I just visited downtown Santa Barbara for the first time in many months. My wife and I live in the Santa Ynez Valley, and we savored a stellar meal at Bettina's in Montecito for a treat.
We then stopped by Trader Joe's on Milpas to grab some groceries. Upon returning to our vehicle, the whole night had felt safe and enjoyable up to that point. It wasn't until we decided to stop by Paseo Nuevo for dessert that things took a drastic turn for the uncomfortable.
We found a spot at the Paseo Nuevo parking garage easily enough; that was no issue... As soon as we exited the car, we saw streets littered with garbage and walls tagged with graffiti. There was always the occasional marked curb or beer can on the ground here or there in the city, but the area of State and Ortego seemed to look especially filthy tonight.
Walking just 2 blocks from our car to get dessert and back, we saw too many drugged-out people to count, homeless people asking for money, and people loitering with brown bags on every area of State Street we passed.
This didn't feel at all like the Santa Barbara I grew up with. It didn't feel this way even 6 months ago.
No longer wishing to finish our dessert at a table on the street, we headed back toward our car. In doing so, we saw emergency response tending to an unconscious individual who'd seemingly been found by passersby — he was passed out in the middle of the square between Dargan's front door and State Street.
I really hope he's okay.
I have to ask: Is this the typical vibe on State Street during the week, or did we just catch an off-night? 😞

I live near the city in an apartment where the apartment number and street number are the same. At least once a month, I will have someone else's food delivery order dropped off on my doorstep.
During lockdown, this happened every single day without fail. I've had food nicked off me before, so I've always taken the food to the correct address.
I'm only asking this as the drivers obviously checked that the street address is correct, but with so many people complaining that people didn't get their food which can affect the driver's employment, I'm just wondering why drivers don't take that one last glance at the delivery order address before heading off to the next job.

My grandfather was an incredibly talented man who also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, and he was convinced that the nuclear apocalypse was going to end the human race at some point, so he built his own bunker and then buried the entrance because he was convinced that both the KGB and the CIA were watching him and wanted to keep the bunker a secret. Yes, he was a crazy man. My dad inherited his house but never lived there, so when I had my first child in 2018 and got married in 2019, my dad made me an incredibly generous offer for the house. I bought computers that were more expensive than the house.
The bunker became kind of an urban legend, mostly because my old grandpa used to tell a lot of crazy stories, but out of curiosity I went looking for it and found the entrance. THE OLD MAN REALLY DID IT!
So, thanks to being stuck at home during the uneventful 2020 and 2021, I started remodeling the bunker to look less like a Fallout Vault and more like my own man cave. Everyone loves it, especially the kids (My nephews and friend's children). So the house is decorated to my wife's taste, while I can do whatever I want in the bunker, play gaming, fix computers, set up a whole home server, work from home, etc.
However, lately she has been complaining about me being distant and spending a lot of time there and less time with her and our child. She is pregnant again, so she said she was worried, but I just promised to spend more time at the house. After a few weeks that wasn't enough for her and she accuses me of abandoning her.
I'm asking for judgment here because I'm trying to be there for my family, but this bunker feels like it's the only thing that's really mine and where I can actually have a break, but my wife has said she's going to seal the entrance otherwise I might miss the birth and not even notice. Should I just move all my stuff into the house and forget about it? Am I really being neglectful, or is this just her pregnancy hormones talking?
To be clear, I do help with the house chores and spend time with my son when I'm there and I have an intercom in the bunker so my wife can just call me if she needs anything and I'll go up there immediately.
ETA: Everybody is asking me this. I spends at least 6 hours at the Bunker on week days. I work there so I think is reasonable, and at least 4 hours on weekends. But yeah, ur right, I need to make arrangements.
I forgot to mention: Our son goes to kindergarten so my wife has time to work and sometimes be alone at home.
ETA 2: Guys, I swear I'm taking notes. I'm just trying to understand what I should change about myself and how to talk to my wife about this. Remember that I spend at least 6 hours WORKING, not scratching my belly. My manager allows me to log out early if I finished my work for the day but can't log out if I've been working for less than 6 hours. I also spend time talking with my team on Slack.
ETA 3: So many of you are picking up on my language. I would appreciate if you explain calmly why my choice of words is so bad so I dont fuck things up when I speak to my wife.
Mini-Update: I had a talk with my wife. Overall I think it went well since she told me everything, but there are so many raw emotions right now and I was sent to sleep in the spare room. She had no mercy on me but we needed this talk so we can have a clear path for our future together.

"Before getting married I just went to the office everyday but had my main computer in the bedroom. When we first moved into this house, I got a room to place my computers. During this time yes, had more contact with my family but it was harder to make it feel like an "office"."

UPDATE (Same Post): Most likely May 23 (next day, based on comments and web archive)I talked to my wife. I asked her to be very honest and I promised to let her talk until she was done. First of all, it's not just about the time I spend in the bunker now, but she felt completely alone taking care of our little baby while I spent almost all of my free time remodeling and building and when it's done I'm just down there. I explained to her that it was basically my office now, she understood and apologized and then continued to explain herself. I'll just quote the gist of it because we talked for hours.
"I haven't been my own person since my first pregnancy, I feel like a doll, every day is the same, I'm bored, frustrated, angry, just when I thought it might get easier, I get pregnant again, how many years until I can just be me again".
"You have a big hole underground where you can play and not care about the word, I haven't read a book in years, I can't read 2 pages without falling asleep"
"Yes, the house looks nice, but what about a place for me? I don't want a Kindle, I don't want audiobooks to listen to while cooking or driving, I want a PHYSICAL collection, where do I put them? When was the last time I went to a library? When was the last time you gave me something made of real paper?"
(For context, she's always been a bookworm, loves books and the aesthetic of having shelves full of them, but it's true she hasn't read in a long time, I gave her a Kindle for our anniversary and I pay for her audible subscription, I thought those would be good substitutes, but they're not)

I'm going to move my gaming consoles into the house and see if I can set up SteamLink to stream games from my gaming PC to our TV or something. We agreed to go on dates outside the house, and I'm going to take on more responsibilities around the house.
I want to address something. I was told by my parents that I had to "help" with the house, "help" with the kids. But then I come to Reddit and it turns out that "helping" is a problem.
You talked a lot about mental load, this was the first time I heard about it, who was supposed to teach me that? "Helping", not having addictions, being loyal and always being there seemed like what every good husband does, now I realize it was just the bare minimum. I feel like I have to relearn everything, and it's hard to realize that I'm a bad husband and father for thinking that the bare minimum was all I needed to have a long and happy marriage. I became a reddit villain by being clueless, but I accept that.

Hey guys, I hope you remember me. I'm the bunker guy. Not much has happened in terms of big events, but things are getting better.
After the talk I had with my wife, I started taking more responsibility around the house. I've been taking on as much as I can so she can rest. Except I'm a terrible cook, so I have some frozen and instant food that I just heat up and call it done, but I've been taking our son to school and picking him up, spending more time with him in the Bunker (he loves it), I've been gaming in the living room because I moved my consoles there and successfully set up Steam Link. So overall, my wife is sleeping more and has a few hours to just do nothing. She is much calmer now. She said she loved being able to just chill on the couch and not have to worry about anything. This pregnancy has been rough on her emotions so I'm glad to see her like this.
She also spent some time with me in the bunker, doing her own work, sleeping, or just hanging out. She even got The Sims and started playing again. The first thing she did was build an almost exact replica of our house. We also did a lot of cuddling down there and even had sex. I have to admit, I'm loving every second of this new dynamic, even though there are still a few things that need to be changed and tweaked.
I offered to build a room for her in the bunker, but she says it gets a little claustrophobic after a few hours and she likes sunlight, so that was declined. Then I suggested building a shed for her. She said nothing, but after a few hours showed me a shed she built on The Sims, a hexagonal brick structure with a U-shaped couch in the middle, a door, and bookshelves on every wall, connected to the main house by a fenced-in path. I think it looks nice, so I will send it this week to the same people who helped me rebuild this bunker so they can convert it to CAD.
Nothing is perfect yet, I have a lot to learn and haven't started couples counseling yet (that will be in about 2 weeks) but I am trying my best, I have been an idiot for way too long and have a lot to make up for. Thank you all again.

• I want to be a Firefighter, how do I get started: Each Country/State/Province/County/City/Department has different requirements. Some require you only to put in an application. Others require certifications prior to being hired. A good place to start is to research a department you wish to join, look up their website and check their requirements.
• Am I too old: Many departments, typically career municipal ones, have an age limit. Volunteer departments usually don't. Check each department's requirements.
• I'm in high school, What can I do: Does your local department have an explorer's program or post? If so, join up. Otherwise focus on your grades, get in shape and stay in shape, and most importantly: stay out of trouble.
• I got in trouble for [insert infraction here], what are my chances: Worse than someone who has a clean record, which is the vast majority of your competition. Depending on the severity, it may not be a factor. If it is a major crime (felonies), you're likely out of luck. You might be a really nice guy/gal, but departments don't like to make exceptions, especially if there's a long line of applicants that don't have any.
• What will increase my chances of getting hired: If there's a civil service exam, study for it! There are many guides online that will help you go over all those things you forgot such as basic math and reading. Some cities even give you a study guide. If it's a firefighter exam, study for it! For the CPAT (Physical Fitness Test), cardio is arguably the most important factor. If you're going to the gym for the first time during the hiring process, you're fighting an uphill battle. Get in shape and stay in shape. Most cities offer some sort of bonus to those who are veterans of the military.
• How do I prepare for an interview: Interviews can be one on one, or in front of a board/panel. There are many generic guides that exist to help one prepare for an interview, however here are a few good tips:

1. Dress appropriately. Business casual at a minimum (Button down, tucked in long sleeve shirt with slacks and a belt, and dress shoes). Get a decent haircut and shave.
2. Practice interview questions with a friend. You can't accurately predict the off the wall questions they will ask, but you can practice the ones you know they probably will, like why do you want to be a Firefighter, or why should we hire you?
3. Scrub your social media. Gone are the days where people in charge aren't tech savvy. Don't have a perfect interview only for your chances of being hired gone to zero because your Facebook or Instagram has pictures of you getting blitzed. Set that stuff to private and leave it that way

Title is a bit misleading. They’re a good roommate and person, but definitely less on the social side. And also, most of the time they do clean up after themselves. My only problem is that there are stray pubes all over the shower. My roommate and I both have short hair on our heads and I keep my pubes trimmed, so that can be the only other explanation I can think of. It’s disgusting but I don’t want to be mean, how can I ask him to nicely wash them down the drain/just make sure they’re not plastered all over the shower walls and floor?

So for reasons that are too lengthy to explain at the moment, I've found myself in quite a predicament where I'm basically in my early 30s, broke, with next to no money saved up, no higher education, 100 pounds overweight, no friends, no husband, and additionally have severe depression and social anxiety and a possible newfound nuerolgical disorder thats making it somewhat hard to communicate sometimes that makes me come across as an idiot even though I'm not, to top it all off. As if that all wasn't enough as it is... I also happen live in a very podunk, small town that I've wanted to leave for years, as I feel like my life is going nowhere there, but I haven't had the opportunity to leave, that is, until now. So this leads me to the reason I am writing. While one part of me really, really wants to take the opportunity as a way to start over and relocate, on the other hand, I'm very weary to jump at the offer, for a few reasons, which I'll do my best to explain. So I basically am wondering, if you were me, what you would do in this situation, or if you had any other ideas on what to do to help fix my clusterf#ck of a life. So long story short, the offer that was presented was that 1 of my relatives had made the suggestion that I move wiith them while I got back on my feet and just try to start back over living in the city they live in because presumably, even though I am not crazy about that area either, It would at least provide me with a slightly better quality of life and better job opportunities than where I live now. One of the main issues with this is, however, that I've actually lived with this person at one other time in the past, and I ended up having to move out because they are, in a nutshell,very mentally unstable. Even though they had good intentions and were trying to help me in the beginning, unfortunately, they essentially ended up almost attacking me towards the end of my stay there, which prompted my moving out. So you can see why i would be very weary about the idea of ever considering moving back in. The thing is, however, I am SO miserable living where i presently do that i would do almist anything to leave, but what holds me back, are a few additional fears. On top of what Ive already mentioned, I have to wonder if, aside from the major potential issue I've just mentioned, if moving to a city like i would be in in this scenario would even be something that I could handle to begin with, seeing as i have somewhat of a borderline disability when it comes to remembering directions etc, and driving around a city larger than a small metro is an impossibility for me without a gps. No matter which way I look at this scenario- my life feels f#cked. I could stay in this dead ass, miserable town, but feel a bit more secure because at least it small enough to where with my condition, the driving feels manageable and safer, but it's so boring here that it literally sucks the life out of me. On the other hand, I could take the option of leaving that currently presents itself, and leave, and take the risks that would come with living with a mentally unstable person, and then just hope and pray I wouldn't get attacked again until I could hopefully move out within a couple of months to my own place, but there really is no gaurantee that that would even happen, as any job I'd have in the city most ljkely would barely pay enough to make rent, as I'm also unfortunately limited to lower paying jobs due to a lack of education. I really don't know what to do here, with my life as a whole. I feel directionless, trapped in a cycle of poverty amd obscurity, miserable, and hopeless, any way I slice it. I'm really afraid of what could end up happening to me. Any ideas on anything that might help, or any ideas on what ypu would do if you were in my shoes, would really, absolutely be appreciated. So I (18F) have two dogs we’ll call them M(Female) and W(male) and a cat who we’ll call T (female) my T and W are very calm pets who sleep easy throughout the night, while M is very hyper and can’t sleep unless she’s in her kennel. I know it’s what works for us but I can’t help feeling guilty and like I’m leaving her out, sometimes W sleeps on the floor and eventually makes his way to my bed but T always sleeps on my bed, I feel like I’m excluding her and I hate it, is there anything I can do? I’ve considered putting a blanket over her kennel so she doesn’t have to look but idk, I just don’t want her to be sad or thing I’m abandoning her, I don’t know. I hope this makes sense, also by hyper I mean she runs around, keeps my other dog away too, the cat is usually able to sleep through it all but she also jumps on the bed, will wake me up at night by licking my face, pawing at it, jumping on me, ect.

I'm dating a girl I found on bumble. We went on a date and I had to travel to other city for a month. When I came back we we went on a other date and then she had to travel for a month. We have been texting for the entire time but not too much, just 1 o 2 messages per day.
Now we're back on the same town and today we went for a third day.
The thing is I feel confused. I don't know if I want to get into a relationship with her. It's been nice to have someone to talk to because this city is new for me but I don't feel attracted to her so I would like to stay friends.
Nevertheless, I'm 28 years old and I have never been in a relationship so I'd like to live the experience though I feel is kind of selfish to do that.

Just found out that my Granda hasn't got long left. He's in his 90s but it's still come as a shock to the family. Up until a month ago he walked 2 miles every morning with his dog round the river, gets up at 6 every morning and has always been a very physically and mentally strong character.
Not really sure what I'm posting for. Not really for advice, I'm just trying to wrap my head around a world without him in it.
He was an unbelievable husband, father and granda. Never drank in his life and doesnt talk much, but when he does he's one of the funniest, warmest human beings I've ever known. You'd often see him at family parties, up to the wee hours with a glass of milk instead of alcohol (or a Fanta orange if he felt like a treat) telling us all stories about the Ireland of his youth (when a cow was worth more than a motor car).
Chatting to anyone and everyone. Doesnt matter your age or station in life, he has a way of chatting to just about anyone he meets and leaving them laughing or with a solid piece of advice.
He lived through the second world war, and described the whole affair as being "an awful aul hanlon." Deeply religious in his own way but takes no truck with bigotry. Couldn't care less about your politics, your gender or your sexuality. As long as you were a hard worker, loyal to your friends and looked after your own you have a friend for life in him.
At the end of the day I'm going to miss him. I'm not sure how to talk to the family about it because we honestly don't know how long we have or how he'll be. I'll be giving him a call in the next hour or two. Just no idea what to say.

I (24f) got pregnant with a one night stand with a guy I would later find out is not a good person (he is currently in jail) my family is very religious and was already upset that I was pregnant but not married. And even more when then they found out the father of my son was in jail. I was still semi financially supported by my parents when I got pregnant. I had a job but it was minimum wage and could barely get me by. When they found out I was pregnant they completely cut any financial aid off this left me sleeping in a car for most of my pregnancy. (He is fine now) luckily I was able to find a little apartment for me and my son. (Who is 2mo now) I decided not to even tell my family that I had gave birth except my 15yr brother who had always supported me but couldn’t do much to him being a minor and living with my parents. Last week my brother got his phone taken and my mother (53) saw the messages between me and him and saw I had my son. She told the whole family and contacted me to meet her “grand baby” I was shocked that she would even think for a moment id ever let her near my son. I sent her many long paragraphs saying how wrong I was treated how I was alone how I was almost homeless ect. She then told the family I was refusing to let her meet her grandson and was overacting because she was trying to teach me responsibility. What does this do?
Simple, it's a form which take in the parameters, calculates the tax outgo in old tax regime and new tax regimes and gives the individual an estimate of how much tax will they be paying monthly and yearly. It takes into considerations all the common tax provisions and deductions which might be pertinent to a salaried person and gives an estimate of the post tax income under both the regimes.
Some Caveats:

• Does not include Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) computation. If you have submitted proofs for LTA Amount mentioned in your CTC it is tax free to that extent. Add the remaining LTA in the category for other allowance. Kindly note that LTA exemption is available only twice in 4 years.
• Assumes you stay in a tier 1 metro city (Mumbai,Pune,Kolkata,Bangalore,Delhi,Hyderabad and Ahmedabad) The tax outgo in old regime for people staying on rent in any other city will be (1-3%) or more (subject to tax bracket).
• Assumes the loan taken during purchase of house was/is more than Rs. 45 lakhs. For any other scenario please refer section 80EEA and section 24 of the income tax act
• Assumes that you have requisite proofs for the declarations have submitted the same.
• Assumes donation under section 80G of income tax act.
• Assumes your EPF contribution (employer and self) + NPS contribution (employer and self) + PPF (Public Provident Fund) does not exceed INR 7.5 lakhs in a financial year.

Why have I made this?
I saw a lot of folks get confused while selecting their tax regime for their ITR filing, so I made a regime selector online tool which primarily targets salaried individuals, simplifying the process which is insanely complicated in the GOI website.
Also, as a product manager I also wanted to understand the developer's perspective at things and how I can make the entire implementation process efficient and learn a few things in the process. Non-tech folks get a lot of flak for not understanding the other side of things and I wanted to see how the translation between what the requirement is and how much effort goes into the actual implementation. It's simple(r) for me to put the requirements on a paper but to actually make it work is an entirely different thing. One of developer friends put me up to the task and she encouraged me to see if I can train myself and make something workable.
What have I used?
This is a simple application which I have made using React and Material UI library. There is no user data collected so I never imagined it to need a back end for CRUD applications. It took me almost a year to re-learn programming. I learnt JS, then React and the entire MERN stack and this entire project took me about 2-3 months with work. Understanding various acts of the IT act and simplifying it took me about a month or so.
