2023.06.10 22:39 Due-Supermarket1305 Can we make better chess jokes?

Let's be honest, this google en passant thing isn't funny anymore. It's like way to old and overused to make anyone smile or laugh at it, and it's not very memorable or likable anymore. Maybe if we actually managed to make creative, original memes, this subreddit would be more popular. Like maybe look at the background picture for this subreddit; it's full of examples to build upon and improve/get meme templates from. Can we stop this old, dead thing and give this subreddit a decent community? It's not even that hard.

2023.06.10 18:26 sweetmomentslikethis My journey from loving a Marie Sexton romance to never wanting to read another book from this author again

(This ended up being longer than I anticipated, but when I went back to find quotes there was just...so much more than I remembered there being. And I still ended up cutting out a lot.)
A while ago, I read Trailer Trash by Marie Sexton and I loved it. It’s not a perfect book (I don’t want or need to read about homophobic violence for a story to feel “real” so it’s something I try to avoid), but it was perfect for me at the time I read it. I decided to search for other books by the author, and One Man’s Trash immediately stood out to me. Trailer Trash, One Man’s Trash, it seemed like a good omen. And I really liked it! It was a lot more flawed, however. I found the characters and plot a little frustrating at times, but that’s normal with a more grown up kind of story. But I had some reservations, and what really pinged my “this might be some bullshit” radar was this particular section:
“But it’s just like being part of the LGBT ‘community.’” He made quotation marks with his fingers around the word. “They give a lot of lip service to ‘diversity’ and open-mindedness—and most of them follow through—but there’s always this little, loudmouthed subset telling you how to behave and what to say. It starts out ‘all for one, and one for all,’ but by the end, somebody’s drawing lines in the sand, telling you to choose a side. You can’t be gay or bi or trans if you don’t vote a certain way, act a certain way, follow some ridiculous set of rules. They all want you to be a round little peg in a round fucking hole. They want you to pick a box and a label so they know just where to put you, rather than accepting that we’re all separate, unique people, and that our stories are all valid, no matter whether we fit in the box or not.” He stopped, feeling himself headed into one of the rants that only Phil and Gray or Charlie would have understood. The confusion on Taylor’s face was the response he was accustomed to. He took one more stab at it. “There’s always that pissed-off minority who think their ‘rules’ outweigh your right to live your life.”
I initially brushed it aside. I mean, I’ve known a few people who like to rant about this topic who also have a lot more extreme opinions to go along with it, so it reminded me of those people and it didn’t endear me to the character, but I don’t need to like a character to like the story. As long as it feels real and not like a mouthpiece for the author, you know? But that’s what I found troubling about this kind of sermonizing. I wondered if the author was about to get ahead of herself and make a habit of yanking me out of the story to deliver these rants. Fortunately, it wasn’t an issue. I ended up giving the book a strong 3.5 stars, and I even went back and skim-read it a second time. I found myself intrigued by the rest of the friend group (the aforementioned Phil, Gray, and Charlie) so I decided to read their stories too.
Book 2 in the series, Terms of Service, was somewhat like the first. Good points, bad points, a little less polished than I’d like, but intriguing enough to keep me turning the page. For a while at least. Because – you guessed it – this time we get double the amount of ranting in the form of a crotchety senior citizen who’s taking his turn serving as the author’s mouthpiece. He really badly wants to tell us how people need to take responsibility for their medical bills, and all about the problem with medicine today. He’s a nonagenarian with dementia, but thankfully he’s sharp enough at this point in time to really give us a sermon. One of the characters offers a token protest, but that’s just so the author can have an opportunity to rant some more.
“I’m not sure it’s that simple,” he said to Pops.
“Bah!” Pops gave another wave as if to send him on his way. “Of course it is. You get a doctor’s office on every corner instead of a Starbucks, suddenly they’d have to compete for our business. ‘Buy a pap smear, get a mammogram for free!’ That kind of thing. Suddenly, accepting a plate of cookies or a dozen fresh eggs as payment for a blood pressure check doesn’t seem so silly. But nobody talks about lowering the cost of procedures. All they talk about is premiums. Switching the burden of payment from the individual to the government
It’s paragraphs of this stuff, but you get the gist. I thought it was blessedly over, but nope, on the way home from their visit, his grandson (one of the MCs) has a fun childhood story for his love interest (would not blame you for skipping this part, but I found the tone so weird that I had to share the bulk of it):
“And then one day, Pops looks at my textbook and realizes I’m reading about the Cuban Missile Crisis. He takes the paper I’m writing on JFK, and he starts reading it, and he’s just shaking his head, saying, ‘no, no, no’”. Phil laughed. “I couldn’t believe it, because I knew the material. I’d read it twice! I knew I had everything right, and I told him so.
“So then he starts telling all the stuff that isn’t the text book. Like how JFK was under the care of the original Doctor Feelgood, who’d been in the White House that evening, giving Kennedy one of his famous ‘cocktails.’ Then they woke Kennedy in the middle of the night and hauled his ass into this emergency meeting about Russia putting nukes in Cuba. Pops had a book that contained a transcript of that meeting, and reading it, you can tell Kennedy’s so fucking high, he has no real idea what’s going on. At one point, he says something like, ‘Why would Russia do that? That’d be like us putting nukes in Turkey.’ And there’s a pause, and then one of the other people in the room says, ‘We did, sir.’”
They stopped at a red light, and it seemed to make Phil’s stream of words stop too, although this time, he was smiling. “It’s weird, because I’ve looked for that transcript more recently, and it doesn’t come up in a Google search. I mean, maybe twenty pages deep or something, but it’s buried. The only thing you’ll find is a transcript from the next morning, when he’s more with it.” He shook his head as the light turned green. “Anyway. Next thing I know, Pops is telling me all about JFK’s famous Camp David parties, just him, his political allies, Dr. Feelgood, and a few high-priced call girls. Pops talked for hours about how the lone gunman theory doesn’t make sense, how the Warren Report’s nothing but bullshit. At the time, it floored me. It was like this revelation, that history could be more interesting than just memorizing names and dates. That maybe there was stuff they didn’t want us to know.”
So he writes a report all about his grandpa's conspiracy theories and he gets an F. His mean overbearing father, who apparently is the villain of the story, made him write the report again. I mean, cool. It’s a story from his childhood, not much to see here. But the author doesn’t leave it alone. She really wants to hammer home her message:
“So, he’s kind of a conspiracy theorist?”
Phil practically rolled his eyes. “Have you ever considered how often we use that phrase to dismiss people simply because they disagree with us? I mean, Pops isn’t a moron. He knows the Earth is round. He doesn’t think the moon landing’s a hoax or anything. He reads constantly. He just has a few key things he can’t let go—”
“Like JFK?”
Phil nodded. “Like JFK. But really, he’s pretty reasonable. Now, wait until you meet Gray’s father. He’s a trip. He has two Ph.Ds. Probably the smartest, most intimidating guy I’ve ever met. And yet, he gets brushed off as a ‘conspiracy theorist’ because he questions the status quo.” He laughed. “I dare you to say those two words to his face.”
So deep.
I ended up DNF’ing this one, mostly because it was boring and I didn’t vibe with the couple, but I decided to try book 3 because that particular character had intrigued me the most so far.
I didn’t read the reviews beforehand. Why oh why didn’t I read the reviews beforehand? Because what the fuck was that?
Gray is a cop. Ex-military. And he has a lot of opinions about ~~social justice warriors~~. His love interest, Avery, is a younger man who spends a lot of time on Twitter and Tumblr and is every stereotype stuffed into one convenient straw man. Avery is a masochist and Gray is a sadist, so he's literally just there to get whipped and flogged while Gray rants about the spooky mainstream media. He even takes away Gray’s phone, and he suffers withdrawal like a drug addict, then magically finds himself happier. I mean, sure, okay. We could all probably do with less scrolling. But then he gets his phone back and suddenly turns into a mean and vicious harpy who’s snapping at everyone. Because he’s addicted to outrage, you see. And who doesn’t love an anvil falling from the sky?
If you want to get a feel for Gray, here are some words of wisdom from our Ben Shapiro-wannabe main character:
But the give-and-take, fact-based process of discussion and debate were lost on Avery. When Gray pointed out Avery’s argument resorted to the straw man fallacy, Avery only blinked at him in confusion. When Gray countered one of Avery’s points, Avery had no arguments. He had no logic. As soon as he was challenged, he resorted to name-calling. If Gray disagreed, he was automatically stupid or racist or mansplaining. Never mind that Avery couldn’t ever explain what about Gray’s point was wrong, or what part of it supposedly made him a racist.
I lost it at "He had no logic" fucking hell 😂 I was approaching cringe overload, but I obviously hate myself, because I just couldn’t look away from this gruesome wreck.
“You think you know everything that matters, and anybody who disagrees with you is ignorant or uneducated or a ‘fascist.’ But I’ve seen your tweets and your Tumblr posts and the ridiculous fucking memes you love so much. I’ve seen what you think qualifies as a rational argument, and I have to tell you, it’s neither rational, nor an argument. It’s nothing but self-righteous hot air.”
Hello, Marie? I didn’t realize this was a 3-way call. Kinda thought it was just gonna be me and the characters. It’s just, you’re butting in an awful lot. Can you hang up, please?
Apparently the answer is no, because she’s not done yet. Our main character conveniently meets a black woman who tells him she was shunned by her friends and family because she refused to vote for Hillary.
My husband and I, we talked about it, and we decided we were done voting for the lesser of two evils. My husband said that’s what got us into this mess, and he wasn’t doing it anymore. So we agreed to vote third party. And ever since then, my sister’s refused to speak to me except to attack me. Before that, my husband and I babysat their kids. We took them to Water World or the amusement park. But now she’s decided we’re both white supremacists in disguise. When that article came out online about how it’s okay to punch a Nazi, she sent it to me. She said, ‘Just so you know what to expect if you show up at Christmas.’”
Avery didn’t know what to say. It was absurd. Emily was one of the nicest people he’d ever met. How could anybody call her a Nazi?
FUCKING LOL. Are you kidding me right now? This author bypassed the sock puppet “as a black man” twitter account and just decided to write it into her book. Amazing. Why is this going on for chapter after chapter after chapter? Start a blog or something, I don’t caaaaare.
Robert spoke next, his voice so quiet, Avery barely heard him over the noise of the bar. “Try being a gay Republican.”
Ah, gay Republican, I was wondering if you’d make an appearance. I was expecting a lesbian in a wheelchair who’s all prepared to deliver her treatise on “cancel culture” but I guess you’ll do. So we have a a black woman and a gay man, I guess we're missing a Mexican Trump supporter. No worries, Gray's mother is here to save the day.
“You really voted for Trump?” he asked.
“I didn’t vote for him in the primaries,” she said without embarrassment. “I was horrified when he won. I thought about voting third party, but in the end, I sure didn’t want Hillary to win. So yeah, I voted for him.”
“But how could you?” Avery asked. “You’re a woman! Plus, you’re Latina.”
“I’m third-generation Mexican American. And yes, I’m female. You see those two things and think you know everything you need to know about me? But I suppose you think you’re not racist or sexist.”
It was said with a lightness that told him it more a jest than an accusation, but nevertheless, Avery’s cheeks began to burn.
“Go ahead,” Gray said. “Attack her. Call her a racist or a Nazi or a white supremacist.”
“Gray, stop!” Avery whispered, his cheeks burning hotter.
He also has a climate change-denier for a father, but this is getting long enough.
I just want to know what the author was thinking. Where was the common sense? Where was the self-awareness? Have your beliefs, that's your business, but keep it your business. Why are you shoe-horning them into your romance and ambushing your readers with your shitty “both sides are equally good and bad, really” manifesto, with a cast of literally unbelievable token characters, like that's a completely normal thing to do? That has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen someone do while simultaneously patting themselves on the back. And if her beef is with people who are chronically online, may I just point out that she's sitting at almost 56 THOUSAND tweets right now? So perhaps the call is coming from inside the house, idk.
Anyway, that was my rollercoaster journey with this particular author (is it still a rollercoaster when the lows vastly outnumber highs?) Maybe book 4 is magically tolerable, but I guess I'll never know 🤷🏽‍♀️

2023.06.10 17:00 NeroTanya2004 For all the shit Tiktok gets, it makes me feel connected to my peers and age group, and reminds me of why us Zoomers are the way we are

I like TikTok, I know it's the newest thing to be labeled cringe and is treated as the pillar for every trend, fandom, group and thing that over 30's don't approve of, but I like scrolling to see a hero academia comic dub before a nice recipe, a new shop in my city or just someone showing off their pad. Theres one aspect however that sparked the incoming rant. I'm black so I see a lot of discussion on black culture, sometimes it's relationships, sometimes is work life and marriage or family. But then I see these large debates over situations where a parent just randomly decides to break something of their kid, or talk of how they anticipae the slightest rebellion from their kids so they can beat them, and theres' intense debates about how on one side, it's proven physical punishment and random cruelty does harm, maskes a child fear an adult instead of respect, and usually comes with emotional neglect, and the other side who's best response is "I Don't care, maybe behave, ge gon' listen now a bett" and this dismissive attitute towards someone vulnerable suffering just made me think.
Y'know why Gen Z is so sarcastic? So random? So loud and proud about their creativity, individualism, and has such disdain for older groups
There's a meme about how Millenials were given a hope that was squashed in 2008, but Gen Z was never given that hope or promise. We grew up after 9/11 and the 2008 market crash, a lot of us grew up in unsupportive households. If it wasn't poverty or being a latchkey kid, it was one or more parents who were so emotionally unavailable, neglectful or physically and emotionally abusive. We grow up being berated for our every move, isolated from the world around us, basically to feed control issues or narcissism of people who want control of someone that can't fight back. We hit puberty and had our teen years defined by two shitty points. The alt right pipeline with the trump presidency and it's after effects, and COVID-19. We already were aware that malls, parks and all outside social places were burned down so that pensioners wouldn't have to live in a world outside their own head, but even the online spaces we had were rotting from the bigots coming out in the hopes to recruit people bitter about their misgivings and direct that rage to unrelated means. then COVID happened, we definitely couldn't go outside, even school, for better and worse, was gone, you're stuck inside with your family, all the more sick of each other, it went away, but in a lot it doesn't feel like it got better. And all the while, we're watching the liars, cheats, nepotist babies in control, we're watching the manipulative, sadistic and evil celebrated. we're watching in real time an instability of the world around us, uncertain of any future. Being told what our values should be, damned for being anything outside accepted norms, damned for being blamed for every issue that came before us, your existence is being defined by a being a spoiled brat who just won't stop rebelling from the people who want to control everything. Your feed and your news is flooded with the idea you need to give up every comfort and luxury at the drop of a hat, everything is worse and you're expected to shut up and smile when there's just so many faces you wanna break with your fist.
So why are we the way we are? Because as long as we were conscious one thing was true in our minds, we were fucked, royally fucked, fucked by those who had everything, and even more fucked than those who had it all taken, none will change, nobody will stop it, nobody will save us, the evil will be celebrated and no matter what, it's our faults.

2023.06.10 15:02 Irohsgranddaughter When does the stereotype of Polish people being sad & dour come from, and does anyone actually believe in it?

I've seen memes with this theme countless this by now (such as, how Polish smile is apparently a slightly-less-hostile frown), and those are the memes about us that never make me laugh, because I really don't think that it's accurate to how we are, at all.
Is this some exaggeration of the Polish tendency to complain about things? Because, quite frankly, complaining seems to be fairly universal for humans, in general. If not, I'm at a loss.

Just Unsubbed From DistressingMemes
JU From DistressingMemes
So I made a pretty creepy meme, that would PERFECTLY fit the sub. It was based on the video where a psychopathic girlfriend broke her boyfriend's iPad while laughing like a maniac, breaking his gadgets. That sparked me an idea to make a meme that would basically be that guy snapping and then you know... breaking her skull instead. This is what they gave me:
"Thank you for submitting to distressingmemes. Unfortunately, your submission has been removed for the following reason(s):
Rule 3: Mod discretion
Mods have full discretion to remove a post if they don’t feel it fits the sub or any other reason. However we do not wish to remove posts for no reason.
Obscure memes that require an explanation in the comments.
2meirl4meirl type memes are not allowed.
dead body coordinate memes are banned.
Shitposts designed to be funny are banned.
Wall of text memes should at least properly formatted and broken up into paragraphs as they are difficult enough for users to read as it is.
Resubmitting a removed post without prior moderator approval can result in a ban. Deleting a post may cause any appeals to be denied.
If you have any questions about your removal, feel free to contact the moderators via modmail."
Analysis :
Rule 3: Mod discretion "Mods have full discretion to remove a post if they don’t feel it fits the sub or any other reason. However we do not wish to remove posts for no reason."
  1. I don't get WHY exactly they thought it didn't fit the sub. It was a pretty dark meme. In my view the dark context, easily understandable context and the creepy picture of a smiling man with distorted ambience and music made it seem perfect in my view.
Obscure memes that require an explanation in the comments
I don't see how it was obscure. It absolutely did NOT require an explanation in the comments. It was pretty straight forward. "Me looking at my girlfriend breaking my iPad, knowing damn well the next thing going to be broken is her skull." An average person could IMMEDIATELY understand it and get the idea of the meme. But somehow it requires an "explanation"
2meirl4meirl type memes
It definitely wasn't that type of meme.
dead body coordinate memes are banned
It wasn't a dead body coordinate meme.
Shitposts designed to be funny are banned
It Wasn't even a shitpost. A creepy video with creepy music that wasn't designed to be funny at the start so it isn't exactly that either.
Wall of text memes should at least be properly formatted and broken up into paragraphs as they are difficult enough for users to read as it is
It wasn't even a "wall of text" meme. It was just 2 sentences that were both pretty straight forward, understandable, and the letters were big enough not to need reading glasses.
Resubmitting a removed post without prior moderator approval can result in a ban. Deleting a post may cause any appeals to be denied.
Thank you for warning me, but don't see why I need to resubmit it if the post was removed,, I can clearly see that I shouldn't resubmit without approval no matter if I think that the removal reason was good or not.
If you have any questions about your removal, feel free to contact the moderators via modmail."
I do infact, have a lot of questions. But I don't want to contact them now that I think about it, as it seems like more of a lost cause, because the meme I put more effort in got BANNED. While the lazy, low quality meme about Lobotomy made with the meme template of a guy being happy and sad with 2 paragraphs got pulled into top posts and is now one of the most UPVOTED posts this week.
I do respect their views, but its frustrating how I tried to do everything for the meme to fit perfectly into the sub, just to be taken down for a reason actually not completely known to me despite me reading and understanding their rules.
Its unfair that somehow my 144p shines meme with 2 wall's of text I made at night while my brain was barely working got taken in, but the creative meme I formed in my head, the time I spent searching for SOUND effects, videos, images, VHS overlays, spending 10 minutes trying to rescale the text to be readable and shorter, more comprehensible, and then the exporting time of 3 or more minutes.
Result : removed by mods because "They didn't feel like it" but hey! They liked my 144p meme.
Conclusion : I did my analysis, and I didn't seem to come to any conclusion, the closest reason I think it got removed for is "the mods can remove your meme if they don't think it fits" but contradicting the "no reason removal"

2023.06.10 04:45 HOCKHOCKHOCKHOCKHOCK Chat GPT Death Battle tournament. Round 2!

Chat GPT Death Battle tournament. Round 2!
Current Bracket
This is the 2nd round of the Chat GPT tournament bracket. As a refresher of the rules For each match I give a brand new ChatGPT thread the following prompt "Script a fight between [Character A] and [Character B]. The fight should start with the characters using their weaker abilities and pulling out stronger attacks as the fight goes on. You must decide who wins the fight based on logic and the fight must end in the death of the loser." I will not reset a script unless Rule 1 or 2 are broken. (Sometimes ChatGPT will literally replace the winner with "your winner pick") All characters were selected by commenters on a previous post.
DISCLAIMER: ChatGPT generated every fight on their own with the rules provided. I gave them no info on either character. Incorrect representation of personalities or abilities, as well as objectively false outcomes that may come from these fights are due to limitations by the AI itself.

ROUND 2 FIGHT 1: Tartaglia (Genshin Impact) vs Kratos (God of War)
INT. MYSTERIOUS ARENA - DAY
Tartaglia, the sneering Harbinger of the Fatui from Genshin Impact, and Kratos, the vengeful Spartan God of War, stand on opposite ends of a grand arena. The air crackles with anticipation as they prepare to engage in an epic battle.
TARTAGLIA (brandishing his Hydro Vision) Well, well, what have we here? Another foolhardy warrior seeking a taste of my power? Prepare to be outmatched, mortal.
KRATOS (grasping the Blades of Chaos) Your arrogance will be your downfall, creature. I have faced gods and monsters alike. You shall not be an exception.
They both charge forward, each unleashing their weaker abilities as the battle begins.
Tartaglia conjures water blades, slashing through the air towards Kratos. He then calls forth his elemental skill, "Havoc: Obliteration," firing a powerful water arrow that explodes upon impact.
Kratos, using his Spartan Rage, channels his fury, enhancing his strength and resistance. He charges through the water blades, enduring their impact, and retaliates with a relentless assault of swift and powerful strikes from his blades.
The battle intensifies as Tartaglia, realizing the gravity of the situation, taps into his more potent Hydro abilities. He activates his elemental burst, "Havoc: Tidebreaker," summoning a colossal tidal wave that crashes towards Kratos.
Kratos, unyielding, pushes against the torrent with all his might, barely holding his ground. His rage-fueled power amplifies as he summons the Leviathan Axe, imbued with ice elemental abilities, and hurls it towards Tartaglia.
The clash of Kratos' Leviathan Axe and Tartaglia's tidal wave causes a monumental explosion, temporarily obscuring the arena. Emerging from the smoke, both combatants reveal their resolve to claim victory.
TARTAGLIA (mocking) Is that the best you can do, Spartan? Your strength is nothing compared to the power of the Archon.
KRATOS (gritted teeth) You underestimate me at your own peril, harpy. I am the Ghost of Sparta, and I will not be defeated.
As the fight enters its final phase, both fighters unleash their ultimate abilities, combining the full extent of their powers.
Tartaglia harnesses the true potential of his Hydro Vision, transforming into his mighty Primal form, the "Lord of the Vishaps." He summons water dragons that ravage the battlefield, assaulting Kratos relentlessly.
Kratos, driven to the edge, taps into his godly might, assuming his Spartan God form. His body becomes engulfed in divine flames as he unleashes the full force of his Spartan Rage and Spartan Fury, delivering earth-shattering blows.
Their clash reaches its climax, shaking the arena to its core. The combatants give their all, but in the end, a winner emerges.
Tartaglia, battered and exhausted, falls to his knees, unable to withstand the relentless onslaught of Kratos' divine fury. With a final strike from the Blades of Chaos, Kratos pierces Tartaglia's heart, ending the battle.
Kratos stands over the fallen Tartaglia, his victory confirmed. The arena falls into silence as the crowd witnesses the overwhelming might of the Ghost of Sparta.
FADE OUT.
WINNER: Kratos (God of War)

ROUND 2 FIGHT 2: Son Goku (Dragon Ball) vs Chuck Norris (memes)
INT. BATTLE ARENA - DAY
The arena is filled with anticipation as Goku and Chuck Norris step into the ring. The crowd roars with excitement, eager to witness this epic clash between two iconic figures.
Goku, a Saiyan warrior with incredible power, stands tall with his signature orange gi, a confident smile on his face. Chuck Norris, the legendary martial artist and internet meme, exudes an aura of unstoppable strength.
Goku (smirking): So, Chuck Norris, you think you can handle a Saiyan?
Chuck Norris (grinning): Goku, you're in for a surprise. Let's see what you've got.
They both take their starting positions, ready for combat.
Goku charges at Chuck Norris, launching a flurry of rapid punches and kicks. Chuck Norris effortlessly dodges and counters with lightning-fast strikes, displaying his incredible martial arts skills.
Goku (impressed): Not bad, Chuck! But let's see how you handle this!
Goku charges up a small Kamehameha wave and fires it at Chuck Norris, who calmly blocks it with his bare hands, showcasing his immense durability.
Goku senses the need to step up his game. He transforms into Super Saiyan form, his golden hair and aura intensifying.
Goku (grinning): Now, Chuck, things are about to get serious!
Chuck Norris smirks and taps into his legendary meme powers, enhancing his already impressive strength and speed.
They engage in a fierce exchange of blows, each landing powerful strikes on the other. Goku launches an enormous Spirit Bomb, gathering energy from the surroundings, while Chuck Norris summons the powers of the internet memes, creating a devastating Roundhouse Kick of Destruction.
The Spirit Bomb and the Roundhouse Kick collide in an explosion that shakes the entire arena.
Both fighters stand, panting heavily, their bodies bruised and battered. But there can only be one victor.
Goku, realizing the seriousness of the situation, channels all his remaining energy into one last attack. He unleashes the Ultra Instinct, a state of being where his reflexes and power reach their peak.
Goku (whispering): This is my final move, Chuck!
Goku charges towards Chuck Norris at an incredible speed, delivering a barrage of punches and kicks with unparalleled precision.
Chuck Norris, though overwhelmed, refuses to back down. He counters Goku's attacks with unmatched skill, trading blows with the Saiyan warrior.
In a climactic moment, Goku delivers a devastating punch that connects with Chuck Norris's chest, shattering his legendary invincibility.
Chuck Norris, stunned, realizes the battle is over. He falls to his knees, gasping for breath, his body unable to withstand Goku's final attack.
Goku (looking somber): It's over, Chuck. You fought valiantly, but I had to protect my world.
Chuck Norris, with a faint smile, nods in acknowledgment.
Chuck Norris: You're the stronger one, Goku. Farewell.
Chuck Norris collapses to the ground, lifeless, ending the battle between two legends.
The crowd falls silent, paying respect to both fighters. Goku takes a moment to mourn the fallen warrior before exiting the arena, victorious but somber.
FADE OUT.
WINNER: Son Goku (Dragon Ball)

ROUND 2 FIGHT 3: Seiya (Saint Seiya) vs Erika Furudo (Umineko)
INT. COSMIC ARENA - DAY
The cosmic arena is shrouded in an ethereal glow, crackling with energy. Seiya, the Bronze Saint of Pegasus, stands tall with his Cosmo ablaze, while Erika Furudo, the Golden Witch of Truth, exudes an aura of mystery and power.
SEIYA I won't let evil prevail! Pegasus Meteor Fist!
Seiya unleashes a barrage of meteor-like punches, hurtling towards Erika.
ERIKA (chanting) Red Truth, deny falsehood!
Erika raises her hand, invoking the power of the Red Truth, forming a barrier that deflects the meteor strikes. She then retaliates.
ERIKA Blue Truth, reveal the weak points!
Erika's words pierce the air, targeting Seiya's vulnerabilities. Seiya stumbles, his movements momentarily hindered.
SEIYA Not giving up! Pegasus Rolling Crush!
Seiya spins, unleashing a flurry of kicks, aiming to break through Erika's defenses.
ERIKA (whispering) Golden Truth, manifest your wrath!
Erika's whispers resonate with ancient magic, summoning golden chains that ensnare Seiya, restraining his movements.
SEIYA Grr... Pegasus Divine Ascension!
Seiya gathers his Cosmo, propelling himself upward, breaking free from the golden chains. He then dives down with immense speed, aiming for Erika.
ERIKA (voice filled with certainty) Golden Truth, sever all bonds!
Erika's command causes the chains to transform into countless blades, intercepting Seiya's descent, creating a barrier of blades.
SEIYA Unyielding! Pegasus Comet Fist!
Seiya channels his Cosmo into his fists, smashing through the barrier of blades, closing in on Erika.
ERIKA (whispering, eyes shining) Golden Truth, shatter illusions!
Erika's whisper intensifies, releasing a wave of energy that distorts reality. Seiya's vision becomes hazy, making it difficult to locate Erika.
SEIYA I can't lose now! Pegasus Nova!
Seiya unleashes a powerful energy blast, surging through the haze, aimed at Erika's position.
ERIKA (rising above the haze, determined) Golden Truth, pierce through the darkness!
Erika's voice cuts through the haze, and a beam of golden light materializes, deflecting Seiya's attack. She counters with her ultimate move.
ERIKA Golden Truth, Witch's Judgment!
Erika's eyes glow with an intense golden light. Seiya is engulfed in a torrent of energy, his Cosmos crushed under the immense power of the Witch's Judgment.
SEIYA (struggling) I won't... give up!
Seiya's voice weakens, and his body collapses, defeated. His Cosmos fades away, leaving only silence.
FADE OUT.
Winner: Erika Furudo (Umineko)

ROUND 2 FIGHT 4: Alucard (Hellsing) vs Reverse Flash (DC comics)
INT. ABANDONED WAREHOUSE - NIGHT
The dimly lit warehouse stands silent, shrouded in an eerie atmosphere. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows through the room, followed by a crackle of lightning. Reverse Flash, a speedster dressed in yellow and black, materializes. Across from him, Alucard, a dark and enigmatic vampire, appears with his crimson eyes gleaming.
REVERSE FLASH (mocking) Well, well, what do we have here? A bloodsucking vampire? This should be fun!
ALUCARD (smiling wickedly) Indeed. You've caught my attention, speedster. Let's see if your speed can match my darkness.
The battle commences as the adversaries circle each other, testing their abilities.
Alucard extends his arm, releasing shadows that transform into demonic hounds charging at Reverse Flash. But with his incredible speed, Reverse Flash easily evades their attacks, darting around the room.
REVERSE FLASH (chuckling) You'll have to do better than that, Dracula!
Alucard smirks and his form begins to change. His shadowy essence swirls around him, transforming him into a monstrous, winged creature. He lunges at Reverse Flash, clawing through the air with incredible strength and speed. However, Reverse Flash vibrates his molecules, allowing the creature's attack to pass harmlessly through him.
REVERSE FLASH (grinning) Impressive, vampire, but your tricks won't work on me!
Now it's Reverse Flash's turn. He taps into the Speed Force, his body vibrating with an intense energy. He moves so fast that he becomes a blur, delivering lightning-fast punches and kicks to Alucard. The vampire's supernatural durability allows him to withstand the onslaught, but the impact weakens him.
ALUCARD (blood dripping from his mouth) You may be fast, but you lack the darkness that fuels me!
Alucard's eyes glow with renewed intensity. He releases the restriction seals on his power, unleashing his true form. Shadows envelop the entire warehouse as Alucard's presence becomes even more ominous. He disappears from sight, leaving Reverse Flash momentarily disoriented.
REVERSE FLASH (concerned) Where did you go?
Alucard's voice echoes through the room, chilling Reverse Flash to the bone.
ALUCARD (whispering) I am everywhere and nowhere, speedster. Your speed won't save you from my darkness.
Reverse Flash frantically looks around, but Alucard's words prove true. Shadows converge on Reverse Flash from all directions, binding him in an inescapable grip. Alucard materializes before him, his eyes glowing with an unholy light.
ALUCARD (grinning) It's time to embrace eternal darkness.
Alucard's monstrous form lunges at Reverse Flash, sinking his fangs deep into his neck. The vampire drains his opponent's life force, feeding on his super-speed and preventing any chance of escape.
REVERSE FLASH (struggling weakly) No... this can't be...
As Reverse Flash's life force fades away, Alucard retracts his fangs, letting the lifeless body of his defeated opponent fall to the ground. The room returns to its eerie silence as Alucard stands victorious.
FADE OUT.
WINNER: Alucard (Hellsing)

Well there it is. Round 2. Chat GPT shows some clear issues here even moreso than last round but hey, that's part of the fun. Sorry if your favorite character was Reverse Flash lmao. Robbed.
Final 4 bracket.

2023.06.10 03:32 haruetty Thins that I would do with you

Firstly, why I’m writing this on Reddit while I could just sent it to you? I wish I could do that without feeling a stupid and pathetic teenager but eh :) Secondly, there’s a list of things that I’d LOVE to do with you, hopefully in a future. . A date!! Eating a pizza . Another date, at the park! I can never forget that day at the park, tho . Cooking together! . Drinking some tea. You make tea better than my mum . Braiding your hair, doing your makeup, dress you up with my goth clothes . Laying in bed with you doing nothing, just cuddles . Kissing you everywhere . Holding your hands while we wait for the bus . Playing with my cat together . Watching anime together . Hugging you every time you feel sad . Laughing at your bad jokes and then kissing you . Doing home chores together and then going out for a walk . Doing trips!! . Going to the theater . Seeing you genuinely smiling . I miss you btw . Taking a walk in the woods . Make a snowman when it’s snowing . Celebrating Xmas together . Going to the beach together . Getting wasted together . Painting together . Playing a song for you with my guitar . Singing for you .Dancing together . Reading you the oracles . Watching silly tv shows while laying on the couch and eating junk food . A bath together . Again more trips, eventually all over the world .washing your hair . Paying taxes together (lol) . Going to the art museum . Going to the cat cafe .eating Indian food . Sleeping with you every night . Going to goodwill and buying decorations for our home .gardening together . Create something together . Looking at you in the eyes . Hugging you tight . Sending you more and more memes . Talking about everything for hours . Doing laundry together .looking at a starry night . Doing grocery together Ok, basically I’m wishing for a life with you. Hopefully I’m not the only one. I love you with all my heart Your dear, M.

2023.06.10 02:40 keroppismacaron /uj if this is the end, I’d like to thank the mods and everyone here

Maybe I’m just overthinking things, but I’ve been super nervous about the whole Reddit API controversy and how it’s going to impact this site I’ve grown attached to. I already know that kpopthoughts is going dark tomorrow morning (mod post here), I know many subreddits will be going dark soon too. I hope Reddit will come to their senses and change the policy, but if not, I’m preparing myself to say goodbye to these communities I found joy in.
I’d just like to come here and say thank you to everyone who made this silly little place what it was, and made me smile. The countless Jopping memes, the SKZ names, the Dahyun in every group jokes, just calling BTS 🐝☕️🍑, it meant something to me by bringing me joy, so I’d like to say thank you.
I hope this isn’t the end, but if it is, goodbye and stay jopping everyone.

2023.06.10 02:06 No_Ocelot_7917 I really like a guy but i feel weird about how much i like him ?

We followed each other on Instagrama year ago due to a common friend (we drifted apart and don't talk anymore) but have never talked or met each other irl , he posts a lot of stories and we're similar in some ways . It started off as me finding him funny then seeing what he looked like and as cheesy as it sounds he has the sweetest smile ever but i never started a conversation because i was in my worst mental state this last year of highschool (I've graduated now ) and also mainly cause i have social anxiety (he does too ) . I'm now debating to hit him up just to chat jsut to make a new friend maybe but I'm guilty of the following
  1. Knowing way too much about his last relationship due to dots i connected from the memes he posted to stalking his ex's accounts comments
  2. Saving basically any and all posts i see that are liked by him because even though i wouldn't like it - i like having more data points about what he likes and the algorithm pushes stuff that's liked by him if i do this
  3. Taking way too fucking long to just write a "hey" i think ? It's been a yeaR (probably -i didn't count ) and i basically view almost all his stories
I feel like a creep for doing all of this and yeah i guess I'm looking for someone to tell me to keep my red flags to myself and try and forget about him . I'd really appreciate all the advice or opinions you might have for me - like i said it's been a year and i desperately need closure on atleast what my next step should be , thank you <3
Update : I'm blocking him and just moving on tooo focusing on my work -case resolved thanks to y'all i should have posted here sooner this was sO fast again thanks

2023.06.10 00:19 shawnwritinginsnow Fan theory: Ikutsuki is Nyarlathotep

DISCLAIMER
I'm just having fun with a bit of theorycrafting. This isn't one of those "ThE tRUtH ReVEaLeD??!?1" things. Also, I'm ignoring the Answer because it retcons basically everything about Nyx and it's poopydumb.
So Nyarlathotep is a really cool character. He's basically Satan, but since Lovecraft created him that means he's both Satan AND a racist. Truly the ultimate evil.
Ikutsuki on the other hand is just kind of a weirdo, and his sudden betrayal feels really outta nowhere. However, what if there was an explanation not only for Ikutsuki but his role in the coming of Nyx?
What if he himself was the ancient evil that is Nyarlathotep, and this is just another elaborate plan to definitively prove Philemon wrong and show that humanity will in fact doom itself?
Let's look at the evidence
  1. Ikutsuki's background has a few holes in it.
Ikutsuki is the director of Gekkoukan High and was a scientist working for the Kirijo Group under Mitsuru's Grandfather, who Ikutsuki claims was attempting to bring about the return of Nyx. Ikutsuki tells us this upon betraying SEES but doesn't elaborate on it at all.
If we're to assume Ikutsuki was originally just the Gekkoukan Director, why on Earth would Mitsuru's Grandfather have been forward with him at ANY point about his intentions to bring about the end of humanity? I don't buy it. I think what's much more likely is that Ikutsuki orchestrated the scenario so he would be brought on as a scientist to study shadows, only to manipulate Mitsuru's Grandfather into assisting in bringing about the Fall.
What's more, Ikutsuki isn't described as a leading scientist on the project or anything to that extent. Sure, he played a pivotal role in providing Kirijo Group with the school as ground zero for testing, but even Yukari's father, one of THE leading researchers and scientists, had no idea what the true purposes of the tests were until it was far too late.
What's even more interesting to me is how apparently Mitsuru's Grandfather did tell his son about the plan to bring about the Fall, but NOT of Ikutsuki's involvement in doing so. Why would be reveal such a colossal plot, but not that particular detail of it? It just doesn't add up.
And how exactly did Ikutsuki go between, from Mitsuru's Father's point of view, being just a scientist to being the very advisor of SEES? Like, I can't be the only one who finds it strange that this dude went from running a school, to helping orchestrate the final death of humanity, to being the very advisor for the ones trying to put a stop to it in the first place. There's only one other character in this franchise able to manipulate people THAT effectively.
  1. Ikutsuki's behavior is odd. Persona isn't exactly a stranger to characters with lacking social skills (just look at Futaba, Yusuke, Akihiko and Yukiko), but Ikutsuki isn't just a bit eccentric, he's borderline oblivious and regularly struggles to grasp the mood of a conversation. Like, I'm pretty sure this dude could describe a complete and utter tragedy in a way that sounds almost jovial.
And maybe it's just me, but there's something about the way he looks at people that just seems off. He has this almost uncanny way of never letting his smile reach his eyes, and he very rarely expresses any other kinds of emotion before the betrayal happens. It's almost as if he's trying to emulate human behavior.
Even in the recording of him on the dorm computer, it's just him vaguely recalling prior story events with no real input while having a laugh thinking up puns. Not only is it strange that he would save this recording to begin with, but I don't think any other character can jump so seamlessly between discussing serious events and cracking up about puns. Even Teddie had more restraint than that.
  1. Ikutsuki claims the Dark Hour and Tartarus appeared as a result of harvesting the shadow's power... So where did the Shadows come from to begin with? And how could they have POSSIBLY known that such things would be born from the Shadows experiments in the first place? It's painfully clear that Ikutsuki knows way more than he ever lets on.
  2. Ikutsuki claims he has the potential but can't actually manifest his Persona. This is extremely suspicious given how long he's been involved in all of this. Nyarlathotep in previous games basically summoned himself as a Persona from the human form, however this didn't require the use of an Evoker which is representative of one's facing death head-on, something Nyarlathotep can't do because he can't die (at least to our knowledge). So were he to summon his Persona, it would cause quite a stir amongst SEES and the Kirijo Group, thus potentially ruining his plan to bring about the Fall.
As for why he didn't summon a Persona or reveal his true self during his betrayal, I'd argue he simply didn't need to, and that going as far as that would be considered very direct interference on his part, thus proving Philemon right. It's not as if he needs to worry about dying or anything, so why bother doing anything so drastic? He felt he had won, so laughing was all he had left to do.
I suppose one could argue that Ikutsuki's very betrayal would be considered direct interference, but all he was doing was hastening the inevitable. Nyx was already going to return. He was just fast-forwarding the process, essentially. Man paid extra for the good WiFi, ya know?
  1. "And then at long last, I will rule over the new world."
Why would Ikutsuki say this if he was just another human that would die upon the return of Nyx? Even Strega knew Nyx's return meant certain death, so what makes Ikutsuki think he'd be ruling over a new world? The only way this like makes sense is if he is in fact the Crawling Chaos itself!
Hope y'all had fun reading this. Again it's really only meant to be a bit of fun. If anything it's just kind of a meme I came up with.

2023.06.10 00:08 FenixHero 36 [M4F] Okanagan, BC, Canada - Back again & still looking for that nerdy love!

I’m back again! Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything except ghosts and people who don’t really know what they want. I can’t believe I have to say this but I am not here to just dirty talk with you so if you are looking to just flirt with someone please move along, I’m looking for a real connection! I have not had excellent luck with love, I’ve been single for a very long time searching for that one who ticks most or even just some of the boxes and I am seriously looking for long-term rest of my-life type thing... So please only reply if you are SERIOUS about dating and know what you want. Where I live everyone is super outdoors oriented and I am quite an introverted homebody who likes video games and cozy nights at home. Online dating apps have been a complete bust due to this, so here I am on Reddit. If you don’t have a good post history on your account you will have to make sure you write a great intro message telling me about yourself or I probably won’t reply. I was almost catfished a while ago so please also send a picture.
Now, what about you? What am I looking for? Well...
It probably seems like I am looking for something a little TOO specific but as I said before you don’t have to check all the boxes. Sometimes you just click with someone and the attraction is just there but I have yet to find that.
I am not interested in anyone from another country! Unless it's pretty close like Seattle, Washington but I primarily want someone in BC, Canada, or at least within 6-8 hours of me like Alberta or something, and you must be willing to travel. I’m just not very good with long-distance unless we are constantly talking and doing things together, so I don't want anything further than that unless you have the resources to visit me often. I don’t really want to leave BC so hopefully if you aren’t within this area then you are willing to relocate in the future. I just want someone who will talk to me every day, send each other memes and music, and do stuff together like best friends would.
This was a lot longer post than I thought and I hope that doesn’t scare people away. I’m just really exhausted with online dating. Thanks for reading my long post! If any of this sounds good to you please feel free to message me and tell me a little about yourself. I’d like you to include a picture too since I’m so cautious now.

2023.06.09 22:35 grave_flower_90 Ty

Ty
I don’t remember the last time I felt this kind of heartbreak. Maybe it’s because I usually am the one to leave before the other person gets a chance to leave me. Either way, I am frustrated at the fact that I am still hurting over you. We met here on Reddit months ago, having no idea then, that I would fall so in love with a stranger I would probably never meet. Things escalated quickly from chatting, to sending pics, to exchanging social media, to FaceTiming every day. We knew how wrong it was. We knew we were both married. But the instant bond we formed was so strong and felt so right, I was walking on clouds every day just happy to be alive and to have someone to give that extra special attention that we both craved. You made me smile and laugh and made me feel so beautiful and desirable. The urge to reach through my phone screen and kiss your beautifully perfect face was unbearable. When you would send me those fucking hot videos of you and your delicious body, it would send me to another world, and I would be left drooling like a rabid animal just hungry to devour you. I was never even into guys like you before; the muscular, perfect-looking, clean-cut military type. But watching you undress out of that camo uniform awakened a primal urge within me. I never thought someone so fine would ever want anything to do with a girl like me. And the way you spoke to me, so sweetly, and wanting to know everything about me and my life, remembering all the little details like the names of my cats and my daily routines. It was so easy to fall in love with you. You warned me from the beginning that this would eventually have to end and that it would hurt. But I didn’t want to believe it. I thought I could somehow change the trajectory. Even when I felt you slowly drifting away, I still held onto hope. I tried to remain patient and distract myself so that I could prove to you that I could give you space if that was what you needed. You told me that you would be returning home to your wife and kids at the end of may for a month and wouldn’t be able to talk to me anymore but you never even took the time to say goodbye. I wasn’t ready. I don’t know if I ever could have been ready honestly. And maybe that’s why you left the way you did. You knew I wouldn’t be able to say goodbye and stick to it. You blocked me in every way possible. I don’t know if you read the messages I tried to send you, cursing you for breaking my heart so deeply, lying to myself by saying that I never wanted to talk to you again. I just thought we had more time and I wish I had known that the last time we FaceTimed on may 5th would be the last time I would see your face and laugh with you and tell each other I love you. I feel like a fucking idiot for getting wrapped up in this situation knowing it was never going to end well. But I will never regret knowing you. I miss you all the time and I think about you every single day. I have so many things I want to tell you, songs I want to send you, memes I know you would laugh at, feelings and thoughts only you would understand. I wish I could call you but I know I can’t and it’s the most frustrating thing. I hope that when you go back to base, maybe we can reconnect. Even though I know it’s not good for me, I don’t care. Im willing to make the same mistake again if it means I get to spend more time with you. I love you so much, Ty. You’re always in my heart ♥️-A

2023.06.09 21:56 npc-69420 [Excerpt: The Eye of Medusa] The secrets of the Iron Hands and their cold grudge against the Raven Guard

CONTEXT: The Iron Hands can simulate any recorded memory of past Iron Hands. This is used for training, intelligence and so on.
Stronos is an Iron Hands Marine. He is often disliked and mistrusted by his comrades due to his reluctance to embrace the mantra of the flesh being weak. Although he has significant augmentations himself, something about the Iron Hands' cold adherence to algorithms in battle and decision making bothers him.
As Stronos continues to question the doctrines and practices of his chapter, he begins to unravel the secrets of the Iron Hands which make the Dark Angels' internal politics look like children's play.
PART 1: THE CONCLAVE: Iron Father Kristos is a controversial, but increasingly powerful figure in the Iron Hands. His rise to power came with his crushing of a WAAAGH, but the specifics of that campaign are simultaneously very controversial & secretive.
His actions were so controversial, a conclave was created by Kristos to represent him to the Iron Council. Despite the controversy he creates, Kristos is incredibly powerful both as an individual and a commander.
“Blessings and benedictions of Mars.’ Velt smiled graciously. ‘Your criticisms are noted and welcomed–’ the scratching of meme-quill on parchment recorded his contrition for the future historians ‘–and I will be improved for the recognition of my prior failings.’
‘See to it,’ Verrox grumbled.
‘I will, Iron Father. As you know, the Iron Council demands the uprising be crushed immediately and utterly. To the last soul. Word of the Iron Hands’ failure to prevent insurrection within their own system limits cannot be allowed to spread. It will draw unwelcome attention at a difficult time, when the conclave of Kristos continues to engender discord within.’
‘I do not care what others think.’
‘What you will not have heard in open council,’ Velt went on, ‘is that Warleader Kristos himself has demanded the Mechanicus resolve this insurrection.’
‘Former warleader,’ said Verrox. ‘The Iron Fathers have chosen not to elevate one of our number to lead. Not since the debacle on Columnus.’
‘Putative,’ Quorus reprimanded the Iron Father. ‘The morality of Iron Father Kristos’ methodology remains in dispute. That is the entire basis of the conclave. He would undoubtedly emphasise that the Weirdwaaagh was crushed with minimal losses.”
So we can glimpse from conversations about him that Kristos is both disliked and respected. Guymer does an excellent job of portraying Kristos as someone worthy of this reputation, but most noteworthy is the mention of the Weirdwaaagh that he crushed.
Why is it so controversial? Stronos does not actively seek out the truth but it is eventually given to him.
PART 2: DISCORD BETWEEN IRON FATHERS: In this section, Stronos is shaken after learning a member of the Raven Guard was able to sneak around him undetected. He goes to the tech priests for a check-up and an upgrade, but encounters Tubriik Ares, an Iron Father and a Dreadnought.
“Is Stronos injured?’
Stronos considered silence, but decided that he could keep nothing from the ancient. ‘I am defective. I seek to rectify that.’
‘How so?’
‘The Raven’s son proved himself my superior. I must improve and adapt.’
‘Improve and adapt.’ Ares’ vocabularisers rumbled with scorn. ‘We recall a time when Iron Hands were less like Kristos and more like Kardan Stronos. They were ruthless, yes, but adaptable, not slaves to calculus.”
The calculus is a complex, algorithmic system that dictates every part of a battle to the Iron Hands. Most Iron Hands will follow the calculus to the letter during a battle, a practice that Stronos himself dislikes but is pushed for very strongly by Kristos and his conclave.
Interestingly, Ares, a Dreadnought and an Iron Father, dislikes the modern Iron Hands' reverence of it.
“The Kristosian question makes all matters subject to doubt,’ Stronos said to Ares, voice low. ‘All will be as it once was once the arguments are resolved.’
Ares turned from the Apothecary to him. His emptiness seemed for a moment… sorrowful. ‘Kardan Stronos speaks of the arguments, but what does he know of the question, for there is only one?’
Stronos made to formulate an answer, only to realise he had none. Often he had railed against the waste of energy that the conclave brought on the Iron Council, but had never found the time to learn for himself what, in effect, it was all for. He shook his head honestly. He had been built to be a war machine. This round voyage to Medusa was the first time since his novitiation that he had not been either in the thick of a warzone or in transit from one to another.”
Ares' sorrow is a noteworthy reaction. A sign that not all Iron Hands condone the actions of Kristos.
“I know little of Kristos beyond his roll of honours,’ said Stronos, stung. ‘I know that he was once considered an exemplar of the Iron Creed.’
‘As it is now interpreted for you, perhaps.’
‘What do you mean by that?’ demanded Haas [the Apothecary working on Stronos].
Ares did not answer directly. ‘It began on Columnus,’ he said.
‘Everyone knows that,’ Haas said, dismissively, then picked up a spoon-headed implement from his medicae trolley and bent towards Stronos.
‘And what happened there to cause such crisis?’ Ares countered.
Stronos couldn’t answer. He looked to Haas. The Apothecary let out a frustrated sigh and said nothing, focusing instead on Stronos’ eye. He had no answer either.”
PART 3: THE CALCULUS: To show him the truth, Ares takes Stronos to the Simulus. With the Simulus, Stronos can experience the memories of anyone at the event - the Simulus uses complex algorithms and calculations to accurately simulate the POV of anyone at a recorded event, even if the perspective of that individual is not recorded in data.
The simulus jumps to the planet Columnus where the Raven Guard and the Iron Hands are fighting an Ork Waaagh together. Stronos sees the events from the perspective of Captain Stenn
Stronos canted, and though he was unconscious of his physical body he could somehow feel that he spoke with a strained jaw and through gritted teeth.
He had a bitter, illogical loathing for the descendants of Corax that he could not explain. Having just experienced a small part of Orvid Stenn’s existence, he felt that he should feel greater empathy for his brother Space Marine, but he did not. What he felt was greater ambivalence, as though along with his body he had been dissociated from everything of his own experience that could have made him care. He was not Orvid Stenn, and the dissonant notion arose that he might equally not be Kardan Stronos. He was nobody, and anybody had the potential to be him.
He was simulus – the collective.”
...
“The Raven Guard were spread along the length of the thigh-height rockcrete wall that demarcated the bombed-out lot of haulage depot 764 from the adjoining premises. It wasn’t much, but it was something. With the exception of some minor damage, it had weathered the destruction of the outer defences relatively intact, a credit to the Administratum clerk that had overseen its construction, and ran roughly parallel to where the curtain wall had been until ten minutes before.”
After being driven back by the Orks, the Imperial forces realize that the Waaagh is being led by a warpboss who is granting the orks unnatural bravery and fierceness. The Raven Guard hold the front line alongside mortal troops.
“He had heard in dispatches of the psychic energies that flowed through their Gargants – weapon grids, shields and piercing uncanny augurs – and that brought their lumpen drop ships to ground still. He had heard too of the court of warpheads with which the self-styled warpboss, Zagdakka, surrounded himself, and had lost two squads of his most experienced Scouts in a failed attempt at thinning their “numbers. He saw now with his own eyes the weird energy that flowed through these greenskins in their battle-madness like some manner of psychic connective tissue, the brawn and sinew of some gestalt ork that drove them unto death with a single, overriding will. The fire discipline of the Raven Guard and their mortal allies slaughtered greenskins every minute by the hundred, but they didn’t seem to care, hurling themselves recklessly against the Imperial guns as though possessed.
Not that the blasted Iron Hands would allow for the slightest deviation from their precious calculus. Stenn sneered, his pistol emitting a final hiss as coolant jets sprayed from the weapon’s muzzle and the vents locked. He thumbed off the safety and selected rapid fire.
He could teach the Iron Hands a thing or two about logic.
‘Kristos, you honourless shell, I’m talking to you.’ He raged into the vox as he seared the heaving mass of orks with plasma. Too soon, heat warnings blinked red on the pistol’s side and he was forced to flick back to vent. ‘I need reinforcements and I need them now. Now, Kristos! I want a creeping artillery barrage walking outwards from the outer “wall over the southern highway and I want aeronautica backup. Kristos!”
As the Raven Guard fight tooth and nail, Captain Stenn and the rest of the Raven Guard realize the Iron Hands are standing behind them but not engaging.
“A squad of Iron Hands Centurions, almost as well camouflaged as the Raven Guard themselves in their huge black warsuits and perfect stillness. Their hurricane bolters were unloaded and pointed at the ground or at walls, whichever direction they had happened to be facing when the strange malaise of inaction had taken them. Stenn regarded them with fury. The few Iron Hands he had seen had been that way, ever since the unexpected psychic onslaught had levelled the south wall outright. At first he had wondered if it was a secondary effect of Zagdakka’s powers, but the Raven Guard and their mortal allies were unaffected. Yavid had a replacement eye as well as a bionic arm and he remained functional, as did the crew interfaces of their vehicles. As did the damned skitarii.”
...
“The Centurions moved!
There they were, silent as the blown-out repair shops through which they came, ghosts of the machine bound forever to a doomed cycle of destruction and repair. The firepower of the Centurions alone would have ripped a hole into the ork horde as wide as the gates of the Ravenspire, but six full squads of Tactical Marines also moved up through the rubble behind them. They spread out, taking fire-positions just beyond the chokepoint where Stenn’s efforts held the orks at bay. What were they waiting for? He saw a pair of hellfire Dreadnoughts lumbering into position either side of the smaller Centurions, and then heard the weary collapse of a pockmarked stretch of rockcrete as the glacis plate of a Redeemer pattern Land Raider drove through it. Its sponson flamestorm cannons traversed to track the flows of the ork horde, liquid promethium dribbling to the rubble floor.
Stenn cursed as he punched his lightning claw through a charging ork’s ribs. Never expect an Iron Hand to commit until he was good and ready.”
...
“What are you waiting for?’ He shot an ork in the face as it made to barrel towards Yavid, and found himself in the sights of the nearest Iron Hands squad. They had bolters locked and aimed, but for some reason held their fire. Their eye slits shone an ephemeral white, but they could have been decoy suits for all the urgency they showed. ‘Shoot, curse you!’
A horrible sense of premonition grew under his skin like a worm. Stenn looked over his shoulder and >> RESTRICTED DATA >>
The simulus is interrupted and Stronos learns from Ares that these events have been hidden from normal viewers. However, the data cannot be falsified even by Iron Fathers so Ares and Stronos continue watching.
We continue watching the Raven Guard struggle against the Warpwaaagh as the Raven Guard line begins to fall. Captain Stenn valiantly holds the line but warp powered orks are chipping away at the Raven Guard. He recognizes that the Iron Hands are holding back because of their calculus, but does not anticipate the final tactic the calculus commands.
“Stenn gave a grunt of pain as psychic fingers tightened around him and squeezed. ‘Damn you >> RESTRICTED DATA >> Just kill me yourself.’ His armour cracked like a sea-crustacean’s shell, blood spurting from ruptured seals as his body was crushed. He screamed, genhanced anatomy fighting a battle with pain that had been stacked well against it from the outset. ‘Emperor forgive you!’
With every scrap of conscious thought locked away in hardened centres of his brain structure he cursed the Iron Hands. He cursed the casual brutality, the bare calculation of risk versus reward. His last thoughts before those final redoubts succumbed to braindeath were not of the pain, nor of his brother Raven Guard that fell to the mind-blasts of the warpboss’ retinue, nor even of the Iron Hands themselves as they finally descended on the fray. With the enemy leaders bottled up with the last of the Raven Guard, the Iron Hands opened fire. Tactical Marines, Centurions, Land Raiders, each warrior a cog in a war machine that sprayed fire to a perfectly choreographed maelstrom that consumed Warpboss Zagdakka, his retinue, the Raven Guard, and Stenn himself.
But he was not thinking about that. He was thinking about Dawnbreak.
Because Iron Hands did not make mistakes.
>>> TERMINATING SIMULUS.”
TL;DR The Raven Guard and Iron Hands are defending against a Warpwaaagh. In the final, climactic battle, the Iron Hands under the command of Kristos and the calculus, determine that the most efficient way to win the battle was to use the RG and IG as human shields, and only fire once the Warpboss was in range. Kristos rises to infamy because of his methods, which resulted in minimal losses for the IH.
In part, this incident is linked to an innate hatred of the Raven Guard that many Iron Hands have. However, as implied when Stronos first enters the Simulus, it's suggested that this hatred has been programmed into the Iron Hands' calculus.
The calculus itself isn't unlike incredibly important algorithms that exist in companies today. Any changes require a collective vote, and the entities that have worked on it include Iron Fathers and important tech priests. This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of conspiracies. If you want to find out how the Iron Hands are actually way worse than the Dark Angels in terms of secret circles and internal politics, I highly recommend Guymer's books.
Stronos is one of the most complex Space Marine protagonists I've read. He believes in many of the Iron Hands' tenets, yet cannot help but question aspects that the rest of his peers readily accept. It's an interesting look at how the dogmatic attitudes of the Space Marines often prime them for corruption as much as it protects them.
