This will be another busy weekend in Macon, with First Friday happening tonight and live music playing all around town as well. Here are a few of the concerts taking place this Friday and Saturday (more are listed in the full article on the Middle Georgia Times website).

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3
FAIRLY WEATHERED FRIENDS AND THE PRICE IS RITE AT BEARFOOT TAVERN (7 - 11 p.m.)
Fairly Weathered Friends is a band from Macon whose music that is a mix of rock originals and "mashed up" cover songs. Tripp Spears and Matthew will also be debuting their newest project named "the Price is riTE". Barefoot Tavern is a popular gastropub and beer garden as well as a music venue at times.
ROOSEVELT COLLIER AT GRANT'S LOUNGE (9 p.m. - 12 a.m.)
Roosevelt Collier has the iconic nickname "The Dr." and he expertly plays the pedal steel guitar. The Dr. has performed at festivals with major bands like the Allman Brothers, Lost Lobos, and others. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online.
ALL THE LOCALS AT THE HUMMINGBIRD (10 p.m. - 2 a.m.)
All The Locals was described as a "Soulternative" band by Buzzfeed and they play a mix of soul, rock, and blues music. They also have a horn section. The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom's cover charge is $5 at the door.
SISTER SANDOZ AND TOMBSTONE BLUE AT JBA (10 p.m.)
Sister Sandoz has been described as "Tori Amos meets Tool" who started out in 2013 as a band named 6L6. At some point during their music career the band changed their name to Sister Sandoz after the unique middle name of lead singer, Becky Sandoz Carlisle. Carlisle is also a classically trained mezzo-soprano but is just as talented at screaming out lyrics to heavy metal songs. Tombstone Blue is a heavy metal band from Perry. JBA does not charge a cover charge and has a wide range of cocktails and specialty drinks.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4
NICK MALLOY AT THE SOCIETY GARDEN (8 - 11 p.m.)
Nick Malloy is a country music singer and songwriter from Macon. Malloy had a very serious car accident that almost took his life in 2013. He refused to let his serious injuries stop him from writing and performing music. If Malloy's last name seems familiar to you it is probably because his father is Frank Malloy news broadcaster at 13WMAZ. Society Garden usually charges a cover charge at the door that starts a bit before their live music performances.
THE SHADE TREES WITH JUSTIN CUTAWAY AT GRANT'S LOUNGE (9 p.m.)
Daniel NeSmith of the band "Back City Woods" formed The Shade Trees. This band is described as a "Southern Eclectic Musical Experience". Justin Cutaway is originally from Pennsylvania but has been performing in Macon for more than ten years. Tickets cost $10 and they can be purchased online.
RESOLUTION RUINER PARTY WITH DJ LUPO AT THE HUMMINGBIRD (10 p.m. - 2 a.m.)
If you haven't already broken all of your New Year's resolutions, The Hummingbird is throwing a party so you can go ahead and get it out of the way. DJ Lupo will be performing live and Mercer University students with a student ID over 21 will get in free. The Hummingbird Stage and Taproom's cover charge for everyone else is $5 at the door.

Pitts, GA – On Friday, the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office announced two separate pit bull attacks. Both victims were female, and one attack resulted in death. Doris McBurse, 66-years old, was announced dead at the scene. “The victim and her husband were the owners of the pit bull that had broken free from its chain,” states a release from the sheriff’s office. The attack occurred at the victim’s home in the 2600 block of Pearce Road. The attacking dog was a “blue pit bull.”
WMAZ spoke to Wilcox County Coroner Janice Brown, who said the pit bull belonged to McBurse’s husband. She apparently escaped to her car for safety, but then died of her injuries, Brown said. They found her body inside the car. The couple had owned that blue pit bull -- there are several on the McBurse property -- for about three or four years. No one knows why the dog attacked her. The animal was surrendered to the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office and euthanized.
Over a dozen photographs published on her husband’s Facebook page, Harris McBurse, shows that he had been breeding pit bulls for some time. The adult pit bulls, a red nose and blue nose, are seen staked out on chains. He advertised both colors for sale. “Top of the line puppies! Very beautiful and with plenty of fire,” he stated in a June 1, 2019 Facebook post. He also called the “Daddy” a “blue pit”, which could be “Flash the blue,” and the “mother” a “sandy red” pit bull.

Georgia high school students spell out N-word on shirts at football game

A group of Georgia high school students spelt out the N-word on shirts at a football game.
The five students at West Laurens High School sparked outrage among residents of Laurens County, local news station WGXA first reported. The teenagers wrote letters on each of their shirts that spelt the racial slur and then wore them to a football match against another school on 16 September.
Images of the group began circulating on social media, with shocked parents bringing them to the attention of school officials and local media.
“To see a picture like that in 2022 is just something that you never want to see because I feel like our ancestors fought so hard for us to get here today, and I feel like it’s just super-disrespectful to see a picture like that,” Quadravious Johnson, who graduated in 2020 from a school in the district, told 13WMAZ.
The Laren County School District issued a statement decrying the teenagers’ actions, but members of the community said the students should be disciplined.
“We do not support, nor condone, any offensive actions of this nature. We are truly disappointed in the choices of these students,” the statement read.
“The environment and teaching at West Laurens High School foster love and respect among our students for each other. What is observed in this picture is completely misaligned with the values of our school and community. Rest assured, the incident is being investigated.”

Terrence James, whose son attends West Laurens High School, told 13WMAX that the group of teens call themselves the “Rowdy Raiders.”
“[My son] said, ‘Daddy, they asked me to hold a shovel and one of them called me the n-word.’ I was like, ‘What?’” Mr James told the outlet.

In the TikTok video posted by u/mauryssa, the Black woman can be heard telling a white man, “What the f**k are you talking about? And you not gonna talk to me. I am gonna sit here, I am gonna finish my food and then I am gonna leave.” The white man angrily replied, “You are gonna go to jail”. The Black woman also replied, “I am OK with it, I have got a lot of money in my account.”
The video then jumps to the Black woman accusing a white woman of throwing a box at her, saying, “I asked to turn it down, she snapped at me and she threw a whole box at me.” The white woman tells her if she does not like it, she can leave the place. The other white men sitting there can also be heard asking her, “What you doing in a white place like this?”
The Black woman replied, “I am in a white place like this because I am here to play pool. This is the only place where there is a pool table. So, that’s what I am doing at a white place.” The man then told her to buy her own pool table if she wants to play. “I am racist and I don’t care,” he says.

Georgia County Bizarrely Kills Early Voting Because It Would Mean More People Could Vote Alternet

Georgia has a slew of competitive statewide races for the first time in more than a decade. Around the state, battles are brewing over early voting, which would allow more people—especially working class people who typically have to work on election day—the opportunity to vote.
After Georgia's populous Dekalb County moved to open up October 26 th as a Sunday early voting day, the state's embattled Republican Governor Nathan Deal blasted the move as “partisan,” while a GOP state senator said he wanted to “eliminate this election loophole.”
This week, Georgia conservatives on the Bibb County Board of Elections killed a proposal similar to Dekalb's that would've opened up an extra Sunday for voting. Their excuse? Early voting would mean more...voting, according to Republican board member Rinda Wilson:
Rinda Wilson, a Republican, called it "a partisan thing" backed by Democrats: "There have been six states that have been targeted, Georgia being one of them, that this would be a way just to wring out every last vote."
The fights in Dekalb, Bibb, and elsewhere in Georgia have turned into a full-blown war on voting rights, as Republicans fear that the state's shifting demographics will result in the end of GOP control of the state.

Georgia lawmakers pass controversial 'guns everywhere' bill MSNBC

The Georgia House passed a sweeping gun bill late Thursday night that allows firearms in bars, nightclubs, school classrooms and certain government buildings that lack security personnel or devices.
Lawmakers moved the bill through the House during the last hour of the night on Thursday, meeting their midnight deadline before the end of the current legislative session. If signed by the state’s governor, the law will give religious leaders the option to “opt-in” to allow guns on their worship premises, where violators cannot be arrested or fined more than $100 each. Additionally, it could grant citizens the right to carry firearms in bars, nightclubs, libraries, sports facilities, senior citizen and youth centers, and on K-12 premises by authorized administrators and teachers.
The law would also allow permit-holders to carry guns into Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in airports with no penalty, which is a reduction from the maximum felony punishment currently in place. Individuals who claim ownership of a permit would be allowed to leave the security area without consequence, and officials could not detain them or ask to see firearms documentation.
The legislators’ decision is not only a “slap in the face” for victims of gun violence in Georgia, but also for all American sufferers, said Brian Malte, senior national policy director for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
“We know more guns is not a solution to gun violence, so it’s a very sad day in Georgia,” he told msnbc.
Though supporters are pleased with the approval of the bill, many wish it treated religious establishments similarly to bars, nightclubs and municipalities. The government does not belong in church affairs, said Jerry Henry, executive director of Georgia Carry. His group is a main proponent of the bill, also backed by the National Rifle Association (NRA).
“[The bill] means that if you are one who likes to protect yourself, that you have a whole lot more places to protect yourself. It means that if you’re a bad guy, you might want to think about going into some of those places,” Henry told msnbc.
Among other provisions, the law also changes Georgia’s self-defense measures by removing the penalty for possessing a firearm in an unauthorized location. If passed, the legislation will provide security to individuals carrying guns in unauthorized locations, under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and without a license in locations currently prohibited.
“There are some states that take guns anywhere, anytime, and virtually for everyone, and they do it in piecemeal. Georgia has decided to do it all in one bill,” Malte said.
Opponents of the bill refer to the measure as an expansion of Stand Your Ground because it has the potential to give felons and other individuals currently banned from owning a gun permission to carry in unauthorized areas. George Zimmerman’s acquittal last summer in the shooting death of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin brought renewed national attention to the Stand Your Ground defense.
Georgia lawmakers, who passed the bill Thursday by a 112-58 vote, will now present the legislation to Republican Gov. Nathan Deal, who plans to run for re-election on Nov. 4. Previously, Deal supported loosening gun restrictions, which earned him an “A” rating from the NRA and an endorsement for the GOP primary runoff election in 2010.
The bill is part of the “Safe Carry Protection Act,” which, until earlier this week, contained both a bill from the House and a revised bill from the Senate, as msnbc previously reported. Americans for Responsible Solutions deemed the original House bill “the most extreme gun bill in America.” The Senate version, however, offered fewer allowances for guns in certain places, including the opt-in provision not only to church leaders, but also to bar owners and municipal officials.
State senators passed the bill earlier this week before it went to the House. But a lack of transparency left many residents and organizations puzzled about which measures were included and which were removed from the legislation. Ultimately, House lawmakers took out language that would reduce the penalty for a permit-holder caught carrying a gun on a college campus from a misdemeanor to a fine.
“We were pleased that the final bill did not include the guns on college campuses and guns in churches provisions. But the fact remains this bill moves Georgia out of the mainstream,” Pia Carusone, executive director of Americans for Responsible Solutions, said in a comment. “Thousands of Georgians and tens of thousands of Americans will continue to show they are tired of the gun lobby advancing its extreme agenda at the expense of their families’ safety.”
House legislators passed a similar bill last year, but it failed in the state Senate. Until this week, legislators had not passed a gun bill since 2010, when they repealed the state’s public-gathering law and replaced it with a more defined list of places off-limits for carrying firearms. Georgia had the highest number of gun deaths per capita among the 50 states that same year, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence.
Opponents view the the current bill as a disturbance for places of worship, establishments that serve alcohol and school campuses where parents expect their children to remain safe.
Some institutions, including the Roman Catholic Bishops of Georgia, declined to comment on Friday until they analyzed and determined the effects of the possible changes.
Parts of the Georgia bill have surfaced individually in other states – including Missouri, Oklahoma and Tennessee – as the national debate about gun rights continues in the wake of the 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Oklahoma legislators passed a bill this week that would allow any college, university or technology school to establish a policy to permit license-carriers to possess firearms on campus. In Idaho, Republican Gov. Butch Otter last week signed into law a bill that prohibits state colleges and universities from regulating guns.
Ninety-one percent of Georgians supported mandatory background checks for all gun buyers, according to a poll published in March 2013 in the wake of the massacre in Newtown, Conn.
Colin Goddard, senior policy advocate for Mayors Against Illegal Guns and a former Georgia resident, told msnbc: “You get to the point where you want to ask: ‘Who exactly are they doing this for?’”

Georgia Republican Proposes Bill That Would Give Sex Offenders Access To Schools and Playgrounds

A Georgia Republican who is in his first week of office has proposed a bill that would give sex offenders access to anywhere children gather, including schools and playgrounds.
According to the Cherokee Tribune:
Brand new state Rep. Sam Moore (R-Macedonia) is pushing a sweeping law that would allow registered sex offenders to go anywhere they want — even to schools.
Moore, in his first week in office, has turned in a bill that would overturn the crime of loitering and make it so registered sex offenders who aren’t otherwise barred from going to schools or places children gather could go to those places freely.
“I am OK with that,” Moore said Thursday, adding that he meant only those who were off parole and not barred from those places. “The reason I’m OK with that is the assumption is they have done their time. If they’re still a danger to society, they should not be free. … Am I saying it’s not creepy? It’s definitely creepy.”
What kind of person decides that their first legislative act in their new office is going to be a bill that gives sex offenders access to children? It isn’t as if this was an unintended consequence. Rep. Moore admits that he is fine with sex offenders having access to children.
There is a difference between limited government, and dangerously stupid.
Giving predators access to children based on what you think the Fifth Amendment says is an act of placing ideology ahead of the welfare of children. The offenders that Moore is talking about aren’t people who made a mistake like many drug offenders are. These individuals are predators, and there is no known cure for child predators.
I am all for giving people who do their time a second chance, but the restrictions as they relate to sexual predators exist for a reason.
Moore’s bill is the result of blind ideology trumping common sense. There is no way it will ever pass, and by offering such an outlandish bill, Rep. Moore has made it certain that he will not win a second term.

Plus he has charges in Ben Hill County to face
Duke was found guilty of concealing Grinstead's death but was acquitted of murder charges. A judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
Duke has already served five years, the ruling by the board means he will serve the remaining five years of his sentence.
The other suspect in the Grinstead case, Bo Dukes had his trial pushed back in Ben Hill County.
The Ben Hill Court Clerk's office said the soonest the trial can begin is in late September. It was initially reported it could happen as soon as June 22.

He's running against moderate democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock.
Senator Warnock's resume looks like this

• He's worked as a pastor since the 1990s
• Pastor serving as senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta since 2005 (The same church that the reverend Doctor) Martin Luther King Jr. served as co-pastor at from 1960-1968)
• He served as an activist to expand Medicaid using the Affordable Care Act in 2014
• He's worked to expand the ACA and worked to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights act.
• He chaired the New Georgia Project, a nonpartisan organization focused on voter registration
• He's pro gun control, against the death penalty, pro-LGBTQ rights, pro-welfare and pro-voting rights. All of these things he's been consistent on and worked for as a senator and a pastor.
• He's had one marriage and one divorce. He's a father of two.

He's a moderate Dem who has spent a lifetime working in religious work and now politics, and for some reason he's the likely underdog against a GOP candidate who's used violence and lies in his personal and professional life for decades.
I don't think anyone who participates here is voting in Georgia, but this is emblematic of the type of candidates the GOP is putting forward. With a senate seat Herschel Walker would represent more than just Georgia. Why is the GOP putting this guy forward?

I was working on getting my CCW when I saw this article stateing that Georgia had just signed Constitutional Carry into law.
Does this mean I no longer need a CCW?
Assuming yes to the above:
Does not having a CCW put me at any greater risk if I have to use my gun outside my home?
Are there any advantages to having a CCW if my state has Constitutional Carry?

Trial starts for the man accused of murdering Fort Valley State University student, Anitra Gunn.
Her boyfriend, Demarcus Little, is scheduled to go on trial this week – two years after her death by strangulation.
In Feb. 2020, Gunn’s father Christopher drove to Fort Valley from Atlanta to file a missing person’s report. Three days later, searchers found her body in the woods in Crawford County.
Police charged Little with malice murder and criminal damage to property. Investigators say he slashed her tires and threw a brick through her windows nine days before she disappeared.
Lawyers in the case predict the trial will take about a week.
