2023.06.10 19:48 Serious_Ad23 Am i missing out on good timing in the aviation industry?

Hello everyone,
Im an 18 year old and aspiring to be a pilot. Im confident that i want my career as a pilot but i still have college to go through after graduating high school. I think college will be a good back up incase being a pilot doesn't work out for any reason but im mainly going because my parents want me to go. I cant help but wonder if im missing out on some good timing where i can progress faster in the aviation industry since we just came out if covid. But at the same time, i also got accepted to somewhat prestigious school (NYU) which was at the top of my list for universities and having a parent working there, i get a 90% discount on tuition (60k down to 6k/yr) and i dont want to throw all that away either (i know which college/degrees doesnt matter to airline). My parents do support me being a pilot AFTER i go to college and believe i should focus at one thing at a time which i agree with as well so im not so sure about doing college and getting licenses and certificates as the same time. So i guess my question is how long do you think this fast progression/good timing in the aviation industry will last and what would you do in my situation?
Thanks for your time!

2023.06.09 03:22 No_Nectarine_743 Can I survive NYU/NYC by teaching English part-time as a full-time student?

I will be starting my second master's degree in international education (focusing on studies abroad) this fall at NYU (my BA is in International Studies & my 1st MA is in Anthropology). I got a pretty good scholarship if I go full-time, and when searching for part-time jobs in NYC, I usually see a variety of office management jobs alongside at least 2-5 ESL/TEFL jobs posted, so I figured I should get a TEFL certification (all the job postings mention this requirement & I absolutely cannot afford the CERTA) to teach part-time while going to school, which seems like a complementary gig to my degree program. I am also applying for various other campus opportunities that come with stipends. Although I do have a background in office management and administration, in college I was a writing tutor (and gained some formal ESL-tutoring experience in the process) and peer academic advisor and enjoyed that work very much.
Now, on the other hand, my initial plan was to do school part-time and find a full-time job in NYC, but since my family hasn't relocated to the NYC metro area, yet, all the FT jobs I applied to turned me down (presumably for local candidates). Recently, I happened upon my dream job (for this stage of my career and my current skill set), which is a FT position in the study abroad field at NYU and I am planning to apply to it. If I get my dream job, I am going to take it, and I will switch back to PT school (I got a PT scholarship, as well, so that option comes with some funding).
I've been doing research on TEFL cert programs and had decided on the TEFL Hero given the modest price tag, but I wanted to look into reviews for the program before committing. As I look through reviews, I'm seeing lots of mentions of folks having missed the boat for online ESL teaching within the context of opportunities having largely dried up from China as the primary job market. I would be open to teaching in-person in NYC if those opportunities are more abundant, but I am curious if the jobs offered/companies offering these jobs are legitimate. I do not want to invest money and time into this endeavor if I will not get a job that helps with my family's expenses (we also have a toddler) while we're living in the NYC metro-area for at least the next year, but possibly up to 3 years.
For added context, my spouse is planning to work FT and go to grad school PT. I am also aware of various opportunities that would help us subsidize childcare, so there may be relief there.
TLDR; If I am not offered my FT dream job and have to stick with attending NYU FT/working PT, can I meaningfully contribute to my family's living expenses by teaching English PT with a TEFL cert or should I move on and look for other PT job opportunities that pay more?

2023.06.08 23:25 Willing-Courage4755 Just graduated from college, need advice on what to do next

I have been directionless with my career path my entire life. When I was younger, I jumped around careers just to be optimistic but when I got into high school, I realized I had no passions, no goals when it came to my career, no direction. I had no idea what I wanted to do from when I was 15 and it’s been almost 6 years and I still don’t.
I graduated from college literally two weeks ago with a degree in Psychology. I hated psychology. I chose this degree out of convenience, because my prior major was sociology and I realized I can’t do anything with a sociology degree, so I switched to psych (My favorite classes during my 3 years of college were Intro to Human Rights, Neuroscience, and Behavioral Neuroendocrinology). I graduated a year early at 20 and here’s my predicament
I thought that since I had no idea what I wanted to do, I would try to break into tech and try my hand at comp sci. I applied for NYU Tandon bridge in STEM, a 6 month course of computer science that started august 5th. It costs $1800 and I heard (from reddit) that it was extremely difficult and which each exam, more and more people drop out, and that the people who tend to take this program already know about coding and comp sci and practically compete for the highest grade for admission into the masters program at NYU. I have absolutely no STEM experience. I am a very applied person so there is no doubt I wouldn’t study very hard, but for this reason i’ve been extremely terrified of doing this program.
Here’s where I need advice. Remember when I said the program starts august fifth? WELL, I just got an email saying it starts JULY FIFTH. As in next month. This caught me extremely off guard as I thought I would have two months to prepare, and now I only have one month. Honestly, my doubts about doing well skyrocketed even more and I don’t know what to do. I haven’t paid for the program yet, and i’m debating on whether I should even do it. I am so stressed out about my future and my career and I have no idea where I am going to end up. If I don’t do this program, I would essentially end up taking a gap semesteyear since I didn’t apply for any graduate programs. I don’t know what to do.
Do I pay for the program and try to prepare only one month in advance for something I have a lot of doubts with, or do I take a gap semester (potentially a year) and just try to figure it the fuck out? I am so lost, I really need advice
To add: Since I thought it started in august, I booked a two week trip in july to go to Lebanon with my family. The tickets were expensive and I don’t think I can get a refund, and I would also have to attend lectures and study while i’m supposed to be on vacation with my family
Also: I do want to pursue a masters/ higher education. I just have no idea in what
TLDR: I found out a program I was supposed to do is sooner than I thought and I don’t know if I should do it anymore

2023.06.08 15:44 Edible-Pokemon NYU vs. Brown: Seeking Advice for a Future in the Entertainment Industry

Hi Everyone! I'm at a crossroads with a big decision and I'm hoping to get some insight from this community. I've been accepted to both NYU Tisch and Brown University, with the goal to carve out a career in the marketing and operations side of a film studio. - At NYU, I'd have a chance to earn a joint degree in Film Production from the Tisch School of Arts and Business from the Stern School of Business. This program seems tailored to my interest in arts and business, with courses specifically on the economics, marketing, and distribution of the entertainment industry.
- On the other hand, Brown offers a renowned liberal arts program where I could explore concentrations in economics and media, or cross register at RISD. Although being an Ivy League school, Brown could open doors across various industries, I have some doubts about its specific influence in the entertainment field. I'm not sure it would offer the same opportunities to thrive in the entertainment industry as the NYU's joint degree might. Based on what I've heard, I understood that hands-on experience often carries more weight than the degree itself in the entertainment industry. Thus, the advantage of the Tisch-Stern program, as I perceive it, lies in its potential to facilitate early college internships and subsequently help me forge stronger professional networks. However, I'm curious as to whether attending Brown could potentially put me at a disadvantage when it comes to presenting my resume and navigating the interview process Also, do you think the Tisch-Stern joint degree offers any long-term advantages apart from aiding in the initial job placement? Are there any hidden benefits I might be overlooking? I appreciate any insights or advice you can share. Thanks in advance!

My parents are not entirely satisfied with NYUAD because they had different career plans for me. I think that coming to nyu is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and that they'll eventually be happy after they see me do well. But this is just what I think and I want you to give me an honest review of the university. What are your plans after undergad? And do students easily secure seats in ivies for their masters?

2023.06.06 23:25 Turbulent_Hornet_802 Got in to NYU CAS but i need some advice

Hi guys! I just got into NYU CAS and I am having trouble deciding on whether to go... after all, it is an expensive school and I did not receive any aid. I am currently studying econ at UCSD and I am interested in going into business consulting and management. I heard a lot of people saying that NYU is not worth it if it is not stern.. and I am worried that if I transfer I won't get much in return payscale-wise..

Any advice will be appreciated. Is NYU really worth it for economics? I know UCSD is not a target school for a career in the business sector. I really appreciate this community, it really supported me throughout the transfer process.

2023.06.06 02:27 Skeetabird Tax LLM Admissions/Career Question

So some background on myself. Currently a rising 3L in top 25% of my class at while not a top law school it is a flagship school in my home state of Louisiana . Had a 3.2 in Tax 1 and a 3.5 in tax 2. I have an interest in doing transactional work. I worked at a tax law firm during my 2L year and enjoyed it for the most part. Currently clerking at two firms over the summer that aren’t tax related but offer over 6 figures or close to 6 figures but no firm offer from this yet
First question for current/ recent grads: What are the odds of getting into a tax LLM program like GT, NW, NYU, or UF? What are scholarship options like? Do the programs do a good job helping you find a careejob?
Second question for graduates: What were the career options like? Did you find the cost worth it in terms of compensation?
Thanks in advance

2023.06.05 03:23 ConstructionIcy3674 Reverse Chance Me Pre-Med T-30 & BS/MDs

I’m a rural NE student who goes to a really small charter school, looking to a future in medicine. I’ll include some basic stats and extracurriculars. My biggest worry is that there is just not enough to my profile, even though I’ve pretty much maxed out everything my school has to offer. I know schools generally look at what you’ve done in the context of what is available to you, but I’m still worried…
GPA: 4.27 UW (we use 4.0 scale but my grade system is different and doesn’t calculate weighted)
SAT: (taking in August)
Notable Classes:
-“Advanced” Spanish (similar to AP level, my school doesn’t offer AP courses except through dual-enrollment which I’ll get to later, junior and senior year)
-Applied Calc. at local community college (via dual-enrollment, in junior year)
-Infectious Diseases, Pandemics, and Social Justice (via Harvard Summer School, between junior and senior year)
-AP Bio, AP Calc. AB, AP US Gov. (all via dual enrollment, in senior year)
The dual enrollment situation at my high school: At my school, we can replace one class during our junior year with either a VHS (virtual high school) class or a class at a local community college. VHS offers AP classes, which are the only way to take APs at my school. During senior year, we can replace up to three classes via the same process. So although I’ve only taken one college class (aside from Harvard Summer School) and 3 APs, this was the max that I could do within the context of what my school offers.
Extracurriculars:
-Dartmouth bound participant
-Co-captain of varsity cross country team sophomore and junior year, captain senior year
-Co-captain of intramural cross country team junior year, captain senior year
-Social media manager of varsity cross country team Instagram, junior and senior year
-Sprit captain of varsity ultimate frisbee team junior year, captain senior year
-Social media manager of varsity ultimate frisbee team, senior year
-Hired my head of school, as well as 11th & 12th grade science teacher (working with hiring committee & board of trustees)
-Student representative on board of trustees, senior year (first time my school has done this)
-Student council all of high school
-Contributor to school newspaper all of high school
-Member of student-run racial and social justice group since it’s inception in my freshman year, helped fundraiser over 1K for voting access nonprofit in 2020, helped paint murals on campus honoring Black excellence at my school
-Received “Peacemaker” award from local/county organization, given certificate, cash prize, and state gov. citations from both senate and house of reps. in recognition of award, featured in local newspaper for it
-Week-long internship at local hospital in surgery junior year
-Student ambassador at local hospital between junior and senior year, 35+ volunteer hours from this alone
-Founding member of local, student run social justice group
-Founding member of peer-tutoring program at my school
Other info:
-High honor roll all of high school, high honors in every class, all semesters
-“HOWLs of Fame” (Habits of Work and Learning) award given by school, every semester of high school
Schools I’m applying to:
-All eight ivies (plus Brown PLME, this is my dream school/program)
-Four CA schools (UCLA, UC Berkeley, USC, Stanford)
-Northeastern
-Northwestern
-UChicago
-Johns Hopkins
-BU
-NYU
-Carnegie
-Duke
-Vanderbilt
-GWU BS/MD program, Yeshiva/Einstein BS/MD program
I KNOW these are all reallyyyyyy difficult schools to get into (save Yeshiva and GWU, which are 50%-60%), but what are your thoughts on this list? Any higher chances than others? Any other school recommendations, or predictions?
One last thing to note: my BS/MD program essays focus on my experiences with surgery as a child, mainly palate repair (Pierre Robin’s Sequence), as well as a traumatic episode of appendicitis and a burst appendix in my sophomore year in which I nearly died, and how these experiences made me want to pursue a career in medicine. Also noting that I received high honors in all of my classes that semester, and that is also when I received my “Peacemaker” social justice award, after and despite missing over a month of school, going through a tough breakup, and having a literal s ho fire that forced us to relocate to the aforementioned community college for the remainder of the school year.
Thanks for reading and sharing thoughts!

New Eye Surgery Holds Promise for Correcting Nearsightedness
The SMILE eye procedure is similar to LASIK in being less invasive, says one doctor.

Cleveland resident Tina Noel struggled with glasses and contacts for most of her life. The 44-year-old has been living a blurry and cloudy life as her aging eyes have progressively become drier due to an autoimmune condition.
“I’m very limited to what I can wear anymore,” says Noel. “I can't wear my contacts anymore because my eyes are just progressively getting drier. I feel my eyes get so tired, I can be driving and my eyes just want to shut when I'm wearing my glasses.”

Lasik Alternative Approved by the FDA
The Food and Drug Administration in September approved a new laser eye procedure known as Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, or SMILE. Noel's doctor recommended giving it a try.
The procedure employs a laser, similar to the one used in LASIK, to remove a small piece of the cornea to reshape the eye. Many people with corneal changes that excluded them from LASIK could now be eligible for this new surgical option.
Noel's ophthalmologist, Dr. Ronald Krueger of the Cleveland Clinic, said the SMILE procedure is all about being minimally invasive.
“I often say that SMILE is like a laparoscopic LASIK because it’s making a smaller incision,” Krueger told NBC News.
The new laser procedure is designed to treat nearsightedness in patients aged 22 and older. The price tag is roughly $5,000 and is not covered by insurance.
Dr. Ilyse Haberman, assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center, says that, outside of the U.S., SMILE can correct astigmatism and is being further developed to fix farsightedness. But for patients in the U.S., only very specific candidates can get the SMILE procedur

2023.06.03 21:50 Applicant2026 USC vs NYU

This past week, my transfer cycle finally came to a close, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Despite my pretty horrendous HS GPA (3.3UW), I managed to get into WashU, NYU, and USC.
I am having an incredibly difficult time choosing between NYU and USC (I like WashU a lot, and it definitely has its perks, but idk how I'd feel about spending the next three years of my life in St. Louis). I'm hoping that with the advice of this sub (and a few other college subs on Reddit) I can finally put down my deposit by the end of the week and start planning for my new college life. Listed below are my feelings regarding both colleges. From this stream of consciousness, please lmk which college you think would be a better fit for me, and which college you would choose were you in my position. Thanks in advance for your help.
NYU
I really, really like New York City. If you'd asked me three years ago what my top school was, I would tell you NYU. I love the culture and the vibe of the city and I particularly love Greenwich Village. I appreciate how many opportunities there are in New York, both in terms of my career and personal life, and I feel like I'd never really get bored in the city. I also feel like socially, I'd probably have an easier time adjusting to NYU and its open campus as I'm transferring in from a similar city school. All this said, there are a few things that I'm a little hesitant about.
  1. I'm in CAS Econ and I feel like it'll be overshadowed by Stern when it comes to finding internships at IB's and consulting firms. Additionally, I'm nervous that I wont be offered the same resources and tools as Stern students and I'll be at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to networking.
  2. I plan to go into big law and I feel like I'm going to be living in New York at one point or another in my career. I really don't want to spend too much of my life in one city, and I want to explore whenever possible. If I stick with NYU now, I fear that I'll stay in New York for law school and remain there for my career.
  3. CAS' economics program is pretty basic. I'm interested in Impact finance and consulting but unfortunately those areas of study are reserved for Stern students.
  4. No school spirit/ community. Though I enjoyed my time at my previous city school, I often felt isolated and lonely due to the lack of a proper community on campus. Sure there were clubs I could join to meet new people but I felt like I couldn't really connect with the other people there. I'm worried that I'll feel the same way at NYU. Also got mad seasonal depression at my previous school during winter.
USC
Really didn't think too much about USC until early this January. It quickly became my second-choice school after NYU as I began to research the programs and orgs on campus. I've never been to LA and I'd be so down to try something new even if I don't think it could match New York in terms of atmosphere. As a huge movie guy, I feel like I'd get a kick out of living in LA and immersing myself in the culture there. I think USC has more interesting programs in terms of what I want to do and it allows me to be more flexible with my major. I've also heard that USC has a stronger alumni network compared to NYU, and the smaller class sizes will allow me to have a more personalized connection with my professors. Naturally though, there are a few apprehensions that are stopping me from committing:
  1. Prevalence of Greek life on campus. I'd be down to rush but idk how much I'd like it. Greek life at my previous school was pretty ass so it's left a bad impression about frats in my mind. Idk how good or bad the frats at USC are, and I don't want to feel like I'm missing out if I decide not to pledge.
  2. NYC > LA. LA is not walkable at all, and idk how good the public transportation systems are. Also feel like maybe New York has more to do than LA but I could be wrong about that. NYU is also in a really nice part of Manhattan whereas USC (from what I've heard) is in a really shitty part of LA.
  3. NYU is more prestigious internationally.
  4. Not huge into football. Not sure how prevalent it is on campus, but I don't want to feel like I'm missing out if I'm not super invested in it.

2023.06.03 21:13 Applicant2026 USC vs NYU

This past week, my transfer cycle finally came to a close, and I'm pretty happy with the results. Despite my pretty horrendous HS GPA (3.3UW), I managed to get into WashU, NYU, and USC. I'd like to thank everyone on this sub for providing me with incredibly useful advice on how to craft my application because without your guidance, I really don't think I would've performed as well as I did. So thank you.

2023.06.03 18:54 Pomme-M NYU Langone Health researchers publish study revealing discovery of what drives Psoriasis severity, offering clues to how it spreads across body

“Led by researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, the study mapped hidden features of inflammation and how they compared in cases of increasing severity of psoriatic disease. The team's findings may help explain how small areas of skin inflammation can have wide-ranging effects in other parts of the body. Up to one-fifth of those with the skin disease, the researchers note, go on to develop inflammation in the joints, or psoriatic arthritis. The study results, they say, may also offer clues as to why psoriasis can trigger this and other conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and inflammatory bowel disease.
Publishing in the journal Science Immunology online June 2, the new analyses revealed that the location of clusters of cells called fibroblasts, key regulators of inflammation, along with macrophages, a type of white blood cell, varied and were more common in upper layers of the skin in more severe cases of psoriasis.
Further, the research team found that in skin samples from patients with moderate-to-severe psoriatic disease, gene activity increased in more than three dozen molecular pathways tied to metabolism and control of lipid levels, factors known to go awry in diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This increased gene activity even occurred in clear skin far away from any lesions.
"Our initial goal was to find measurable molecular signals that could tell us who is more likely to develop severe psoriasis, as well as who is at higher risk of developing related disorders that often accompany psoriasis, such as arthritis and cardiovascular disease," said study co-senior investigator Jose Scher, MD.
"Having found signals with potential systemic consequences, we are now working to understand how skin inflammation can lead to widespread disease affecting other organs," said Scher, the Steere Abramson Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at NYU Langone Health, where he also serves as director of its Psoriatic Arthritis Center, and the Judith and Stewart Colton Center for Autoimmunity.
"Our study serves as a valuable resource for the scientific community, offering the most comprehensive archive of cellular and molecular features involved in both diseased and healthy skin," added study co-senior investigator Shruti Naik, PhD. Naik is an assistant professor in the departments of Pathology, Medicine, and the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Dermatology at NYU Langone.
More than 8 million Americans, and 125 million people worldwide, are estimated to have psoriatic disease. The condition affects men and women equally.
Scher notes that the new study was designed to go beyond current diagnostic tools that focus heavily on visible signs of skin lesions instead of looking at their invisible systemic and molecular effects. While many available therapies, including steroids and immunosuppressive drugs, reduce inflammation and symptoms, they do not address the underlying causes of the disease.
The new study relied on spatial transcriptomics, a technique that carefully charts the molecular and cellular interactions occurring in a specific tissue. Researchers analyzed intact skin samples from 11 men and women with mild to severe cases of psoriatic disease, plus three healthy adults without psoriasis. Spatial transcriptomics, they say, is more powerful than other commonly used techniques that track single cells because it creates a broad image-based map of where cells are located in tissues and what other cells with which they are communicating.
Naik says the team next plans to use their latest analysis to identify the biological mechanisms involved in skin inflammation in one area and how it affects skin or other organs in another part of the body. Further research is also planned in larger groups of patients and in lesioned and nonlesioned skin from the same patients to determine how disease clears on its own in some and why patients respond differently to the same anti-inflammatory medications.”
For the benefit of researchers worldwide, study co-lead investigator and bioinformatician Ikjot Sidhu has archived its spatial transcriptomics analysis online at https://zenodo.org/record/7813973 and https://zenodo/org/record/7562864 .
