I figured this would be the best place to go with this question. I recently had a hard drive quit on me that contained a lot of RAW photo and video files from my past few years of photography that I didn’t have backed up to a reliable source (trust me, I know to do better from here on out and I’ve got a Synology that I’m setting up this week in conjunction with Amazon photos).
I sent the hard drive to a company in Texas called ACE Data Recovery because they gave free estimates if you sent your HDD in and they quoted between 300-1900 before I sent it in.
They just got back to me that it will be $2226 to get my data back. They quoted the source of failure as “The test results for your failed hard drive are in and have shown that the Head Rack Assembly is the failure mechanism. The Head Rack Assembly (HRA) is the device inside the drive cavity that supports the read/write heads; there is one head per surface. Attached to the back end of the assembly is a voice coil positioned between two magnets…”
I wanted to ask if that is an expected or reasonable price for this sort of repair. I know that there are national brands that are reputable but I don’t know if they will be any cheaper. I was hoping to get it done for a little under $1000 if possible. I can get the HDD back from ACE for around $25 so I’m considering that.
This may also just be a dumb idea but I’d figured I’d ask. Is it unrealistic to think to try this sort of repair on my own if I could order the part online?

As the moderation team of Beastars, we have concerns about recent changes to Reddit.
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. The scale pricing for the API: $12,000 for 50 million API request. Apollo made 7 billion requests last month, which would put it at about 1.7 million dollars per month, or 20 million US dollars per year. Lots of big numbers, but for sheer cost comparison’s sake it is “only” $166 per month for the same number of requests from Imgur.
Effectively it means that Reddit is shutting down all third-party apps.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.
This isn't only a problem for users: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
In response, over 3,000 subreddits have organized a protest to make it clear to reddit that their blatant attempts to prop up their half-baked, insufficient mobile app by killing off the competition will not go unchallenged. What began with an open letter has progressed to a full on blackout of all participating subreddits after reddit demonstrated they were not interested in addressing our concerns with any meaningful action.
We learned that the API pricing changes would also have a profound impact on users who rely on the accessibility features found in third party apps that are severely lacking or missing entirely in the official reddit app. You can find more information about the impact in this thread from the /Blind subreddit.
On June 7th, reddit CEO Steve Huffman (spez) and several other reddit admins held a closed call with a select group of moderators to discuss the upcoming changes to the API pricing model. You can find the moderator's notes of this call over on /ModCoord. Reddit also provided their own notes of the call which you can see stickied in the comments of the same thread. (Reddit's notes were originally posted in PartnerCommunities which is a private subreddit for admins and mods to interact. Reddit gave permission for these notes to be shared publicly.)
There are a few takeaways from the call worth mentioning. Reddit did make a concession in exempting moderation tools/bots from the API changes. They have also promised to close the accessiblity gap in their own app, but provided no tangible examples or timelines as to how or when that might happen. Otherwise, they show absolutely no interest in budging on the ridiculous pricing scheme and seem content to watch every major third party application shut down.
There's another claim in the notes that bares further inspection: reddit claims that the lead developer of Apollo attempted to extort them for $10 million.
Yesterday, June 8th, the lead developer of Apollo posted an announcement confirming that the app would shut down. He also provided the receipts of his call with reddit, completely debunking the extortion claim. I strongly recommend reading the entire post for full context, but we'll link both the transcript and the audio directly for easy access. You can see that despite reddit apologizing multiple times for the apparent misunderstanding on the call, they still went ahead and posted their notes afterwards claiming he had "threatened" them. This is a deliberate act of deception designed to slander the developer and drive a wedge between users and third party developers.
So that brings us to now.
Today, June 9th, spez is holding an AMA to discuss the API. No time has been specified, but we encourage anybody with questions or concerns about the impending death of third party apps to participate. Might need to bring your own popcorn.

Content warnings: So far the story is not spicy but I do intend to take it there. I am 22 and the characters are around 20 so I am looking for older readers, not minors. There is also some LGBTQ+ rep so bigots stay away!
Disclaimer the first chapter is only one of the main characters, but I do have to say, once they meet there is some wonderful witty banter so I swear it gets more intriguing.

Osgar Nieva was a well-respected war lieutenant during the Great Slaughtering. He never let me forget that I had a legacy to uphold. I knew my father hated me. I figured his disappointment began from the moment I received my name. In Dolag, tradition dictates that the father names their son. Names were believed to be prophetic. Osgar had a strong name-befitting of a warrior. His name meant “divine spear.” My grandfather claimed he could sense that Osgar would be a brave warrior from the moment he was born. So he was prophesied to be graced by the luck of God in battles. Typically, women were only allowed to name the baby if it was a girl. I was the exception. The process of my birth brought my Mother to her deathbed. The doctor was certain that she wouldn’t recover. As she lovingly admired the newborn baby boy in her arms, her attention was drawn by a bird pecking gently on the window. Tears streamed out of her eyes as it took off soundlessly into the winter dawn. “Wren.” She’d muttered softly, still gazing peacefully out the window. The room of family members and midwives stood in puzzled silence. The world seemed to pause in wait for her next words. She turned her head back to meet Osgar’s eyes. “He shall be named Wren. He will be gentle. Beautiful. Free.” She reached down to caress her baby’s face. “And he will be loved.” Despite my Father’s protests, the council voted to accept the name. Safely out of his eyeline, she directed one last mocking tongue in my direction before slinking away. “Are you ready to go?” He raked his disapproving gaze over my gear, searching for any flaw he could call attention to. “Yes, sir.” I responded. I did feel ready. This was the moment I had been preparing for my whole life. My body was honed by years of workouts and my skills were unquestioned. I had graduated top of my class in my training group. I was certainly ready to leave the house, as I wanted nothing more than independence. Besides my Mother and sister, I had nothing keeping me here. Not anymore. So I grabbed my bag and walked out the door. When my family was all ready, we began the walk to the edge of town where the sendoff was taking place. There we would eat, drink, dance and say our goodbyes. I spent my time standing on the outskirts of the group, hoping my stern face would signal everyone to leave me alone. I didn’t have any desire to get my ego fluffed by a bunch of people who just wanted to get in the good graces of my Father. I just wanted to leave. After a few hours of festivities, it was time for us to set off. I was ready to say my goodbyes. I knelt down so El could wrap her arms around my neck. Her hot tears dampened the fabric covering my shoulders. “Promise me you will come back,” she said. I squeezed her a little tighter. “Don’t worry, you’ll get a few months of the stench free, scrambled-egg-filled, only-child experience and then I will be right back to boss you around.” El released me from her grip in order to look me in the eyes. “I’m not kidding around Bear.” Her piercing gaze mirrored the intensity of her voice. “Promise me.” Even though I knew it wasn’t something I could realistically guarantee, I hugged her once more and said “I promise, Elly.” After a moment, I stood up and ruffled my little sister’s hair. Then I turned to my Mother, who watched with watery eyes. The hair that had escaped from her tight bun was wisping around her face in the gentle breeze. The sun shining behind her produced an effect reminiscent of a halo. She embraced me with a level of care only a Mother could deliver. “I love you, Wren. You will always be my darling songbird,” she whispered into my ear. I released myself from the hug, and smiled one last time at my adoring Mother. I nodded once before forcing myself to turn to my Father. “Don’t disappoint me, son.” He stuck out his calloused hand and I shook it begrudgingly. It felt like cold leather in my grip. That was it. That was my final farewell from my Father. ‘Don’t disappoint’. No good luck, no I love you, nothing of the sort. Only a damn handshake. I knew I shouldn’t have expected anything different, but it still put me in a sour mood. What a great start to my expedition. I looked one last time at my sister and Mother in an effort to preserve some positive thoughts about my home. When I cemented this image in my mind, I omitted the withering glare of my Father beside them. I spun around and started down the path towards Deirtalamh. I marched towards witch country without so much as a glance over my shoulder. I was days into my trek when I came across the cabin. Being the son of Osgar Nieva gave me claim to the most promising Hunt. My journey was actually mapped to this location, whereas the rest of my group had to resort to aimless meandering. I heard the gentle melody of a person humming drifting out from within the house. How odd. My superiors swore it was a witch that lived here. A hunter from a few years prior reported catching a glimpse of a cabin before he was suddenly lost in the woods. Who could be humming so pleasantly within this peaceful home so deep into witch territory? I maneuvered my head to look through the open window and saw the source of the cheerful noise. She appeared like the sun incarnate. Her dark skin contrasted beautifully against the pale yellow of her clothes. Her hair curled unbound around her face. She stirred a pot of stew as she swayed softly to her own music, the fabric of her dress swishing mesmerizingly around her thighs. Beautiful suddenly seemed like an insufficient word to describe someone of her standing. I knew she was not the witch I had come to hunt. Of course I was no fool, I was aware that witches could glamor themselves to be beautiful. But their false beauty was always like that of a succubus, unnatural and deadly. No witch would have been able to conjure up the effortless and soft beauty of the woman in front of me. I was sure of it. Never mind the fact that if she were a witch, I would most certainly be dead. She would have sensed me coming from the moment I stepped foot onto her land, and she would have been ready to strike. If I had let myself get distracted for this long in the presence of a witch, I would have paid for my mistake in blood. I wondered how she had come to live in Deirtalamh. I’d heard tales of villagers who’d tried their luck here out of desperation, choosing to brave the dangers of witch territory rather than living in the impoverished slums of Dolag.  | A couple weeks ago, I decided I was going to grow a handful of shit. Dug out a garden, fenced it, the whole nine yards. Problem is, I didn’t expect it to work. Well, pretty much all of the seeds germinated and started growing- and I immediately fell in love. Problem is, I’m pretty sure I did everything wrong. submitted by According-Flight-857 to vegetablegardening [link] [comments] The quick rundown, I’ve got spaghetti squash in the back row, the bottom left corner and bottom middle section are both two types of carrots. The right side is jalapeños, and the bottom right is a tomato plant. As for the plants in the top left, top right, and bottom right, I bought all pre-grown and put them into the soil. They are, in order from left-right, Yellow squash (I think), Jalapeño, and tomato. Now, ensue the many questions I have: So, the back row is spaghetti squash. I threw a couple seeds in each hole on the row. As you can see by the gap in the row, one group was sacrificed to the squirrels. They’ve all sprouted and been growing. I’m assuming I should thin them, or like should I put a stake in the ground for them? I’m eventually going to put netting on the top of the garden to prevent deer from eating them, soo. Did I give them enough space? Many questions, few answers. As a side note, the plant in the top left is a yellow squash I think. I bought it pre-grown and just put it in a few weeks ago. Just flowered this morning! I’ve already shown all my friends. They don’t seem to get the hype. Onto The jalapeños and carrots, which I believe have the same issue. The seeds are small for both plants, so I just threw a handful in, spaced about 2 ish inches apart, and covered them. Problematically, they have all sprouted at once. So there’s like 10 sprouts per hole. I’m assuming I need to make it one? I’m most worried about the carrots, as they are VERY crowded. Though both plants seem to be growing fine. Last but certainly not least, the tomato. I’m not sure if he’s healthy or not- I’m not sure if I should tie him to the stake I have (I’ve seen others do it). So, yeah. Lots of problems. I also planted like 6 rows of corn (10ft long each) in the backyard. They’ve all sprouted and are doing good, I think. I’m going to build a big ol fence around them as an anti-deer system. I’ve read read that I’ll probably have to hand-pollinate them or something due to the small size of the patch. Will have to read up more on that. Any advice, tips, literally anything would be GREATLY appreciated. Even ideas for more things to plant! as a note, I live in the mid-east coast. |

When Roman Legions went about crucifying entire populations. We know they did not literally crucify everyone. Most were enslaved, or murdered on the spot. In Carthage there were 50,000 Roman troops, there was a population of 700,000, and 450,000 were killed. If say 200,000 of that 450,000 were crucified. That would be 5 people per soldier. Accounting for Roman losses, based on estimations let's say 40,000 survived and were still able-bodied, that's now 6.25 people per soldier. Crosses needed to be built and set up. Romans also had a large civilian and slave support force. I just need to know, how long did it take for the Romans to crucify all 250,000 people and how much wood did they use.

Hello my name is Olive (name changed) I'm 31/F from Australia. I am personal house keeper for a well respected doctor and her family and I work 5 days a week. I have been doing this job for about 4 months and always try my best to be kind, friendly, helpful and try my hardest at my job. I look after their dog whilst I'm there, plus house work, letting trades people etc in and continuously pick up and tidy up after her two sons 19 and 21. A few days ago at work while I was on the top level of the house, whilst changing the linens on the bed in the master bedroom I looked out the verandah to see 2 puppies who has escaped their yard and where running willy nilly around in a bushy area next to the river that backs onto the properties, one adult and one young puppy. I panicked as I was very scared they would slip into the river and drown. I ran down the two internal flights of stairs and down 3 more flights of stairs to get to the rivers edge (which is incredibly hard as I am not the smallest woman, quite challenged in the fitness department, with breathing problems, imagine if you will a plump potato with little legs that sounds like a snoring pug while running down three sets of steps made of lose pebbles and wood... not pretty) I hauled ass down there to find I needed to scale a fence and walk through the mud to get to this little pupper and you bet I got him, he was cold, muddy and miserable. I took my jumper off and wrapped him up and carried him back through the mud, over the fence and back up the stairs to the house. One of the boys youngest we will call him A 19/m happened to come outside as I walked into the courtyard head to toe in mud and carrying a shivering dog. Yes I can say he did assist me in getting towels and food for the pup and put a photo of him up in social media to help track down his owner. I had to sit in a jumper which I had to ask numerous for numerous times, that was three times to small and a towel so I could wash my clothes, I bathed, cuddled and comforted this scared lost little soul, until his Dad came to collect him. All within 1.5 hours of the rescue, which was an awesome win! His owner was absolutely frantic and so grateful that his baby was safe and sound, we came to learn he was only just 4 months old. Here's where I'm unsure what to do, after all the antics I finally washed and dried my clothes and got dressed, finished my jobs for the day and went home. After I left the fellow dropped by a lovely bottle of wine as a thank you gift which is so kind of him. However, I wasn't there so I did not recieve it, nor did either of the sons whome where the only people there at the time as my boss and her husband are out of the country, actually tell me anything about it. Although while at work today I did clean up while classes, and remnants of the left overs of the wine. I feel really really hurt that I wasn't even told about it nor was I given a gift that was destined for me. It is a personal choice that I don't drink alcohol, but I would have really enjoyed having a glass as a cheers to the little furry dude who plopped into my life for an hour or so. WIBTA if I messaged my boss to let her know her sons basically stole my thank you gift?? Thanks in advance (sorry it was so long winded)

The older dog took off when I called out and was able to make its way home whereas the younger dog was down further on the side of the incline and unable to make its way up to where it's canine companion was. I would have gone after both if I was physically able but unfortunately I couldn't I'm just glad everyone was safe.

So, point 1 - it takes a significant amount of time to make planks at the early game and by the time I have reasonable material production, I'm building species-specific housing, so the cost doesn't even matter. As for the actual wood cost, while it is cheaper overall, a one-time cost of 15 wood has never been a concern. And, more importantly, I have saved more than one run by breaking down Small Shelters to get wood to sacrifice, something that would be impossible with buildings that use another material.
Point 2 - I have never had an issue of running out of space. Not even close. Even my No Glade run had plenty - which I was expecting to be one of the bigger problems.
I have not built a single Big Shelter throughout any of my runs.
Am I missing out on something?
Oh, and it also scales worse with the "more residents per house" perks (I don't think those perks really do anything of value and even if they did I'll never take them again, since they make it really annoying to assign the correct number of villagers to proc Hearth upgrade thresholds)

- Big Shelter takes up less space 2x3 vs 2x4
