2023.06.10 20:12 Few-Pepper8381 Advice for seeking a Research and Development Position? (Biotech)
Having some major difficulties getting an industry job that I actually want to work (namely, getting into a PhD level position in RnD where I can flex my scientific background). This is going to be part rant.My background: I would like to believe that I am a competitive candidate. Graduated from a competitive program with a PhD. 6 publications (some co-authors). Worked at the NIH prior to graduate school (post-bac IRTA program). Had the option to return to the NIH as a postdoc, but Bethesda area is quite expensive these days for a postdoc salary. Following graduation, I had an excellent postdoctoral position set up at RIKEN in Japan. Received 3 years of highly competitive postdoctoral funding (5-page written research proposal with a funding rate of less than 10%). Pandemic happened. Japan closed its borders before I was able to get my visa. Locked out of the country for 2.5 years. Forced to jump from one CRO to CDMO because I needed a job immediately and to increase salary.
Right now I have 3 years of industry experience and currently work for a real shitty CDMO that is a complete trainwreck that I desperately want to leave (immensely disorganized and mismanaged. Management places significant hurdles and roadblocks that prevent employees from developing beyond their role). I am a workaholic and my boss actually restricts me from doing too much on the job despite being a high performer and efficient. The trade off is that I have gotten to the point that I work a solid 5-6 hour day and simply leave when I'm finished with my assigned work. I gave up asking to do more work, because my requests are always ignored. Now I go home early and study programming instead (certificate program at local University). My current role is well compensated but I am bored to death. It's in quality control with a sprinkling of method validation/qualification work. However, my prior experience in a CRO was pure method validation work but the job was just too easy and not stimulating enough.
Consequently, I am trying to transition away from CRO/CDMOs and work in something that is more RnD/product development focused where I feel like I would get the opportunity to work on more challenging and exciting work.I recently applied for some RnD positions locally. Got an HR screen at one but ghosted after that. In hindsight, I could have been better prepared. I was taken aback that there was such little focus on my academic research background that matched nicely with the job requirements and all they seemed to care about was my recent experience that was rather unrelated in scope. Now I know what to expect in future HR screens. In the interview I still thought I made valuable connections between my academic work and the job posting, but I guess not enough. Nothing from the other positions.
Question for those here that have found themselves in a similar position (CRO/CDMO to RnD). How easy is it to make this transition? How wide of a net do you have to cast? I'm applying locally and with 3 years of experience in industry, I would have hoped that would make me more competitive than when I started looking for jobs when I had 0 experience. But with a tight market, I'm realizing that I'm likely not going to find a local position here. I generally write a brief cover letter of my background and how it relates to the job description. But is the cover letter necessary? My resume has gone through many edits over the past few years and is always tailored to the job I'm applying to (keyword matching). It's well polished and 2 pages. It's possible I'm making some errors here but it's brief and to the point. Skills/expertise presented right at the top of the first page. I'm probably acting a bit entitled and I need to do away with that attitude. It's like, hey, I'm good enough to work at some of the best research institutes in the world but I'm not good enough for your shitty little company? It's frustrating. Advice? Possibly adding connections on LinkedIn to companies I might want to work for in other areas of the country? Expand LinkedIn network in general for more networking opportunities?

2023.06.10 20:10 AutomatonRecognizer Thermochemistry question regarding the thermal decomposition of specific compounds - (sodium oxide and iron oxide) using sodium as a source of energy
Hi there nice forum. The question is below if you don’t want to read the background info
BACKGROUND INFO : I’ve been spending these past few years researching the energy crisis that humanity seems set to encounter pretty soon and without writing too much, I’m very interested in the thermochemical decomposition of sodium oxide and to a lesser extent iron oxide (because I know it’s much harder, iron has a much higher melting point). Fossil fuels basically fit the criteria for being the best energy source ever. Cheap and abundant (currently), high energy density, high thermal radiation, highly portable. It just sucks that it pollutes and that it will run out soon
The websites that have influenced me the greatest (regarding the energy crisis) are
dothemath.ucsd.edu Energyskeptic.com Resourceinsights.com Bountiful
energy.com
And others. I am not benefiting by marketing them.
My question is that at what temperature does sodium oxide completely decompose to its elements of sodium and oxygen. Does applying sufficient heat alone (thermolysis) enable the separation of these elements or are absurd temperatures required (I consider anything above 2700 or 3000 celsius absurd)
Is there any nifty chart that shows the temperatures required to completely separate these compounds using just heat alone? Sorry if the question sounds dumb it might be because I know that in order to get things to separate usually you need them to combine with another element like carbon or hydrogen (as is often done) along with an electric current using electrolysis.
I assume in the case of the decomposition of sodium oxide that the oxygen will simply combine with surrounding nitrogen once the decomposition occurs. Would that happen? Or would it be a different outcome? Im guessing it wouldn’t happen because both oxygen and nitrogen are negative or positive?
Picture a huge amount of sodium oxide or peroxide sitting in a high temperature bowl like stainless steel or titanium or whatever other container that can withstand the high heat. Then a fresnel lens ontop of the sodium oxide beaming it with solar power.
Or you could heat it up the conventional way idk but obviously you can’t heat it up to 2000 degrees using electricity because most of the industrial coils heated up disintegrate past 1800 degrees (if my memory serves me right) and heating up sodium oxide with fossil fuels to reduce it and use it as an energy source is pointless
MORE BACKGROUND INFO : Im trying to find out if there’s some chemistry genius out there that has tried and researched using these metals as fuel and found a way to easily separate them, or if there’s some way to separate them without using standard electrochemistry because the introduction of electrodes, gases and electricity brings about issues related to corrosion and increased costs. I know thunderf00ts been doing some work related to sodium but his work involves using the sodium for work rather than it’s synthesis and distribution
Sorry if all the things talked about here sound half baked I am not a chemist just a curious mind seeing if the worlds headed to complete shit or not. Electricity alone is not going to power your car or home, at least not without destroying biodiversity. It will also introduce immense pollution, the amount of rock you have to mine using gas powered cars is also off the charts and likely not practical (at least with lithium anyways) also there is very little recycling going on with todays batteries so how in the hell are we going to recycle enough batteries for the billions of cars in the future if we aren’t even recycling the ones being used now. According to various estimates there’s only enough mineable lithium for 1 or 1.5 billion electric cars let alone the batteries you’d need for the city or your home. Either there’s a solution on the horizon or people need to change their expectations about the future

2023.06.10 20:10 T-888 We're joining the BlackOut r/paintlessdentrepair is joining the blackout on June 12-14th to protest Reddit's proposed API changes, which will end 3rd party apps
This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th-14th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.
https://i.redd.it/zqptto18e34b1.jpg What's going on? A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface.
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan? On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do as a user? Complain. Message the mods of
/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message
reddit submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on
/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at
/ModCoord.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favourite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

2023.06.10 20:10 Apoxeon Welcome to everyone who has jumped into the deep end and given Elite TFOs a try!
And I mean that. I have just had 4 straight failed TFO attempts and I am not angry. I am thrilled that Cryptic has finally given players a place (more like a reason) to point all of the DPS that has built up over the years. And I have also had a dozen successful runs.
I would very much like to share 2 very important points with those who have little to no experience with Elite TFOs. First and this is going to come as a shock to many, DPS is not everything. Second is the other half of the equation. You must know your TFO. In short DPS + Knowledge = A Good Time.
Basic knowledge of any given TFO is simple. Look at the objectives list. It should be quickly becoming obvious that none of those are optional on Elite. To quote a famous muppet "Do or do not. There is no try".
Advanced knowledge is a little trickier. It comes from experience and observation⭐. Things that might not at first be obvious. I know the Elites are the new hotness thanks to these drops that were introduced, but Advanced is a much better place to gain experience and observe. Watch how each TFO plays out and try to imagine what it would be like if Time to Kill was increased for the enemies. Look at the list of objectives and think about how you can ensure each ones success and how it might be with everything turned up to eleven. When the timer, the quota or health of a NPC can all lead to instant failure.
Elites are a fun and challenging experience. I encourage you to try them. I think Cryptic has done a great job giving us the tools. Lots of fun, powerful builds out there. Learn how to best put them to use and we will all have a good time. 🍺
⭐(A knowledgeable fleet/team mate will also do 😉)

2023.06.10 20:10 tony54143fcdd well i left, can't deal with so such a depressive environment
Before yall judge and put negative comments: Please know that I was abused physically by mom. It is not an excuse its just the truth. We don't all have it easy and those experiences really do reprogram your brain different than "normal" people. I was diagd BPD2 and schizoaffective but I don't like the meds and am more into my kids they make me feel happy most of the time. Sometimes people are just different and they can't see eye to eye.
My now ex girl that was diagnosed with shizophrenia and was SAd. I hate it then and hate it now. No offense to anyone suffering from it, but I sometimes stay in denial because like I told her ive already had a hard life and on top of all of it instead of moving on and becoming a dad and grandpa eventually I am stuck with a woman who if her diagnosis is true and in fact valid then I have to cope with it. I dealt with her and her mom and dad for the pas 4 years (before we were living in another state when we met). The meds must be doing their job. I have never seen her have a psychotic break or “schizo episode” except for the one that she had when we first found out about her schizo diag. I recently left her, again, and feel bad of course but like I said my hard life and her now hard life just won’t mesh. I thought I had moved on and wanted to start a family and get marry etc but I feel all ive learned is fun times from here except for the sleeping in and “lazy” behavior. Its hard for me sometimes as I forget its schizophrenia depression etc.. and I start thinking she doesn’t want to be with me for my attitude (i was diagd with bpd2 and schizoaffective but I keep saying its because things aren’t the way they should be at home (i won’t take meds, can’t afford therapy)). It has been a hard road for me since my son was born but I have had to accept it and now i am having to move on as my anger and hurt is just too much with our 4 year old daughter as well. Her parents won’t allow us to grow together and she refuses to accept who I am and only wants things her way. I am done I am tired of dealing with it. Its best if her mom and brother (who abused her) take care of her. They make it worse for me but she doesn’t mind and I have to always take a backseat which just makes it worse for me. I know i will get laughed and negativity will spew but this is the truth from my side. I am having to start over and it so far it hasn’t been easy. I haven’t spoken to my kids and i feel im giving them a bad vibe. Thankfully the younger one doesn’t understand, but im so angry that the same dude who SAd her is there at home at any moment can come over and do something not only to my daughter but to her and I imagine her fawning over and letting it happen. From this point though it isn’t my fault or my problem and I need to move on. I should be enjoying my life not being cautious because she needs to sleep all day and I am going to be a dad and mom while she is heavily sedated and does what she wants because of her excuses starting with the schizo diag and SAd that happened to her and of course my frustration and anger boiling over. Its basically her whole family against just me. I just needed to vent. I am going through something alone and have no one to turn to.

2023.06.10 20:10 bakochba Why is the Druid Spirit Boon so much work, what's up with Grizly Rage?
I played both a Necro and a Druid, I don't understand why as a Necro I had the book of the read at level 1 but as a druid I had to cross the map CLEAR A STRONGHOLD and go on a quest to open Sprit boons that also require me to spend spirit currency to unlock?
Where the Necro had interesting choices that changed my summons, I expected something similar for spirit boons, like if a bond with a snake I can turn into a snake, or have a snake companion, or at least throw a snake at someone. Instead it's just a bunch of passive stats? Not even game changing just 20% more damage when x happens sometimes.
Grizzly rage. Ok this is it, I'm a Druid, I'm channeling a grizzly, I'm enraged. I expected something like 10 seconds of 100% extra damage and health, all the grizzly powers at no spirit cost and maybe an upgrade that extends it on kill, you know a tank.
Instead it's just 20% extra damage and damage reduction which I can get easily from other sources and I still have to USE SPIRIT TO DO BEAR ATTACKS??? It's grizzly rage not slightly agitated bear that just woke up from a nap. Rage is on the title! An eragged cocaine bear isn't going to be slowed down by spirit or spend half it's rage time with basic attacks, it attacks recklessly with adrenaline fueled attacks and with all its might!!
My Necro literally gets Army of the Dead. An army of dead warriors comes from the ground to attack my enemies. I can get 2 maybe 3 slams while taking damage and then basic attacks again.
If you're about to comment about your level 70 paragon build with the RNG class defining aspects saying how good it is this post isn't for you. We get it, the point is the Necro feels good the entire game atvaby build style, that's how it should be, the amount of work require to get the Druid there seems why out of whack.

2023.06.10 20:10 sarlardorsan One of my players has a problem with some conditions
Not to many weeks ago my group and i started playing pathfinder, we went through the beginner box into Abomination Vault.
The problem became apparent at the kobold ghost hazard and further confirmed at the wisp.
My player hates the confused condition, to the point where they tried to use the shove action instead of strike and when i pointed that out he then pulled out his knife and went for the stab, despite him being an animal barb that has yet to ever actually use his weapon.
It went on to him using rage before any other action in case a fight would break out, like rage then open the door, rage then walk up stairs... He would then sit down and refuse to move until the minute for rage was up.
I had a talk with him after the session, and he stated that any effect that would remove his agency would make him act like this, cause this is not the reason he is playing role playing games, in fact it goes directly against role playing as your not your own character anymore.
I went through all the conditions with him, and he only had a problem with Confused and Controlled, and told me that he would act the same way should these conditions affect his character.
Im quite new to PF2E, so is there any homebrew or other thing i could do to solve this, and is there a lot of these conditions in Abomination Vault, on the lower levels?

2023.06.10 20:09 kamikazeecow Exploring building an app for poker players - need some ideas
Hey all, I'm a software engineer and I've been looking to build something new for the poker community. I know a ton of solvers, bankroll management apps and such already exist. But i'm wondering if anyone has anything they wished was built? Some ideas I've had:
An app to make it easy to record hands while playing live
When i'm at the table, a notebook feels too awkward to pull out and most casinos don't allow you to record the table. I figured maybe some kind of app that makes it super easy to jot down a hand on the fly for your notes for later. Imagine some kind of prebuilt template with shorthands for writing down stacks, hands, notes, etc.
An app that handles all your home game logistics
Thinking the ultimate homegame poker companion app. A way to handle your invite list, who's coming over, collecting money and paying out, handle tournament timers, leaderboard etc.
Tilt control app
Sometimes we need a reminder of when to leave the table, take a break, or do some reframing around how we're playing live. The app could be a mindfulness app made specifically for poker players.
Maybe you guys have some other things you'd like to see? Would love to hear some thoughts where I could build something custom for people that fits a missing need.

2023.06.10 20:09 Excellent_Iron9483 Ten things each USMLE student should do
| Ten things each USMLE student should do (“You might feel like you know it all until you start getting into details! ”) I completely understand how daunting it feels to prepare for the USMLEs — a mountain of information to learn, questions with confusing choices that make it difficult to pick the “best” answer, and on top of all that, a strict time limit! I’m an Internal Medicine physician, an Assistant Professor at Brown University, USMLE STEP 2 CK tutor for Michigan State University, and an author of a USMLE STEP 2 CK textbook encompassing all topics for the boards ( Thieme: A WIN series for USMLE available online and in bookstores). In addition to a decade of teaching experience, I scored in the 99th percentile on all the 3 USMLE STEP exams and am currently creating an online USMLE question bank. I hope the following 10 pieces of advice will simplify your “road to residency”: - Use the “IRIS” steps to master USMLE topics. Input- Reflect- Integrate- Share
- Do as many practice questions as you possibly can ~The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get
- Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.
- Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.
- Use memory techniques to help you remember important details.
- Pomodoro!
- Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.
- Get a USMLE-coach
- Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)
- “The shortest path”
1. Use the “IRIS” steps: Input, R eflect, I ntegrate, and S hare — in order to master the USMLE topics. https://preview.redd.it/kcxcgtm0p75b1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeab3498231448f534cde68106c93db5d7006ee9 Reading a book (for example, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) but not reflecting on it and not integrating it into practice will result in the “illusion of learning.” Similarly, it is extremely crucial to practice IRIS to perfect your craft of USMLE preparedness. Books serve as a great base camp for your knowledge ascents. Choose any USMLE book- a comprehensive book you can reflect upon — for annotation, highlights, and other important notes/personalized mnemonics. - For Step 1, there seems to be a consensus of a clear-cut winner being First Aid for Step 1.
- For Step 2, go to your university library (online/virtual), scan a few of the most popular books, and find one that fits your style. Then stick to the “chosen one” for your learning journey.
Shameless ad: the textbook I authored (Thieme: A WIN book) is also a concise yet thorough book you may choose to utilize for Step 2 CK or Step 3. Check it out! 2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can. The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get. - Finish all Uworld questions (tutored mode, chapter by chapter; learning one topic at a time improves clarity and efficiency).
- Then finish the 2 Uworld sim forms, the free 120 NBME questions, and NBME practice exams (in the timed mode — to simulate real exam and to practice time management).
- Also, try to finish as many Amboss questions as you can. If you finish Amboss too and have extra time and want to be a superstar student, you could even finish Kaplan Qbank along the way!
A suggested timeline for a 2-month USMLE Step 2 study schedule: - Complete the entire Step 2 CK UWorld in the first month (averaging around 80–100 questions per day). Focus on the learning objectives of each question and move on — you don’t need to memorize the entire explanation (example demonstrated below).
- Then, for the next month, do an NBME self-assessment every week to assess your progress. Also, this month, focus on your NBME deficiencies (target your weaknesses, do not run away from them), and attempt to finish the Amboss Qbank.
Links: to NBME, UWORLD, and Amboss 3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically. Step 1: Start by reading the last sentence of the question — this will save some time and will help guide your attention to the specific thing that the question is asking. How does this save time? With some questions, you don’t necessarily need to read the entire question to pick the correct answer. For instance: Which of the following medications will help with ureteral stone expulsion? The answer, in this case, is tamsulosin. You don’t have to read the entire question stem to answer this question! Time can be saved for other harder questions you will encounter later in that block. And, if you are doing practice questions from a Qbank, you don’t NEED to read the whole explanation. The goal of this question is to understand that alpha-1 blockers help with ureteral smooth muscle relaxation making it easier for the stone to pass. That’s all; just move on to the next question. Another tip to save even more time: For really long question stems and lots of lab values, you could jump to the last two lines and scan the labs to note any specific abnormal lab values that might’ve been presented to help answer the question even faster. For example, a long clinical vignette that ultimately says “antiGBM antibody positive”: This line alone gives you the diagnosis of Goodpasture’s syndrome, so you can proceed to answer the question. Step 2: If the last line (or scanning the labs) isn’t enough, you must read the whole question. The most efficient way to answer the majority of questions is to follow these steps: - Read the question stem and highlight the pertinent findings.
- Make the diagnosis.
- Choose the answer based on your diagnosis.
Some students tend to fall into the trap of reading the question stem and then trying to reason through each of the answers before committing to a diagnosis, which is inefficient, as it leads to many back-and-forths. To reach the diagnosis, focus on your highlighted portions of the question stem. Those are the puzzle pieces that you need to connect to figure out the diagnosis. For instance: - Hoarse voice + weight gain + 1+reflexes in all extremities + proximal muscle weakness = Hypothyroidism
- Hirsutism + easy bruising + proximal muscle weakness = Cushing syndrome
(As a last step, ask yourself whether all the puzzle pieces fit into the diagnosis you have in mind. To double-check, consider whether your diagnosis fits the patient’s age, chief complaint, and course or severity of the disease. If not, you probably don’t have the right diagnosis and need to re-think i t). 4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis. But how you may ask. Let me break this down even further for you. To answer USMLE questions correctly, you need to master the art of making the right diagnosis — an art that can be learned by clustering different conditions with similar features and then recognizing the features that set them apart. https://preview.redd.it/fild67zdq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=a16058a9c5ded78f1fd3701a825c993df155da69 Example: HOW TO APPROACH IMMUNODEFICIENCY QUESTIONS? https://preview.redd.it/2zddp8a5e85b1.png?width=1584&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a01601bd5fbe9cefc5a5fc88b3dcea74e6f1bc Further practice: Click on the following links to practice a few questions dedicated to learning of clustering and differentiating method: Remember, no matter how prepared you are, you will always feel uncertain about some questions, and that’s okay. Just use your best judgment, flag it, and move on. Chances are that you might have a fresh perspective on the question when you come back to it later. 5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details Memorizing various pieces of medical information (for example, differentiating features of diseases, management steps, cut-off values, etc.) is key for acing an exam. Use memory-retaining techniques and tools, such as associations, mnemonics, the popular flashcard app ANKI, etc. Example: New onset ascites generally require diagnostic paracentesis. The two most important things you look for in ascitic fluid are SAAG and neutrophil count. - SAAG (serum ascites albumin gradient) = serum albumin concentration — (minus) albumin concentration in ascitic fluid
- What is the cut-off of SAAG? 1.1.
- How to remember? SAAG: “AA”= “1” and “1” because “A” is the 1st alphabet. So, the important SAAG value is 1.1. Elevated SAAG (>1.1) is elevated portal pressure.

Use (or even better, create your own) memory associations/mnemonics whenever possible. * Ascitic neutrophil count of ≥ 250/mm3 is diagnostic of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Example 2: How to tackle questions of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia? https://preview.redd.it/9q58a3plq75b1.png?width=1628&format=png&auto=webp&s=62de1716c6d57cd8baeaf64ecc020f58640a6108 Here is a link to a practice question on Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (to integrate what you learned). Here is a link to information on one of the students’ favorite tools: Anki cards. This is particularly helpful for step 1. I also advise students to make their own Anki flashcards (based on UW incorrect, cross-referencing your chosen book as you make the cards). This reflective and integrative act of making cards is one of the best ways to retain information. 6. Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique The most important strategy for productivity is the Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique; Do 25 minutes of USMLE-focused study prep time (with no distractions like your cell phone or TV), followed by 5 mins break. Then, refresh and repeat. (Some students prefer 50 mins study time and 10 mins breaks.) Pomodoro breaks your work(study) time into portions and gives some rest time for the brain to come back much more refreshed. This provides the much-needed reset to your productivity decline after 25 to 50 mins of study (improving overall efficiency and preventing burnout). I have seen some students working on their computers during this 5 min break. This isn’t RAM refreshment. (Get up from that chair, go out of that room, and de-strain your eyes and your body posture!) Here is a link to a great Chrome extension for this. It also measures your total study time. 7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey. If you start following these 10 pieces of advice from the beginning of shelf exams, by the time you take your USMLE Step 2, you will have mastered all its topics (and you may need a quick refresher, that’s it!). Example: During your 3rd year, use the IRIS steps: do UWorld questions subject by subject and take NBME clinical mastery for Shelf Exams. Processing one subspeciality (chapter) at a time also improves clarity and efficiency — a lean-learning principle as opposed to batch processing. Isn’t shelf preparation automatic portioning? Note: A 1–2-month time frame for USMLE preparation doesn’t typically give you enough time to follow ALL the IRIS steps. Also, during this time, a common example of batch processing occurs where students generate a practice-question block choosing all the system topics in UWorld instead of honing in and tackling one topic at a time. 8. Get a USMLE coach All athletes have coaches; why don’t we? You can get online USMLE tutoring/mentoring or seek a well-qualified USMLE tutor through your university. There is no shame in asking an expert for help to improve any areas of weakness. When I go on my snowboarding trips, I always seek a few snowboarding lessons to accelerate my learning process. Another shameless ad — I tutor on the Wyzant online platform. Here is a link to a $40 OFF for your first class. I also do free weekly 1-hr Zoom sessions (Wednesday at 6 pm EST) on “how to get better at tackling USMLE questions” that anybody can participate in— here is the link. Has there ever been any Olympic athlete who won a gold medal without the help of a coach? 9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!) Take proper care of your physical and mental health -Since I love mnemonics, here’s another one! SEE well to do USMLE well: Sleep, Eat, and Exercise: - Sleep: at least 7–8 hours every day to recharge your body at night (Don’t partially charge your phone overnight only to run out of battery by noon)
- Eat healthy foods
- Exercise regularly
10. Always take the shortest path There might be an infinite number of ways to go from point A to point B, but there is only one shortest path. Finding the shortest path frees up some time to do other activities in our limited number of hours in a given day. So try to maximize efficiency. Perhaps, the shortest path to achieving high scores on USMLE is to start following these 10 pieces of advice NOW !! I hope this short thread on “how to learn!!” will help you on your road to residency! Appendix: Exam question schema: — In some USMLE questions, the question creators add a detail that tries to derail you through a red herring. Examples: “A family history of a neurological disorder in a case that sounds like chronic tuberculous meningitis,” “a recent camping trip history in a case that appears to be Neisseria meningitis,” “ a malignant head tumor that was noticed after head trauma” etc. So in most USMLE questions, — you need the following schematic understanding: https://preview.redd.it/dw1kitozq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=b71305adbac7e9204789f2665d711e9bbdcba349 “Thank you for taking the time to read our article. 2023.06.10 20:09 prince-white The statute of secrecy... Failed. Hogwarts... Never really took off as 'the best school' (story idea / suggestion / prompt)
Okay, so I had just this idea, based on a scene of a story I'm reading. Not sure how I got from that scene to my idea, but that's not important.
Anyway, like the title says, the statute of secrecy failed. Hogwarts exists, but it never became a thing. The ministry isn't as as organized, as it is in the books. In fact, the ministry would be more of a bunch of families trying to keep order somewhat.
- random scene of what the story might have- (note, I'm terrible at Hagrid's accent, so I didn't bother and just wrote him normally.)
Harry stared at the man, who had gone from your ordinary "Joe Bloggs" into a man, who could probably punch Arnold Schwarzenegger's light out without even trying. The man was huge, he had a beast of a beard and if it weren't for the fact Harry was certain he wouldn't hurt a fly, he would probably be very wary of him.
"...Could you please repeat what you just said?" Harry asked.
"You're a wizard." The man, Hagrid repeated.
"That's what I thought you said." Harry muttered. "So, what, I can pull rabbits out of my hat?" Harry asked sarcastically.
"Nope. Nothing as elaborate as that." Hagrid said, either ignoring or not catching on to Harry's sarcasm. "I can conjure birds though, that means that I can make them appear out of nothing. Though, they're just constructs and will disappear after a few minutes. But that's all you need, really."
"And I'm supposed to go to this... What was it again?" Harry asked.
"Hogwarts." Hagrid repeated. "It's a small school, and it was founded a couple of centuries ago. It never became as popular as the founders had hoped, but it does have enough families that it can keep going."
"And my parents went there as well?" Harry asked.
"Yup." Hagrid nodded. "From the moment your mum knew she was pregnant with you, she registered your name. And once you were born, you summoned your bottle to you, when I was visiting once, when your dad wasn't quick enough to your liking."
"Does that mean you knew my mum and dad well?" Harry asked.
"I sure did." Hagrid nodded. "Taught them how to defend them against dangerous animals myself."
- other scene different from above, goes into detail about how the statute of secrecy may have failed-
"There were many tries and attempts to get families to agree to talk about a statute of secrecy. And of all those tries, only once did it get far enough that it might be approved." Professor Albus Dumbledore, headmaster and the one who taught history lectured.
"My very own ancestor, Arthur Dumbledore, argued that in favor of it, because of the prejudice mundanes had against us. Many unfortunate women were accused of witchcraft and while few of them were actual witches, the ones who were, were with very few exceptions, always young children."
"In the end, it failed and any attempts that followed never gained enough support to make it a possibility since. And given today's technology, it is very much impossible to truly hide or make people forget we exist." The professor continued with his lecture.
"Wizards and witches have fought openly and subtly in wars as recent as the first and second world war. In fact, if it wasn't for them, Hitler may have won the war. Today though, we have witches and wizards who work openly and secretly in just about every job you care to name. It could be argued that our world could be much more terrible than how we have it today. We have truth serum, which is available in the most terrible cases, such as where someone is accused of murder." Here the professor paused before continuing.
"It is however, not all bright and positive. The church," and the man was barely able to keep himself from sneering, "is still very much our enemy. They have brainwashed witches and wizards to infiltrate our settlements, before betraying them. They are put on trial, and while even the church can't get away with outright murdering them, their re-education camps are a fate I wouldn't wish on even my most terrible enemy."
--
And here I ran out of steam. I would envision smaller magical settlements throughout the world, each claiming independence but also connected to their muggle government. Some are left alone, leaving them to do as they please, whilst others are kept on a tight leash.
Thoughts?
