Hello there everyone! At the behest of Marathon’s sole moderator u/cookedbread : myself and several other moderators have been imported from Destinythegame to help: u/RiseofBacon u/Mastershroom u/IAmNot_ARussianBot u/HeyItzSteve u/Mrfoxuk u/Shabolt_ (me!)
Our goal is to not step on the toes of what makes this subreddit special, but just prepare it for the already encroaching swarm of new members who want to see what Bungie’s Newest Old IP is really about. We have already added post flairs and u/cookedbread is in the process of adding rules to help make the subreddit experience more bearable.
I do want to stress though, although we may have come from DTG, the last thing we want is to make this place a clone of that, Marathon is a franchise with a rich community that many of us have adored since before Destiny even existed, and that community deserves the respect of being listened to and having their subreddit be able to suit their specific wants and needs like any other.
u/cookedbread will continue leading the charge on keeping this place Marathon (and keeping out marathon runners who get lost here on occasion)
We hope to soon add better bot support, utilise the subreddit wiki for an easier browsing experience, and most importantly just continue loving the franchise alongside you all!

Yesterday, I got blown up on /destinythegame for suggesting that Bungie take time from the end of the season to manage their maintenance, instead of taking that time out of the starting season. I wanted it to be a mostly lighthearted suggestion, but I could see from my last post that a lot of people were caught up in the minutia of the plan, how it would affect people unfairly, and a couple other things. I wanted to bring this possibility here as well, to see if there's any sort of disproportionate response based on the subreddit I'm asking. Let me start with a revised opinion with some details that will hopefully make more sense to everyone:

Could bungie plan seasons to be one day shorter, so they have a 24 hour window to do their maintenance and release the new season on time more consistently?

Now some answers to some of the biggest concerns last time:

What about all of the people playing at the end of the season? They'll be blindsided by the season ending early and can't finish their challenges/bounties?

The goal of this is not to blindside anyone. The goal of this would be that this is known at the start of the season, allowing people to plan around the new end date. It's not supposed to be a surprise to anyone, and the people who have tighter schedules will be able to plan better around when to play, since the scheduled downtime will be more accurate. No more will there be people who only have 1-2 hours free to play, scheduling it at a certain time, only for that time slot to be eaten away by unscheduled maintenance extensions that go 4 extra hours.
Additionally, as I mentioned to a lot of people yesterday, there are significantly more players playing (or trying to play) at the start of a new season compared to the end. Feel free to go check steamcharts if you don't believe me, here are the graphs that I looked at: https://imgur.com/a/uSQ73ax. That's 100,000 more players playing when the season dropped than the peak over the last 24 hours before then. That's more than double the amount of players playing when the season drops. A vast majority.
Everyone who said this is still right - this isn't a perfect solution for everyone. There will never be a perfect solution for everyone. Having the season drop on time when bungie says it will is just the best solution for the most people.

You'd really prefer 24 hours of downtime instead of 4 hours of downtime?

Yes, I would. For those of you calling me "selfish" for answering this from my perspective after you asked specifically what I would prefer, I'll elaborate this time to why I think it's better for the community. If you have nothing but free time, and all you want to do is play destiny, then yes - excess uptime with sporadic downtime will be better for you. However: most of the reasons that I saw people complaining yesterday were arguing: "What about people with kids and jobs and life events that they can't reschedule/avoid?" For those people, excess uptime will not necessarily increase the amount of time they can play, if they cannot plan around it. The people with the busiest lives will need to plan their time more particularly.
This is obviously still a case-by-case basis, as everybody's lives are different, but in my experience I'm able to maximize my game-time by knowing better when the servers are up and down. For everyone that I've played with, excess information has been significantly better than excess uptime. The 20 hour difference in a 24 hour window feels a lot more like a 2 hour difference if you're in a different time zone than the release time, and you can only play for a brief period, and then you have to sleep and have to work in the morning.
On the contrary: if the game is down the 24 hours before - I can know months ahead that is happening, I can plan my gameplay around not playing destiny, and I can feel good about dedicating time to play at the start of the next season because I know that it will be ready. I don't have to be wondering how much time I'll actually have to play or if I should bother planning for it.
What some of you may have forgotten while you're being Bungie apologists is: it's not standard for a 3.6 BILLION dollar company to be unable to provide accurate downtime windows. I cannot think of a single other game that (keyword:) ROUTINELY extends maintenance by multiple hours. I can think of several that extend by maybe one hour every 4-5 patches/maintenance cycles, but no other company that CONSTANTLY has issues with their downtime estimation. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL THING. IT'S COMPLETELY REASONABLE FOR US TO ASK BUNGIE TO GET THEIR SHIT TOGETHER AND HAVE GOOD DOWNTIME ESTIMATIONS.
I would certainly rather have only 4 hours of downtime compared to 24 IF I COULD TRUST BUNGINE TO ACTUALLY KEEP IT WITHIN THAT 4 HOURS. My plan is a means for bungie to get some trust back from the playerbase because they consistently have been screwing up outside their estimations. They can reign the time back in when they are better at knowing how long it will take.

What about players in other countries/time zones?

I mean first: they already get screwed because bungie schedules their current downtime around US timezones, so I don't understand how this hurts them any more. Additionally: if the game goes down 24 hours before it usually does, everyone can expect it to be down at the same time as usual, just one day less. Unless there's something that I'm missing here - in which case feel free to inform me, but I don't believe this will impact any time zone discriminately.

And Finally...

To the rest of you, who simply wanted to attack me personally over my last post, I don't really care. Nothing you said convinced me that this is a bad plan. My goal here is to understand why this isn't an option that Bungie is taking advantage of. The best counterargument I've heard so far is that: having 24 hours of downtime is better than having 4 hours of downtime.
I think that's a fair take, but I haven't seen enough of a trade-off that validates it. My main point is that I just want Bungie to get their shit done on time. I don't WANT 24 hours of downtime, I don't think anybody WANTS that in a vacuum, I just think it's better than the alternative of having no idea how long it will take for Bungie to get anything done. I'd be more than happy to post a follow-up in agreement with the current system if someone convinces me instead of attacks me.

Sorry to break it to you there's both. Like gaming is so toxic that there was a new sub made called Gamingcirclejerk . DestinyTheGame has LowSodiumDestiny . etc.
Also seen plenty of mods on here who are no better then discord mods memes. Smother subreddits till they die. completely one sided conversations.

Twitter just has a history of toxicity.

so does reddit. reddit, twitter and imgur were all the same type of users. Then twitter (thanks to its owners) turned it into a heavy left leaning platform with tons of censoring and imgur turned into a far left site that killed itself.
