2023.06.10 21:19 bosunphil Well, I made it! (on safe mode)

NOTE: This was a lot longer than expected, and will be very boring for anyone who hasn't played the game as it's about 90% spoiler tags. I personally find spoiler tags very satisfying to click on though, so enjoy!
I just finished the game now and, wow... what a game. I love games that leave you sitting and thinking at the end (and several times throughout) and one of the only other games that has felt so profound to me was Outer Wilds. That game set a very high bar for game narrative for me, and I've found it very hard to scratch that itch again. This game was right up there with it. In fact, for most of the game I had the same feeling of unease that I had during a particular place in Outer Wilds: Dark Bramble
I liked safe mode because I could explore, and while I found the monsters creepy, I just went straight up to them as soon as I saw them to get rid of that tension and see what they would do if I was near them. This helped me feel more comfortable exploring as I generally steer clear of horror games. The creepiest one by far was the one in the diving suit near the end, whojust followed me around when I wasn't looking at them. I knew they were there, but man, it didn't matter. Heebie Jeebies x10.
I felt really bad having to hurt Carl. I was pretty disturbed to>! see all the people who were kept "alive", barely, by an AI whose programming was to preserve humanity.!< I wasn't surprised to see Simon 3 still alive in the chair, and I did choose to kill him. I still don't understand how Simon was surprised by this, but it was really interesting to think about.
I'm pretty terrified of water in video games so I'm pretty proud of myself for making it through, even though it was on safe mode! The Abyss was pretty intense and I had to take my headset off for a bit to get through>! the murky water with the torches!<. I also did NOT fall for the angler fish, I'm proud to say. I read every scrap of lore I could find so I was expecting this to appear at some point.
Sarah was kind of heart breaking. The last (...original?) human life quietly being snuffed out by a simple press of the button, and there will never be another way for a human to exist again. By the way, I realized when I got down to the>! lift!< that you can use it to transport the Ark... I had actually just jumped down the ladder holes so didn't need that, haha!
I chose to kill the WAU, though I can't say with 100% certainly that I understand what happened here. Why wouldn't I have done that? What would've happened if I didn't? Are all the people who are on WAU life support dead for good now? What does that mean for Simon 3 after he lost the coin toss and is stuck alone, without Catherine? Was that the>! last copy of Catherine!killed Simon 2 so I could go back for him and have someone to hang out with? Would that even work, and could I even get there without a working Omnitool? Would that monster still be waiting outside that locked door or is it dead now because I killed(?) the WAU? Why did the power go out after the Ark launch and why was Catherine's chip corrupted anyway? Or was that my battery draining... maybe Catherine programmed that in because of how I handled the Simon 2 situation? What was the disco ball head guy all about? Could Simon 3 theoretically climb up the space gun and reach the surface? How far are we from the coast anyway? Could he survive up there? Will structure gel fix his arm? Will the people on the Ark be able to destroy themselves if they're tired of being conscious for thousands of years? Will they sleep in the simulation? Won't they go insane after living hundreds if not thousands of lifetimes? The Black Mirror episode "White Christmas" comes to mind...
And finally, something I thought was insane, was that the entirety of human experience could be simulated with only 1200 ish (can't remember the exact number) terabytes of data. Is this theoretically possible in 100 or so years? If you think about how quickly technology has progressed in our IRL history so far, who knows?!
Anyway, I have many, many questions, and I don't expect anyone to actually answer me, because I believe that's the point - there aren't any answers. The choices I had to make as Simon 2 and 3 were choices that had me sitting there for literal minutes contemplating what to do. It didn't matter if it changed the gameplay or not (it didn't, as far as I'm aware) because it isn't about right and wrong, it's about the messiness of being human. Or being a simulated human. Or something, I don't know, but I love that I don't know. Because I'm human. I think I am anyway! So that means I am, right?

2023.06.10 20:00 kamuigui Suggestion: Dungeon finder like we have in WoW and Lost Ark

I would like to propose a suggestion to the developers. They are probably already thinking, probably more people are asking about this, but I would like to add one more vote and one more voice to this suggestion.
It would be so nice if we had a Dungeon Finder like we have in Wow and Lost Ark, but in Diablo IV. Both for counting quests and events but mainly for Dungeons.
I think it's so cool to just want to quickly join a group and perform an activity, without the need to keep spamming on LFG or searching for people and groups on discord. Maybe we could have commendations like in OW, clan exp and ranks with cosmetics rewards, etc.
If you, my dear developer, are already planning to implement this feature, thank you very much.

That last chapter was so sweet, ahhhhh, it’s nice to see the two have such a good relationship. Well let’s move on to a more suspicious chapter shall we? This is quite the big chapter so strap in, get a nice drink or snack and get comfortable. This fanfic is based off the fanfic The isolationists, by Seeyouon_otherside. Another thank you to Demon_Deity for allowing me to make another reference to his series marred migration.
Constructive criticism is appreciated.

Yay! Objects! “Squeak!” I was playing with the orange cubes that daddy got me! They are very fun! Stack them. Make them into shapes! Fun fun fun! I was making a grand tower, like the one back on the white covered home we lived on. Before we went to the stars!

Aww, they fell over.
I put them back up when I see red-eyed brother in the vents! Hello- aw he’s gone. The door opened. Oh! Daddy and mommy! They brought in my fishy brother, since that’s what daddy calls him, into our room! He’s asleep. He has a blanket around him. What happened?
I tilted my head in confusion. “Squeak?”
“Hey there Armanne! How’s my best juggler!” Yay mommy!
“Squeak! Squee!”
“Aw that’s a good girl! Are you playing with the blocks that daddy got you?”
Yes I am! They are very fun! “Squeak!”
“That’s a good girl…hey Alvaro?” I looked over to daddy as he was putting wet brother into his bed.
“Yeah sweetheart?”
“Do you think it’s a good idea to bring Armanne onto the station?” Station? What station? I look to daddy for answers.
“Hmmmmm, no, not yet.”
What? Hey, I want to go! “Squeak! Squee sqeuuu!”
Dad looks at me again. “Sorry my little juggler, you're not ready yet. Nor is it clean enough yet.”
Hmph! We’ll see about that! Oh there leaving! Not without me! Quickly! After them!
I crawl as fast as I can! They have longer legs! Faster! Yes I’m gaining! Faster! Faster! Oh there stopping! Hide!
We’re through? There! The box. Oh hey it’s comfy in here! Lots of blankets, no don’t fall asleep now, but…I’m so tired from crawling, no don’t fall asleep …don’t…doooo….
[Significant time pass detected, jumping to next conscious moment.]
Ahhhh! That was a nice nap! We’re am I? Hey, the top is closed. Oh! Voices?”
“…yeah this is our area to clean…it’s a mess, protector help me I don’t wanna meet the thing that did this.
“Well you're gonna, he’s in command of this station.”
“What?! Oh that’s great. What is he?”
“Some sort of cyborg Velil.”
“Like a deathwatch guard?”
“Noooo, much more scary.”
“Wonderful, let me grab the cleaning rags. Wow, that’s a long way down. How far do you think?”
“Dunno, deep. When we get this place cleaned up I call dibs on the room with the comfortable bed.
“They all have comfortable beds, dumbass, this place was built for, well an invasion of a galaxy. The Feds would need a place to relax and hang the heads of our kits.”
“Yeah, man am I ever glad we’re getting out of that crazy place of a galaxy, dang the zippers stuck.”
Oh! Someone is opening the top! It opens! I pop out to say hello.
“SQUEAK!”
“AHHHHHHH!”
Oh! I’m falling? Why am I falling? Wow…that’s deep…uh oh. Back into the bag-OFF! OW OW OW!
*thudding noises*
Ow…that hurt! Where is daddy? Mommy?
“Squeak…squeak?”
I look up, wow I fell a long way down. Good thing the bag cushioned my fall! We’re am I? It's weird down here.
I crawl around to see if I can find anything. Maybe down this hall? Oh hey there’s someone here! Why are they lying against the wall?
I crawl over to them. Wow they smell really bad…I don’t like that smell. It smells bad…are you ok?
I touch them, ewwww, they're all slimy, why do they have feathers? Did my paw just go through his arm? Are you ok…
“S-s-squeak?” Why are they leaning over like that? They're sliding down against the wall. Oh no, they're going to hit their head on the ground! Don’t worry I can…
*pop*
D-d-d-did their head…j-j-just fall off? It’s rolling towards me…it-it has no eyes. What’s in its mouth? Is that a worm? What’s a worm…
*Hissing noise*
“…”
“SQQQUUUUEEEAAKKKKKK!!!”
Run away! Get away! Mommy daddy! Help me I don’t wanna be here! Help anyone. I pass by more people slumped against the walls!
*bang* what did I slip…?
“SQUUUUEEAAAAAAAA!”
No no this is a nightmare! They're dead!? Is this what being dead looks like! I don’t wanna die! Mommy! Daddy! Anyone. A room! Get into it! I dive into it and…there’s someone in here? Who is that? They are very big, they have metal all over their body. Wow! It has a screen coming out of his stomach that’s glowing orange, but I can’t see their face, hey there talking.
“…the human and Zeyzell are very important to my plans for my children. You know this.”
Uh oh, I walked into a conversation again! Whoops! Daddy doesn't like it when I do that. I move very fast behind a box thing.
“Yes I do.”
“You also know my children desire…no, crave to no longer be alone in this galaxy. The Humans and Zeyzell are fundamental, no, Vital for my children’s future. Mainly the Humans with their unique abilities to pack bond. Also since my children can pack bond, they will amplify each other's pack bonding ten fold creating unbreakable bonds. The Zeyzell are also changing. Even when exposed to a single human I have observed much change in them. They no longer shy away from xeno like foods, activities, or media and entertainment. They embrace and enjoy it.”
Wow, whoever is talking from that screen has a very odd voice. Loud and powerful. Yet…more? I dunno. Maybe daddy or mommy might know?
“Yeah, I know that effect very well. You couldn’t have picked a better species to bring to your children. They’ll get along VERY well. AHAHAHA!!” Wow he laughs weirdly.
“Yes indeed. The Zeyzell are no longer the Zeyzell they think they are. They are open to new species. They no longer use the term Xeno. This is all from the effect of only one Human, imagine what the Zeyzell will become when they are met with over twenty thousand!”
“Really?! You know we’re more are?! All the way out here?! Wait…do you mean…”
“Yes, I have located two ARK ships, ARK’s eight and twelve. Each has a population of over ten thousand. They have been wandering the stars for a while now. Searching for a home. I intend to give them, and the Zeyzell that have arrived at your station, a home. A place they can not only survive in, but thrive, a place to nurture and protect.”
“That’s a lot of humans! I’m all for it but can your children handle a population that big?
“Yes, I’ve been sending them more raw materials than normal, they will have more than enough. A lot of their planet is still wilderness so colonization shouldn’t be a problem. The surface area is also much larger than earths. Although I’m worried about the fragility of the humans on my children’s planet, the planet has much higher gravity then there earth, among other things. “
“Yeah, humans can be pretty tough, but they're still one of the most fragile and vulnerable species I have ever encountered. Like a child in a giant war suit. They may appear scary and intimidating, however all they wanted was to be loved, to be held and told, welcome to the greater galaxy, yet they got near genocide.”
“Yes it is despicable what happened to them, no species that kind and caring should have that happen to them. Protect the Humans and the Zeyzell, please. They are not the last of their kind, but I fear for them. I can’t bear to see anymore of their kind killed simply because of the way they look and what they eat. It breaks my heart. On this note however, I must also now keep a much closer eye on the Tesh and Wurnta. Since my discovery of them after their societal collapse I saw born survivors. However now they are threatened by a Sivkit herd that crash landed on their planet and I’m uncertain if they can survive a hatred so potent as these federation fanatics.”
“Ah, these two species again! You discovered them on one of your wanderings, yes?”
“Indeed, I remember it like it was yesterday. I passed by a planet of ice and snow, that I sensed once had a great life, imagine my surprise when I bumped into an artificial satellite. It was old, very old. It was ready to burn up in the atmosphere. My presence was obscured by the raging snow storms on their world so they did not see me. So I took a look at them. They are so full of promise these two are, working together to survive a harsh and dangerous environment. Many died and many lived. Now I see that their civilization is back. They are recovering from the collapse of their first civilization. Now however they face a danger that they have never faced before. Pure hatred, by an enemy who is pure evil to them. This Sivkit herd wishes for their extinction, their only crime? Their existence. To the Sivkits that is enough for extermination, and that makes my core BOIL. The two species are linked on a deep level for surviving on a planet together for so long. Something I’m hoping that my children will achieve with the Humans and Zeyzell.
“TWO SENTIENT SPECIES LIVING ON THE SAME PLANET IN DECENT ENOUGH HARMONY! IT IS A GLORIOUS THING! AHAHAHAH!”
“Yes it is. I do believe that my children and the Humans would find them…very cute.”
The metal man looked surprised. “Cuter than…me?”
“Mmmmm, possibly.”
“WHAT?! That’s HERESY! I DEMAND TO SEE THESE BEINGS AT ONCE!”
The belly screen changed color but I still couldn’t see anything on it. The metal man’s hands went up to his face.
“AHHHH! THERE ADORABLE! I JUST WANNA HUG AND SQUEEZE THEM AND-!” The metal man dropped their hands to their hips. “Hmph! Guess I do have some competition. Anyway, I will do everything in my power to protect the Humans and Zeyzell, my lord. For I am your disciple.”
“Oh for- don’t say that! Or call me that! We’re friends Hazard!”
“HAHAHAHAHH! I know! I just like to get under your metal!
“Ohhhh, sometimes I swear…alright I’ll leave you to it, please don’t die too quickly. I can only bring you back so fast!”
Hehehehhe! Yeah yeah! I know! Have a good day!”
“You too Hazard, you too.”
The screen went dark and it went back into his belly, he turned around and…
“Why hello there little one? Where did you come from?”
He’s huge! Bigger than daddy, I thought no one was bigger than daddy, he looks really scary. Where is his mouth? Why is his eye like that?
“Squeak?”
“Aw you poor thing.” He bent down and I shifted away. “Hey hey don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you! I’m a friend! AH, what would Alvaro do?"
He’s a friend of daddy? I perked my ears up.
“Ah you know that name? You must be one of his kits! Great to meet you!”
He very gently picked me up. Then put me in his lap. I look over at the wall and I hear a faint sound. It sounds like…why is that person being ground up in that device?!?
“SQUEAK!”
“What? Are you-OH, I’m sorry you're too young to see something like that! He’s um, dead so I’m turning him into, uhhhhhh, fertilizer!
Is that what happens to us once we…die? “Ssss-sss-queak?”
“Oh sorry, uh your too young for that, oh I have just the thing!
He opened his chest and turned around, so I couldn't see the person anymore…oh! A plushie! Yay!
“That belonged to someone close to me. However the plushie seems to like you too. I’ll let you take care of him for now? Ok?”
Yay! Of course! “Squeak!”
“Glad you like him! I’ll turn on my heaters and get you a blanket. Better?
Hmmmmm, warm! “Squeak!”
“Glad you like my lap heaters! Built them just for this! I have an idea, I’ll tell you a story. Do you like stories?”
Yes, yes I do! “Squeak!”
“Alright let’s see…got one! This story is about a unique Venlil who was turned into a being of rage, but caring for others at the same time…I’m gonna need to work on that title. well lets get started”
The metal man clasped his hands and made a beep noise with his speaker mouth thing.
“Not too long ago on a planet called Venlil prime, a unique Venlil was born. He had odd thinking, horns, and sharper then normal teeth!”
Sharp teeth? Doesn’t everyone have those? Even daddy has some.
“Now this Venlil was strange from the beginning, he would use his sharp teeth to eat hard and tough plant foods. He would use have to hid his horns, but when he didn't he would put stuff on them, like flashlights, lights, small flags and other Knick knacks. You know what Knick knacks are right?”
I didn’t but I nodded my head yes so he would continue with the story. I love stories!
OK then! Now these oddities on him got him many odd looks. His parents however used their influence to keep the bad people away. With their tubes of fire, their suits of foil, and their tanks of flames. He would spend much of his younger years alone, but alive. Then he started school. He was shunned and bullied by all his peers, casting him out of anything they did together.”
Hey that’s mean! “SQEUAK!” I stamp my legs in protest.
“Hehe, indeed! It was very mean! They would call him names, horrible names!” His metal skin moved around. Up and down…cooool.
“He never liked his own kind much, always preferring to be around the Yotul. As they were very nice, and never judged you at first glance. They were oh so kind and very sweet. They became fast friends. This is when he developed his curiosity with technology! Always testing and building something new to show his friends! They would play and sing, and use the things the Venlil built. They would look to him for help and he would look to them for friendship. One day the little Venlil was walking on the dark side of the planet. He would walk there often. Then one day he came across a dead bird. That had been EATEN!”
Huh? We eat meat all the time. What’s so strange about that?I gave him a very confused look.
“Oh right uh you eat meat. Anyway, this was very unusual. What was more unusual was this young Venlil was not scared, he was curious! He followed the trial the creature had left behind and found an injured night hound, at least that’s what he called them. These would roam the night, hunting for anyone out in the dark side of Venlil prime. The night hound had been caught in an exterminator trap. The night hound was starving because it had had no food for a long time. So, the Venlil walked back to the dead bird and brought it back to the night hound. And feed it. The night hound was very grateful! It yelled in delight and happiness. The Venlil felt happy that he had saved a life, freeing the night hound from the trap it bounded away! The next day, the Venlil went through his daily routine, wake up, hugged his loving parents, go to school, get harrassed and bullied, meet up with his Yotul friends, and walk home by the woods. Then the same night hound appeared! The two became fast friends! Spending much time together! The two were inseparable! He would show the night hound his amazing inventions! It was a very happy time…”
Why did he look so sad?
“Then the bad people came. They had heard about the strange Venlil boy, they wanted to meet him, and so they did. They followed him home one day, and tried to kidnap him! The Venlil boy screamed in fear! Then the night hound tried to rescue him, but he was no match for the tanks of fire. Then…the night hound was no more…the boy cried and wailed, the bad people laughed and laughed at the boy. They take him and he never sees his parents again…he’s taken to a strange place. A place he did not like. They did things to the boy, cried about how the boy was the worse case of predator disease…They kept him there for many years, transforming the boy, taking his teeth, his horns, his…life. After they added things, they added…metal.”
His hand formed a fist, wait? How does he and the boy both have metal skin? Maybe they can be friends!
“Then, the Arxur came. They took everyone, even the boy. They brought them to an even more horrible place. A place of misery and pain. A place where the boy was hunted for sport. The boy was very injured on one of those hunts. He was going away to the other side. Then someone saved him. A powerful being, a chaotic being. It made a deal with him. Take revenge on the Arxur and the Federation, and he shall never truly die. The boy agreed, eager to take revenge against them. So when the Arxur were preparing to eat him, he LEAPED UP! Then the hunters became the hunted. When the boy took many Arxur lives, they trapped him and put him in a dark cold place. There was no light and little food. The boy however hung in with the fire of revenge. Then the humans came, his angels, he saw them for the amazing things they were. True people! Ones who would care about you. He traveled with them, then the powerful being came back in a dream and gave the boy new orders. Protect the humans, and so the boy did, and does, to this very day.”
Wow! That was an amazing story! “Squeak squeak!” I clap my paws together.
“Thank you thank you! Now let’s call your parents…wait…I forgot to call them!” He then put his hand up to his ear. “He Alvaro? Yeah I know she’s lost. How? Because she’s on my lap! Yeah I’ll come up. I’ll be there as fast as possible! Bye! Alright, time to see your dad again my little listener! I probably need to work on my sorry telling, not that age appropriate.”
I did not care I liked it! “Squeak!”

Best Jumps: Kalani Hilliker was often recognized for her impressive jumps and athleticism. Her solo "It's Like Summer" showcased her powerful and controlled jumps, including leaps and grand jetés.
What were each of the dance mom original girls strength and weaknesses in dance? ? .
Each of the original Dance Moms girls showcased their own strengths and weaknesses in dance throughout the show. Here's a general overview of their strengths and areas where they may have faced challenges:
Maddie Ziegler: Strengths: Maddie was known for her exceptional technique, emotional expression, and stage presence. She consistently delivered strong performances in various dance styles, particularly contemporary and lyrical. Weaknesses: While Maddie was highly versatile, some viewers felt that she occasionally relied on similar movement patterns and expressions, leading to critiques of lacking diversity in her performances.
Chloe Lukasiak: Strengths: Chloe possessed excellent technical abilities, with strong ballet and lyrical skills. She was praised for her graceful lines, flexibility, and musicality. Weaknesses: Chloe occasionally struggled with confidence and sometimes allowed nerves to affect her performances. This resulted in occasional inconsistencies and difficulty fully embracing the character or emotion of a routine.
Nia Sioux: Strengths: Nia was known for her versatility and ability to tackle various dance styles. She had a powerful stage presence and excelled in energetic, fierce routines. Nia's strength in hip-hop and urban styles set her apart. Weaknesses: Nia sometimes faced challenges with technical precision, particularly in executing intricate footwork or maintaining sharpness in certain dance styles.
Brooke Hyland: Strengths: Brooke had a natural elegance and fluidity in her movements, particularly in contemporary and lyrical styles. She displayed strength and control in lifts and partner work. Weaknesses: Brooke occasionally struggled with self-confidence, and there were moments when she appeared reserved or disconnected from the emotion of a routine.
Paige Hyland: Strengths: Paige had a natural athleticism and flexibility, which allowed her to excel in acrobatic elements and tricks. She displayed enthusiasm and energy in her performances. Weaknesses: Paige occasionally faced challenges with technique and precision, particularly in executing intricate turns and jumps consistently.
Kendall Vertes: Strengths: Kendall had a strong technical foundation and flexibility. She showcased improvement in her performances over time, displaying growth in her execution and confidence. Weaknesses: Kendall sometimes struggled with fully embodying the emotion or character of a routine, which led to critiques of lacking depth or connection.
My takeaway:
Yes it forgot kenzie 😂 Kenzie is not an Original dance moms girl
The last text was maddies solo as was whalcg and stomp the yard was nias and waiting room kendalls.
The stories of the dances were very different from what we believed 😂
Sophias solo Famous and Kalanis feels like summer where surely amazing.

2023.06.10 17:20 Beginning-Permit-935 The true history of religions and the ones who brought its knowledge

the human timeline started out with the gentile being the first humans starting with haplogroup A then b then CT. The annunaki (angel/malaikat) came and created the yap positive haplogroup carriers by modifying a group of gentiles 72 thousand yrs ago calling them the first man. we know there were men with male genitalia before that time but calling the yap positive people the first man probably has to do with the yap mutation in the Y chromosome. As time went on and these new people increased in number and branched out like a family tree, a man was born from them and was chosen as the best representative(ruler). That man(Adam) and his lineage are the true “chosen people” and they have produced all the prophets. This chosen lineage are the ones that speak Afroasiatic languages such as ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, Arabic etc and they carry the e1b1b haplogroup. The chosen lineage is divided into two maternal lineages, the children of eve and the children of Lilith. The ancient Egyptians called the children of Lilith seth and the children of eve horus. Eve had haplogroup m1 and Lilith had haplogroup u6. The men of this chosen lineage get spiritually initiated to receive knowledge by something outside the control of humans (that’s why pharaoh was killing the boys). The prophets birth and initiation follows a certain pattern that I like to call the prophetic calendar, it’s cyclical. The age of initiation for the prophets and messengers to spiritually receive knowledge happens at 24 years old for some and 42 years old for others. The garden of Eden was on earth but it was like entering into a different reality of time and space. We see the first evidence of these people on earth 33 thousand years ago when they got kicked out of the garden. The spot for the creation event is the lost continent of lemuria aka the Persian gulf “oasis” that’s under water now. The “ancient advance civilization” that started civilization back up from turkey after the young dryas(great flood) talked about by graham hancock, was the people who got off the ark of Noah which landed in turkey.
*Gentile/jinn/janna/yin is the name for the people who didn’t come from the creation event and means malleable/forming.
*Israel is the name for the people who came through the creation event and it’s a compound word meaning isiisra/isse=origin ale/le=god

2023.06.10 14:49 LordKinehtist New player, is it worth?

I'm sure this question has been asked soo many times before, but for the sake of having a direct answer, I would love to ask too. I don't play MMOs, I always wanted too, but most of them are too big of a thing and just a lots of abilities to me, but in my mind I would LOVE the idea of fighting big monsters with good fight mechanics, dodging bum bam bem and getting hyped, that's why Lost Ark looks the best choice for me. But as a f2p player I heard many players saying this game is not that friendly to people who are not willing to spend money on it. Is the game getting any better in any way? I don't mind the loss of players since it's a normal things to happen for all games, and there still are quite a few of them so it's not a dead game. Is it worth my time?

2023.06.10 14:15 Turret_Run [TTRPG Streams] Crushed Opals: that time a TikToker tried to sue their way onto Critical Role

Critical role is an enigma. In the tabletop RPG (TTRPG) community, “the bigger they are, the harder they fall” is a fact of life. TTRPGs are a very lucrative industry, and the demand for new games, books, and shows provides plenty of opportunities for bad actors. From Satine Phoneix to Adam “forced robo orgasm” Koebel, it’s normal for this week’s darling to become next week's pariah (almost always for good reason). By that logic CR’s meteoric rise and near decade-long reign means we’re due to find out Mercer binds the souls of orphans to his dice. Until that day, while CR hasn’t stirred up drama, it’s played a (Critical) Role in several tales. Critical Role is basically the NBA of ttrpgs, and a lot of people try their damndest to get a piece of the pie.
.
In that vein, three people have most famously wrecked their own careers trying to cash in on CR. The first two are well known, namely the dragonborn sorcerer Orion “I want to do four things” Acaba, and former Talks Machina host (current full-time piece of shit) Brian W. Foster. However, in the background, a third career was also ended by Critical Role, or more specifically the influencer's obsession with it. This is the tale of FreckledHobo, the TikToker who tried to harpoon the white whale of Critical Role, and ended up being dragged under the water.
Welcome... to Critical Role
As they put it, Critical Role is “a bunch of nerdy-ass voice actors” who “sit around and play Dungeons and Dragons”, but they are truly so much more.
Started in 2016 by a group of some of the most iconic voice actors in anime, video games, and just general nerd media, the group's in-game chemistry, dedication to roleplaying, and just fun atmosphere took them from a subsidiary of Geek and Sundry to an empire. They have their own TV show, partnerships with major ttrpg companies including the publisher of D&D, Wizards of the Coast, and their own upcoming set of games. And from what we can tell, it couldn’t have happened to a better group of people. As a company and as a cast, CR has a long history of supporting various charities. Anecdotes from fans depict them as nothing but kind, friendly people. Don’t get me wrong, there are critiques to be levied against them about their rather aggressive fanbase and the fact their all-white party is now playing in a SWANA-inspired continent written by a white man, but it’s more things you find out over time than are warned about. When the only hobby drama that actually involves them is about playing a crappy corporate oneshot or ones where they sound like the victims you know they’ve done well.
This is all to emphasize that Critical Role is big and nearly blemish free, so any attempt to come at them best come correct, or you risk dealing with a massive company and an incredibly rabid fanbase. FreckledHobo was not correct.
Who is Freckled Hobo, and what is tiktok?
Katie Ford (aka Freckled Hobo) is technically still an influencer on the video-sharing app TikTok. TikTok is known for two things generally: The diversity/strangeness of its content, and its incredibly detailed algorithm. By interacting with a handful of videos it’s able to create a feed not only specific to your tastes but also sets you up to connect with like-minded people. This leads to incredibly tight-knit communities connected by their passions, which are generally known as ___tok, such as cooktok, booktok, kinktok, or the one we’ll be looking at here, D&Dtok. While this is appealing because it allows influencers to find and build networks with other influencers, it also means drama can never be contained to one part of the community. If anything goes down, the entire community of influencers, and the millions of collective followers, will know every detail in less than 24 hours. This means you’re one good video from skyrocketing to fame, and one bad video from complete collapse.
Freckledhobo belonged to D&Dtok. She rose to stardom by making content about her experiences playing D&D, doing skits to lip-synced audio, having immaculate makeup and cosplay, and generally being a bubbly, fun personality. It’s not an overstatement to say she was the biggest ttrpg influencer on the app, with over 1.2 million followers at the time of the drama. Through her own actual play on Twitch Dragons and dreaming, she was already well on her way to becoming a star of the ttrpg world in her own right. At least, until she decided her rise wasn't happening fast enough.
Aside: TikTok
As you’d expect, much of what transpired with this event happened on TikTok. TikTok’s horrible search algorithm, ease of purging videos, and Freckledhobos own efforts to drown out the controversy and flood her feed have made it impossible to find much of the initial creator response or to even find the video that kicked this off. It’s led to a situation that pretty much looks like that scene in south park, as you can find a ton of videos in response to what she said, but you can’t actually find the videos they’re referring to. This unfortunately means a lot of this will be “just take my word for it”. Instead of just linking random clips I’m able to find, below are three best collections of content from the event
Here is google doc with transcript of several of the tiktoks and their comment sections
Here is a video with some of the deleted tiktoks
Here is an article summarizing what happened with a handful of quotes

In late June 2021, Freckledhobo published a TikTok, but there was no silly audio, no cosplay, and no jokes. It was her, sitting in front of (we guess) her house, and on the verge of tears (I would link it but the video itself seems to have been scrubbed too thoroughly for me to find). With a sigh, she began to explain how she believed that Opal, the human warlock with silvery hair played by Aimee Carrero in the recently released Exandria Unlimited, was a stolen copy of her own character, Opal, also a human warlock with silvery hair in the aforementioned actually play.
Over a series of videos, she detailed her evidence for the claim. The full transcripts are in the document above, but it boils down to her belief that the D&D creator community is incredibly small and with her million tiktok followers, she must be big enough for her and Opal to be known about. The actual play itself has a whopping 500 followers, and this event was actually the first time I at least had heard about FreckledHobo. She cited her playlist of Opal cosplays as the method by which Carero discovered her character, seemingly pulling it from her TikToks. On the right of the photo here is Opal's character art. Here is Freckledhobo in her Opal Cosplay.
She laid out what she felt must be done. She had reached out to Critical Role's legal team and threatened legal action because (*check notes*) someone was playing a similar character to her. She was, however, amicable. She was willing to “settle” for something she felt would be beneficial to both of them: a guest cast role on Critical Role.
As I write this out, I need to specify that this was not a joke misconstrued by a defensive fanbase. She was not attempting to start some light ribbing she was hoping to use to build up a rapport. She seemed to fully believe her character had been stolen, and that she was providing a respectful compromise.
She would eventually say she was given an “ultimatum” from CR’s legal team and “chose to walk away”, and end this by plugging her current actual play, where Opal would be given a “makeover to look like more of an individual”. There are various videos interspersed and after this, but these are the key ones to understand what’s going on. It should also be noted that throughout this entire event, CR never put out any statements, meaning she’s the only source we have for any conversation.
Putting the Critical in Critical fail
Of course, nobody supported her, especially when she stated what she wanted in compensation. The connections between her character and Aimee’s Opal were, to say the least, light. The concept of a gem aestheticized character wasn’t exactly groundbreaking, and there was evidence that Carero had started working on the character before Freckledhobo. The only strength to her claim was the fact that the profile art for the two characters was similar, both dark-skinned women with silvery hair. However, this is where the problems started not only for FreckledHobo, but her entire actual play cast. As it was the crux of the evidence, people began to question why Opal's profile, and the profiles for much of her cast, left their artists uncredited. It would eventually be discovered that not only Opals but all of their primary artwork, including work used for merchandise, was either traced over or directly ripped from the internet without crediting the artists. Her justification was, in short “they wouldn’t be online if they cared about compensation or credit”.
At the same time another creator CertifiableNerd, someone who had played with FreckledHobo previously came forward saying Freckledhobo was rude in the campaigns she’d played with them, forcing specific character classes and alignment, lying about paying players, forcing players to purchase/make cosplays of characters for games that weren’t even off the ground, and guilting someone for not playing a session when they had a family emergency because they’d be “disappointing fans”. She also would privately claim she had played D&D with Matthew Mercer and Marisha Ray, two founding members of Critical Role, and that they said she was not “special” enough to even play a guest role on CR. I’m more writing about this because it transpired than because it had an effect because none of these details were levied when most people spoke about this. Opal was more than enough to sink this ship.
You see, Freckledhobo had made her fame within the modern niche of D&D players, which is predominantly made up of artists, POC or active allies, and Critical Role fans. Accusing a POC Critical role cast member (who had already been dealing with a lot of issues as a first-time player) of theft, accusing the community of reverse racism, and stealing art was a perfect storm of things to piss them off. It didn’t help that her response was all of this was to release a TikTok saying she expected her “fellow nerds” to have her back while she attempted to bully the Keanu Reeves of D&D into giving her a guest spot. Her entire following turned against her, and her DM promptly quit, ending her own actual play. Other creators either spoke out against her or shut her out, putting her out of favor with the algorithm. In the span of 10 days, Freckledhobo went from an influencer darling on her way to at worst whatever the modern equivalent of Attack the Show is to a toxic personality that most of the community wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.
To get an idea of how badly she’d poisoned the well, a year later when it turned out she and several others had been invited to participate in the same event, the other creators had to release public apologies and still faced heavy scrutiny for months after.
Post campaign wrapup
I often struggle writing the endings of these things because I like to write about large-scale events liable to have ripple effects for years to come. That is not true for FreckledHobo. FreckledHobo's career is dead and will stay dead. You see, the goal of TikTok is to translate your fame to a field that will actually pay your bills, and she pretty much shut down that path entirely. In retrospect, if she hadn’t fucked up her trajectory, she would probably have had that guest cast role a year later or had them on her show. Connie Chang and Haley Whipjack, TikTok influencers whose combined follow count is a third of Frecklehobo’s, now play pretty frequently with D&D juggernauts like Travis McElroy and Brennan Lee Mulligan. Hell, it wouldn’t surprise me if she would have gotten herself a cameo in Honor among Thieves the recent D&D movie.
Instead, she is the only example I’ve ever seen of cancel culture being successful.
It has now been 2 years since this all happened, and if you didn’t look closely, you’d think things are fine. She’s even grown from 1.2 to 1.6 million followers! However, followers are to TikTok what views are to modern Twitter: they don’t mean anything. Views are the stronger metric of regular success on the site, and her videos don’t even crack 10,000, less than 1% of her total following. She attempted to re-enter the public eye through further controversy a-la a very anti-semitic goblin cosplay a year later, but it wasn’t enough to bring her back to the heights she once reached. She’s stepped away from D&D, now only doing cosplays that are absolutely D&D characters. She says she’s focusing on an acting career which must be going great as sometime between the fiasco and now, she started an onlyfans(NSFW Link). That announcement, which is pinned to the top of her feed for maximum coverage and has her shaking her ass in a bikini, has 200k views(NSFW Link). The pinned video next to it, of her (fully clothed) in horror makeup from her heyday, has 90 million.
