I did 4 exams back in May (for my main issues) and I waived the last one yesterday for dry eye syndrome. It just wasn’t worth my time (2 hour drive and I would have to call off work). Do I need to let the VA know? Optumserve said the exam request gets send back to the VA explaining I declined exam but is that right?

If you live closer to South Florida and are thinking you have to travel to Arizona for Dr. Jaroszewski, Dr. Sheffield and team will do all ages, with a speciality of ages 25 and up if you qualify. He has done hundreds of the NUSS procedures, most under 25, but over 100 cases of people who are 30's, 40's, 50's and ages 60 upward. Dr. Sheffield trained at Mayo Clinic, AZ with Jk. and help develop today's procedures. Dr. Sheffield is extremely caring and concerned about the pain the NUSS procedure can cause no matter the age. He is also head of heart transplants and cardio at Cleveland Clinic, Weston, Florida. He knows his way around a chest and uses the same pain cryoablation that Jk. & Raymond do.
Weston Florida is 22 miles west from Ft. Lauderdale and 40 miles north of Miami. Both have International Airports and Cleveland Clinic, Weston has Pectus Excavatum patients from around the world.
Because of my age, 63 years of my Pectus Excavatum, which was the size of about one-third the depth it is at age 18, is extremely deep. (see attached photos)
Dr. Sheffield has done people in their late 70's and early 80's. I only wish I could have had surgery at an early age. Pectus has made my life a living psychological and embarrassing hell.
I have POTS and fibromyalgia. I also have a major very rare spine disease called Klippel-Feil. There are less than 5,000 known cases world-wide. Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a rather rare disorder that impacts your spinal bone growth and many other body parts. It caused me to lose all my teeth by age 36. KFS also causes limited range of motion in my neck and Low hairline at the back of your head with a shorter neck. The size and shape difference between the two sides of your face. My face doesn't match each side and I have instability of my upper cervical spine where it connects to my skull. KFS also involved many other parts of my body. This includes my heart and lungs, mouth, eyes and ears, muscles and nerves, spinal cord and other bones. KFS affects my kidneys, causing total kidney failure at age 56, requiring dialysis for three days on a ventilator to save my life. I enow have stage three kidney disease as a result.
I also have Spinal stenosis, Spinal scoliosis, and osteoarthritis. I will explain each condition.
Spinal stenosis the space inside my backbone is too small. This puts pressure my spinal cord and nerves that travel through the spine. I have Spinal stenosis in the lower back and the neck. I experience pain, tingling, numbness and muscle weakness. My symptoms have gotten worse over time. The Spinal stenosis my neck causes numbness, tingling and weakness in my hands, legs, feet and arms. I have problems with walking and my balance is off. I have neck pain and problems with my bowels and bladder.
Scoliosis do to a person? With most scoliosis cases, the spine will rotate or twist in addition to curving side to side. This causes the ribs or muscles on one side of the body to stick out farther than those on the other side.
The condition is characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, the tough but flexible tissue that covers the ends of the bones at the joints and allows smooth joint movements. One or more parts of the body can be affected, most often the hands, shoulders, spine, knees, or hips.
Osteoarthritis usually develops slowly, causing pain, stiffness, and restricted movement as the condition gets worse. Areas of bone no longer cushioned by cartilage rub against each other and start to break down. Further damage is caused as the body attempts to repair and rebuild these tissues. The immune system, which plays a role in healing injuries, targets these areas, and its response leads to inflammation of the joint tissues. Abnormal growths of bone (osteophytes) and other tissue can also occur, and may be visible as enlarged joints. Enlargement of the joints of the fingers is especially noticeable.
People with osteoarthritis typically experience stiffness following periods of inactivity such as upon awakening or rising from a chair; the stiffness usually improves as they move around. In some affected individuals, the condition never causes major problems. In others, severe osteoarthritis can impair mobility and the ability to perform daily tasks, affecting quality of life and increasing the risk of other health conditions such as cardiovascular disease.
Add in a painful joint disorder called osteoarthritis around the areas of fused bone and painful involuntary tensing of the neck muscles called cervical dystonia. I have had my cervical dystonia treated with 300 units of Botox every three months for ten years. Without the Botox, my head would lay to the left shoulder completely unable to hold my head up in a normal position.
I was born with cervical spinal bones in my neck fused at C-3 & C-4. This results in a shorter neck, low hairline, and limited mobility of the Cervical spine and entire spine. I have had a loss of height starting at age 40, with a loss from 6 feet to 5 feet 6 1/2 inches, loss of all Discs, and major back pain. Because of the height loss, and flared ribs, my stomach looks horrible, as all my soft organs are crowded into my stomach causing a major pot belly.
KFS causes weight loss without trying at times, going down to 140 lbs and weight gain taking me to as high as 240 lbs. This 100-pound swing causes havoc on your body. I have gone through the weight gain/loss at least 15 times over my life. KFS is a genetic condition. It’s congenital, meaning the disorder was present while I was in the womb and at birth. KFS also most likely caused my Pectus Excavatum. There is no cure for KFS.
Pectus Excavatum is killing me and I am going through the pre-surgical testing. I am being crushed and my bones are breaking. A rib broke in my back at age 43, just by pushing on a shelving unit. Since September 2022, my Clavicles and left shoulder blade have broken and are not repairable breaks, due to the severity of the breaks. My lungs are an extra six inches long and my left lung is smashed against my heart which has moved into the left lung space. I keep getting pneumonia that is extremely difficult to cure because of the chest bones crowding out my lungs. I have cracks in my sternum.
That is my story and NUSS surgery is a "maybe," at this point. My Pectus Excavatum has made my life a living hell and my take my life very soon as the bones are crushing my chest, heart and lungs.

Hello i have a problem with Blink RNGing in Collo... I don't care for any specific spreads and just want it to be shiny do I still need to manip my TID/SID? bc with 3-4h of trying I couldn't even get the espeon eyes to follow the "found seed" in OpenBlink I'm playing on a Wii with a german game... my specific target is togetic but wanted to try on an earlier target to see if it works without TID/SID maniping.

Rules remain the same as standard Siege with an important exception: the beginning of each round will randomly select 1 of 3 available capture points across the map, with new payload paths generated as a result. You will need to coordinate with your team to figure out strategies for each capture point. Alongside this, due to the sheer size of these maps, the respawn timer for attacking teams is set to 5 seconds, and remounting is enabled for all players.

Some important notes only for those who played Paladins when these maps existed years ago:

I am a (23f) who studies in final year dentistry. I have been struggling with performance anxiety and clinical depression since my first year in dental school. I failed in the 1st year which led to me getting 6 months drop from the original class I joined and later on I had to take another drop because of my father’s health conditions during covid time. And finally I was put in a regular batch where I made friends and was coping okayish. But unfortunately i failed 2 subjects in my final year and was given another drop of 6 months. I failed oral pathology and periodontics. My 3rd year oral pathology HOD has been consistently downright mean to me and even passed negative comments regarding my father’s health issues and my mental health issues. She thinks I’m acting an elaborate play or faking things to gain sympathy. She didn’t sign my journal coz I took a drop from 3rd year finals during my father’s hospitalisation days and later on when I was promoted to 4th year she agreed to sign my journal certificate. Unfortunately whenever I went to her, she kept sending me back or asking me to do corrections required and I did what I was asked to do. I must have gone to her more than a dozen times back and forth. She would call me during times when I was in lecture or in OPD or whenever I went, she wasn’t in her cabin. When I had to go meet her post taking drops to sort things out in 3rd year, She passed insensitive remarks regarding my father’s health condition saying how can a person be sick for such a long time. My father was suffering from acute necrotising pancreatitis which led to 20% necrosis of his pancreas and all the complications related to it along with 12mm kidney stone which caused him immense pain and he was in ICU for a long time as he also has diabetes and high blood pressure. I brought all the relevant documents about my father’s health and asked her to make a note that I wasn’t simple missing her classes because I am not punctual but because I need to be there for my family. She rejected seeing the reports by saying “I don’t want to see all this.” I told her she can have a talk with my mother but she still did not accept that and she again said she doesn’t want to have any talk with my family. She looked at me like I was selling her some sob story and sent me away. But her comments regarding my father’s health and the way she looked at me, led me to attempt suicide because she made me feel like its better for me to disappear than ever show my face to her. I tried hanging myself and my mom found me in the room doing that. My room has a key lock and she had the keys. After that I cried a lot and it took me a long time to recover. I gave my 3rd year finals and passed 2 out of 3 exams. I failed her exams and wasn’t able to answer anything because looking at her in the exam hall triggered those memories of me trying to kill myself and everything she has done or said or how I cried pathetically during my father’s hospitalisation time. So I wasn’t able to deal with all that and failed the exam. In 4th year I sat for the KT she gave me in her subject. The day before my practical exams, I had a major panic attack where I suffered from terrible chest pains and was not able to breath properly and kept shivering. I was taken to the hospital and given IV and medication to calm down. I was in the hospital till the evening and barely had time to study for her practicals. This time I passed the theory exam but I was failed in the practical exams. She threw my answer paper on my face when the external asked me questions and asked me how was my theory paper. I was answering her and she saw the bruises I got from the IV, injections and blood tests they did the night before. And the external asked me about the same and when I told her honestly, the HOD lady lost her shit and threw the paper on my face saying how dare I go around tell others she failed me when I am not worth of passing. She thought I was trying to gain sympathy from the external. She has been mentally harassing me this way since past 1 year and so much that I have PTSD and seeing her triggers me. I also had a massive panic attack during my Periodontics practical exam and fainted. I failed that exam. My father went to have a talk with my dean of the college and asked him about how my exams will be taken. He met my college mentor who asked me to meet her. I met her today and she asked me to sit for the classes and then said how all my peers have becomes intern doctors and I am still in final year 1st term. I came home and cried a lot. I felt its not worth living because I’ve been in a lot of mental pain since my first year of dental school. I have invested my whole teenage and everything to become a dentist and yet I keep getting slapped like this by my fate and made to struggle every single day. I am beyond heartbroken and depressed, if I get failed another time then I don’t know what I will do. The oral pathology HOD is responsible for passing people in practicals and if she fails me again I don’t know what to do. My parents tell me they understand my pain but they don’t. My father and I have regular fights about all this. I am so exhausted that even getting up from bed or closing my eyes feel draining. I have been constantly crying and dreaming about dying. I don’t know how to cope or manage anything and I can’t even put an official complaint against her as I am worried she may take it personally and fail me again. But the things she made me go through deserves her to be reported in the college. Worst part is she is a doctor herself and yet she bullied me like I am some insignificant vermin not worth being taken into any consideration. Someone please help me. I am so lost and in so much pain. My father said he will go and have talk with my HOD. But sadly during fights he shouts at me me and tells me about how going to my college and talking to the teachers and everyone there is him having to beg for me which hurts me a lot.

A few months ago, I had a Biology test on Digestion, I got Grade 2. But then it all changed when I had a Biology Test on the Heart, I did lots of revision, and trying different techniques, and I got a Grade 4 (Passing Grade). Then, I recently had a Biology End-Of-Year exam, and got Grade 6.
So I improved my Biology by 4 Grades in less than 3 months. I have beat my target grade, sure, it isn't as impressive as Grade 8 or Grade 9 (Maximum Grade) but knowing that I improved is all that matter.
NOTE: Tests have 9 Grades, where I'm from.

This narrative is based on a player, who chooses the class Berserker with boxing fighting style.
The player (you), after defeating the hooded figures around Djin ruins, rests up a minute, and walks up the stairs. On top of the stairs, you look to the right and see a structure, and in the center of that structure, there is a man, with shiny looking weapons, shiny armor, and has a black hair. This must be one of their leaders, you think.
You walk closer, hands in a fighting stance. The man turns around, and makes eye contact with you.
"So which one are you, a Cirrus Island rat, or perhaps an Azura envoy sent to seek revenge? Either way, you're too late. The Order already has Beringer and will soon have possession of not one, but two new Sea Curses."
You froze for a moment. "Perhaps I've said too much... no matter, you won't be leaving this island in one piece..."
In this moment, a chill runs down your spine. You clench your fists, ready to throw some punches, but this man… he stands calmly, unimpressed.
You run towards him, eager to land the first punch. At just the first step, he swiftly reaches a weapon on his back. In an instant, a spear is on his hand. Your feet are not on the ground yet, but the spear has already reached you. It's too fast to dodge, and it lands a clean hit on you.
"You're far weaker than the strongest boxers I fought…seems like this would be easier than I thought…"
Lucky for you, your armor absorbed most of the impact, and the spear only made a shallow wound. Without hesitation, you crash towards the man. You close the distance quickly, and before he could react, you landed a hit.
He jumps onto a pillar nearby. "Not bad, seems like I can't defeat you in one shot." Halfway through the words, you smash towards the pillar, eager to catch him off guard.
He grabs his scimitars and instantly blocks your attack. But the pillar crumbles, his legs loses balance and falls to the ground. You land a punch, but he jumps away as soon as you try to land another.
Out of nowhere, he crashes in with his scimitars, you couldn't see it, and it strikes on target. You immediately look around you to spot him, but all of a sudden, he lands toward you from above, dealing a massive strike that slams you into the ground.
He tries to cut your head off, but you avoid the hit just in time, and with two feet on the ground, you threw a flurry of punches.
He tries to defend with his scimitars, but your punches are too fast for him to swing his weapons, forcing him to jump away once more.
You look around and saw him on a pillar, he pops a healing potion and drinks it.
"I must outsmart this guy somehow" you think, and the spear comes to mind. Instead of crashing him right away, you waited for a moment. Your instinct is right. He immediately dashes to get his spear, and you crash in that direction. He got slammed against the wall, and you smash him, dealing considerable damage to him.
He jumps away, without the spear on his hand. You anticipate that he will rush with his scimitars, and make a blocking stance. Surely enough, the scimitars hit the gloves, and you saw him disappear once more. You instinctively look up, and in the right moment, you parried his attack.
There is a look of frustration in his eyes. You threw a flurry of punches at him, knowing it's your turn to attack. He jumped away again, but it seems like he isn't preparing an attack.
"I didn't think I'd have to use my full power against the likes of you... Prepare to die!"
At that moment, the sky started to rain, and a blast of lightning appeared from him, revealing a magic circle on his back. He fires a lightning beam onto the sky, and the beam lands on himself, causing lightning veins to run all over his body. The sky turned dark, but the lightning makes him look clear as day. His eyes are bulging, seemingly enraged by you.
Adrenaline rushes in your body. You are prepared to fight or die.

Salazar Ishtar's golden eyes danced from one edge of the expansive dungeon to the other, taking in all that he had just acquired. Before the once-banished demon hybrid stood a myriad of treasures, all thought to be lost to time but discovered using knowledge from an old world. Whispers amongst the denizens of the demon realm spoke of a ghastly shadowy figure, akin to the Grim Reaper, who would stalk living beings up until their demise, and then rob them of their worldly possessions. Whether it was to doom the newly departed spirits so that they could never pay Charon the Ferryman, or the ghoul was simply the manifestation of Earthly greed, it didn't seem to matter now. Salazar pushed his jet black hair out of his eyes as he took a seat upon a golden throne that likely belonged to a King that was de-throned, only to be robbed by the Vanity Phantom.

However, the location of this treasure, along with its subsequent discovery and acquisition was not all Salazar's handiwork. Instead, he had his quarrelsome harem of women, infamously known across the lands as "The Vixens of Babylon," to thank for the current treasure he stood before. Their powers of seduction, stealth, and infiltration were only matched by their brutality, ambition, and cunning natures. One may find this claim hard to believe due to the constant quibbling and petty disagreements that Salazar would often sort out himself. While Zera, the Cleric, was the de-facto leader of the group (obviously under Salazar's direction), she would still defer to him when it came to putting each Vixen in their place and redirecting their pent up energies into practical training regiments. Even so, the very real fruitful results of their excursions led to the evolution of Salazar's goals and as a result, more powerful targets. Rarer treasures to fund their travels, stronger foes to beat, and his ultimate goal: getting revenge on the Wizard who had banished him, having dubbing Salazar the "Bastard Hybrid of Babylon."

This banishment lasted a millennia, and it was Zera who had discovered this ancient injustice and completed the daunting task of returning Salazar to this Earthly realm. Once summoned, Salazar was obligated to fulfill a single wish, and when Zera wished for him to lead her to the Vanity Phantom's treasures, their journey began. Taking lead on the journey, Salazar made the executive decision to form a team.

The firsts to be tested and recruited were Alice, the Warrior, and Anastasia, the Archer. The two would butt heads often, and had a powerful rivalry that Salazar would redirect into games and contests for them, finding that these brought out the best in both of them. It was the result of their stubborn natures that had completely obliterated the other candidates, resulting in both of them earning a spot on the Team.

Finally, there was Jade, the Rogue, who had been caught trying to rob the team. Admiring her tact and skill, Salazar added her to the team. More often than not, her dark and almost demonic aesthetics and demeanor held an allurement that even Salazar was unable to resist. Perhaps this bred resentment and jealously amongst the other Vixens, but Salazar was not shy or private about keeping her close to him at all times. Referring to her as his pet, he even organized an entire mission just to obtain an enchanted Vantablack collar for her to wear. The enchantment made it double as a tracking spell that Jade can enact with Zera's assistance.

Salazar sat back as the Harem frolicked amongst the treasure. He would allow them their fun before issuing any orders or providing insight as far as what their next journey would be. As usual, Alice and Anastasia were fighting over which treasures were the best and brightest while Zera attempted to subdue them while attempting to study the magical properties of some of the artifacts. Jade found her way seated beside Salazar's new throne, not joining the others until he did.

District 8
Hermosa Romular and Juan Torres stood in front of the bowls, and both seemed a bit antsy.
Hermosa looked up at a peacekeeper, who nodded, before reaching her hand into the female bowl. Hermosa removed the name of seventeen year old Cambrica Strange. A scream of horror was heard as a girl with blonde curly hair and blue eyes walked to the stage. Cambrica tearfully shook Hermosa’s hand. Cambrica worked in a rug factory, and still attended school as well.
Juan then selected a slip of paper from the male bowl, and called out the name of Sheath Murdoch. A sound was heard from the fifteen year old sector as a boy with brown hair and brown eyes walked to the stage, and shook Juan’s hand. Sheath worked in a denim factory.
In the town hall, Cambrica was visited by her older brother, Beige. She cried as Beige rattled off as much advice as he could, and she was soon taken away.
Sheath was visited by his parents, and younger brother Spot. Sheath told his parents the location of some money he had hidden, before being taken to the train.
On the train, Cambrica and Sheath met their mentor, Coutura Bell, who had sworn to stay on as mentor until a victor won. She taught Cambrica and Sheath how to throw knives, but informed them that their odds were low, as they were from a weaker District. Both had determination in their eyes.
Coutura continued to train the two at the apartment, and as the parade was now cancelled, no stylist was due to visit.
The next day, Coutura showed District 1’s reaping, claiming that District 1 also produced some fashion.
District 1
Hermosa and Juan were now in District 1, and Hermosa reached into the female bowl, removing the name of twelve year old Rubie Jones. Loud screaming was heard before hand was thrust into the air and a voice volunteered. A girl with long golden curls of hair and blue eyes walked to the stage, and shook Hermosa’s hand. The young lady introduced herself as seventeen year old Elle Jones, the older sister of Rubie.
Juan then reached into the male bowl, and chose the name of eighteen year old Carnelian Fontaine. A gasp was heard as a tall, muscular male with ebony skin and shaved black hair walked to the stage, and shook the hand of Juan.
In the town hall, Elle was visited by her sister Rubie, and two older brothers, Lord and Scabal. She tearfully hugged all three of them, and promised to try and return.
Carnelian visited with his two younger sisters, Morgan and Pratima, and his younger brother, Glint. Carnelian promised to try and win and return with the prize money in order to support his family, before being taken to the train.
On the train, Amethyst Taylor (Game 3) was already drunk when the two tributes entered the corridor. Amethyst was now 25, and she asked the two several personal questions about their families, and appeared sympathetic to them.
She asked them to show her their skills, and watched the two throw spears, giving occasional advice. Carnelian had to help Amethyst off the train upon arrival at Snow Station.
Training
Elle and Carnelian threw spears at targets, and appeared to try and ignore Marcia and Julianus (both 2) who tried to tease them. Meanwhile Cambrica and Sheath threw knives, and watched Computia and Circ (both 3) work with tasers.
Bayla and Marius (both 4) swam in the pool, while Neela (5) and Surry (6) worked in the camouflage station. Mahogany (7) worked hard throwing axes, while Rya and Chive (both 9) hid in the cultivation station. Lucio (10) and Rosalita (11) exchanged information in the plant station, while Jim (12) worked in the medical station.
Assessments
Elle scored a 9 for a spear throwing display, while Carnelian scored a 10 for one that was slightly better. Cambrica and Sheath both scored 7s for knife throwing displays.
Other strong scores included Marcia (2) scoring a 9 and Julianus (2) also scoring a 10, while Computia (3), Marius (4) and Mahogany (7) scored 8s.
The weaker scores included Neela (5) and Rya (9) scoring 3s.
Odds
Elle had odds of 4 to 1, while Carnelian had odds of 3 to 1. Cambrica and Sheath had odds of 8 to 1.
Interviews
Euphemia Demigloss was back again, and she wore a pretty orange dress. Elle was up first, and she answered questions about her life in District 1, before steering the conversation over to her family. Elle spoke of how she volunteered for her sister Rubie, because Rubie was too young and innocent to compete.
Carnelian spoke of needing to support his younger siblings, and how he took tesserae. Tears filled his eyes as he spoke of just wanting to return home.

Olá gente, estou no início dos meus estudos de HTML/CSS, estou fazendo um modelo de landing page para meu portifólio e fiz um tipo de legenda no footer da minha pagina que fica oculto e aparece quando passo o mouse sobre o footer. Essa parte fiz de boa, mas quero fazer com que essa legenda fique do lado esquerdo, sem ter qque usar padding ou margin, porque ppode não ficar responsivo. Já tentei usar o text-align mas não funciona. Vou deixar o trecho do código para verem aí. Se alguém puder me ajudar agradeço.

So I'm in my early 40's, and for my whole life, I'd say I've been very coordinated. My hand-eye coordination is good, my reflexes are good, my balance is good, depth perception good.
Lately, like over the past year or two, I've been noticing something of a degradation in the spatial awareness department. I bump into stuff sometimes now. I'll smack my hand on a table edge as I walk by. I'll almost miss a step and have to catch myself. I knocked over a glass. I don't even remember the last time I knocked over a drink before then... I was probably a child. I know some people will probably read this and think "So what?", but it's just noteworthy because for the past 20+ years of adulthood I have never really had these issues. While they're minor, they are a sign that something seems to have changed. Personality-wise, I haven't really noticed any changes. No memory loss that I have noticed, no cognitive decline at work, etc... Just the physical stuff.
I thought maybe I needed new glasses but my eye exam produced the same prescription.
I'm already making a dr. appointment and will suffer the embarrassment if he just tells me I'm getting old and it's normal, but I was curious for some anecdotal evidence: Is this just what getting old is like? Anyone else ever experience this?

2023.06.08 16:15 lets-split-up I went on a cruise, and one passenger didn’t belong…

I’ve seen bodies mashed, crushed, dismembered, stuffed into suitcases, blackened like meat on a grill, floating, bloating, with flies swarming their flesh and maggots wriggling out of their eyes. I have, in short, an intimacy with death.
But nothing prepared me for the horror in cabin 4044.
I stared at my own smoldering corpse, into the blackened sockets of my melted eyes, and ice raked my spine and splintered my bones, shivering all the way down to my frozen fingertips.
You knew this day would come, whispered a voice in my head. And then, as my nose wrinkled, Ugh, I smell like bacon.
Giggles. Oh dear. Not beneficial. Couldn’t I try to approach my death with some dignity? No? Well… fine. Ignoring my own bubbling hysteria, I held my napkin over my nostrils and leaned in. Cross-legged in a lotus position, hands cradled and thumbs touching, crispy me (hehe) held the pose of a meditating monk. From the liquor bottles scattered around the burnt wreckage as well as the pose, I’d started the fire myself. But what induced such madn—
Glowing white light suddenly emanated from the blackened sockets. I gasped, tumbling backwards over the coffee table.
When I sat up, the light was gone.
It did not reappear during the half hour I charged my phone, keeping one leery eye on my corpse while I used the ship’s spotty wifi for research.
A Mysterious Contagion
According to Google, the worst cruise disaster in modern times involved the partial capsizing of a vessel after a captain’s error led to a rock tearing open the hull. Of the four thousand passengers, 34 drowned.
Another ship infamously dubbed the “poop cruise” had its engines catch fire, and passengers were stranded for nearly a week on board without electricity or toilet facilities.
But the Seastar was not destined for any ocean or weather related incident, but rather, a contagion. And while coronavirus and norovirus have both afflicted cruise ships in recent years, no virus—not even rabies—could explain the self-mutilation. To say nothing of the virulence. A mortality rate of 100%? That was unheard of in nature. There should be some survivors, if only by happenstance.
Or is it because…
A terrible chill spread up the flesh of my arms, and a thought lodged like an ice pick in my skull: What if the doom of the Azure Seastar isn’t happenstance—but deliberate? Are there no survivors because someone doesn’t want there to be?
Numb at the implication, I set down my phone. But how? Why? A thousand passengers and crew… If there was someone planning such a disaster, how would I identify them? And why would anyone commit such an atrocity? My gut tightened, and I got up and ventured out to the upper decks.
Deck 9
Cold. Cold. Cold. The chill in my bones deepened with each hand I brushed. Passengers glared as I fumbled around, dismissing me as either blind or mentally feeble. The blindness was somewhat accurate—I couldn’t see under the electric lighting in the swanky interior, since my eyes were seeing six days in the future, when the Seastar would be plunged into blackout. I depended on my phone’s feeble flashlight as I navigated the sea of guests around the bar and lounge areas. But no matter how many arms and hands I bumbled into—COLD!
With no accidental survivors, I was becoming more and more convinced the Seastar’s doom must be deliberate, but I was still very much in the dark—literally and figuratively—about why.
The most useful discovery of the evening came after my collision with a heavyset older man whose drink I spilled. Noticing me sweeping around my phone’s pitiful beam and assuming I’d lost something, he offered to lend me a more powerful flashlight from his cabin.
“It’s one of those high powered ones if you want it.” He smiled, and I stared, every hair on my neck standing on end.
“Uh… Something on my face?” His smile turned into a confused frown under my phone’s light.
“N-no. Yes, a flashlight would be very helpful, thank you.”
“This way. Name’s John, by the way.” His grin returned.
Oh God—I’d recognized him. Glass chewing man. He had a name now.
I am ashamed to admit that I tried not to speak to him too much on the way to his cabin, despite his doing me a kindness. It’s so much harder to face death with names and histories attached. I remained standing outside his cabin door, looking incredibly guilty as he emerged and set into my hand the flashlight. When I turned it on, it sent a floodlight straight down the corridor one end to the other. In addition to this useful tool, the encounter brought a critical insight.
His clothes. Glass chewing involved a different outfit. So, the catastrophe would not strike tonight.
Pool deck
After brushing roughly a billion COLD hands, as the overnight crowd began thinning, I took myself out to a lounger (being unwilling to overnight in my cabin wreathed in the fumes of my own chargrilled corpse).
Voices woke me in the dead of night.
The moon and stars offered the only illumination over the pitch sea, and I shambled groggily to the rail. It struck me that the wind had died—the Seastar was stationary.
Out on the pale peaks of waves, a rescue craft bobbed up and down.
“Looks like some idiot went overboard,” complained a voice behind me.
A cluster of passengers had gathered. One—with the authority of an experienced cruiser—mentioned the possibility of a suicide jumper. “It shouldn’t affect our itinerary much,” declared the man. “These things happen at sea, you know. After the rescue, he or she—let’s call them Passenger X—will be taken to the infirmary and monitored by security…”
I didn’t hear the rest of his words, because I was too busy smacking my forehead as I burst, “The INFIRMARY!” Good fucking gracious, was my brain already barbecue? I suspected a contagion, yet hadn’t thought to search the infirmary? Snatching up my flashlight, I headed downstairs, but the lower decks were cordoned off.
A jovial crewman explained that passenger access was restricted during rescue operations.
“Also, it’s three in the morning,” he added, sipping coffee from a styrofoam cup. “The infirmary will open—I think around eight?”
“Which deck?”
“Deck two.” He gladly explained the layout when I asked. The lower decks also included crew quarters, a crew lounge, mess hall, the engine room, kitchens, food storage, the “highway” used for quickly trafficking trolleys from one end of the ship to the other, the infirmary, various machinery rooms, a brig, a morgue—“We mostly use it for like, chilling flowers and stuff like that though,” he added with a grin. There was also a third staircase near the stern of the ship—the aft stairwell—used regularly only by staff but opened to passengers in cases of emergency.
As he rattled off this list, I could feel myself plunging deeper into despair. This ship was so enormous, and so much of what lay below was off limits to passengers. Furthermore, there were no windows below! How was I going to make my way in the blackout? Even with John’s flashlight, the prospect was daunting.
But first things first, Cass, I told myself. The infirmary.
Infirmary
At 8am sharp I stepped into the infirmary. The waiting room was as ordinary as they come, complete with boring magazines and cheap office chairs and—because it was deep in the interior—pitch dark to my sleep-deprived eyes.
“Morning, Sweetie! How can I help you today?” The secretary at the front desk tipped her head toward me, revealing a glimpse of another face beneath my flashlight—mouth gaping and mangled, every tooth pulled out. Blissfully unaware that she was sharing her chair with her own corpse, the secretary smiled and gave me a clipboard of paperwork for check in.
While I filled out the forms by flashlight, footsteps shuffled near the desk, and the secretary struck up a conversation with someone I assumed was a nurse. My ears pricked when they gossiped about last night.
“… did you hear about the rescue? When they pulled him out of the water, he wasn’t breathing...”
I pretended to be engrossed in the forms.
“… As soon as they revived him, he started screaming and screaming.”
“Oh my god… seriously?”
“Yeah, and he was like, super aggressive. They had to sedate him.”
“Oh my god…”
“It’s really weird… they’re saying he might have come from another ship, and it might’ve been, like… days… that he was out on the water!”
So this Passenger X who was pulled in last night had just been drifting out on the ocean? He wasn’t a jumper? And he was “screaming and screaming”—like, perhaps, someone maddened? I was about to abandon my forms and search for this Passenger X when the secretary all but gave me a heart attack by materializing in front of me out of the dark. She took the paperwork and informed me the nurse was ready. I was directed to a small examination room—one of three, I noted as I swept my beam around the infirmary. Examining tables, chairs, computers. No sign of any screaming passenger. Where would they have brought him?
The nurse, a young woman in a hijab, asked me the typical questions, typing my responses into a computer with a cracked, dead screen.
“Is he all right? The man who was rescued?” I asked. “Was he drifting long?”
She responded pertly, “We’re still trying to ascertain. But don’t worry, he’s being helped—um….” Her brow scrunched as she shone a light into each of my eyes.
Of course. I forgot to warn her.
“That’s so strange…” she murmured. “Are you wearing contact lenses?”
“No. My eyes are very black. Even under a flashlight they don’t reflect any light. They’ve been that way since I was four years old. I was dead for nearly an hour from drowning, but revived, and everything came back normal except for my eyes.” I’d always believed my horrific visions were the result of my near-death experience, as if I wasn’t supposed to come back, and brought a little bit of death with me, just in my eyes.
“Wow! What a wild story!” The nurse exclaimed.
“You have no idea,” I replied, looking at her corpse peering out at me from under the examination table, all jammed around the base.
A knock on the door cut our exam short before I could warn her (not that it would make any difference). She asked me to wait for a few moments and stepped out.
When she did not immediately return, I slipped away in search of Passenger X.
Highway
The moment I stepped out of the infirmary and away from the nearby elevator lounge, it became evident I’d left the passenger areas. All veneer of luxury was stripped away, leaving bare walls interrupted only by occasional stacks of boxes. The flashlight’s wide beam swept along the massive corridor that I was guessing was the “highway.” My footsteps resounded on concrete. Nothing but sterile, windowless white—or at least it had been white, once.
I tried not to look too closely at the crimson streaking the walls or the corpses I stepped over. The origin of the contagion was definitely down here. Even through the napkin held over my nose, I could taste death here—
Hello? What was this?
In one section of the corridor, the walls and floor had rippled. Almost as if a shockwave had left indentations, bending and shattering the concrete. But what could have done that?
The lights flickered.
I froze.
It wasn’t my flashlight’s beam. That remained steady. The lights—the overhead lights—flickered, casting the hall in blinking flashes of crimson streaks and white walls.
Then the lights came on.
All the bodies vanished.
“Oh,” I said, blinking against the sudden brightness. “Oh.” The smell was gone, too. No scent of death. Though there was something else. A strangely metallic, tangy smell. Like lightning and copper.
I shut off my flashlight, turning a slow circle as I gawked at the stark white walls, the flat gray floor, the dazzling fluorescent lighting so bright it almost blinded me. It struck me that I was seeing the ship right now. Not six days in the future, but NOW, before the blackout, before the outbreak. The same whitewashed hallway as all the other passengers saw.
Why? What had happened to my vision? Had I lost my special sight? Or—
Someone was standing in the corridor.
I froze.
The hairs on my neck prickled, and a knot of dread twisted my gut.
The man stood halfway down the highway, slouched and bedraggled. His clothes were crushed and faded, hanging off him like from hangers of bone. His limp hair draped in messy curls around his unshaven face. And his eyes—those eyes! The same eyes I’d seen looking at me from the deep end of a public swimming pool when I was just a child. The same eyes I’d seen staring emptily from John’s glass-chewing corpse, and from the mangled nurse under the table. All the dead have the exact same look in their eyes. One glance at those pale blue orbs—
This man was dead. I was certain of it.
Yet he was standing.
“You,” I said. “You… are you the passenger who—”
The dead man’s lips spread, baring teeth in what might have been a sick imitation of a grin, or a grimace.
“HEY!!!”
I jumped as a voice called out behind me.
An officer in a security uniform strode out from an unmarked door, eyes on the dead man. The security officer said, “Ma’am, stay back.” His gaze never left the dead man. “Sir, if you could please come with me—”
“No!” I cried. “Don’t!”
But the security officer was already marching forward, and the dead man’s hands lifted in stiff parody of surrender. He turned and began shuffling away under the officer’s escort. And then—his teeth bared. Suddenly the dead man had his arm around the officer, mouth clamping on his ear as the officer howled. He was eating him—no, tongue wriggling—licking him?
—whispering?
The officer shoved the dead man aside and collapsed against the wall. I rushed forward, but skidded to a halt as the dead man’s grinning face turned toward me. Terror seized me at the sudden revelation that I was next. He took a wobbly step—
The lights shut off.
Swearing, I fumbled for my flashlight. Switched on the beam. Shrieked when it fell across a hand—but it was just the security officer reaching for me, asking, “Hey—hey, are you all right, Ma’am?” He winced, rubbing at his ear like a dog bothered by a whistle only it could hear. Then he said into his phone, “He assaulted me and got away. I’ve got another passenger here—”
The stench wafted back. Gore once again splattered the walls. I was once more seeing six days into the future, and clapped my napkin to my mouth to stop myself from retching at the return of the smell. But I wasn’t really thinking about all that.
No, because my heart slammed my ribs and my breath ripped ragged from my throat, and every hair stood on end as if I’d been struck by lightning. Whatever it was the crew of the Seastar had hauled from the ocean, it certainly hadn’t been living when they “rescued” it. And the proof was in those overhead lights. Merely being in proximity to Passenger X, my vision had been pulled into the present. Like he was a magnet drawing my sight into his field. But if death was the thing my black, lightless eyes usually glimpsed, then what exactly was Passenger X? And if he could affect my vision, not to mention animating a dead man’s corpse… how was I going to have any hope of stopping him?
