The Advanced IOP Measurement Used in One of the World's Largest and Most Prestigious Health Databases, the UK Biobank
2023.06.10 06:39 FitEyes The Advanced IOP Measurement Used in One of the World's Largest and Most Prestigious Health Databases, the UK Biobank
If you are a glaucoma suspect or living with glaucoma, are you aware of your intraocular pressure (IOP) values? As we all know, IOP is central to glaucoma management.
At the 2023 Glaucoma Think Tank, respected glaucoma researcher Dr. Anthony Khawaja presented an insightful talk titled "Lessons Learned About Glaucoma from the UK Biobank."
The UK Biobank is a significant and unique resource containing a comprehensive collection of health data and biological samples from half a million participants. It serves as a valuable asset for advancing our understanding of diseases, genetics, and lifestyle factors that impact health. Crucially, and unlike many general health databases, it includes very good ophthalmology data.
In his presentation, Dr. Khawaja focused on the importance of reliable intraocular pressure (IOP) data in glaucoma research and highlighted the Reichert Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) as an advanced non-contact tonometer.
The ORA is an important development in IOP measurement. Unlike traditional tonometers, the ORA considers corneal biomechanics, allowing for a more accurate measurement of IOP through a result known as
IOPcc.
In addition, the ORA measures corneal hysteresis (CH), reflecting the cornea's viscoelastic properties. By taking into account corneal biomechanics, the ORA improves the precision of IOP measurements, which supports more effective clinical decision-making and glaucoma management.
Dr. Khawaja emphasized the significance of the IOPcc measurement provided by the ORA, stating,
“I and many other people believe it to be the best measurement of IOP we currently have, because it reduces corneal artifacts.” For further information on this topic, and why, as a person living with glaucoma, you should know your IOPcc numbers, see the related post:
Why You Should Ask Your Doctor About Corneal Hysteresis (CH) At Your Next Eye Exam : AskGlaucoma Dr. Khawaja epitomizes the forefront of contemporary glaucoma research by critically reassessing and moving beyond the dated presumption that the Goldmann tonometer holds any semblance of a gold standard.

2023.06.10 06:34 _ravioli_buster_ Feel as if my doctor berated me for my weight.
Hi, for the better part of 2 years now l've been taking care of my mental health and taking sertraline. It has worked tremendously well for my overall mental health improvement, I have accomplished so many personal achievements since taking it, anyways i digress. The other day I had an appointment regarding starting up my prescription again due to me running out. Now the clinic that I go to recently got a new doctor, no biggie.
I got checked in like usual and went into a room to meet my dr and go over my current prescription. Now heres the thing I am a fairly large woman, I have always struggled with my weight and have gone through many ED's ones where I've lost 60 pounds in 3 months and ones where I've gained weight equally as rapidly.
From the immediate get-go my dr made it seem like my main and overall reason for the appointment was for my weight and yes I am unhealthy in the weight sense and I have considered talking to my dr about it but that appointment was for my depression/anxiety meds.
I know she is a doctor and wants the best for her patients but it would be one thing if she mentioned it once but she kept going about it from beginning to end. She even asked me about counseling and how if I can't afford that, that church was also a good idea.
She also made some very what I consider "out of pocket comments". In our small talk I mentioned how I am getting my ged and thinking of going to college to be a teacher. As she looked at my weight chart she asked me "now what are we going to do about this weight, because with this weight you are not going to be a teacher.
This is the comment that broke me, after many degrading comments this one hit hard I am a high school dropout and I have struggled with my education immensely and hope to in the future help other struggling young students, It felt like a personal dig at me.
I was already feeling super emotional as I had gone a couple weeks without a refill on my sertraline and I started to cry after that comment. We talked about my weight more and she left the room and when she came back she had brought me a sample bottle of weight loss medication. I did some blood work to check my thyroid and shortly left to pick up my prescriptions.
The doctor was overall profesional and kept a "cordial" tone but I left feeling absolutely terrible about myself.I've struggled with my weight all my life and although I am not happy at all about my current weight, it does not negatively impact my mental health to the extreme that it once did.
I have considered talking to my dr about weight loss medication or just overall health advice but I planned to do that on my own time in it's own appointment that didn't involve my mental health. I have also been thinking of the fact how I went there as my mental health was doing bad, this situation could've easily brought me or any other person in a similar position over the edge.
I'm left feeling conflicted about the overall situation, I understand my doctor was just fulfilling her job and making sure her patients are healthy but after talking to family and friends about the situation they seemed extremely offended and livid for me.
Has anyone ever been in a Similar situation? How would you have felt in my shoes?

The world's second-largest economy has become one of the biggest markets for big-budget Hollywood films, but a racially-charged backlash against Disney's The Little Mermaid is just the latest example of the price film studios can pay if they offend Chinese sensibilities.
While China does not have the same racial history or politics as the US, audiences are still sensitive to how race is portrayed in Hollywood films, said Chinese-born YouTuber Yao Zhang, who follows Chinese and Taiwanese news and culture from Canada.
Amid the negative press, The Little Mermaid has performed poorly at the Chinese box office, earning just $3.6m in the 10 days after its May 26 release, according to Artisan Gateway, an international film advisory.
The Little Mermaid's flop is just the latest example of how difficult it has become for Hollywood to navigate one of the world's largest and most lucrative theatrical film markets, which once had an insatiable appetite for US films.
Only 39 foreign films were released in 2023 as of May, including 18 Hollywood titles.
Disney's 1998 animated film Mulan was famously delayed in China following the studio's backing of another film, Kundun, about the Dalai Lama, said Chris Fenton, a former Hollywood executive and author of Feeding the Dragon: Inside the Trillion Dollar Dilemma Facing Hollywood, the NBA, & American Business.

Rebels from the Islamist Al-Shabaab group were attacking a hotel in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Friday, the government and witnesses said.
Attackers targeted a hotel at a beach often visited by officials, according to a government statement.
Al-Shabaab, which has been waging an insurgency against the internationally backed federal government for more than 15 years, claimed responsibility for the attack.
The rebels, affiliated with Al-Qaeda, launched a large-scale attack against a hotel at Lido beach in 2020, killing 10 civilians and a police officer.
His pledge came after 21 people were killed and 117 others were wounded in an Al-Shabaab siege on a Mogadishu hotel in August 2022 that lasted 30 hours.
In October 2022, twin car bombings in Mogadishu killed 121 people and injured 333, in the country's deadliest attack in five years.

2023.06.10 05:02 Hot-Loan-4485 Unexpectedly failed a urine drug test for a college internship, putting the internship at risk. Next steps?
First of all I appreciate anyone willing to take the time to help out.
I unexpectedly had a positive urine sample for opiates, which is at the lab now to confirm or deny. I’m awaiting the lab results.
This is an unexpected false-positive. I’ve never had an opiate drug in my life, the only thing I can think of that would’ve caused this is the poppy-seeded bread I ate the night before. It was 1 sandwich with bread that had poppyseeds in it (I didn’t know beforehand that poppyseeds can lead to this). I also took a Cetirizine allergy pill the morning of the test.
The doctor insisted that poppy seeds would never cause a false positive and that those would’ve indicated THC, not opiates. The company’s policy is that re-tests aren’t allowed.
I really need this internship both for experience and for income during this summer before my last year of college. I’m really concerned and frustrated that the lab test might come back positive. If so, are there any recommended next steps that anyone could share? The doctor briefly mentioned going to HR to plead my case. I’m just not sure what to do here.
TL;DR - Important internship gave a urine test, was a false-positive for opiates. Ate poppyseeds the night before. If the lab concludes that it’s indeed positive for opiates, what next steps can I take despite the company’s no re-test policy?
Any advice is greatly appreciated

High levels of harmful organic fluorine compounds were found in blood samples of residents living in the Tama area of western Tokyo.
The Tokyo metropolitan government has suspended water intake at 40 wells in seven cities where high concentrations of PFAS were found.
The metropolitan government in 2019 conducted a survey on PFOS and PFOA in the Tama area.
The citizen group solicited volunteers for blood tests across the Tama area, and 650 people aged 19 to 92 took part.
According to the group, the combined amount of PFOS and PFOA contained in 1 milliliter of blood averaged 14.6 nanograms.
In Okinawa Prefecture, a citizens group last year tested blood samples of 387 residents living near U.S. bases and found the levels of PFOS and PFOA were 0.8 to 3.1 times the national average.

2023.06.10 02:32 BioShockerInfinite Right & Left Brain Hemispheres
I recently read ‘The Master And His Emissary’ by Dr. Iain McGilchrist. I found the book surprising, informative, and extremely enlightening. It is a very well researched book on the nature of how our right and left hemispheres attend to reality and how that unbalanced relationship is causing problems in the modern world.
I’ve been on a journey over the last two years to come to terms with a diagnosis of giftedness and ADHD. There was a lot in this book that helped me to reevaluate my life and I found the insights within to be extremely helpful.
I have been struggling with an almost overpowering sense of drive to “make my mark.” There has been a real sense that I have wasted a lot of time because I received my diagnosis in middle age.
After reading the book I feel like that pressure has been released- that the pressure to “achieve” has been replaced with a curiosity to “experience.”
I have this feeling that gifted people who find themselves to be struggling may actually be in a situation where they are doubling down with regards to relying on their left hemisphere to attend to life. They may have exceptionally strong abilities to perform in the world and attend to it’s parts. For example, they may put their self worth in their ability to code or they may worry about the small details like what grades they are getting at school. Meanwhile they should be taking a step back to appreciate the forest of life rather than the trees. To paraphrase Chris Knight from ‘Real Genius’, the recipe for a mental breakdown is “all science, no philosphy.”
I have a feeling that most gifted people may actually have a “gift” to embrace the way their right hemisphere attends reality in a unique and ampified way that may provide real meaning in their lives. The sense of discord that some gifted people experience is potentially stronger then it normally would be because they are allowing the emissary to lead instead of the master. However, the differential of potential between the left and right hemispheres may be greater than it is for the average person and this is creating a greater sense of discord when alignment is off.
I highly recommend the book and if you are interested in learning more about Dr. Iain McGilchrist I recommend checking out his youtube channel. He also has a new Three volume book out called ‘The Matter With Things.’

2023.06.10 01:00 Evan_Veet Playoff Stats Deep Dive: Pre-Masters Tokyo
With Master’s Tokyo on the way, I felt like it was the perfect time to revisit something I’ve been very interested in for a while now, and something that gets underrated by many fans in the Valorant community, playoff performance. Similar to how the NBA operates, Valorant has many stars that shine bright in regular season games, but struggle when it matters most (I’m looking at you Joel Embiid).
For this post, I’ve compiled data dating back to Stage 2 Reykjavik in 2021 and took the stats from playoffs of every LAN since then. I defined playoffs as past group stage for every LAN but Lock In and Reykjavik, where I choose to use the games from the last 8 remaining teams. This is why you won’t see stats for players from EDG or Furia, as they have made LANs but never advanced to playoffs.
Methodology: As previously stated I was only looking at playoff stats, how players play against the top 8 teams in the world at the time. Now I am a man with a job and other social responsibilities, so the statistics are not in-depth, and that’s why I will make a disclaimer right here. This is not a perfect representation of player skill and I am not claiming that my results are gospel, I’m simply having fun and compiling data about my favorite game. Now for how I collected it…
I took the rating from every game of every player of every match played in playoffs. 44190 rounds over 77 games played over 7 LANs. The metric I used was VLR rating, as that is the most accessible site to navigate and the most general stat you can find to correlate player skill. As I said in my disclaimer, this is not a perfect rating, if I was doing something like baseball it would be very easy with something like Wins Above Replacement(WAR), but Valorant doesn’t have that. For now, this will have to do. From there, I took every game that a player played and averaged it out. For players like the old Guild roster(excluding Leo because of his FNC run) it was as simple as averaging two different games and coming up with a number. For a team like the Optic core, however, it was a 17-game average. In general, using map vs overall game averages had little effect apart from maybe a .01-03 rating difference, and I for sure do not have enough time to go through literally every map. I will also be using 200 rounds as the cutoff point for all of my data, as that includes the G2 core of Avova Nukkye and Mixwell who have been to two playoffs and cuts off Kryptix and V1 who only played once over 2 years ago. Thus…. Onto the data.
The Data: TL:DR Links
This spreadsheet can summarize all that I am saying. It has data of every player ever and sorts out different categories I will talk about.
First things first: The best of the best
Of all players with 200 or more rounds played, the best-rated playoff player is….
TENZ With a 1.27 rating over 249 rounds, the Sentinels star duelist is the best performer by .2 points and it’s not too much of a surprise. Tenz has played in 2 playoffs, Stage 2 and 3 of 2021, and amassed 244 kills in 249 rounds over that span. Obviously, his Stage 3 was much worse than his Stage 2, but with the best performance ever at a LAN, it makes sense that he’s at number one.
As for players with over 400 rounds, and who I would truly crown the king of playoff games it's…
CHRONICLE With an insane 1.25 rating and 620 rounds played, Chronicle is by far the most consistently good player when it matters most. He’s my personal pick for GOAT of the game, and it makes sense why. The only player with 2 championships and one of only 4 to go to three grand finals. Chronicle has done it playing nine different agents across every role, most notably with his Sova, Brim, and Viper. The best flex in the world will be playing in Tokyo with a chance to bolster his crazy numbers even more.
The next two players are probably no surprise, as
NATS and
YAY round out the top 4. Both considered to be the two best players during their year of terror, Nats boasts a 1.21 rating with Yay at a 1.18. Yay also is tied with Marved for 4th most rounds of all time, only behind the Optic trio that stayed with NRG and played in Lock In “playoffs”. Both are in contention for the highest individual peaks of all time alongside the two ahead of him.
Rounding out the top 10 is:
Scream (1.18)
Leo (1.17)
Sacy (1.15)
Shahzam (1.15)
Cryo (1.14)
Shao, Cned, and Sick tied at (1.12)
Shaz is the only IGL on this list, and surprisingly not a single smokes player is in the top 10, with Mako being the closest at 15th. Duelist and Sova players by far reign supreme, as they account for 10/12 players I listed.
Now for the not so good, the worst performers in the playoffs. With over 200+ rounds the worst performer was…
DELZ1K The former KRU controller has an abysmal .79 rating over 222 rounds. The sample size is small with only one large showing in a tournament at Champions 2021, but the now free agent was the only player with an under .8 rating. For context, that is nearly the same rating as dephh in 2023.
Of players with over 400 rounds, #1 is
ANGE1, but it is kind of unfair since he is an IGL, so of non-IGLs the worst is…
RB Maybe a surprise to many, but the Korean flex has been awful when it matters most. Boasting 895 rounds played, tied for 9th most, he has a .85 rating, by far the lowest with Jamppi at .93 being the closest non-igl with >400 rounds. He’s someone that’s consistently in the conversation for top 3 flex player, but I’m not sure that’s merited when he’s .12 rating points lower than his closest teammate and IGL.
Some other notable names include:
Ange1 (.8)
FNS (.83)
Shyy (.86)
BcJ and Zekken (.93)
Masters Tokyo The top 10 players going into Masters Tokyo are
- FNC Chronicle 1.25
- TL Nats 1.21
- FNC Leo 1.17
- FNC Derke 1.12
- NAVI Shao 1.12
- NAVI Cned 1.12
- LOUD Aspas 1.11
- DRX Mako 1.1
- PRX F0rsaken 1.09
- LOUD Less/NAVI Suygestu 1.08
TL Sayf additionally has a 1.3 rating from his time with Guild but with just 100 rounds he doesn’t meet the criteria
The bottom 10 players are
- NAVI Ange1 .8
- NRG FNS .83
- DRX Rb .85
- TL Jamppi .93
- LOUD Saadhak .94
- TL Soulcas .96
- DRX Stax .97
- NRG Victor .97
- DRX Buzz .98
- NRG Crashies .99
Some surprising names on this list but only 31/60 players have over 200 rounds that are going to Masters Tokyo, so this list features many familiar faces, most surprisingly the NRG duo as well as Buzz.
Ethan at .9 with 108 rounds and s0m at .97 with 78 rounds would also be here.
Teams at Tokyo On average, the highest-rated team at Tokyo is unsurprisingly Fnatic with a crazy 1.13 avg playoff rating. Liquid comes in at second with a 1.09, likely boosted by prime Nats and Sayf’s low rounds. FUT, EG, EDG, and ASE don’t have enough players to rate, so NRG is the lowest-rated team with an average rating of .97. DRX comes in at second with .98
The most experienced team is NRG with 4175 rounds combined, with DRX and FNC both barely eclipsing 3500 in 2nd and 3rd place. FUT, EDG, and ASE have 0 combined, and EG and T1 both have under 200. By far the most inexperienced 5 teams at the event, with PRX coming in 6th with 1812 rounds.
The best playoff performers not at Tokyo are:
- Tenz
- Yay
- Scream
- Sacy
- Shahzam
Sacy, Scream and Tenz could all technically make Champions with upset LCQ runs.
Overall Takeaways: Rb is one of the worst playoff performers and is an anomaly among players that have as much play time as him.
TL, FNC, and NAVI have three of the most talented rosters of all time on paper, all in the same region.
Peak SEN was extremely talented, as was GMB, but only playing 2 LAN playoffs as teams means it’s impossible to truly know how good they could’ve been.
Optic core is definitely hurt by the sheer rounds they’ve played. Marved, Crashies, and Victor all have surprisingly low numbers, but it’s likely because they play so much more than anyone else that their stats regress to a more general mean.
Scream is probably one of the more underrated individuals, and it's a shame this is where his career has gone. Consistently amazing at LAN but has never really had the collection of 5 or an IGL to work with him.
Though not mentioned in this post, D3ffo’s 1.11 ACS in playoffs is crazy, especially considering he was putting up <1 rating during EMEA league play
Conclusion: So WTF was the point of all of this work?
Well… I don’t really know. It’s not perfect data, but it does give a general idea of some key things to look out for in Tokyo. I think some players are personally very overrated, and some don’t get the respect they deserve when it comes to LAN performances, and this practice did give me some clarity on certain individuals.
Either way, it was a fun exercise and hopefully you’ve at least skimmed through a lot of this. I truly suggest you at least check out
this spreadsheet because it shows literally 139 players' worth of data, so your favorite player is likely on this. It also shows some things I didn’t bring up because this is already an essay, like each role at Tokyo and player comparisons. In general, I really like posts like these and hope to see more of them as Tokyo is happening as statistical analysis in Valorant is still very minimal, and this really basic post hopefully makes some people interested.
If you have any questions about literally anything on this post, from a singular player u want to know about to my methodology I’ll try to respond to comments.

I’m a 26 year old male. I have GERD, dermatographia, asthma, slight NAFLD, and low iron. Does the high SM/RNP AB mean anything ? The normal high range is 0.9 according to MyChart. My Dr is not available to reach at the moment and I’m kind of freaking out. Thanks in advance !

2023.06.10 00:11 autotldr Kurti points finger at West: Emissaries come to us with Serbia’s demands
This is the best tl;dr I could make,
original reduced by 60%. (I'm a bot)
Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti complained about the unfairness towards his state by the United States and the European Union, as well as the tolerance towards what he described as "The authoritarian regime of Serbia".
In Leposavić, Zvečan, and Zubin Potok - municipalities in northern Kosovo with a Serbian majority - the security situation has worsened since May 26th, when Albanian mayors officially took office despite resistance from local residents.
The US and the EU have presented three requests to Kosovo: calming the situation in the north, holding new elections in the four northern municipalities, and resuming the dialogue for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
Kurti insisted that the presence of special units of the Kosovo Police in the three municipalities in the north would not be reduced unless the "Serbian criminal gangs" either leave or are arrested.
Kurti complained that even for the April elections in the four municipalities in northern Kosovo with a Serbian majority, "International intermediaries, European intermediaries failed" to help Kosovo.
Kosovo's President Vjosa Osmani has also stated that new elections in the four northern municipalities can be held.

2023.06.09 23:31 hissesatyou week 2
I started taking Qelbree (200mg) coming up on two weeks ago since my therapist mentioned alternatives to take with the Adzenys (12.5mg) to push for more of a balance. Additionally, at the same time I started taking Ashwaghanda to help with anxiety and focus as well not every day but pretty frequently with the Qelbree and Adzenys.
Within the first 3 days I started getting like extreme headaches that wouldn’t go away even after eating, water, and ibuprofen and it was pretty terrible in the night/early morning. Pushing through, the headaches seemed to decrease if I ate regularly or if I had one, eat and it would start to go away. But Im starting to feel that it’s not worth it. With Adzeny’s I felt great with managing my adhd symptoms and didnt rly have any negative side effects from them. Now I feel like I have more issues than I did before like easily annoyed/angered, the headaches, nausea, and a weird lump in my throat.
However, I do see a slight difference since taking the Qelbree. I didn’t really notice until I came on here, but my brain is like—quiet. When I realized that the weird uncomfortable feeling was literally just my brain working as if it was neurotypical. I don’t have as many rambling thoughts that eventually lead to anxiety and overthinking, that’s not really there anymore.
I think that this even brought me some clarity with how to continue. My dr. gave me a sample pack which is 3, 7 pill bottles and I’m ab to move onto the 3rd. I’ll finish the sample and hope that the headaches go away and maybe I’ll be able to then decrease my stimulant dose and utilize combo therapy moving forward.
Does anyone else take Ashwaghanda? Any advice on when and how to best utilize it? I hope that it starts getting easier because I think if the side effects stop, itll be worth taking a cocktail of meds.

2023.06.09 23:31 Killer0nTheRoad Picked up Weird Al's first album today
| This is stupid rare, there's a whole Wikipedia page for this album, the story goes: in 1981 Al borrowed money from Dr. Demento to fund the pressing of 1000 copies of this record, it was then distributed to LA area record stores and sold on consignment, and now 42 years later who knows how many are left, the last two sold on eBay for around $500. submitted by Killer0nTheRoad to vinyl [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 23:15 beefyweefles Playing around with l. reuteri
I've been using l. reuteri for a while now in various ways and the results are kind of mixed. The Ojetti et. al. paper provides evidence that the Protectis strain of l. reuteri can mitigate or even eradicate breath methane, presumably by causing a significant shift in the number of archaea in the gut.
So far I've tried:
- Gatrus chewables
- Dr. Davis yogurt method, culturing both gastrus and protectis
- Protectis chewables
- a few other probiotics that contained various strains of l. reuteri (not gastrus/protectis)
- Protectis capsules
Keep in mind that the Ojetti paper showed methane mitigation with the Protectis strain, taken twice a day, 30 minutes after a meal! The specific strain is very important because if there's anything I've learned from researching the gut microbiome and microbes:
strain matters!
I've had sustained high methane for a while, and the Dr. Davis yogurt seems to increase fermentation. I don't understand why but he does indicate this in his writing that he observed that breath emissions do in fact increase while consuming the yogurt. The fact that the yogurt should be delivering high levels of bacteria seems to not matter in terms of shifting the activity of methanogens. Perhaps a certain high level of l. reuteri produces too much hydrogen and allows archaea to survive the otherwise unfavorable condition that the bacteria produces as observed in the study.
It hasn't been until I take the BioGaia Protectis
capsules that things seem to be trending down. I've only been taking them a few days but I'll update if I see better results as time goes on.
I think there may be good reason to recommend methane dominant people to take BioGaia Protectis capsules instead of anything else. Don't be fooled, the product is marketed to nursing mothers (pink box) but I expect that capsules are better than chewables in terms of delivering the bacteria directly to the gut.

MILAN - Italian special forces have regained control of a Turkish ship that had been attacked by armed stowaways off the southern city of Naples, Italy's defense minister told state television on Friday.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto said the operation was still underway and that Italian forces were securing the safety of the 22 crew members aboard the "Galeta Seaways," while rounding up the stowaways.
The special forces lowered themselves onto the Turkish ship from two helicopters in the dramatic operation to free crew held by about 15 stowaways, two or three armed with sharp objects, Crosetto said.
The stowaways moved to take control of the cargo ship that was en route to France after being discovered, but the captain was able to sound an alarm.
Italian custom patrol boats blocked the Turkish ship, while the special forces boarded, Crosetto said.
Some of the stowaways continued to elude capture, Crosetto said.
