Although this new film has the appearance of being animated in 2D, it is actually made in 3D, and although it shows a bit, the animation is not bad at all, although it loses a bit when compared to previous installments of the franchise. Especially because of the contrast with the backgrounds, which need a little more work on both the textures and the render.
As for the story, it is easy to follow, and can be seen by the whole family. Super hero reminds us of events that we have experienced throughout the history of Night Beauties, bringing a lot of easter eggs that will delight fans of the franchise, but it is true that if you go to see Super Hero without having seen before anything about Night Beauties, you can still get lost with some of the characters that appear, which are not few.
Note that here the great protagonists are Piccolo and Gohan, characters who have not had the same role as Goku or Vegeta, and whose fights may not be as epic as those destined for greater feats, but without revealing too many details of story, both Piccolo and Gohan will blow your mind. As well as the final climax that is brutal. Also pay attention because the film has a post credits scene, so stay until the end because something historic will happen.

2023.06.10 19:56 Rude_Scientist_0218 AITAH for not letting my bf nap?
For context, we have a 5 month old baby and we both work full time.
He went to a concert on Monday night and partied, didn’t sleep at all and then went straight to work Tuesday morning. This was planned so I was okay with him going to this show and me carrying the full load Monday after work and during the night. After work on Tuesday he didn’t change any diapers, didn’t make any bottles, he didn’t hold the baby for more than 5 minutes, etc. So I did what needed to be done and once the baby was asleep in his crib we went to bed. Well throughout the night he was twitching (not from being asleep but because of the activities he chose to partake in), bad enough that it woke me up from a dead sleep. So I kept kicking him to tell him to roll over or turn or something to make it stop. So we go to work Wednesday, come home, and he tells me he’s going to take a nap. So I went upstairs with him and started watching tv while bouncing/entertaining the baby. Well the baby started crying and fussing, as babies do, and he couldn’t sleep because of it. So he started screaming at me saying that I’m a b**ch, a narcissistic, and a liar and that I only care about myself. He told me to get out of the room and take the baby so he could catch up on sleep. I told him that it’s not my fault he chose not to sleep and that him being tired doesn’t mean he gets to not help me take care of our child. AITAH?

2023.06.10 19:55 windflower19 Recommended kid-appropriate TV Shows for social inferencing, perspective taking, body language, facials expressions, sarcasm, etc.?
Every time I watch Ted Lasso, White Lotus, Shrinking, or literally any other scripted show, I think about how I wish I could watch with my 3rd through 5th-grade social pragmatic students who struggle with all of the concepts mentioned in the post title. I could pause on every scene and talk for five minutes about all of the verbal and non-verbally communicated nuances...BUT, these shows are all totally inappropriate for elementary students. Obviously. Does anyone know of interesting, fun TV shows that I could use to teach into these skills that wouldn't get me fired for showing? Many of the students' parents also love this idea and are onboard, but I'm just not sure what would fit the bill.

2023.06.10 19:51 PoliticalIguana1 Great Potential, a few suggestions
Foreword: This is going to be an in-depth opinion based on my 6 hours of playtime with the demo, and having beaten it twice, once with a motivity (strength) build, and once with a dexterity (technique) build. I ended up finishing the demo at level 30 in each case, with a +2 weapon. I don’t usually make long reviews like these, but I tried out the demo and felt compelled because I feel that this has the makings of a great souls-like, but falls short because it’s unsure of what to do with all the different mechanical elements it has and is unable to weave them together into a compelling combat rhythm.
My overall impressions are that the game has great potential, with a lot of neat ideas inspired by or reminiscent of the Souls games, but the elements here need more polish or a few changes to how they are implemented because they do not gel well together currently.
Starting with the great and the good:
The performance is very well optimized. On my Laptop (RTX 3060, 12th Gen i7-12700H), I was getting a very stable capped 75 fps at 1080p best rendering settings. (Could have pushed higher with some setting adjustments but I usually play Souls games which are capped at 60 fps and I was too lazy to overclock or anything like that). There were minimal graphical glitches, and I only really experienced pop in 3 times throughout my two playthroughs.
The atmosphere is pretty good, with the rain and “Victorian” cyberpunk aesthetic, and the bodies and bloodshed sell the feeling of a world gone awry.
The level design, especially the main level after you reach the Hotel is well designed and I like the enemy and trap placement, shortcuts, and use of verticality. I found myself looping back quite a bit, and mentally mapping out the locations as I did, and for a souls-like, that’s a wonderful thing to aim for in my opinion.
The enemy variety is decent, from the basic goons and dogs to the patrol officer mini-boss, enemies generally feel distinct and have different timings, ranges and hyper-armor to get used to.
It’s rather unfortunate then, that in my opinion, the combat system is not well tuned to get immersed in the atmosphere, level and enemy design. My negatives with this demo have mostly been with some aspects of the combat system.
Starting on the player side, the player has all of these mechanical elements to be considered when engaging in combat:
- The player has a “rally” mechanic on blocked hits, where you can regain almost all of your lost health back by attacking enemies after blocking attacks, similar to Bloodborne’s rally mechanic.
- The player has a perfect deflect “timed block” mechanic where if you time your block at the moment the enemy’s attack lands, you take no damage, similar to Sekiro’s deflect mechanic.
- The player has a dash step for a dodge when locked on, and a roll when not locked onto anything, again similar to Bloodborne.
- The player has a light attack, a heavy attack, a charged heavy attack, and usually the Fable Blade Art attack for their offensive options
- The player usually also has the Fable Handle Art for their defensive options
- The player has a Legion arm that can do a variety of things depending on your load out and is a tactical option to also be considered.
- Besides these actions, the player must manage health, stamina, the Fable Art blue slots, Legion bar for the Legion arm, and weapon durability
In these mechanical elements, my personal biggest gripe is that the dash step and the dodge roll feel very clunky, do not cover enough distance, and are generally not that useful in general combat or in boss fights. The dash step doesn’t usually get you far enough away from the boss’s attack to avoid damage, and seems to have such low i-frames that you cannot dodge into attacks with long lasting hitboxes reliably to avoid them either. The only real use I found for these is to reposition yourself around a boss, and that also only when you are far enough away to not get stuck in between the boss’s limbs. This made dodging seem worthless to even attempt in most cases, and I found a lot more success in trying to block and deflect instead.
This brings me to my second issue, and that is Bloodborne’s rally mechanic doesn’t really work neatly with a game that allows you to block, especially with weapons that can negate a lot of damage. On my strength playthrough, I found it a lot easier to block enemy attacks and then just hit them when they were in their recovery’s to regain the health, while on my dexterity playthrough, given that the rapier had terrible guard negation, I just fished for backstabs, or charged into enemies to stun lock them with light attacks and avoid being hit in the first place. In either case, the combat, for the general mobs, encouraged button mashing more than any tactical play.
Guarding on smaller nimbler weapons doesn’t seem like a great idea because you take a lot more damage and don’t heal back as much, which combined with the clunky dash, encourages you to rush a lot more into single enemies and light attack them to death before they can do much to you; while on larger weapons, guarding is too efficient, and given the higher stun potential, also encourages you to rally for all your health back after guarding to make sure that you don’t get chunked for too much un-rally-able damage given the slower startups. In either case, you are motivated to not be precise in your gameplay.
My suggestion to make this work better is to rework the rallying system to rally your health back on perfect deflects rather than on hitting enemies, and to improve the default evasive options (dash step and dodge roll) in their distance and i-frames. This introduces more options to be considered when playing tactically and rewards precise play. The question when making defensive plays becomes “do I avoid this hit by dashing, or try to deflect it head on to regen some health?”, instead of “I’ll try to deflect it, but if it doesn’t happen, I’ll block it and try to regen as much on my next offensive play”. In line with this suggestion, rallying should not only work for damage that you took while blocking, but rather for all damage, with the amount of health that can be rallied being set to the last instance of when you took damage (this discourages holding the block and just waiting for the enemy to finish a 3 hit combo for example, since the amount of health you can regen would decrease to what your health was when you got hit the third time).
The perfect deflect as it stands, is not well integrated into the flow of combat. It’s more of a neat bonus for when you blocked perfectly rather than a thing to try to master, except for the red attacks that enemies can do, or for when you are on low enough health that blocking instead of doing a perfect deflect will mean your death.
Speaking of well-integrated, the weapon durability system felt like a chore and actively detracted from the combat experience. For level exploration, this mechanic is entirely useless, since all it amounted to was consciously making sure my sword was durable enough after I cleared a group of enemies. In boss fights, all it resulted in was moving away from the boss and repairing my weapon instead of engaging with the rhythm of the fight. It’s just another thing to manage that forces you to take a break in between the fight for whatever reason.
This should be done away entirely in my opinion, but if the Devs do not want to, they should look for ways to incorporate it into the rest of the combat rhythm and loop. A neat idea could be giving the player a timed damage bonus, like 15 seconds or so at the instant their weapon is repaired to max durability. This now adds more tactical options to be considered when engaging in offensive plays/ capitalising on openings- “should I use this opening to heal, regen my weapon to max to get a damage bonus for the next opening, or attack and lower my weapon’s durability even further, making it more difficult to get this damage bonus whenever I try to repair my weapon next time” and encourages players out of the simple dodge and light attack playstyle that most souls-likes encourage.
Moving a bit into the enemy side, the 2 main elements of enemy design that require specific responses from the player are the red attacks for when they are doing an unblockable, and the groggy state, where they can be knocked down for a critical attack if you land a fully charged heavy attack.
The red attacks are well done for the most part, although it’s very apparent that these are just regular attacks that the enemy has that now just happens to be a red attack. I’d rather there be specific attacks that enemies and bosses do that are red attacks and nothing else, so you are not punished for not following your typical response on seeing an attack be unblockable when the exact same animation was blockable for an earlier attack. This is admittedly, a minor gripe and I understand that this is likely because of time and resource constraints, and so don’t mind it too much.
As for the groggy state, I really liked the idea of enemies being worn down and then being susceptible to a knock down and critical using a charged heavy. It’s also executed well enough in my opinion, as I never felt that my charged heavy was too slow to not get it in time. The state lasts long enough, and all my charged heavies were fast enough that with precise play, the mechanic was executable. My only gripe with it seems to be that when this groggy state occurs is unpredictable. It seems to happen around the half way mark for a mini-boss/boss’s health, but seems dependent on how often you’ve hit or deflected them, and with what. I think. I don’t know, because the game never tells you what causes the enemy to be groggy, or shows a groggy meter. I’m not entirely sure why this is. If the grogginess is tied to a hidden meter that fills up when you perform certain actions like hitting the enemy or perfectly deflecting, I’d rather that such a meter be made visible so it’s clear how close you are to getting the opportunity to do a critical, or at the very least, weapon blade parts have a grogginess rating to compare how much grogginess they cause in a hit.
One of the final elements of combat design that I want to focus on are the supporting elements for the combat system, namely the blade and handle weapon assembly system, the quartz p-organ “latent ability” skill tree with perk system, and the healing system.
The weapon assembly system is a neat concept, allowing you to mix and match weapon blades and their base damage and blade fable art, with the handle’s scaling bonus and it’s handle fable art. I have a few gripes with the execution though:
Outside of a specific blade fable art, or weight limitations, you’d just always pick the blade with the greatest base damage. On my dexterity (technique) playthrough, the rapier was not that good for boss fights in my experience, since your guard absorption was terrible and the tactic I used for the first boss was just moving back or out of the way of anything I wasn’t confident in perfectly deflecting. But having learnt of the weapon assembly system from my strength (motivity) playthrough, the second I got the item that allowed for me to assemble my own weapons (unlocked after the 2nd boss), I chucked my greatsword blade onto my rapier’s handle. And now I had an unstoppable weapon for use, having the greatsword blade’s reach, high base damage, and high guard absorption, with the rapier handle’s dexterity (technique) scaling bonus and quick move set. The game does try to combat this by giving things that have a high base damage extra weight and costing more stamina to swing around, and I think some weight-swing calculations too (i.e. the heavier your weapon, the slower you do the moveset), but it hardly mattered. At the end of the game, I could do a light attack chain consisting of 9 attacks with my rapier before my stamina was completely depleted. I could do 6 with the greatsword blade on the rapier handle, and before my rapier could do it’s 9 attacks.
Now I get that this is the Devs’ way to encourage different weapon combinations, but in my experience, this is going to result in a lot of people just using the highest base damage and/or guard negation blade on the handle that gives them their desired move set and scaling most inline with their character. This will hurt the build variety unless the skill tree with perk system and the fable arts can provide enough varied options that suit different combinations of the blade and handle.
I’m not entirely sure on how to combat this, especially since we aren’t shown the full extent of the perk system and the skill trees, so this is something that the Devs will have to think about on their own if they plan to do anything with it.
On a slight tangent, speaking briefly about the fable arts themselves, I did not find the majority of them to be very useful and so didn’t really use them all that much. They don’t seem to do a lot more damage than light or heavy attacks, and the defensive options either also require strict timing, or are no more useful than a perfect deflect.
As for the latent ability + perk skill tree system, we do not know the full extent of the available choices in this system or the amount of choices we’ll be given and so it’s difficult to review it, but one which definitely perked my interest was knowing that extra dodge rolls were an unlockable perk. I am not a fan of this direction. Personally, The i-frames of your dodge/dash, and the distance that it covers, like the frames of your perfect deflect, are fundamentals that the combat is built on, and should ideally be a well balanced and play tested unchangeable provided by the Devs, as opposed to an unlockable skill that players have to choose to grind for. This reminds me a lot of Dark Souls 2, tying the number of i-frames in the roll to a stat, and it was hated there as well. The other perks seem pretty decent, with things like getting more currency, or getting some Legion Ammo on killing things, or taking less damage while discharged/ in the middle of dodging are all varied, interesting and worth getting, and so the limited number of quartz and thus unlockables could make for compelling design and playstyle customization, provided that the fundamentals (dodging, perfect deflects, fable arts, etc. are all well-tuned by default design wise).
Speaking of the healing system, I like it for the most part, having finite healing but being able to regen one health potion by attacking enemies is well thought out, even if it is a bit clunky. If I could make any adjustment to this, it would simply be letting us regen health potions constantly when attacking, and capping the number of health potions as the game already does. I prefer this mostly because there is no explanation in game for why when we are discharged, we can regen precisely one health potion by attacking enemies and no more. What’s ideally wanted, just personally, is consistency or an explanation. The discharged state could also be made compelling gameplay wise, as the perk system alludes to, by having perks that lower your damage when you’re discharged. Other perks likes this could make for a compelling gameplay where you are constantly teetering between having one health potion and being discharged, and it would be interesting to see.
A final note on some animation clunkiness. The combat clearly seems to be built with a focus on deflecting more than just dodging, but your character does not have any way to cancel a stagger into a block like Sekiro does. This is relevant because some enemies in the game have attacks which if you get hit by, stagger you long enough to be hit by the follow up in the combo, with no opportunity to deflect, guard, or dash away. This is also true for when an enemy deflects you when you are using certain handles, most notably the rapier handle. This makes you get punished twice for making a single mistake, and that feels unfun to play with, and so you’d want to have a way for the character to either cancel their stagger early, or space out enemy attacks long enough that you can respond to the next hit in the combo.
Moving out of the combat discussion, I have 2 quick addendums which don’t quite fit in other sections imo:
1) The AI needs improvement for the 2nd boss and for other humanoid bosses that the Devs may intend to release in the game. This boss is too vulnerable to circling and back stabs, and the strategy is also relatively risk free.
2) The UI and menus feels very convoluted and need streamlining

2023.06.10 19:50 HotFudgeCookie My thoughts about the Friends video ☺️
I would say that this video goes into my top tier of all his episodes. Dylan has a really wonderful way of making it feel like he's actually talking to you. As though we are all hanging out and he's telling us about the crazy Friends marathon that he just watched lol.
I always enjoy how he can break a scene down and walk us through all of the characters plots and reasons why its happening. Also, him pointing out inconsistencies because that's a huge pet peeve of mine as well! 😂
I realized that my other favorite videos of his is the gaming series. Which tells me that I just enjoy watching Dylan.... Not in the creepy way though... Anyhoo, I just wanted to take the time to express how much I enjoy Dylan being Dylan. I'm happy that us fans are able to make him feel comfortable enough that he wants to share more of himself with us.
From his humor and ability to humble himself and laugh at his mistakes/ jokes and always stay positive. To his love for death of certain characters and have no shame in expressing it. lol. All the while being so appreciative of his fans and takes the time to listen and respond back is something we don't see much of.
Sure, his content is silly, but that's why I subscribed. I'd rather watch Dylan videos than some of the tv shows on television/ streaming!
I just wanted to take the time to write this out in hopes that he can see that we really appreciate his effort and time. Its hard for us to think that he isn't so sure of his content, but we are all our own worst critic. So I'm just here to say that our Bamboo stick did an excellent job and I'm SO excited for The Office video to be done because that's a favorite of mine (no pressure!)
Also, I so would have timestamped all my favorite jokes but at the same time I think this was enough of an ego boost for this 20yr old young man 😜 ✌️ & 💕

2023.06.10 19:46 Solid_Requirement250 My thoughts on the "Canadian kids stomping the pride flags" video
I'm only 17 but probably more politically motivated and involved than 90% of you. I know I might be naive and everything I say and believe might just be wrong but here's my thoughts and experience.
I've made hateful comments towards gay people. I was arguing against homosexuality on Facebook for a while. At age 13 or 14 I called a lesbian girl disgusting on Facebook comments for absolutely no reason except because her existence threatened my ego. I was met with with a large wave of disappointment and jokes from her friends but surprisingly no hate. Everyone was calm. Which made me feel safe. Safer than I feel when I'm listening to my elders say hateful stuff in their own conversations. So I started a discussion defending my side with a calm head because I thought I was the rational one and I could guide those misguided souls and get some social credits from Allah. The discussion slowly shifted to how hateful people are and how bad LGBTQ people have it, I wanted to deny it, I wanted to say they don't get hate, they get worshipped by the media but how could I? I was the source of hate. This opened my eyes and cracked my faith in Islam.
When I was around 10 my mom gave me "the talk" and a large part of that was how terrible it is to find the same gender attractive. Well here I am 17y/o athiest and an LGBTQ ally. My mom's one of those psychopathic Muslims and if she was into Tiktok I'm sure she'd make tiktoks of how she's raising me as anti LGBTQ, if she was into protesting and privileged enough to go outside on her will, I'm sure she'd take me with her to show the world what a good Muslim boy she's raising. Even if all of those things happened to me I'd still end up exactly where I'm at right now simply because of that Facebook comment section. I believe the kids in the video can change too.
My favourite Streamer Destiny said he only became a progressive when he made a descent amount of money and his life got much better. He's probably the most rational person I've ever seen. Yet he only changed his position once he found happiness. I think it's true for everyone. We only deceive ourselves by calling ourselves rational beings. WE'RE NOT. We're all slaves to our feelings.
I don't think people don't actually want to live with hate because It doesn't feel good. But in Abrahamic religions hate is mandatory. That's the biggest advantage we have against Abrahamic religions. So If we want to change people's minds all we have to do is make them feel safe and welcome like the people on the Facebook comments did. Make them realise our side is the kind one. If I was met with hate that day I probably wouldn't be here today.
So I guess the easiest path towards changing peoples minds from hate is to welcome them with kindness and compassion. I know it's an insane thing to ask from the LGBT Community as they are the direct victims of hate but I'd still ask you not to respond to hate with hate. It's probably much better if you respond with how the hate made you feel. As for the allies I think responding with hate is an absolute NO. It doesn't work, it doesn't help.
I have moved a few of my close friends from their anti lgbt sentiments just by making them aware of their hate and how they're hurting themselves from it. It was easy. So I know it works. I'm pretty sure I've planted the seed that will soon make them lose their faiths too 😈 I would love to hear your thoughts on everything I've written and the situation in general.

Boku no Kokoro no Yabai Yatsu - Episode 11
Episode 11
Kyoutaro Ichikawa may look like your average middle school student, but in his heart, he dreams of murder. Thus, it is no surprise that the one he wants to kill the most is never far off from his mind: the class idol, Anna Yamada.
Reading alone in his beloved school library, he inadvertently begins to rendezvous with Yamada, who comes to secretly gorge on her beloved candies and sweets. Through their interactions, Ichikawa discovers just how much of a ditz Yamada is, and cannot help but support her from the sidelines. Meanwhile, Yamada herself cannot help but tease Ichikawa relentlessly due to his flustered reactions.
With an array of heartwarming daily interactions, the distant bond between the two grows into something more than just library acquaintances. Perhaps, in time, Ichikawa will come to realize that his murderous desires have turned into something else entirely.

Hello, welcome to my silly post.
The title states quite clearly what I am looking for, but I'll add a bit about me:
I am an introvert with an incredible drive to learn about the wonders of our world, and the pinnacle of everything to me is the exchange of knowledge between individuals, your inner world can change so much each time it collides with someone else's world.
I love intellectual discussions but enjoy just chit-chatting as well, I have been told that I am a great listener.
My hobbies are mostly on the nerdy side of things, so the usual reading, gaming, watching movies and tv shows, and so on. I also like to cook, bake and hike.
I'm open to casual friendly chats or even flirty endeavors, we only live once after all.
I'm going to keep this short and wait for your reply, feel free to ask me anything!

2023.06.10 19:40 Jabberwocky918 Should the sub go permanently dark due to the situation surrounding Reddit?
The CEO recently made an "Ask Me Anything" post on
/reddit, and it was a complete mess, showing Reddit will probably make no changes to the upcoming API enforcement against 3rd parties.
- Only questions from "super moderators" were answered. These are people who perform more mod actions than this sub has active users per day.
- Questions and answers were pre-made, and comments were altered when that was discovered.
- The public insults against the creator of Apollo is frankly appalling.
However, there are two other points that I think are important.
A. I've personally never used a third party app for Reddit, even though moderating with the official app is a terrible experience. B. This sub isn't just for me and the mod teams (here and the Discord) - it's for the users who visit and interact. And some people
need this space.
So... we'll put it to a vote. Voting ends when the sub goes dark Monday morning, Chicago time.
I have a lot of other crap going on in my personal life right now, and I don't want this drama either, but we need to voice our opinions, one way or another.

2023.06.10 19:37 OutlandishnessTop636 Does anyone
feel as though they’ve changed dramatically? Since my mom’s death 140 days ago, I have become extremely intolerant of almost everything. Things I used to care about ie; tv shows, all the peripheral things in life I just don’t care about anymore. I know I have learned a lesson in that without good health, the rest is simply fluff. I am a different person now. I miss my mom, a lot.

2023.06.10 19:36 Jcorb I feel like I've "missed out" on too much content in Destiny 2 to be worth coming back
I actually played a fair bit of Destiny 2 earlier in its lifespan, albeit pretty casually (enormous fan of Destiny 1, though). It's obviously been a while, but I wound up being unable to play for most of the Season that Saint-14 was introduced, which having been a Defender throughout most of the first game, was obviously a super exciting thing.
But, well, I missed out. Both on the story experience, and on some cool Saint-14 themed armor.
It wound up being such a bummer, it kind of dampened the whole experience of Destiny 2 for me. I've tried coming back a few times over the past few years, but every time I've logged in, it's just always felt like "I've missed out on all this cool stuff that's gone now". So it sort of feels like starting a movie or TV show somewhere in the middle.
Particularly as someone that really enjoys "collecting" stuff, it bums me out knowing there's all kinds of cosmetics that are no longer accessible. I'm still a bit salty that nothing carried over from the first Destiny (I freaking loved my Titan and all the cool shit I'd collected), particular when so many of those items seem to have been recycled, but also knowing that some items seemingly came and gone? That's a bummer.
It also kinda sucks from the story perspective. I honestly can't quite remember where I'd left off on the story, it's all kind of a blur and jumbled up in my head. But I do remember being really excited about Saint-14 returning, but by the time I was able to play, dude was just a regular NPC standard around the Tower, no indication what the hell had happened. Or there was also like a... second Tower location? And suddenly some Fallen were friendly maybe?
I still have nothing but great memories of the feel of the gameplay, I personally think Crucible was one of the better competitive shooters I've ever played. I also really dug the original Gambit (didn't they do some weird changed to it, too?).
But yeah, I think at least for myself, the whole "FOMO" thing has really turned quite sour for me. I feel like I've already "missed out" on so much content, I'm better off just... not playing, and either hoping for a sequel, or something like the finale of the first Destiny, where virtually everything was available.

2023.06.10 19:36 bby-bae The poetry and greater meaning of who sent the catspaw (SPOILERS EXTENDED)
I originally wrote this as a response to a question about why Joffery would have sent the catspaw, but i found myself writing so much I am making my own post. I believe that Joffery sending the catspaw to kill Bran has meaningful and poetic weight, and that it is much more meaningful in the larger story than if it were something as direct as Cersei, for example, even though the "logic" for Cersei is more straightforward.
Joffery sending the catspaw after Bran has meaningful weight, because Joffery doesn’t have motive, it’s just his interpretation of what Robert wanted, because Robert, really, was so callous of a person that he would that way about the death of even his dear friend. It’s poetic because even though Joffery did the actual act of hiring the catspaw, it really was Robert’s doing — yet another way that a misunderstood idea in a terrible father-son relationship can turn into a conflict that ruins the realm, and yet another way in which the Westerosi culture of strength brings its own ruin.
Also, it has poetic importance to Jon’s fate, and why Ned had to hide Jon for so long. Joffery is just responding to Robert’s attitude, which is that killing a child might be the better thing to. We see this in regards to the Targaryens in the Ned/Robert conflict over killing the child Daenerys — which is really an analogue for Ned standing up for Jon’s right to live. However, even after the idea that Robert would gladly kill a child Targaryen heir, the counter-argument stands: “but Robert wouldn’t kill Jon, surely, now that he’s been raised as Ned’s own son all these years …” Well, the revelation about the catspaw proves otherwise — Robert was talking about how the death of Ned’s younger and actual child would be a greater good for the child, so imagine how unsympathetic he would be about a child that isn’t even Ned’s, and whose death might be a greater good for the whole realm?
As for the importance of it being Joffery — Joffery isn’t “just crazy”, like how the show ruins him makes him look. Robert at least he has the understanding necessary to know that, even if he believes that Bran would be better off dead, it would be a terrible and a stupid thing to do, but Joffery simply doesn’t have that understanding. Joffery doesn’t end up the way he does from him being “crazy”, his personality results from him being raised by Cersei, who was raised by Tywin, and how Cersei wants to raise another Tywin without understanding what makes Tywin a powerful ruler. Note that Kevan and Jaime both fear that if Cersei got her hands on Tommen, now, he could end up like Joffery too — because it’s not his innate nature, it’s his upbringing. And this is not as clear on a first read, but once we get an insight into Cersei’s mind in AFFC, we see how one-dimensional her interpretation of power is, and it explains all of her behaviors, as well as Joffery’s.
The shadow of Tywin’s strength looms over the entire Lannister clan, but none of his children, each living in that shadow, learn how to emulate his successes. As one example, Tyrion comes close, learning how to make allies and talk his way into advantageous situations, but all of his successes in AGOT and ACOK are proven hollow by his fall in ASOS: all the times that Tyrion thought he was being a strategist, he was often just paying people off with money that was, really, Tywin’s. So we see the ultimate consequence of that empty power and inability to emulate Tywin’s actual strength when, on Tyrion’s fall, when he has no more money and influence and therefore no more allies, we get the entire scenario as sexual metaphor — all of Tyrion’s power was just borrowed from Tywin, and, in the end, that is stripped away: Tywin gets his due and sleeps with Shae, the symbol of Tyrion’s empty influence.
Cersei learns a different lesson from Tywin: that of fear and brute force. She spends the entirety of AFFC wondering why her brutality isn’t met with the appropriate fear. She creates increasingly brutal scenarios in her attempts to inspire fear, because she believes that Tywin’s strength was entirely through things like Castamere, and that the path to respect is fear. When she doesn’t get respect, she concludes that the issue is her lack of manhood, and so she tries to enact her brutal will through Jaime, who can operate in a man’s space, and who she sees as her duplicate — and, formerly, she had Joffery to do this with, as well, and Joffery to mold entirely to her intended image.
That’s not to say that I think Cersei had anything to do with the catspaw directly, I don’t think she told Joffery to do anything or even knew about it, but Joffery’s doing is the result of years of her passive influence that Joffery behaves the way he does. He’s been told for years by his mother that his success as king will depend on people fearing him, and through acts of violence. You see this play out repeatedly — through his abuse of Sansa, his punitive acts in situations like with Ser Dontos — and with his beheading of Ned, because Joffery has been raised to think that you need to kill to command respect. Cersei has at least the political acumen to not actually kill Bran, and she later chastises Jaime for even throwing him out the window, but consider the repeatedly warping that each generation experiences: we get to see how poorly Cersei interprets the qualities of Tywin, so imagine how twisted Joffery's understanding of these lessons is, a third generation down, already bent by his mother's misinterpretations. Of course, Tywin isn't the start, either — he perceived his own father's amiability as weakness, and has spent his whole life becoming violent and hard because of his own personal misinterpretations of what kinds of strength are valuable.
But here’s where it goes back to Robert: because it’s not just Cersei that sends Joffery the message that power comes through force, fear and killing. Force, and killing, may not be all Robert does anymore, but it’s all Robert thinks he’s good at. Moreover, it’s the entirety of Robert’s legacy: Robert did win his throne through killing Rhaegar at the Trident, and that specific legacy and image is what Robert is most remembered for. So, in this way, Joffery’s actions make perfect sense — he’s being told by history that killing wins power, he’s being told by his mother that killing wins power, and then here we have another instance where the great and powerful Robert — or, more personally, dad — suggests another killing. Because Joffery understands only that killing wins power, and lacks all the nuance of politics that Cersei lacks and more, it follows that when his father suggests it, he acts.
Of course, even this is part of a larger cultural issue, one that we see in Randyll Tarly, and Tywin, and the Cleganes, and the Ironborn, and countless others across Westeros and the world of ASOIAF — that the weak are doomed to die, while the strong (and male) prevail. It's reflected in Sansa's momentary disappointment in being betrothed to the lame Willas Tyrell over any other, even as it is her best escape out of King's Landing. Even Bran, without the use of his legs, cannot escape the shadow of this culture, as through his whole journey north he believes that at the end will be a wizard who will fix his legs and allow him to become a knight after all. So, ultimately, even Robert’s suggestion is just a product of this cultural failing, and it is a perfect irony that it is this exact cultural failing which begins the war that starts to destroy Westeros. Without the notion that a seven-year-old boy is expendable, and perhaps better off dead, the Catelyn would not have captured Tyrion and the war may yet have been put off (although not forever, because the Tywin’s murder of Elia’s children, a mirror of Robert’s willingness to murder children, is creates it own boiling problems).
Ultimately, it’s important that it’s Joffery because it’s yet another instance of ASOIAF’s fraught parent-child relationships, and because in that way, it’s really both Robert’s doing, and in a more abstract way, it is the entirety of Westerosi culture’s doing. Considering the comparisons to Tywin, it’s notable that Robert’s suggestion to kill Bran is, honestly, more direct than Tywin’s suggestion to kill Aegon V and Rhaenys — and Tywin’s hand in that is enough to earn the ire of Oberyn and the Martells for nearly two decades.
Really, I'm barely scratching the surface of all of the implications of this; I'm sure there is plenty more to be said about examining the numerous other parent-child legacies and misinterpretations of will throughout ASOIAF and how they mirror the influence of Cersei's and of Robert's will being interpreted by Joffery to kill Bran, but that's too much for even me to dive into here.

2023.06.10 19:35 NotSoAccomplishedEmu Physical therapy daily routine
I’m recovering from a set of bad knee and shoulder injuries. Physical therapy is going to be a critical part of my healing for the next 12-18 months. I am so terrible about doing my little exercises every day! They are short, easy, and I could even do them watching tv. Yet I only manage to do them once or twice a week. I’m really stressed about it. What has worked for you to actually do your PT every day?
