2023.05.29 22:50 rubee_bee Give an absolutely delulu, museum obsessed rising junior a reality check pls šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€

Demographics: Asian šŸ’€ Female
Residency: NY šŸ’€ (arguably one of the worst areas for admissions besides cali)
Hooks: Mid-Sized Private High School, First-Gen
Income: <$60k šŸ’€
Intended Major(s): anthropology
SAT & ACT: not yet but plan on submitting
UW/W GPA and Rank: 3.9UW/4.6W Rank: Top 10%
Coursework: AP World (just took), APUSH, AP Bio, AP Lang
Awards: international thing w/ internship, psva, NLE gold, regional art comp, maybe girl scout gold??
Extracurriculars:
  1. Business internship (intern -> team lead -> staff)
  2. Law internship (intern -> team lead)
  3. Started tutoring program w/ my school and local elementary school
  4. Museum tour guide during summer
  5. FBLA treasurer
  6. Teen art council for museum
  7. Girl Scouts (senior leader rn)
  8. Varsity badminton
  9. JV soccer
  10. Editor for school newspaper
Additional Information
Def mentioning that I couldn't take 4 units of language because my school got rid of mine after 3. Not sure if I should mention extra small ecs like:
  1. Transcription volunteer for Smithsonian
  2. Latin club secretary
Essays/LORs/Other: Not yet lmao
Schools: List of colleges, ED/EA/RD, etc
Reaches: Columbia, Harvard, Vassar, NYU, Georgetown, Boston College, Barnard College, Brown, Notre Dame, Uchicago, Penn, Dartmouth, Duke, Yale, Princeton, JHU
Targets: CUNY Baruch, CUNY Hunter, SUNY Binghamton, College of the Holy Cross
Safeties: CUNY City College, SUNY Cortland, St. John’s U
Biggest issue for me is financial aid so I’m mostly applying to full need schools or publics in NY. So far, the ones I like the most are Columbia, Harvard, and Notre Dame. Columbia is right next to The Met, Notre Dame has a special Smithsonian program, and so many high-up staff members at The Met went to Harvard. Would love a reality check to see if I truly stand a chance at these schools. I know that without tests or writing it’s hard to guess but do I have a strong enough base of my ecs/gpa?
P.S. Not sure if this helps but I have a way of connecting my business/law ecs with anthropology

2023.05.29 20:52 One_Resolution_4762 Can I hire someone to build a computer for me and ship it? Who?

Currently, I have a pretty okay computer. I built it myself 3-4 years ago, and I definitely built it wrong, but I've dealt with it. Every time I turn it on It says that there is a CPU Fan Error, so I press F1 to run Setup, which leads me to UEFI BIOS Utility, where I then press F8 to go to the Boot Menu to select my SSD card, and then it works. The Graphics card rarely crashes when I'm playing, and it's a bit annoying. Basically, I'm ready for a new PC.I already picked out my parts; it should be a good setup. I am terrified to build it again, lol, because there are tiny issues I don't want to deal with again. Are there any websites where I can pick out the parts there, and then they build it for me and ship it to me?
Edit: I wanted to post the parts I picked it out. Input is appreciated : )

2023.05.29 20:34 TheQuestioner234 Reverse Chance me, please!

I'm not sure how to do a reverse chance me so please don't bash me too hard but here's my attempt at it.
Profile: Asian in the North East. Junior. Interested in going into the Pre-Med track for med school. I've talked with some faculty members of our local Med school and they've told me I've got a decent chance into their undergrad -> med school programs, though I'm not too confident in myself. I live in a small-medium sized town with a school size of about 1k.
Location: Maybe towards the North East, but I'm fine anywhere.
Size: Small-Medium
Intended Major: Biology (Pre-Med Track. I'm dead set in going into Healthcare.)
Colleges looked into: My parents really want me to go to an Ivy, though I doubt it'll happen. I've been trying to look into cheaper undergrads since I think it'll be best to save money if I decide to go into med school. I've mainly been looking into BS/DO programs and BS/MD's but need a good list of Safeties, Targets, and Reaches.
GPA: My school does it out of 100 and I am currently at a 95.3. After calculating it using the 4.0 scale it is around 3.79-3.88ish depending on whether schools include certain courses
(I have had 4 B's due to major depression and more during my sophomore year. 2 are 89s, 1 is an 88, and 1 is a 87 from this year's Calc 1. One of the 89s was from regular Chemistry which may look bad. Everything besides that is an A or above)
SAT: 1300 first attempt, trying to retake and get 1500 in August, Practice Tests have gotten me to 1470 so far.
Ranking: Top 10 percent out of a class of about 250
AP Courses/Course Load: Possibly 6 as my school only offers 7 with the one I'm not taking being art History. (I've been self studying for a few more, but I may not submit them if they're bad). I've been taking mainly DC courses as my school mainly offers them.
EC (all activites are from 11th grade besides the outside of school sports as COVID restricted a lot of things):
Yearbook Club: Marketing Manager + Treasurer
Mock Trial: Attorney + (Possibly secretary once elections end)
Debate Club: Treasurer (Possibly Secretary+ this year)
Multicultural: Member
(In School Orchestra: Wouldn't count it as it isn't really EC, but might get a position in it)
(National Honors for 12th grade possibly, maybe able to write it down)
Hospital Volunteering: Aiming for about 200 hours over the summer.
Winter Basketball: 10th grade, outside of school team
Spring Baseball: 10th grade, outside of school team
Hospital Shadowing: Possibly 44 hours over the summer? We aren't allowed to shadow until our Junior year. (4 hours shadowing EM Doc, 40 hours possibly in Clinical Lab)
Violin Trio (Junior Year)
Violin Quartet (Played at Senior Home, Sophomore Year)
Worked at my Parent's Business since Freshman Year
Awards:
3rd place regional mock trial
A music festival award (basically if you get above a certain grade you get it I'm pretty sure)
(Possibly AP Scholar depending on how scores end up, though I'm sure practically everyone has this)

(Honestly, I don't have too many awards)

LOR:
- Anatomy/DC Bio 1 and 2 teacher (8-10/10)
- English Teacher 11th Grade (8/10)
- APUSH Teacher (8/10)
- Counselor (8/10)

Please help me guys, I'm completely lost at this point and I don't know if I can make it anywhere ngl. I think those 4 B's will fuck me up along with having little Awards. I also think only doing EC's from 11+ for in school ones will mess me up. I'm just listing everything at this point and idk if it'll get me anywhere. Thanks for anyone who took the time to read this post!

2023.05.29 20:05 avocadotoast_8 any tips for incoming AP biologists?

I’m taking AP Bio next school year, and I’m wondering what I can do to prepare over the summer (summer break starts next week). My current plans are to read through the Princeton Review textbooks and maybe take a Khan Academy course, but I would be very grateful if anyone has other suggestions/resources I could use before class begins in August! :)

2023.05.29 18:51 J_sharpe1 Colleges for me that will give majority/full ride MERIT scholarships?

I’m a rising senior looking for possible colleges to apply to. I want to make clear that I will not qualify for any need-based aid and will need to get merit based academic scholarships.
Stats: - GPA 4.0/4.35 (sure to go up after senior year to around 4.4) - 5 APs (after I graduate), 1 DE, 9 Honors classes.
Tests: - ACT: 29 (I am retaking in June and maybe July hoping to get a 32 minimum) - APES is the only test I have received my score back for, I got a 4. - I have not yet received scores for AP Bio, AP Physics 1, AP Psychology, or AP Gov.
ECs (not much but it’s something) - Varsity Tennis - NHS - if it matters I have had a part-time job throughout high school as well.
Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!
Edit: I know about Alabama, I am planning on applying there, is there any other colleges you guys know about with large merit scholarships?

How hard is it to get into the health and med LLC when I have 86 for math and submitted my 5 for AP Lang and did pretty well on the world language test?
Also I want to take bio classes despite submitting my AP Bio exam. Will submitting my AP scores affect my acceptance?

2023.05.29 18:40 Ok-Opportunity-6612 Math placement test bad, but 5 on AP calc

Hi I am a Bio major and I have taken the ap calc test, pretty sure got a 5 or at least 4 on it, so does it really matter how I do on the placement test if I don’t even have to take the math course since I have completed the requirement.
I haven’t taken the placement test yet, but what are the topics that are covered on it, so I can prepare and revise.
Thanks.

2023.05.29 09:39 samborgir99 Where do you draw the graphs in an AP Bio exam?

Do they provide a seperate graph/grid sheet and does it have lines for subunits as well? Does your graph have to be so accurate that you have to get a decimal point correct? For example 33.'7' And can I use short forms like GC for guanine-cytosine to make my graph axis headings shorter?

I am an out of state 4-year university student who is trying to transfer to UF in the Bio-Pre Professional Major in CLAS. I have a 4.0 GPA but I have still not heard back. I submitted the app 4.18 but my AP scores only reached May 1st, so my application was only "completed" then. I still have not heard back and I heard that it is rolling?

2023.05.29 04:55 daveramsyismybff Self Study?

Would it be wise to self study AP Macroeconomics for my senior year?
I have previously taken AP Lang, Lit, World History, US History, and Psych. I have scored a 4 on both Lang and World History and expect similar scores for the other three exams.
Next year I will be enrolled in US Government, however, nobody knows which AP math and science classes will be offered (stats or calc AB and APES or bio).
I will also be involved in numerous organizations but nothing different from what I’ve done these past three years.
While I don’t have that much prior knowledge, I have placed at regional and state AcaDec competitions for economics.

2023.05.29 04:09 ireallyhateyuki Is it worth it?

Alright so my freshman year was the covid year and I unfortunately was hospitalized so my freshman grades were ruined like 1.2 and 1.4 ruined. However I have never received a grade lower than a B since ( 1 B actually and 29 A's) my gpa sophomore year both semesters was a 4.2 and this year junior year I got a 5.0 both semesters (graded on a 4 scale). I live in California so I was gonna apply to the UCs since they don't use freshman grades for gpa, however they don't take SAT scores which I received a 1560 on but with super scoring Im at a 1580. My overall is a 3.5 so I'm gonna graduate with honors even if I take basic classes next year. My schedule next year is gonna be Ap lit, Ap Econ, Ap bio, Ap Calc, Ap stats, and Yearbook (for a second year). Realistically will colleges even want me. I worked my way back up but is it even worth it at this point man. My top school is either UCSB or NYU

2023.05.29 02:13 mokkeroll chance me for college!

i’m new to reddit, so apologies if anything is formatted weird. i’ve already graduated high school (class of ā€˜23) and am currently taking a gap year for mental health reasons (i plan to discuss this, as it affected my academics and inability to participate in ecs for a while)
demographic: - 2nd gen korean, queer, upper-middle class, public hs
stats: - cumulative gpa: 4.57 weighted, 3.9 unweighted (will decrease a bit as final senior grades have yet to be updated. i got 2 B’s but other than that, there shouldn’t be any drastic decrease) - class rank: 35/535 weighted, 92/535 unweighted (again, will change a bit) - 10 APs: bio (3) freshman covid year; chem (2) and world (3) sophomore covid year; calc ab (4), apush (4), lang (5), and psych (5) junior year, and gov, econ, and apes senior year (did not take exams) - 7 honors/college-level courses - i have not taken the sat/act (i don’t plan on submitting scores) - i’ve only taken 2 years of foreign language (spanish) because i dropped out of spanish 3 my senior year for mental health. but i hope to compensate for this with the fact that i’m proficient in korean
ecs & awards: - ap scholar with distinction - honor student (achieved over 4.0) - choir (7 years, on choir council for 3 years as photographer, president, and stage manager respectively); performed at carnegie hall and many other locations and placed high in many choral competitions - speech & debate team (4 years, was social media director for a year and speech captain for 2 years; semi-finalist in 2020, placed 5th at 2021 stanford invitational, placed 9th in 2021) - placed 3rd in an essay contest on environmentalism - participated in student-run, zero-cost pandemic relief supply to unhoused and low-income communities - teacher’s assistant to teach korean language and culture to kids through hands-on activities (4 years); also had a year where i also taught basic coding to them - created website for accurate, accessible, and inclusive queer resources - local activism (such as joining local protests for blm, gun control, reproductive rights, etc.) - have secured an internship as teacher’s assistant at an elementary school for after summer break - planning on maybe traveling to do a work-away if i can? otherwise I’ll probably spend my time on some other project
interests: human rights/social justice, gender & sexuality studies, sociology
schools (I plan to cut the list down a bit): allegheny, amherst, bard college (ny), barnard, bryn mawr, conn college, dickinson, franklin & marshall, gettysburg, goucher, grinnell, macalester, mount holyoke, oxy, pitzer, scripps, smith, trinity college, union college (ny), uni of puget sound, wesleyan, and the uc’s (i live in cali)
any advice? i also welcome new school recs. thank you in advance!!
