Here are all of the new US CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
There were 124 "new" CHAdeMOs added in May. To put it in perspective, there were 112 CHAdeMO chargers added in April. I think the pace of CHAdeMO rollout has stabilized, while the pace of CCS rollout is still increasing. This makes sense given that only Nissan still makes a CHAdeMO car.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
We all know that CHAdeMO is a legacy format and will eventually go away, but clearly Nissan and their partners are continuing to support it for the time being. This shouldn't be surprising. After all, you can still buy a new Leaf.

2023.06.06 12:32 boutell New US CCS chargers report for May 2023

Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.

With a few EVs (electric vehicles) now having 800-volt architecture which allows them to charge faster than the fastest Tesla on a 350kW CCS charger, and the increased presence of these DC fast charger locations on interstate routes, running a Cannonball Run in an EV has become possible with a wider selections of vehicles. Kind of.
The current EV record with a team was in a Tesla Model S Long Range with a time of 42 hours, 17 minutes (starting from NYC on October 22, 2021, beating the 44 hours 26 minutes of a Porsche Taycan team that did well despite driving in winter), and there are records for a solo driver (the 25h 55min claim in 2020 by Fred Ashmore looks to be fake but there have been solo drivers since Erwin ‘Cannonball’ Baker started it all) and there’s also a solo motorbike rider record (Alex Jones left the Red Ball Garage on Oct 17, 2021 and arrived at the Portofino 32 hours and 52 minutes later) - but there’s no record for a solo EV attempt on the Wikipedia page.
The closest I could find for a documented EV Run by a sole driver was this absolute hero, The London Broiler on YouTube. He took a 2019 Chevrolet Bolt (it barely charges at 50kW with a 60kWh battery pack and a top speed restricted at 90mph) from South Carolina to get to the starting line at the Red Ball Garage. He started at midnight, after driving for hours already, and it took him 78 hours and 59 minutes to finish his Run. He looks like he slept somewhere in Pennsylvania, at a truck stop in Illinois (just across the Indiana border and his entry into the Central time zone), and in Texas, just shy of the New Mexico (and Mountain time zone) border before driving through the day and into the night to get to the finish line pre-dawn the next day. He needed to charge at more locations than a car with a larger battery would need to, and with the slower charging speed it took him forever. But he did it, and provided proof.
What’s keeping the current best EV times high? Two things - the amount of energy a vehicle can hold to move it, and the speed to replenish that energy. Putting an additional 55-gallon fuel tank in the trunk of an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle that normally only has an 11 gallon tank is as technical as having a large container, some piping, and a switch to transfer fuel from the back-up into the main fuel tank. Gasoline’s a set density and it adds around 150kg / 330 lbs of weight for the fuel but that’s just the weight of a couple of adults. If you wanted the equivalent with current lithium ion technology for an EV, you’d have an EV that comes with a 77kWh battery trying to carry an additional 385kWh backup battery weighing 2.3 metric tonnes / over 2.5 US tons. Even if it COULD carry that, charging that backup would take a while too. Even if it could handle the full 350kW from a CCS charger (1,000 volts at 350 Amps), it would take over 45 minutes to charge it from 10% to 80%. No Lion battery should be charged that quickly because they have a habit of imitating a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 if you do. The future is Lithium-air batteries. It’s in its early stage and because it’s an energy density improvement it would be the equivalent of having that 55 gallon gas tank weighing the same as the current 11 gallon tank. Maybe, in future, someone will have configured an EV to swap out 500kWh Lithium-air battery packs and their run would involve coordinating teams in Cambridge, OH / Collinsville, IL / Mount Vernon, MO / Amarillo, TX / Gallup, NM / Needles, CA to pit-stop the swap. Get the replacements in place just in time for the Runners to swap out and drive on. Or maybe the future of vehicles will be going to a swap location run by Valero or Jiffy Lube.
But that’s all science fiction right now. What would a 2023 trip look like with a better EV? Using A Better Route Planner and comparing locations on Google Maps, I was able to plot a route that allowed a solo driver to charge exclusively at Electrify America locations (many new cars offer two years free charging on the EA network, meaning the trip can be done for less cost) and included sleeping breaks at Pilot / Flying J truck stops - they’re open 24 hours, people on long car trips park and sleep there all the time, they have rental shower rooms that you can reserve using their app that are really clean and have all the basics you’ll need (bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste).
Let’s start with day one. I’m going to put you in a Hyundai IONIQ 5 SEL with AWD (but you’ll be in Eco Mode so only the rear motor will be taking you on this trip). At 6am, you set off…

A quick word about the charging times: they are VERY conservative. An extra five minutes has been put onto each one in case there’s a line at one or two of the charging locations, or if you have to move the car from charger to charger because you’re getting an error message (this happens a lot less than it used to) - and if that takes you five minutes to plug in and touch the screen to start the ‘handshake’ between EV and charger, you may have rigor mortis.
The estimated times are totally overkill too - it assumes a slower charge caused by colder weather or a cold battery pack. There are ways to ensure you have a nice toasty warm battery to maximize your peak charge, even in below-freezing temperatures like 3ºF / -16ºC using a technique called “yo-yo driving” - accelerate hard, then slow using full regenerative braking, over and over for half an hour before the charging location to get the electrons shaking and flowing in the battery. You may arrive at the charger with less charge than projected doing that, but you’ll get up to your required level much faster.
And if you’re doing the Run in good weather the charge times will be way quicker than these estimates for each stop. That first charge in Allentown, PA (25% to 81%) should only take around 15 minutes if the battery’s at an acceptable 70ºF / 21ºC, 17 minutes tops including plugging in and the ‘handshake’. All those saved minutes add up. You may even decide to go further than the stated day’s end destinations as a result.
OK, that’s the science stuff over for now. There will not be a test.
By the end of day one, you’ve crossed from Eastern to Central time. As you progress westwards, and as your phone’s clock sets itself back an hour for each time zone, waking up at 6am local time becomes easier. I start each day at 6am local time, but starting day two in Missouri means it feels like 7am compared to yesterday. Your stop locations have the 24-hour shower facilities, so if you’re up earlier and you didn’t shower in the evening you can shower first thing and get moving before 6am.
These aren’t the only Electrify America locations en route, by the way. As you approach the Flying J in East St Louis, when your EV is at around 42%, there’s a Walmart in Collinsville, IL. It only has 150kW chargers, but if you want a head start on the next day you could charge up to 80% there in western Illinois, maybe walk over to the Wendy’s for something to eat and use the restroom as the car tops up, then continue on to the Flying J for a late shower and maybe even get up early enough to start at 5am Central.
Day two. We’re heading to Mountain time by the end of the day and that means a rise in elevation.

This is the longest day of driving, but there’s more ‘nothing’ to get through. Of all the states on a Run, these are the ones with the lowest population density. And getting into Mountain time means going up some pretty big elevations. Getting an early start for this second day may be advisable as you’ll be on the move or charging up for almost 18 hours. It makes the idea of getting showered at the end of day one and getting that early start all the more enticing.
It’s at times like this that you start looking at how many miles of range you can add for a set amount of time’s worth of charge, compared to how far you can drive in that time. If you’re at under 80% and you can get to a charger right off the interstate, the fact that you can add 50% of charge all told (exiting the interstate at lower speed, getting to a fast charger location if they’re immediately right there, getting back up another 50%, and driving back onto the interstate and getting up to speed again) in 20 minutes blah blah blah with lots of reciprocal fractions and algebra. But the charging locations aren’t right there in reality. They’re in a Walmart parking lot, at the side of a truck stop or a Denny’s restaurant or at the back of a La Quinta Inn that’s quite a way away from the main route. This is why trusting in the software and the algorithms is best if time is important (which it is for a Cannonball Run). A Better Route Planner takes distances and speed limits into account and can compare the variables for a trip of thousands of miles in a few seconds. Let the computer worry about that and you can worry about the driving.
But seeing as you’re adding more “miles of range per minute” when you ARE charging (compared to miles you could drive in that same time), you can shave a few minutes off by being slightly heavy in the right foot if you know it’ll knock off fewer percentage points of power than you have to spare. That’s where the EV teams have made up time: knowing they have enough charge to get from Weatherford to Erick if they hammer the throttle because the calculated use between those two stops is only 35% of a maximum charge and they start at 77%.
Day three, and it’s time to climb that hill to Gallup and back down, then up to Flagstaff near the Grand Canyon and back down, and up, and down, and up, before the slow descent from the Mojave Desert into California. And the finish line before the sun sets on the Pacific Ocean.
