It seems Rockstar games isn’t the cybersecurity rockstar it may have thought, as Grand Theft Auto 6 videos, source code, and Rockstar in-house documents are leaking online. In an interesting twist of fate, this might be coming from the recent Uber threat actor, who will likely have a laundry list of criminal charges should the United States catch up with them.
Less than 24 hours from writing, a forum post on a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) site, which will remain unlinked, went up from user “teapotuberhacker,” who claimed to have some stolen data. In the post, they wrote that they obtained and published “90 footage/clips from GTA 6” and had more data like “GTA 5 and 6 source code and assets” or a “GTA 6 testing build.” Of course, users on the forum were immediately skeptical of the breach, given how early it is for this sort of thing, but the info we are beginning to get back indicates that this is the real deal.

Furthermore, within the forum post, teapotuberhacker links himself to the recent Uber breach and explains that he got his GTA VI data from employee Slack channels and Rockstar’s internal Confluence, a corporate wiki tool. But, of course, Slack channels and Confluence pages are juicy targets for hackers and threat actors alike, so it could just be pure coincidence and someone trying to claim the infamy.

In any event, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has since confirmed that this leak is real, so whether this is the Uber hacker or not is irrelevant. Thus, as mentioned, this leak could be one of the biggest in video game history and a massive problem for Rockstar games. Until we have an official statement from the company, it is unclear what kind of effect this might have, such as game setbacks and delays. Hopefully, we will find out more soon. I am building/running a Champaign that is law vs chaos. Not the classic good vs evil. I didn’t tell my players it is this type of game because I didn’t want them to look/meta every thing through that lens. Tonight due to scheduling. The classic real evil of DND we couldn’t play tonight. I asked them if their characters were religious and if they were what Gods did they worship. And I’ve found two of the three are chaos leaning. Time sure flies, doesn't it? We are about to ring in a brand new year, and as we do so, the release of Grand Theft Auto V is now more than six years old (and is fast approaching five years on PC). Given the time that has elapsed, it is certainly possible (maybe even plausible) that Rockstar Games is deep in development on Grand Theft Auto VI. To that end, a supposed QA tester claims to have the skinny on the next installment.
We should preface this information with a disclaimer. There is no way of knowing if the supposed QA tester is what the person claims to be, or if any of the leaked details are accurate. All we know is that it's been a long time since the last Grand Theft Auto gaming (though Grand Theft Auto Online has been receiving continued updates and support).
What is interesting about the situation, though, is the anonymous source first posted the leak on Reddit, and it was removed by the moderators. It's not clear if perhaps Rockstar Games pressured the mods to take down the content. All that said, let's jump into it.
The folks at Dexerto managed to preserve the post. According to the original poster, the map in GTA VI is "huge" and covers to major cities, those being Carcer City and Vice City. Carcer City is based on Boston, and Vice City is based on Miami.
According to the leaker, GTA V is a "schoolyard playground" compared to the massive map in GTA VI. The leakers says Rockstar Games improved the weather effects and polished things up, borrowing from its experience on Red Dead Redemption 2.
"The map is huge, like stupendously huge, hence the game's emphasis on air travel. It makes GTA 5 look like a schoolyard playground. There is an array of atmospheric effects that bring out the life in everything. Light pollution, hurricane winds, morning fog, etc. I've never seen an open world game this realistic before," the leaker wrote.

Assuming all that is accurate, it would be a good opportunity to inject real-time ray tracing into the mix, though there is no mention of that. Instead, the focus is on the size of the map. The leaker says it's so big that it's "a little awkward traveling from Boston to Miami," in part because there are no other major cities in between them, in the game. Expect a lot of air travel, if that's the case.
The leaker also says GTA VI will again put players in control of multiple characters, just like in GTA V. One of the protagonists is said to be "an undercover cop or something," and other might possibly be a sibling. In addition, the leaker says Rockstar Games "complete revamped" the mission design.
"You can permanently abandon some missions or take different routes that sprout different consequences," the leaker says.

I won't argue whether your decision is a good or a bad one. That can be left for /DefendingAIArt . This post is about those moderator teams that have more or less made up their minds and are trying to craft policy.

Terminology

"AI art" is not a clear enough term. Here are some edge cases that you should consider (I'll go into what I think your policy should lean on in the next section):

• Adobe's MAX software uses generative AI models for inpainting (adding generative elements to an image), outpainting (so-called "uncropping"), adaptive pasting, style transformations, etc. All of these are artist tools meant to be used by artists in realizing their own vision, but they are most certainly "AI art."
• Artists who realize their own creative vision (not simply prompt engineers) are increasingly using AI tools as part of their workflow. This can be as low-impact as using a text2ai prompt to develop their concept, composition, stylistic options or just for inspiration. It can also involve specific editing tools such as Stable Diffusion's inpainting, controlnet, img2img, and other facilities. It can even involve AI upscaling through SD or much simpler models.
• Prompted art can be directly based on an artist's own work, either as a part of the prompt or using so-called embeddings generated from one's own work.
• All modern cellphone cameras and most digital cameras involve AI-based models that assist in the generation of the image.

None of this is to argue the legal or ethical issues, but just to present the practical difficulties in identifying what will almost certainly be the ever-expanding horizon of artists whose workflows involve AI art, perhaps even in ways that they don't know.

How do you identify AI art?

Short answer: don't.
Long answer: Identify the qualities that you want to avoid. For example, if you wish to ban low-effort content then call that out. Use AI examples if you feel they're illustrative, but the AI shouldn't be the focus if your actual concern is getting flooded with tons of low-effort noise.
If your concern is sourcing, then call that out (though I don't think any of us know the sourcing of the AI models used in our cameras... we only know about the sourcing of models like Stable Diffusion because that information was made explicitly public in a peer-reviewed paper, which seems an odd sort of punishment for forthrightness while we continue to accept output from unknown sourced models in consumer equipment, digital editing software, etc.)
Here's a sample that suggests one way you could deal with AI art flooding a sub.
Low-effort images that are generated without any more input from the user than a textual prompt or the like are not allowed. If you are challenged on a submission, you must be able to provide evidence of your own creative input. Either sketches that led up to the work, the editing layers you use, or the process pipeline and intermediate steps involved. If the work is digital photography, then the original with relevant metadata may be requested as part of the verification.
As a guideline, if your art is the result of a text2ai prompt and nothing more, it is absolutely not allowed. If your art is a trivial modification to such a text2ai process, then it will not be allowed. But art which involves AI tools (which includes most modern digital art in one form or another) will be evaluated on the above criteria.
