Julian McMahon, 'Profiler's' Distant Detective
Television: The Australian-Born Actor Has Succeeded By Appealing Equally to Men and Women.

Julian McMahon can be a perfect gentleman. And he can be a total goof.
During a break in his trailer on location with "Profiler," the NBC dramatic series in which he plays FBI Det. John Grant, the strikingly handsome Australian-born actor dissolves into a mock, aristocratic mode.
"I love life. I love the whole breathing thing," he declares, drawing in his cheeks, rolling his eyes. "I love breathing in, I love breathing out."
Earlier, on the set, located this day in downtown Los Angeles in an old meat-packing house configured to look like an artist's loft, he greets visitors with kisses on both cheeks.
"Did they roll out the red carpet for you?" he asks, smiling brilliantly, gesturing broadly as if to say, "All this is mine, welcome to my palace."
His "palace" is the less-than-glamorous warehouse floor, packed with cast and crew—and McMahon is not the star of the show or the center of attention. But McMahon—his over-the-top personality and 6-foot-2 frame aside—has the kind of acting chops that colleagues say could help him emerge from "Profiler's" largely ensemble cast.
"When you meet him, there is an innate charm and likability, a 'regular guy' kind of thing," says Stephen Kronish, who joined "Profiler" as executive producer this fall. "He has the ability and the physical package that casting people look for. If you can get men to want to go out and have a beer with you and get women to want to jump into bed with you, that's a pretty good mix. He's got that quality."
While many Americans may not be familiar with McMahon, the 30-year-old Sydney native is a household name in his home country and the United Kingdom. His father, Sir William McMahon, spent a lifetime in politics, the high point as prime minister of Australia from 1971 to 1972. And in the early '90s, the actor starred in "Home and Away," a successful Australian soap opera with a huge international audience.
Then too there was the media swarm that followed McMahon during his courtship of and marriage (in 1994) to his "Home and Away" co-star, Australian singer-actress Dannii Minogue, sister of pop star, Kylie. They divorced three years later, as her career took her to London and his to New York, where he landed a role as Ian Rain on NBC's daytime drama "Another World."
Although McMahon, who has been with "Profiler" since its debut in 1996, has a key role, the way his character is constructed in the high drama formula doesn't allow much opportunity for him to flex his acting muscles. For three seasons, the show has followed the lives of forensic psychologist Dr. Samantha "Sam" Waters (Ally Walker) and the FBI's Atlanta-based Violent Crimes Task Force, which investigates serial killing crimes across the country. Sam's mentor, Bailey Malone (Robert Davi), heads the task force, which includes McMahon's character.
The thriller's hook is that Sam possesses the ability to "think in pictures" in order to "profile"—and thereby identify—this very specific breed of killers.
McMahon's character can be hot-headed or sober at the flip of a switch. There is his scowling intensity when he's face to face with--or gunning down--a psycho killer. But there's not much emotional range for the detective, who's a professionally driven loner. John Grant has a bit of sarcastic humor, and he more often than not goes for the jugular rather than the niceties of interrogation techniques, but that's about it.
Generally, the character is immutable, unreadable. However, there have been moments when McMahon's been able to convey sensitivity.
In one episode this season, a serial killer has a gun pointed at Grant's head. She's a cop who's been killing--and castrating--men who don't comply with police investigations. Forced to his knees, Grant gives an impassioned, but calculated, speech: "You were everything a father could want in a daughter, but that wasn't good enough . . . " his eyes searching, his voice cracking. He closes his eyes for a moment, and then she turns the gun on herself.
McMahon actually has little in common with the enigma he has been given to portray on "Profiler."
"He's very sensitive, full of enthusiasm and positive energy," notes Davi, who adds that he's formed an older brother type of relationship with his co-star. He recounts how McMahon spent time with his family and young daughters when Davi's wife was ill. "He's like the Australian Roberto Benigni, with warmth and generosity."
"Baywatch" star Brooke Burns, who has been dating McMahon for five months, echoes the sentiment.
"He's very masculine and, at the same time, very tender-hearted," says the 21-year-old actress. "He really cares about people, he's genuine."
On the set, in counterpoint to the scene being taped--in which a female agent discovers she is being stalked--McMahon is hamming it up off camera, pretending to swallow pills on the kitchen counter, slashing the air with a kitchen knife Zorro-style, kicking up his heels.
When the scene is over, he slips into a Mafioso character: "It was good for me. Was it good for you?"
"Part of this job as an actor is to look as intense as you can," McMahon says later. "I have to laugh. I get the giggles, like back in school."
At least once this season he's been allowed to laugh—during a guest spot on the NBC sitcom "Will & Grace," playing a steaming hunk who rekindles Grace's emotional fire.
"Creatively, it was fascinating," he says. "They're really spontaneous on the set."
On the Saturday following the taping, McMahon is at his Hollywood home, an eclectic place located directly underneath the Hollywood sign.
"As a kid I didn't even know about Hollywood. I was into school, sports, friends and my family," he says, his speech still slightly flavored by Australia. "But then I remember going and seeing 'Star Wars' and thinking that was amazing, that for two hours, it put me totally somewhere else."
The second of three children, he traveled at an early age to places like Buckingham Palace and the White House and was at home when his parents entertained. Though the family was close, McMahon did not spend much time with his much older and politically involved father. That changed when his father was diagnosed with cancer. The two formed a tight bond until his death in 1988.
"It was difficult because I had just found this best friend, an 80-year-old man, and he was just taken from me," he recalls. "My dad was the kind of person who would treat everybody the same, a really wonderful trait that he passed on to me without my knowing it."
He also inherited his father's sense of humor, according to McMahon's mother Lady Sonia, a leading society figure in Australia.
"Julian was always joking around and the life of the party," she says by phone. "Not that I ever thought it would lead to something like this."
There were hints. McMahon started modeling when he was 17, after a university stint. Heading off for Los Angeles, New York, Milan, Rome and Paris, he wanted to make a name for himself. He went from modeling to the daytime soaps, then prime time. He hopes serious movie roles will be next. During the 1997 series hiatus, McMahon appeared in "In Quiet Night," an independent film that never made it to theatrical release, and this summer, he will continue reading for feature film parts.
"I hate labels, but people put you in a box or category, that's how they are. But you can't allow yourself to get in that box," he says.
Nevertheless, for a while most people will connect McMahon with the distant Det. Grant. This week, NBC announced that "Profiler" would be back for another season in the fall.
Part of the network's "thrillogy" Saturday evening lineup, the show has been a hit among adults 18-49 and women 25-54, and the 1997-98 season gave NBC its first time period win in five years among adults 18-49 on the night. But McMahon knows that the television life cycle can be short—and he's prepared for his run on "Profiler" to end.
Says McMahon: "You have to have the ability to pick yourself up and go on when things don't go right."

For example, we know that Cementoss’ real name is Ken Ishiyama (石山堅), but Ectoplasm’s real name is unknown. So I thought I would compile a list of characters, whether heroes, villains, or neutral, whose real names are not revealed in any form of media, whether they are anime, manga, game, or light novels. Keep in mind that I made up all of the ideal real names by myself (with my limited knowledge of the Japanese language). We’ll wait if Kohei Horikoshi decided on some of the names to be designated as official real names, so there could be a possibility that if a real name is already revealed and is different from mine.

Fourth Kind: Shugo Shinomiya (四宮修悟, しのみや しゅうご)
Shi (四) means 4, Miya (宮) means temple or palace, Shu or Osamu (修) means discipline, and Go or Satoru (悟) means enlightenment. The Shi in Shinomiya refers to the fact that he has 4 arms in his appearance. Not a Kaguya reference.
Takeshita: Yoshiyuki Takeshita (竹下吉幸, たけした よしゆき)
This character in the manga and anime is named that way, which is an actual surname, which means I would give him his given name only. Take (竹) means bamboo, Shita (下) means below or under, Yoshi (吉) means good luck or joy, and Yuki (幸) means happiness or fortune. The Take in Takeshita is likely a reference to his unnamed bamboo quirk.
Eel Boy: Teruki Unagi (宇凪輝樹, うなぎ てるき)

Gyges: Gosuke Tezawa (手澤郷輔, てざわ ごうすけ)
Knowing that the two guards present during the Assault on Tartarus are brothers, we can assume that they share the same surname. Te (手) means hand or arm, and Zawa or Sawa (澤) means swamp, referring to their appearance.
For Briareos: Go (郷) means village or hometown, and Saku (作) means make or prepare.
For Gyges: Go (郷) means village or hometown, and Suke (輔) means help or assistance.
Public Safety Commission President: Yasuko Hoki (保喜安子, ほき やすこ)
Ho (保) means protection or guarantee, Ki (喜) means delight or rejoice, Yasu (安) means peaceful, and Ko (子) means child. Combining both the initial kanji characters of both her surname and given name would mean security in Japanese, Hoan (保安), referring to her position in the Hero Public Safety Commission.
2nd user: Hayao Nikaido (二階堂速雄, にかいどう はやお)
Ni (二) means 2, Kai (階) means story, stair or floor, Do (堂) means temple or hall, Haya (速) means quick or fast, and O (雄) means male. For the given name Hayao, the Haya in Hayao is the same one in his quirk "Gearshift" in Japanese, Hensoku (変速). The surname Nikaido has the kanji character for 2, Ni (二), referencing the fact that he is the 2nd user of OFA. Something I would like to share - the first time I encountered the surname Nikaido came from a staff member whose name was credited with that surname in most of Mob Psycho 100's episodes in the end credits. As soon as I saw the name 二階堂 in the end credits, that gave me an idea to use that surname as a what-if name for the 2nd user, so that's how I arrived with that surname. I never intended to name him after an anime staff member whatsoever.
3rd user: Sanjiro Undo (運道三治郎, うんどう さんじろう)
Un (運) means luck or fortune, Do (道) means road or path, San (三) means 3, Ji (治) means reign or cure, and Ro (郎) means male. The surname is read as "oondo" and not in the English word as it appears to be in romanized form. Also, the aforementioned surname is homophonous with movement in Japanese, Undo (運動), as his quirk Fa Jin is used for to build up kinetic energy by repeating regular motions and store it for later use. Kinetic energy in Japanese is Undo Enerugii (運動エネルギー). The given name Sanjiro has the kanji character for 3, San (三), referencing the fact that he is the 3rd user of OFA.
6th user: Enzo Rokuhara (六原煙造, ろくはら えんぞう)
Roku (六) means 6, Hara (原) means field, En or Kemuri (煙) means smoke, and Zo (造) means create or make. The surname Rokuhara has the kanji character for 6, Roku (六), referencing the fact that he is the 6th user of OFA. The given name Enzo is a reference to his quirk Smokescreen, which would give the character's nickname as En. The surname is also the name of a Japanese railway station in Kanegasaki, Iwate. Interestingly enough, two other characters in the series, whom both of them are villains, are also named after real world Japanese railway stations. The villains in question are Twice and Re-Destro. Wolfram: Shigeki Kinzoku (金続重樹, きんぞく しげき)
Kin (金) means metal, Zoku (続) means to continue, Shige (重) means heavy, and Ki (樹) means tree or wood. The surname Kinzoku is homophonous to Kinzoku (金属), in which the latter kanji character, Zoku (属), means genus. However, the Zoku in Kinzoku (金続) means to continue, referring to how he manipulates and creates metal continuously in combat. The Shige in Shigeki refers to how generally heavy metal is. Not to mention that his villain name is named after tungsten, whose symbol W means wolfram, and it is one of the heaviest naturally stable elements you can carry or hold (but factually speaking, uranium IS the heaviest element in terms of natural stability).
Nine: Kisho Terunaga (照永起昇), てるなが きしょう)
Teru (照) means shine or illuminate, Naga or Ei (永) means eternity, Ki (起) means rouse or get up, and Sho (昇) means rise up. The Teru in Terunaga likely refers to his intimidating appearance, akin to a god, while Naga likely refers to the fact that he would be invincible like any other villain if he has a great amount of quirks, considering that he is one of the few characters to do so. The given name Kisho is homophonous with weather, Kisho (気象), a reference to his original quirk before amalgamating to All for One, weather manipulation, or Kisho Sosa in Japanese (気象操作).
All for One: Majin Shigaraki (死柄木摩甚, しがらき まじん)
According to All for One himself in a flashback, Shigaraki is his real surname; however, his given name is unknown. Shi (死) means death, Gara (柄) means grip or handle, Ki (木) means tree or wood, Ma (摩) means to scrape or grind, and Jin (甚) means extreme or intense. The given name Majin is homophonous with devil in Japanese, Majin (魔神).
Mustard: Shoki Kitai (北井祥基, きたい しょうき)
Kita (北) means north, I (井) means water well, Sho (祥) means auspicious or good omen, and Ki (基) means fundamentals or basis. The surname Kitai is homophonous with gas in Japanese, Kitai (気体), a reference to his quirk. The given name Shoki is homophonous with miasma in Japanese, Shoki (瘴気), a highly unpleasant or unhealthy smell or vapor, fitting with the properties of his quirk.
Innsmouth: Yakishi Takonuma (蛸沼焼司, たこぬま やきし)
Tako (蛸) means octopus, Numa (沼) means marsh, Yaki (焼) means burnt, and Shi (司) means administer or boss. The Tako in Takonuma is a reference to his appearance, resembling an octopus.
Moonfish: Takanari Habashi (歯橋高成, はばし たかなり)
Ha (歯) means tooth, Hashi (橋) means bridge, Taki (高) means tall or high, Nari (成) means grow or reach. The surname Habashi is a reference to his quirk blade-tooth in Japanese, Shijin (歯刃).
Ending: Shingoki Kurodo (黒道伸剛輝, くろどう しんごうき)

The surname Hoshimiya means star temple or star palace, referring to his villain name. The surname Shiki is homophonous with command, direction, or supervision in Japanese, Shiki (指揮), while the given name Reiji is reverse for command or control in Japanese, Shirei (司令), both referencing his quirk despot.
Kunieda: Ikunobu Kunieda (國枝育伸, くにえだ いくのぶ)
Kuni (國) means country, Eda (枝) means bough or branch, Iku (育) means grow or raise, and Nobu (伸) means to expand or stretch. The villain name Kunieda, which is written in katakana, is an actual surname in Japan, so I had to use the kanji version of that name. The given name Ikunobu means growing and expanding, both of which are referring to his quirk that has the ability to sprout and grow gigantic flowers, spores, and fungus-like plants from the ground.
Gigantomachia: Goro Onikigawa (鬼木川吾郎, おにきがわ ごろう)
Oni or Ki (鬼) means demon, Ki (木) means tree, Kawa or Gawa (川) means river, Go (吾) means I or my, and Ro (郎) means male. The Oni in Onikigawa refers to his demonic appearance, while his given name Goro is a play on the Japanese onomatopoeia Goro Goro (ゴロゴロ), which describes the sound of thunder, earthquake, or other disasters incoming, fitting with his personality during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc.
Iceman: Geten Koriyama (氷山外典, こおりやま げてん)
Kori (氷) means ice, Yama (山) means mountain, Ge or Soto (外) means outside, and Ten or Nori (典) means law. The surname Koriyama is an alternate reading of Hyozan, which means iceberg, fitting with his quirk. The given name Geten means apocrypha, which is a story of unknown author or origin. While Geten is the real name of Iceman, it is unknown if it’s his given name or surname, so randomly assuming that this is his given name, his surname would be unknown, and that explains the surname’s existence. (NOTE: With the recent release of Chapter 387 on May 8, 2023, it was revealed that Geten happened to be from Rei's side, which means that his surname is Himura, and this made him a relative to the Todoroki family members, so his full name is Geten Himura. It was not explicitly stated how Rei, or even the Todoroki family, and Geten were specifically related and just listed their relation as simply "relative". With this revelation, his full name written in Japanese would be 氷叢外典, or in hiragana, ひむら げてん. As of this writing, this is the only entry on the list with a character's officially confirmed full name in the original source, so I would discard my ideal surname in favor of the original source instead.)
Unnamed Cider House leader: Gyokoten Samukawa (寒川凝古天, さむかわ ぎょうこてん)
Samu (寒) means cold, Kawa (川) means river, Gyo (凝) means stiff, Ko or Furu (古) means old or ancient, and Ten (天) means heaven. The surname Samukawa means cold river. The given name Gyokoten is homophonous with freezing point in Japanese - Gyokoten (凝固点). The first kanji of the word Gyo (凝) is the same as in the given name. His alias or villain name was never revealed as well, so Yeti (イエティ) would be a good choice, named after the ape-like creature purported to inhabit the Himalayan mountain range in Asia of the same name.
Keigo's Father: Keiichi Takami (鷹見啓一, たかみ けいいち)
This character in the manga and anime is named that way, which means I would give him his given name only. Taka (鷹) means hawk, Mi (見) means to see, Kei (啓) means disclose, open, or say, and Ichi (一) means 1. The Kei in Keiichi is the same as his son Keigo (啓悟).
Habit Headgear: Takehiko Kito (鬼頭武彦, きとう たけひこ)
Oni or Ki (鬼) means demon, To or Atama (頭) means head, Take (武) means military, and Hiko (彦) means lad or boy. His surname is a reference to his unnerving appearance. Not a Demon Slayer reference.
Giant Villain: Kiichi Otomo (大友毅一, おおとも きいち)

Doro (泥) means mud, Kawa or Gawa (川) means river, So or Hajime (創) means begin or start, and Hei or Pei or Hira (平) means flat. His surname is a reference to his dirty mud-like appearance.
Swordkil: Takeshi Mekajiki (目梶木丈士, めかじき たけし)
Me (目) means eye, Kaji (梶) means sculling oar, Ki (木) means tree or wood, Take (丈) means height or stature, and Shi (士) means samurai. His surname is homophonous with swordfish in Japanese, Mekajiki (眼梶木), which is a reference to his unnamed sword quirk, as well as his villain name, though close.

The Mother of Quirks: Seiko Yotsubashi (四ツ橋聖子, よつばし せいこ)
Knowing the Mother of Quirks is the mother of Chikara Yotsubashi (四ツ橋主税), I would give her given name only. Yotsu (四ツ) means 4, Hashi (橋) means bridge, Sei (聖) means holy, and Ko (子) means child. I chose Seiko as her given name for a reason, because her name, when Romanized, is an anagram for quirk in Japanese, Kosei (個性), since she was the first person to use the word "quirk" to describe meta abilities.
Shie Hassaikai boss: Takahito Saijo (斎条崇人, さいじょう たかひと)
Sai (斎) means purification, Jo (条) means article, Taka (崇) means respect or revere, and To or Hito (人) means person. The Sai in Saijo is the same character in Shie Hassaikai (死穢八斎會), while his given name fits given with his position during the time he founded the organization years before Kai Chisaki succeeded him.
Hood: Tsuyoshi Aida (会田強士, さいじょう たかひと)
Ai or Kai (会) means meeting or association, Ta or Da (田) means rice field, Tsuyo (強) means strong, and Shi (士) means samurai. His name fits since he used to be a street punk who made a living as a fierce underground fighter before being turned into a Nomu by the Doctor.
Gunga Mountain Villa Paranormal Liberation Front Commander: Kairo Dendo (傳堂会呂, でんどう かいろ)
Den (傳) means propagate or transmit, Do (堂) means temple or hall, Kai or Ai (会) means meeting or association, and Ro (呂) means spine or backbone. His surname is homophonous with electric or conduction in Japanese, Dendo (電動) or Dendo (伝導) respectively, while his given name is homophonous with circuit in Japanese, Kairo (回路), both referring to his quirk amplivolt, which can conduct and amplify electricity within their body, being able to release it afterwards. Ironic that he was never given a name, yet his quirk, as well as his ultimate move, is named in the manga and anime.

I just watched the episode where Larry gets kicked out of the country club. The interview with the new country club full of republicans was hilarious.

After a few years of examining my relationship with alcohol, I’m committing to a full year of sobriety. I’ve explored my relationship with alcohol quite a bit over the past few years (tracked my daily drinking for a year, did some dry Januarys, etc.) but believe that for me, a long term full sobriety is the right move. I don’t consider myself an alcoholic but I definitely drink more than the average. I probably clock in somewhere on the 2-3 drinks a day average so this will be a meaningful change in lifestyle. I’m a week in today.
Why? For me, it’s largely to answer the questions of “How much better will I function in all capacities if I cut out booze (and weed)? And do the benefits outweigh any costs the result as a byproduct of sobriety (social, fun, etc)?” I expect there are residual benefits that I’ll enjoy on the physical and financial health front but I’m fortunate for neither to be a major concern so I view those more as icing than the cake. I’ve struggled with ADHD and mild depression in the past and have been studying happiness best practices over the last few years as well. I’m hopeful this year of sobriety yields results in this arena.
How? I intend to try to live my life as similar as possible to before, just better and more present. I'm keeping my bar stocked, beer fridge full and weed jar green for any visitors. My wife is very moderate drinker (a few drinks a week) and we like to entertain folks who drink. They are adults and I am not looking to influence their habits. My hope is that I continue to be invited to parties, etc. where there will be amble alcohol available. I also do not intend to inform others of my plan outside of this forum, my wife and people I'll be around enough for them to ask questions about my lack of drinking. That is to say, I'm not trying to keep it a secret but I don't want to make it a part of my personality or create a 'holier than thou' vibe either. I expect I'll introduce some NA substitutes to alleviate some of that.
I do intend to ramp up my physical activity - I have ebbed and flowed on running, but may decide to train for a marathon. I also expect to find more time to fill on weekday evenings and will be exploring a few hobbies to do fill that time.
Concerns: I know this won't be all sunshine and roses. I expect the mental withdrawal symptoms (irritability, depressive episodes, etc.) to be difficult but my hope is knowing they are coming will be helpful. As stated before, I'm hopeful that social invites don't drop off, but I know that is a risk and I would not be surprised if some people in my life fall out of it a bit. I'd like to think I can have just as much fun as before but I'm conscious that alcohol and weed helped me to drop my inhibitions and let loose and there will be some activities that just aren't as fun sober. I am in the process of networking for a new job and that has often been a "Let's grab a drink" type activity. I'm hopeful coffees in the morning will be a good substitute but there is a risk I'll miss out on some opportunities.
Thanks to this sub for all the posts that have given me lots to think about in preparation and for being a place for me to post these thoughts. I know this will be a challenge, but I'm confident in my resolve to do it! I'd be happy to post updates along the way in this thread if helpful for others.

Reddit recently announced changes to their API policy that have wide reaching impacts across Reddit. Some mod tools (bots) are impacted that will mean you will see more spam that the bot would have grabbed - please do report these if you see them.
It also means that third party apps such as Apollo, Boost, Reddit is Fun, BaconReader, Narwhal etc will have to pay very high fees to keep their access to Reddit. While most people use the official app, it is not completely accessible (see a post from blind here with details on how you cannot use a screen reader with the iOS app) and there are filtering options in third party tools not available on the official apps that allow users to mute harmful keywords etc.
The sub will be locked from Monday June 12th to Wednesday June 14th (approx 48 hours) as part of a reddit wide blackout with many subs participating.
The episode posts are scheduled and will show up, remember that we have two episodes Monday night. Join us on Wednesday to discuss them!
(this is dependent on the upcoming announcement from Reddit due Friday as admin are reaching out with promises of postponing the API changes and making the app more accessible).

Taking a punk rock approach to all aspects of her alternative folk music -- from genre-bending songwriting and expressive performances to self-reliant distribution -- Ani DiFranco established herself as an inspirational force in independent music after emerging with her self-titled debut in 1990. A resolute follower of the D.I.Y. ethos, DiFranco self-produces and releases her records through her own independent label, Righteous Babe Records, which she established for her debut at the age of 19. Slowly but steadily building a devout grassroots following on the strength of a relentless touring schedule, her songs tackled issues like rape, abortion, and sexism with insight and compassion, the music's empowering attitude and anger tempered by the poignant candor of singesongwriter confessionalism. Along the way, she made fans of artists from Prince, funk saxophonist Maceo Parker, and comedian Margaret Cho, to political folkies like Pete Seeger and Utah Phillips, all of whom have been among her various collaborators over the decades. She made her first of many consecutive appearances on the Billboard 200 with her seventh album, 1996's Dilate. While its arrangements remained relatively spare, it saw her expanding her instrument palette beyond guitar, bass, and drums to include trumpet, Hammond organ, and synthesizer, among other instruments. She reached a career-high number 22 on the U.S. album chart two years later with 1998's Little Plastic Castle. After having been nominated in the folk and rock categories, DiFranco took home a Grammy Award for 2003's Evolve in the packaging category. Featuring lusher arrangements that included a string quartet and brass band, her 16th studio album, Red Letter Year, was a surprise release in 2008, and she reached the Billboard 200 for the 16th time (counting compilations and live albums) with 2017's Binary. DiFranco published the memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream in 2019.
DiFranco was born in Buffalo, New York, on September 23, 1970. She began her career at the age of nine, when her guitar teacher helped her land her first gig -- performing a set of Beatles covers -- at an area coffeehouse. Befriended by the likes of Suzanne Vega and Michelle Shocked, she later gave up music to study ballet, but at the age of 14 returned to the guitar and began composing her first songs. A year later, alienated from her crumbling family structure, she left home, living with friends while making the rounds of the Buffalo folk club circuit.
DiFranco had written over 100 original songs by the age of 19, and after briefly studying art, she relocated to New York City to further her musical aspirations; besieged by requests from fans for tapes of her performances, she recorded a demo and pressed 500 copies of a self-titled cassette to sell at shows. The tape -- a Spartan acoustic folk collection of intensely personal essays on failed relationships and gender inequities -- quickly sold out, and in 1990 DiFranco founded Righteous Babe to better distribute her recordings. In the meantime, they were slowly spreading across the country on the strength of a substantial word-of-mouth following.
In 1991, after issuing the assured Not So Soft, DiFranco hit the road alone, touring the nation in her Volkswagen and playing gigs wherever she could find them. Her cult blossomed, and her distinct image -- shaved head, tattoos, and body piercings -- soon became the de rigueur look for her fans as well. As albums like 1992's Imperfectly and 1993's Puddle Dive expanded her musical ambitions as well as her following, DiFranco became the subject of considerable major-label interest, yet she steadfastly rejected all offers as Righteous Babe grew to become a highly viable business venture.
DiFranco continued playing over 200 dates a year, and soon even the mainstream media took notice of her cottage-industry music. After 1994's masterful Out of Range, she exploded with the following year's Not a Pretty Girl, which garnered notice from outlets ranging from CNN to The New York Times. 1996's Dilate even debuted in the Top 100 of the Billboard album chart, an achievement at the time for an independent release. The live set Living in Clip followed in 1997.
Early in 1998, DiFranco released the studio effort Little Plastic Castle. Her most musically diverse release yet, it was also her highest-charting album to date, and set the stage for the release of Up Up Up Up Up Up the following year. Another full-length, To the Teeth, appeared in 1999 as well, and in mid-2000 the odds-and-ends compilation Swing Set was released. Revelling: Reckoning appeared in 2001, and in 2002, DiFranco issued the double-disc So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter, her first live album since 1997's Living in Clip. The So Much Shouting set captured handpicked favorites by DiFranco and three previously unreleased songs.
The following year's Evolve added funk, jazz, and Latin elements to the mix, while 2004's Educated Guess was performed completely by DiFranco. Knuckle Down, co-produced by Joe Henry, followed in 2005. The eighth disc in her official bootleg series, Carnegie Hall (recorded live on April 2, 2002), was released in April 2006, and then -- shortly after the singer announced she was pregnant -- her studio album Reprieve arrived in August of that year. DiFranco gave birth to her daughter in January 2007 and released another official bootleg, Hamburg, Germany, in 2008. The lushly arranged Red Letter Year came out later in 2008, featuring songs inspired by the impending presidential race, DiFranco's baby daughter, and her partneco-producer, Mike Napolitano.
Arriving in 2012, Which Side Are You On?, the 17th studio album from the alternative folk legend, featured 12 original songs, including the rousing title cut, which was a reworking of a song made popular by Pete Seeger. He lent his distinctive voice and banjo to DiFranco's rendition. In 2014, she returned to her home studio in the New Orleans' Bywater neighborhood to record, produce, and mix sessions for her follow-up, Allergic to Water. Featuring backing from her touring band and guests Jenny Scheinman and Ivan Neville, the set was issued that November. It was followed in 2017 by Binary, which again featured contributions from Scheinman and Neville as well as saxophone legend Maceo Parker and Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. Viking Books published DiFranco's memoir No Walls and the Recurring Dream in May of 2019. The accompanying No Walls Mixtape consisted of newly recorded, stripped-down versions of 16 career-spanning tunes.
DiFranco spent most of the year working the road, writing about what she saw: political dissent and polarization, racial strife exacerbated by police shootings, and protest, some of it volatile. She returned to New Orleans in January, feeling the need to collaborate in order to do her part in getting out the vote. In February, as COVID-19 became known in the U.S. but before the nation quarantined, she traveled to Durham, North Carolina and worked in the studio with produceengineemulti-instrumentalist Brad Cook, and an eclectic group of musicians who included her own band -- bassist Todd Sickafoose and percussionist Terence Higgins -- as well as players from Hiss Golden Messenger, the Mountain Goats, Megafaun, Shouting Matches, Quetico, and Mipso. The recording, reflected its roster, weaving together elements of folk, jazz-pop, and R&B. Titled Revolutionary Love, it was issued in January 2020.

Posting on behalf of my Mom who is getting desperate for answers.
For the last three months, my mom has been fighting a nagging/gnawing right side pain. It comes and goes, but when it's present it's at a 5 on the pain scale and makes normal activities difficult. It hurts to lay on that side as well. She also has had two episodes recently where she spends the day vomiting and in bed due to extreme fatigue. Other symptoms include increased burping and an overall feeling of fullness in her stomach.
Her bloodwork was normal, she tested negative for Celiac and she had an ultrasound on her right abdomen that came back clear. Her doctor has chalked it up to IBS and said to keep a food journal.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Are there additional tests or questions she should be asking? My fear is this could be something more sinister masking as IBS since it came on relatively out of the blue. The only trigger we can think of is she was on two rounds prednisone and some heavy duty anti-inflammatory meds in early Spring to treat a nasty upper respiratory infection.
Any and all recommendations appreciated.

There's been no official announcement regarding Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's streaming release date, though we know it will eventually be released on Netflix, rather than Disney+.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will most certainly come to not only streaming, but quite probably physical media, as well. It’s just a matter of when that’s going to be, and we can make some pretty good guesses on a streaming release window for Across the Spider-Verse. While we currently don’t know the exact online release date for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we do know the movie will be released in cinemas worldwide, including the US and UK, on June 2nd, 2023.
Where will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse stream specifically? Due to an ongoing deal between Netflix and Sony (remember that these movies are not produced by Disney), Across the Spider-Verse will see Netflix as the streaming home for the film when it finishes its theatrical run. It will no doubt make its way to Disney+ eventually, as Disney and Sony do have an agreement for Disney to include Sony’s Spider-Man content in their offerings, but that will at least be some time after Across the Spider-Verse has come out on Netflix.
When Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be on Streaming?
The Spider-Man franchise is in a pretty interesting place regarding streaming. The various films of Sony's franchise have typically been scattered across multiple services. That said, following a historic deal between Sony and Disney, the many stories of Peter Parker and beyond are now available on Disney+. This includes the original Sam Raimi trilogy, the first Amazing Spider-Man film, and, starting mid-May, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Venom. Notably absent from the Disney-streaming platform so far are The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man: Far From Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Morbius, and most significant of all, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Some of the films are not currently available on the service because Sony has pre-existing partnerships with Starz, as that's where most of the absent films are available to stream. That is except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is instead only streaming on Fubo TV and FX Now.
If Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse comes to Disney+ before Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's theatrical run concludes, that would make the House of Mouse's service a likely contender for a streaming release. However, Sony has also historically partnered with Netflix for streaming releases. Up until recently, that's where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was available to stream, and Sony still brings their other big releases to the service, like Bullet Train and The Woman King.
Will Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Be On Netflix?
Yes, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will eventually be on Netflix as a result of a deal inked between the streaming platform and the movie’s distributor, Sony Pictures. The deal gives the streamer U.S. rights to all the company’s theatrical films starting in 2022.
While a streaming release date has not yet been announced, we can make an estimate based on another recent Sony film. The Woman King was released in theaters on Sept. 16, 2022, before it came to Netflix on Feb. 16, 2023 — around five months after it debuted. If Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse follows the same pattern, we could be watching from the comfort of our homes by early November 2023.
However, a digital release date should arrive much sooner. The Storm Reid-led thriller Missing was released in theaters on Jan. 20 before becoming available to purchase or rent on March 7 — about 45 days after its debut. By that logic, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse should come to digital by late mid-July 2023.

For context i have complex trauma disorder (google it if you dont know what it is)
I have been with the love of my life (j) since last October. He is genuinely the light of my life and was the only person i belive i can truly love and trust with my whole heart and soul. Around February this year i met (M) and (L) in the gym and after chatting and exchanging socials became close friends. We ended up becoming a trio for a month or so until (L) got into a relationship and wasn’t hanging out with us frequently. (M) and i decided to continue the friendship without many changes. The only changes we made was we didnt go out for brunch or to meals alone as it wasnt the same without (L) and felt a little to “datey”. One Thursday after (M)’s volleyball practice, which me and some other friends frequently came to watch, we decided to get pizza and chill at his seeing as it was still technically winter and would be too dangerous for me to go home (about a 3 hour trip because of the long walk to the stations and the train changes). As we had been friend for a while and sleepovers werent un common with our friend group (him even staying at my house without other friends before) i saw no issue in this. I got about half way through my pizza while watching some YouTube videos on his tv (which was on his bed) i started feeling panicked, usually i feel this way before i have a panick attack or in worse case a black out. Now is a good time to mention that i havent had a black out episode since starting therapy about a year before this happened, and when i did before it had always either been at home or somewhere like college in a crowded place where there were many people to help me, as when i begin to black out i have no recollection of my surroundings and tend to start to feel numb, like my legs will be walking but i wont know where im going or that im walking at all. I managed to tell (M) that i thought i was going to have a panic attack and apart from him getting out of his chair and coming over to the bed (where i was sitting) and leaning over me, i assumed to check if i was ok, i don’t remember anything that happened. I remember feeling numb and trapped in my own head but not much else. When i came too i felt his hands (although i didnt realise whos they were at the time) on my legs and I remember kicking him off of me and running out of his house. He had ran after me with my phone and bag, although i didnt have a jacket and tried to calm me down. Firstly i called my cousin to come and get me as he usually works nights so i knew he would be awake, but he wasnt working the mainland, so i called (j). Thankfully he was awake because for some reason in all of this i was more worried about waking him up on a work night, he got the adress from max and left straight away, it being a 2 ish hour drive. In the time it took (j) to get to where we were (M) had talked me out of my panicked state. I didnt realise at the time what exactly he had said straight away but it was something along the lines of “its okay none of its your fault, i dont blame you but (j) will.” By that i had figured out what had happened and was angry at him, he told me if i tell (j) he’ll break up with me and it wouldn’t be in my best intrest. I cant prove that i didnt start it even to myself let alone to him so i didnt tell. Looking back i know how stupid that was but I thought it was best for my relationship that i didnt say anything. I remember getting in (j)’s car but nothing else from that night. For a full month afterwards I couldn’t have sex with (j). Even if i wanted to and was in the mood my body wouldn’t let me, we had to take things slow and do things step by step and eventually i was almost back to normal.
A few months had gone by without me being friends with (M) and i had almost gotten the situation out of my head. I had gotten ill and was sick for around two weeks, (M) in that time decided to “come clean” to (j) and call him saying that i had cheated on him. Since i dont actually know if i started it or not i confessed to it and tried to tell him i didnt mean to and i didnt want to. (M) and some close friends of his had gone to (j) and told him that i had manipulated (M) into having sex with me and had done it “so many times he couldn’t count”. Also saying things like i bragged about it and told people i had two boyfriends. I confess and did confirm the first situation as i truly am sorry and feel guilty but i dont understand why all of this extra stuff was brought up. (j) and i have broken up but he has said he will let me earn his trust back slowly as long as i sort myself out.
Even tho (j) and i arent together anymore hes still the love of my life and i will do anything to make things up to him.
I didnt get the chance to tell anyone other than my therapist any actual details about the situation and my therapist belives it is a good idea for me to get it out there in the open so i can move on from it as the past 3 weeks i have been nothing but depressed. Thats why I’ve decided to put it here, your all strangers and I shouldn’t expect any judgement from you. Its also a way of getting it out of my head as i tend to get stuck, its affecting my work and simple things like eating properly and taking care of myself so thank anyone who reads this for being part of helping me get better.
