We as a community are standing in solidarity with the third-party apps, as many of us have been using reddit through those apps on mobile since many years. We will be making IndiaFood private for 48 Hrs from 12th June 2023, which will make the sub inaccessible to all users.

Why are we doing this?

• Reddit recently announced their new API pricing and changes, which will be effective from 1st July 2023. More details broken down by Apollo Dev can be found here.
• These changes will be a huge problem, rendering it increasingly unaffordable for third-party app developers like RIF, Boost, Apollo, Sync, Narwhal, Bacon Reader, etc. to continue their services due to not being feasible monetarily.
• Reddit Official App is also not compatible with accessibility for blind people, which third-party apps do.
• Thus, if third-party apps are gone, blind people will not be able to use Reddit on Official App. The Blind community moderation team is left in jeopardy.
• Reddit is also taking away the ability for these third-party apps to run ads on their apps, which can generate revenue for them and keeping their apps free of charge. Apart from this, Reddit is going to cut-off access to NSFW for all 3rd party apps from 1st July.
• The API changes will also affect a lot of Automated bots, which we have been using on Reddit both by Moderators and Users frequently.

What are the expectations from Reddit?

1. Lower the price of API calls to a level that doesn't kill Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, Bacon Reader, and similar third-party apps.
2. Communicate on a more open and timely basis about changes to Reddit which will affect large numbers of moderators and users.
3. To allow mods to continue keeping Reddit safe for all users, NSFW subreddit data must remain available through the API.

Where before this was free, enabling third-party developers to create their own applications with unique features, Reddit is now set to charge what many are labeling as extremely high fees for access to the API. A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader to Boost.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface. This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do?
1. Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat.
3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.
How does this impact this subreddit?
Reddit's prohibitively expensive API access costs will prevent easy access to content that a lot of you come to this subreddit for, as well as making our job as internet janitors more difficult, which will result in more off-topic and low quality posts clogging up /new and abusive or spam messages staying visible longer. Ultimately, Reddit's announced change will negatively impact this subreddit regardless of how you interact with it, so we encourage you to participate in the protest if you moderate any subreddits, and get loud about it with the suggestions above.

Hi all! So I'm planning 3 vacations this year. South of France first week of July. North Idaho last week of July to visit my grandpa, and the Alabama/Mississippi gulf coast first week of September.
I'm from New Jersey but currently live in Philadelphia and commute to NJ for work because of NJ vs PA gun laws. Reason I'm visiting the area is because it appeals to me. I work in trucking and the first time I ever drove through Mobile and the I-10 corridor was when I had to go to Baton Rouge to do a repo. I remember thinking "this place looks cool, it's 60 degrees in February, and I could totally live here". So I'm coming down to spend a week to see if it's actually viable or not. I love the beach, I love swimming, I love guns, and so I figured I'd give it a shot. I am 33 and I have no kids, no wife, no real family.
My only 2 concerns are the job market and the airport. In looking at Alabama and Mississippi I saw that MS seems to have nothing, period, unless you want to drive OTR, and Birmingham and Montgomery are the real employment centers of AL. Aside from what I see on Indeed, is there a good amount of truck repair or truck driving work in the area? Or similar work that would tie into that? Where are there industrial parks I could drive around and potentially talk to people?

I know things are still in flux, and this may be jumping the gun, but I just wanted to throw it out there... Reddit alternatives/successors are a hot topic right now, and it seems like lots of support is coalescing around federated platforms based on the ActivityPub standard. These platforms (Kbin, Lemmy, etc) are exciting and have lots of potential, but they lack mobile apps.
For what it's worth, I (and I'm sure many others) would wholeheartedly support Boost if it were eventually converted to work on the fediverse with something like Kbin. Cheers!
