2023.05.21 20:45 Seadragon1983 The Charlotte Hornets/Bobcats/Hornets (again): The GREATEST Legacy of Failure
Oh, to be a fly on the wall when the NBA announced that Charlotte would get a franchise and what would become the greatest failures ever... not just in the NBA, but in all sports. This historical look will go through the entire process of this roaring dumpster fire of a franchise. But first, we got to jump into the nearest DeLorean and back to 1985, where this story begins.
1985: The NBA is looking into expansion and one man, George Shinn, wanted to get in on this gravy train. An entrepreneur from Kannapolis (shout out to the Cannon Ballers!), he knew the history of hoops in North Carolina - the state is well known for college hoops and for the ABA's Carolina Cougars. They had some success before the team moved to St. Louis, became the Spirits of St. Louis and thanks to some legal trickery, the owners got lucky on their deal... a deal so good that it makes Bobby Bonilla's deal look like peanuts. People had their doubts, but Shinn had a trump card... a nice shiny trump card - the Charlotte Coliseum (the old one, mind you. The new one is now known as the Bojangles Coliseum). This new arena would have 24,000 people, the largest arena to host an NBA team at that time.
1987: The trump card worked. David Stern gave Mr. Shinn the call he was waiting for. "Congrats, young man. Your city is going to have an NBA team starting next season. Get ready." The original plan was to name the team the Spirit, but the fans chose another name: Hornets. This stems from James Cornwallis, a British general who captured Charlotte during the Revolutionary War but noted that the town was a "Hornets nest of rebellion". They would also introduce teal to the world of colors in sports and became a very popular color throughout the late 80's and early 90's thanks to them (the San Jose Sharks would help as well, but that's down the road) and also bring in pinstripes to their jerseys. If nothing else, they were fashion forward.
1988: The first season was what you expect from most expansion teams - not good. They went 20-62 on the season. Not great... better then their expansion compatriots in Miami, though. The big highlight of this season? Beating Chicago at home in MJ's first professional game in North Carolina... and on a buzzer beater as well.
1989: 19 wins and finishing below expansion Minnesota in the Western Conference. Yuck... here's a Rookie of the Year award for J.R. Reid to help soothe the pain.
1990: Hey, 26 wins this season. You'll finally moving up...
1991: Again, moving up. 31 wins on the season and another Rookie of the Year award. This time, Larry Johnson got the award... Nice work, Grandmama.
1992: The steady improvement season after season has finally paid off - the Hornets are playoff bound for the first time ever (cue the confetti and air horns) thanks to yet another standout rookie in Alonzo Mourning. He finished in 2nd place for Rookie of the Year behind some guy named Shaq... hm, nothing to worry about, he'll never be good. Either way, this season was very successful
1992 Eastern Conference 1st Round: Finishing in 5th place overall, the Hornets got Boston in the first round. Not a bad match-up to start with. Game 1 didn't go Charlotte's way despite Kendall Gill and Alonzo Mourning dropping 30 each in the loss. This was all the motivation they needed... Charlotte would take Game 2 in double OT, evening up the series at 1 game apiece heading back to Charlotte. Game 3 was all Hornets as they drop kicked the C's by 30. Game 4 was close, but Charlotte hung on and for the first time in franchise history, they won a playoff series. Nothing could stop them now...
1992 Eastern Conference Semifinals: ...except for the New York Knicks. New York had their number and took the series 4 games to 1. That lone win was in Charlotte, so there is something to be proud of here.
1993: Ever have a sugar high? You know what happens afterwards, right?? Yep... the sugar crash. The Hornets, high off of their trip to the conference semifinals last season, had their sugar crash and missed out on the playoffs.
1994: Free from the sugar crash, the Hornets recovered and made the playoffs again. Unlike last time, the Bulls would stop them in the 1st Round with a 3 games to 1 series victory. Sounds like MJ wasn't all that happy when Charlotte won in 1988.
1995: Back to .500, back to the sugar crash.
1996: What a season. 54 wins, the most in franchise history; one of your players won the MVP Award in the All-Star Game; your GM won Executive of the Year. Nothing can ruin this... OH MY. What are the Knicks doing?!? Oh, oh, oh lord. Hide yo wife, hide yo kids... because New York is violating them. Oh, no. Can I get cleanup on Aisle 5 here?
1997: Fresh off that cheek clapping, the Hornets would return to the postseason - the first back-to-back playoff trip in franchise history. After taking care of Atlanta in the first round, they ran into a brick wall named the Chicago Bulls.
1998: The strike shrunk the season down to fifty games. Didn't stop the Hornets from getting to .500 and all, but it wasn't enough for the playoffs.
1999: Back to the playoffs and back to being a punching bag... this time, it's Philadelphia that beats you down. Hey, at least it's not Chicago or New York, am I right?
2000: Another playoff trip for them. Nice work... another 1st round win, and another loss the conference semifinals. This time, it was to Milwaukee. Even worst? Charlotte was up 3-2 on the Bucks before they blew the last two games.
2001: Despite the good showings for the Hornets, things were looking bleak for the franchise. The city said they weren't going to give the franchise a brand new arena and the franchise said "Screw you guys, I'm heading to New Orleans." The owner, George Shinn, became a pariah in town after being found not guilty of sexual assault (pro level dumb ass move if there was ever one...) and the Coliseum, once one of the toughest places to play in the NBA for road teams, became an empty nest full of angry fans. Still, the Hornets made the playoffs and defeated Orlando in the first round before losing to New Jersey in the Conference Semifinals. The loss in Game 5 was the end of an era...
2002-2004: For the next two seasons, Charlotte would be quiet... but there was something on the horizon. To avoid the same pickle that befell the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns, the NBA opened their minds to putting a team in Charlotte for the 2004 season provided they could get a new arena. The winning bid came from BET founder Robert Johnson, who paid $300 million to join the league - a far cry from what expansion fees look like in other leagues today. The nickname would be Bobcats, which is different... The original planned nickname was going to be the Flight, but the name was considered to be too abstract by the owner... oh, and there was also connotations to the Iraq War as well. Yeah... don't want to touch that one. The Bobcats name made sense, though: Charlotte already had a cat themed team in the Carolina Panthers of the NFL and, well.. the owner's name is 'Bob'. Work that out on your own, man.
2004: ..and we are back! The Bobcats made their debut and had the same expansion team woes that befell the original Hornets - 18 wins on the year. Woof... but, here's another Rookie of the Year Award to celebrate.
2005-2008: Wallowing in misery is no way to live your life, Charlotte. Come on, get up. You got to making something of yourselves.
2009: There we go. For the first time ever, the Bobcats made the playoffs... only to get swept out by Orlando and a broom shoved up their proverbial butts.
2010: Back to misery we go.
2011: Another strike would shrink the season down to 66 games. Unlike the O.G. Hornets, who did just fine in their strike ridden season... the Bobcats were about as useful as a broken down Pinto in the middle of the Interstate. 7 wins. That's it. 7-59. Their winning percentage was the worst in NBA history. The 1972 76ers were better... Hell, the 1899 Cleveland Spiders were better. There is no getting up from this debacle.
2012: Well, 21 wins isn't great... but compared to what that epic dumpster fire was last season, this is a major improvement.
2013: In what would be the final season as the Bobcats, they would make the playoffs... only to swept out by Miami and a broom shoved up their proverbial butts yet again. But, there was something good on the horizon - the owners bought the history and records of the original Hornets name from New Orleans, who became the Pelicans. This would be the return of the prodigal son - the Hornets are back.
2014: The Hornets are reborn and they don't do much. 33 wins is okay, I guess.
2015: The Hornets would return to the playoffs and even win a few games... three, to be exact. But, Miami defeated them once again. Thankfully, no brooms were involved.
2016-Today: Since then... wallowing in mediocrity with only two Sportmanship Awards and another Rookie of the Year Award to show for it. Meh.

| Here's a close up look of the two shirts we got from the Dallas, TX show. They were $45 each, $90.00 total! The cotton quality is VERY nice and thick and the graphic is screen-printed on. The no color of the tees has a vintage, washed look. Bought Large & XL. They run true to size. Someone I was with bought a shirt and a pair of the $80 jersey shorts. Shorts say, "Market Run" on them. They're classic, black basketball shorts and the brand was Champion! submitted by dagoodnameswuztaken to Larry_June [link] [comments] |
