Synopsis:

In the realms of Skysea, where destinies are moulded by the pantheon, one young man defies the established order.
Denied Aether on his Adulthood ceremony, Zaire was dragged by cruel whims of fate to somehow awaken Emerald Aether, setting him on the path of a Mage.
But his awakening hardly had anything to do with the pantheon. Deeper secrets reside within him and in the System. Why was he exiled to the backwater village? What did those recurring nightmares and visions entail? And what's with the cursed dagger?
Zaire will search for the answers to them all, but before that, he must master his power. Great evil lurks near his village.

Chapter 01: Faithless

Carmel Village, Spring, 3617 years of the System
As the morning of System Inauguration Day dawned, countless individuals awakened with hopes and dreams for what the future held for them. Sadly, Zaire was of a completely different sentiment.
He had risen before the break of dawn, and went through all the rigorous training his mother demanded, and now, found himself on the receiving end of her ruthless thrashing in the spar.
"Move with purpose," Ella barked, her blade poised for the next strike. "I didn't teach you to be sloppy."
His limbs ached from all the exhaustive exercises, leaving him far from his peak during their spar. Not that it would have made a difference—Ella was in a particularly foul mood this morning.
Gritting his teeth, Zaire shifted into a defensive stance, though he didn’t see its purpose with Ella being... Ella. With narrowed eyes, he observed her approach. Despite her tall and heavy stature, she was light on her feet. Her training rod, held high, swung mercilessly towards Zaire in a threatening arc. He managed to block the first strike, but struggled to parry the following ones, barely delaying her advances.
There was no room for him to push forward. Zaire found himself constantly on the defensive, forced to withdraw under the unrelenting onslaught. Each contact between their weapons sent electric spasms through his arms, intensifying the ache.
"No," Ella yelled, her voice piercing the air. Unsatisfied. "I'm not seeing it yet. You are better than this."
Those words struck a nerve within Zaire, prompting him to shift his weight onto his front foot and mount a more committed front. His moves lacked refinement compared to hers, but he put more force behind them, although he knew it would hardly make a difference against a Retired Knight who was well over 200 levels.
But Ella would be more content seeing him trying to get a hit.
"That's more like it," Ella remarked, parrying his attack, a hint of satisfaction in her smile.
They continued sparring for another two minutes, leaving Zaire utterly spent and sprawled on the ground. At that moment, he couldn't help but wish that someone else had adopted him, someone who wouldn't subject him to such gruelling training sessions every morning.
She seriously needed a man in her life, Zaire thought.
"Clean the weapons and tools and you'll have your day," Ella instructed, placing the duelling cane among the rest of the equipment.
Zaire responded with nothing more than a grunt.
"I'll go check on your sister," Ella continued. "Hopefully, she's finished preparing the meal, so we can go to the temple for her awakening."
Zaire remained on the ground, still catching his breath from the exertion his mother had put him through.
Today marked System Inauguration Day, an event where individuals who had reached the age of sixteen would awaken their Aether and embark on the path the gods set for them.
A year ago, Ella was adamant about moulding Zaire into a Knight like herself, despite his fervent aspirations to pursue the path of a Mage. While he displayed considerable skill in swordsmanship and other weapons, Zaire's true passion had always been spellcraft.
He had tirelessly studied spell models and diagrams, fearing that the gods might mistake his talent for swordsmanship and force him into becoming a Knight Squire, as his mother had always desired. Zaire had invested double the effort in learning the spell models than in honing his swordsmanship skills, but it seemed the gods were merciless in their choices.
On his Age day last year, Zaire's dreams of becoming a Mage remained unfulfilled. Matter of fact, he hadn't awakened any Route at all. Completely no reaction from the Aethers.
Even the most humble and unfledged youths of the village had awakened as Woodcutters, Farmers, or Merchants, but Zaire was left without any designation.
The gods had deemed him Routeless. A Faithless Cur.
If only they would grant me another opportunity, Zaire thought, clenching his jaws in frustration. However, he couldn't be certain that it would make any difference. They had attempted various other methods, infusing him with different types of Aether, but most only resulted in agonising concussions and rendered him unconscious.
"Stop gazing at nothing with that long face," a feminine voice broke him through his contemplation abruptly.
Startled, Zaire found himself face to face with Faye, clad in a simple white gown, ready for the Awakening Event. The siblings were strikingly dissimilar in appearance. Faye stood with a full head shorter than him, her features set her apart from the villagers. Her hair was of burning silver, cascading over her shoulders, in contrast to their foster mother Ella’s blonde and his black.
Had it not been for Ella's integrity, Zaire would have suspected that the retired knight had stolen Faye from a noble house. Yet, he was even more perplexed by the implications of her unique features.
It was very likely that Faye was blessed by the Aether. Her pearl eyes and silvery hair were hints of that. He couldn’t think of them as just a coincidence.
His frustration grew with those thoughts.
"If I'm not mistaken, Mum asked you to hone all the weapons and clean everything else," Faye reminded him, breaking the silence. "You're going to get an earful for that."
Zaire grunted as he rose from his seat and made his way to the toolbox. His fingers deftly manoeuvred a knife against the grinding stone, the metallic scraping sound filling the air. Faye lingered in the yard.
"Aren't you missing something?" she asked, eyebrows raised.
Pausing his grinding, Zaire lifted his gaze to meet hers. Clueless
"Aren’t you going to wish me luck?"
"I don't think you'll need any luck from me," he replied with a sigh. "But for what it's worth, I wish you good fortune, Pumpkin. Hopefully, you'll awaken a formidable Route, and Mum will stop nagging about training me to become your Knight."
Ella had expressed her desire for Zaire to become Faye's Knight since she had adopted them. However, Zaire wasn’t so sure about her requiring protection. As far as he was concerned, it was the others who needed protection from her.
Faye arched an eyebrow, looking at all the items scattered around him. All this could take over an hour to finish easily. "I understand that this is difficult for you, but I hope you'll be there during the ceremony."
"What are you talking about?" Zaire responded, his smile beaming brightly. "There's no way I would miss this occasion."
He made sure his words carried genuine excitement and support, assuring her.
Faye beamed as she excitedly returned to the house to prepare for the ceremony. Zaire couldn't help but release a sigh and refocused his attention on his sharpening task.
A few minutes later, Faye emerged from the house along with their mother. She informed Zaire that they expected him to join them in the temple. Knowing that the ceremony would last for a couple of hours, Zaire was confident he would be able to complete his work and catch up with them in due time.
Zaire hastened his grinding pace, swiftly honing the blades one after another. Fatigue began to take its toll, and his arms throbbed. In his haste, the sharp edge of the blade sliced through Zaire's index finger.
“Damnation,” Zaire cursed, jolting his finger, causing crimson blood to splatter across all weapons and tools that surrounded him.
It had already been over half an hour since Faye had departed for the ceremony, and he still had a few daggers left to sharpen. If he were to tend to the cut properly, he definitely would be delayed. Exhaling, Zaire gave a couple of minutes for the blood to stop flowing out and clutched the next weapon in line—a worn dagger with a hilt that had seen better days.
Prepared to resume his grinding, Zaire steadied the dagger against the sharpening stone, this time putting pressure with his palm instead of fingers.
However, to his astonishment, the moment his fingers made contact, the blade began disintegrating into a swirling cloud of black smoke.
“What in the world!” Zaire broke into a fit of uncontrollable coughs as the thick smoke enveloped him, obscuring his vision. Within moments, the smoke dissipated, leaving behind nothing but empty air.
The dagger had vanished, dissipating into thin air as if it had never existed.
Zaire stood frozen in disbelief, his gaze fixated on his empty hands where the weapon should have been. He blinked repeatedly, hoping to get a hint to explain the inexplicable turn of events. He had spent years cleaning and sharpening tools, but he had never encountered anything remotely similar to this disconcerting phenomenon.
"I hope Mum will understand," Zaire muttered to himself, a sense of relief washing over him as he realised that the vanished dagger was not one of the cherished weapons.
After completing his errands, Zaire swiftly changed into a more presentable tunic, eager to make his way towards the temple.
Carmel Village, situated on the very fringe of the empire, could easily be labelled as a secluded backwater village. Despite its remote location, it possessed an old temple devoted to Goddess Solas. Solas, one of the twelve prominent deities of the Skysea, the Mistress of Union and Harmony. The folks of Carmel were pretty diverse in their faith, but it didn’t stop them to crowd over the old temple on occasions such as this.
Nestled amidst a serene expanse of wheat fields, the temple stood as a weathered and unpretentious chapel that seemed to have withstood the test of time. Clearly failing to reflect the true grandeur and influence associated with the primordial goddess.
Time had taken its toll on the temple, evident with the stonewalls bearing marks of weathering. A similar, if not more, withered stone arches led his path to the sanctuary where people crowded over, clamouring. As Zaire crossed the arches, a modest statue at the heart of the plaza came into his sight. One simply couldn’t assume that to be a statue of the goddess without context, considering it was challenging to determine whether the statue depicted a male or female figure.
Zaire ventured inside, only to be met with a sea of people obstructing his path. The number of adults in attendance far surpassed the youths present for the ceremony. Zaire's eyes swiftly located the two women with their distinct blonde and silvery hair, positioned on one side of the gathering. To his surprise, it seemed that they had also noticed him, as Ella pointed him out to the young girl and waved her hand in his direction.
After a couple of good minutes of shoving and wrestling with the people, Zaire managed to reach them, but he was already breathless by that point. It appeared that Faye was patiently awaiting her turn, as the guest priest called individuals forward one by one to the Ascendant Pool in the other chamber.
Fortunately, the priest conducting the ceremony was not the same one who liked to blabber too much during Zaire's previous visit. Nevertheless, an unsettling restlessness settled in his stomach as he regarded others.
"Are you alright?" Ella asked, concern laced in her voice.
"I'm fine," he replied, "just a bit breathless from the sprint."
"It's good that you came," his foster mother interjected. "I understand this isn't easy for you, but you must realise there are other paths beyond what the gods set us for."
Zaire clenched and unclenched his jaw, choosing to remain silent as he settled himself in a corner, leaning against the wall. They had indeed explored other avenues, ones that diverged from paths the pantheons chose for them, but none had brought about any meaningful change within him, except subjecting him to excruciating agony.
Regardless, it was Faye's special day, and he couldn't make it all about himself. Taking a deep breath, he adopted a carefree expression and engaged in conversation with his family.
The newly appointed guest priest for the ceremony appeared to be a stern man. Observing the chaotic gathering in the hall, which was no better than a bustling fish market, he dismissed the families who had already completed their ceremonies. Even among those still present, he allowed only two relatives to accompany the youths of appropriate age.
In a matter of seconds, the hall grew more spacious as more than half the attendees dispersed.
"Now we'll have fewer people bothering Faye once she completes her ceremony," Zaire joked, playfully nudging the silver-haired would-be maiden on the shoulder.
Faye snorted in response. "What, you think I'd enjoy when boys pester me until Mum has to brandish her sword to scare them away?"
Faye glowered at him, but upon witnessing his laughter, she couldn't help but burst into giggles herself. Her nervousness about the ceremony subsided significantly.
Zaire scoffed, exclaiming, "What are you even worried about? You got this."
“It’s just that. . .” Faye's voice trailed off. She didn't need to finish her sentence because Zaire understood her fears all too well. She dreaded the possibility of her ceremony turning out exactly like his. Her unique traits made her more apprehensive than confident.
"You'll be fine," Zaire reassured her, gently patting her head. Being a head taller than her, it was effortless for him to make her feel small and comforted. But that’ll end soon. . .
In quick succession, people gradually cleared out, and within half an hour, the hall was nearly empty, with only three more families remaining for the ceremony.
"Oh, crap! I need to go," Zaire exclaimed abruptly, startling both Faye and their foster mother. "Nature calls." He provided a curt explanation for his sudden departure and hastily rushed out of the temple.
Zaire swiftly made his way out of the hall, the sparse number of people remaining making his way out easier. However, in his haste, he failed to consider the possibility of encountering folks just outside the door.
Zaire caught sight of locks of golden hair just before colliding with someone the moment he emerged from the door. It was a young girl who had just undergone her age ceremony and ended up falling alone from the impact.
Zaire stumbled, barely regaining his balance and scattered attention until he could finally discern who he had collided with.
"Diana," Zaire instinctively called out, stooping down to extend a helping hand. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
"You shouldn't be running inside the temple," Diana said, raising her right arm to inspect the bruise on her elbow. Her eyes were teary.
"I’m really sorry," Zaire repeated, more genuinely.
"It's alright," Diana sighed, accepting his arm and allowing him to assist her in standing up. Her expression showed she was bothered by something else entirely other than the little bruise she got from the collision. It could be that she didn’t get the right class she desired.
If it weren’t for the urgency, Zaire would have stayed there for a few minutes to listen to her and reassure her. But the growing pressure in his bladder made it harder for him to be considerate.
Regardless, the situation didn’t conclude there as Zaire hoped, as he found a group of youths led by Alex, a blond youth who went through Ella’s for a few months.
There was no way in hell they could resist the urge to aid a damsel in distress. Granted, in this particular instance, the damsel was only mildly bruised, but you try to explain that to them.
"I wondered who else would have the audacity to act so impudently within the sacred temple," Alex interjected. The blond youth had undergone his ceremony last year, along with Zaire. "Of course, it had to be you, Zaire. Why are you even here? Hoping to partake in the awakening ceremony once again?"
Alex didn't miss the chance to strike where it hurt the most. However, his counterparts were one level above him.
"Fat chance of that," Kash, a short, mousey-looking black-haired boy of their age, chimed in. "Ignoring everything, his blatant behaviour in the goddess's temple alone shows that he's unsuited for the path."
"Kash, we're all aware of your lack of intelligence," Zaire retorted, more irritated than angry. "No need to open your mouth and prove it to us again."
The mousey-looking youth glared at Zaire before turning his attention to the others. "Did I say something wrong?" he barked. "You have no fibre of reverence for the goddess. Why do you think you're still lost and—"
Zaire stifled a yawn. "I have more important matters to attend to than engaging in a pointless argument with you lots,”
The persistent pressure in his bladder reminded him of the true urgency at hand. With an apologetic smile directed at the blonde maiden, he hurried away.
Tackling the argument, Zaire now faced another predicament he had no time to dwell upon. While the temple may have been humble and worn out, it still resided within the holy embrace of the goddess. How could he commit sacrilege by pissing in its vicinity?
However, the pressure continued to mount, leaving Zaire with no other option but to retreat to the rear of the sacred grounds. Discreetly, he found a secluded spot merely a few blocks away from the hallowed area.
To an outsider, it might still appear blasphemous, but he clung to hope that the goddess would be more understanding than her devotees.
Zaire let out a deep exhale, a mixture of relief and frustration intertwining within him. His shoulders slumped as he directed his gaze towards the imposing statue of the goddess perched atop the temple's peak.
Zaire gritted his teeth. Why was it only me? What have I ever done? He wanted to ask her, but he had asked such questions countless times already. The goddess, to her credit, remained silent all these time.
Abruptly, he found his attention fixated on a small window high on the stone wall as Alex’s words resurfaced in his mind.
Without conscious thought, Zaire found himself scaling the walls, driven by an inexplicable force. He climbed towards the window that led to the ceremonial chamber.
Zaire wasn’t even sure what he was trying to prove or if he even thought of the consequences when he latched himself on the window ledge. It was simply an impulse.
Soft rays of sunlight filtered through stained-glass windows, casting a gentle glow upon the worn stone floors of the ceremonial chamber as Zaire cast his sight inside. Amidst the hallowed walls, tapestries, and murals that tell stories of the goddess, Zaire found the small pool next to the altar where another Goddess’s statue stood, in far better shape than the one outside.
A young boy, now an adult, just completed his ceremony and departed. Within a minute, Zaire caught sight of the blond priest ushering Faye into the room. Instinctively, Zaire lowered his head, ensuring to directly not to stare at the high-level priest of the goddess.
The priest focused solely on his sister, guiding her towards the pool. Faye approached the small pool with a reserved expression, her gaze fixed upon the clear and dense water that seemed to possess an otherworldly quality. The surface of the water reflected light differently from ordinary water, as thin misty smoke puffed out.
Faye hesitated for a moment, her mind enveloped in a flurry of unknown thoughts.
"Do not resist the Aether, Daughter," the priest advised, his voice carrying a tone of solemnity. "Embrace its essence, open your heart to the Goddess and let her lead you to your designated path."
Gathering her wits, Faye stepped into the pool, allowing herself to be completely submerged in the hallowed water. Zaire, observing from above, couldn't help but feel a tinge of anxiety.
However, any doubts he harboured dissipated as he witnessed a radiant white glow emanating from the Ascendant pool. Faye emerged from the water, her figure outlined by a blinding light that enveloped her form.
"Blessed! Solus!" exclaimed the priest, his voice filled with astonishment. "The Dream Aether, I knew it."
The intense white light faded as swiftly as it had materialised, leaving Faye slightly disoriented. Her eyes shimmered with an ethereal glow, reminiscent of light dancing through her pearl eyes. A moment later, everything returned to normal.
Dream Aether, Zaire thought, that has to be the rarest form of Aether under ordinary circumstances.
Zaire had his suspicions about it for years. Regardless, this changed everything.
The priest knew it too. If the priest had previously held a mild interest in his sister, now he was entirely captivated, granting her his undivided attention.
"Come on," the priest ushered her out. "I'll explain things more clearly to you, and I shall need to have a conversation with your mother. You have a bright future ahead of you, Fair Lady."
With them gone, Zaire had the room all to himself for whatever he wanted to try. However, he still waited for a couple of minutes, even though the priest had shut the door behind him, signalling the end of the ceremony.
The latch of the stained-glass window opened effortlessly as if it were a sign from the goddess to guide him into the ceremonial chamber. The opening was spacious enough for him to slide in without any trouble. However, the landing posed a challenge, considering he was still about three and a half metres above the ground.
Zaire couldn't afford to cause any disturbance, so he held onto the window ledge and dangled his legs downward. Preparing himself, he leapt like a house cat, albeit only on his feet.
His landing was nearly perfect, causing minimal disturbance. But that didn't give him an advantage; he had to finish this quickly and make his exit before anyone noticed.
Zaire cast one last glance at the statue of the goddess on the altar, his right palm clasped over his heart in a praying manner.
Then he submerged in the cold water. Instantly, a chill rushed through his spine. Unlike what happened to Faye, nothing developed in his case as he remained underwater, controlling his breathing.
The priests had instructed them to be open to the Aether and not resist it. However, how could Zaire resist anything when there was no reaction from the water, except for the uncomfortable shivers coursing through his body?
It was exactly like the previous time, no reaction, and… Zaire's thought process abruptly halted as he noticed the water starting to swirl around him in a terrifying surge.
Zaire couldn't even comprehend what was happening to him as the chill spread through his body and mind, completely stunning him. The priest had advised not to resist, but he wasn't sure if he could even if he tried.
[Awakening conditions met... Initiating Protocol... Analysing...]

Zaire was completely taken aback, overwhelmed by the unfolding events. And before long, he lost consciousness...

As the first rays of morning light peeked through the tattered blinds, Jack slowly opened his eyes, groaning slightly as he rolled out of bed on reflex and began his pushups. Lowering himself down and pressing himself up again like it was second nature to him, Jack slowly woke up and took stock. He felt a little more relaxed and well rested than normal, an unusual but welcome change from the nightmares and poor sleep he had gotten used to. But whether it was his time spent relaxing and watching films with the others the previous night or just sheer exhaustion finally catching up to him, he wasn't sure.
Regardless, Jack checked the time, the system of which Sephy had gone through with him a few times. Measurement systems were quite finicky here, but after just over a week of waking up in similar fashion Jack saw that the numbers looked similar to all the previous nights, and when he stopped a moment to listen, he couldn’t hear anybody else moving about. Even Dante was still asleep, and Jack was pleased to see that the ‘dog’ was breathing a bit better. Whatever Rayle had done seemed to work, though he’d still search for the nearest vet just in case Dante got this way again.
Tiptoeing across the room Jack quickly changed into some exercise clothes and grabbed his towel from where it was dumped on the floor from the previous day. This was a routine he had very rarely ever compromised on ever since he arrived in this realm, and like clockwork Jack tiptoed down the stairs and poured himself a drink of cold tea from the pot, downing it quickly before carefully opening the door to outside. Rayle was still asleep, resting their body on the natural ground to take advantage of their Druidic powers to slowly heal as they slept, but the two opossum-like Screediips, Thulu and Stega poked their heads out nervously to stare at Jack as he crept his way down the long-abandoned ancient road to the district wall. The only sounds were a few small birds fluttering well above him, and the soft thuds of his feet dragging themselves to the starting line.
Pulling out the display for his commlink was always a hassle for Jack ever time he tried, but he was getting better, correctly selecting the music app, clicking on the ‘workout’ tag and hitting ‘random’ with only a few errors or missclicks. As the heavy bass kicked in, beginning a strange combination of what sounding like a cross between death metal and yodelling, Jack started his warm up, his legs feeling stiff and barely functional until he got into a rhythm and soon began running without a problem.
It was about an hour before Jack wound down, seeing that Rayle had gotten up from their spot and left the back door open. So, finishing his workout he lightly jogged over, slipping through and seeing Nika awkwardly make another pot of tea.
“Wish I could have joined you.” The Kizun sighed. “Still sore but at least I’ll be able to come to school with you guys, no way am I gonna risk getting in detention, so it looks like I’m gonna try and tough it out.”
“Hey, you shouldn’t feel pressured to go if you’re hurt!” Jack cautioned. “We know a bunch of people that definitely won’t be able to come in, surely they won’t hand out detentions after a crisis?”
“They have before.” Rayle shook their head as they handed Jack a mug of water, which he downed greedily. “Glad I woke up in time, if it wasn’t for that Lifestone of yours I would probably still be in a coma.”
“Yeah about that.” that reminded Jack. “How are you holding up Rayle?”
“Much better!” The Squa’Kaar smiled nervously. “My connection to the earth is much stronger here, so I’ll be fine! I feel bad for those that lack the ability though…”
“Yeah, if it’s all the same with you Rayle I prefer sleeping in my room instead of freezing my ass outside.” Nika snorted.
“We always have the Lesser Lifestone?” Jack questioned. “Are you able to use that and get better?”
“You have a point.” Nika smiled. “But I’ll wait for the others to get up first, they probably need it more.”
“Doubt it.” Jack shrugged, “You’re hurt the most, you might as well get patched up otherwise you’re gonna have me worried all day.”
“Alright.” Nika smiled unsurely. “I’ll talk to Alora, you go have a shower before you stink up the place!”
“Heh, alright.” Jack sighed as he quickly made his way upstairs.
Once he left, Nika immediately reached into one of her pockets, frantically pulling out her bottle of pills. Quickly taking one, she gave the bottle a shake and sighed when she realised she was getting low. She had been taking pills to throw off her heat cycle more regularly now Jack was living with them, and times like these when he was either helping her with something or just straight up worried about her really set her off.
“You should stop fighting it.” Rayle pointed out from where she was curled up on the sofa sipping her tea, still wrapped up in the blanket they had taken outside while Nika gave her a look. “It’s not healthy to fight against an important aspect of your nature, why not just give in to it?”
“No.” Nika sighed before elaborating. “I mean, yeah I’ve thought about it but I honestly don’t think I’m anywhere near ready for that kind of stuff yet and I don’t think Jack is either. Besides, it’s not debilitating and the pills usually last a while. It’s just one of those things I’ll need to get used to.”
“Will it have any long-term effects?” the Druid asked curiously.
“Um…I don’t think so.” Nika shrugged. “My people have been using these since before our recorded history, ever since we no longer needed to rapidly spread, and there doesn’t seem to be any kind of built-up resistance over the generations. Buying these is the real problem though. My people are quite spread out amongst known and probably unknown space too, but finding a regular supplier can be a real pain sometimes even on the Ring. I’ll be alright. I usually am...”

Jack’s body was still glistening with sweat from his run as he entered the bathroom and locked the door. Quickly shucking his clothes off and turning on the water, he waited for it to warm up a little bit before stepping in. As the hot water cascaded down his body he let out a sigh of relief as he washed away the grime, before leaning back against the cubicle wall and allowing a moment of relaxation before he knew he would have to walk into whatever shitshow awaited the group today.
He was brought back from his thoughts when the shower made a slight stuttering sound, prompting him to quickly turn it off and wrap a towel around him. Walking over to the sink and looking into the old, cracked mirror, he inspected the telltale signs of hair growing above his top lip. He hadn’t really been taught to shave before his arrival, because he hadn’t needed to learn yet, but Jack didn’t really like the idea of starting to grow a moustache or a beard at his age. Reaching into the bag he brought in with him he pulled out a knife he had been using for this purpose for the last week or so, which he kept reasonably sharpened. Though he didn’t know if there was any shaving cream or anything sold that could help protect his skin and make the process a little quicker and less stress-free, he still proceeded regardless, carefully running the blade up and down…
He quickly looked around as without warning, the door opened to reveal Vanya, who looked at him in a panic as he nicked his skin with the blade.
“No!” She yelled as she rushed over to him. “What are you doing!”
“Woah wait! Vanya! Calm down!” Jack tried to wave her off in confusion as she grabbed the arm holding the knife, allowing her to take it from him as he just stood there baffled, as she cast a quick healing spell on him.
Wait? Did she think he was…
“Hey.” Jack calmly put his hands on Vanya’s trembling arms. “That wasn’t what you thought it was, I’m not checking out just yet.”
‘At least never like that, since I’m a fucking coward…’ Jack thought to himself. “You okay Vanya?”
“Um…I’m sorry, I…” Vanya began, and had to take a few moments to calm herself down, breathing deeply in and out as a coping mechanism. “I’m sorry Jack.” She started again. “In the moment I didn’t know what you were doing and I thought the worst.”
“Nah, it’s fine.” Jack tried to give her a reassuring smile, knowing that he must have inadvertently triggered something in the rabbit-like girl. “I was just doing guy stuff, didn’t mean to spook you. How did you even get in if I locked the door?”
“I don’t know, I just turned it as normal and it opened, it might be broken.” She motioned to the long-cracked mirror. “Just like a bunch of other things, you guys mentioned you needed to do some home repairs.”
“Yeah.” Jack sighed, though realistically he didn’t feel bad about it. It was something more normal that he had an aptitude for, as he often helped his father and his brothers around the house with chores on the weekends. “Something might be off with the plumbing or something too, the shower was sputtering a bit towards the end but I wasn’t actually using it for that long.”
“Yeah I think Alora mentioned having the occasional utility problems when guests are over, I’m guessing it might be more problematic now there’s more people living here for the foreseeable future.” Vanya sighed. “I hope there’s enough for me.”
“There should be. If not then maybe Zayle can help with their water spirit?” Jack grinned, before suddenly realising something. “Um…mind getting off me and letting me get changed first?”
“Oh! Sorry!” Vanya panicked as she quickly moved back, freeing the towel around Jack’s waist to fall to the ground…
“Oh…” The Chuna just about got out with wide eyes, before Jack took the initiative and gently manhandled her out of the room, shutting the door behind him.
Quickly finishing his shave and getting dressed Jack waved the embarrassed Vanya in, who had pulled out her small handbag, somehow managing to yank out a fully folded school uniform for the day. Jack guessed it was something similar to the extra-dimensional wicker basket the Squa’Kaar twins had used to store most of their belongings. Heading downstairs, Jack was happy to see that the rest of the household was awake in various states of lucidity. Nika was wide awake and eating breakfast with Alora, who was a little tired but otherwise coping. Chiyo and the Squa’Kaar were sitting on the sofa catching the headlines while Sephy was still looking tired browsing her commlink.
“You’ve got some more bounties on you Jack.” Sephy cautioned. “But nowhere near as bad as last week, probably not gonna be a problem.”
“Who has he pissed off now?” Nika asked curiously.
“Actually it’s all of us.” Sephy shrugged. “Apparently the Ogar clan the Laird belonged to seeks a Weregild for his death. They either weren’t able to put up much or just don’t give a shit and put up a token amount that satisfies their tradition. We’ve also got some anonymous accounts freshly made that are bumping Jack up again…”
“Malakiel?” Jack asked, worried.
“Nah. It’s gotta be related to the Klowns. They’ve tagged a bunch of people, all prominent people that are publicly known to have had a hand in fighting off the Klowns. You, Luvia, Svaarti, Devil’s Daughter, and everyone’s favourite asshole Svaartal are up there, but the amounts are spread fairly evenly. Oh hey! Mr Sparrel’s here too! And holy crap, so is Master Kull!”
“How are the Klowns able to post bounties?” Zayle asked in confusion as their earth spirit lumbered over and brought over a tray of tea.
“Because it isn’t them themselves actually doing it.” Nika pointed out. “It’s all the crazies actually backing them on the datanet that want to see everything burn. The damn simps!”
The Cult of Jingubash is likely involved too. Chiyo added. They are known to exist but they’re treated the same as the Cult of the Destroyer. The Klowns are their public force, but there are many worshippers that hide in the shadows and keep their allegiances well hidden. They’re not believed to be organised in the way cultists of the Destroyer usually are, but they’re still very dangerous.
“Good to know.” Jack shrugged. “At least I’m one of many, any bounty hunters I should know about?”
“Nope.” Sephy smiled. “You’re all clear on the public list, but that doesn’t mean hunters aren’t coming after you, or they just haven't announced it publicly yet.”
“Yeah, when you’re known to have done a public service for the city, people tend to frown on those that want to mess with you.” Nika grinned as the conversation ended, with Jack quickly accepting the breakfast Zayle made for him as he watched the news, with Rayle occasionally skipping the more boring stories.
“...dire news as people are still being recovered from this scene of devastation…”
“..The CEO of Corvin Enterprises has threatened to hunt down and expel all ‘peasants’ from the newly annexed district…”
“It is currently unknown what occurred at the Pallid Pit, however Drow involvement in cleansing it is speculated to be the likely cause…”
“Red Legion forces have been pushed back from the Taurin Sector, causing many to wonder - Is the Red Legion on the brink of defeat?”
“....it is unknown if this is a possible sign of a new Nascent Demon Lord awakening on Hive Station Bastilla, but local factions are investigating….”
“Local rangers have confirmed a mass-migration of many Zorn tribes heading westward into the unexplored wilderness. The reason for this is unknown…”
“We have Breaking News!” A cheery avian female suddenly popped up on the screen. She was in a large hall amidst a crowd of journalists with a podium and lectern combo at the end. “I am reporting live from Cocaine Keep, where local warlord Commander Cocaine has called a press conference in light of the apparent death of Devil’s Daughter…oh! Looks like he’s about to speak!”
The camera zoomed in on a large biped walking to the podium. With greenish grey skin and several bone plates protecting their maw, the mean-looking, aquatic-looking warrior was wearing a full set of lithe combat armour that hugged his large frame, with an oversized pair of goggles and a plain white bandana.
“Ooooh yeah!” The warrior roared intensely, shutting up the crowd instantly as he posed with bulging muscles for the cameras as his voice echoed throughout the hall. “I’ve heard the news, yeah! I’ve seen the Klowns, yeah! I’ve smelled the chaos, yeah! And I sense the cries of the people for a hero, yeah! SO COMMANDER COCAINE WILL ANSWER! OOOOH YEAH!”
In the views of the cameras, Jack could see the front rows of journalists start to back away, almost as if they were afraid of the volatile warlord doing something crazy.
Jack couldn’t blame them.
“Yeah! I know you’re all feeling scared and alone out there, yeah! I know things are bad, yeah!” The lunatic continued, with energetic motions towards the stunned crowd. “But let me tell you people something. Commander Cocaine may not be the biggest or strongest there is, but I’ve got heart! I’ve got spirit! And I’ve got lots of cocaine! Ooooh yeah!”
He made several poses with his muscles bulging beneath his armour before he concluded his speech.
”You know who I am, but just in case you don’t, I am Commander Cocaine, and I am the hero this city needs! Anyone with an active bounty better watch out, because Commander Cocaine is coming! OOOOH YEAH!”
With that he strutted off as several reporters from the front row tried to ask him some questions.
“Well, we just heard from Commander Cocaine, who has just sworn to be the hero this city needs!” The reporter started after regaining their composure. “If you want to aid him, you can join the Cocaine Crusaders at the following…”
That’s enough crazy for me right now. Chiyo interrupted as she used her powers to call the remote to her and changed the channel.
“Heh, check this out!” Sephy suddenly cackled. “Svaartal’s got a fat bounty on him, probably from fans of Devil’s Daughter!”
“I hope Devil’s Daughter is okay…” Alora spoke up sadly, causing Sephy to calm down. “We may be partially responsible for what happened…”
“No, Devil’s Daughter made her choice using the information we gave her, we couldn’t have predicted what she would do with it.” Nika reasoned. “And we’re totally going for that bounty, right? We still owe Svaartal a receipt for coming after Jack last week, it’ll be the perfect time to get him if we all work together to take him down.”
“You forget that he’s aligned himself with a powerful Drow House!” Alora chided her. “Who we really want to shake off! As good as we are, we cannot stand against them if we give them greater cause to seek our destruction!”
“They came for us already!” Sephy pointed out. “How could it be worse? Besides, we can take them!”
“It could be a lot worse!” Alora cautioned. “And not only are the Drow Nobles powerful individually, they have a powerful force backing them. There’s a reason why they are a major faction here! You’d risk putting all of us in massive danger!”
“Svaartal has to separate from them at some point.” Nika reasoned. “What do you think Jack?”
“I don’t want to go after him.” Jack immediately replied, truthfully. “But if he gives me a good reason to, I'll face him again. However, if he leaves us alone, we can leave him alone.”
“Well, that’s decided.” Alora sighed in relief. “We haven’t got too much time before we need to go, so let’s all hurry up and get ready!”
As they all hustled and did what they needed to do, Nika sat down on the sofa already ready, unhappy with the decision on Svaartal. He was a dangerous threat to the group, and after his ambush on them she knew he had to be taken out before he had a chance to come for them again. She had tried to take him out during the Klown attack when everyone else was safe and nobody was looking, without success. But here, there was an opportunity to take him out for good without getting their own hands dirty.
Logging in to one of her proxy accounts, Nika bumped up Svaartal’s bounty some more, making it that much more lucrative….
‘Shouldn’t have tried to kill Jack, asshole.’ She thought to herself with a sly smile.

The queues to the school entrance checkpoints were shorter than usual due to the Klown attack, but not depressingly so. Several of the students were talking to each other while they waited in line as they looked up and down the rows in hopes of seeing their friends. To Jack’s mind, many seemed relieved that there weren’t as many victims as they had expected, and the realisation that he played a major part in saving a lot of his fellow students around him during the attack gave him a warm feeling in the back of his mind.
Unfortunately, said good thoughts evaporated when they got closer to the prefects.
“Halt!” One of the Korrigan prefects ordered the group as they approached. “Due to increased security measures you will submit to a full pat down. Failure to comply will result in your immediate termination.”
“Heh, as if they could take us.” Sephy grinned to the others as she was surprisingly the first to volunteer, though Jack had no doubt the sneaky Skritta had ways of hiding what she didn’t want to be seen.
“You two, come this way.” The head prefect observing their queue told Jack and Alora as they moved separately to be searched.
“What have you got hidden here?” the Prefect narrowed his eyes at Jack as they neared the end of their check. It had been quite thorough but he hadn’t given the Prefects a hard time because of it. He could understand the need for additional security in light of the Klown attack, but he wished they weren’t so heavy handed…
“Those are my balls.” Jack squirmed away. “Handle with care, or preferably not at all!”
“Yeah only we get to do that!” Sephy grinned as Jack sputtered in shock.
“You may go.” The Prefect told him. “Actually…wait a moment.”
“Is there a problem?” Jack asked warily, not wanting to be given any grief by these guys.
“I…” the grey-skinned Prefect began before they found their words. “I want to thank you and your friends for what you did at the party, many of my friends and colleagues are still alive because of you.”
“I…that’s alright, I just did what I could to help.” Jack replied, abruptly taken aback by the words. As bad as the Prefects could be, they were still people.
As the rest of the group made it past the checkpoint to head to the lifts, Jack groaned internally as he saw several drow waiting for them up ahead. If looks alone could kill, Izadora was certainly trying as she snarled at the human, who grinned defiantly in return while wearing the shades he had picked up from one of the two Drow Nobles that had attacked him during their raid on the Pallid Pit. The two brothers, Soren and Kravel, were nearby dealing with the checkpoint, but Jack could see they had clocked their group’s arrival.
The huge drow was there too, close to Izadora, and casually leaning against the entry staircase looking bored. Another smaller drow was there who he didn’t immediately recognise, wasn’t she with Soren when the drow came to pick up Svaarti? She certainly stood out from the crowd; despite the slim, athletic build similar to most of the other Drow, Jack could see several school uniform violations, with the thin, high collared black leather-like jacket, with interwoven silvery circuitry that appeared functional being the most blatant, and several dyed strands of light purple amongst her naturally white long hair.
And finally, Svaartal himself. Standing at attention, he was leaning on the staff of Devil’s Daughter, and staring right at him.
“Someone’s chasing clout with that staff.” Nika growled, keeping her hands ready to draw weapons, ignoring the pain of movement as she put on an air of confidence.
“Let’s try not to escalate this if we can.” Alora cautioned.
“You.” Izadora growled under her breath, and the Eladrie sighed resignedly.
“Hey there!” Jack grinned widely, as he gave the Drow Matriarch a friendly wave while many students stopped to watch the exchange, knowing what had happened the last time. “How was your weekend?” He mocked, though he kept up the friendly facade.
“Better than yours I suspect.” She snarled back. “I’m surprised you’re alive, Outsider.”
“Wait, what?” The unknown Drow with them perked up, looking baffled, turning around to stare at Izadora, as Jack saw the traces of several neon circuitry designs peek up from the collar of her school uniform. “This is the guy that kicked your ass and got you all worked up, sister? He doesn’t look so tough to me! My mech could totally wreck him, shame the High Matriarch said no!”
Jack didn’t think the foul expression of Izadora couldn’t get worse, but he was almost amused to see that he was quite wrong. Both Svaartal and the huge drow covered their smirks as the Matriarch rounded on who was apparently her sister, even as the unusual Drow waltzed closer to Jack, peering at him with a curious expression. Nika immediately had her shotgun levelled at their head as Chiyo drew in her power, ready to lash out.
“What?” The strange drow rolled her eyes at the girls as she stopped. “I haven’t even done anything yet!”
“Dextra.” Izadora snapped with gritted teeth. “Satisfy your foolish curiosity another time.”
“You talk too much for a humiliated Matriarch trying to save face.” Sephy chipped in with her ricocheting plasma pistols pointed at the ground, though Jack knew from the angle that she had subtly taken aim at Izadora. “Jack kicked your ass right here, and we took out your special forces at the Pallid Pit!”
“I will make you…” Izadora snarled, before they were interrupted by a familiar, cool voice.
“Izadora, what is the reason you are accosting this group of students?” Rena called out, as she approached the crowd, and Jack was surprised and glad to see Nya trailing gingerly behind her, staring at Svaartal’s newly acquired staff. “It appears that you are holding up the flow of traffic.”
“I am simply ensuring that they know the rules, Rena.” Izadora dismissed. “I-”
“I doubt it.” Rena snapped, unamused. “Your duties are done here, I have been instructed to tell you to report to Mr Zhiel’s office immediately before class.”
Izadora grumbled but ultimately complied, while Svaartal and Dextra slinked away. Only the large one remained behind, looking at Rena almost amusedly as she gave orders to the students to disperse, before he finally turned lazily and slunk up the stairs, but not before subtly looking at Jack for just a tiny moment with a thin smirk.
“I would suggest you all go to your form classes, as there have been several changes in light of the Killer Klown’s attack. I will however address you about this incident later.” Rena sternly told their group, as Alora gently pulled Jack away, quietly pleading with him not to start any trouble, despite the human’s wish to chase after and attack Izadora again, and to give Rena some backtalk.
“Jack, did you really have to wear those shades you looted from the Mal’Kar’s around their surviving family?” The Eladrie sighed disapprovingly as they left the area.
“Yep!” He grinned as they made their way to the lifts.
“Totally worth it…”

Hey y'all.
So I'm gonna be playing a campaign soonish and I had a character in mind that was a fiend warlock phoenix sorcerer. Her backstory was that she'd been groomed since birth by a devil who slowly poisoned her against her family and had her kill them in return for power. So now she roams around as an infernal sub-contractor with a really thick nordic accent.
Anyways, she's mechanically gonna be a fiend warlock and a phoenix sorcerer. The phoenix sorcerers' reach to the blaze thing is going to hard carry the damage in the build. Basically, it allows me to add my charisma modifier every time I roll fire damage. Her insane damage comes from transmuting hex and eldritch blast/ magic missile to fire and then adding a +10 per eldritch blast/magic missile bolt.
So my question here is: Should I do 3 levels of warlock and go sorcerer or do 5 levels of warlock instead? The game's gonna go from 3 to 9-10 ish.
The thing that's making me lean warlock 5 is that I'll do pact of the tome and the level 3 rituals go really hard and I can pick them up for free if I take the invocation. Also 3rd level slots are fire. The reason for going sorcerer is that well... more spell slots, more sorcery points, more spells.

(Ok, so let me provide a big heads up, I suck at typing out really wordy things. So I'm aware that there will be spelling/grammar errors so please bear with me.

Alright, so I work part-time in O/N Maintenance.
The Poopdeck Vampires.
The Black Friday Limb Collectors.
Whatever you wanna call it. Four days a week, 8 hour shifts, constant schedule. I am very chill with this job. Of the 5 previous years of maintenance in other jobs with a dayshift, this one is my favorite.
The reasons being: There are no customers, easy set of tasks to do if you can deal with cleaning up fecal messes, you can shut off your brain and multi-task very easily without interruption, and the occasional big spills can be knocked out by the scrubber 90% of the time.
My only issue with this workplace is one co-worker. Let's call her Lisa (58f).
Let's start at the very beginning.

Months 1-3

Really smooth. My TL is super chill. Told me that the job is easy as long as the following main tasks are finished before the day is over: The floors swept and scrubbed, trash is collected and tossed, bathrooms are cleaned, breakroom and office are cleaned, the parking lot is swept. If we had extra time we could dust the apparel, pick up hangers, etc.
For our staff we had Lisa, Tom (29m? Never got to know his age so this is an assumption. Also hired a month before me), some dude that got fired for getting his 5th point, and me.
When I started, I asked if there was a direct to-do list because my previous maintenance jobs had a setup to ride through the day without trouble. Lisa told me that we didn't need it because the tasks were that easy and interchangeable. Cool?
Two months in we lost a guy because he was riding that sweet 4.5 and crashed. Rest it peace man, hope that promotion is doing him well.
We had a lot of struggles and close calls before the shifts ended, but they weren't too bad. Lisa was nice and spoke a lot to keep the shift swift and easy, and Tom was super chill.
I did get a warning from one of the stock clerks though. They told me this: "Don't let Lisa bully you too much".
With like.
A serious tone.
I brushed that off because Lisa was nice to me at the time.

Months 3-6

This is where Tom and I get familiar with the job. We're still trying to get the main tasks done and started to notice that the reason why we were getting many close calls to not finishing main tasks (or just skipping a few) is because Lisa has been doing things unrelated to the main tasks or just, uh, chilling around and talking to the stock clerks or people from the other departments. She's been working in the store for 7 years so... She knows best... right?
Management chewed out our TL and that carried down to Lisa. So Lisa ended up blaming Tom and I for not doing our jobs well enough. She claimed to be the voice of management and telling us to do things that we thought management wanted us to do.
This kinda applied pressure to the team and stressed us the fuck out.
We also saw that Lisa has just not been doing any of the main tasks so Tom and I had a talk with our TL. Turns out that Lisa has been using our TL and SM as an excuse to do some of her tasks for her or overreacted simple requests and made them sound mandatory.
After a bit of this, the pressure got Tom who eventually caved in and broke down into tears at the workplace 3/4ths in the shift. This was because Tom and Lisa agreed to meet up after last break to clear the lot, but Lisa was gone, the scrubber was gone, we put 2-2 together and he asked me to help him after 10-15 mins. We needed to sweep the parking lot ASAP. So we did it and Tom got this text message (imo dumb idea to exchange phone #'s with co-workers but that's just me), and Lisa texted a stupid paragraph about fairness and stuff. We went inside and she chewed him the fuck out even though we explained to her that we needed the lot to be finished. It was a main task.
So I confronted Lisa, trying to be neutral and say "Hey, this is not ok". She deflected that and said that "Oh, Tom needs to be a man and talk to me like you are right now. You guys needs to do your jobs.". I told her that she hasn't been doing her tasks either and being a hypocrite about it, she deflected "I'm not a hypocrite! I'm just doing my job and helping my co-workers do theirs."
This got me to put my foot down and tell the TL what happened (they even saw the text message), and that we needed a to-do list.
I kept nudging them to get it done ASAP and then bam. We had a list. Tom has also moved to shifts where he'd only wax the floors on the days Lisa and I worked. Otherwise, he's just working with TL. This leaves me to work with Lisa every day.
So the list goes as followed for only Lisa and I.
For days 1 and 3, one of us is tasked with

• Cleaning the breakroom and office
• Cleaning the restrooms
• Keep the floors swept
• Sweep the parking lot
• Extra (scraping the floors, sweep gondolas, whatever to kill time)

while the other is tasked to

• Take out the trash/recycle
• Sweep apparel
• Scrub the floors of the whole store
• Extra (same as above)

Days 2 and 4 we swap.
Easy, right? You can't possibly fuck up a LIST of MANDITORY things TO DO.
A month or two later, she started doing other unrelated tasks and stressed us out. We'd nudge her to get back on track and she'll just ignore us and continue talking to people from other departments for like, 20-40 minutes. Sometimes she'd take the tasks that she did the previous day and made us repeat tasks, which I'm fine with. So I'll ignore that.
You can tell Tom lost his will to keep this job because the maintenance room has been progressively getting messier as weeks went by with wax thrown everywhere too.
Right before my vacation in December, Lisa pitched a fit about how lazy and unproductive we were and I just left it to Tom because I was not having it.
Lisa's been causing trouble monthly.
Fuck Lisa.

Months 6-12 (Now)

After coming back from my vacation, nothing changed, Tom and I would always pray that Lisa calls out and when she does, the stock clerks and TLs from the O/N stocking department will always see us in our best moods.
I still followed the list that I had our TL make in the previous few months. It's good to get the job done right away and the best thing I can do.
Lisa has somewhat started following the list too-ish? Barely? Idfk. I wasn't moving from this list.
Cue January 29th of this year.
-Day started with her not taking care of the breakroom trash. Ok fine. She's probably going to do it later on that day.
-I took the scrubber out and scrubbed the floors. Saw her in the cooler section doing something, idfc. Finished a chunk of the store and parked the scrubber to charge. I didn't drain it yet btw, I was going to do that after lunch. The trash was still in the breakroom.
-I came back from lunch to this dirty pile of pallet chips and hair fluff that you could easily tell came from the drain, placed neatly on the chair of the scrubber. So I asked Lisa, "Did you do this?" and she responded "Yeah, because somebody hasn't been cleaning the drain top, and there's only one person using the scrubber that could produce that kind of dirt".
I was irritated, because I did not drain the machine yet and she insisted it wasn't me. I tossed the dirt away.
-So I finished scrubbing and started sweeping. Then I saw what Lisa was doing. She was helping a stocker pull expired meat out of the cooler and casually chit-chatting. I went up to her and said "What are you doing? Why are you doing this?", she said "I'm pulling expired meat since I have nothing better to do". I got really irritated and told her the same tone she's been telling me to do shit, to knock out the trash in the break room.
She went to the back and took care of it, only to come back to me and say I was being very rude and disrespectful.
A vein just popped in my brain.

I told myself "you know what? it's obvious talking to her solves nothing".
So I just shut up, and never spoke to her "again".
I told my TL that I'm not having this. Then they told me to avoid Lisa as much as possible and that the other TLs will be aware that I want nothing to do with her, and look at that.
5 months of avoiding direct interactions with her and ignoring her, and things were even more productive! Less stress! Of course she still did her thing every now and then and tried to spite me silently by not doing the trash or tried to get me to talk to her, but it didn't give me an aneurism.
Heck, one of the stock TLs caught her eating chicken at a register while on the clock when he was calling her through the announcements for a big spill. It was funny to hear!!!

Then last month Tom was fired for doing something dumb and now Lisa and I are stuck alone for two days together. My schedule was slightly changed though, so I work with the maintenance TL and a new employee for the other two days with no problems at all.
Today, Lisa was trying to pry me to talk and chit-chat with her and the only thing I told her was "Not after the stuff you've pulled January and before". She's pitching a fit about talking to SM about it but at this point I somewhat just don't care. We also had another new employee btw. Poor guy.
Ofc the whole silent treatment thing is not a great way to go, but for Lisa, it did a lot since all she does is talk.
I like this job very much (not like the fullest because, let's be real, it's Walmart), but it made my life and side job much easier to handle.
I was hoping to wait it out till she retires because she'd always talk about retiring after this year.
What do I even do at this point before I go violence mode or some shit?

TL;DR Have a co-worker who thinks she's top shit, is very dismissive, hypocritically blames ppl for not doing their jobs, got a co-worker to cry, made me silent on her for months, and she's still here despite this book being described to my TL.

Preface:
I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan; I re-read the books typically once a year. I also adore the movies, and find all of Tolkien's legendarium absolutely awesome. Truly one of my favorite hobbies so I'd like to offer some critiques and excitement of flavor gems from Tales of Middle Earth. I won't do every card, but I'll comment on some individual cards and how WOTC did on it. I will comment on the cards abilities but only insofar as it impacts the flavor; i.e. what the card is doing not power level, etc.
To be clear: I understand there are sacrifices you need to make for the greater game, and sometimes those come first. For these articles: I am looking at each card in a vacuum, so if I seem harsh it's because I am using a single lens.

Flavor Preface
Glamdring first appears in the Hobbit and is found in the Troll horde that Thorin and Company unlock (along with Sting, which I'll get to today as well), and another famous blade: Orcrist. These blades were forged by the Elves from the First Age, in Gondolin "before the fall" and were claimed by Gandalf and Thorin respectively. Like all Elvish blades they glow blue when Orcs are near.
But otherwise that's it. Glamdring was a famous blade and was borne by Turgon, the King of Gondolin and was known as the "Beater" or the "Foe-hammer" in the Eldar Days.
Abilities
(sigh) Glamdring didn't have any particularly special abilities. Gandalf wielded the sword well and most famously in his duel with the Balrog, but otherwise the sword was just a sword. I am a little more forgiving here than I am with Anduril because at least they made the abilities flavorful to Gandalf even if it's not flavorful to the sword itself. A sword which lets Gandalf cast spells equal to damage dealt is quite flavorful! I like it a lot.
The Art
I'm sorry but the art is ridiculous. I have no idea who thought swords without a guard was a clever idea but it's both dumb and makes zero sense. The glowing blue is fine because I think this is in Moria where there were plenty of goblins present.

How goes it people? Bringing you today a budget brew of Legolas, Master Archer! Now I loved Orlando Bloom's Legolas in the LotR trilogy (Less so in the Hobbit Prequels) and wanted to make a deck to venerate the Elf that could seemingly handle hundred of enemies.... yet still have a kill count less then a much younger dwarf.
Anyway Legolas starts out as a meager 1/4 for 3 with reach. However every-time he is targeted with a spell by you he gets a +1/+1 counter and everytime you target an opponents creature you get a free "Bite" effect. This makes him wonderful spot removal as "Fight" and "Bite" spells often pump him and kill 2 of your opponents creatures. This makes the build a mix of voltron, control, and spellslinger.
Down side is this deck is completely reliant on the Commander so protecting it is very key as losing it makes building it back up very much a pain.
So deck list is here and I will go over some highlights.
Very light on Creatures with only 5 besides our commander. Guardian Augment and Slippery Bogbonder both grant our commander hexproof. Kami of whispered hopes is a manadork and backup hardened scales effect. Forgotten ancient lets us pump up Legolas. But the real hidden gem for the deck is Greatbow Doyen. This turns all Legolas Bites and Fights into direct damage to opponents. Can easily let him rack up some huge damage and unexpected one shots.
Planeswalkers is just Garruk, Primal hunter mainly for the Draw.
Mana Rocks/Ramp are the fairly generic Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Though Vessel, Wild growth and Utopia Sprawl. You could obviously add more here but with as low to the ground as this deck runs I didn't find it that necessary.
Equipment is usual budget goodstuff. Basilisk Collar, Swiftfoot boots, Loxodon Warhammer. Sword of Vengenance and Belt of Giant Strength are flex slots that probably can be replaced with better equipment as budget allows. Shadowspear in particular would be a great boost to the deck but its price point is beyond what I'm doing for the deck.
Auras we have are mostly to help us draw, with another big boost in Hydra Growth. We also have Concord with the Kami and Season of Growth as enchantments to help keep the cards flowing and Hardened scales to scale up Legolas faster.
Then we get into instants and sorceries unusually for a mono green deck is over 40% of the deck with 33 instants and 8 sorceries. Most of these fall into 3 slots our Fight/bites, Protects, and Draws. For most of these its pick your poison on them as there is a wide selection of them that you should pick based more around what you expect to face. I tend to go for more instant speed Fights/Bites over the cheaper sorcery speed brethren. Protection is a mix of Indestructible and Hexproof or both. And draw is whatever we can find in green.
In lands we have Mostly forest only of note are Detection tower, Tyrite Sanctum, and War Room for obvious reasons.
Welp that wraps it up. I think there might be a few other cards from the LotR set that can fit. I think the is another really good fight/bite spell called Windsomthing slice that looked goods but I can't find anymore. Best of luck to you all and have fun with this. Hi, please help because I’ve already spent a bit of money at the vet and I’d like any other advice or ideas before I bring her back again.
About a month ago, my cat seemed to be shedding like crazy. This is usually normal for her around spring time, as she sheds her winter coat. However, I was finding insane amounts of clumps, and her fur was getting thin. Finally I saw her scratching and pulling fur out in clumps. She has never done anything like this before.
Around the same time, she got a crazy flare up of acne on her chin. Another thing that’s never happened before. The vet shaved the area and gave me wipes for it, and it seemed to get better briefly, but now seemed puffier and worse than ever.
My cat was also prescribed apoquol (spelling?) as the vet thought she might have an allergy. But it’s been a week and she is still pulling fur and the acne is still there.
Ever seen anything like this? She primarily seems to be pulling fur out of her hind legs.

So, now I didn’t have to do my chores again. That was a plus.
And not long after Asahi was gone, I heard my phone buzz and found an incoming call from Celia Norn. “Celia! How are you? Did you grab what I asked for?”
She wasn’t using her human disguise right then, and I tapped on my cheek a few times with one finger until she got the hint.
Celia ‘shifted’ into the body she used last time, then rolled her eyes. “Happy now?” She asked.
“Yes. What if somebody else picked up? Or what if there were people around me?” I asked. “Earth doesn’t know about swappers or any other extraterrestrial life yet.”
Her cheeks turned a little rosy, “Alright, so that’s fair.” She mumbled, “That’s why you’re the best, always thinking about what’s around you and not just what you’re doing.”
“You’re right,” I said, tilting my head back and resting a hand on my chest I agreed, “I am the best. But I’m always happy to help out a colleague, is that what you’re calling about, or did you get what I asked for?”
She huffed, “I don’t always need help, you know. Yes I got what you asked for, and since I finished a job first I wondered…”
I wasn’t going to make her ask. I knew what was coming. So I interrupted her and said in a slightly higher pitch, “Great! So does that mean you’ll be able to take a few days off and hang out here? When was the last time you really even used some of your vacation time? How much do you have built up?”
“A lot.” She acknowledged and pursed her thin lips together. “I just… never had anything I wanted to do before…”
“How about a story about a human swapper and his romantic shenanigans after his father gets him engaged to a bunch of women at once?” I asked.
“Humans have swappers?” She asked.
“No. But that’s what makes this one interesting, he only ‘swaps’ from male to female and back again, but only when he’s splashed with cold or hot water. Shenanigans ensue.” I told her, and for the first time, a little of that anxiety left her eyes.
“I’ll have lots of snacks, of course, I have other things I need to do…” I said, and explained the details of my shifts at Toriyamas’s.
“That’s unfortunate, but this will break a few rules, you know.” She pointed out.
“Meh, not for you.” I gave her a dismissive wave of my hand and looked over at my kitchen where Jin used to often sit and try to study. The last session had been only a few days, really. Barely anything, but I was so used to helping him that it felt strange for him not to stop by after cram and say a few words. I don’t know why, but it just felt wrong to let his mother die on him when he was this age. I’ve seen a lot of people die over the years, from more races in the galaxy than I care to name.
But I never got involved.
I wasn’t supposed to be involved now… but here I was.
Celia shrugged, “If you’re OK with it, but don’t blame me if you get caught.”
“I’d blame only myself if I were that sloppy.” I said after Celia drew my attention back to her before I could fully drift off into my own thoughts. I smiled to show her I was fine, “The people here have some silly superstitions, I’m just going to play into that, and they’ll have one more nonsensical story nobody can verify or debunk, and it’ll be fine. So,” I cleared my throat and shifted gears, “when will you get here?”
“Tomorrow morning.” Celia answered, “I can’t jump as far as you, so it takes a little longer, otherwise I’d be there now.”
“Not a problem, just teleport through my front door when you get here if I don’t answer. I’ll leave directions on how to use my t.v. and microwave, help yourself to my snacks, I’ll be up in the evening.” I promised, and Celia gave a nod at me that bounced her dark hair around behind her.
She scratched her head a little and gave me a quirky look, her lips shifting a little to one side, “You are strange. I think your habit of these vacations has loosened a few screws in your head.”
“Yeah, yeah, don’t overthink it, I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said and wiggled my fingers at her in a wave and hung up.
I briefly considered going to visit Suki in the hospital… but there was no point.
I yawned and went toward my bedroom. “I can’t do anything for her as things are. What good is it to just sit around?” I asked myself, and there was no answer but “None.”
I stripped off my pajamas, closed my eyes, and let myself fall forward into the mattress. I had just enough strength of will to scooch myself on my belly up to the pillow, lift my head, and flop it back down again.
Burrowing under the blankets, I savored that ‘cold’ feeling of mattress and pillow and curled up to savor the slow spread of warmth that would eventually surround me.
Before I slept though, for reasons I wasn’t able to really pin down, I thought of Jin’s mother again, lying alone and hooked up to machines in that awful white room listening to footsteps outside her permanently open door. Nothing to do but lie there and hope to stay unconscious as long as possible.
Jin was a good boy. Too good. ‘He’d leave after visiting hours were over. That’s how he is, always following the rules and trying not to cause trouble for anyone.’
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you I had my own opinions on that way of doing things.
It was chilly in there, last time I visited. The blanket was probably too thin.
She wasn’t shivering, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t uncomfortable.
“Welcome to Shinjai… I run the store on the first floor, since you don’t seem to have much, come by and I’ll let you sign out what you need and just pay me later…” I remembered the way she sounded when she said that. Honestly I did not think anyone could sound that damn…perky to a complete stranger.
I wasn’t the nicest then, either, if I’m being honest.
I sighed into my blanket and got up out of bed. I really wanted to be lazy but… ‘Just a few minutes, in and out. Just drop off a blanket.’ I told myself and threw on a pair of white pajamas, then went to my closet and grabbed a short but thick blue blanket out of the back, it was one she’d let me have when I moved in.
I’d always meant to return it… now was as good a time as any.
Getting there and sneaking in the same as before was as easy as you’d expect. Humans are no match for a magic swapper.
I was still in a hurry though, so I didn’t waste time, my lazy cozy bed was in that ‘perfect comfy’ state and every second I delayed, that perfect comfy state would decline just a little bit more.
“Kayobi… is that… isn’t it after hours?” Suki asked. “I’m sorry, the drugs, it’s like I’m seeing things sometimes…” She tilted her head, she had a thin tube in her throat still and it was definitely slurring her words a bit, her eyes were bleary and unfocused. “I can’t.. I can’t really see well… you look funny, a fuzzy blur… but who else would break the rules…it’s good to see you. Even if you’re not here. Imaginary company… beats none… since I won’t last much longer…for the best… it hurts a lot… I don’t like it… I just want it to stop…”
“No. I’m not Kayobi. Just an angel passing by. Kayobi would never break the rules.” I teased her a little and patted her hand. It was veiny, thin, she’d seemingly aged a hundred years, at least to my eyes. She wasn’t shaking before, but she was now.
“I’m just bringing you a blanket for right now. Sleep well, and before you know it, you’ll be up on your feet again in no time, just like you were when you helped out that silly meddling neighbor of yours who is allegedly none too fond of convention.” I tried to smile at her, but I doubt it would have mattered.
The eye evolved similarly on many worlds, and I’d seen enough people dying to know what that look in their eyes meant. It meant they weren’t seeing much at all, even if she hadn’t told me as much, I’d have figured it out.
I pulled the blanket out from under my arm as I heard the sound of footsteps in the hallway. I shifted my form to that of their traditional angel, and draped the blanket over her, I gave it a quick snap to spread it out wide and let it drift down over her body.
“You will be fine. Just be patient.” I promised and ran my hand over her head just as the doctor and nurse came into view in the doorway.
“Who ar-” Their words cut off at the sight of my big white wings, and I cast my spell of invisibility, sounding the words out slowly so I would ‘fade’ rather than simply snap out of view. Then I stepped out of the way to let them rush to where I stood, and covered my mouth to keep back my laughter at their consternation and confusion.
The chaos I caused was…pretty damn funny, if you ask me. Suki wasn’t able to say much, just that an angel came by and told her she’d be fine. Those who saw me, believed, those who didn’t, called it a delusion, only for the first group to point out the blanket and ask the second group where it had come from.
I left after a few minutes, I mean confusion can only be so funny for so long, and I was about to bust my gut laughing at them anyway, so I returned to my little apartment again, resumed my human shape, and fell back into bed.
Only then did I let my laughter out in long peels, kicking and thrashing as I cackled away at my mischief making magic, until I was finally ready to sleep.
And when I did, wouldn’t you know it? That ‘perfect comfy’ was somehow better.

Been playing this deck for about a month on Cockatrice, made some cuts along the way to get to this point. Probably high power, Beledros is too expensive for cedh. & no budget, I am an advocate for proxies.
Looking for cuts and maybe some other unique combos/synergies to play in this deck. Anything non [[Witherbloom Apprentice]] + [[Chain of Smog]]. I feel like the deck struggles with protection/interaction often. Cheap wipes like [[Pernicious Deed]] and [[Gaze of Granite]] are relied on heavily and [[Dosan, The Falling Leaf]] is my only real protection for spells, even though it is a catch-all. The synergy in the deck feels great though.

Gameplan
While not hard to get to in this deck, [[Beledros Witherbloom]] at 7 mana is a roadblock. It also not being a wincon in your command zone for 7 mana also matters.
Early game - I'm looking for [[Ramunap Excavator]] [[Summer Bloom]] [[Azusa, Lost But Seeking]] [[Life From The Loam]] [[Rings of Brighthearth]] to flood my board with lands.
Mid game - we're playing Beledros and finding [[Stinging Study]] [[Ad Nauseam]] for some cards, and using our mass removal/spot removal to interact with the table. Honestly thinking about adding more stax here.
Late game - I'm looking for [[Dosan, The Falling Leaf]] and a combo. This could be as simple as having Beledros on the field + Rings of Brighthearth and doubling your untap into a [[Torment of Hailfire]]

[[Hoarding Broodlord]]/[[Razaketh, The Foulblooded]] = Find your combo and win. [[Sacrifice]] into [[Peer into the Abyss]] is featured often.
[[Peer Into The Abyss]] = Draw the cards yourself or kill a player or two with [[Orcish Bowmasters]]. [[Necropotence]] + [[Emergence Zone]] has similar effects.
[[Glacial Chasm]] = I'm looking for this card a lot. [[Crop Rotation]] or [[Expedition Map]] is your best friend.
Cards maybe on the block:
[[Dosan, The Falling Leaf]] I want cheaper protection but Dosan is actually a great catch-all. 3-5 extra mana on the winning turn isn't crazy to ask for with this deck. But I wish it was cheaper, [[Defense Grid]] is an option but I can't tutor for it. [[Allosaurus Shepherd]] is cool but a lot of the game winning spells are black. [[Veil of Summer]] is great too but Dosan covers more and is a creature, easier to tutor for.
[[Ugin, The Spirit Dragon]] Hard to find exile removal in G/B. This does a little more than exile mass removal and can win off of the ultimate. Colorless is easy to cast, but 8 is expensive. Still feel great about the card, and I can get it back with [[Takenuma, Abandoned Mire]] in our [[Life From The Loam]] package.
[[Squirrel Nest]] A card that I hate drawing sometimes but love having in my deck. Not bad with [[Skullclamp]] but the card becomes [[Force of Vigor]] fodder or [[Gaea's Cradle]] mana most of the time. Smooth combo with [[Earthcraft]] and [[The Meathook Massacre]].
Lands = 36 + [[Dryad Arbor]] feels like a good number, but maybe if the cmc goes lower I can cut lands. The amount of basics is needed for [[earthcraft]] [[kodama's reach]] [[cultivate]].
[[Lotus Vale]] Dangerous game to play here. However, it feels great drawing this with Razaketh/Hoarding Broodlord/Necropotence and not enough black mana or with a [[Deserted temple]]. [[Scorched Ruins]] is a combo card too.

I'm a 35 year bloke who has a few close friends locally, but due to adulthood doesn't always get as much socialising in as he should, so looking for other folks to chat to!
I'm due to be a first time Dad in September. As part of the pregnancy support I've been given a few bits, but it's honestly not a lot. One of the suggestions was to download Dadapp, which I did aaaaand.... I'm in a complete deadzone for support. Literally the only thing it suggested to me was Andy's Man Club - which I'm not knocking, great group - but I was expecting something a bit more Dad specific. Not saying I need support, but it's never bad to be surrounded be people in the same boat as you in life.
I've put UK in the title, however I'm happy to chat with people in the same timezones. I'm also quite keen on text chatting (I only tend to hop into voice chat when pre-arranged whereas text I can pickup at breaks in work and such, probably a by product of growing up with MSN Messenger!), so if we do anything like turn-based gaming, I'm also not against friends from further away communicating in that way.
I like small, tight-knit groups, so I'm ideally looking for maybe 3-4 people, as this also fits a lot of games too. I'm not interested in massive Discord servers - I mention this because I always seem to get at least one message from someone trying to get me to do an interview for their Discord server, which feels unnecessary, uncomfortable, and not really how I tend to start actual friendships. Feels more like an induction to me. I'm also not great in giant groups, I prefer smaller, more focused groups.

I play all of them casually, so sorry I can't be your 4th elite team member in PUBG, not least because I've accidentally died getting out of the vehicle at speed more times that I'd like to admit.
I have 1800+ games on Steam, so the above is by no means exhaustive or even fully representative of my interests. Previous games I’ve been sucked into include Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, Vermintide, Unreal Tournament… the list goes on. I also have an active interest in retro gaming and use RetroArch/RetroAchievements a lot.
I don't tend to buy a lot of new games as most of my spare change goes in babyfund now, but I am subscribed to the Humble Monthly and do occaisionally pick up dirt cheap deals.
Outside of gaming, my other hobbies are:

• Running, both road and cross country
• Board gaming - just attended the UK Games Expo, although I generally gravitate towards more lightweight abstract games (Tsuro, Deep Sea Adventure, Skull)
• Miniature painting
• Skirmish wargaming (currently playing Burrows & Badgers)

I mostly use Steam for gaming, and Discord for chatting. I'd be looking for probably one evening a week, maybe sometimes two. Ideally you'll be similar to me - this'll be something to do one night after work to unwind, and have a chat and a laugh. No egos, no tryhards. I have a Discord area if needed, it's tiny and pretty much only used for idle chat and arranging Blood Bowl tournaments.

Passive: With Age Comes Experience

Birk starts every game at Lvl 0 instead of Lvl 1 (Still unlocks basic abilities at Lvls 1, 2, & 3, but not ult at Lvl 6). Birk gains XP equal to 10% of pre-mitigation damage from all sources he deals to champs, structures, & non-small monsters (Reduced by half for monsters), affected by shared XP at 25% effectiveness. His level is uncapped (Can go beyond 18), but any systematic mechanic (Runes, Items, Spells, etc) besides XP gain have their per lvl effectiveness reduced by half for him (But are also uncapped, except for CDs, which will always be their Lvl 18 CD regardless of lvl) (At Lvl 0, it is also reduced equal to the amount he would gain per lvl)
When Birk levels up, his yo-yo glows, causing his next basic ability to stun enemies hit for 1s
Birk doesn’t unlock his ult at any lvl, instead can buy a unique “scroll” while in fountain (Via a unique menu) to unlock the ult the scroll gives. Main scrolls are the ults themselves & cost 1500G each, while sub scrolls are add-ons that give additional effects to the ults & cost 500G each. Scrolls of any kind don’t sit in item slots & are considered passive, but can be sold like other items, but for full value. Selling a main scroll will also sell all its sub scrolls (Besides land scrolls)
NOTE Scrolls (Besides Land Scroll) each count as a legendary item for use with Mythic Passives
NOTE All players can see his XP amount beneath his mana
NOTE In game modes where players start at Lvl 3, Birk starts at Lvl 3 as well

Q: Yin Yang Slash

Birk swings his yo-yo in a 0u (+100% Atk Range) radius around him, dealing 100% AD (+35% AP) physical damage to all enemies hit, applying on-attack & on-hit effects at 100% effectiveness

W: Spiral Stance

Birk becomes unstoppable but unable to basic attack or cast abilities (Besides E) for 1.5s, during which he has a 10% (+1% (+1% per 100 Bonus ArmoM Resist) per 100 Bonus Health) Base Health Shield. Afterwhich, he strikes his yo-yo at the lowest % health enemy (Always prioritizing champs>monsters>minions when possible) within 0u (+200% Atk Range) of him, dealing 100% AD (+35% AP) physical damage
Cooldown: 10 (On activation)
Cost: 50
NOTE Strike animation is reduced by bonus attack speed
NOTE Can apply either of Calm of the Quick’s enhanced attack effects to all enemies hit

E: Calm of the Quick

Birk dashes 0u (+100% Atk Range) in a target direction & empowers his next 2 attacks within 5s. The 1st attack slows the enemy by 50% for 1s, the 2nd attack deals 150% total damage (Including rune/item effects such as Electrocute, Grasp, Sheen, etc)
Cooldown: 10 (On activation)
Cost: 50
NOTE Dash Speed is equal to 500% Total Move Speed
NOTE The 2nd attack is what will apply the stun from “With age comes experience”

R: The Scroll

Uses the ultimate you gain from your main scroll
Cooldown: 210 (On Activation)
Cost: 100
NOTE Sylas can only target Birk with Hijack if Birk has a main scroll

Land Scroll Neither a main scroll nor a sub scroll. Costs 20G each, can be bought infinitely (Unlike main & sub-scrolls) regardless of what other scrolls you have, & grants +1 Ultimate Haste per land scroll you have
MAIN SCROLL Resting Strike: Birk launches his yo-yo in a target direction, stopping on the 1st enemy champ hit to deal 0 (+1% AD/0.35% AP per 1% of target’s missing health) physical damage to them. This can be tapped or held (For up to 5s) to affect the range, & while charging, Birk’s slowed by 50%. When tapped, the max range is 100% of Birk’s atk range. When held for at least 0.5s, the range is increased to 200 - 500% (Based on hold time, from 0.5s to 2.5s) of Birk’s atk range
SUB SCROLL Form: If the affected enemy dies within 0.5s of being hit by this, Birk can recast this within 10s for the same effect at no mana cost
SUB SCROLL Precision: If the affected enemy would be left below 15% of their max health after this, they’re executed
SUB SCROLL Meditate: After the damage is dealt, Birk restores 0 (+500% AD, +175% AP) health over the next 5s. If the affected enemy dies within 0.5s of being hit by this, he also becomes invisible for the 1st 1.5s
MAIN SCROLL Quake of the Lands: Target a location within 0u (+250% Atk Range) of Birk. After a 1.5s channel (After 1s he vanishes & is untargetable), Birk arrives at target location & creates a 0u (+100% Atk Range) shockwave around him, dealing 0 (+0.25% AD/0.1% AP per 1% of enemy current health) physical damage to enemies hit & stunning them for 1.5s
SUB SCROLL Winds: This stun is increased from 1.5s to 2s & additionally knocks up enemies hit for 2s
SUB SCROLL Motivation: Enemies hit by the shockwave are marked for the next 5s. Allied champs (Including Birk) that damage marked enemies restore health equal to 25% of the post-mitigation damage dealt
SUB SCROLL Defense: For the next 5s, Birk gains 0 (+100% AD, +10% Bonus Health) Bonus Armor & M Resist for each enemy he hits with the shockwave
MAIN SCROLL Challenger: Target a location within 0u (+500% Atk Range) of Birk. After 2.5s, then within the next 5s (If there is no recast, this goes on a 10s CD), he can recast on a target enemy champ within 0u (+100% Atk Range) of him to strike his yo-yo into them, dealing 0 (+0.25% AD/0.1% AP per 1% of enemy’s current health) physical damage to them & suppressing them for 0.5s before both of them blink to the initial target location (Birk is at the target location, while the enemy is 75% of Birk’s Atk Range away from him in the opposite direction)
SUB SCROLL Return: If the target dies within 10s of the 2nd cast, this can be cast a 3rd time within the 10s duration to blink back to the original cast location
SUB SCROLL Cripple: For the next 2.5s, the target’s grounded & Birk steals 10% of their move speed
SUB SCROLL Purloin: For the next 10s, Birk reduce’s the target's AP, AD, Atk Speed, Armor, & M Resist by a % amount, gaining Lifesteal for himself equal to 10% of the total reduced stats for the same duration
