Jahmyr Gibbs went from living at a shelter to becoming Detroit Lions biggest swing yet

2023.06.08 16:37 PhraseDense5000 Jahmyr Gibbs went from living at a shelter to becoming Detroit Lions biggest swing yet

This is a "subscriber only" article written by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press from last month that I thought some people would be interested in.
Matt Land’s phone wouldn’t stop buzzing.
Land was the coach at Dalton High in northwest Georgia, about 20 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee, when the Catamounts lost to Justin Fields’ Harrison High team in 2017 in a nationally televised game on ESPN2.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart helicoptered in for the game to see Fields, then a Georgia recruit who went on to star at Ohio State. But after Fields broke the index finger on his throwing hand in the third quarter, a little-known running back of diminutive stature stole the show.
Jahmyr Gibbs was a 145-pound sophomore then with nary a scholarship offer to his name. He was lightning quick and quiet as crochet, and recruiters everywhere took note of his 202-yard, two-touchdown rushing day.
“The next morning by 10 o’clock I had 45 text messages and emails or phone calls, people saying, ‘Man, who is that kid? And how big is he?’” Land recalled. “I was like, ‘Ah, he’s 165 pounds.’ They’re like, ‘Really?’ ‘Yeah, yeah.’ I called my strength coach the next morning, I was like, ‘Hey, I don’t know what you’re going to do between now and this summer, but you’ve got to put 15 pounds on Jahmyr.’ I said they all think he weighs 162 pounds.”
Gibbs packed on enough weight to attract recruiting interest from across the country, and after three college seasons — two at Georgia Tech and one at Alabama — he joined fellow 2023 first-round pick Bijan Robinson as the first running backs to be drafted inside the top 20 since 2018.
The Detroit Lions took Gibbs 12th overall in the draft April 27, after trading down from No. 6, and are banking on the electric dual-threat to help diversify their backfield, beginning this fall.
Gibbs led Alabama with 926 yards rushing on 151 carries last season and had a team-high 44 receptions for 444 yards. He ran the second fastest 40-yard dash of any running back at the combine (4.36 seconds). He earned all-ACC honors at three different positions — all-purpose back, running back and return specialist — during his time at Georgia Tech.
And his modest upbringing left him with a work ethic and love for football that seem right up Lions coach Dan Campbell’s alley. “He’s humbled by small beginnings,” former Georgia Tech running backs coach Tashard Choice, now the running backs coach at Texas, said. “If you think about the character, a lot of times these football players got stories behind them. For Gibbs, him bouncing from house to house, the one thing that gave him life, that made him have a purpose was playing outside, playing football, running around. Like I got pictures of him as a little kid, like that’s what he loved to do as a little kid. He had that in him. The Lord had that in him way before.”
Gibbs has been reticent to talk publicly about his upbringing, but he was raised by his single grandmother, Angela Willis, who, according to a 2018 profile in the Dalton Daily Citizen, became his legal guardian when he was 13.
Gibbs was joined by his adoptive family, Greg and Dusty Ross and two of their children, at his introductory news conference April 28 in Allen Park. Gibbs first met the Rosses when he and Willis spent time at a local shelter, Family Promise, whose mission is to help homeless and low-income families achieve independence.
Dusty was volunteering at the shelter at the time, and Gibbs passed the days by playing with her son, John, his future teammate at Dalton and Georgia Tech. After a spell living with Dalton quarterback J.P. Tighe and his family, Gibbs moved in with the Rosses, who he calls mom and dad.
Land first learned of Gibbs when his sister-in-law, a teacher at a local elementary school, called to tell him about a sweet, shy, athletically gifted 6-year-old who was in a transient situation and in need of support.
Land gave Gibbs a scholarship to his football camp, made him a ball boy and water boy for his team, and built a bond the two still share today.
“(My sister-in-law) just said he was just a really pleasant kid but that he did have a lot of athletic ability but also that he was just really, really kind of guarded and sweet, but at the same time, just somebody that you just knew that you wanted to kind of be with and help, and was appreciative, but was very quiet,” Land said. “It was more of, instead of telling you thank you, it was more of showing you thank you. He just received that, all the things that we were trying to do. As long as there was a ball, he was connected. I think I could have walked out there with a hockey puck, he wouldn’t have cared. He just wanted to play and compete.”
Gibbs, at his introductory news conference, said he “wouldn’t change anything” about his upbringing. He said an aunt and uncle also gave him guidance early in life, the Rosses did “a great job of keeping me on the right path and not letting me get in trouble,” and football gave him a welcome respite from reality.
“I would say it just lets me to be me,” Gibbs said. “I don’t got to pretend to be anybody. I can just go out there and do myself and do what I do best.”
At Dalton, Gibbs did everything best.
He ran for 2,554 yards and 40 touchdowns and topped 1,000 yards receiving as a senior, when he was named Georgia’s 6A Offensive Player of the Year. Land fed Gibbs constantly on offense, and when he tried to rest Gibbs in practice the next week, he inevitably looked up to find Gibbs with pads on going full-contact as the team’s top cornerback on the defensive side of the field.
“I’m (going), ‘Jahmyr, I’m trying to rest you.’ And he’d be like, ‘Coach, I don’t need rest, I need work,’” Land said. “That kind of became our little tagline, I don’t need rest, I need work. And so when he got into games, I just was like — it’s kind of like that great line in ‘Secretariat’ when the daughter says, ‘Hey, let him run his race.’ It’s that thing. Just let him run. Let him do it, and he’ll do it, man. He’ll go as long as you’ll let him run.”
A four-star recruit who Land called “the best athlete in the state his senior year,” Gibbs begged to cover the other team’s best receiver most weeks, and delivered more memorable plays than Land can count on offense.
In one game against rival Creekview, Gibbs had a Jimmy Chitwood moment after Land drew up an inside zone run that called for him to be a decoy out of a formation Dalton almost always used on sweeps.
“It’s that moment from ‘Hoosiers,’ you know where he’s drawing the play for Jimmy to be decoy, and then all the guys are like … ‘Coach, let Jimmy take the shot, he’s our best player,’” Land said. “He said, ‘Coach, run (the play) Brown.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. They think we’re going to run that, but we’re going to run inside zone.’ He said, ‘Coach, run Brown.’ I said, ‘I know, I know. They’re going to think that, they’re going to overshift, they’re going to stunt and we’re going to gig ‘em on the backside.’
“And he takes his hand and he puts it on my arm, and he says, ‘Coach, run Brown and I’ll score.’ And it was so — it was like this extraterrestrial moment happened, and I can’t say anything but like, ‘Brrooown,’ (real slowly). That’s like all that would come out. Well, what does he do? Goes 67 yards. I don’t even know that we got anybody outside. He runs Brown, goes 67 yards for a touchdown.”
Gibbs proved dynamic at Georgia Tech. He returned a kick 75 yards on his first college touch and led the Yellow Jackets in all-purpose yards and touchdowns as a true freshman, despite missing three games with a leg injury.
As a sophomore, he ran for 746 yards on 143 carries, and added another 470 yards receiving. He tired of losing at Georgia Tech, and put his name in the transfer portal after the 2021 season.
“He wanted to win,” Choice, the former NFL running back who also left Tech after the 2021 season, said. “See, Jah was accomplishing so much on the football field, if you go back and look at what he said, he didn’t care about none of that. He just wanted to win.”
Gibbs had his most prolific rushing season at Alabama last year and helped the Tide to an 11-2 record. After a slow start with his new team — Gibbs had single-digit rushing attempts in Alabama’s first four games — he became the Tide’s weapon of choice when the offense needed a big play.
“The Detroit Lions just got the best overall athlete in this draft,” former Alabama linebacker Will Anderson Jr., the No. 3 pick of the draft, told the Free Press at the end of Round 1. “I mean, he can line up at wide receiver, he can line up at running back. He can do it all. He’s so elusive in the backfield, his cuts are amazing, his routes are amazing. Everything he do is amazing. They really just got a really great player that can do everything and be a dynamic threat anywhere on the field for them.”
Yet almost no one — Gibbs included — expected him to go 12th overall in the draft.
Not because he wasn’t talented, because of the position he plays.
Running backs have long had short shelf lives in the NFL, and Gibbs (5 feet 9, 199 pounds) is far from the biggest back. Teams tend to split their backfield workload between two and sometimes three players. Most are wary of giving running backs big second contracts.
Saquon Barkley was the only running back to average more than 50 snaps per game last season, and both he and last year’s NFL leading rusher, Josh Jacobs, are currently slated to play the 2023 season on the franchise tag.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes said Gibbs’ talent defies positional value, and his role on offense won’t be that of a traditional back in Detroit. The Lions signed David Montgomery to a three-year contract in free agency, and he and Gibbs are expected to share backfield reps in 2023, with the ability to play side by side.
“They’re football players and if you believe that they can have an impact for you on the football field then you just go ahead and take them,” Holmes said. “Obviously, we had thoughts of maybe (he would be there with our second first-round pick) at 18, but we didn’t feel great about it and so when we were able to select him at 12, that’s when all the texts started coming in of, ‘He would have been gone by 15.’ Just a lot of picks, a lot of people saying they wanted to trade up. They wanted to get in. So I wouldn’t have even felt good of (getting) him staying at 18. But again, it’s not about just don’t pick a running back because that’s not how we really view him.”
Choice, who coached both Robinson and Gibbs, said he knows of six NFL running backs coaches who were ticked the Lions took Gibbs at 12 because they thought their teams had a chance to land him later in Round 1.
Like Robinson, the eighth pick of the draft, Choice said Gibbs’ unique skill set is worthy of a first-round pick, especially in today’s NFL.
“Because they’re going to block, and they got to run the football, and you can put them out there, have mismatches against linebackers cause they’ll beat them one-on-one in their sleep,” Choice said. “So they cause trouble for a defense because you got to account for them all three downs. And when you can do that like (Christian) McCaffrey, when you can do that like (Alvin) Kamara, when you can do that, it adds a different dynamic instead of just being a first- and second-down back and coming off the field on third down. Them dudes going to stay on the field on third down, and you better make sure you cover them because they’ll break your heart.”
When NFL teams asked Choice who was better, Robinson or Gibbs, he told them it depended on what they were looking for. Robinson is bigger, has more initial quickness and breaks more tackles; Gibbs has more game-breaking speed and big-play ability.
“Do you need one to do everything, be your bell cow to run it 20, 25 times? That’s Bijan,” Choice said. “If you need one to run it 10 or 15 times but catch it five, 10, that’s probably Gibbs if you’ve got a bigger back. It’s just whatever you deem is important for your team you can pick either or.”
Choice said one of his favorite plays from Gibbs was a block he made on a quarterback draw, when he picked up a blitzing linebacker to spring a 30-or-so-yard gain. At Georgia Tech, Choice said Gibbs turned everything into a competition, even running gassers, when he would sometimes hold back on his start to try to catch teammates from behind.
That jives with what Land experienced at Dalton, where he said Gibbs was so competitive “he’d race you to the hot dog line” and a player he never worried about doing the wrong thing off the field. In recent years, he’d often find his now eighth-grade son up late on the night before games, playing video games with Gibbs.
“If there’s ever been anybody come through the National Football League draft that deserved a moment, that kid deserved that moment from what life has dealt him, and the hard work that he’s put in, and the lemonade that he’s made from lemons,” Land said. “That kid deserved every moment that happened, so I’m just excited that he’s got it, and I’m telling you it’s going to be fun to see what he does with it.
“I can promise you this, in two years, there’s no one in the Detroit organization that’s going to say to themselves, sitting in the locker room or sitting in the suites or wherever and say, ‘We took him too early.’ I promise you that. There won’t be one person that won’t say, ‘I’m glad we put that kid on the team.’ Whether we got him at 12, 20, eight, it don’t matter. That kid is worth everything we’re paying him and he will be that guy. He will be that guy.”

2023.06.08 16:04 faceless-owl Traversable Wormhole UFO Hypothesis

For starters, everything I'm saying here is just conjecture, of course. After seeing the recent news about the UFO and occupants seen in Las Vegas described here and here, I noticed many similarities in the past descriptions of Dyad Scout Crafts.
This got me thinking about why these crafts are seemingly "crashing" and a couple of handful of occupants are witnessed. I also thought about the many testimonies of abduction witnesses who describe the insides of these small crafts being exponentially larger than the exteriors. I was also pondering why the interiors of these small crafts are described as being incredibly spartan with zero amenities of any kind. This doesn't bode well for inter(steller, dimensional, temporal) long distance travel.
My hypothesis is that these small scout craft are exactly that. Scout crafts that are "tethered" to a type of mothership via something like a traversable wormhole and wifi sort of connection. Think of them as your average commuter automobile that leaves the garage for the occupants to go about their daily tasks.
On the mothership, there would be areas and rooms that have direct access to the scout ships at any given moment in time. Potentially limited by unknown factors, but it would be like walking from your kitchen into your garage - while your garage is in another city. This would explain the perception of the interiors of the ships being larger than the exterior; it would explain the lack of a need for any sort of amenity on the scout crafts; and might explain why these crafts are "crashing" sometimes.
If there is some sort of disruptance of the "tether" between the crafts, the scout may be rendered inoperable to some degree. This could have dire results as far as causing a legitimate crash via impact - or a controlled touchdown. This would leave the occupants stranded until the connection could be restored, or until a new connection was established and a cleanup crew can move in and fix the mess. Similar to what is described in the accounts above.
Our government may have figured out a way to separate these tethers, which would explain the potential ability of an acquisition. That being said, I'm not saying this hypothesis works for all scenarios and may be just one type of scenario involving these crafts.

2023.06.08 14:15 Necessary-Rip-6612 Asking for payment of electricity bill

I live in a shared flat, last autumn all my roommates moved for various reasons (new bf, new job, study abroad) and I got 3 new flatmates. For unrelated reasons I was in a low place and stopped taking care of myself, bills and whatnot. Just went into survival mode, went to work and went back home. I quickly got back on track after a few months and sorted everything out. Sadly tho I never told two of my new flatmates that I was responsible for the electric bill, and they would have to pay me monthly for it. So now I'm terrified of telling them that they owe me almost a years worth of their share of the bill and don't know how to tell them.
It's a large sum, not enormous, I have been able to pay it myself, but I'd rather not let my inaction and fear rule me anymore. One of them are away back at their parents for the summer and the other one is leaving any day now for the same. Hopefully I'll get enough courage to do it while they are away.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Stock futures are little changed Thursday as rally pauses: Live updates

Stock futures were flat on Thursday, as investors awaited the next market catalyst and digested the recent rally in stocks.
Futures linked to the S&P 500 ticked higher by 0.01%, while Nasdaq 100 futures inched down by 0.01%. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained just 2 points.
GameStop shares tumbled roughly 19%. The video game retailer fired its CEO Matthew Furlong and appointed Ryan Cohen as its executive chairman.
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite are coming off a down session. The broad-market index closed 0.38% lower, while the Nasdaq dropped 1.29%. The 30-stock Dow was the outlier, with a gain of 0.27% or 91.74 points.
“We’re in a bit of a news vacuum: Earnings are done, the debt ceiling is resolved, and we’re waiting for the Fed next week,” said Barbara Doran, CEO of BD8 Capital Partners on “Closing Bell: Overtime” on Wednesday. “It’s widely expected they will pause, but it’s really going to be important what their guidance is and what the [consumer price index] number on Tuesday will be and the [producer price index].”
Indeed, investors seem to be in a holding pattern while awaiting the Federal Reserve’s upcoming policy meeting on June 13 and 14. Economic signs suggest that inflation is inching down, even as it remains above the central bank’s 2% target. Wage growth, for instance, is slowing. Wages rose 5.3% on an annual basis in May, down 0.4 percentage point from April, according to data from Indeed. Markets are pricing about a 66% chance that the Fed keeps rates steady at the next meeting, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
More economic data will arrive on Thursday morning, with weekly jobless claims and wholesale inventories due.

Good morning traders and investors of the stocks sub! Welcome to the new trading day and a fresh start! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Thursday, June the 8th, 2023-

2023.06.08 13:10 Pure-Scheme-1530 Complete Career Guide for Business Analysts:

Complete Career Guide for Business Analysts:

Career Guide for Business Analysts
In the field of big data, there are numerous positions with the title "analyst," each with a distinct area of specialization. A career as a business analyst is an excellent choice for those with an aptitude for computer science and a background in business because it allows you to use both abilities to assist organizations to establish data-driven strategies in operations spanning from production to marketing and so much more.
Businesses across all sectors are looking for business analysts to join their teams so they can profit from the massive amount of data they gather. The business analyst profession can be the best fit for you if you're seeking a data science career that will be rewarding and sustainable over the long term.
The Development of Business Analysis:
Understanding a company's continuously changing needs and recommending technology solutions to improve its systems and procedures are the responsibilities of a business analyst, also known as a management analyst. In this context, a business analyst is typically seen as the intermediary between the business and IT departments.
With the invention of computers in the 1970s and 1980s, businesses started to automate electronic paper-based procedures. Business analysts appeared on the scene in the 1980s and 1990s to integrate this new technology with Business Analytics Certification.
What is a Business Analyst?
Business analysts establish strategic plans and analyze present processes for an organization. A deep understanding of the particular industry, trends, and norms is necessary for this. The communication of plans between internal departments and external stakeholders is a crucial component of the business analyst's job.
  • Influential People:
Business analysts' major responsibility is to introduce change in an organization, according to the International Institute of Business Analysts (IIBA), which views business analysts as change agents. These adjustments could be high-level, like major structural or policy changes, or they could be more specific, like identifying cost-cutting opportunities. In either case, the adjustments made by a business analyst need to assist a company in identifying and seizing fresh prospects.
  • Fulfilling Commercial Needs:
Business analysts will also develop or update computer systems to fulfil their business needs. The business analyst helps with the system's testing and deployment as well as providing the IT department with requirements for creating this new technological system.
What Do Business Analysts Actually Do?
A business analyst examines data sets carefully in search of opportunities to boost productivity within an organization. In this sense, the business analyst frequently serves as a liaison between several departments in an organization, looking for methods to streamline procedures across the board. The business analyst must be able to communicate successfully with each of these organisational divisions, occasionally acting as a mediator and offering solutions in a way that colleagues can understand and stakeholders will grasp.
Business analysts frequently perform one of four types of analysis:
  • Strategic planning: recognizing a company's evolving needs
  • Through business model research, regulatory and marketing efforts were identified.
  • Creating standardized processes for workflows
  • Interpreting the needs of the IT department through systems analysis
Check out this on How To Build A Career in Business Analytics: A Step-by-Step Guide.
Three Steps to Launch a Business Analyst Career:
Step 1: Obtain a degree in accounting, finance, or business administration at the undergraduate level:
In addition to earning your bachelor's degree in business, you should study some computer programming. Different business analyst careers require varying levels of technical proficiency, but the better fit you appear to be, the more adept you are with programming.
Step 2: Get experience working:
You can start off by volunteering with a small business or by taking advantage of summer internship opportunities to gain expertise. Volunteer to assist with business analyst-type assignments if you are currently employed by a corporation in another manner.
Being a business analyst entails a wide range of activities, hence there are several transferrable skills that can be applied in this role. People can enter the sector either with expertise in a specific area of business, such as billing, customer service, or workflow, or with an understanding of a broad industry, such as finance, telecommunications, or government.
Step 3: Obtain a Master's degree or a higher level of certification:
Numerous colleges and universities offer graduate certificates and master's degrees in business analytics, with courses in operations research, project management, database analytics, and predictive analytics.
The IIBA offers a professional certificate called the Certified Business Analysis Professional for people with extensive knowledge of business analytics, as well as a number of other more specialized certifications that may match the particular career path you had in mind.
Qualifications for a Career as a Business Analyst:
To be successful as a business analyst, hard and soft talents must be merged. These consist of:
  • Talents in communication:
Business analysts must collaborate in order to gather and convey occasionally complex technical knowledge to a variety of internal stakeholders. They will need to express their answers clearly and negotiate with the parties involved. To persuade higher management of the viability of their initiatives, business analysts must be confident in their abilities to lead and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of business and critical thinking:
Business analysts need to have a broad understanding of the organisation they are dealing with. They must understand the roles of numerous persons and departments, as well as how those departments interact and rely on one another. Additionally, they must be able to understand the particular organisation in the context of the overall sector. Because of their business acumen, they will be able to appropriately examine data points and develop future strategic strategies.
  • Technical expertise:
A wide number of technological tools are available for use by business analysts, including programmes for diagramming, data processing, wireframing, managing requirements, and presenting results. As they gain experience in database management, systems engineering, big data mining, and programming, business analysts become more technically skilled.
Career Prospects for Business Analysts:
As firms continue to place a premium on making data-driven decisions, business analysts will become increasingly more important. The BLS predicts that the employment of management analysts will increase by 11% between 2021 and 2031, which is much faster than average job growth.
Business analyst job titles alone offer excellent employment prospects. For instance, it is anticipated that between 2021 and 2031, the employment of operations research analysts will increase by 23%. Business analysts that specialize in supply networks and production schedules are known as operations research analysts. The predicted employment growth for data scientists is 36%. 2023.06.08 12:30 Jakzeti1453 I am completely astonished by the posts from the US, I ran the Math for Austria for comparison

So, most apparentments I can get here with an area of 35 square metres (370 square feet) to 50 square metres (540 square feet) go from 450€ to 650€ a month unless you live in a major city like Vienna or Graz. 35 square metres already is pretty decent, I don't think you would need anything bigger unless you have kids, even living together with a partner 50 square metres is perfectly fine.
So for other monthly expenses, you can get food for a person without eating out for around 80-100€ a month.
Heating is around 120-160€ a month but it varies
Water single person about 30€ a month
Electricity got pretty expensive recently so you could propably pay 80-100€ a month.
Other commodities like internet, streaming services, subscriptions, phone provider should add up to around 100€ a month if we are generous.
Last but not least transport if you can go where you need via public transport wich most people can do you pay around 80€ a month, if you need (want) a car you go with propably 400€ a month for gas insurance.
Insurance in general like for your home, propably also around 100€
So now for pay, we measure pay monthly but you just have to multiply by 14 (yes 14 we have 14 pay periods, you get payed monthly except for one month in summer and around December where you get payed the monthly wage twice except for that the second payment is taxed less)
So anyway if you start working at a company with a finished education in any field, wich pretty much everyone has at around 18 years old you would get around 2000-2200€ per month, wich roughly translates into 1450-1650€ after taxes. That is full time job 38.5h, with free public healthcare, sick leave and mandatory minimum of 5 weeks vacation a year + extra pay if you have to come in holidays, Sundays + extra pay for having to work shifts+ extra pay for potentially dangerous work/hard work (wich is the case for most work)
So let's add up the costs, if we go with the just the normal pay a month not taking 14 pay periods or extra pay into account
600€ rent+100€food+300€ heating/wateelectricity+100€ "commodities+400€ transport+100€ insurance=1600€
So with a monthly pay after tax of 1450-1650€ for the average person who just started working, you can see why some might be struggling, especially considering some might only earn 1500€ full time like it's the case in some retail, 1500€ roughly translates to 1200€ after tax.
But for the most part I was very, generous with the monthly payments you gotta make and for most people it's rather an inconvenience because you can't go eat out once a week anymore or go to some event for 100€ twice a month.
Unless you really earn 1100€ working full time you won't be having troubles with you monthly payments, something might break down like your car or washing machine and it will give you financial instability for some time but nothing where you would go without food or where you would get evicted, you really would need to be very careless with your money.
So what I wanted to express, yeah I hope you can see why some people might be struggling here in Europe too, but it is nowhere near as horrible as in the US as far as I can see and it is pretty much unheard of that anyone would work 2 jobs, if you work 40h a week, that's enough for you to live a life here, never saw anyone work 60h because they need to, to survive.

2023.06.08 12:12 TheBirdOfFire What caused the electricity prices in 2022 in Europe to spike the way they did and why have they gone down so much since?

I hope this is the right place to post. I am a sustainability science student in the Netherlands and I am hoping to clear some of my misconceptions about electricity prices and what happened over the past year in Europe that made them fluctuate the way they did.
I am currently living in a student facility that has a fixed rate for utilities, including gas and electricity, therefore I never spent much time looking into prices for electricity until now. Though, I remember that in the second half of last year electricity and gas prices were a hot topic here, like in many parts of Europe, as prices had spiked to unprecedented levels.
Recently I bought a new PC that uses about 600W at full load. I wanted to look what the cost per hour of usage was, for when I eventually move somewhere where I pay my own electricity bills. Based on electricity prices I found the cost came out to be way lower than I expected. According to this website, the average cost for a MWh in the Netherlands at the moment is about 90€, with similar figures in other European countries.
Then I calculated my own hypothetical costs at these prices:
1 MWh/600W = 1666h
90€/1666h= 0,054€/h
at 25h/week, it would cost me about 70€ a year in electricity prices. Since this number was way lower than expected, I looked into historical prices and saw that electricity prices have gone way down since the peak of 447€/MWh in August 2022. I want to better understand what exactly happened for the price to spike so much and why it has recovered. I know that the war in Ukraine had something to do with it but I don't understand the relationship so clearly. I know that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline had been shut down in September 2022 by Russia, and that it was later blown up.
I have a bunch of questions now and I am hoping to learn a few things from people more knowledgeable in this field:

  1. is my calculation wrong? or are the numbers I found online off?
  2. Was the shortage of natural gas the sole reason for the spike in prices of electricity and gas in Europe?
  3. If so, why did the prices of natural gas affect the prices in electricity to such an extreme degree? (I am aware electricity powerplants using natural gas, but AFAIK they only produce a small portion of electricity in Europe)
  4. Why have the prices gone back down since then?
  5. To what degree does inflation tie into all of this?

2023.06.08 10:23 RCalvin4 Best Charger Options - Renter Small Multifamily

So I fiiiinally got my 23’ GTPE not long ago, and I love just about everything about it, except my charging options… which right now are none at home. This may seem a bit off topic, but the lifestyle impact part of having an EV, especially one that is so tempting to burn through battery, is a huge part of the ownership experience.
I recently moved to an apartment in a 3 unit split townhome, and I share a large basement garage with another unit. All electric bills are averaged, so I can’t just plug in to a normal outlet whenever I park and have it be fair for the other two units, which is the owner’s major reluctance to installing a charger. The owner is up for it, but doesn’t want the bill splitting to be too onerous.
He is a contractor (which will cut costs) and there is easy access to the box, so a lvl 2 is on the table. However I need a system that can track usage, time, and if possible pricing at the time of charging. From some research it looks like the ChargePoint Home Flex 240v can create easy reports via an app, including utility price syncing, but I don’t know if the marketing is accurate or if there is a better system out there.
Any renters or landlords out there that have one and have any comments, or better systems to suggest? The main needs are: easy to read tracking / monthly usage reports / as accurate as can be cost accrual statements if possible.
Hopefully not violating any sub rules asking for specific recs, just trying to get the most out of my MachE owner experience, which will hopefully involve a lot less Safeway parking lot charging than there has been. DM answers welcome as well.
Thanks!

2023.06.08 08:39 ClassicHold6435 Model 3 vs Prius cost to fill up.

I'm debating about a model 3 base and a prius xle. I'll get both at sticker price. The prius is 32k msrp and the model 3 i around 42k msrp. I ran the math. I need to switch my electricity to time of use with the model 3 making my electric bill cost more to run my home stuff and even then it will cost me 28 cent per kwh to 48 cent a kwh depending on when i charge. 48 cent a kwh will hit me hard when i run my ac in the summer during the day. I live in CA. Costco gas is currently 4.45 per gallon. The model 3 gets around 3 mile per kwh and the prius gets 57 mpg. The prius would cost me 7 cent per mile but the tesla would cost me 9 cent per mile. If gas was 5.50 per gallon it would be the same as charging at home for 28 per kwh. If i had to charge it during the day it would be 48 cent per kwh and gas would need to be 9.50 dollar per gallon to break even with the tesla. How is going electric saving money? The car cost 10k more and the fill up cost more as well. As for maintains oil change are like 85 dollars at the stealership so its whatever.

Daily Minors Quick-Notes 6/7/23 - Whisenhunt Dominates and Bednar Returns
Carson Whisenhunt made his Double-A debut, and it was more of the same that he had been handing out all season. And the Giants 2021 1st round pick Will Bednar made his first appearance in a game in nearly a year, which is good news for the Giants. And in a shortened day, Luis Matos hit his second home run in Sacramento.

AAA: Las Vegas 8, Sacramento 5

Sacramento Notes:
  • Sacramento slugged out three home runs, but couldn’t pull out the win against Las Vegas. The home runs knocked in four of the team’s five runs. But Las Vegas got eight runs while getting just two home runs.
  • Luis Matos went 2-for-5 with his second Triple-A home run. It’s a bounce back for Matos after he went hitless in his last game (which he hadn’t done since May 26th). Matos now has a .375/.409/.545 batting line.
https://twitter.com/RiverCats/status/1666641366515056641?s=20
  • First baseman Jacob Nottingham went 1-for-4 with his sixth home run overall this season, and second with Sacramento. In his seven games as a River Cat, Nottingham is batting .423/.516/.692 with a double and two home runs, with one walk and four strikeouts.
https://twitter.com/RiverCats/status/1666639877700722688?s=20
  • The third and final home run was by Michael Gigliotti went 2-for-4, hitting his 3rd home run along with his 9th double. He has a batting line of .257/.371/.400, with nine doubles, a triple, and three home runs, with 24 walks to 26 strikeouts.
https://twitter.com/RiverCats/status/1666659695476740096?s=20
  • DH Joey Bart continued his rehab, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout and two HBP. Luckily, Bart seemed okay after each. In five games in this rehab sting, Bart is 2-for-17 (.118), with two HBP and no walks to eight strikeouts.
  • Shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald went 2-for-5, and got caught stealing for the first time this season. Since the start of June, Fitzgerald is 9-for-23 (.391).
  • Starting pitcher Drew Strotman gave up three runs in 4.0 innings, on five hits and four walks, with two strikeouts. Strotman’s ERA sits at 6.49, and is allowing a .292 batting average in 11 games this season.
  • Reliever Melvin Adón didn’t allow any runs, but struggled with his control. In 2.0 innings, he gave up one hit but also four walks with two strikeouts. Adón now has 27 walks in 26.0 innings, and 35 strikeouts.

AA: Richmond 6, Altona 1

Richmond Notes:
  • Carson Whisenhunt made his Double-A debut, and it was successful as the Squirrels got the win. With five shutout innings, he set the right tone for the game, although it was still scoreless when he exited. But after Altoona scored what would be their only run in the top of the sixth, the Squirrels scored four in the bottom half, led by a Riley Mahan home run, and they would take it.
  • Carson Whisenhunt went 5.0 shutout innings in his Double-A debut, striking out seven with two walks and two hits allowed. That comes after Whisenhunt had a 1.42 ERA in six starts at High-A and a 3.29 ERA in four starts at Low-A. Overall, in 44.0 innings, Whisenhunt has struck out 63 and walked only 14.
https://twitter.com/MiLB/status/1666620811816435712?s=20
  • The rest of the game was handled by Nick Zwack, who walked the first batter he faced and let him score, but held the line the rest of the way. In 4.0 innings, he allowed the one run on three hit and a walk, with six strikeouts.
  • First baseman Riley Mahan went 1-for-4 with the home run, and also added a walk. That was Mahan’s seventh home run of the season, and moved him into the team lead for homers. It broke a 4-game hitless streak for Mahan, but he now has a .191/.217/.389 batting line on the year.
  • DH Vaun Brown was 2-for-5 with a triple, his second at Richmond. After 12 games, that bumps his batting line up to .348/.434/.630, with three doubles, two triples, and two home runs, with five walks to 18 strikeouts.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1666609147633123328?s=20
  • Brett Auerbach was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base. The new month has been a turn around for Auerbach, and he’s now 6-for-18 (.333) with a double, and a walk against four strikeouts since the start of the month, against having a .153/.211/.190 batting line on the year.
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1666610904991924225?s=20
  • Second baseman Hayden Cantrelle went 2-for-3 with a double, his seventh of the season. It’s his first multi-hit game since May 24th. He’s batting .216/.392/.345 on the year. He also had the most literal rundown as a fielder (seriously, watch this highlight).
https://twitter.com/GoSquirrels/status/1666604073154490368?s=20
  • Center fielder Simon Whiteman went 2-for-4, with two singles and an outfield assist on the day. That put him back above the Mendoza Line after he dipped under it after the last game. Whiteman is now 3-for-14 (.214) with a double since the month of June started up.

High-A: Tri-City 10, Eugene 2

Eugene Notes:
  • Despite Eugene batting last, this game was, as all this week will be, played in Washington. This was just ugly from the start, literally, as Tri-City scored all ten of their runs in the first three innings to run away with this game.
  • The offense in this game was mostly thanks to Victor Bericoto, who went 3-for-3 with a walk and his now team-leading home run. He moves ahead of Luis Toribio and Grant McCray with his 9th home run in his 48th game. He’s closing in on his career high, which was 12 home runs he hit in 107 games in 2022. Bericoto now has a batting line of .297/.351/.500.
  • Grant McCray went hitless, but went 0-for-3 with three strikeouts and two walks. That gives McCray 71 strikeouts to 31 walks in 50 games this season. It’s a very slightly better rate from last season, when he had 170 to 67 walks in 120 games.
  • Welcome back Luis Toribio! Toribio has been out since coming out of the May 23rd game, when he drew a walk in his first plate appearance and left immediately. He was 1-for-4 on the day, which keeps his numbers steady, as he’s now got a batting line in .252/.357/.487.
  • It was a rough game for starter Eric Silva, who gave up two runs in an inning of work, on two hits and three walks while striking out two. It was Silva’s shortest start of the season, as his ERA jumped up to 4.19 from 3.82 after this one game.
  • Another pitcher with a rough game was Ty Weber, who gave up a season-high eight runs in 1.2 innings, allowing them on two walks and seven hits, two of which were home runs, while striking out two. That doubles his previous season-high in runs allowed, and jumped his ERA up to 8.25.
  • One reliever that did well was Joe Kemlage, who struck out four in 3.1 innings, allowing just two hits. Kemlage now has a4.61 ERA with 31 strikeouts to 11 walks in 27.1 innings.

Low-A: San Jose 4, Visalia 3

San Jose Notes:
  • San Jose edged out Visalia with a pair of 2-run innings. The first run San Jose scored came on a bases-loaded HBP, the second HBP in a row, and a sacrifice fly in the 3rd inning. Visalia would tie it, but then San Jose took the lead for good on a 2-run single by Turner Hill in the 6th.
  • Catcher Onil Perez went 2-for-5 on the day with two singles. Perez has a batting line of .311/.379/.400, with 14 walks to 15 strikeouts, and had five doubles, two triples, and a home run.
  • DH Turner Hill went 2-for-5 with two RBI. In six games, Hill is now 9-for-27 (.333) with a double, with two walks and three strikeouts, and five steals.
  • Right fielder Tanner O’Tremba was 1-for-4 with San Jose’s only extra-base hit, a double, with a walk. O’Tremba has 13 doubles now, to go with two triples and three home runs, giving him a batting line of .276/.387/.442.
  • Shortstop Jose Ramos went 1-for-3 with a HBP and two stolen bases. That gives Ramos 13 steals on 14 attempts in 46 games this season, and he’s now batting .213/.314/.328.
  • Starting pitcher Jack Choate gave up a run in 4.0 innings, on two hits and a walk, with five strikeouts. It’s the first run Choate has allowed in his last three appearances. Choate now has a 2.31 ERA with 56 strikeouts to 17 walks in 39.0 innings.
  • Reliever Sean Newcomb gave up a run in 2.0 innings, on two hits, with three strikeouts and no walks. It was Newcomb’s second game with San Jose, and he now has allowed the one run in 3.0 innings, with five strikeouts to no walks.

ACL Giants Orange Notes:
  • Second baseman Armando Alvarez led the Orange team in a bad offensive day, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. The 28-year old started the season in Sacramento, but got injured on April 12th, and is rehabbing his way back. In two games at Arizona, went 3-for-6 with a double.
  • Designated hitter Derwin Laya went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. He’s 4-for-9 (.444) after three games this season.
  • Making his first rehab start was former 1st round pick Will Bednar, who went 2.0 innings, striking out five while allowing a run on two hits and two walks. Bednar was last on the field in an official game on June 12th of last season.

2023.06.08 06:47 throw-away-7565 I think my uncle a pedo

Tldr I think my uncle is a pedophile and I don't know what to do
I'm fairly new to this whole posting for help but have recently found myself in a horrible delema and can't possibly do anything about it for some info I'm 15 and my family (,mom, dad, brother18,other brother14 , sister10) Live with my aunt and her 2 sons we all get along REALLY well as we grew up always having sleep overs around every week and always went on vacation with each other now my uncle whos always been in our lives as he has shared custody with my aunt this they work around it differently see my uncle is an illegal imagrnt and so when he and my aunt broke up they didn't actually divorce and he stayed in our lives solely because he's a great dad who pays for around 80% of my aunt's funds for her kids and she herself can't work due to being on the spectrum so she receives money monthly for her and her eldest son as he's also on the spectrum and is slowly going blind in one eye due to problems involving birth
Now my cousins go to stay with him every other week and he pays for everything but eversince there breakup he's found another women who already has kids and he still manages to take care of both families partially due to the monthly income from the states checks now the delema starts with the fact that we're living with them as of 2 years and he pays for half of the mortgage water electric and likewise bills while my parents pay for the other half ,it's a 4 bedroom house with 2 living rooms one when u enter the house and that's the room we made as my room my other siblings stay in the other shared room with a bunk bed and a normal bed they have there setups and everything we own a cat and a dog I own 2 ferrets that stay in my room (well taken care of)and my 2 cousins have there own rooms while my aunt has her own room that leaves my parents they sleep on couches in the 2nd living room which is connected to the kitchen and it's been like this for 2 years
Some info about my room or" living room" is that I have a mini fridge my bed and a ferret cage along with my desktop and laptop my "door" is actually a curtain that connects to the hallway I do online school and my room is set up in a way where it's the first room you walk into when you open the door to the house so those leaves for awkward experiences when it comes to the fact that I sleep her so lots of times especially during summer with my messed up sleep schedule I sleep during the day to afternoon and during this time my uncle sometimes drops by cus he lives nearby and he likes to check in at times so lots of times he comes by when I'm asleep RIGHT IN FRONT of anyone who comes to our house
Anyways now we are stuck living with our aunt as my mom has 15k saved in a secret account(for down payment) only I know about due to her and me being close and me being the only mature child when it comes to certain things well she's saving for a house and got that money from tax refund 2yrs And is currently trying her best to get a good paying job for a family of 8+(cousins added) Along with this she has a rly bad credit due to bad financial choices yes I'k it happens to everyone and she's working really hard to fix her mistakes but is finding much difficultys fixing her wrongs as for my dad the money he's making 800 a check (weekly) is being used on food+repairs+bills/phone/mortgage/insurance/ect. So we rly aren't making enough to leave and get a better house or start renting
All of this is important cus it's relivant to the way I'm thinking about the situation at hand let's get to that . Alright so here's where it starts lately around this month I've been picking up on red flags about my uncle and deciy to ignore them as "he's my uncul all he's ever done is good for our family he's been here for to long to notice something now" is what I would tell myself and what would these increasingly red flags be well, it started when he casually brought up to my mom that he wished I was his daughter as I'm so great and he sees me as his daughter and how I'm"so much more smarter than my cousins" and how "I'm glad her potential didn't go to waste with you caring for her " keep in mind this is all being said in Spanish well that was all good I thought that it was more a a bragging right and was happy he thought highly of me RIGHT?? Well after that day 1 week passed I was feeling very anxious and decided to go on a walk with my much loved mom all good but when we got back 8:??pm he was at the house and we greeted him well her but he seemed to notice I was down and decided to "spoil me " so he sent my mom 100$ and we went to Walmart and bought me sum books (mangas) and got sum snacks spent the rest on my ferrets and we bought sum cleaning supplies allls good right??
No cus 3-4 days later he comes to pick my cousins up 1 by one for them each to get 1 week with him to work and make money I thought it was nice so made a joke out of it and he said "oh well if you want I can take you with me but just for 2. Days and you'll have to be alone cus it's 1 by 1 " so I was weirded out and let it slip a bit cus u know "uncle would never" and so let it be but the next week he came by I jokingly said "I'm gonna need a pass to let you in any I'd?" And he replied by "KISSING ME ON THE HEAD" might not seem like a lot but dude doesn't even do that to his own kids and the last interaction u had with him didn't end well so ever since then I would avoid hime as I felt weird and dunno a bit scared to see what would happen next and BOY was u right now and behold 1 week later he pops by I see him park it's 7ph suns down and I decided to act like I slept early to avoid the guy I didn't want to see or talk with him after everything
something was just not feeling right so i did what I did and faked being asleep in hoped I would actually fall asleep and avoid him welp,....... He found his time and between the 2 minutes no one was near (everyone in their room ) mom and dad were at my step grandma's house ) he went and closed my door(curtains) I could tell do to it being like a shower curtain the roll in part but actual thicc curtains so no one can see pass ( my choice due to not liking the light pass through from the hallway )he layed down right next to me I was sleeping on my left side facing the wall he went and sorta spooned me but in a way where you are trying to be carful as to not wake them up and afterwards he sniffed my hair ?? And neck then sorta put his hand on my ass and very lightly squeezed it I had to lay there for 2-5 mins and wait till he left I felt so bad and confused not sad just confused
I don't know what to do so I told my younger brother 1yr gap and he's the most trust worthy and helpful ,after I told him we talked about how if I'm sleeping and he's not that he'd make sure to stay in my room with me Incase and if I'm awake and he's sleeping I'll go to his room and wait it out great .now problem still stands after his groping and actions I fake woke up and said hi he looked shocked but I played it off he fell for it and even want in for the "so when will you come and work for me " remember those 2 days of just me working for him that he promised =\ the balls this dam man has but I rly can't do anything I I talk or tell my mom then the whole family is fucked house is gone cousins don't get a dad we prob will stop talking with my cousin finding a house to rent will fuck it up even more then there goes for our hard worked credit and bam forever changed family I rly don't wanna ruin everything and feel like the soul reasoned everything was messed up along with not wanting to mess my mom's chance at finally getting a house when u told my brother about this and eveieas when I finally started crying I'm glade to have him and as I'm writing this I'm a bit emotional and feel so bad about myself
As of writing this it happens about 4hrs ago and now I'm just stuck in between what's my go to in one way there's snitching him out on the other I can keep it to myself and deal with it with the help of my brother but I'm still vunribal to him when both my brother and I are asleep and I think his lust or whatever is getting stronger ras the times he's been acting out on me have increased and the time in-between have decreased I'm afraid for my family and for me I just hope he doesn't touch me any more .I posted this here as I don't know much about where to post the right things hope this finds it's way to someone that. Can help he find a way through this without hiring my familys relationship

2023.06.08 04:40 soflaben10 Looking to buy a house with a Good Leap system installed almost a year and a half ago, I have some general questions ?

I looked at a property today that I really like however it has a solar system that has a contract that I would have to take over. I do not have the contract just yet so I’m looking for some general info. My information is limited as well.
The company is Good Leap and the seller says they have a payment of $100 a month for the system. They had the electricity bills which average around $70 a month with the solar. So in my eyes that’s $170 cost for my electric bill $70 and $100
The seller claims that they still owe $30k on the solar. Does this generally mean that this system is financed to own or is this a lease contract ?
Other that have this system is it worth it ?
The seller claims that that his bill before solar was $200+ and now is around $70 on avg . With the install financing $100 it seems like there is not much of an advantage would love to get more info.
Should I just run from this deal, even though I really love the house ?
