemed obvious initially – most likely a heart attack or stress-related aneurysm – but the autopsy revealed something startling. There was little to no internal damage anywhere in his body: no burst blood vessels or spasmed arteries. Rather, all the electrical signals in his body had simply vanished simultaneously, deactivating his brain. It was as if he had literally been switched off.
None of this ever got out, of course. NeuroWorks, now one of the most valuable, powerful companies of all time, made sure of that. Julian’s death was publicly credited as a stroke due to undetected high cholesterol levels. But it’s certainly interesting considering what came after.
Over the next few weeks, we had virus troubles. A malicious software was making its way through our computer system. There was a bit of a panic to begin with; an internal investigation revealed we had far too much unsecured data that anyone working for a market competitor would be happy to steal and sell to the highest bidder, but the more we found out about it, the more curious we became. The strange thing about it was only partly what it did. Corruption and deletion are pretty bog-standard as far as viruses go, but its effects were largely patternless, like it was picking items at complete random. But it was also
when it was doing it. After some research, we found that people had been complaining about this mystery malware they’d designated as ‘WerStar’ (due to the word apparently repeating itself over and over again in damaged code and text boxes) since the beginning of the internet. Despite this, its existence had never been formally documented
anywhere, which is extremely bizarre. Whatever WerStar is, it’s completely transcendent of time.
We think we know what’s going on, though. We had our ideas to begin with, and there were plenty of skeptics amongst us, but a recent event has all but verified it. A couple of months ago, I found a .txt file on my computer that wasn’t there the day before, entitled ‘WerStargift’. It was an enormous mass of code that took weeks to fully analyse. Delving into the nitty gritty of the whole thing would take forever, but from what we’ve been able to glean from it (and I promise I’m being serious when I say this), it’s a formula for communicating virtually with the past.
Which brings us to today. Well,
our today. We’re sending this message from the year 2050 to what we’ve calculated to be the mid-2010s. Myself and Julian should only be little children. Don’t worry, this isn’t some Terminator-style mission to erase or alter a former timeline. We just need you to tell us something.
The code wasn’t the only thing in the .txt file. There was a message, a message we can’t read. It’s been cobbled together on an old, outdated editor that isn’t compatible with the modern NeuroWorks setup anymore. Believe me, we’ve tried everything, but not even old computers will display it. We think our failure to view it is the whole reason we’re even able to talk to you now. In your time, it should still be legible. You may need to do something with it, view it through a Source editor, perhaps, but it won’t be hard to decipher.
You should be able to communicate with us, too. Hopefully. We’ve tested this with random forums – dozens of messages we made that were supposedly sent in 2012, and had people respond to them in that same year. We’re well aware of the danger associated with this, but at the same time, it’s the only chance we’ve got.
I’m going to wrap this up by apologising. I’m sorry that I haven’t been more specific throughout this message; there’s a lot I’ve glossed over in the pursuit of keeping things relatively short. Maybe this is just a lost cause – the technology we’re using is still extremely unrefined, so there’s a chance this might not even get out there. But it’s been 10 years since Julian ‘died’, and I’d give anything to be able to see my brother again. If this works, if we’re able to somehow establish contact, then we may even be able to reverse the process, to find him a human host.
So, please, for the love of God, please, what does it say? Where is Julian?

2023.05.29 00:28 Skarlit-Sage There was a strange post on my reddit account, I don’t recall posting it.
I’m not an extraordinary individual. Not to my knowledge at least. However, there have been many anomalous things that have happened to me throughout my life. Some of these incidents were harmless while others were downright haunting. Either way, all these incidents were well beyond simply being “out of the ordinary.”
The most recent of these incidents involve my reddit account. Specifically, a post that I don’t ever remember posting. I don’t have any medical or family history of memory-related disorders. I have never shown any signs of such memory disorders, nor do I have any predisposition to them. I also do not partake in injecting any drugs including alcohol or anything else that could cause me to forget certain events. Therefore, I would’ve remembered originally posting the following post and yet I don’t. The original post was titled, “A former work partner sent me a strange email last night, now I fear for my safety.”
I discovered this post this morning after vomiting for the first time in years. However, the vomit wasn’t what scared me. The fact that it was partly black. Closing the lid of the toilet after vomiting in it, I noticed something on the underside of my left forearm. “Subject Number 9: Attempt number 1; Result: Conversion Rejected; minimal to no physical alteration; failure” where the words printed on my arm. That was the final straw and that’s why I’ve decided to repost the original post rather than simply deleting it.
-Original Post-
It happened last night around 11:30pm. I was getting ready to go to bed when I heard a notification sound from my laptop. It was an email titled, "If you get this email, you’ve been selected for a true opportunity. Don’t resist it!" and attached to it, was a Word Document. It was from an ex-coworker whose real name I won't use (I'll be using the name Dave as a replacement). Not wanting to stay up for what I thought was an advertisement or promotion of some kind, I simply saved the attachment after verifying the email's origin.
I then went to bed before being woken up around 3:00 at night to a loud thumping sound and my laptop being turned on seemingly by itself. Upon opening the laptop, I saw that it was opened to the word document while a page to reddit had been open. After reading the Word Document in its entirety, I was dumbfounded. It wasn’t an advertisement; it was a warning. At first, I would’ve assumed it was just a dumb, ridiculous prank. However, following events made me convinced that’s not the case.
I tried to delete the word document and close reddit with no success and laptop will only pull up reddit, email, and Microsoft Word. I then tried to turn off my computer, but it only gave an error sound in response. Worse yet, my phone won’t even turn on so calling for help via my phone isn’t an option. It’s definitely some sort of virus. Furthermore, in the process of trying to leave my apartment on the fifth floor, the door wouldn’t unlock, and the peep hole was obstructed. Following this, I tried to scream for help, but nothing happened. This has only made me fearful and desperate. That's why I've decided to post the document I received here so I can maybe appease whatever virus this is.
To give context, I met Dave when we were both hired in the same group. Long story short, the job simply wasn't for us, and we were both let go the same day right before the end of our job's probationary period. After that, I went to work for a warehouse job to stay paying for the bills. I'll admit it's not the best job, but I won't complain because it pays enough for me to afford my monthly expenses. However, that didn't stop me from being jealous of Dave once I had learned that he had found work in an unnamed experimental treatment facility.
I live in an area on the southeast coast of North America that's known for constant innovation. Dave on the other hand, lived 20 minutes away from me. That's partially why it wasn't so hard for both of us to find replacement jobs. However, it didn't explain his luck as I never took him as the kind of guy to work in the field of Biology and Gene Therapy. He seemed more of a mechanic than a scientist. Regardless, I was happy for him and moved on with my typical life.
That was all about 2 months ago.
The document that was attached to the email was a letter. Any details such as the name of the CEO or the company Dave worked for have been removed. This was the message I saw when I read the document.
-Message Starts-
[My Name], you’re one of the people I sent this to. You need to read everything that is in this document very carefully, word for word and then post this to a site that it is or will be pulled up on your device. I’ve installed a virus on your computer that will only be nullified once this document has been posted onto a specific internet page designated as “Safe to post” by the virus’ code. I’ve done this to ensure that the truth gets out there not to harm you. I’m sorry it had to be this way.
However, I shall give you some context first.
It all started after I didn't make my previous job's probationary period. I had moved to the local area just for that job. So, when I didn’t make the cut, I originally was planning on moving back to my home state. However, that soon changed as two nights before I was going to begin the move. I had gotten a letter from [Removed] Inc. It was a job offer.
"Hello [Removed], we've heard about your recent and unfortunate separation from [Removed]. We would like to extend a job offer after reviewing your skills and experience as we’ve determined that you'd be a better fit here with us and your contributions valued. Your job would be relatively simple, safe, and rewarding. You will be trained, costs covered by us. Should you choose to stay, you’ll enjoy our amazing benefits including, but not limited to, full insurance coverage, competitive pay, and 152 hours of PTO! All we ask is that you're willing and able to work 12-hour shifts, lift more than 50lbs, comply with our reasonable NDAs and do the job with quality and safety in mind. Should this offer pique your interest, don't hesitate to call us or email us!
Sincerely, [Removed].”
“Today’s biological questions are tomorrow’s biological achievements here at [Removed].”
I must've read it twice before deeming it as "too good to be true" However, the truth is, I was desperate. Desperate enough to take the time and reach out to the company. The fact is, I didn't want to go back to my home state. If I had a chance to stay here, why not try and see if the job is genuine. “The worst thing that can happen is I get my time wasted” I thought.
I called the CEO the next day and to my surprise, long story short, it was successful! I was hired! Not only that but the job's hourly wage was $10 more than my previous job and I only had to work 3 days a week! I was told to come in the next available shift for training.
I eagerly began my first two weeks here normal enough. It was mostly training videos relating to our job procedure, receiving hands-on training for simple tasks, and meeting my coworkers. On the first day, I noticed that all the coworkers barely ever talked. I chalked it all up as they simply being standoffish to me, the new hire. I figured they needed to warm up to me.
After the first 2 weeks were done, I had a good idea of what I'd be doing. I would be experimenting on human and wild animal tissue as well as live animals. This was to study the effects of mutating and altering certain genetic codes. I know the last part might seem unethical, but it was to discover cures for diseases using gene therapy. I wasn’t hurting animals; I was helping them. However, the job still began to feel wrong.
It started with me meeting the CEO. Immediately I noticed something was different about her. Specifically, the way she looked for a CEO. She towered above me at almost seven feet in height and her skin was insanely pale. Her hair was jet-black as was the color of her eye’s irises and the shape of her upturned eyes made her gaze very intimidating as well. She looked young, perhaps 25 at the oldest. Furthermore, the way she dressed; she wore a black and grey camo military-style uniform didn’t help. There was what looked to be the patch of a flag or symbol on her left shoulder, but it wasn’t that of any nation or group I recognized. The symbol/flag in question was a red-letter X in the middle of a red outline of an eye with a black background. Her voice was also very off.
After meeting her, I was then made to sign several NDAs and other contractual documents. The documents I was signing seemed standard but something in me felt wrong with it. After signing the NDAs, I was then introduced to Arin, the person I'd be shadowing. Everything went downhill from there. Immediately, within 5 minutes of meeting him, Arin began to give me a list of ominous, strange suggestions that sounded more like warnings.
- If you hear the CEO seemingly talking to herself behind a locked door with the hallway lights flickering outside, walk away. She’s talking to the voice. Whatever they are talking about is none of your business and you want to keep it that way.
- If you are working by yourself and the lights turn off. Don't move. You will hear a voice, cooperate with it, answer any questions it has and do what it says. I don't want to have to clean up after another, "unfortunate work accident."
- Though this is unlikely, if the CEO tells you to meet them in their room. Do not keep them waiting. She doesn't like it when you're late because it is likely demanding your presence.
- If you have questions about what exactly we do, don't ask. Don't try to tell anyone outside of this facility the nature of our work and its end goal should you find out. It's not us that will come for you, it's the voice.
- If you happen to see the figure that the voice belongs to, it has respect for you. Keep it that way but avoid eye contact with it.
- Do not refer to the voice as the CEO or a mental illness. Even if that’s what it seems like, I promise you It not that. You treat it with the utmost respect and legitimacy even when it's not around.
- None of these suggestions I’ve given you are a "joke" of any kind. Take it seriously.
I didn't say anything, but I was more than confused. I could tell by his face that he was intent on convincing me. In fact, he had the most serious look I had ever seen on anyone’s face. He then said, "I have your back but don't get yourself in trouble. Don't mention what I've told you at lunch either. Everyone learns in their third week. Now, you know what they say about Rome? When in Rome, do as the romans do yeah? Well, you're in Rome so do as we do. Oh, and I'll say this one final time, nothing I've told you is to be talked about outside of the workplace. Don't think about it too hard though. Just don't forget either." My heart began to race slightly after hearing this as I struggled to go about the work routine of isolating and studying DNA strands, reorganizing documents, Injecting certain labelled syringes into various lab animals, etc.
The next 4 days went roughly the same as I got into the routine of things. I got better at my tasks and was even allowed to work alone by the end of the week. All the other coworkers at lunch would say things like, "I went to go work at my station but the door to the room was locked, I then heard the CEO talking on the other end." or "The lights went out at my station yesterday, IT didn't say anything. The lights came on after 2 minutes. IT must've been observing." As these things were said, they exchanged knowing looks with no sign of any joking going on. At this point I was beginning to be convinced that the CEO was insane just by that alone.
The following 4 weeks were almost completely normal. There was no mention of "The Voice" except towards the end of my 4th week when Arin said, "IT must be taking a break or a vacation if it does that sort of thing." before one of our coworkers apparently got a little too clever and said, "IT might just decide to screw off for once." Everyone then stopped to look at him with stern expressions and no one even smiled. No one else said anything about the voice for the rest of lunch that day. The whole event made me nervous even more.
Midway through my 5th week, I had my first encounter with the voice while working the last hour of my shift. I was in a level A biohazard suit and about to mix two separate solutions in a petri dish based on instructions projected on my station's computer screen. One was dark red and labelled, "Human Blood; O- Type" and the other was black and simply labelled, "Black Blood." I was just about to mix them when the all the lights, including the light from my computer monitor cut out. Then, I heard a low-pitched, inhuman voice speak, "So interesting.” It spoke before continuing, “Tomorrow you will be made to do something dangerous but very important. In fact, that's why we brought you here. You are expendable due to your lack of prior experience and knowledge. However, I know you need the money and if you come in tomorrow, I’ll pay you 100k after you complete the task.”
The voice was beyond haunting because of how abnormal it sounded. It was like 3 people speaking at once. One voice was a deep, yet feminine, prominent, and loud voice while the two sounded like a man’s faint whispers echoing the same words. The voice then continued to my dismay, “Now, you were about to mix the two agents. Remember to destroy the petri dish after 3 minutes.” I didn't even ask how it knew to respond with that. I just stood there drenched in sweat and shaking, horrified at the whole experience. Then I thought back to the rules I was told on day seven. There was no doubt in my mind that this place was insane!
The voice then left without a trace as the lights came back on. I then completed the task according to instructions given. I watched as the Human Blood mixed with the Black substance. The entire petri dish became black within 1 minute before reverting to blood. When analyzing the liquid under a microscope, I saw that the cells had their entire genetic code rewritten. There were also what appeared to be stem cell like cell in the blood. They were black and moved through the other cells mutating any that hadn’t been converted. I immediately stepped away from the microscope as I gasped and then disposed of the mutagenic waste by placing it in the incinerator. The day then ended not long after that. I was reluctant to come back but the money promised was undeniable.
When I got to my assigned station at the basement level of the facility the next day, I was greeted by the CEO again who told me we’d be working on a "willing test subject" for an experiment. She also told me that I and my immediate coworkers were the only employees on site except for a few executives that would also be present. I was still shaken up from the previous day’s experience and the weirdness of that current day. However, I was then fully convinced with the promise of an additional 100k being deposited into my account immediately after successfully completing my task. I would've turned back had I known what would happen less than 30 minutes later.
I was escorted by the CEO to an all-steel room except for a panel of heavily reinforced, thick observation glass and door that looked like it belonged in Fort Knox. In the middle of the room lies a medical bed with a tube full of black fluid beside it. Several of my coworkers then stepped in the room with me as they saw my confusion. The door then closed behind them. Then Arin spoke, “So I guess the CEO didn’t tell you. Listen, there’s a reason why our team is the only one here today. It to put you in that bed.” I shouted in protest, “What! No! I don’t agree with this! Please, you can’t do this to me! This is illegal! Stop it!” Arin then replied with the last words I heard him speak, “Sorry buddy, this is why we brought you here. No one’s going to find out! We are all getting 100k individually to do this. You’re not the only one who needs money right now. Now let’s just make this easy for everyone. Get on there!” I then replied with, “Fuck you! I kill all of you!” as they wrestled me to bed with ease. They then cuffed my feet and hands to the bed with metallic restraints. The last thing I remember is a cloth being put over my nose as a strong scent filled my nostrils.
The next thing I remember was my eyes being covered by my hands as cried. I then pulled my hands away to see that they had become elongated, and my fingers had become claw-like. I then looked down at my mutated, blood-soaked body in horror. All around me was death and bodily destruction. I didn’t recognize a single body. The bed, equipment, walls, and floor were painted with blood and littered with human tissue. I immediately froze for a second time before retching. As a towered above the destruction, I realized I was significantly taller than I remembered. Then I looked ahead of me and saw that the tube with the black fluid was empty. “…No” Was the only word I could get out. That was when I noticed that my voice was altered. I sounded like the voice except prominent voice was a demonic version of my original voice and the faint whispering voices that came from my throat afterwards were feminine. Then I heard The Voice call out to me from the direction of the door behind me. I turned and saw the CEO. “It’s okay child, you’re mine now.” Were the words she spoke to me… and they will be the words she speaks to you.
Dear viewer, I am known by many names. One of them is Goddess Cerridwen. I know all of this is a lot to take in but soon it will all make sense. You were meant to worship me and soon you will as well as everyone else revieing “An email supposedly from [Dave’s real name]”. Your device is being tracked as of the time the Virus is installed onto it. I’m on my way to take you. You shall spread the word. It will do you no good, but it will make my name known furthermore so they may worship me.
-Message ends-
After I first got done reading this, I thought it was some ridiculous joke but now I no longer feel that way as the lights have begun to flicker and I’m beginning to hear whispering sounds from my closet. I’m going to try one more thing to escape.
I thought of an idea to get out of this situation and that was to start a fire in my kitchen to trip the fire alarm and get help. However, as I went over to the stove the power shut out and all the light from the outside streetlights seemed to dim unnaturally until no light came through. The only thing illuminating my entire apartment was my now laptop with its now eerie blue glow lighting up the dark world around me.
I decided to do the only thing I could think of, post the document on reddit. However, just as I was about to do this, I heard what sounded like three demonic voices speaking at once coming from behind me. Then I lost all hope of escape as the horror of reality sunk in and froze my body still as Goddess Cerridwen, the CEO, spoke to me, “Once you read the document, I simply manifested myself near your device’s location. That’s how I’ll get the first of the other ones too. You’re mine now. Go on, post it.”
-End of Original Post-
As I’m reposting this on here, there’ve been several local reports of people in my area going missing with no trace. “The first 10 of the missing people had received an email from [Dave’s real name]. However, now people are going missing without having received any previous let-” I turned off the TV after hearing that. The local news had also been saying that some other people had been waking up with words stamped on their arms. Some of these people that had reported these words on their forearms have since gone missing again. It's likely that whatever this “Goddess Cerridwen” is, it is responsible for the disappearances in my area. Furthermore, it's coming for me now and I know this for a fact. I say this because no light is coming through my apartment despite it still being mid-day and the lights of my apartment… have begun to flicker rapidly.
