2023.06.08 19:58 pinohhhh Linoleum is back! My take on a modern kitchen renovation.

Last May my wife and I bought an older rancher built in the early 60's. It was in desperate need of an renovation. What started as a kitchen remodel turned into a whole house gut.
I am a 4th generation cabinet maker by trade and we did just about all of the work ourselves while living in the basement. Do not recommend.
Some kitchen details:
There were still a few small details I was finishing up when I took these photos but the house was clean so these will do for now.
Also attached some before photos to show what we were working with. It's come a long way.

2023.06.08 19:54 DarkLordJurasus Doom Patrol #5- Consequences of Broadcast Television

There is nothing. No sound, no smells, no darkness. All that exists is a vast openness of white, a blinding, expansive non-existence, where all that remains is pure, unfiltered light. There is no corner of the vast openness where the light is absent, no room for darkness to hide, to escape the seemingly hungry emptiness.
Suddenly, the world glitches slightly. It is for less than a second, but a hint of gray slices through the sky, warping the world around it with the sound of static. But like everything else, the gray is devoured, blinking out of existence as white becomes the only color again.
The small glitch in the world, the spark of gray in blankness left something behind. Something reformed, floating there, alone in the emptiness. It was motionless, asleep, as still as the world around it. Then it awoke.
Memories instantly began to flood back, memories of fighting crime, of loving, of feeling loved. The figure remembered it all, including its name, Haxxalon the Star Archer.
Haxxalon opened his eyes, or at least he thinks he did, the whiteness so bright that darkness didn’t even take him while asleep. His first thought was that he must have been captured by a villain of some sort, a villain that destroyed earth, maybe destroyed the entire universe. The villain could possibly be searching for the star bow, a weapon powerful enough to fire stars into space. It wouldn’t be the first time a villain attacked him for it. Haxxalon would just need to figure out how the villain attacked earth and reverse it.
Haxxalon brought his arms up, trying to regain his sense of sight by focusing on something not white. The problem is, there is nothing. Haxxalon can feel his arms move, but he doesn’t see anything. Haxxalon screams, or at least the sound of screams comes out, as Haxxalon doesn’t feel his mouth move. A sudden feeling shivers down Haxxalon’s spine and he touches his face.
Nothing.
Haxxalon’s face is mere skin, there are no grooves, no holes: it’s all simply soft skin. Haxxalon feels his heart start to beat in his chest, the constant beat fighting against the oppressive silence of the world.
Then… something strange happens. For a split second, Haxxalon swears he sees a drop of blue for a second. A second later, he sees it again. Small sparks of blue electricity fly around and off of a circular object, an object that Haxxalon is sure is his arm. He doesn’t have electricity powers, and yet, that is certainly blue lightning.
Haxxalon barely has time to process that as between the beats of his heart, he hears something. It’s faint, and non-aggressive, conversational in tone. He can’t make out what the figures are saying, but he’s sure there is more than one. The noise is getting closer.
Haxxalon shifts his body, turning around slowly, ready to encounter whatever captured him.

Doom Patrol Presents:

Can’t Escape the Flows of Time

Created by: u/DarkLordJurasus
Produced by: u/brooky12 and u/predaplant
Ambush Bug paces back and forth across the dry grass, his strides large and fast. It has been ten minutes since the Doom Patrol passed out, and Irwin is still as unsure of what to do as he was when the team originally went unconscious.
On his pacing path, Irwin crosses over to Larry, and slightly pushes at him with his foot. Larry begins to tilt, the brown and green backside of his bandages, stained from the grass and dirt, begin to show themselves, as Irwin removes his foot. Larry’s body shifts back to his laying flat on his back.
Irwin sighs in defeat. That was his fourth time trying that, and the third person he tried it on. He’s not going to try it on Robotman, so it looks like he is out of luck.
Ambush Bug looks out at the horizon, the light blue sky, the large, everpresent sun. Retconn hasn’t arrived yet, and Irwin can’t quite tell if that is a good or bad thing. Maybe the six of them lost Retconn, or maybe the company is biding their time for a larger assault on the team.
Behind him, Irwin hears a groan. It’s deep, and yet, sounds like a voice that was autocorrected one too many times. Irwin turns around as other groans join the first, the team has woken up.
Being the first to awake, Cliff Steele, Robotman, is the first to rise from his position on the ground. Looking around, he asks, “What the everloving fuck just happened?”
Niles Caulder replies, “That’s an interesting question Cliff. To answer that though, we must make sure that we all had a similar experience.”
Rita, Elasti-Woman, responds, “I, I remembered everything. It was like a flood of memories unlocked. I still remember what was implanted, what Retconn wanted me to think my past was, but they seem more distant, but…”
Steven Dayton, Mento, continues, “It feels different, like a movie I saw just yesterday. Still burned into my mind with clarity, but not me.”
Rita nods and looks at Steven. For a moment their gazes lock, their hands slightly touching. Rita is the first to cut their gaze, and jerks her hand back. A sadness enters Steven’s eyes as he nods and looks forward.
Niles nods, “I had quite a similar experience.” Niles stills for a moment, his fingers gently stimming on the arm rests of the wheelchair. “It’s possible,” Niles slowly continues, his mind still working as the words exit his mouth, “It is possible that when our specific atoms reintegrated themself into their reality or origin, we essentially experienced a system wide reset, our minds regaining the memories that were originally wiped.”
“Uhm,” Irwin pipes up, “I’m not a scientist or anything, but from the little I understand about multiverse travel, that doesn’t make much sense.”
Niles sighs and stares down in thought. Picking his head back up, he says, “Until today, I thought of the multiverse as a purely theoretical concept, a mere thought experiment. In truth, there can be hundreds of different reasons for our memory recovery, and each one would be just as plausible as the last.”
The whole team is silent again, their thoughts on the insanity of what is happening. Between all of them is an air of uncertainty, and for some, an air of mourning, their memories telling a story that ended without them even being aware.
Larry, looking down, bitterly asks, “Where’s Arturo or Mallory when you need them.”
Silence once again overcomes the group, but only for a moment. Eyes widening, Larry doubletakes, “Did I just make a reference to Sliders? How the hell do I know what Sliders is, that wasn’t a show before Retconn appeared.”
Larry turns to look at Niles who guesses, “Maybe reality is trying to reconnect us to it through inserting popular culture and current events into our brain?”
Seeing unconvinced faces, Niles sighs, “I don’t know. Let’s just go with multiverse magic for now. That makes as much sense as anything else I’ve seen or learned in the past few days.”
For the first time since waking up, Cliff begins to speak, “Yea, real nice conversation, and maybe a different day I’d give two shits about it, but right now we are standing in the middle of nowhere, and I for one would like to get out of here.”
Upon hearing that, Niles smiles, “Now, that is one problem I do have an answer to.”
Looking out to the open expanse, Niles calls out, “Danny, old friend. This is Niles Caulder. I am in need of sanctuary.”
For a moment, nothing happens. The grassy land remains the same. Irwin and Cliff both look ready to make a comment, but stop due to Niles holding up a single finger.
Then, two large Public Access Speakers grow out of the ground, towering over the assembled team in size. From them, the song “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond is playing.
Buildings begin to rise from the dirt in front of the Doom Patrol, both small and large, these buildings grew out of nothing, seemingly not affecting the ground beneath it. At first, all are monochromatic white, but as the taller buildings begin to rise, color blossoms throughout the seemingly growing civilization.
The buildings are each unique and different, some looking more typical in design, others covered in expertly made graffiti, and some even looking like random buckets of paint were thrown haphazardly onto the walls.
Billboards are plentiful, advertising everything from makeup, to planned get togethers. One of the largest advertises a bar having a Drag event for later that week. Strangest of all was the empty billboards that seemed as plentiful, if not more so than the ones that had advertisements on them.
As the final buildings settle, people begin to rise from the ground, most of them mid-movement of conversation. It does not seem they even realize that they moved, and that is because they don’t; the action so invisible to them, that they don’t even acknowledge it.
Everyone seems happy and aware of their surroundings, although there is the occasional incident of knocking over each other due to conversation or looking at the phone. The reason for the air of happiness may be due to their clothing though. Reds and pinks make up the majority of the clothing, and even for those without, navy blue is more common than pure black, although the streets are not without darker colors entirely. A few people in the crowd look as if they shop exclusively at Hot Topic, and despite their clothing choices not meshing, many are conversing happily with someone else in brighter colors.
The last thing to appear is a sign right outside of the new residential area saying, “Welcome! You Are Accepted Here.”
Quietly, but not as quietly as he wanted, Cliff says, “What the fuck?”
Hearing Cliff, Larry quietly agrees with Cliff’s verbal thought.
Continuing to smile, Niles rolls over to the sign and says, “Danny, I must say thank you for coming in such a timely fashion. It is great seeing you again, have you expanded since the last time we met?”
The sign welcoming the team changes, the words, “Hello Niles. Where have you been? It’s been a long time.” appearing.
Niles nods, his smile becoming slightly strained, “Yes, it has been around 60 years, hasn’t it? The story is long and quite strange, but I promise I will tell it to you in its entirety. First, do you think you can get us a place to regroup?”
The words on the sign quickly change again to say, “Your house is still vacant, Niles. After all you did for me, keeping a place empty for you in case you ever returned was the least I could do.”
Niles nods. “Thank you,” he says, before gesturing for the rest of the team to follow.
The team walks through the street, no one around them giving them a second look of shock or fear. To the other people there, the Doom Patrol does not look an ounce out of place. If that’s assuring or worrying, well, Larry is not quite sure.
Finally breaking the silence of the group, Steven gasps, “A talking street is…” Steven stops himself, not wanting to call the new seemingly-sentient street he is on an it, but not knowing what else to call Danny.
Seemingly knowing why Steven stopped, Danny responds on one of the empty billboards, “You can use they/them when referring to me. I don’t necessarily mind being called other pronouns, but I’m not an it, or a thing, and I don’t feel any more masculine or feminine than I would imagine other cities or towns would feel if they were alive.”
Steven nods, but decides to address Danny directly, “You are obviously fully sentient, but does that mean you have a brain? What about other organs? How do you see?”
It takes a second longer than the last response did, Danny replies, “I am not quite sure. I see, but at the same time, I don’t see like how people have described seeing to me; it is more an echolocation than sight. I have energy impulses going throughout me at any moment, but if that is a brain, or if that is just the energy keeping me alive, I can not say. If I do have organs, they are so well hidden, that I do not even recognize them as such.”
Steven nods at the information as both Larry and Irwin open their mouths to ask a question. Cliff beats both of them to it though as he asks, “Do you have a bar?”
A white arrow appears on multiple billboards, pointing Cliff to a place called Danny’s Bar. Cliff gives a stiff, curt nod and walks away from the group towards it.
Larry is quick to follow, but Niles grabs his arm, whispering to him, “Cliff needs some time alone before he will appreciate your presence.”
Larry nods and continues to walk with the group.
—-----------
Hours later, Larry walks into the bar, a fresh, clean, set of radiation-proof bandages on Larry’s body. The bar is huge, with a lot of people doing a myriad of things. Some are playing pool and billiards, others are singing karaoke, some are hanging out with friends, while others are trying to find someone to spend the night with. It didn’t take long for Larry to find Cliff though. Even in the dimmer light, Larry is able to see Cliff, the golden bronze contrasting with the rest of the bar.
Cliff is sitting at the bar, his metal face staring down at the dark wood. There is a beer in both of his hands, and a good dozen or so empty bottles scattered around him. He is silent, taking a large gulp from the beer in his right hand every ten seconds or so.
Larry walks over and gently places a hand on Cliff, unsure if Cliff will even feel the action. “It’s time to go.” Larry says.
Cliff shakes his head, “You can go, I’m staying here.”
Larry tries again, “The team needs you. We need to figure out how to- -”
Cliff slams his drinks against the table and looks up, his robotic eyes still not facing Larry, “What team? There is no fucking team. We had our lives stolen from us by a fucking TV network.”
Larry responds, “That’s why we need to stick together, we need to ensure Retconn can’t take us again.”
Taking a swig of the right beer, Cliff asks, “What if I want Retconn to capture me again?”
Larry is silent, unsure of how to respond. Cliff lets out a roboticized noise that sounds like a sigh. “I had a daughter.”
Cliff stops for a second, recollecting his thoughts. “I had a god damn daughter,” Cliff continues, “When she was born, when I saw her bright smile and innocent eyes, I swore to be a better dad than my own father. I would be in her life, make sure she knew she was loved. Then I left her.”
Larry softly tells Cliff, “It wasn’t your fault.”
Cliff lets out a roboticized laugh. “But it was. I got in a crash drinking while driving, and I woke up in the show with a robot body. Sure, Retconn kidnapped me, but if it wasn’t for Retconn, I’d be dead, I still would have left her.”
Larry says, “I’m sorry.”
Cliff shakes his head, so lost in thought that he doesn’t hear Larry, “It was almost better with Retconn. Sure, I wasn’t human, but I was a hero, I was Robotman, not the deadbeat dad Cliff Steele. I failed Clara, I failed the only thing that mattered to me.”
Cliff’s left metal fist grips the bottle so hard that it smashes in his hand. “The worst part is, for the hours I’ve been in here, I don’t feel any more tipsy than when I came in. I’m still sober, my mind is still functioning, I’m still remembering. This body can’t get fucking drunk, and I hate it.”
Cliff places down his right beer, and lets out a robotic, metallic sigh. “I’m tired,” Cliff finally relents, “Maybe I can get buzzed with enough persistence, but it isn’t happening tonight. I’ll meet you back at Niles’ house, Larry.”
Cliff walks out of the bar, his stride slow and methodical. Larry sits there for a moment stunned. Larry debates buying a drink, but remembers the bandages wrapped around his skin make doing so impossible. Instead he just sits there for a moment. Larry begins to watch, the four women singing off key in the corner, the guy trying to do a cool darts trick to impress his girlfriend, two guys kissing.
Larry’s skin begins to curl as he watches the sight, his head pounding. He needs to get out of there now. It’s clumsy at best, but Larry begins making his way to the door, struggling to not focus on the memories attempting to resurface. He ends up knocking into a chair, and not even seeing who is there, mumbles out a “Sorry” as he continues to move. He needs fresh air, he craves it. Finally the doors to the bar close behind him, and Larry collapses on the front steps, memories forcing their way to the front of Larry’s mind.
—--------------------------------------
Larry stood in front of the door to his house, his body frozen solid. For a moment, he thought he couldn’t do it, he thought about running away, running away from the screaming, the crying, the cursing, and the occasional slapping. He’s endured it for over a month now, and it hasn’t lessened, he isn’t sure how much more he can endure.
He wanted to scream that it isn’t his fault, that’s it’s not his fault God made him wrong, broken. He doesn’t though. He only ever said something like that once and it led to his father punching him, not slapping him or spanking him, but straight up punching him. Since then, Larry had made sure to repeat what his parents told him. It wasn’t God that made him wrong: Satan was the one to give Larry temptation, and Larry was the one to sin by kissing that boy under the bleachers.
Larry opened the front door, cringing at the noise of rusted metal. There was no chance he could get by his mother without more screaming and crying.
But the screams never began. Instead his mom ran up to him and held Larry in her arms, tears running down her face.
Startled, but not necessarily disliking this change in behavior, Larry asked, “Mom, what happened?”
Larry’s mom responded through sobs, “I-I went to the pastor today and told him about you. Larry, he said he can help you. He told me there is a special summer camp he runs that can help fix people like you, Larry…a camp that can bring kids back to the path of God.”
—---------------------------------
Larry is broken out of memory as the door behind him swings open. A darker skin gentleman with stubble walks out holding a glass of water. The man is wearing a light pink shirt that greatly contrasts with his brown eyes and black hair. Walking down the step, the gentleman sits down next to Larry.
The two sit in silence for a minute, until the man says, “I saw you getting out of there fast. It was my chair you knocked into.”
Larry opens his mouth to respond, but the man beats him to it, “Honestly, it’s fine. Just thought you may need something to drink.”
The man holds up the glass of water, but Larry shakes his head, “I can’t really take off the bandages, but thank you anyway.”
The man gives a curious look, “Is it like plastic surgery or something?”
Larry nods, not really wanting to go into it, “Something like that.”
The two sit in silence for a moment. Letting out a sigh, Larry says, “Listen, I’m sorry, it’s just- -”
The man cuts Larry off, “Something inside messed with you. You don’t have to explain.”
Taking a sip of water, the man continues, “Danny picked all us strays up because the world doesn’t want us. Here, the past is healed and mended, for us to be what we want, and live how we want.”
Larry replies solemnly, “That sounds nice.”
The man nods, “Don’t sweat your reaction today. Healing takes time, and no one is going to fault you if you accidentally bump into a chair on the way to progress.”
Larry is silent, conflicted. On one hand, the idea of being accepted is nice, on the other, well, what if Retconn was punishment for his sin? What if his family was right, what if he doesn’t deserve to be healed?
Standing, Larry says, “Thank you- -” Larry stops, realizing he doesn’t know the man’s name.
The man rises with a smile, “My name is Morris Mingo.” Morris holds out his name for Larry to shake.
Larry shakes the man’s hand, “Larry Trainor.”
“Well Larry,” Morris says, “I hope to see you again, hopefully under better circumstances next time.”

Back at the Nile’s house, or better to say mansion, Rita and Steven are staring at two doors, each going to separate rooms.
Their hands are intertwined unconsciously, their bodies filled with uncertainty. Rita is the first to talk, “I’m sorry. I know we’ve been married for so long, but it just feels…”
Rita doesn’t finish the sentence, not wanting to make the words feel more real by their exiting of the tongue. Instead it is Steven that ends the sentence, “Like everything changed.”
Comfortable silence permeates the room as the two turn to look at each other. “I still love you.” Steven says, his voice almost a whisper.
Tears threaten Rita’s eyes as she responds, “I love you too.”
For both of them, the desire to kiss the other is strong, but both resist. “How about,” Steven suggests, “We start from square one? Build back up to what we once had, that way the new us can get to know each other.”
Rita gives a light smile, “Are you asking me on a date, Mr. Dayton?” she asks in a joking, yet sincere, tone.
“I believe I am. Ms. Farr.” Steven responds in the exact same tone.
Rita’s smile brightens, “Then, I accept.”
A joyish feeling washes over both of them as they go to sleep. They almost don’t recognize the fact that this will be the first time they are sleeping alone in over sixty years as they drift off to sleep.
—--------------
Niles is sitting in his living room parler alone with Irwin. Rita and Steven went up to rest, while Cliff and Larry still haven’t returned to the house.
The two are watching the news, as Niles scribbles on a pad of paper. Irwin asks, “What are you writing?”
Niles stops his scribbling for a moment as he responds, “I am attempting to create a timeline of current events through the news and any books Danny has in order to tell if there are any gaps in the new memories I have.”
“Already?” Irwin asks, “I would think you would be busy processing your memories, not immediately analyzing them for falsehoods. If I learned about my past, first thing I would do is try to connect with it.”
Niles waves Irwin off, “I’ve processed enough. I can’t dilly dally with reminiscing. Retconn could arrive any second, and I refuse to be caught unaware.”
Irwin thinks for a minute, before getting up. Seeing Niles look at him curiously, Irwin explains, “I’m getting a piece of paper myself. Two people trying to understand current events should hopefully make the deciphering process faster.”
Irwin walks away in order to grab paper and a pen, hoping that the help will make Niles’ stress lessen.

2023.06.08 19:33 Professional-Hall485 Need help after power query to actually merge to existing table

Hi all,
I have multiple questions but hopefully the title is appropriate as this is the main issue I'm having.
Append data into existing table
I'm working on an excel sheet that takes a weekly dump of surveys into a csv file, and I want that to read the file, do all kinds of column sorting and removal, then import that survey list into an existing table that I have.
I've gotten to the point where It accurately imports the file removes renames and relocates the appropriate columns, but now i'm stuck there. I want it to basically take the information on an existing table, and merge with that table, removing the duplicates.
To make it clear, 90% of the items on the survey will be duplicates since it will always have the "old" surveys, then it will have the new surveys we need to add to the table.
so far, i've been unsuccessful in the best process to write to that table. I can manually "close & load" then go to "queries & connections" right click and go to "load to" and have it create a new table on a new sheet, then I have to manually copy all of the information and paste/replace it to the existing table, Then since the paste is odd and only pastes text, I have to manually filter my key category and reformat to make them numbers so my conditional formatting will kick in.
Isnt there a way to make all of that automated though and have it insert just the information (after the header) into an existing table and replace the old data, or append just the new data into it?
Also, since my file name changes each time we download it, how can we run this and easily update the file we are selecting? (see below)
VBA Button with file selector for Power Query
The other issue I'm hoping you all could assist with is, I'd love to automate this into a VBA button where you click on the button, it goes to file explorer, and you select the CSV you want to import with power query, then it runs the power query automatically.
I was able to create the button, and have it select a file, but i'm not sure how I can make that a variable file path to sync with power query and execute it. Any thoughts?
The idea is i'd love to share this form with less technical people and they are able to do this just by hitting the button on the main page.

At the end of the day I can make it work as I have it, but I feel like being able to get those two items done would make a quality of life improvement enough where I could share and other properties could use it for their surveys.

Previous
Captain Vohr’Doe was waiting in the hangar as Kahv’Hosh set the shuttle down, a slew of emotions raging inside her, all vying to be the leading sentiment. Though, she - of course - would probably have to lean more towards 'gratitude’, if made to pick a single one. She was more than grateful that her crew were no longer in danger - and yes, that even included him - and that those pirates were no longer a threat to anyone else, either.
And then there was the obvious awe at the humans had weaponized gravity; she had heard the horror stories of what could happen if a gravity plate malfunctioned - she had to have electrical replace the ones in the gym just a few days ago, as Kyle had pushed them up to 15G in his training - but to actually use it as a weapon?...
And, of course, there was an overwhelming amount of anger. Well, maybe not anger, per se; but there wasn’t really a word for the feeling between extreme frustration, and anger. What kept her from completely registering it as anger was her wholehearted belief that he had good intentions for having something so destructive on board her ship. But that only just tempered the vexation she felt at him having smuggled a gravity bomb onto her ship! Not only that, but there were two crates that had been marked as ‘gravity generators’, which she had initially assumed were for his comfort, to put his room - or possibly his campsite - to a more comfortable gravity. But she could see now how very wrong she was.
As the door to the shuttle opened, she watched first Admiral Shane, then Kahv’Hosh exit the craft. Kyle exited after a delay of a few seconds, and after sweeping the hangar with his gaze, he lowered it when it met her’s, looking for all intents like her nephew when he gets caught doing something he shouldn’t, and - not for the first time - an almost motherly feeling came over her. Which wasn’t so far out of the question, seeing as - according to the data provided on them - humans were by far the shortest-lived people in Galactic Records, where the shortest-lived species after them - the rahv’oyeck - averaged around 500 years, give or take a few decades.
Not to mention the fact that - for however short a time, he was a part of her crew, and as such, she instinctively felt protective of him, the fact that - as his captain - she was responsible for him notwithstanding. Plus, he really did seem to be almost ‘childlike’ at times, with a simple - almost naive - attitude towards the goings on around him. Not that he was clueless when it came to interacting with others; as many of the crew had come to find out, apparently.
But it was his obvious contrition that tempered her attitude, so that when they had made their way over to her, it had simmered down to intense irritation. Once they were standing before her, Kyle finally looked up to meet her gaze, and she felt her heart soften further at the expression on his face; not that she would let him know that, of course.
“Would you care to explain yourself, Mr. Redding?” she asked, being sure to keep the edge to her voice; she couldn't be seen as ‘soft’.
“I didn't know that they were sending it,” he began quickly, ”I only found out about it after I got to my equipment room, the first time.”
Them,” she replied, and at his confused look, continued,
Them; plural: there were two crates listed under ‘gravity generators’, and they were both the same size. I don't believe that the other one actually contains gravity plates stacked up; not this time.”
Kyle gave a look of understanding, and she believed that he really did momentarily forget about the other one.
Right,” he said, “Two. Yeah, I didn't know they were gonna send them…”
“And afterward, it never occurred to you to tell me that you had two bombs on board that could make this entire ship - and everyone on board - become one dense atom?!” A little more edge crept into her voice than she would have liked at that moment. It was Admiral Shane, however, who answered; taking a step forward, he cleared his throat.
Captain, if I may?...” It was the respect - the deference - in his voice that gave her pause, and helped to calm her thoughts a bit. She nodded in affirmation, and he continued,
“What would happen to us - in the immediate sense - if this ship were to lose all power right now; primary, and emergency backup power?”
The question seemed so random, that her mind basically blanked out, and she found herself saying the first thing that came to her mind.
“We would all begin floating, seeing as the artificial gravity would be out, as well.”
Precisely,” he continued, “And short of directly supplying power to the artificial gravity, how could we get the plates to work?”
She began to understand his point.
“I see where this is going, Admiral, but unless I’m very much mistaken, there were no ports on that box that would accept any power crystals with the required energy to fuel that miniature black hole. Which means that it had power the whole time.”
“That's true,” he said in a mollifying tone, “But the power to the core was disconnected, and needed a code that would cause even an A.I. trouble hacking it, as it's a 300,000-page code, randomly coded in every written language known to humankind. There are even symbols in the code that don't show up on the screen, if someone were to try to hack it manually; an A.I. is needed to even crack the code within a year. And only Kay’Eighty has the codes for those two programmed into her memory.
So,” he concluded, “While I agree entirely with you that he should have let you know about them, I can give you my word - on behalf of the honor of all humans - that no amount of damage could cause an accidental activation. While I won't say that the other one is harmless, I can assure you that there is no chance of it going off by accident. However, I won’t hesitate to take it off of your ship, if you so desire.”
She took a moment to digest everything that Admiral Shane said, and eventually came to a conclusion.
No, I’ll allow him to keep it on the ship; I would say that there's likely never going to be a reason that we would need it, but I would have said the same thing this morning, and we can all see how wrong that was.”
“If you like,” Kyle offered, “We could attach it to like, a missile, or something, and Kay’Eighty could give you a data chip with the code for it.”
She thought for a few seconds, then nodded.
“That sounds acceptable; but what if we need it detached?”
“She can attach it to the outside on a molecular level with her nanobots, and detach it the same way.”
She nodded her head, and then sighed.
“Well, I won't pretend that I’m not happy about the way this all played out; still, I’m just glad their cargo holds and brigs showed no signs of life. At least we didn't send any innocents to their doom with that ploy. You could have at least told me what it was when I asked you why you needed the scan of the pirate ships in the first place.”
“Yeah,” he replied in that casual tone of voice that she would tolerate from few others, further enforcing that matronly feeling over him, “But we didn't have time for you to be pissed off at me, then… But - for the record - I am sorry for not telling you; I should have let you know a lot sooner.”
She gave him the sternest look she could muster in that moment, and replied,
“I’ll accept your apology if - and only if - you let me examine this fruit tree of yours.”
Kyle's face brightened, and a wide smile appeared as he said,
Of course; you could've come seen it any time.”
She smiled at him, and turned to leave, passing Kah’Ri, who had held back - as per her request - while she talked to Kyle about the heavy ordnance he had on her ship. She heard the impact of the two, and the sound of them kissing, that was immediately mixed with the sound of hurried footsteps as Kahv’Hosh and Admiral Shane gave the two their privacy.
The meeting with the Council went smoother than she could have expected, with them simply stating that - as a interstellar ambassador - Kyle was authorized for a higher level of weaponry utilized in his protection, and as his current ship of transport, the Golden Egg had the authorization to use such weapons, if need be. They did - however - require any and all recordings of the interaction to be sent to the Council, for analysis of their capabilities.
There was also the matter of Grol’Rosh, the suul’mahr representative who had watched the probe’s descent into the dark of the planet below. The doctors felt that it was best to keep him in a medically induced coma, as when he was conscious - and heavily restrained - he was moaning and whimpering, rambling incoherently about the ‘darkness that sees, hiding the sea of flesh’, of ‘clawed feet on chitinous arms, too-long hands reaching from fanged tentacles’; and the sound, which he mentioned as the ‘screams of the damned from so many mouths, they know all, 'THEY ARE THE HOLES LIKE EYES!!!’
She noted the looks that ranged form disquiet, to disgust, but it was between the humans that she saw a look of understanding horror pass.
“But…” Kyle began weakly, looking at Admiral Shane, “That was just a movie. Wha-…?”
“Well,” the Admiral replied in a slightly dazed voice, “I think it’s safe to say that blowing the planet up is out of the question.”
“Or what?” Kyle began in amused incredulity, “A piece of it’s gonna hit a wormhole, and go back in time to Alaska sometime before the 1980’s?” The laugh he ended this with was close to hysterical, to which the Admiral shrugged.
“At this point, I wouldn’t rule anything out. However, the more likely scenario would be that it lands on a different planet, wreaksand havoc from there. Even worse would be for it to hit a previously uncontacted, sapient species’ home world. The results of a single cell of this… thing’s biomass were to make it to a planet with living creatures on it would be beyond catastrophic. There’s no amount of destruction - short of throwing it into a star, or a black hole - that I would trust the safety of the galaxy to, when it comes to the lifeform that calls this planet its home.”
Chairwoman Hahss’Chom spoke up at this.
“While I obviously have no knowledge of this movie the two of you reference, I must say that your assessments of this seem to be at least plausible. I don’t know so much about the time travel aspect, but it would seem that this would be the best summary of the events, here. It would appear that a sapient race evolved on this planet, and that their Gift was that of assimilation. At some point, it would seem they began assimilating each other, until they reached a critical mass, and ‘they’ became ‘it’. And from Grol’Rosh’s description, it doesn’t sound as if this is a pleasant experience for whatever they… it has become. I believe that it is not only a matter of protection for the wider galaxy - universe, even - but also as an act of mercy that we should put this… thing out of its misery.” There was a general murmur of agreement around the council chambers as no one seemed to want to disagree with that sentiment.
They moved the Golden Egg to the other side of the system from the planet, keeping the sun between it and them. Upon hearing about the ‘darkness that sees’, Kyle had exclaimed that that was what had bothered him so much about the planet; the darkness was watching them. They didn’t want to find out if the life form on the planet may be able to ‘stack’ itself ‘up’, away from the planet, and reach out to the ship were they to get over the dark side, but at the same time, no one wanted to be under the gaze of such a massive predator.
They were parked in that system for almost an entire Standard week, though, it should have been longer; however, with their A.I. able to make the calculations for them, they were able to drop further into subspace, where not only do the ‘shadows’ become larger - therefore reducing the ‘space’ needed to travel - but the speed of your craft rose exponentially, so it was extremely easy to overshoot one’s target, going a ‘shorter’ distance at a greatly multiplied speed.
The moon/ship was amazing to behold. It had - originally - had an outer layer of ice, with an inner ocean, and a deeper ice layer, followed by a rocky mantle, and heavy iron core. The humans - but really, the A.I. - had mined out the iron core, and used it in building the outer shell of the craft. The water was harvested - according to their records - and support columns on the inside were used to maintain integrity of the craft. It now appeared for all intents and purposes as a giant metal moon, with engines on one end, and millions of lights that dotted its surface, obviously viewports. A close-up scan showed that it was blanketed in guns, but those were obviously only big enough to serve as defense; it was apparent that this ship wasn’t built as a gunner.
Once it had come into the system - keeping out of ‘view’ from its dark side - they enveloped the planet with the craft’s tractor beam, the space around the planet lighting up to an almost gray aura, as the beam took hold. Once they had reported a full grip of the planet, the Europa Contingency dropped back into subspace, the planet ‘disappearing’ with them, only to ‘reappear’ around an hour later, the ship’s massive engines working more efficiently in subspace to move the much larger planet. Once they reappeared, the light around the planet went out as the Europa Contingency released it from the tractor beam, dropping back into subspace for an easier retreat from the sun.
No one wanted to go to look at what was happening to the planet, which would entail either getting into its range of ‘vision’, and also the possibility of seeing whatever it was that drove the suul’mahr representative insane. Readings showed the loss of mass, as the planet was burnt up in the corona of the star, and everyone watched on as the sun continued to consume its wayward planet. With the planet also having been thrown - not simply having 'fallen' - into the sun, it wasn’t long before it had been fully encased in the cleansing fires of the star.
She was also relieved to see that the humans had appropriately somber expressions, obviously taking no joy in the destruction - the mass loss of… ‘life’ - that they were responsible for. They watched the reading coming in with the seriousness of attending a loved one’s funeral, and never spoke a word, not in praise, or even the acknowledgement of what was happening. She was glad to see that they weren’t entirely aggressive, that while they had the capacity to not only think of these types of weapons, but to also create them, that they weren’t the type of people who would use them so willingly. She could see in their faces the regret they had in destroying this planet, even as it was done to save countless others; for someone would eventually break quarantine, either to try to exploit the resources ‘available’, or to use the ‘lifeform’ on the planet for their own twisted ploys. And so this was a necessary evil; though they were empathetic enough to realize it for the evil that it was.
After they had witnessed the destruction of the planet, the Admirals insisted on escorting the Golden Egg to Captala’Ellats, the space station that was the next stop on their itinerary. Not having any reason to refuse a military escort, Captain Vohr’Doe graciously accepted, and they were soon on their way; this had certainly earned a bit of a reprieve for her crew, and she wouldn’t say no to a bit of shore leave, herself.

The time it took to travel between that system, and the station went by fairly quickly for Kyle. He’d been alone most of his life, with little to no friends, so to have a group of friends now - who actually wanted to spend time with him, who would seek him out to do so - brought him to a new high that he had never acquired in his memory. But having acquired a girlfriend - one who came from a people whose culture emphasized affection - brought him to a level of bliss that he didn’t think was possible. Kah’Ri had taken to spending her nights in his room, as the only real difference between general, and officer’s quarters was a bigger gym, that also served as a bit of a lounge for the officers.
He had - of course - applied for shore leave, and it had been immediately approved. Kah’Ri had also applied, and likewise was approved immediately; she had apparently never really gone on shore leave that much, only ever going at certain spots that were closer to any drahk’mihn colonies they happened to go near, or similar space stations. They had opted to get a hotel separate from the one that the Captain would be hiring to room the crew, as staying in the same hotel as the rest of the crew on the same space station would be little different than being on the ship. Zeck’Tish had recommended her cousin’s hotel, stating that he could use the business. Not that he was failing - Captala’Ellats was a major space station along the trading lanes - but with the divide between insectoid, and vertebrate species, he didn’t get as much business as others might. Of course the insectoid races all patronized his hotel, but with the insectoid species making up only about a third of all known species in the Federation, that wasn’t as much business as one might like.
And so he was currently on a call with Kohr’Sahr and Kahs’Hahn, having invited them to meet up a few days prior.
“... and so we’ll have to stop by the Council Headquarters to give our testimony of our time spent with you,” Kahs’Hahn was saying through Kohr’Sahr, “But we should be able to meet up tomorrow; we’ll send you a message when we arrive on-station, and we’ll go from there.”
“Sounds good,” Kyle said, just as he heard the door open; he’d given Kah’Ri the authorization to unlock his bedroom door without her security card, and she’d authorized him for her’s, in turn, “We’ll see you, then.”
We?” Kohr’Sahr asked - he had long since learned to tell the difference between their slight accents when talking.
Kyle turned to Kah’Ri, smiling as he put his arm around her waist, and she slipped her tail around his, while wrapping her arms around his shoulders. He noticed her eyes widen slightly as she saw who was on screen, and he looked in time to see Kohr’Sahr’s eyes also widen in shock. He opened his mouth slightly, and Kyle noticed the barely perceptible shake of Kah’Ri’s head. Kohr’Sahr then cleared his throat, and said,
“Well… it seems as if we made quite the impact on you, eh Kyle?” ending in an awkward chuckle.
Well,” he continued, “I don’t want to keep you from packing; Kyle, we’ll talk later. It was nice meeting you,” he added to Kah’Ri, and before either of them could reply, he cut the call short. Kah’Ri gave a soft sigh, then turned to walk to the bag she’d left on the floor by the ‘wall’ in front of the door.
“Come on,” she said, “We’ve docked with the station, and it’s time for us to go.”
Grabbing his own bag from the bed, he followed after her, locking his door behind them, and slipping his arm back around her waist.
“Did you know him?” he asked as they made their way to the elevators; she sighed lightly, but answered with a simple,
“No.”
“Well,” he pressed gently, “He seemed to know you… What are you, like, a runaway princess, or something?” While he finished with a light chuckle, Kah’Ri gave another slight sigh, and stopped walking. Kyle looked at her, feeling a growing sense of unease.
“Holy shit,” he said as she remained silent, “Are you?!”
She closed her eyes for a second, then turned to look into his eyes.
“I promise,” she said, and he was absorbed by the genuine care in her gaze, “I’ll tell you everything; but not right now. Later, when it’s just you and me, I promise I’ll tell you the truth.”
He looked into her eyes for a second, seeing the tears that wanted to come, and simply reached out, putting his hand on her cheek, and drawing her in for a kiss. As they separated, he gave her a small wink, and said,
“C’mon, let’s go see this station.” She gave him a shy smile, and they set off again.
After they’d been checked out by one of the other security chiefs, they were met by a crowd of their crew mates, all of whom were milling about outside the ship. They were soon informed why, as the Captain came up to them and informed them that the Federation Council was conducting interviews with a number of the crew, most notably those who’d had contact with Kyle; they would be conducted by the Council Representative for their people. Kyle also had an interview scheduled, though his would be with the suun’mahs Representative, in a mirror reason for the interviews of the rest of the crew: where the crew was obviously being interviewed to see how the newest species fit in from their point of view, he would be interviewed to see how other humans might react to the Federation, along with a chance to voice any grievances of his own.
Soon enough, they had all been contacted by their respective Representatives, and led off into separate rooms. Kyle was glad to see that this wasn’t an interrogation room, again, looking more like a general conference room. The suun’mahs who was to be interviewing him was male, and hadn’t seemed taken aback by the presence of Cheshire, indicating that while he may - or may not - have known about Cheshire himself, the human drive to turn predators into traveling companions was nothing new to him.
“Well, Ambassador Redding, this shouldn’t take too long; a few questions about your time in the Federation, so far, and then we can have you out of here, and enjoying your time off.”
“Thank you,” he replied, “And please, call me Kyle.”
Representative Ran’Teek smiled as he put what Kyle recognized as a holocamera on the table.
“Of course,” he stated, “You don’t mind if I record this, do you?”
“Of course not,” Kyle responded.
The questioning indeed didn’t take very long, barely even ten minutes worth of explanation, while other parts he was able to supply with a simple transfer of video data. Kay’Eighty made her appearance for that, and Representative Ran’Teek had a few questions for her, as well. Mostly about what she may need for the A.I. to be properly accommodated in the Federation, though he was obviously in untrodden ground, on that topic. Soon enough, they were done, and had exited the room.
“Well, Kyle,” Representative Ran’Teek stated as they made their way to the ‘streets’ of the station, “I guess this is where we part ways; unless you’d like for me to show you around? I still have quite a bit of time before our ship leaves, and it would be my pleasure to show you a few sights.”
Kyle checked the time on his wrist, and seeing that he also had no message from Kah’Ri telling him she was done, he could see no reason to refuse.
“Sure,” he replied, smiling, “That would be great.”

2023.06.08 18:58 imdabestmangideedeed Best way to do mass inserts with Entity Framework

I have an API in asp.net 7, with the latest Entity Framework. The api takes a record as input, and inserts it into the database as is. It is an insert into a single table. The api is called around 50-100 times a minute.
The current implementation is that it takes the objects to insert, puts them in an in-memory queue, and then a background process inserts all items into the database one by one (order doesn’t matter).
If you restart the application (when doing a new release), the queue is lost and vital information is gone.
Given the numbers mentioned above, could modern Entity Framework and Asp.Net handle just directly inserting these objects into the database and calling DBContext.SaveChangesAsync() for every object separately? I don’t want this shitty in memory queue anymore, it’s costing my client money…

2023.06.08 18:52 HandsomeTar My 4 o'clock w Paul

I knew that if I died on the treadmill at the Equinox I wouldn’t have to hear Paul’s bullshit on the team call at 4. Better yet, I wouldn’t have to echo that bullshit with my own harmonious but empty responses. I also knew that dying on the treadmill at the Equinox was a fairly reasonable and respectable way to euthanize myself. ODing on the Oxycontin I kept in the drawer of my bedside table would not be equally satisfactory. The 6X8 hole in my face caused by the 12-gauge in my father’s shop would be equally inconvenient for my parents. I’m Catholic. But if I died on the treadmill at the Equinox it would cause a scene that would not benefit me in every respect. For example - the male trainers who gawk at my freakish pace would no doubt feel vindicated by my jarring death. Each day, I’m there. Running 6 miles at a 6-minute pace. I’ve never spoken to any of them. They must talk about me. If I died on the treadmill at the Equinox I would also have the sweat from my corpse cleaned by a man who’s name I do not know, but do like. He smiles at me when he sees me. I’d also be the victim of 10-20 horribly self-indulgent Instagram posts from people I do not know well, or particularly care for. Their posts would no doubt provide them an outpouring of adulation and attention on my own account. That was unacceptable. I always associate steam rooms and saunas with Italians and Greeks. I’m neither - so to die in either seems ill-fitting. Falling in the shower wasn’t acceptable. Something a 90-year-old with Alzheimers does at 3 o’clock in the morning. I wonder if that bitch of a professor Amira Tatari knows how much of an idiot she is for giving me a D on that paper my sophomore year. My father told me to send her a tax return. It’s heartbreaking to realize that it was probably less than hers. If i jumped in front of a car on my way out of the Equinox there was no certainty of death. In the Seaport the cars weren’t going quite fast enough to deliver a lethal blow. Paralysis would be even worse than my current condition, and would limit my ability to extinguish my existence. I couldn’t be late for my 4 o’clock with Paul.

After an oily handjob, she has Jordi flip over to put his cock through the hole in the table and sucks it! 2023.06.08 18:29 SpiritedMagazine6581 Scar tissue around anus after surgery

Several years ago I had warts removal surgery and it left me with quite a scar tissue around the hole. Anus itself is intact and it's flexible but the problem is around it. The scarring acts like a thick barrier and you cannot insert anything bigger than cca 2 fingers so I am completely unable to bottom. General surgeons and proctologists do not really provide any solution nor do they care much as long as I can go to the toilet so apparently my only solution is plastic surgeon but I am being completely hopeless and not really sure what to do. It has been around 4 years since surgery and no explanation or solution was given to me. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions how to solve the scarring? I am based in Europe and I am willing to see and pay any doctor who might help me out. I am getting really desperate here. If anyone has similar experience and is willing to share I would be also greatful

2023.06.08 18:26 EllayPizza How to use a portable propane pizza oven

Many of my customers often ask me why their pizzas don't turn out as beautifully as mine, even though they're using portable propane ovens similar or identical to the ones I use for some of my catering events. However, achieving excellent results and impressing your guests is not difficult if you pay attention to some key aspects that these relatively inexpensive ovens, priced at around $500, require.
Below, I will list what you need to do to obtain a fantastic-looking pizza by following some simple rules:
• When should I turn on the oven? The oven should be turned on approximately 30 minutes before starting the baking process. During this time, it is advisable to leave the flame at the lowest setting so that the oven heats up evenly.
• What kind of peels do I need? Typically, two peels are used: a large and perforated one to insert and remove the pizza and a small and round one to turn the pizza. Beginners can use only the big one, as it is possible to turn the pizza with the large peel during cooking by taking out and rotating it with your hands and then putting the pizza inside the oven again. It will take some practice to learn how to use the small peel to turn the pizza. Note that the holes on the peel are used to remove any residue or excess flour from the pizza base. If you live in the Los Angeles area, you can contact me to arrange a private class.
• What should I check before baking pizzas? Check the temperature of the oven stone! External factors such as wind or low temperatures can prevent the oven and its stone from reaching the optimal temperature. If you don't have a laser thermometer, use the thermometer that many manufacturers often include in the oven. In the case of the Gozney Roccbox oven that I use, the thermometer is located on the left side. To ensure that the oven is at the right temperature, the needle should be positioned at least halfway or three-quarters of the way up the yellow range. If you have a laser thermometer, the temperature of the stone at the bottom of the oven should be around 750 degrees Fahrenheit or 400 Celsius.
• When should I not insert the pizza? If the oven is too hot or too cold! If the needle on your Roccbox oven is in the red zone and you insert your pizza, you will be forced to turn it after a few seconds to avoid burning it. This sudden operation performed by inexperienced hands could cause a hole in the pizza base and the leakage of the toppings, resulting in smoke and dirtying your small oven. Therefore, especially for beginners, it is recommended to avoid inserting the pizza when the oven is too hot. On the other hand, if the oven is not at the right temperature, and the needle on your Roccbox oven is in the green zone, you risk piercing the pizza as soon as you try to turn it.
• How long should I wait before turning the pizza? If you have inserted the pizza at the right oven temperature and set the flame just above the minimum, it will take about 40 seconds before turning your pizza. Pay attention to the fact that the edge of the pizza facing the flame is rising, and the edge opposite the flame is slightly drying. At that point, you can turn the pizza by 45 degrees and, when needed, repeat the operation three times, always being careful of the edge facing the flame. When the entire edge is cooked, and the underside of the pizza is slightly cooked like a leopard spot, your Neapolitan pizza will be ready to be removed and served.
• Why does the oven lose temperature? After cooking some pizzas, especially if your dough is cold, or there are adverse weather conditions, your oven will tend to lose temperature. If you continue to insert pizzas, you risk piercing them, causing the inconveniences described earlier.
• What should I do when the oven loses temperature? If you still have pizzas to cook, and the oven has lost temperature, you can turn the flame to maximum when there are no pizzas inside, bring the oven back to temperature, then lower the flame just above the minimum and resume cooking.
In conclusion, obtaining a fantastic-looking pizza with portable propane ovens is not difficult, but it requires attention to some rules. First of all, turn on the oven approximately 30 minutes before starting cooking and leave the flame at the lowest setting to allow the oven to heat up evenly. It is also essential to use the right peels, a large and perforated one for inserting and removing the pizza, and a small and round one for turning it. Additionally, it is crucial to check the temperature of the oven and the stone at the bottom before inserting the first pizza and to avoid inserting the pizza if the oven is too hot. After inserting the pizza, wait approximately 40 seconds before turning it and repeat the operation three times. Finally, if the oven loses temperature after cooking some pizzas, you can bring it back to temperature by turning the flame to maximum when there are no pizzas inside, then lower the flame just above theminimum and resume cooking. By following these simple rules, even beginners can prepare delicious and beautiful pizzas with portable propane ovens. If you need practice or further advice, you can contact an expert like me to arrange a private lesson. Ultimately, the key to achieving perfect pizzas is patience and attention to detail. Good luck and enjoy your meal!

2023.06.08 18:09 rlbyrd Am I Overreacting?

A couple of years ago, My husband and I were asked to go on vacation with my mom, stepdad, nephew, half-sister, and her significant other. My husband and I arrived at the B&B in the early evening. We were to all go to dinner and then grocery shop the following morning for food for the week. My mom and stepdad paid for the B&B so my half-sister and I were to split the groceries.
When dinner finished, I offered to pay for everyone (about a $200 bill). I still fully intended on splitting the groceries the next morning. When the next morning arrived, my half-sister's significant other decided to run to the grocery store without my knowledge, no big deal. I had mentioned earlier that I only had one request and that was to get Hazelnut coffee creamer, which I understood that no one else liked but he grabbed it for me.
My step-brother and his wife were also coming for a visit that day. We decided to play some card games. While I was outside on the picnic table playing games with my mother, half-sister, stepfather, and stepbrother my husband stayed in the house and did not join (I thought that to be weird as he loves card games). We were playing a card game that has several different rules of playing and it varies by person. I understood the rules to be one way and my mom and stepfather were taught differently. I asked how they would like to play and my mother said we could play it the way I know how so we started. My husband decided to come outside and watch. All throughout the game, my stepfather kept saying "We will play it Lisa's way" (not my real name). After I had to sit there and continue to listen to him throw those words in my face "We will play it Lisa's way", my mother finally told him he needed to back off (she had never had my back before, I was always in the wrong). The game finished and I decided not to continue and went back inside and my husband followed.
Once we had dinner, my stepbrother and his wife were headed for home. Now we are going to watch TV. We were not familiar with the TV remote or the channels. It seemed to me my stepfather was looking for a movie to watch and I wanted to make sure he was happy so my husband thought he would help by going through the channels. A few minutes later, my stepfather threw a temper tantrum and screamed "What if I wanted to watch the news" and stormed off to his bedroom. I thought to myself, all you have to do is use your words to communicate that! I work very hard and had rarely taken a vacation so I wanted to have a relaxing one so by this point I felt like I had to walk on eggshells. That evening when my husband and I were going to bed I had told him I wanted to leave the next morning because I did not want to have to tip-toe around my stepfather on my vacation and truly did not want to witness any more meltdowns. To my surprise, my stepfather had also been rude and condescending to my husband practically telling him he is a moron, which is why he remained in the house the day before when it was time to play cards.
The next morning came and I immediately went downstairs to let my mother know I was unfortunately leaving because I wanted a nice vacation and not to have to walk on eggshells around my stepfather. She surprisingly understood, at least that is what she told me at that moment.
I went upstairs to pack our clothes and my husband went downstairs to pack up the drinks that we brought with us and yes, we took the coffee creamer no one else liked. We did not use ANY of the food that was purchased by my half-sister's significant other.
I finished packing the clothes and I had this gut feeling something was going to go wrong so I stood at the top of the stairs and listened. Then it happened. I hear my stepfather start berating my husband so I ran down the stairs and said you are not being fair. He then said that my husband was an "a$$hole for making me leave when I rarely get to see my mother. I quickly said no YOU are the a$$hole and that we were leaving because of HIM. He proceeded to call us losers and pieces of Sh!!. I turned to my mother (who by now shedding "crocodile" tears) and asked her if she felt the same way after she just told me she understood. I received no response, she just covered her face. We left. After all that, I expected to receive, at the very least, a text from my mother and/or half-sister (we were close) asking if I was doing ok (I cried all week as I was so looking forward to that vacation to spend with my mom). That text or call never came. It was two weeks later and me initiating the text to my mother and half-sister to talk about what happened and I felt blindsided and abandoned.
I have not spoken to them in two years because of this as I feel they believe I am in the wrong and that my stepfather verbally attacking us was warranted. He claims I must be on "drugs" for my reaction to the way he treated us. The funny thing is that my half-sister told everyone it was because I paid for dinner the night before and told everyone we had taken the groceries with us, a complete lie and I offered to pay for the dinner, no one made me. We still have not received the apology I expected and most likely won't. I will honestly tell you, my husband and I did absolutely nothing to provoke that step-monster to attack us, my mother and half-sister both know how difficult he is and has always been all my life, especially with me, the stepchild. I am 53 years old, I believe I should have received a little bit of respect from all involved. Am I overreacting? I think not!

Help with a Working Floor Plan For First Floor Remodel 1929 Colonial
Hi All! As the title states I'm looking for some help, feedback, ideas, critiques, etc. on a floor plan I am working on for our 1929 Colonial. We moved here three years ago. We were hoping to start a Reno immediately on the kitchen but then got pregnant and that went out the window! Finally circling back to starting to think about this renovation again.
Background: I LOVE our home and the location but the first floor layout is really not functional at all for us. The home has not had many updates at all really since it was built except for the previous owners put on a 'bump out' addition that really did nothing but make the layout more awkward. See the first pic for example.
Here's what we're looking for out of our remodel:
1- Dont hate me for this - but a more open concept. When you're in the kitchen you're completely detached from the rest of the house. also can't open the DW all the way, fridge is blocking it, its impossible for 2 people to be in there and cooking at the same time. I would love it if I could be cooking dinner, and have my daughter in sight if she's playing with her toys or watching a show on the couch. (So, basically, an island in the kitchen, a family room area, and a spot for a dining table.... all in that one side of the house. then the living room would be a more formal spot OR if im being real, probably a place for toy storage and a second play spot for my daughter lol)
2- an entrance to the patio from the kitchen. I love the idea of having a dining table back there with alot of windows and then the French doors sliding out to the back porch.
3- Id like to move the existing powder room so that the center hallway is open when you first walk in - like a true "center hall colonial" and you can see through to the back of the house from the foyer.
4- Entryway / Mudroom / Powder Room / Laundry Room on that left side of the house but I just can't figure out the best use of those spaces.
I've attached two pictures - one is the current layout and the other is one I have been working on with a new layout but I am getting stuck and wanted to come here for some help and feedback.
Thank you in advance!!!

Original Layout

2023.06.08 17:51 Jeep222 Divorce

Hello everyone. I am not sure if this is going to net me any good, but I feel that I am out of options. I am going through a divorce. It's fine. We are both adults and managing it well (enough). Many tears were shed, but came to the realization that we were oil and water. 8 years.
The problems comes with the dog. I am going to be the one to relocate. The rental market is crazy right now if you do not know. I found and secured a place that will only accept pets with an Emergency Support Animal waiver signed by a Doctor. I tried my Personal Doctor and he did not feel comfortable signing off as I do not have "Mental Health" diagnosis. I also tried a work colleague who has the "credentials" to sign, but she was not willing as I was not a Client of hers. I get it, I am not mad at that as it is bending morality and ethics.
I care about this dog. She is a rescue and has taken years and years to get her to not quiver / shy away when approached. She would flinch is someone sneezed 3 tables away. She is getting comfortable. She runs like a dog in the yard and is becoming a dog again. Throwing her toys in the air, digging holes and exploring. I 100% understand / agree that here is the best place for her (Mama's house). She has a yard, a fence, Bird Suet that she sneaks etc.. I just want her for the occasional over night, or if the EX needs to be out of town for any reason (her mother has cancer). It sounds like I can not even have the dog on the property without this ESA.
I am at a loss and don't know where to turn. I tried my local subReddit community, Milwaukee, but I was banned on my primary account for unrelated reasons. When I set up a "throwaway" account, it never got traction. I freely admitted my primary account was banned and needed help. Nothing. Not even a downvote.
Does anyone have advice for me? I can pick/pack up an walk away from the woman, but not the dog. I would be devastated.

Safariland Delta 4 Helmet Good to Go?
Recently picked up a Delta 4 Safariland helmet from a surplus store. It’s their take on an ACH style helmet. Helmets really don’t show up often around me so I had to jump on it for the price, but do you guys think this is good to go? Do you think it’ll perform similaidentical to an ACH? My main concern is backface deformation, and I can’t find any videos of ballistic tests out there on the inter webs. I know they make great products, but I really haven’t heard too much on their armor. Thanks for your time!

2023.06.08 17:40 MR_GD Side hustles for young people (anywhere between 15 - 20 really)

DISCLAIMER these are just ideas that I know have worked but not tried myself properly
This post is directed at young people but are also great side hustles but take effort, so make sure to get your customer service skills up to scratch
These are just ideas for making a little bit of money for younger hustlers looking for something to get themselves a game console or even good work experience on their resumes!!!
Also will not need any vehicle or heavy equipment
1 - Yard worker:
What do you need; -hedge clippers -garden trowel -a garden waste bag -ppe (hat, gloves and sun protective clothing)
Offer to clean up people's backyards, water their plants, weed their garden beds and even trim some hedges or bushes, great but of work and can make some decent money for a low investment, also very good for continuous income and if successful a good entry into lawn mowing or landscaping!!!
2 - home car wash
What you need; -Bucket (2 is best for method I suggest) -car wash liquid -sqeegue -micro fibre window clothe -window cleaner -sponge
Door knocking and cardboard signs are your best friends, Facebook will help too if you have permission to have this all happen at your home, I recommend throwing all your stuff into your buckets and go for a wonder around your area, look for decent cars and ask if they want their cars cleaned, be straight forward and keep the price low but not too low, depending on the area it should change (in the average neighbourhood maybe $30 but in your nice neighbourhoods around $60 assuming you do a good quick job! You'll figure out the pricing when you do it for a little while)
I recommend using their water but ask first, some people assume it's okay and it might be but never let it get the best of you, fill one bucket with water and some wash liquid and the other with straight water, use the soapy water first with the sponge and the other to rinse it off, do the windows last as not to ruin that clean car effect you get from clear windows. Definitely ask if it's okay to open the doors to wipe down the inside of them for an even clearer feel, once you get the cleaning done, pack it up, put away your stuff, use the water in the bucket to get rid of any suds on their lawn/driveway and make sure the area is clear of obvious rubbish. Once you're done with all that let them know you're done and not only will they appreciate their car being done, the clean up will go a long way considering you have to do that when you leave anyway, it also promotes people wanting your service again!
3 - food vendor
What you need; -eskee -cooler -folding Table -Chair -stock (sandwiches, soft drinks, energy drinks, juices and even water) -standing umbrella -ice (consider ice packs) -cash box -price sign (menu) of some sort
This one is a weird one, I would recommend getting help from a parent or friend to get you there but if you get a little trolley of some sort it's definitely doable, the best positioning is at your local skate park or anywhere there's a sport, standers parks are also great.
Try and get permission from anyone in charge of the area as you can get in trouble in some cases so do some scout work, this one is probably the most situanal and costly one to maintain but can be a little bit of fun too, setup a little table with some drinks and foods available, places where people think of this alot are good such as bmx tracks or skate parks, every time I go to the MTB park I think of getting something to eat and drink but the only thing you don't have to go a long way for is water and when your exhausted the last thing you want to do is make a trip just to come back.
My biggest thing with this one is keep costs low as possible, buy a large pack of Pepsi Max and coke, only take half of each, depending on the size of your eskee will make all the difference, have options but not everything, ask people who you see often what they like, same for food, if people don't like ham sandwiches, think about corned meat or maybe even other stuff such as snacks like Musli bars or trail mix, buying bulk will be your main thing as to keep costs low, if a 8 pack of Pepsi is $12 in your area, that's $1.50 per can so charge $2, don't ask for $2.50 or $2.25 as keeping whole numbers is simple and effective, have change as people will appreciate that, don't keep it all in one cash box, hide it in your pockets as it's not impossible for someone to try to steal your box... LET THEM TAKE IT, keep as little in it and put away what you don't need, lose a little.. not everything!
Make sure to set up by benches if possible as people love having their breaks with seating and even shade just as much as something to eat, have a sign to show your costs and don't surprise people with what you're charging!
Thanks for reading and I hope you find something that might be of interest to you, if you have anything you want to add or try one of these out, please comment your thoughts or experiences as I love hearing people's methods, best of luck and stay safe!

2023.06.08 17:28 JessBeck96 Sickness Of The Sea: Chapter 1&2

Summary: Hiccup is trapped at the bottom of the ocean for much longer than he actually was in Dire Straits. After being saved, Hiccup suffers from an illness that might prove deadly. It's a race against the clock to get him home. Contains Hiccup!Whump

Toothless fired on the diving bell, trying to free his rider. Once he realized his firepower was not strong enough in these depths, he stopped and went to check on Hiccup. The dragon helplessly watched as what was now Hiccup's tomb rapidly filled up with ice-cold water.
Hiccup placed his hand on the Deathsong amber window as Toothless nudged it with his snout. "I know, bud." He turned to look at the water flooding in. "I wouldn't leave you either."
The young rider tilted his head up and took one last deep breath. The water rushed over his head, and he was soon fully immersed. Toothless roared in concern as Hiccup tried to give him a final smile. They both touched the amber window one last time. The Night Fury watched in despair as his human let go of that last breath. He roared in anger as his best friend lost consciousness and floated to the center of the diving bell.
Desperate, he began to fire on the bell again, unaware of the Submaripper swimming up behind him. It wasn't until the Submaripper had already grabbed the bell with his teeth, did Toothless realize what was happening. He quickly followed the Tidal Class dragon to the surface.
The Submaripper broke through the surface and dropped the diving bell onto the deck of the boat that had aided in his rescue.
"We need to get him out of there," Astrid stated, looking through the window.
"How?" Fishlegs asked as Toothless climbed back aboard. "It's dragon-proof."
"We got this!" Tuffnut exclaimed as he plunged a pole into one of the cracks. "Barf! Belch!"
The Zippleback twisted their necks together and used their teeth to clamp down on the pole, pulling it downward until the bell opened enough for someone to reach in and grab their leader.
"Now pull him out. Quickly," Fishlegs urged as Astrid picked Hiccup by the shoulders. Fishlegs quickly assisted by grabbing his legs. Together they set Hiccup down.
Astrid went to feel for a heartbeat but found none. "Oh, no," she cried. "Hiccup! Please, breathe. Please breathe!"
Toothless nudged her out of the way, sniffed his rider, and began licking him. When that did not work, he let out his loudest roar, hoping to scare his rider awake. Behind him, the other humans were starting to cry. He couldn't give up. As a last resort, he pounced with all his might onto Hiccup's chest.
After the third pounce, Hiccup's eyes shot open as he began to cough up the water that had filled his lungs. Toothless took a step back to give his human some space to breathe, crooning happily that he was alive.
Hiccup pushed himself up into a sitting position and reached out to pet Toothless. "I'm okay, bud." He coughed again, dispelling more water. "Thank you, Toothless."
Astrid knelt down by his side once more, placing a hand on his shoulder. Hiccup took hold of her hand and gave her a small smile.
In the distance, the Submaripper roared its thanks. Toothless quickly returned a roar of his own thanks.
With the help of Fishlegs and Astrid, Hiccup managed to stand. He placed one hand on his aching chest and another on Toothless. "What... happened?" he breathed.
"Viggo happened," Snotlout answered angrily.
Hiccup felt a sense of panic and adrenaline fill his weakened body "Viggo. No, no, he can't escape." He tried to climb onto Toothless, only to lose what little balance he had, falling down.
Fishlegs knelt down next to him. "It's okay, Hiccup. I got you. You need to stay here and rest."
Astrid, from on top of Stormfly. "Don't worry. He won't get far."
Without another word, she, Snotlout, and the twins flew off in the direction of Viggo's ship. Fishlegs stayed behind to help Hiccup. "Let's get you into the Captain's Quarters. There's a bed in there you can rest on."
Hiccup tried to sit up on his own once more. "No. They need my help to get Viggo. I can't let him get away."
"He won't get away," Fishlegs promised, helping him sit up. "You've just been through a rather traumatic ordeal. Your body needs time to recover."
Hiccup sat for a moment before responding. "Fine. But no carrying me. Let me keep some of my dignity."
Fishlegs obliged and helped his friend to his feet. Then, with the help of Toothless, the two helped Hiccup walk down below deck to the Captain's Quarters. The husky dragon rider helped his friend remove his wet clothes and get him into the bed. Toothless shot a small plasma blast fire into the room's hearth. After ensuring the room provided significant warmth, Fishlegs left to go get some medical supplies and herbal remedies.
Toothless stayed behind and watched as his human drifted off into a restless sleep. He sat at the foot of the bed, watching the rise and fall of Hiccup's chest.

Chapter 2:

Fishlegs reached the top deck; just the other four Riders were returning.
"Well?" Fishlegs asked.
Astrid jumped down from her Deadly Nadder, shaking her head. "He escaped. He and Ryker were in a dinghy being pulled by Seashockers."
"There's always next time," Fishlegs shrugged.
"How is he?" Astrid asked.
"He's having a hard time breathing, and his skin is warm to the touch despite being submerged in freezing cold water," Fishlegs answered. "We need to get him back to Gothi quickly. But he can't fly. I doubt he's in any condition to be in the air right now. So we'll have to sail back."
"We won't reach Berk until tomorrow morning," Astrid pointed. "Can he hold out that long?"
Fishlegs shook his head. "I don't know. But we have to try."
"What if the dragons pulled the boat?" Astrid suggested. "The boat stays in the water while the dragons fly above, pulling the ropes. We'll get there in about 3 hours."
"Like what you just saw Viggo and Ryker doing to the Seashockers?" Fishlegs pointed out.
"Kinda," Astrid sighed. "And I hate suggesting it. But Hiccup needs urgent care, and the sooner we get him back to Berk, the better off he'll be."
Fishlegs pondered for a few seconds before answering. "Okay. But only this time." The Gronkle lover then walked off to talk to the other Riders.
Astrid walked down below deck to where Hiccup was resting. When she got to where he was, she found him lying in the bed shivering, despite the multiple blanks piled on top of him. Toothless was watching his rider with concern.
Astrid went over to the bed and sat down next to Hiccup's head, brushing his wet locks out of the way. Despite shivering, his skin felt hot to the touch. He was cold and warm at the same time. She placed her hand on his chest and leaned in to listen. His heart was racing, and his breathing sounded raspy and shallow.
"Hang in there, Hiccup," Astrid whispered, taking hold of her friend's hand. "We'll get you back to Berk in no time."
Toothless let out a sorrowful croon as he gently laid his head on Hiccup's chest. The blonde worry gave him a comforting pat before getting up to leave. As she was walking out, Fishlegs came in with more blankets and a medicine bag.
"The dragons are in formation and ready to leave," Fishlegs reported as he set the blankets down on a nearby table.
"Good," Astrid said. "The sooner, the better. He has a fever and is having trouble breathing."
Fishlegs rushed over to the bed, carefully moving Toothless away from Hiccup. He quickly removed the blankets and placed his head on his friend's chest. Listening to each raspy breath Hiccup forced out. "Oh no."
"What?" Astrid asked, worry filling her voice. "What's wrong?"
"Hand me the medicine bag," Fishlegs urged. "One of his lungs has collapsed. We have to reinflate it."
Astrid handed him the bag. "How are we going to do that?"
Fishlegs rummaged through the bag. "By placing a metal tube in his chest." He pulled a small dagger, rags, a roll of bandages, and a metal rob out of the bag.
"And you just so happen to have everything you need?" Astrid pointed out.
"An Ingerman is always prepared," Fishlegs stated. "I need your help holding him down. This requires precision. It's also going to hurt."
Astrid placed one arm across Hiccup's shoulders and the other near his hips, ensuring he couldn't move. "And you know what you're doing, right?"
Fishlegs firmly gripped the dagger in his right hand. "I've watched Gothi and my mom do this quite a few times back during the raids. I've also read Gothi's notes, studying up on it. I've never done it before, though. I was hoping I'd never have to."
Toothless watched as the young humans stood over his best friend, trying to figure out what they were doing. He was sure they were helping him but couldn't figure out how. He sat himself at the foot of the bed, getting out of their way but staying nearby. He wasn't about to leave his human hatchling alone.
Fishlegs carefully used his free hand to count the ribs until he got to the fourth and fifth ones. He placed the tip of the dagger right between the two ribs. "So sorry for this Hiccup," he told his friend, who was thankfully unconscious for this procedure.
He pressed the dagger into the skin, cutting into the muscle that protected the ribcage. Blood flowed freely from the new wound. The young man dropped the dagger and grabbed two rags, placing one on each side of the cut. He then grabbed the thin metal tube and pushed it into the center of the wound. Once he was sure the rod was correctly inserted, he used one hand to apply pressure to the cut and picked up the roll of bandages with the other.
"Now for the tricky part," Fishlegs said, letting out the breath he didn't know he was holding. "Wrapping the bandages around him. We can't sit him up because it could dislodge the tube. So we'll have to lift him enough to get the roll under him. I can hold him up long enough for you to do it. But you have to do it as quickly as possible."
Astrid nodded as she took the roll from Fishlegs hand. "I will be."
Fishlegs took the pressure off the wound and placed his hands under Hiccup. "On the count of three."
Astrid placed one of the bandages near the tube and applied enough pressure to hold it in place. "Ready."
"One. Two. Three," Fishlegs counted and, with relative ease, carefully lifted their injured leader up. Astrid rolled the bandages under Hiccup and reached over to grab it once it reached the other side. She quickly repeated the process until she reached the end of the roll. She stuffed the end down the side she was, securing it.
Fishlegs laid Hiccup back down and placed one of the heavier blankets on his legs, pulling it up enough to keep him warm but not obstructing the tube. "Now we wait and hope this works."
