2023.06.08 06:57 Careful_Face_6622 First time in Cebu

Hi! We're planning to visit Cebu on November (2 adults, 2 kids ages 7 and 2).
Can you recommend activities suitable for kids? I've read posts that north and south cebu are totally beach gems but I'm worried that kids will have a hard time with long land travel. We've been to Bohol and Boracay and they definitely loved the beach, plus my 7 year old loves Snorkeling.
Can you also recommend hotel/resort if ever we stay in Mactan? Is the beach as good as other beaches in Cebu
Thanks in advance!

2023.06.08 06:12 Crazy-Package-4737 Post graduation road-trip help

Hi everyone. I am moving to Seattle for a full time position after graduating college and decided a solo road trip was in order to prepare for full-time work life. In total it will take 26 days and will start in my current location (Rochester, NY) then head on home (Houston, TX) to move out of my house, then finally up to Seattle where I’ll be living full time. Pictured below is my trip. Each location does not mark a single day and some places I will be visiting then not sleeping there.
My 2 questions when planning my road trip (at least when discussing location) are between Nashville and Houston, and between Zion National Park and Seattle. If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I am a very open person and love many outdoor activities. Swimming definitely a plus. I will be taking my bicycle and also will be camping for much of the trip if that helps.

2023.06.08 03:40 thereseratops What I packed for an 18 day trip to Morocco, California, and Puerto Rico including 2 weddings, a bachelorette, and my honeymoon

Here’s my packing list for 18 days in May/June including 2 weddings, my own honeymoon, and a bachelorette party. I packed both a carry on backpack (REI Traverse 35L in S) and personal item backpack (North Face Borealis from 2014 which I think is 27L), both not completely full. For the variety of events I was prepared for, the fact that I almost used everything more than once, and the amount I experimented with convertible clothing, I thought it might be worth posting even though it’s 2 bags. We did laundry once ~day 9 or 10.
Events I was packing for

Belt bag - worn on travel days and for more active stuff - hiking, camel ride, quad biking.
Crossbody leather purse - worn to wedding events and days out in cities.
Packable backpack - needed on more active days when I needed to carry extra clothes and a water bottle
Zip close laundry bag (came with an Away carry on rolling suitcase)
Toiletry bag with 4 compartments and a hook to hang in the bathroom - full with mini sizes of almost everything I would use at home including makeup, meds, skincare, curly hair stuff, sunscreen, bug spray, etc.
Tech pouch (came with the Samsonite Silhouette 17 tote) - held phone charging cables for USB-C and USB-A, international plug converter, external battery, headphones, and my travel mini hair straightener.
Jewelry case - with jewelry for the weddings and nice dinners. Stored my engagement & wedding rings on the ring tabs on days I didn’t want to wear them.
Travel towel
Water bottle - Wish I had an insulated water bottle instead of my plastic one for the desert heat. Will be shopping for one.
Turtl pillow - strapped in the bungee cords of the north face backpack
Sun hat - folded flat and also strapped in the bungee cords when I wasn’t wearing it
Sunglasses in a case
Tevas Hurricane XLT2 - Worn for most days in Morocco and Puerto Rico. I bought cheap water shoes from Walgreens the day of the waterfall hike because I was worried about traction for rock climbing with open toed shoes, but a couple of girls on the trip did it all in Tevas without a problem.
Croc sandals - I used these functionally as flip flops for inside the hotels/ showers, especially when the Tevas were still drying off after water activities. I wore them out in the city once but they aren’t comfortable for hours of walking on uneven ground.
Sneakers - light pink color, felt like it looked ok when a little dusty in Morocco
Convertible heels to flats - worn as heels for both weddings, worn as flat sandals for both pre-wedding events. Also converted them into flats after dancing at the weddings. Would've worn for a night out at the bachelorette but my flight there was delayed and I missed it.
Packing cubes (not pictured) with all clothes - Eagle Creek Pack-It Original sizes M x 2, S x 1, XS x 1
Lehenga choli - top & bottom that I dressed up with Indian jewelry for the Indian wedding but dressed down as separates in Morocco. Worn with a dupatta - which I also used to cover my shoulders for sleeveless outfits in Morocco.
Convertible dress - worn for one wedding event and a day in Marrakech. Also was good as a cover up when going to the pool/spa within the riads.
Convertible jumpsuit - varied the necklines for a wedding welcome dinner and a dinner while glamping in the sand dunes. Worn as high waisted pants with the bra tank for wine tasting in California and for a day in the Marrakech.
Convertible dress/scarf - worn as a shawl for the black tie optional wedding and dressy casual prewedding event, worn as a scarf for a cold night out in chefchaouen, worn as a dress at the beach in Essaouira and for a day out in Marrakech.
Washable silk slip dress - for the black tie optional wedding. Required steaming so didn’t bother to wear again, but packs tiny.
White midi dress - worn once for pictures in the blue city Chefchaouen, thought I would wear again for clubbing in Morocco but didn’t end up getting to go
Plisse pants - worn for airplane, train and bus days because they’re comfy enough to curl up and sleep in
Linen pants - were great for hot and dusty desert days
Sleep shorts
Spanx for under silk and white dresses
Spanx athletic leggings - necessary for cold weather in chefchaouen and hiking in dades
Patagonia R1 - needed for plane, nights in California, chefchaouen, and Atlas mountains
White linen button down - worn many many times over other clothes
Button down short sleeve shirt - just wore once in the desert
Crochet swim cover up
Bra tank from aerie
Workout top from Target - can pass as a tshirt with pants
Modal black tshirt - comfy enough to sleep in
Cotton T-shirt - instantly got sweaty, will replace with something breezier or sweat wicking next time.
White tank
Convertible strapless bra - for the formal outfits
Merino wool bralette - was skeptical on the price but was super comfy and never felt like it got sweaty
Mesh bralette
1 bikini
1 other light bralette, 8 pairs of underwear and 4 pairs of socks not pictured (including 1 lightweight darn tough wool socks)
My backpacks felt overall light and I was fine on uneven ground and stairs wearing both of them. Someone more minimalist than me could easily get this down to 1 bag by traveling with a smaller toiletry bag and cutting 1-2 sandals, 1-3 shirts, and multiple dresses. I don’t regret bringing anything since I take a lot of pictures, so the variety was nice. I had room for food during travel and small souvenirs, so it was overall a success.
My only regret - I forgot my Columbia rain shell which which would’ve easily fit. It was super windy in California and it rained a ton in parts of Morocco. My R1 had to suffice, which is ok in a drizzle but not a downpour.
I hope someone finds this useful!

2023.06.08 02:25 bonc826 Oahu, Maui, and BI Trip Report (5/23-6/5)

This was our first time in Hawaii, and given that we weren’t sure if we’d have the chance to come back in the future, we crammed as much in as possible. We’re a couple in our late 20s. Overall, we loved Oahu, liked the Big Island, and thought Maui was just okay. The main focuses of our trip were trying a lot of different foods, which we did and enjoyed most of, and taking in the beautiful nature Hawaii has to offer, which we did and enjoyed nearly all of. We enjoyed Oahu the most because it offered the most of everything and it was easy to get around. Maui got docked a few points mostly because of how much drive time was required to do most things and it definitely wouldn’t have been worth it if we hadn’t been able to use credit card points for our hotel. HVNP was the big highlight of the Big Island, and we enjoyed a majority of what we did. If we had the chance, we’d probably go back to see more of the BI. In general, we were expecting food to be way more expensive than it was (yay for not meeting expectations) but it was surprisingly difficult for us to find fruits to try besides pineapple, mango, and papaya (boo for not meeting expectations).
This is a reaaaaaally long trip report so I tried to organize it in a way that will allow people to just find their island of interest if they don’t want to read the whole thing. Each island has a bolded header and I put a heart (💜) by things that we absolutely loved and would likely do again and a star (🌟) by things that we really enjoyed doing as first time visitors but probably wouldn’t do again. Please feel free to ask any questions about stuff I didn’t go into detail about!
Oahu Overall Rating: 9/10 Hotel: Hyatt Place Waikiki Beach (mostly stayed here because of CC points and free breakfast. Breakfast would've been way better if there was fruit besides canned pineapple, toilet paper was awful for my bootyhole, and they have the slowest elevators known to man)
Day 0: Travel/arrival
Day 1: Honolulu
Day 2: North Shore
Day 3: Waikiki
Day 4: Waikiki
Day 5: Waikiki

Maui Overall Rating: 7/10 Hotel: Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa (we walked down pretty much the entire 2 mile strip of resorts in Kaanapali and from the outside, I'd say that the Hyatt Regency was among the nicer resorts. However, we would never in a million years stay here if it weren't for CC points)
Day 6: Travel to Maui
Day 7: Haleakala
Day 8: Road to Hana
Day 9: Resort Bumming
Day 10: Snorkeling

Big Island Overall Rating: 8/10 Hotel: Orchid Tree B&B (I wanted to gatekeep this but it was too cute of a B&B to not share. The suite we got was clean and comfortable and the simple breakfast in the morning was great. The host cut fresh fruit from their yard for us) 💜
Day 11: Travel/HVNP
Day 12: HVNP/Travel

2023.06.08 00:35 AlexTMichas Four Vans

Four Vans

Four Vans

Introduction
I’ve had four vans in my life. A green 1978 bus, a white 1968 bus, a blue 1990 Vanagon, and a white 1990 Vanagon, which I drive today. Despite modern van options, my connection to VW buses and van continues to last. Now in my 40s, and with each year passing, my relationship with vans is an evolution filled with memories all of which are inspired by outdoor adventure and the curve of a road less traveled. As I begin this series of posts regarding my relationship to vans, I wanted to start with an overview of these four vans.
Van #1. Europe
When I was just about four years old, my parents decided to move to Europe with us three kids, and a teenage babysitter, who ended up more like a fourth child than the intended caregiver they had planned for. We spent two years there, much of the time in a van, (technically consider a “bus”) traveling across land, visiting relatives along the way.

The bus was shipped back from German to the United States where after a few years my dad sold it to a good friend in Sacramento.l, CA. Nearly 30 years later that same friend called me to ask if I wanted the bus - it was in perfect shape, having been stored in a garage for all those years. I had to decline… I just didn’t have the space and ability to keep it.
Here’s my dad in the late 70’s - I suspect this photo was taken near Lake Tahoe.

Van #2. High school
In high school, I purchased this 1968 air cooled bus… I think I purchased it for about $1500, and drove it about for a few years - no doubt playing Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and Cat Stevens on a crappy aftermarket stereo. When I tired my hand at rewiring some electrical which led to a catastrophic electrical problem, or seeing one of my wheels roll past me at a neighborhood stop sign shortly after I changed a flat tired, I realized my time as mechanic was short lived.

Van #3. Blueberry
Living in south Berkeley, CA in 2005, I was walking past the Berkeley Bowl, a popular grocery store when I saw a blue Vanagon. Without much thought, my soon-to-be-wife and I purchased what we later named Blueberry, a 1990 Multivan - the roomy van version that sleeps four, seats 7 with belts, but without a kitchen.
On a trip with my dog Cleo, here’s Blueberry, near Mono Lake and the hills along Highway 395.

In La Paz, Mexico, we settled up next to this dilapidated palapa (a traditional Mexican shelter roofed with palm leaves) for several nights, eating fresh fish and snorkeling. You can see our kitchen at the back of the van, and shower bag draped above.

A cold night in Yosemite with good friend. The following morning we fished in the lake just beyond.

Van #4: Luna
When I realized I no longer wanted to go longer distances and Blueberry due to lack of air conditioning and limited power in the hills, I started looking for a van replacement. So at the end of 2021, we purchased another 1990 Multivan in white named Luna. Swapping some of the good stuff from Blueberry, Luna can do everything. It has a rebuilt turbo engine - nearly doubling the power, a propane heater for cold nights, a rebuilt manual transmission, and so many other upgrades - it was just easier to purchase the van I wanted rather than spend the money, hassle, and time upgrading Blueberry.

I could have spent more on a bigger, more modern van, but I decided to stick with what I know. Simply…. there is nothing like driving a Vanagon.
