The queens walk back into the werkroom after
Akashia's elimination.
Processing img e8rq6hr8834b1... Orion talks about entering the werkroom and how the tension between
Robbie and
Rock can be felt after their disagreement in the previous Untucked.
The queens then all gather around and
Akashia's mirror message as
Elliott reads it to the group before cleaning the mirror.
Jan mentions to
Elliott that she thinks she did a really great job in the lip sync to which
Elliott mentions that she really thought that it should've been
Rock up for elimination and not her.
Elliott goes on to say that she felt that
Rock was a weaker team leader and that should've accounted for something.
Robbie jumps in again to mention that she said all that she needed to say to
Rock in Untucked but the fact remains that the judges loved her idea and that if
Rock stepped it up more that their ad would've been successful.
Rock rolls her eyes before walking away saying that she is more than ready to send them all home.

Monica laughs and says that she hopes the other girls continue being distracted by one another and take each other out.
The queens start to separate and go through their de-dragging processes.
Jade shares with
Kerri and
Monica how she really wants to land in the top for a challenge this coming week but it seems the judges haven't been featuring her so far.
Monica tells her that her only goal is to continue to show the growth from her earlier season so that she can show that she is ready for the crown.
Kerri agrees and tells
Jade that she should focus on doing her best and showing the judges a range of talents and that will take her to the end.
THE NEXT DAY The queens reenter the werkroom and talk about what they think will be coming their way.

Kandy talks about how she thinks its still too early to call a front runner and that makes her want to win a challenge even more.
The queens all gather around the table and discuss the challenges so far.
Kerri points out that each of the challenges have been won by different queens:
Orion, Marcia, and
Jaymes and goes on to say that she will be adding her name to the list with the coming week.
Kandy then asks the group if there was anyone else that could've won the last challenge and what people's thoughts are about that.
Jaymes mentions that she really thought that
Robbie did a good job and we see
Rock roll her eyes about this. Just then they then hear the siren announcing their
RuMail.
Following
Ru's message,
RuPaul enters the werkroom.
Processing img x489dxb2834b1... Ru tells the girls about the mini challenge. She explains that the queens will need to perfect the art of the celebrity photobomb!
Ru goes on to say that the girls will get into quick drag and insert themselves into famous shots. She then sends the queens to get into quick drag. One by one the queens all arrive for their photoshoots. Each of them are shown in their ridiculous quick drag posing in scenarios. After all the queens have performed

Following this,
RuPaul tells the queens about their next maxi challenge. She talks about how climate change is impacting the ice caps and what they will do is throw a ball!
Ru tells them that they will be competing in
The Last Ball on Earth! Ru tells them that they will need to serve three looks:
-
Alaskan Winter Realness a fun in the sun look -
Miami Summer Realness something furry to combat the freezing temperatures -
Martian Eleganza Extravaganza a glamour couture look that will slay on their new home planet!

Ru then leaves the teams to start preparing for their runway presentations.
PREPARATIONS FOR MAIN CHALLENGE When
Ru leaves the werkroom, the queens all gather their materials for their constructed look and begin creating their garments.
We see
Kandy and
Kerri working at a station near each other as they begin making their looks.
Kerri talks to
Kandy about how she knows she is going to look great but that she really wants to wow the judges with the look that she creates. She explains to
Kandy the look that she has planned and
Kandy asks her how she is going to bring space into it.
Kerri gets a little stumbled up with this question and it makes
Kandy crack up.
Kandy warns her that she doesn't want
Kerri to go home and that she thinks she should make sure that she is making something that fits the brief.
https://preview.redd.it/y9vmni6ni35b1.png?width=366&format=png&auto=webp&s=9921fcf4199d9b964dc97564d95da06fb8bef0cf In her confessional,
Kerri talks about how she knows that there is some truth to what
Kandy is saying but that she still feels like she should play to her strengths and do what would look good on her.
On the other side of the werkroom, we see
Monica chatting with
Jan as they work on their constructions.
Jan shares with
Monica her concerns with her safe placements each week. She tells
Monica that she knows that it is still early on in the competition but that she really wants to impress with what she is creating this week.
Monica tells her that this is what is the hardest part of the competition, because all the girls are gunning for the attention of the judges and they will only hone in on one of them.
Rock is shown feverishly working on her look on her own. We see many of the queens looking on when she continues to add more and more accessories to the look.
https://preview.redd.it/nocxixboi35b1.png?width=366&format=png&auto=webp&s=f3eded3afa7a048ee40b44242b03b37e140e4a20 Marcia mentions that she can't help but cringe while she watches because it's almost like she wants her look to get worse with each thing she adds to it.
Orion tries to talk to
Rock to give her feedback about how her look is turning out.
Rock doubles down and says that she thinks it really speaks to the theme of the category and that she wants the look to be out of this world.
Orion looks worried but allows
Rock to continue down her path.
Just then,
Ru re-enters the werkroom for her walkthroughs with the queens. She is shown talking with
Elliott, Robbie, Jaymes, and
Jade in direct conversations. In her conversation with
Elliott, Ru brings up how her previous construction went over well. She adds that
Elliott was just in the bottom two and asks if
Elliott feels that will impact her performance with this challenge.
Elliott shares that she feels good going into this challenge because she knows that she can create a cohesive look and has some good ideas for where to go with her Martian look.
https://preview.redd.it/wbnijtfui35b1.png?width=372&format=png&auto=webp&s=d60df3c36f09221a2b8d81664181724ba1ffd4b3 In her confessional,
Elliott shares that she thinks if the other queens are counting her out just because she was in the bottom two last week that they will be making a mistake.
Ru then moves on to chat with
Robbie about the upcoming challenge.
Robbie shows her where she is so far with her design and
Ru is unimpressed.
Ru goes on to tell her that the other girls are going to be gunning for the top spot in each of the challenges and that she thinks that what
Robbie is doing isn't something that will stand out and that she really wants her to put her best foot forward with the challenge.
Ru leaves her by stating that her last construction challenge landed her in the bottom three and that she really wants to see growth from that challenge in regard to what she does with this ball.
Robbie tells her that she is going to take that into account and really not hold anything back.
Ru moves on to chat with
Jaymes. In their conversation,
Ru revisits her great performance in the previous challenge and asks
Jaymes if she feels any pressure to keep up the momentum.
Jaymes jokes about how she is in a constant state of fight or flight and goes on to joke around and makes
Ru cackle.
Jaymes then mentions that she has always created looks for herself so she feels like she can do something really strong with this challenge and shares some of her ideas with
Ru. Ru tells her that she is really looking forward to seeing what more
Jaymes will do, especially in this challenge.
Ru is finally shown chatting with
Jade about this challenge.
Ru tells
Jade that she hasn't been in the top so far and asks her what she plans to do with this challenge to change that.
Jade tells her that it is something that she has been thinking about and that she knows it is still early in the competition but that she is planning to really wow the judges this week.
Ru asks her specifically how she plans to do this, to which
Jade doesn't really have an answer.
Ru tells her that she wants her to not get too in her head and that when she realized how talented she is then everything else will fall into place.
https://preview.redd.it/f675b28vi35b1.png?width=364&format=png&auto=webp&s=c1a5ebc967c6a63bf3990d63180147741f3bc1a2 In her confessional,
Jade mentions that she can't help but really focus on slaying the challenge and that she won't apologize for that.
As the queens are getting ready for the main stage presentations,
Robbie and
Rock have another disagreement after
Kandy asks the group how they all feel about the looks that they have created.
Robbie mentions that there is a clear look where a queen doesn't understand the need to edit and makes eyes over towards
Rock. When
Rock responds,
Robbie just mentions that she is being real and telling her what everyone else is thinking.
ON THE MAIN STAGE RuPaul takes to the runway and welcomes everyone to the main stage and introduces the guest judges
Logan Browning and
Tisha Campbell-Martin. She explains that for this week's challenge the queens were tasked with turning out three looks for the
Last Ball on Earth!

We see a lot of body looks with the queens as they show off their swimsuits. We see particularly strong looks in this category from
Kandy, Monica, Kerri, Jaymes, and
Orion.
MIAMI SUMMER REALNESS RUNWAY The queens then turn the corners in their Miami Summer looks. The queens all bundle up with their furry winter-themed looks. We see particularly strong looks from
Monica, Jan, Kerri, Jaymes, and
Orion.
MARTIAN ELEGANZA EXTRAVAGANZA RUNWAY The queens all walk the runway in their galactic-inspired constructed looks.

Kandy Muse, Marcia Marcia Marcia, Jan, Kerri Colby and
Elliott with 2 Ts are all safe and that they may return backstage to untuck.
The critiques then begin.
https://preview.redd.it/x41fpf4qj35b1.jpg?width=2547&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0e508bc7b07008f39f58bd2197e890176f0383a9 Michelle starts with
Monica and tells her that she really stepped up this week. She tells her that unlike the other queens she felt that she had some of the biggest makeup changes with her looks and that each of her looks were well fitted and proved her strong taste level.
Logan Browning agrees and tells her that she thinks she is so pretty to look at and that she loved watching what she did on the runway.
Ross moves on to
Rock and tells her that he had higher hopes for what she was going to bring to the runway. He tells her that she is such an imaginative queen but that each of her looks were too predictable and none of them were actually well fitted. He goes on to add that her final look seemed to be all over the place and needed to be edited.
Logan Browning tells her that she was confused with her final look because she didn't see it as Martian and that there were just too many pieces to it.
Michelle then talks to
Jaymes and tells her she was her favorite of the night. She tells her that she can tell that
Jaymes gets deep into character when she hits the runway and she connected with the characters that she displayed on top of the fact that the looks were all homeruns.
Tisha Campbell-Martin agrees and adds that she thinks that she knows who she is as a queen and definitely knows how to portray it through a look and that she loved everything she did on the runway.
Ross then talks with
Robbie and tells her that she wasn't at the top of her game with this challenge. He adds that her constructed look was a safe thought that wasn't even well made.
Logan Browning tells her that she had an issue with the wigs that she chose to wear. She gives her feedback to think about her look from the heel of her shoe all the way to the wig she puts on her head.
Ross tells
Orion that he loves the way she styles her looks and that the other girls should take note of this. He tells her that each of her runway looks are a story and that all he wants to do is read it.
Tisha Campbell-Martin gushes over how beautiful she thinks
Orion is. She goes on to tell her that she couldn't take her eyes off of her and that she thinks that the look she made was so well tailored that it almost looks bought.
Michelle ends the critiques with
Jade and tells her she really wanted to enjoy her runways but that there was a something missing from each of them. She goes on to say that she doesn't want her to fade into the background but that she just didn't stack up to her competitors this week for her.
Tisha Campbell-Martin tells her that she agrees with
Michelle in that she didn't find
Jade to be particularly memorable and that if she wants to be a superstar she is going to have to wear her talent on her sleeve and that she didn't see her doing that tonight.
Ru then sends the queens to the back while the judges deliberate.

RuPaul tells
Monica and
Orion that they both did a great job as well and that all three queens can step to the back.
She then speaks to
Rock, Jade and
Robbie.
She announces that
Jade is safe. She thanks the judges and walks to the back to join the other queens.
Robbie Turner and
Rock M Sakura are in the bottom two and up for elimination. Both queens look determinedly towards the judges.
Processing img 52dazy6b524b1...
Processing img 97sox1k7524b1... Rock mentions that she is devastated she is up for elimination but that if there was anyone that she wanted to send home it would be
Robbie.
Processing img hwjdq2k6524b1... Robbie states that it is likely karma that brought her to be up against
Rock in this lip sync but that won't end well for
Rock because she isn't going anywhere.
RuPaul announces that the time has come for them to lip sync for their lives. They had to prepare a lip-sync performance to the song
Pound the Alarm by Nicki Minaj.
Good luck and don't FUCK it up!
The lip-sync is entertaining. Both queens put their frustrations with one another into their performance and really turn up the heat.
Rock goes between being comedic in her performance to being sexy and fierce.
Robbie builds with the energy of the song and gets a lot of laughs from her interpretation of the song.
Rock's garment is shedding pieces all over the stage and
Robbie uses it as a gag in her performance.
The lip sync ends and
RuPaul announces...
Robbie Turner... shantay you stay
Rock M Sakura... sashay away
The queens clap for
Rock as she departs the main stage and delivers her exit line.

2023.06.10 06:10 finlefree Update: I(46m) got into a discussion with my gf(45f) that led to a huge fight. Now she says if I don't change the way I think she's gone
Here he the original post for context:
https://www.reddit.com/amiwrong/comments/13q0yxq/i_46m_got_into_a_discussion_with_my_gf_45f_that/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button I got so many supportive comments on the original post and I can't begin to tell you all what it meant to me. Believe it or not it made the break up a little less traumatic knowing I had a few thousand people behind me (even if they were all strangers). So thank you to all of you. I also got quite a few requests for updates and a lot has happened in the last few weeks since the brake up so I thought I would share for those who care to know.
So the gf (now "ex" gf which she will be referred to as from this point on) was calling me constantly over the next week. It was bordering on harassment. She would apologize over and over and say that she loved me and no longer felt like I raped her and she just wanted to be with me again, etc. I told her repeatedly that while I wished her no ill will, I just felt like we weren't meant to be and she would be better off finding someone less rapey than me. (ok I was harboring a little resentment that may have come off a tad immature at times).
At one point I told my daughter (28f and not from the ex) everything about the break up and what she said about me raping her at the wedding.
If I may digress a little for just a moment, I would like to explain. My daughter was born when I was 17. I pretty much raised her on my own. Her mom was very flakey and was rarely around. But in all fairness, she was only 18 so she was just young and not ready for a child. Not that I was anymore ready, but I knew somebody had to be the parent. So I think because we were so close in age, my daughter and I have a very close bond. We pretty much tell each other everything and no subject is off limits. For example, I was the first person she told when she gave her 1st blow job and then again when she lost her virginity. How many daughters do that?
Because we are so close, my daughter has always been very protective of me. I didn't introduce her to most of the women I dated while she was growing up but the couple that became serious relationships she met and let's just say she wasn't very warm and welcoming to these women. But she was older when I got with my ex and while my daughter was not the most friendly to her upon meeting her, eventually they became pretty tight.
So after telling my daughter all about it (in hindsite it may have not been the smartest move I've ever made) she became so angry that she called my ex (I didn't know she did this nor did I condone it. But how could I be angry with her for standing up for her old man?) She offered to arrange my ex's face for cheaper than a plastic surgeon would and also to remove any teeth to prevent any toothaches she may get in the future. Although she wasn't quite that polite about it if you smell what I'm stepping in.
So my kid and I were sitting on my couch having a couple beers and shooting the shit when the cops knocked on my door. The ex called them and reported my daughter for threatening her. They charged her with a misdemeanor for the threats but they didn't arrest her or put her in jail. Needless to say she wanted to make a visit to my ex after that but I was able to talk a little sense into her.
Later that same night I got another call from my ex with more of the crying and the "I'm sorries" and she wanted to just forget everything that has happened and she no longer feels like I raped her and she just wanted us to be together again. She asked if she could come over to talk and she alluded to us having sex, I guess thinking I am just a dumb ass man and the offer of sex would have me forget that she accused me of rape and tried to have my daughter arrested. (And yes I know my kid should not have threatened her but I don't care. That's my kid and right or wrong I've always got her back).
I told the ex that I was not interested in talking nor was I ever going to be sticking my dick in any of her holes ever again. (I'm sorry for the crudeness but that's the way I talk in real life and especially when I'm angry). I asked her to please stop calling me and just let me live my life in peace.
I hoped that would be the end of it but as we all know, hope springs eternal but was not to be my luck. At about 3 am I awoke to something that normally I quite enjoyed waking up to but this night I was not pleased. She had broke into my pad (well she didn't really break in. I forgot to get her key from her when she moved out so she let herself in) and knowing that I always sleep naked, she came into my room and was sucking my dick.
Like I said, normally that would have been awesome but this time I was infuriated. I started screaming at her to get the fuck out of my house before I call the cops on her like she did my daughter. It was actually the closest I've ever come to hitting a woman. I'm proud to say that I was able to hold my composure enough to keep myself from doing it as I have taught my daughter from the time she was 5 years old that she NEVER allows a man to put his hands on her more than once. If a man ever hits her she should find away to get away from him and come find me and I'll take care of it from there. So I could never allow myself to be the one to hit a woman. I would never want my kid to think I was a hypocrite and that is the only reason she didn't get punched in her teeth.
She started crying and begging me to please talk to her so I'm ashamed to say I did grab her by the arm and walk her out of my room to the front door only to find some friend of hers sitting on my couch. I guess the ex's car was not running so she got a ride from this friend. So now I'm standing in my living room, stark naked, yelling for them to get the fuck out of my house. Which woke up my daughter, who was sleeping in the spare room because she had too much to drink and I didn't want her driving.
My daughter comes out of the room with a baseball bat because she didn't know who I was yelling at and she thought we were getting robbed. When she saw who I was yelling at she actually tried going after the ex and her friend but I was able to stop her and got her to go into the bedroom so as to not have to see her old man in that state. I ordered my ex to get the fuck out and told her I better never hear from her again.
Next morning I have off from work so my daughter and I are eating breakfast and talking about going to get new locks for my house later when I get a knock at my door. My daughter answered it and low and behold it is 2 detectives. My ex apparently was now trying to have me arrested for raping her. I couldn't believe it. Well, I guess I could believe it, but it was still a shock none the less.
They said that she had called and told them she wanted to report me that I raped her and that it was regarding an incident in a hotel room after attending a wedding and they were there to ask me some questions.
Now believe me when I tell you that I'm not a man that just readily cries in front of people, much less total strangers. But for some reason that I couldn't explain, I just started crying. I wasn't balling like a little girl or anything but there were for sure tears in my eyes, and I was unable to hold them back. Being about as embarrassed and ashamed as a man can be I excused myself to the bathroom. I pulled myself together and washed my face. I gave myself a stern talking to about crying like a pussy in front of total strangers. And I started heading back out to the living room. I got as far as the hallway when I heard my daughter, half yelling, obviously crying herself, telling the detectives basically what a bitch my ex is and that I didn't rape her that we were just drunk and had sex and it was my ex that initiated it in the first place.
I walked back into the living room, tears and blubbering behind me and told my kid that I would handle my business from here and to please excuse herself to the bedroom.
Once she had left the room the female detective asked me if that was really what had happened and I told her it was. They thanked me for my time and they left. A few hours later my phone rings and it is the same female detective. She told me that they went to my ex's and asked her to go further into detail about what happened. They asked her were we both drinking and she admitted that we were. They asked her had I forced myself on her while she told me no and surprisingly she told them no, that she was in fact the one who initiated the sex. The detective then asked her if she was the one that initiated it then how exactly was it that she was feeling like I raped her. She said that she was drunk and a woman cannot consent to sex while she is drunk so if a man has sex with her then that is rape.
The detective said she had to keep herself from laughing out loud. She then told my ex that she didn't know where she was getting her info from but she explained that it is illegal for somebody to have sex with another person if that person is so intoxicated that they are unconscious, or just unable to effectively consent or deny consent. She said that what happened between her and I was nothing more than two people having consensual drunk sex and if she wanted to be technical about it, since my ex is the one that initiated the sex, consent wouldn't even fall to her. It would fall to me and so if anybody was committing rape in that situation it would have been her, not me. But the fact is nobody raped anyone.
Then the detective said my ex got huffy and asked her how could she possibly have been the one committing rape since not only was I the man, but I had an erection and a man cannot be considered raped if he has an erection during the act .
The detective told her that she wasn't sure where my ex was getting her information from, but that she was wrong in every thing that she was saying and that she should be a little more careful about making police reports and spouting off what essentially equates to nonsense because she could have done some serious damage to somebody else's life under the right circumstances.
I cannot tell you how wonderful it was to hear all that stuff that this detective was telling me. I really wish I could have been there to see my ex's face when she was informed of all this, although I know that is just childish and petty on my part.
Then the detective said something else that I was not expecting. She told me that my daughter had told her about the night before when I woke up to the ex sucking my dick. She asked me if it was true and I said yes. The detective told me that if I wanted to, I could report that as a sexual assault and she would be arrested. They would probably just release her on her own recognizance, but she would still have to go to court and if found guilty she would have to register as a sex offender.
I couldn't believe it. I really thought about it, but I have no desire to ruin my ex's life. I just want her out of mine. But you can bet I had fun telling my ex what the detective told me and I used it to tell my ex if she ever contacts me again that I would do it. And also, she needed to have the charges on my kid dropped. But if she did that, had the charges dropped and then never contacted me again, I would not report her for sexual assault. She agreed. And I can't be happier .

- Learn about the future of media and code — the front-end and backend of the internet — so you can focus your efforts.
- Understand digital leverage, distribution, no-code tools, and digital assets so you can take part in the mental & financial wealth transfer.
Phase 1) Creating A Meaningful Niche Every day I hear people going on and on about trying to find their niche.I also hear people talking about how they don’t know how to combine what they love talking about with what will sell. You already have the answer. You just don’t have the clarity. - Develop a long-term strategy to create your own niche — meaning you don’t have to worry about your “competition” playing status games.
- Discover your life’s work, curiosities, and obsessions. I see too many people that are uncertain about this for years.
- Cultivate and turn your vision, goals, and values into a brand that attracts an audience you love interacting with (and that will buy from you, and only you).
Phase 2) Content Strategy There is one thing that separates those who make it in the digital economy and those who don’t.It’s the quality, articulation, and perceived originality of their content. The content you post has to make sense to the people you attract.Everyone has a different voice and tone that they resonate with. That they are congruent with and trust. It has to change their thought patterns or behavior — that’s what makes you memorable. That’s what separates you from the sea of people posting surface-level copy-cat style posts.Example and putting my money where my mouth is: - Become an expert-level speaker or writer on the topics you care about.
- Never run out of content ideas for your posts or promotions (without using content templates — that’s how you stay a commodity).
- Create posts, blogs, tweets, images, and videos that resonate with other’s on a deep level. People will actually ask you how you got so good at what you do.
- Separate yourself from the ocean of B-tier creators that struggle to sell their products, services, andhave their ideas stick in the head of their audience.
- Implement our Epistemic Research Method — which is just a fancy way of saying scientific research method… but it’s for researching your mind to craft brilliant content and product ideas.
Phase 3) Crafting Your Offer Most people are sitting on a goldmine of skills, experience, and knowledge ( that they can use to help people 1-2 steps behind them). That is what people pay for.Considering 95% of the market are beginners… if you are good at something, you can help them get to your level ( no matter how “basic” you think the information is).Do you not watch basic content all day anyway? People don’t want new information, they want to be reminded of what works. - Use our Minimum Viable Offer strategy to start monetizing immediately (and have something to improve over time, rather than procrastinating until it’s perfect).
- Have a strategy for reducing the time you spend working over time (as you build leverage and improve your offer).
- Know how to create your own customers from the audience you are building, instead of “finding” the right customer for your offer.
- Take the guesswork out of building coaching, consulting, or digital product offers.
Phase 4) Marketing Strategy You aren’t making money because you aren’t promoting yourself or your offer. That is literally the only way to make money. Have something desirable and consistently put it in front of peoples’ faces. In Phase 4, I will show you how to systemize, automate, and be consistent with simple promotions. You will be able to make money without having the chance of forgetting to do it (or letting fear of failure get in the way). - Learn to sell on social media, in your writing, and across different platforms.
- Have consistent sales coming in while focusing on your meaningful message (no need to sound salesy all the time).
- Learn advanced automation strategies that you can implement at your own pace, especially once you validate your offer.
Bonus) The Creator Command Center The Creator Command Center is a Notion template that houses all of the systems. This is how you will manage your brand, content, offer creation, marketing strategy, and systemized promotions for consistent sales. Bonus) Live Product Build & Launch In the first Digital Economics Cohort, I built out my course The 2 Hour Writer.I have videos showing how I build it with the strategies in phase 3 and 4.There is a bonus module that shows how I had an $85,000 launch that resulted in my first $100K month.I did this to prove the strategies inside Digital Economics work if you stick to the plan. And, this past Black Friday, I blew my that monthly high out of the water in 4 days. That’s the power of these strategies if you stay consistent with your life’s work. submitted by AutoModerator to GenkiCourses_Cheapest [link] [comments] |
2023.06.10 05:49 Mizu_Soup_ Y'all seemed to like the fanfic with my oc so here's chapter 2
Chapter 2: Notebooks
It didn’t take Mizu long to memorize everybody’s names at the Armed Detective Agency. She got to know each of them quite well, though, the more she learned about Dazai, the more concerned she became.
This morning, for example, Mizu walked into the office to find Dazai sitting on a desk with headphones on, singing along to a song while everybody else was working. He didn’t seem to care that everybody could hear his singing, which, Mizu had to admit, wasn’t too bad. What really concerned her were the lyrics.
“You can’t do a double suicide all by yourself.”
“What is he singing?” Mizu asked, looking around at the other Agency members.
“Don’t question it,” Kunikida replied, looking rather irritated at the noise Dazai was creating as he loudly burst into the next line.
“DON’T FORGET to grab a friend! DOUBLE SUICIDE!”
Kunikida pinched the skin between his eyebrows and closed his eyes. “If he doesn’t shut up…” He sighed with frustration and opened his eyes, looking at Mizu. “Anyway, you’re going on your first job today. You need some hands-on training so you’ll be accompanying Ranpo to see how he does things.”
“Actually, I think Ranpo is already gone,” said Tanizaki, looking up from his desk.
Kunikida sighed. It was almost as if Mizu could see an invisible meter floating above his head that kept filling up with every tiny frustration until he inevitably exploded. Mizu hoped she wasn’t there when that happened.
“Atsushi, will you take Mizu with you today?”
Atsushi looked up from his desk with an apologetic expression. “Sorry, Kunikida. I actually don’t have any jobs outside the office today.”
The invisible meter went higher. “Kyouka? Tanizaki? Kenji?”
“I have a job outside the office today,” Dazai volunteered. “I’d be happy to train our rookie!”
Mizu turned around, looking out the window of the cafe. The sidewalks were flooded with people going to and fro. Which one of them had her notebook? She stepped outside and heard her phone ring again. This time, an eerie feeling crept up her spine as she read the words.
“Oh, come on! I’m a very good teacher.”
“I’m not subjecting our new recruit to your nonsense all day.”
Kenji joined the conversation. “I think you two are the only ones with jobs outside the office today Dazai might actually be the best choice.”
There goes the invisible meter again. Kunikida stood from his desk, his notebook making a loud noise as he shut it and slid it into his shirt pocket. “Fine. Mizu, you’ll be accompanying me today.” He refused to allow Dazai to be the new girl’s instructor when that man barely did his job to begin with. “As long as you follow my lead, this shouldn’t affect my schedule.”
Mizu wasn’t particularly excited to work with Kunikida. She really didn’t want to be on a job with him when his invisible meter hit its max. “What’s the job?”
“We’re looking for a missing person. A woman reported her husband not arriving home or at his workplace the last two days with no response on his phone.”
Mizu nodded and pulled out a notebook from the crossbody purse she was wearing. She began writing down the details of the case.
“She’s really into this,” said Dazai. “With that much love for notebooks, she might be your type, Kunikida.” He laughed.
Kunikida turned red. “Shut up, Dazai!”
Mizu looked up from her notebook at Dazai’s words and turned pink. “It’s not wise to date coworkers. You shouldn’t suggest that.”
Dazai laughed. “She even sounds like you, Kunikida.”
Mizu could see a vein popping in Kunikida’s forehead. The invisible meter is reaching its limit, she thought. He could explode at any moment. Mizu decided to try to diffuse the situation. “We should get going. You said you wanted to stick to your schedule, right?”
Kunikida sighed, turning his back on a snickering Dazai. “Yes. Let’s go.”
Kunikida explained the case more as him and Mizu walked down the staircase to the exit of the Armed Detective Agency. “The man we’re looking for frequents a certain cafe a few blocks from here so we’ll interview the employees and ask if any of them have seen him since his disappearance or if they’ve noticed anything odd about him leading up to it.”
“Perhaps he met up with people at this cafe. Those people could also lead us to clues.”
“You’re right.”
Mizu opened her notebook again and began writing a list of questions to ask the employees at the cafe.
“Do you carry one everywhere as well?” Kunikida asked.
Mizu nodded as she finished writing and slid the notebook back into her bag. “I do. A notebook is a very useful tool, even if it has nothing to do with one’s ability like yours does.”
“It is. Do you carry something for your ability?”
“I do.” Mizu reached into her bag and pulled out a water bottle. “Water manipulation is a useless ability without the presence of water. It’s best to keep this with me for emergencies.”
“That’s smart.” Kunikida replied as they exited the building and started down the street.
“Do you keep your name and number in your notebook so, if you ever lose it, it can be returned to you?”
Kunikida paused. “I never thought to do that, actually.” He immediately opens his notebook and scribbles his information on the inner cover. “Thank you for the idea.”
Mizu smiled. “Of course.” She liked talking to Kunikida. He seemed to be a reasonable person with good morals and standards. She admired that.
The two of them arrived outside the cafe and Kunikida held the door for Mizu who blushed slightly but made sure he didn’t see it as she thanked him and entered. It was a cute cafe, fully decorated with fake Sakura blossoms hanging from the ceiling.
It didn’t seem particularly busy so they made their way to the counter and asked to speak with some of the employees. The two of them spent a long time asking a list of questions to each employee there but nobody had any useful information on the missing man, nor had any of them seen him since the date he first went missing.
Mizu sighed as the last employee finished answering the questions and went back to work. “This got us nowhere.”
“I was expecting to find something to go on, even something small.” Kunikida replied.
“I’m going to get a coffee before we leave.” Mizu stood from the table and went over to the counter to order. A few minutes later, she met Kunikida at the door. “You’re not getting anything?”
“I’m okay,” he replied as they left the cafe. Kunikida decided to go back to the Agency and check the file for the case to see if there were any more leads to follow. Mizu followed him and was almost back to the Agency when she heard her phone go off. She reached into her bag and saw a text from an unknown number: I found your notebook.
Mizu quickly checked her bag. “Oh no.” She had left her notebook at the table when she went to order and never went back for it. She silently scolded herself for such a mistake. “Kunikida, I’ll be right back. I left my notebook at the cafe.”
“Oh, that’s an important thing to remember. Alright. I’ll meet you back at the Agency.”
Mizu waved bye to Kunikida as she rushed back to the cafe. She went to the front desk. “Excuse me, I left a notebook here.”
One of the employees looked over at her. “Nobody’s turned it in. Maybe check where you left it.”
Mizu was confused. She looked back over at the table she had been seated at but her notebook was gone. Someone had clearly found it or she never would have gotten that text. Why didn’t they turn it in at the front desk? That seemed like the logical thing to do.
Mizu heard her phone go off again and checked it. Another text glowed on her screen. I’m outside.
Mizu turned around, looking out the window of the cafe. The sidewalks were flooded with people going to and fro. Which one of them had her notebook? She stepped outside and heard her phone ring again. This time, an eerie feeling crept up her spine as she read the words: I can see you.
Who do you think has Mizu's notebook? Who do you think she'll be shipped with?

2023.06.10 05:47 _Capt_John_Yossarian Need Help Saving Stick bug Please
| (There are three photos in this post, please see the last one especially). So earlier today, I found a stick bug at my home here in Southeast Louisiana, United States. It seemed healthy aside from the fact that it was missing one of its front legs. It was crawling around, acting normal, or at least what I perceived to be normal for a stick bug because I've never seen one in person before. However, I just got home and noticed him lying upside down on the concrete. Does anyone know what may have happened to it and if there's anything that I can do to save it? It's still twitching so it's still alive, but you can tell it's just barely hanging on. Somebody please help me save this stick bug if it's at all possible. Thank you very much for your time. submitted by _Capt_John_Yossarian to whatsthisbug [link] [comments] |

2023.06.10 05:30 blank_7664 I was Misdiagnosed and can't help thinking about it.
It was the fall of 2020. Female, 23, 5'2, weight 113lbs. I felt sick unusually sicks. I felt the weight of my body become heavy. Every step began to take my breath away. I would sleep but would wake up every 30 minutes. And every 30 minutes I would gasp for air.
But before all that. I thought it was just a regular cold and I treated it as a cold. I took medicine. Slept. Went to work and started to work doubles. I thought it was finally my body telling me to take a day off. Two months went by, my "cold" would not leave. My cough got worst. Chills began every night. I still worked because no one could cover. So, my body decided to shut down full. I would wake up to mucus in my eyes and coughing but nothing coming out. I did the typically vicks, sprite or 7 up, night quil, soup diet. Nothing, would change that. One night, I was playing video games with my friends. And they said I did not sound like myself. And I thought I might have gotten a fever. Then in the back of my mind I thought maybe pneumonia. I had pneumonia when I was a 5 years old. I don't remember anything of the feelings of having it. But my mom would tell me to take care of myself because she didn't want to see me get like that ever again. After some convincing, my family forced me to go. But since I woke up around the late afternoon. I went to the ER to get checked. As I was walking from the car to the entrance of the ER. I realized something is wrong with me. I could barely breath and it wasn't this bad two days ago. Why now. My family was walking way ahead of me. I tried to yell at them to wait but hardly anything came out. So, I called. And they saw me struggling. They first thought I was joking but realized I started to wheeze as I tried to catch my breath. Mind you I had no memory of how pneumonia was for me as a child.
My mom went to the front desk talking to the lady, saying I needed to get seen asap. My older sister sat me down. There was so many people there. It felt like a long wait. I got up fast because I felt like I could not breath. Finally. After a 2 hour wait that felt like 5 hours. They called my name, asked why I was there and took my vitals. I told them I am coughing constantly and could hardly breath. They took note of my vitals, pressure and what I said. They escorted me out and told me they will call me when a doctor is ready to see me.
I waited for another hour. Crying because I cannot breath. But it started to hurt to cry. My chest felt like it had a lot of pressure. I looked at the time and started to slowly lose my patience. I heard my name. I got up quickly and rushed to see the doctor. She sat me down. Talked to me and I said I can't breath but i keep coughing. I get chills, i am wheezing and could hardly sleep. I feel pressure on my chest, it really hurts. The pain level is a 9 out 10. The doctor took notes and looked at me. She grabbed the stethoscope and listened. She then told me, "Nothing is wrong, your temperature is normal, nothing out of the ordinary. I'll suggest getting cold medince and drinking water." She pointed at the door and said "go ahead and head to the pharmacy". I looked at my mom and she looked at me, "see nothing". I looked down in embarrassment and started to slowly make my way out. As I was heading out. Another doctor who was in an office in the ER overheard my concerns. She told me to step into her office and she sat me down. She took her stethoscope and made me breath multiple times. She looked at me in disbelief and said, "oh. Honey." And yelled out to get a wheelchair. She escorted me to x-ray to see my lungs. She then had a nurse wait for me and escorted me to her main office. And had me under a device that helps me breath and break apart mucus for 30 minutes. She came into the room telling me that my left lung was filled with fluid and my right was half filled. She then started to give me actual answers and told me I had pneumonia. And that she is suprised I could even breath for so long. I told her how long I was sick for and such. After getting treated by her. I gotten better in the matter of a week and a half. I don't know what happened between that doctor and the one that treated me. But I am very thankful for the doctor who intervened with the diagnosis. She literally saved my life. Who knows what could have happened.
In the future is there anything I could do to avoid something like this? I feel like it was my fault for over reacting about chest pain. I am also scared to be ignored again about my concerns.

2023.06.10 05:12 Virtual_Entrance2855 TIFU by almost burning down my house or killing us all in our sleep

https://www.reddit.com/HomeImprovement/comments/145k3b7/how_we_almost_died_and_or_lost_our_house_aka_the/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button )
Hi all, just a quick preface, I'm only posting this incase someone else tries to search for this because I was at it for hours and it might save someone's life. I'm so glad we were home and it didn't happen in the middle of the night. I feel like writing it like a story so I'm gonna. Tldr at bottom.
This morning I was up early as I've been for the last few days, my cat just got spayed so I've been sleeping in little spurts with her as much as possible.
It was around 8am or so at this point after sitting with her in the living room just zoning out on my phone killing time with my cat and wife napping beside me when out of nowhere I get hit with a smell, hard.
Kinda hammy. Kinda like a ham that's just about to go bad or just turned bad. It filled the entire house. It was serious. Filled the house in a matter of minutes. I jokingly said to my cat "Are you smelly? Do your farts smell like old ham or something?" She replied "meow" as she usually does as she's quite vocal. This discussion woke my wife who I asked, "Do you smell some old ham or something?"
Before she can even open her eyes the smell intensifies. It's now so strong it's making me feel a bit nauseous."Yeah what is that" she says popping up pretty quickly looking puzzled or disgusted. "It literally just came out of nowhere and it's getting waaay worse by, like, the minute." I responded.
So we open the door and screen door window quickly, place a fan in front of it. By this point it's making me feel worse, my mouths watering a slight amount like I'm going to vomit if it gets much worse.
We are both running around the house trying to figure out where the hell this smell is coming from. She mentions it has a slight paint thinner-esque smell to it but I didn't really smell anything but overwhelming old ham.
We had our HVAC system checked out a few weeks ago and found out it was leaking coolant and after googling weird smells in the house with no results about ham she found the coolant can smell like paint thinner among other things however ham was not on the list so I call the guy who did the HVAC work anyway just to see what he thought.
He basically said it should be odorless and would stop by anyway Monday as he was visiting family and took the day and weekend to do so. So we start googling like crazy. Not finding anything but click bait articles about the usual bad house smells, you know dead animals in the vents, gas leaks, sewage fumes, fishy-smelling electrical fires and the usual stuff. I tried every key word I could think of to get different results.
Dead animals don't bother me, my stomachs pretty strong when it comes to that, didn't smell fishy, if it was sewage I figured I'd be blowing chunks as I'm pretty sensitive to the smell because of something gross that happened to me when I was young and it just didn't smell like sewage. We don't have gas so it wasn't that.
At this point I have no idea and I feel pretty awful so I decide to step out back and me and the wife basically both had the same idea at the same time to call the non-emergency fire department to as she's feeling weird too. They come out and have a gas and co2 meter thing that I'm sure checks for other stuff too with nothing showing up. They smell it too and I ask since they just got here if they smell it from the vent when I turn the AC on. Figured maybe a fresh nose in the place would be able to point it out if it did.
Nope the place smells less hammy to me almost as soon as the vents start to push air. They look around a bit more and have no idea what it could be or where it's coming from. At this point I'm stumped, they leave and it's back to Google. Finding almost nothing even close to what I have going on I decide to go underneath the house ( it's a trailer or mobile home ) and make sure nothing died under there or if I can even smell anything under there at all.
There was a couple cat poops from before we sealed up the side right I assume but no smell, nothing. At this point I'm clueless and not sure what to do or who to call but the smell is coming and going in waves now. Super strong to almost gone every 20 minutes or so except for one little spot in the kitchen it seemed to persist a bit. I'm checking everything I can at this point and it's just about 4pm.
I call the sewage company, maintenence comes to check the line and whatever. He comes in to see if he smells it and thinks it's sewage and after a bit he's not too sure. He recommends getting someone to check my air vents for something dead or left behind like a rodent or his meal and also to pour some water down the drains we haven't been using to make sure the traps are full and keeping sewage smell and fumes out just to be safe. I gladly take any advice I hear and have read so far and he leaves.
I start calling HVAC companies who are telling me they don't do dead animal removal in vents, and to call a pest removal company. What? Okay. So I call a pest company who tells me to call an HVAC company... who tells me to call pest control... who tells me to call animal control.. who tells me to call an HVAC company. I am still not sure who to call if you can't get into the vents easily and need them checked but it seems to be a different branch or kind of animal control but they're not answering.
I basically rip apart the kitchen, moving furniture, checking all the cupboards, the fridge, the dry food and anything I see. What about the water i left in the instant pot? No. Nothing. Anywhere. Just hammyness. The vents? Sure smells like fresh air.
I'm getting no where. It's almost 5:30 at this point, everything is closing or closed besides 24 hour places who are going to charge me an arm or two tonight and I have no clue about the weekend. I sadly sit down on the couch after I mess with the thermostat just trying to see if I can make it any better.
My wife steps outside because this wave is smacking her hard. At this point I had smelled a slightly chemical smell mixed in with the harsh hammyness a couple times but I don't recognize it at all. I'm thinking of dropping out the air duct myself, moving the fridge to check behind it. Everything. I get up to join her outside and that's when it happens.
ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzZzzZZZAP POP. It comes from the kitchen and instantly I know what it is. I look at my wife and say "of course, ham!" She's confused and asks "Ham? What was that noise" as I'm running toward the kitchen.
It was the vent light on the oven hood. You know the thing with a vent that probably has bacon grease and other food oils up in there. There's smoke and it smells HAMMY. I run to the breaker box and kill the power and we grab fire extinguishers. Luckily no fire. But we almost left the house to go to my mom's or a hotel until we could get it looked at several times but something kept telling me not to leave. And I'm really glad we didn't.
TL;DR house started to smell like almost bad ham and paint thinner or some kind of chemicals possibly sewage in a matter of minutes, turns out range hood was trying to start an electrical fire.
Moral of the story is if you smell slightly bad food and chemicals, flip the breaker and see if it goes away. Might just be about to have a serious problem.

2023.06.10 05:10 Few_You_9030 I Love You
12:00am December 13th it was a cold winter night the boy was sitting in a chair from his back yard. He placed it in front of his pool facing towards the mountains with all the copious amount of houses built across the mountain meant for the wealthy and only the wealthy. To the far left is a house, her house, the one he was never allowed to go into unless her parents weren’t there. He looked in the direction of the house hoping that she was in there safe and sound asleep. All the boy wanted was her to hold him, tell him everything was going to be fine and that she loved him while in her warm and safe embrace as she had before. She was the only escape from his prison that he called home, she knew how to calm him down and knew exactly what to say she was the boys safe place, his home, his strength…his everything. He thought about her, he let out a silent, painful cry not because she left him but because they were eachothers best friends because they knew everything about eachother but they couldnt be together soley because of the future, everyday the boy would blame himself for it, only if he were smarter, had the money to go with her. But he couldnt all he could do was hope, hope that they would meet again in near future. The boy whispered “I love you” hoping for a response back…nothing he said it again this time louder…no response, he stood up, with his throat tight, his eyes full of tears, heart getting smaller and smaller by the second, he closed his eyes and screamed “I LOVE YOU”. All of a sudden in the darkness of his eye lids he heard a soft angelic voice “I love you” he opened his eyes there she was standing in front of him lighter dark brown wavey hair, big beautiful brown eyes almost like meteors and the face the boy knew so well she was in a beautiful white dress. The boy looked down, he was wearing a black suit with a white dress shirt and black tie with a flower pinned to his shirt, he looked down at his left hand there was a ring on one of his fingers, not his index, not his middle, on his digit finger… his ring finger. He looked around they were in the center of a banquet hall, all of her family and his family looking at the two. She took his hand and put one around her waist and the other interlocked with hers, then the song started playing. They proceeded to have their first dance mean while everything was silent but her voice and the song that she wanted to play for this moment. The boy looked into her eyes as she smiled, a smile that could light up a whole room teeth like stars, he started speaking “ I missed you so much” she gazed at him and responded with “i missed you” they continued to dance. The blared “When you're cold and all alone,You can build you a city, And call it home” the boy spoke again with a strained voice “I Love You” the girl responed back “I Love You” she put her head on his chest and closed her eyes the boy kissed her head and put his head on her head and closed his eyes. Then the music started to fade, the feeling of her and her presence fading, he opened his eyes, he was back in his back yard looking at the mountains, he looked down she was no longer there just concrete floor. The boy fell to his knees and started to sob a quiet sob, a hole in the middle of his chest. He looked up at the mountains and looked to the far left, he started to scream with everything he had left in himself …“I Love You”

2023.06.10 05:01 The_Alloquist [A Lord of Death] - Chapter 64 (Sorore)
[←Chapter 63] [Cover Art] [My Links] [Index] [Discord] [Subreddit] [Chapter 65→] In a rare moment, Sorore was actually having a nice dream, a normal one, one could even say. She was back home, in that moderately seized house in Erratz, laying on her mother’s lap. She could even hear the gentle sound that the needle made as it went in and out of the cloth. It was peaceful, pleasant, surrounded by familiar sound and smells, though her sight was blurry and confused.
It was not to last, as the sound of rushing water overtook all else, until she was forced awake by its unrelenting pace. When she sat up, rubbing her eyes in the broad bed, she released that it wasn’t the sound of water, nor was it relegated to her dreams. There was a commotion outside people talking in hushed but harsh tones.
Neither Lillian, nor Aya were within the room, and she wondered if they were having an argument. That wouldn’t be good - she’d watched them have the spat earlier, and that dispute didn’t need much worsening. Sorore crept to the door to the outer hallway - she loved how they slid to create whole new rooms. It was something she’d have to think about more she decided as she pulled it open and realised several things at once.
One, there were a whole lot of armoured figures in the hallway, at least four, maybe half a dozen. Two, the balcony door was open, and Lillian was currently arguing with one of them, Aya standing by looking like a mining explosive had gone off right next to her. Three, her brother and Niche had just emerged out of the room beside, and Niche was about to draw his sword at the sudden intrusion.
For a moment, she panicked, her mind going completely blank. Her mind raced with visions of bloody aftermath, and a chase through the city, back to the dinner she’d had with all those nice people.
“Oh, hello!” she blurted, drawing the surprised stares of several of the men, “who might you be?”
There was an instant of shocked silence between all parties.
“Nobody do anything!” called the man who was out on the porch, “We are representatives of the sand-shell legion, on behalf of the matriarch of the Eisen. We have come to retrieve her granddaughter.”
Niche lowered his hand from his sword belt, but Sorore could tell that he was ready to fight on a moment’s provocation. She also noticed that Kieren, in the same gown she’d worn to the square was standing in the stairwell. The woman looked so nervous Sorore thought she might fall over and down the stairs.
“Let’s move to a less cramped area,” said the captain, in a tone that brook no argument.
Eventually, it was sussed out, though not without considerable resistance on part of the paladins, that they were to meet in the great hall. As they sat, they were brought simple drinks of milk and honey, flavoured with something else that Sorore could not quite place. The two paladins looked like pacing cats, constrained on their chairs, arms crossed and eyes hard.
“Under no circumstances can we give one of ours into you custody,” said Lillian, locked in a match with the captain.
“Within the city, you are under the authority of the guard, no matter who you are. If the matriach has sent for this girl, then we have our orders.”
“As do we, captain,” said Niche, “to protect and guide each of these young women and… man, unto the holy lands of Angorrah.”
One of the guards flanking the captain whispered something in his ear.
“She’s not going to like it,” the captain said, then heard something else.
“Very well. Bloodshed before the Festival would be unwise. We have enough of that already. Right then, one of you paladins, assuming you are who you say you are, shall come with us and the lady to be received by the Eisen. I cannot say it’s likely you will have a happy reception. They will expect you to come unarmed.”
The paladins were bristling at the implied threat, and several hands were already dangerously close to their sword belts. Sorore gripped the mug that she was being offered, before Aya sat up and proclaimed to the group.
“Leave two of your men with us, then,” she said.
The captain’s eyes furrowed.
“I don’t wish to second guess you, my lady,” he said, “but why would I do that?”
“Trust,” Aya said, with a side long look at Lillian, “simple. If you leave your men with us, you can’t simply waltz off with me and my friend. Plus, it gives us men who know, and can quickly get around the city, so they can find you whenever they need to.”
The captain considered, and nodded.
“Very well my lady. Two men will be left for the disposal of your party members. But you shall have to come with us, immediately.”
“Me as well,” said Lillian.
“As you wish,” he said, “but you must disarm yourself. That is non-negotiable.”
Lillian was fuming, but unbuckled her belt and handed her armaments to Niche. The legionaries surrounded them, and departed with them out the front of the pyramid. They were left in front of the roaring fire, Kieren sitting beside them holding a considerably more full glass of the amber coloured alcohol.
“You said that this-” Niche began, his face reddened, “you sold us out!”
“Sold you out?” said Kieren incuriously as she swirled the glass around, “sold you out?”
The woman slammed down the glass on one of the nearby table, somehow not breaking it in the process.
“Maybe, you should of told us that you had the granddaughter of Aystara godsdamned Eisen in your retinue? No, forgot that little detail?”
“Okay, can we get this over with?” said Frare, picking at his nails.
“What?” said both the paladin and the trader, staring at the temerity of the youth.
“Blah, blah, we’ve all kept things from eachother,” he said, “so let’s all move on. Who is this ‘Aystara’? Why is she important?”
While Niche gaped at the casual ease from which Frare dismissed the turbulence, the trader seemed to settle.
“Only one of the two most powerful people in the city, young man,” she said, downing a shot from the glass, “between her and Edmund Poutash, it’d be easier to list what they don’t own. The docks, the schools, the farms… if you want an import or export licence? You go through her. You want to own a ship bigger than a rinky-dink fishing boat? You go through her or Potash.”
She finished the glass, and reached for the decanter, and stopped herself.
“And you waltz into the city, and conveniently forget to mention that you have her granddaughter, who hasn’t been in the city ever, if I remember correctly. To say she’d be furious that you didn’t bring the young lady before her immediately would be an understatement. And worse, you dragged us into it.”
“She must be awfully mean - you had nothing to do with us. You just hosted it.”
The woman blinked at the boldfaced remark, and Sorore delivered a good kick to his shins to drive the point home.
“No, no,” she ultimately said, “no I don’t think she’ll do anything to our family, if she believes us. She’s not unreasonable. At least, so I’ve heard. I’ve only met her once, and that was for a brief time. As for what she’ll do to you...”
She gave a pointed look at Niche.
“You tried to hid her granddaughter from her, maybe unintentionally, maybe not. If I were a betting woman, which I’m not, I would say that means trouble. If you want my advice-”
“I don’t,” said Niche, crinkling his noise.
“Don’t be stupid,” said Frare, before he howled at another kick.
Sorore’s face was burning with indignation and embarrassment. This was all too much.
“If you want my advice,” Kieren pressed on, “you’d go find and talk to your commander immediately. I could fetch for him if you wish - I know where Amicio’s home is.”
Niche, through narrowed eyes and clenched teeth, acquiesced.
“Good, now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some letters to send,” she said, “of course, though this has earned you no small amount of displeasure from certain peoples, we’ve been instructed to provide you with house and board for as long as it takes to sort this out. You are still welcome guests and you will be treated as such.”
The tepid truce struck, the children were sent back up to their rooms. Sorore tried to sleep, and managed no more than half an hour before she was woken by her brother.
“The commander’s here,” he said, “he wants to talk to us.”
The commander, looking very tired, but light of step than Sorore had ever seen him, waited by the fire. He was talking with Kieren and the two remaining legionarries in the fast-paced trading tongue of the city, but stopped when he saw the girl come downstairs.
“My lady,” he said, “it seems there’s been a huge misunderstanding.”
She realized that it was his manner of dress which was throwing her off. Instead of his usual worn and thoroughly practical travelling clothes, he wore the long flowing silks of orange and cream. It suited him, matching his calm personality.
“What misunderstanding?” she said.
“Well, we had no idea that our own Aya was the granddaughter of Aystara Eisen herself. I was surprised as anyone. Of course, I knew she was an Eisen, from her mother.”
He looked at Kieren, who looked like she was about to fall asleep.
“But I never imagined that she was a direct descendent of the main house. I thought she was part of the branch, not necessary to cause any fuss, especially during the preparation of the festival. Ah!”
He slapped his head to indicate his shock at the realisation.
“What a terrible mistake I’ve made,” he said, patting the woman’s arm, “this is all on my horrendous lack of judgement. Here’s what’s going to happen, one of these gentlemen and trader Amicio will be vouching for me at the gate. I’m going to the Eisen estate and having a friendly chat with the matriarch, to clear up this misunderstanding.”
Sorore felt at last some suggestion that someone around the city knew what was happening and what they were going to do.
“Here’s what I need you and your brother to do,” Naia said, “I want you to wait and enjoy the hospitality of the madame of the house.”
The term seemed to flatter Kieren, who flushed at the complement. Or that might’ve been the drink, Sorore wasn’t entirely sure.
“Niche, you take care of them. I expect that I might be at the estate for the rest of the night, and possibly onto next afternoon. Things are always so chaotic around the Festival. There’s no reason for you not to attend the festival opening tomorrow, if you can.”
“You want us to attend a festival?” said Niche in disbelief, “right now?”
“Well, not right now, it hasn’t started yet,” said the commander, “but, if Kieren would graciouslly agree to take you as guest of honour, you’d have excellent seats. If that’s not too much to ask, especially after our little debacle.”
Kieren nodded, and affirmed that she wouldn’t mind at all, if the matter was going to be soon cleared up. Sorore was now certain that it wasn’t just alcohol.
“Great. You’re all taken care of, now I’d better explain myself. If you wouldn’t mind,” he said, pointing to the quarter full glass, which Kieren handed to him. The commander downed it all in one, rolled his shoulders, and smiled.
“Don’t worry. It’ll all work out in the end,” he said, “in fact, I would say to enjoy yourselves, as much as you can. And best go back to bed, unless you want to be sleeping during the festival, which, I assure you from experience, you do not.”
Before they could say anything, the commander had swept by them, vanishing out of the front of the pyramid.
“You should heed him,” said Kieren, picking up the decanter and the glass and moving towards the kitchens, “if you’re stuck here for the time being, you might as well enjoy it And that starts with getting good sleep.”
“Last time you said that, we woke up to armed guards,” Niche said flatly.
“Well, I assure you, I’m not boring enough to do that a second time. It would be assassin’s from across the streets, who approach over the rooftops.”
“Do they actually exist?” asked Frare, suddenly excited.
“Oh, I’m sure,” said Kieren as she stowed away her drinking equipment, “but not tonight. Go get some sleep sir paladin, and you two young ones as well. You’ll need it.”
Sorore was cajoled up the steps, Frare coming up after her. Niche seemed placated enough for the time being, though he was clearly unhappy with the outcome. The pleasant dreams neglected to revisit for a second time, but at least the sleep was uninterrupted. When Soroe next awoke, it was a young handmadein, pulling open the screen doors.
“Good morning, my lady,” she said, “how did you sleep?”
“I- well enough, I suppose,” she said, stretching and yawning, before quickly covering her mouth.
The maid had the presence of mind not to notice as she revealed the bright sunlight streaming through the open balcony.
“It must almost be midday!” Sorore exclaimed, leaping out of the bed as she tried to straighten herself.
The maid chuckled as she finished opening up the room.
“Not to fear, my lady,” she said, “it’s customary to sleep into the early afternoon. The Festival does not start until just before sunset, afterall. In fact, you might be earlier than many of the household.”
“Oh,” Soroe said, feeling rather foolish, “Um. Well, I guess I’ll get dressed.”
“Of course. I’ve left out some clothes for you. Madame Kieren suggested that you try clothes from our city. I hope you’ll love them. Do you bathe?”
Sorore wrinkled her nose at the prospect. What kind of question was that?
“Of course I do,” she said.
“Well, there’s a place to bath at the bottom of the pyramid. If you wish to bath alone, you should go now - I’ll bring you clothes for you to change at the waterfront.”
“You bathe together here?” Sorore said
“In the mornings and evenings,” she said, “we do not bring water up into the house if we cannot avoid it. To the stone goes the sea, and to the home goes the sky.”
She looked around, then leaned in with a smile.
“Also, water is very troublesome to carry up all those flights.”
“So just come down to the waterfront?” she said, gathering up what spare things she needed.
“Just follow me, my lady,” said the handmaiden, picking up a pile of clothes and leading her down the stairs.
They emerged onto an inset pool carved into the pyramid interior. A smooth stone deck, with benches and chairs and stacks of towels, as well as several large paper screens, presumably for changing. Sorore was glad to see they were alone, at least for the time being.
At the handmaid, Kiroe’s, direction, she stripped down naked and plunged into the pool. The water was a perfect temperature - cold enough to dispel the last of the grogginess, warm enough to be pleasant to float in. She swam around for a bit, constrained by the relatively small volume, while Kiroe prepared her outfit on the deck.
“Do you mind if I join you?” came a voice from the other end.
Kieren slipped out of a thin morning dress and stepped into the water. Sorore swam over and came to stand beside her.
“Is there any news? About Aya and the commander?” she said, a little too quickly.
Kieren, who’d been sinking into the water with a sigh of contentment, opened one eye.
“Straight to business? Perhaps you are better suited to the city than I thought.”
Sorore tried to smile, but her concern was betrayed, judging by the woman’s softening of expression.
“My knowledge is limited. My uncle is serving as our representative for now. Sounds like your commander was at least allowed to make his case to the Eisen. He made note of one other companion of yours.”
“Oh? Who?” she said, pushing out into the pool, feeling the water surge over her shoulders.
“A man in black clothes,” she said, “who hides his face behind a mask. He was there for the meeting.”
“The mage?” said Sorore, before considering that she maybe shouldn’t have mentioned it.
“A mage?” said Kieren, before submerging herself in the water.
She tossed her hair back as she came back up, spraying water in a neat arc.
“Well, that explains his odd demeanour,” she said, “now, regrettably, that’s all the time I have today for bathing. I will see you at the festival.”
“Hello cousin! May I join- oh,” came a voice from the steps leading out.
It was Ivers, dressed in nothing but a loose robe, which was already half-way off his body, sculpted with muscle from hauling rope and tackle. Sorore stifled a gasp and turned away, trying not to redden.
“I can come back later,” he offered.
“Do you mind?” Kieren said to Sorore, “if you do, it’d be best to finish soon and let others bathe.”
“No, no,” she said, waving her host away.
Kiero had warned her, after all. It would be best to become accustomed to the strange ways of this beautiful city. Besides, it’s not like she hadn’t bathed before in the company of men her age back home. She cursed herself for being so self-conscious, and forced herself to turn around.
“Are you sure? I can leave if you want, it’s not-” Ivers began.
“No, it’s fine. It’s fine,” Sorore said, smiling at him, “it’d be good to have companionship.”
“Well, then, Ivers, I trust you’ll behave yourself,” said Kieren rising from the water.
“Of course, cousin,” Ivers said, casting his eyes to the floor.
Sorore tried not to take a wicked pleasure at the blush that crept across his dark complexion.
“Oh, one more thing,” whispered her host, bending over to the girl, “it’s considered polite to not look when they’re outside the water.”
Kieren laughed at Sorore’s own furious blush as she made for one of the poolside changing screens.

2023.06.10 04:48 65_289 I did it! I met my drumming goal for 2023
When I bought my kit in December 2022, I set a goal of playing live music with other people in front of strangers in 2023. I took steps towards that with Drumeoke last month and this month, but today I got to play with people. It went really well overall, except I completely missed the cue for ending Enter Sandman. Oh well, I've never played with these guys and have really only played with a full band like 4 times in my life so far. But I didn't make any egregious errors, didn't stop playing, etc. so I am calling it a win. I went ahead and signed up for an open jam next week where you have to sign up in advance with your 2 songs. It's on a big stage with lights and the whole works.
Now it's on to my next goal, which I did not put a timeline on because of the unpredictability - Playing an actual gig in a band. So far, finding a band or starting one have proven elusive, but if I keep going to these jams hopefully it will happen sooner or later.

2023.06.10 04:26 Pretend-ThoughtZen how do i start losing weight?
I (f18) just realized now today how my weight has affected my entire body. I see now that all the envy and jelousy got built up so i want to work for myself. I want to be fit and healthy just like the people in my family. I always get teased or constantly get bullied by my mother saying how much she is smaller compared to me, embarassing me in front of so many people about my weight and appearance. I confronted her and she just told me maybe in that way i will lose some weight and be beautiful like my sisters. This situation has happened many times but i didnt have the courage to step up for myself and do what is better for my body.
I have been diagnosed with PCOS and still i didn't have the will to start a healthier life. Instead i poured my time into academics. This took a toll on me because as i stared at the mirror I saw an ugly girl who has no confidence because of her own body. And also this time i want to see myself living a healthier life. So please can you tell me some methods and tips for losing weight for my age and weight (70kg). I know i am obese. But i wanna start a new life, a healthier life.

I have a family and fuck all free time, but managed to carve out some consistent time in the evenings when the kids were in bed.
Total study time:
Two weeks concentrated, and a couple of hours most nights for about five months as well as day to day pentesting.
First attempt, December 2022:
I’d done maybe 50 of the (old) lab boxes, 30+ proving grounds, lots of the TJ Null list. Started my first attempt at 10am, first shell on AD took less than an hour….then it took me 12 hours to try and privesc on the second AD box after which time I went to bed.. Woke up at 3am, managed a stand-alone box as a break, tried again on the AD set and didn’t get anywhere. Abandoned around 9am. It was a slog. I did not enjoy it and it was extremely depressing.
After the first attempt, I got two months of extra lab time, determined to get the bonus points, which I did. I also redoubled my note taking on privilege escalation in particular, making a cheat sheet of all the techniques outlined in the material all in one place. My previous notes were a mess, comprehensive but badly organised. I also worked my way through a bunch of the new networks as well as the three practice exams over a month, and used them as some very detailed note taking practice.
Second attempt, May 2023: Started at 10am again, had knocked off the AD set by lunch. Got a foothold on a standalone box by 2pm, straightforward privesc (it was in the material). At this point I had enough points to pass (40, 10, 20) but plenty of gas left in the tank. Got another foothold around 4, the box was a bit of a surprise, but nothing that wasn’t in the material. The privesc was right in front of me when I logged in, it just took a bit of time to enumerate properly.
Paused for dinner, then back into it. Got my exploit half working but not quite. Let the proctor know that I was going to use metasploit, finish it off….annnd it didn’t work. Took another break then tried manually again, and finally got my low priv shell. Last box! At this point there were diminishing returns on everything I was trying, so it was time to go to bed. I checked my notes to make sure I had enough detail to work my way back through the chains. Woke up at 6:30, had some breakfast, reset the boxes and started working through all the exploits again. It took about ten minutes to replay the AD set from my notes. My notes were pretty good so it was just a matter of taking all the possible screenshots for every single step of the process and making sure I hadn’t missed any commands or tooling - I had known of someone getting 70 points but being marked down and failing for a missing reference, which sounds like some classic offsec bullshit.
Took about four hours to write the report, thanks to my very detailed note taking. Got the passing email 48 hours later.
Anyway, here are the bullet points: - Enumerate and nmap at least three times, SO many times in every offsec thing ports simply aren’t open the first time. - Reset the boxes, don’t assume offsec have done their job properly. - If you get creds, spray them EVERYWHERE. Do it. - Take notes and screenshots of absolutely everything, try and use a tool like cherry tree or obsidian to keep them as organised as possible. - Use every tool at your disposal, everything from inspect element up. - Take breaks and drink water. - Take your time enumerating, start manually, try the basics and look around before reaching for a script like the PEAS suite (don’t get me wrong, they’re fantastic but verbose) - When you’re studying, if you hit a wall, don’t be afraid to use the forums or discord. You don’t know what you don’t know! Just be sure to take notes if you learn something new
I’m just glad it’s done. It’s supposedly an ‘entry level cert’ which is only partially true, there’s such a huge breadth of content to learn and 900 pages of a PDF doesn’t exactly feel entry level.
Good luck everyone and thanks for being part of this very supportive community.

First Chapter

Here My other story, Going Native
Here Hey look, a chapter released in a somewhat reasonable timeframe! As always, thank you for reading and let me know what you think!
*****
Faye hadn’t noticed right away that Meechie missed her regular stop. The pair had been standing in relative silence, Faye’s thoughts drifting off to debate whether or not she would go to the next movie night at the Library, and it was several stops before she realized that she hadn’t said goodbye to the Rakiri. It was in a bit of a brain fog that Faye half-turned, figuring she should hurry and say it now before Meechie got too far away, but instead she jerked her head to find the brown-furred woman staring directly at her.
“I am still here,” Meechie said quietly, a small smile causing the fur on her cheeks to bristle.
“You are,” Faye agreed. “I thought I missed seeing you off.”
“I am accompanying you to the library,” the young woman declared. Faye tried not to read too much into vocal cues, especially when she had little-to-no experience with the species in question, but there still seemed to be something nervous in Meechie’s voice. Nervous and pleading.
“I don’t need a bodyguard,” Faye said cautiously. “And I definitely don’t need someone making a decision like that for me.”
That seemed to strike a nerve. Meechie slunk back as if hit, causing some grumbles from the other passengers. The Rakiri took a moment to smooth out the fur on her face with one hand before replying.
“I did not express myself well. I wished to visit a library after work, and as you work at one I thought it would be nice to travel alongside you.” Meechie’s eyes lowered. “I should not have presumed.”
As if on cue, the bus slowed to its next stop and Meechie moved to leave. It would put the furry young woman at a corporate business park near absolutely nothing of interest. Faye shot out a hand and grabbed Meechie by the shoulder. The Rakiri froze mid-step as if turned to stone.
“Don’t!” She tugged gently and Meechie shifted back to Faye’s side. “No need to run off. Sorry. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.”
“I…” Meechie seemed to be glancing everywhere except at Faye. “It’s alright?”
God damn was this poor girl shy. “Yes, you can ride to the library with me. I just wish you had mentioned it earlier; we don’t have a lot of time to talk shop now.” Faye considered Meechie again, clothes that looked brand new and not a speck of grease to be seen. “Is that why you got all dressed up?”
Meechie nodded, still keeping her eyes somewhere to the left of Faye’s face. “I normally go straight home, but it wouldn’t do to soil any of the books.”
“The books and I both appreciate it.” That earned Faye a smile, at least. “What are you looking for? I didn’t take you for much of a reader.”
“I like adventure stories,” Meechie replied.
“Hmm…” Faye tapped a fingertip to her lips as she thought. “Historical? Big battles?”
“The fighting isn’t what’s important.” Meechie stopped, eyes drawn to the motion of Faye’s finger, and she self-consciously brought her hands back down to her sides. “It is more about the people the hero meets on his travels.”
His travels?
The pronoun threw Faye for a bit of a loop; she was so used to hearing the feminine form used as the general that it stood out. It only took a moment for her to understand. Faye grinned.
“
Romantic stories?” She asked the question in a faux whisper, slightly teasing, and Meechie immediately went wide-eyed. Her freshly-cleaned fur puffed up in what could only be panic. Faye reached over and gave Meechie a couple quick pats on the shoulder before leaning in.
“Don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.”
—
“...should have what you’re looking for. I’m going to be upstairs at Archives, but the help desk can find what you’re looking for if you get lost. And remember, no judgment.”
Mahnti glanced across the lobby more out of instinct than anything else. Hearing Faye’s voice simply drew his attention, especially considering he didn’t think her shift had started yet. His eyes quickly picked her out as Faye turned away from the entrance and towards the hall that led towards the employee lounge. He also took note of who she had been talking to.
Rakiri weren’t uncommon in University City, but the way this one stood in place, staring at Faye’s back with an unnerving intensity, was setting off alarms all down Mahnti’s rather sizeable spine. He began to make his way on an intercept course towards Faye, trying to imprint the furry girl’s look into his memory just in case. Brand new clothing, still showing the creases of packaging. Not quite the right fit for the woman’s frame, and she moved like she was profoundly uncomfortable in them. Dark brown fur that seemed to puff up as she stared at Faye, then flattened as she noticed Mahnti watching her.
The Senthe flared his hood slightly, emphasizing his size instinctively as he narrowed his eyes. The Rakiri stared at him unblinking for a moment, then turned and wandered off towards the main stacks. It only took another moment for him to catch up to Faye.
“Who was that?”
Faye jerked slightly, then stopped and turned with a small smile decorating her lips. “Good morning to you too.”
“Yeah, yeah, good morning and all that. Was that your bus Rakiri?”
Faye nodded, the smile fading as she picked up on Mahnti’s unease. “Yeah. Why, do you know her?”
“No, nothing like that.” Mahnti sighed. He didn’t want to cause problems, but he also had some serious bad vibes going. “She was just standing there staring at you. It was pretty creepy.”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed her doing that a lot. I think it might be a Rakiri thing? Meechie seems to have latched on for whatever reason.” Faye shrugged. “I don’t think she has any friends.”
“I’m not surprised if that’s her way of making them. She seriously looked like she was about to attack you or something.”
“Doesn’t know anybody, trying to figure out how to socialize with people…” Faye shrugged again, adding a lopsided smile. “I can relate. She seems harmless enough, even helped protect me the other day.”
Mahnti slumped a little. “I suppose. I just… be careful, okay? I don’t want to have to frame another dent in a wall.”
He also didn’t want to have to worry about Faye bleeding out in some dark corner somewhere. She could outrun a Shil, but a Rakiri with ill intentions would be a far more dangerous proposition.
“After what happened before, I’m not taking chances.” Faye patted the side of her purse conspiratorially and Mahnti could see the outline of a cylinder. It seemed to be a fair bit larger than the grinshaw spray he carried in a vest pocket, but that could have just been a trick of the bag it was in. Regardless, he felt a little better knowing she had something. It wasn’t until he saw the fear she was tucking down behind her smile that he suddenly realized just how vulnerable Faye must feel.
She was smaller and weaker than a Shil’vati, easy to pick out of a crowd and easier to pick on, and with the way she dressed and styled herself Faye really was priming the pump for trouble. A random attack at her place of work had nearly killed her and, less than a week later, here she was trying to take it in stride. All while knowing that the chance of it happening again was approaching certainty.
“Come on,” Mahnti said quietly. He took one of Faye’s hands and pulled her deeper into the hallway, away from prying eyes and towards the break room. He almost told her that she was safe here, but that was a lie. Nowhere was safe if you stood out, and he knew that better than anyone.
–
Ib’aest Jamia, chronic layabout and day manager at the Jamia Library, hoped he didn’t look too guilty when Faye’s face poked through his office doorway and interrupted the scandal rag he was reading on his pad. He slipped his pad face-down into his desk drawer in a single smooth motion and slapped on his second-best friendly but not flirtatious smile.
“Hey Ibby.” Faye seemed suddenly nervous herself, glancing around the room as if to ensure that it was just him in his office. “Can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Is it work related?” Faye shook her head in the negative. “Then of course! Come on in and shut the door.”
Faye followed his lead, latching the door and stepping gracefully to the chair he indicated on the other side of his desk. It was odd, watching the way she moved. Too graceful for most women he knew, but still nervous. Faye sometimes seemed to approach the world as if everything was made of glass. Or perhaps that she was.
Ibby looked the girl up and down, trying for a “kind older friend” vibe. The Human was dressed simply in one of the outfits she seemed to have a knack for throwing together. He knew he had seen at least some of it before, the tights and the skirt at least, but the overall effect was new to him. She struck such an odd balance, clearly a woman but throwing off such a distractingly masculine vibe. In this one person Ibby had a real empirical example of the strange dichotomy that made Humanity so interesting. That said, there was really only one reason for a young woman to ask to speak to an older man in private. At least, only one he figured Faye would be up for.
“Boy troubles?”
Faye blinked at Ibby, confused for a moment. “Kind of, yeah. I guess you could call it that.”
Ibby ran through the list in his head. Mahnti was the obvious first choice, but the way that pair seemed to be getting along he didn’t think there would be any trouble he’d have to intervene with. Besides, the Senthe had said they weren’t doing the perpendicular poke. At least not yet. Faye also knew Tevor, but Ibby had yet to see anyone aside from Sade who could pull that poor kid out of his shell. Maybe Iora over in Digital Media. Did Faye even know Iora?
“Have you ever been to any fancy dress parties?”
Ibby’s racing mind slammed into a drift, changed gears, and nearly ran headlong into the answer. “You’re going on a date with that reporter!”
“It’s NOT a date. I have gone to great lengths to make that clear to both of us.” Faye’s voice was firm. The girl was apparently a better liar than Ibby thought. “He invited me out to go see a play being performed in English at a fancy theater.” Faye pulled out her pad and showed Ibby a copy of the playbill.
“Ooh, the Icosahedral Garden. That’s a great venue.” Ibby considered. “I assume he’s dragging you out to dinner first?”
“I guess? I didn’t really think that far ahead. I just realized that I have no idea what’s culturally acceptable to wear to an event like this.” Faye blushed prettily. “I don’t want to show up in a ball gown and have it turn out to be more of a spikes and corpse paint thing.”
“I… what?”
“Nevermind. Just making a joke.” Faye shrugged, eyes drooping as her expression soured. “It seems like I make a scene no matter where I go. It would be nice to blend in for a change.”
Fat chance of that, Ibby thought. Still, he could be of some help. “What would you say to another shopping excursion? I wouldn’t mind helping you out.”
Faye nodded, relief washing over her. “I would appreciate that. I have an errand to run tonight and plans for tomorrow, but how about the day after? I’m free all day and that will still give me plenty of time before the show.”
“It’s a…” Don’t say date, you idiot. Poor girl is nervous enough as it is. “..plan. Truth be told, it’ll be nice to show you the sights properly. Most of your new friends seem to be more of the indoor sort.”
Faye snorted back a laugh. “Ain’t that the truth.”
–
…Really?
Faye tilted her head to one side just to give her eyeroll a running start. The sign hanging above the shop door was written in a rounded style made to emulate the shape of English letters despite being Shil’vati script. Through the window she could see an assortment of Human snacks, assorted tchotchkes that somehow made her feel victimized on behalf of every race and culture involved, and an embarrassingly large amount of soft-core pornography.
"Chad Nova’s Human Emporium" was probably the single cringiest store that Faye had ever seen, and she distinctly remembered hanging out at the mall back when you could get jeans with pockets big enough to hold a CD player. It didn’t help that, while Faye was standing in the mall concourse staring at the store, the clerk inside was staring right back. That girl seemed to consider blinking an afterthought.
After a moment to square her shoulders and pat the side pocket on her purse reassuringly, Faye entered the store. It was a riot of mismatched goods, poorly made display swords and replica firearms tucked alongside “authentic” Polynesian nose flutes and decks of playing cards. After accidentally locking eyes with what she was fairly certain was an Abraham Lincoln body pillow, she decided to simply accept that this was what her species boiled down to.
“Can I help you, miss?” The voice was high and cracked around the edges. Faye turned to look at the clerk, a Shil’vati girl barely out of school with a face still lightly dusted with acne. The girl seemed to be about ten seconds from exploding in excitement.
“Actually, yeah. I was wondering if you do special orders.” Faye pulled out her pad and started tapping at the screen. “I brought some sundries when I moved out here and I don't know what I’m going to do when I run out.”
“Moved, like from Earth?” Make it five seconds.
“Yes, and to answer your next question, yes, I’m a Human. Nobody decided to bleach a Helkam or anything like that.”
Four… three… two…
The Shil girl turned away and ran to the back of the store, sliding to a stop in front of a rather tacky looking beaded curtain hanging next to an “Employees Only” sign. She shoved her head through the beads.
“MOOOOOOOOOOM!!! HUMAN!!”
Faye took a moment to collect herself. She glanced around, cataloging the strange array of goods. There were some things that clearly fell into similar themes, like the large snack section or the graphic novels (emphasis on graphic), but much of the place was simply a cacophony of crap. She noticed a stuffed doll of the Statue of Liberty fallen over into a container of brightly colored, thumb-sized plastic crucifixes. All the little Jesuses seemed to be staring in mute, cross-eyed horror at the plushie green giant.
“Oh! It’s you!”
Faye turned away from the plastic Jesusai and saw that the young Shil’vati clerk was now accompanied by another woman. Definitely not old enough to be the clerk’s biological mom, but with how things tended to go with Shil families and how long lifespans could get it wasn’t the most surprising. If the clerk was a Human seventeen, she’d put this new one at twenty three or twenty four.
“Yeah, it’s me,” Faye replied to the stranger with a shrug.
“We saw you on the news, but…” the young woman trailed off, her black and gold eyes focused on the still-fading bruises on Faye’s face.
“Lost a fight,” she said curtly. Anything to move this along. “Some friends of mine recommended this place to get Human snacks, and I figured if you’re getting regular imports you might be able to get me some other stuff.”
“..Ah. Oh! Yes!” The woman blinked, then looked at her daughter. “Can you go grab my order book?” Turning back to Faye, she continued, “What sort of things did you need? We have quite a collection here.”
“You certainly do.” Faye tried to focus on the woman, but her eyes kept getting drawn off to the side. An anime-style wall scroll of a mostly-naked, hugely muscled brown-skinned man was staring at her, and she couldn’t place who it was supposed to be. Bob Sapp maybe?
“Mostly I was thinking about makeup, maybe some comfort food. Stuff you probably don’t stock but I can’t afford to import on my own.”
The young woman nodded, her dark hair bouncing. “I’m sure we can work something out. You’re lucky; most Human stores are part of a chain, but we’re independent. We’re not confined to ordering from just one catalog.”
As if she was just waiting for her cue, the Shil kid arrived and plopped an oversized binder into her mom’s open arms. She placed it on a table and flipped it open with a thump.
It was like someone tried to print the Internet. The woman quickly fingered her way through hard-copy recreations of digital storefronts while Faye groaned inwardly. She liked paper more than most but this just seemed so awkward. An alien luddite.
“My brother-in-law’s cousin-in-law works on Earth at one of those new superconductor factories. They ship a lot of materials here, so I was able to negotiate a good deal to take up their extra mass allotment for cheap.” The woman stopped on a page, then pointed. “Something like this?”
Faye leaned over the book and looked. It was the digital storefront of one of those corner store and pharmacy chains that sells makeup on top of everything else. Not exactly top of the line, but better than the dollar store.
“Perfect.” Faye started noting individual things she’d like and the woman dutifully started marking things down on a scrap of paper. The big items on Faye’s shopping list were more foundation and concealer, but she picked out some blush, lipstick, and eyeliner pencils too; she was leery about trusting Shil makeup in general. It was hard enough to find brands that didn’t make her skin break out into an oily mess without getting alien biochemistry involved.
“We can order whatever you like, but the fewer stores you have to pick from the better. I would hate for our buyer to get pissy because she has to run too many errands on the hot guy planet.” The clerk paused for an eye roll. “Also, keep in mind that these prices aren’t what you’ll pay; there will be an additional convenience fee.”
Faye nodded. “Of course. What are you thinking?”
“Hmm…” The woman looked Faye up and down in a way that suddenly made her feel a lot smaller and more vulnerable. While this stranger wasn’t particularly tall for a Shil, that still made for a five or six inch height difference. “You are pretty cute…”
“Dad said no more cute discounts!” Faye’s attention was drawn to the younger girl, who had been watching the whole exchange from a few steps back. The darkening purple blush on her face matched Faye’s own red one.
“You’re no fun!” The Shil mock glared at her (step?)daughter, then turned back to Faye. “Seriously, though, as long as the mass and volume are small the cost to get this sort of thing here isn’t too bad. Say twenty percent. It'll be more if you want anything big or our buyer has to go to a specialty store, but we can do that too. It will still be a lot cheaper than trying to import anything yourself.”
“Twenty percent isn’t bad.” It was a great deal, honestly. Faye doubted they’d be doing much more than breaking even on her little orders. She closed her eyes for a second, clearing her mind. She could feel the spray canister in her bag, pressing against the inside of her arm. Its presence was reassuring. “Can I add an absolutely no flirting policy to our agreement?”
The woman nodded, suddenly looking abashed. “Sorry, I forgot Human women aren’t normally into other girls. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
Whether or not Faye was into girls was irrelevant, but she wasn’t about to get into an argument about it. Instead, she turned a few pages back and forth, adding a few more odds and ends to the list that she hadn’t been able to find in University City. Much of the list consisted of condiments and seasonings that might help make the Shil instant meals Faye had been purchasing a little more palatable.
By the time they were done, Faye had an order totaling a couple hundred credits and a promise that she would have her goods in three to four weeks. Before she left she made a point of stocking up on junk food and picked up a few English-language graphic novels that looked interesting. She rounded out the visit with a couple decks of playing cards. Tomorrow was game night, after all. She should be at least somewhat prepared.
