Not the best letter to get…
Express Scripts has covered MJ, without requiring extra information. I’m pre-diabetic but I believe they will discontinue my coverage. I have managed to accomplish a noteworthy weight loss of 37 pounds. I would like to shed an additional 30 pounds but without this medication I’m not sure that will be possible.
I do not have any other pre-existing medical conditions. If my doctor sends any supporting documentation, do we think that my approval for coverage will continue?

2023.05.29 02:08 PollyTLHist1849 Intermission: "To Arms, Citizens!" A More Perfect Union

Intermission:
In France, the world had begun anew. In the textbook example of absolute monarchy, a revolution had begun. First, the national assembly was established. Then, with the Storming of the Bastille, radical action against the Ancien Régime took place.
The Storming of the Bastille, and the beginning of the French Revolution
However, the revolution didn't stop there. King Louis XVI, the symbol of injustice, was rapidly stripped of his power. As France fell to instability, including royalist uprisings, a coalition of Britain, Austria, and Prussia united to strangle the revolution in the crib.
The French Hang On!
In 1792, the War of the First Coalition began. The Anglo-Austrian-Prussian alliance to crush France crossed into French territory. The Girondists in charge of France, shockingly, repelled them. Shortly after, anti-monarchist sentiments reached a peak. The monarchy was abolished, and Louis XVI, now Citizen Louis Capet, was to be held in the countryside until the end of the war. Famously, in his treason trial, the National Convention narrowly voted to spare Louis' life.
The Cross-Examination of Louis XVI, who would be spared by the NC.
As invasions and rebellions began, the Girondins miraculously fought them off. They began a policy of "Levée en Masse," conscripting an army to defend the fatherland.
In just a year, the war turned around. The rebellions were put down, and France invaded the Austrian Netherlands. Meanwhile, the Convention empowered the navy to better counter the British at the sea. Though not every battle was a success, their navy didn't rot in harbours while the British ruled the waves.
The Republic of Batavia
Following a considerable military victory, France aided the "patriots" of the Dutch Republic in overthrowing the old regime. They established a new republic, styled after the French one, and did away with the aristocracy of old.
The Little Corporal
After putting down a major revolt, a man named Napoleon Bonaparte was put in the spotlight. Besides his silly name, he was also a military genius. Bonaparte proved his worth in 1795, when he helped to single-handedly turn around the so-called "Italian Campaign".
Bonaparte famously crossed the Alps to surprise-attack the Austrians. In a now-legendary feat, he crossed his men through the Alpine region, and into Italy, to defeat the Austrians in the battle of Rovereto.
Bonaparte crosses the Alps, in 1795.
Eventually, after the fall of Italy, a puppet government was set up. France gained land in the Alps, dividing it with its newest sister republic: the Republic of Italy.
The Dust Settles
By 1796, the frontlines were unmoving. The French Republic, under the Girondins, had defeated their enemies and crushed the traitors. They stood strong as a bastion of liberte, egalite, and fraternite. However, what to do with them was an issue in the United States?
The Republicans and Agrarians were firmly in favour of joining France. The Republicans were firmly at the centre of it, while the Agrarian Justice Party was firmly in favour of getting soldiers in Europe to fight alongside France. The Agrarians further believed in levying an army to stand against all invaders, anathema to the Republican opposition to a standing army.
The Federalists, on the other hand, preached neutrality. They were close to Britain, and relied on them for trade. At the same time, the French had become incredibly popular among the people. The Federalists, instead of opposing France, proclaimed that it wasn't their war to fight. Chief Justice-turned-Secretary of State-turned-Chief Justice John Jay spelled out Federalist views with the Jay Treaty.
It is increasingly clear that the 1796 election will be between neutrality and war. While America once squabbled over internal disputes, for the first time, America must deal with something truly frightening: war with alien powers, the masters of Europe.

2023.05.29 01:53 CockatielPony Job offer with no interview

I have a part-time job at Edible Arrangements I'll be starting this Tuesday. I never had an interview for this job, but did talk to the manager for about 5 minutes when picking up an application. Last month I contacted the store manager at the edible Arrangment location Ill be working at wondering if they where hiring. I wanted to switch from working at a retail store and do something more creative. The manager asked for me to come in and pick up a paper application so I did and we talked in the lobby for 5 minutes about the job itself, but it wasn't a professional sit down answer questions while the manager takes notes type of interview. She even mentioned I could start as soon as mother's day which I said I'd like to start later since I had a vacation planned during that time. After I turned in the application, I called a few days later and asked if she read my application. She said there is a position for me, but to call later since I wanted to start late May or early June. I called a few days ago from today and she gave me a start date. Has anyone ever had a job they didn't have to interview for? How did it go? I was just wondering if they where desperately looking for workers, aren't picky, or if I really made that good of a first impression.

2023.05.29 00:26 SunstriderAlar [Event] La nueva generación en el nuevo mundo Across the sea, life goes on

La nueva generación en el nuevo mundo Across the sea, life goes on

XIV FEBRERO MDXVI
Giovanni wept to himself, quietly at first, and then with wrenching, heart-shaking shudders of a man who was barely contained. Pedrarias would have admonished him. His wife, Maria, would have berated him. His brother, William, would have told him that prayers were worth more than tears. And Cesare Borgia would have stabbed him and said, "Now you have something to cry about." His first-born daughter, Maria-Theresa, was stillborn, and his line remained stillborn with her. There would be no Palaiologos to carry on their claim to the Queen of Cities. He wept for himself, he wept for his wife, he wept for his family, and he wept for the New World and the life he thought he was building here. What had survival on Bermuda been for if not to bring new life into this world?
The year of 1516 had been set for the most brilliant and jubilant arrival of new life and peace for the city of Panama. Instead, the death of Maria de Paleólogo y Téllez-Girón had brought only sadness. The indigenous people listened to Giovanni's story and understood his belief that his family was cursed. They understood where his self-belief came from and the role his family played across the waves of the Atlantic. They called him 'El emperador perdido' or 'el hombre sin familia,' and they knew why he worked as hard as he did. He tried his best to treat them well, but 1516 was a cursed year, and even the estate of Elysia was renowned for being a bleak place. There was little to inspire joy or happiness that year.
By the turn of the year, Maria was herself again, a woman of fierce temperament and fiercer demands. She was driving her land hard, and Giovanni harder. There was little that stood between the young woman and her future. She was determined to see her estate rival any on Cuba and aspire to match the great landowners of Spain proper. Her bargain was known to all; working for the Lady of Elysia, the so-called 'Persephone,' was a fast route to favours and wealth beyond imagination. Spanish and indigenous alike knew of her reputation and her favour.
Ninguané spent the year planning the grandest expedition that Pedrarias would ever undertake. It would not be this year, nor 1517, or even 1518, it was to take place in 1520. A full four years of planning time in preparation. Pedrarias himself would lead it, Juan to be his second, and Ninguané their chief guide. They were going to utilise a ludicrous amount of men and arms, and provisions sufficient to establish two colonies in their own right. Any native tribe who stood against the Old Man would find itself crushed. To aid him, Ninguané used the maps and information provided by the foreign traders. He also used lessons learned from fighting the Cuevá to have Juan write some simple guides for the condottiero who would come with them. This was all just the first step though, and as planning commenced Juan got to work on ensuring Panamá was the ideal place to launch this expedition from.
----
XXII JULIO MDXVII
1517 was destined to be one of the greatest years in the entire lifetime of the House of Paleólogo, who now officially adopted the Spanish translation of their name. On a warm day, near midday, Lady Maria Luisa Enríquez y Téllez-Girón, after carrying a heavy belly for nine months, finally gave birth. On that sweltering summer day, baby Guillermo de Paleólogo y Téllez-Girón was born healthy and crying. He already had a thick head of hair, and his lungs heralded the arrival of a new generation of Paleólogo, who would carry the family name and the title of Imperator Constantinopolitanus. Word had finally reached them from across the sea that Guglielmo, in his solitude, was unlikely to provide an heir to the family.
Juan, known as Giovanni in his Italian name and Ioannes in Latin, was rightfully his brother's heir, and the baby boy Guillermo was his own heir. As his wife's laboured breathing turned to laughter and joy after hours of agonising screams, Juan's love for her overflowed. In four different languages, he praised her. First in Italian, then in Latin, then Greek, and finally Spanish. He spoke of love and vitality, of eternal marriage. He whispered sweet nothings that made the midwives blush and turn away in embarrassment. Together, Juan and Maria held their new son and thanked the Lord Almighty for their happiness. On that July day, nothing could have shattered their joy, not even the fall of Rome itself, for their whole world was cradled in their arms.
The year went by, and Guillermo proved to be strong-willed for a baby, expressing himself in every possible way. Part of Maria knew that her husband would desire another son sooner rather than later. Juan, having tasted fatherhood, yearned for more. He told them that family, like faith, was strongest when held with love in their hearts. Together, they prayed for another child, and their zealousness was soon rewarded.
Meanwhile, Ninguané took charge of managing affairs between Elysia, Panamá, and the Coclé tribe. Being fluent in Spanish, his native language, and Latin, thanks to the church, made him indispensable to the Spanish around him, especially Pedrarias and Juan. Part of him regretted not being able to be there for his family more, and he knew that sooner or later, he would need to take a wife of his own. Yet, a small part of him harboured a fascination with the women who came from across the sea and wanted Pedrarias and Juan to arrange a Spanish wife for him. He wasn't entirely sure why, but there was an intrigue surrounding these women. He also knew that his family expected him to marry someone from his tribe since he was the chieftain's son. While Elysia had expanded Panamá to the size of Medina del Oro and Nombre de Dios combined, Juan and Ninguané aimed even higher. Together, they began constructing a fortress in Panamá.
It wouldn't be a grand castle, but it would be sufficient to hold the region of Castilla del Oro against aggression and exert influence over the surrounding areas. It was also intended to serve as a residence for the future Duc. With this in mind, Ninguané sought his father's input, and Juan commissioned Spanish engineers. The Fuerte de San Constantino would serve as the base of Spanish power in the Atlantic, initially for Pedrarias and later for the planned grand expedition to the north. From this stronghold of Spanish might, the region would be secured eternally for the Spanish Monarchs. However, something about this plan unsettled Ninguané, yet the undeniable prosperity of his tribe kept those concerns at bay most of the time.
----
VII AGOSTO MDXVIII
Pedrarias surveyed the room and expressed his gratitude to God, the Queen, and the Kingdom. Juan cradled the boys in his arms, his wife gazing at him with love while the proud midwives beamed at the woman who had just given birth. The priest blessed the family in Latin. They named the twin boys Bonifacio de Paleólogo y Téllez-Girón and Constantino de Paleólogo y Téllez-Girón. It was a double blessing from God that even Pedrarias had made the journey from Nombre de Dios to witness. They called him the Old Man, and though he was indeed old, he was not too old to visit one of his key administrators on such a significant day. His own children were now grown, with wives and soon-to-be children. Pedro and Francisco, his sons, were grown men, while Arias, 18 years old, had thoughts of sending him to court. His daughters included María de Peñalosa, who would turn 16 this year and soon be married, Isabela de Bobadilla, 13 years old, and Elvira, his youngest at just 9. Pedrarias knew the joys of having children and understood the significance of this moment for Juan.
However, the joy and celebrations of the 'double-headed eagle' in Elysia were short-lived. Constantino caught a cradle cough and passed away barely two months after his birth. Juan and María were devastated once again, especially Juan. Ninguané, who had witnessed life come to Panamá, now watched it fade from his friend's face once more. While the previous year had been filled with good news and abundant energy, the administrator retreated into himself. Missives and directions came through assistants and helpers, and Pedrarias rarely called upon his senior advisor, knowing that the man was barely eating, let alone fit for conversation. Fortunately, preparations for the grand expedition and the construction of the Fuerte de San Constantino continued, with Ninguané and Pedrarias taking charge while Juan managed the finances and other foremen oversaw the actual construction.
Towards the end of the year, Ninguané and Pedrarias grew particularly close in the absence of Juan managing their affairs. The native prince of Panama, now 22 years old, had matured since joining the colony at the age of 18. Pedrarias saw before him a handsome man, dark-skinned but lacking the refinement of civilization, yet intelligent, creative, and cunning—traits that Pedrarias appreciated. What became apparent to him, beyond his own admiration and dependence, was the affection that Maria held for Ninguané as well. The young girl became a frequent "guest" whenever Ninguané stayed late at Pedrarias' residence. She would bombard him with questions about his family and his thoughts on the Spanish. She would quiz him on the various Kings and Queens of Spain. Before the year ended, Maria started asking her father about whom he thought Ninguané would marry and the laws regarding such matters.
Juan Paleólogo and his wife, along with the rest of Elysia, returned to active service for the colony in the final quarter of the year. With renewed vigour, which he found by turning to his two living sons, Juan fully immersed himself in his duties. This involved weekly trips from his estate to Panamá proper or Nombre de Dios to visit the governor. He resumed the process of formalising the plans for what was now referred to as 'La gran expedición' and personally wrote letters to investors, the Casa, and Corte Real de Madrid. His mastery with the quill was unrivalled, having spent time in Rome, and Pedrarias was immensely grateful to have him back. The loss of Bobadilla some years ago had hindered progress in Medina, but with his competent Greek administrator, the colony rediscovered its purpose and attracted new investments.
Together, the three men rallied once again and devoted themselves to ensuring that Castilla del Oro became the crown jewel of the New World. They formed perhaps the finest trio of officials on this side of the Atlantic.
----
Summary
Juan de Paleólogo and his wife have had a number of children over the years. He has been up and down emotionally but on the whole Panamá has now become as large as Medina del Oro and Nombre de Dios combined.
Ninguané has grown much closer to Pedrarias with Juan focussed on family following the death of his son. Ninguane and Maria, the eldest daughter of Pedrarias, are growing closer.
Pedrarias has begun preparations for probably his final expedition; it is to be particularly large.
A new fort is being built in Panama for ƒ100,000 (mil), costs split ƒ75k (Casa) and 25k (del Oro).

2023.05.29 00:02 stlatos PIE *nighro-, *wegWh-; Skt. *ghl

Part of the reason Dardic (and Nuristani and Gypsy, if sub-groups or close relatives) can not descend from Skt. is the different treatment of C-clusters https://www.reddit.com/language/comments/12uhi52/peter_zoller_and_the_oriental_origin/ . Another difference seems to be g- vs. g(h)R- in:
Skt. gaccha- ‘tree’, Kh. gḷòts ‘crotch of tree’, *gṛatshi > Sh. gaṭṣhí ‘branch’ >> Bu. gaṭṣ(h)é ‘branch’
A. ghrútsa ‘wild strawberries’, Kh. grùts ‘bunch of grapes’, Skt. gutsá- / guccha- ‘bundle / bunch of flowers / tussock / etc.’
*gṛutsa- > *ṛutsa- > *uṛutsa- > Kt. vřóts, Kv. řóts ‘raceme / bunch of grapes (measure)’, Sa. vâṣ

These certainly seem to be related words, and others like Skt. grapsa-s \ glapsa-s ‘bundle/tussock/tuft/bunch?’, grathna-s ‘tuft/bunch’, grantha-s ‘knot’ are closer than chance should allow. Even Sh. gaṭṣhí ‘branch’, A. gutshíi ‘morel’, Kv. gřântsók ‘edible mushroom’ show shifts like u \ a, g \ gR. A retroflex ḷ might indicate an origin from r (if it was retro. in Proto-Indo-Iranian, as indicated by it causing s > ṣ). It’s also possible that these words are related: Kh. grùts ‘bunch of grapes’, Yi. γôro ‘bunch of grapes’, D. γooráa ‘grape’, Kho. gūr, Ps. kwar ‘wild grape’. Part of the reason is that r disappears in derivatives of this group, too: *gūriṇa- > Kho. gūräṇa- ‘of grapes’ >> *guRni-meDu ‘grape alcohol’ > TB kuñi-mot ‘wine’.

Since A. ghrútsa starts with ghr-, r \ l \ etc. are seen in cognates, Skt. changed Ch-Ch > C-Ch and Chs > Cs, older *ghlaths- in some might fit. With no other examples of old *ghl-, saying that l > r was optional, then ghl- > gh- was regular in Skt. seems to account for some alternation. The only way to achieve even a semblance of regularity is to assume *ghlathušna- with optional metathesis, shortening, etc. (with an ending also seen in Skt. deṣṇá- ‘gift’, Bac. lašno ‘gift’ ( > Pkt. laśni- ); maybe *zgWhr(t)šna- ‘round’).

That ghr and ghl might have changed in different ways after r & l began merging allows an explanation for some words of unclear ety. If Vghl > V:l can explain:
Skt. vyāghrá- ‘tiger’, *vyāghlá- > vyāla- ‘vicious (elephant) / beast of prey / lion / tiger / hunting leopard / snake’
*nighro- > L. niger ‘black/dark’, *nighla- > Skt. nī́la- ‘dark blue’
then the similar Vgl > V:l might explain:
*(s)neigW- ‘water / snow’ > OIr snigid ‘rains’, *nigla- > Skt. nīrá- ‘water’, Kv. nilá, Sa. nī́l ‘lake formed from a river’
in which *gl might be the oldest in IIr., but since r \ l was a lasting pattern, knowing more than this would be difficult.

Details: Skt. nī́la- from *nei- ‘shine’ alone does not work (not *neih- due to L. nitor ‘radiance’, Skt. netra- ‘eye’, etc.). Since *ghr- > gr- \ *hr- > r- in L., a similar alternation within words might exist (or all derivatives might be analogy from *nigro- later).

Skt. vyāghrá- ‘tiger’ could easily be a loan from some unknown Iranian language with *vivaghra- ‘bragging, boasting, roaring’ > vyāghrá- by the sound changes in *wi-wak- ‘brag, boast, be boastful/loud/boisterous’ >> Sanskrit vivakvánt- ‘eloquent’, vívāk- ‘verbal contest’, Avestan viiāxna- ‘eloquent, bragging’ (see https://www.reddit.com/etymology/comments/zsduz3/etymology_of_viagra/ for more). The other meanings ‘mischievous / wicked / vicious / prodigal / extravagant / prince/king’ might also indicate an origin from a word for ‘speak’ > ‘fib / boast’, etc. That *wekW- and *wegWh- are related by optional changes in IE should be considered.

That Skt. vyāghrá- ‘tiger’, vyāla- ‘lion / tiger / hunting leopard’, etc., are related is clear from similar semantics in other words https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/13u98ch/ie_words_with_shifts_leopard_snake_or_more/ . A retroflex ḷ ( > ḍ ) might indicate an origin from r in vyāla- : vyāḍa-. Later cognates show similar shifts:
Skt. vyāghrá- ‘tiger’, vyāla- ‘mischievous / wicked / vicious (elephant) / beast of prey / lion / tiger / hunting leopard / snake / prince/king’, vyāḍa- ‘rogue/jackal’ (among most of the meanings of vyāla-), Pali vāḷa- \ bāḷa- ‘savage / beast of prey / snake’, Sinh. vaḷa ‘tiger’, viyala ‘tiger / panther / snake’.

The Iranian origin of Skt. vyāghrá- might be shown if vy- > mz- in Ps. was true (see https://www.reddit.com/Pashtun/comments/128a24x/pashto_m_entries_by_georg_morgenstierne/ ):
Skt. vyāghrá- ‘tiger’, Ps. *vyārágh- > *vzārágh- > *mzāráγ > mzarai
L. viēre ‘bend/plait/weave’, Skt. vyayati, OCS viti ‘wind/twist’, Ps. *vyay- > mazai ‘twist/thread’, Waz. mǝzzai ‘thread/cord / twisted/turned’

This ety. might also show a relation with Dravidian, though not a loan from Drav. > Skt. as some might say. If *nighla- > Skt. nī́la- ‘dark blue’ *nahl-? > Tamil nallam ‘charcoal/blackness/darkness’, Telugu nallani ‘black’ shows an older meaning, it could help in establishing various relations and sound changes. A shift of i-a > a-a might also exist in Skt. kṣīrá-m ‘milk’, A. ṭṣhiír, Ks. ṭṣhir, Ti. ṭṣi, >> Bu. ṭṣháo ‘to milk’ (see more in https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/13g1l2g/burushaski_and_indoeuropean_dardic_loans/ https://www.reddit.com/IndoEuropean/comments/13kgads/burushaski_indoeuropean_2/ ).

Job advice
A few months ago, I posted my resume on here, asking for advice. I've taken a lot of it into consideration, and I feel like my resume is much better now. But I've been looking and applying to jobs for almost 3 months and still can't find a thing. I just graduated college, so now I have a degree and almost 3 years of experience to work with, but I can't even get to the interview stage. I haven't had a single interview yet (except two scams). So I'm back on here again, looking for some more advice on how to get a job in America. I'm not looking for anything life changing, I just want something to help me get my foot in the door so I can start finally start my real career. I'm just looking for an entry level clerical (office/assistant) job.
This is my "resume dump" that I use for clerical jobs. I edit it for every position I apply for, so its never longer than a page. I always include a cover letter if they request one. What more can I do?

2023.05.28 20:08 DerpyWriting68 Prison world: The demands 2/2

Authors note:
This one is probably a little less polished, but I think it properly ends this section of earth story from the perspective of both sides leaders.
Previous Chapter
The Grand Commander of Earth’s Forces, Joshua Henrik, was sat at the table. He was between the head researcher Emma Jackso. Finally, was the President of Earth’s combined nations, Jennifer Conroy. They sat on one side of a bare steel table, three human body guards, behind them, unarmed and unarmored.
Before him sat an avian being, a sight that still unnerved him despite the past 20 years of war. This one was unique, pure white wings, in what he presumed was their kinds suit. The wings wrapped up over his shoulders. It was as though he was protecting his chest; it obfuscated most of his attire though. He, too, had guards. Five unarmed and unarmored soldiers stared at their group defiantly.
Henrik, out of habit, raised a hand over the table. “It’s our first-time meeting, correct? You are?” Doing his best to retain the discipline that he had left.
“I am Prince Artak of the Allitra. I am your new leader. You dare to look at me as an equal.” He said, glaring, not reacting to the raised hand.
Jennifer laughed. “You think you’re our new king? Not even close. If you truly thought that, you wouldn’t be here to negotiate. Now tell me, bird, why did you bring us here? I think I speak for us all when I say we would all like this to be over as soon as possible. Not only do you request an audience with us all, in neutral ground, but you then insult my army’s commander by refusing his greeting... How about we just call it refusal and leave now?” meeting my eyes for the last few words.
“Now now Jen... President, there is no need to go so far. You will apologise for the disrespect you showed me, won’t you, Artak.” Henrik began, pointedly tapping the table for the final few words.
“Apologise me? I won’t” He glared, yellow eyes narrowing on him, slits narrowing too.
“Then I hereby request a formal audience with your king. I do believe you have one, don’t you?” Jennifer, having had a few deep breaths, had collected herself.
“You have no right...” Artek began
“Either we are your subjects. In which case, per our prisoners, who, as far as I know, have no reason to lie. We have the right to petition your father due to unjust treatment and torture. Alternatively, we are still at war, which as much as you have declared victory, battles rage on, and we are still fighting you, so its what we consider ourselves, then we have the right to speak to your leader, not an upst... Not just a prince. To negotiate.” Emma recited, without looking away from her notes. “Finally, this is informal, in which case, you will treat us as equals. If that’s the case, stop. Looking. Down. On. Us.”
“I... It’s informal. Let’s not involve my father.” Artek began, beak going golden with blood. “I came to ask for your help. I suspect there is a lot you don’t know, so... let me start at the beginning. You are right; however, I might not like it but I am here to ask for your help. I should stop looking down on you.” He unfurled his wings and put them behind his back. Imitating the grand commander’s prior action, he raised a hand toward him. The commander returned the gesture, gripping his wrist, not hand. The avian did the same to him.
The commander locked eyes with the avian, “for today and today alone, I will not murder you. Tomorrow onward depends on what we learn today. If it is not good, lord help you. I will personally murder your billion or so soldiers if I have to, to kill you.”
“It won’t be good, but I am hoping to settle our differences, at least for now. You might not realise, but there is more at risk than your world. I was unaware when I attacked. Let me begin with what has happened until now,” Artek began calmly. “Your world is a prison world. Well before my great grandfather, it was just a quarantined world. How much about your folklore do you think is real? Vampire, werewolves, so on?”
Emma looked up pointedly at this. “They don’t... never existed. Why?”
“Oh, they existed, they exist. See, about a fifty thousand standards ago, my family accidentally infected your world. It was a spore. That spore turns living beings insane, feasting on their sanity. Honestly, we don’t know how it works. What we do know is that you are immune. Pardon my apologies, but the theory is that you began crazy, so can’t go crazy, so they have nothing to feast on. Regardless, you also seem to weaken them. Your world has lasted the 50 thousand standards since...” He continued until Emma interrupted.
“Wait, you mean to say that there is extra-terrestrial life in this world and it turns things evil... wait no, first what’s a standard?”
“A standard is the galactic standard for a year. It’s the average time it takes for the council’s station in its core system to round its sun. About 2.031 earth years. Yes, there is extra-terrestrial life here...” Artek answered “Anyway, where was I? Right, your world has survived. This is because you humans seem to weaken the spawn and its effects, especially when you are in groups. Those stories of vampires, werewolves and the like, happened. As your population grew, so too did tthe strength of the suppressing ability. Hence the lack of sightings these days. Now heres the part why you should help me fend this thing off... If it continues infecting animals, plants... My soldiers even. When enough become infected, it will infect your world. It will use the mantle and core to feast and gorge. It fills the earths mantle with gasses, until your world will shatter due to pressure. It will then drift into neighbouring worlds. Systems and onto any nearby ship. These will go to populated worlds, infecting them in a matter of years, not millennia it has for you. Trillions will die.”
“And?” the grand commander stated flatly. “With respect, if we ask our people if they would rather die and take trillions of you with them... I think they are going to say yes over survival on a world that is as damaged as this one is now.”
“Commander” Artek began…
“It’s Grand commander of Earth’s Forces to you,” Henrik spat back.
“Grand Commander of Earth’s Forces, let’s not be rash. I came to ask for help, but not empty-handed. What do you want, in exchange for your assisting us?” Artek asked plainly, tired of the arguing.
The three of them looked at each other, knowing this was coming. “First, you will answer our questions” Jennifer leaned forward, looking in his eyes. “Prison world? Why the change in designation?..”
“After we infected your world, it was quarantined. Only one way vehicles were allowed. You came here, you stayed here. It just made sense to drop our biggest toughest criminals here, they had no way out and we assumed infected beasts might kill them occasionally... speaking of which, I was meaning to ask you about this... Where’s the giant three headed fire breathing beast we left here?”
“What three headed... You mean Cerberus, the guardian of the underworld?” Emma spluttered. “If you really dropped that here as well, it’s not been seen in like thousands of years. Presumably we killed it.”
“You killed that thing with these guns... laughable,” Artek stated
“No, not guns, spears, swords, the like. We have had guns for about 400 years.”
The grand commander couldn’t take it anymore. “You dropped fucking monsters on our world. Criminals as well presumably, what in the ever-lasting fuck did we do to you to deserve this? Were we just a convenient place to drop your scum?” feeling the prince’s feathered neck between his fingers. The prince let his wings flap for a second.
“G.. Grand commander of earth’s forces, p.. please, I was not alive the last time something or someone was dumped here...” Jennifer gently placed her hand onto her commander’s outstretched arm.
“Please Joshua, you know more than anyone knows that our people are tired. If we kill him, this war will never end.” Henrik released his grip, retaining his glare.
“Okay, you want to know what I want to help you? After we solve this crisis, after we cure this spore, after your people leave our world. I want the following: You in chains, in our prison. I want your weapons, armor and ship designs, including how you navigate the universe. I want to keep a few spores... I intend to make a weapon that will stop you ever thinking of us attacking us again.”
Artek thought this was surprisingly reasonable, except that weapon... When the commander continued. “Oh and I before we help, I want each and every soldier in these photos, bound and dragged to a prison of our choosing. There they will await trial. I am aware we are too personally involved in this for a jury to make a fair decision, so we will use 11 fresh AI for each case. If they are guilty, then closest remaining family member of the victim will decide their fate. They will decide if the punishment is death, life in prison or a lesser sentence of their choice. Each one either tortured someone or used a chemical weapon on them. Those are war crimes. We will not work with you until we redress this. One stabbed a 5-year-old girl in a nerve cluster, twisting the knife for minutes before killing her. Her cries are blood curdling. Want to hear?”
“N.. No. Torture's forbidden among our troops. I’m sure it didn’t happ” when Artek watched a video appear in front of him as the soldier took joy in the child’s suffering.
“Didn’t happen? Fuck off. Give us the soldiers and get our help, or don’t and you get nothing. That said, we don’t torture our prisoners. Their imprisonment and deaths will be merciful. More than you can say about your prisoners.”
Then Emma chipped in. “Oh, and I want complete research documents on what makes your weapons, armors and ship’s work. If we are missing science to understand it, you will provide the missing research. Plus scientists to teach us. Can’t get rid of the spore if that leaves us wildly undefended, so the bomb short term... a fleet the long term”
Then Jennifer grinned. “I want a few things. I want the materials, tools, resources and facilities to rebuild. Rebuild our world, our populations and to build a fleet. Free. I want the technology to rebuild our world as fast as possible. The best you have. I want doctors, medicine.. I want whatever the intergalactic currency is, a fifth of whatever your people have. If you don’t meet any of our demands, then we would rather watch our world destroyed. Oh and for reference, this doesn’t resolve the matter of dropping your criminals and monsters here... We will return to that after we resolve this crisis. Now begone. Consult your king on our terms, as I am sure this is not something you alone can agree to. Oh, and add on a defensive treaty. You fleet will defend us if we are attacked by anyone else for 1000 standards.”
At that, the human leaders got up and left. Leaving Artek sat there, stunned. These people were not the broken people, he thought, they were expecting this. Did they know? By the gods 4 sacks, how would he explain the terms to his father... They couldn’t refuse but they would be arming a future adversary... They had done so much with primitive equipment as well... gods damnit. He disabled the translator and looked at one of the soldiers. “Adviser, arrange a meeting with my father. He isn’t going to like this.” One of his guards slipped out.
It had taken about 2 standards, but humans had moved groups of people over the planet. Artek provided the defenses, and slowly they burned the abominations into nothingness again. The humans had already started researching it in secret and they thought they had a way to kill it. Unwilling to share, however, we had to trust them. It was nothing definite, of course.
Another 10 standards passed. They finally demonstrated a way to kill the queen spores, a feat we had yet to achieve. They had mutated an earth fungal spore. It basically bred with it, rendering it infertile. By this point, however, they had created their bomb... It moved matter at 95% the speed of light, including the spores. It was sat in space in case someone attacked. If it went off, a kit if worlds would get spores... After the spores on earth were cleansed, my brethren left, leaving in other fleets. The prior terms are clear. You leave your weapons, armor and fleet of ships behind.
The humans had demanded the technology first. The scientists were permitted to work remotely to protect them. As I was cuffed and lead to a prison, I looked at Jennifer and the Grand Commanders’ faces; I saw the eyes of a predator who just found a new field to hunt in... It might have been better to let the spores loose.

2023.05.28 17:30 DocMcStabby Guys! I did it!!

Guys! I did it!!
The crappy looking loaf was my first attempt at sourdough. I used a King Arthur rustic sourdough recipe with added yeast to my starter. It was edible but not good. Only took a few hours.
The good looking one I did right. Fed my starter every 12 hours, made my dough last night, proofed on the counter overnight, and baked it this morning.
However, it is a bit gummy in the middle. Did I cut it too early? Take it out of the oven too soon? Very excited to start getting better at this.

Queen's Pawn: Modern
1...g6
As with many of Black's off-beat 1st move alternatives, this move does not hold independent status as it usually transposes into other mainstream openings. It's quite a good move but usually the mainline is part of another opening. White may transpose into the Pirc or Modern defence by playing 2. e4, so black must enjoy playing these defences or should shy from this move.
White's options are many. Here are the 2 most popular:
Most popular responses
  • 2. c4 (Queen's Pawn: Modern) Playing the standard Queen's pawn formation controlling the center. Black's options are still many, but likely to be a King's Indian or Grunfeld Defence, but possible is a transposition into the Dutch Defense. (Lichess analysis) (Wikibooks) (20131619 games)

2023.05.28 10:39 Proletlariet King Arthur

Respect King Arthur Pendragon!

Everyone knows the story of King Arthur - guy pulls a sword from a stone, becomes king of England, makes a table shaped like a circle, all that stuff. But what if that story was 10 times more action packed and 100 times more incomprehensible?
In this version directed by "acclaimed" "filmmaker" Guy Ritchie, Arthur Pendragon is an orphan who winds up in the care of some prostitutes. He grows up in their brothel and as a man becomes like, a sarcastic crime guy or something with a lot of money. After unknowingly harboring noted rebel Goosefat Bill, Arthur's rounded up and sent off to this place where there's a sword in a stone that he has to pull out (spoiler alert: the stone's his dad).
After pulling the sword, Arthur is revealed as the true and rightful heir to the throne. His evil uncle Vortigern (who usurped the throne to begin with and is currently building a tower that will give him incredible magic power) arranges his execution, but a gang of rebels stops it and brings Arthur to their base. From there, Arthur has to accept his responsibility, defeat Vortigern and his army, and take his place as the once and future king.
Vortigern RT for scaling.

Physicals

Feats in italics are from when he's not using Excalibur, as the sword seems to amp his physicals.
Strength
Durability
Speed/Agility

Excalibur

The sword of legend itself, originally given to Arthur's father Uther by the mage Merlin. Cutting feats are above.

(1) This Act extends to the whole of the United Kingdom and to Gibraltar. (2) This Act comes into force on the day on which this Act is passed (3) This Act may be cited as the European Economic Area Referendum Act 2023.
This bill was originally model-mili and Frost_Walker2017 and was inspired by the real life European Union Referendum Act 2015 and the Wales Justice and Policing Referendum Act 2020, with thanks to Miraiwae for the Welsh translations.
This bill was submitted and dates slightly altered by u/thechattyshow, and is submitted as a Private Members Bill.
Opening Speech: thechattyshow
Speaker,
I reached out to u/model-mili, and permission was granted to resubmit this for the term.
Let me quote the now Prime Minister:
I rise in support of this bill. It was a key promise in the Labour manifesto, and I’m excited to see it through.I think all the members here can agree that we are in a cost of living crisis, Deputy Speaker, and measures to address this are ongoing. Yet, in most of the discussions members have missed that there is a large trading bloc on our doorstep that we were members of until quite recently, which was a net positive to our economy and to living standards in the UK.This bill is not an endorsement of the EEA, nor is it attempting to argue that we should join EEA - rather, it is about giving a choice to the British people. With the rise of the Social Liberal Party - an unashamedly pro-EU party - it is clear there is appetite for a closer relationship, and Labour’s second place with our promise to hold a referendum shows that this is the next step that the people of the UK would like to consider.
Pretty convincing words, hey?
The reality is that the European Economic Area for many, such as myself, is an organisation that I am very keen to join. The EEA offers us a great deal of growth, and is a clear indication of a Britain that wishes to stand alongside it's EU colleagues, together for prosperity.
We have seen the rise of pro-eu parties. Last Labour manifesto, stated:
Since our departure from the European Union, more barriers to tradehave unnecessarily been put into place with our closest neighboursand friends. Labour will, as we did last term, push for a referendum onEEA Membership to re-enter the single market. Given people nowknow the effects of Brexit, it is important that they are given thechance to re-evaluate and reconsider, and if they choose to remainoutside the EEA the matter can be considered settled.
Now it would be a great shame if Labour broke a manifesto promise like this - so I am happy that this will get their support. It is important that manifesto policies are delivered, and so I offer this as an olive branch to the Labour Party, as a token of goodwill, for them to help achieve one of their promises.
This division will end at 10pm on the 31st May.

2023.05.28 06:24 ImAmInsane A schizophrenic attorney submitted this to the court in the carroll v trump case

https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.543790/gov.uscourts.nysd.543790.151.0.pdf
The attorney does not represent either side nor does she have any relation to any party as she claims. Its over 50 pages but here's some fun quips from it.

“First, defendant is my half-brother. He suffers from bipolar disorder, as do I, as this mental illness runs in the family, which we have traced back to John & Edward Rutledge, signers of the US Constitution & Declaration of Independence. No one, judge, no court, no legislator, and no President has ever figured, discerned, or agreed on what those documents mean or intended, a reflection of their authors…”
“… the documents weren’t written (or signed) by highly trained, educated lawyers should at Cambridge and Oxford ,such as John & Edward Rutledge, but rather by their servants, their love slaves… For example, have you ever met a 3/5 person? I haven’t either, but there “it” is, a 3/5 person, still in the main text of the US Constitutions.”
“… the cases should be dismissed due to his bipolar illness and temporary insanity…”
“Partying, drinking, drugs, dancing, mental illness were all problems of the Founding fathers & mothers, who were busy binging and having sex orgies & sex with their African and Caribbean servants…”
“This court must decide its pending case of Carroll v Trump pursuant to British substantive and procedural law.”
“Benito Mussolini, Italian Fascist dictator, had similar delusions of grander as Hitler, but not as competent and skilled as Hitler.”
“As President Biden has, by Juneteenth Order Amendment, declared that Judaism is the official, national religion of the US and all states.”
“The government of Iran will become secular- they picked the wrong religion.”
“Now, there’s more to mention about Chester, PA, including the new Kobe & Gianna Bryant Olympic Stadium.”
(She spends 6 pages naming random musical artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Adele, followed by 2-3 pages naming random military ship names.)
“The tenth reason to dismiss is this case can easily be settled…: Plaintiff, Trump, Chester City PA, Brooklyn NY, Dr Martin Luther King, Marcus Garvey, and the NYC Board of Rabbis each get 16%. The Temple of Emanuel gets 4%.
“As a result, the case pending before your honor, must be dismissed, with prejudice.”

2023.05.28 04:51 Junior_Button5882 11 Terrifying-But-True Horror Stories Reported in the News - From fatal exorcisms to unexplained deaths and devil worship—these are some real-life nightmares.

A terrifying movie or book or show gets your blood pumping in the moment of consumption, sure—we covered our eyes in Squid Game with the rest of the world. But for the most part, you rest easy afterward knowing that what you've witnessed is fiction, deliberately spun up to creep you out. When the real world gets eerier than anything Stephen King could dream up, that's when you have every right to get a little scared of the dark.
Once in a while, a story of a dreadful disappearance, demonic possession, or devil worship will land in the local paper instead of a pulpy old paperback. We've rounded up the most unnerving real-life tales below. In honor of spooky season, here are eleven we can't stop thinking about.

The Axe Murder House

The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa is a well-known tourist attraction for ghost hunters and horror lovers alike. The site of a gruesome unsolved 1912 murder, in which six children and two adults had their skulls completely crushed by the axe of an unknown perpetrator, was purchased in 1994, restored to its 1912 condition, and converted into a tourist destination. It costs $428 a night to stay at the old haunted home, where visitors always report strange paranormal experiences, such as visions of a man with an axe roaming the halls or the faint screams of children.
But in November of 2014, the haunting took a darker turn. Robert Steven Laursen Jr., 37, of Rhinelander, Wisconsin was on a regular recreational paranormal visit with friends when true horror struck. Per VICE:
His companions found him stabbed in the chest—an apparently self-inflicted wound—called 9-1-1, and Laursen was brought to a nearby hospital before being helicoptered to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Laursen suffered the self-inflicted injury at about 12:45 a.m., which is around the same time the 1912 axe murders in the house began.
Laursen recovered from his injuries, but has never spoken publicly about what occurred that day. For Martha Linn, the owner of the home, the incident was very upsetting. "It's publicity, but it's not exactly the kind of publicity you desire to have. I don't want people thinking that when they come to the Villisca Axe Murder House something's going to happen that's going to make them do something like that.” The house remains open for tourist visits and overnight stays today.

The Haunted Doll

When you think of haunted dolls, it’s likely the creepy old Victorian-looking porcelain kind that springs to mind. None of which you probably have laying around. Still, don’t get too comfortable around any kids toys too soon, though: a Disney’s Frozen Elsa doll that was gifted for Christmas 2013 in the Houston area made headlines earlier this year when it seemingly became haunted.
Per KPRC2 Houston News:
The doll recited phrases from the movie Frozen and sang “Let It Go” when a button on its necklace was pressed.
“For two years it did that in English,” mother Emily Madonia said. “In 2015, it started doing it alternating between Spanish and English. There wasn’t a button that changed these, it was just random."
The family has owned the doll for more than six years and never changed its batteries. The mother says the doll would randomly begin to speak and sing even with its switch turned off.
The family decided to throw the creepy doll out in December of 2019. Weeks later, they found it inside a bench in their living room. “The kids insisted they didn’t put it there, and I believed them because they wouldn’t have dug through the garbage outside,” Madonia told KPRC2 Houston News.

At that point, Elsa ceased to sing the English rendition of “Let It Go” altogether, speaking only Spanish when pressed. The family then double-bagged the bizarre doll and placed it at the bottom of their garbage which was taken out on garbage day. They went on a trip shortly after, but when they returned, Elsa too had come back, and was waiting in the backyard of their home.
This time, the family mailed Elsa to a family friend in Minnesota, who taped the haunted doll to the front bumper of his truck. It doesn’t seem to have made its way back to Houston yet, as per Madonia’s latest February Facebook update on the creepy doll.

A Deadly Exorcism

In August 2016 in North London, 26-year-old Kennedy Ife began acting strange and aggressive following a pain in his throat. He reportedly bit his father, threatened to cut off his own penis, and complained of a python or snake inside of him before his family restrained him to a bed with cable ties and excessive force.
As the BBC reported:
“The family then set about attempting to ‘cure’ Kennedy through restraint and prayer over the next three days, the court was told.”
His brother, Colin Ife, told police:
“It’s clear that thing was in him, what we believed was a demon because it was not natural. It was clearly trying to kill him,” he said.
“We had to restrain him for himself. It was clear if we didn’t restrain him, he could have tried to harm people in our family.”
Kennedy Ife had been bound to his bed for three days without medical attention when his brother called emergency services, explaining that Kennedy Ife was complaining of dehydration. He appeared to have developed breathing issues, and was pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m.
As The Independent reported:
While police were at the house Colin Ife allegedly carried out an “attempted resurrection” by chanting and praying for Mr. Ife.
All seven of Kennedy Ife’s family members were accused of manslaughter, false imprisonment, and causing or allowing the death of a vulnerable adult. A post-mortem examination revealed over 60 wounds including a possible bite on Kennedy Ife’s body, and his father, Kenneth Ife, along with four of his brothers, sustained injuries as well.

The BBC reported:
Kenneth Ife told jurors he ordered his sons to take shifts and use "overwhelming force" but denied that an "association with cults, occults and secret societies" played any part in the death.
After a four day jury deliberation, all seven family members were cleared of charges on March 14, 2019.

Dead Animals in the Walls

When the Bretzuis family decided to insulate their home in Auburn, Pennsylvania in 2015, they discovered that it had already been—with scores of dead animal carcasses.
As Fox reported:
The dead animals were wrapped in newspapers from the 1930s and 40s and were among half-used spices, and other items.
After removing the items they sent hundreds of artifacts and carcasses to an expert in Kutztown.
The expert attributed the rotting animals in their walls to Pow-wow or Dutch magic, a ritual originating in the culture of the Pennsylvania Dutch to treat ailments and gain physical and spiritual protection. The Pennsylvania Dutch were a group of German-speaking settlers to Pennsylvania in the 1600 and 1700’s, and are often of Lutheran, Mennonite, or Amish faiths.
The Washington Post notes on the magic:
Many of the spells deal with the care of livestock, finding water, or the treatment of minor ailments, reflecting the conditions and concerns of early American settlers.
But powwow also has within it a tradition of darker spells, and even of such things as conjuring demons.
One notable ritual in their tradition is this hex to create loyalty in a dog:
To attach a dog to a person, provided nothing else was used before to effect it: Try to draw some of your blood, and let the dog eat it along with his food, and he will stay with you.
The mold found on the rotting carcasses in the Bretzuis home has caused illness among the family members, and they say that the odor hasn’t gone away.

Florida Devil Worshipping

Friends noticed that Danielle Harkins, a 35-year-old schoolteacher near St. Petersburg, Florida, started acting strangely in June of 2012, developing an interest in demonic rituals.
Soon after, she was arrested for abuse of seven of her former students, as the Tampa Bay Times reported:
Danielle Harkins told the kids they needed to rid their bodies of demons as the group gathered before dusk Saturday around a small fire near the St. Petersburg Pier. They should cut their skin to let the evil spirits out, police said she told the children. Then, they needed to burn the wounds to ensure that those spirits would not return.
When Harkins held a lighter to one teen's hand, wind blew the flame out, police said. That prompted her to douse his hand in perfume before setting it on fire. The boy suffered second-degree burns, police said.
Another teen was cut on the neck with a broken bottle, police said. Harkins used a flame to heat a small key, which she then used to cauterize the wound.
The police were notified because a friend of one of the students who participated in the ritual raised alarms. However none of the students themselves told their parents about the event or would comment following the arrest of Harkins for aggravated battery and child abuse.
NBC reported:
Investigators said they've spoken to Harkins, but she didn't spell out what type of religion would require such drastic measures.
"She hasn't informed us exactly what she was trying to accomplish with this," Puetz [of the St. Petersburg Police Department] said.

The Death of Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam was last seen on January 31, 2013 in the lobby of the Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. She was vacationing through the West Coast, documenting the trip on her blog, and checking in with her parents every day. On January 31 those calls stopped. Lam had vanished. Soon the police were involved and her parents arrived to help with the search.
They had nothing. That February, LAPD released elevator surveillance footage of Lam before her disappearance. The footage shows Lam behaving strangely in the elevator, appearing to talk with invisible people, peering around the corner of the door, crouching in the corner, and opening and closing the door. But what exactly is going on in this video raises more questions than answers. Theories range from psychotic episodes, to demonic possession, to unknown assailants just out of the camera's view:

Around that time, hotel guests started reported weird things happening with the Cecil Hotel water supply. As CNN reports:

"The shower was awful," said Sabina Baugh, who spent eight days there during the investigation. "When you turned the tap on, the water was coming black first for two seconds and then it was going back to normal."The tap water "tasted horrible," Baugh said. "It had a very funny, sweety, disgusting taste. It's a very strange taste. I can barely describe it."But for a week, they never complained. "We never thought anything of it," she said. "We thought it was just the way it was here."
On the morning of February 19, a hotel employee climbed to the roof and used a ladder to investigate the hotel's water storage tanks. That's where authorities found the decomposing, naked body of Lam, whose personal items were found nearby. After an autopsy, her death was labeled accidental. NBC Los Angeles reported at the time about the strange circumstances in the hotel's past:
The tank has a metal latch that can be opened, but authorities said access to the roof is secured with an alarm and lock. The single-room-occupancy hotel has an unusual history. "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez, who was found guilty of 14 slayings in the 1980s, lived on the 14th floor for several months in 1985. And international serial killer Jack Unterweger is suspected of murdering three prostitutes during the time he lived there in 1991. He killed himself in jail in 1994.In 1962, a female occupant jumped out of one the hotel's windows, killing herself and a pedestrian on whom she landed.
In February 2021, a Netflix doc called Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel explored Elisa's tragic case and the history of the "cursed" Cecil Hotel.

An Exorcism in Indianapolis

Last year, the Indianapolis Star published a lengthy report on a family terrorized by three children allegedly possessed by demons. The account of Latoya Ammons and her family tells disturbing stories of children climbing up the walls, getting thrown across rooms, and children threatening doctors in deep unnatural voices. It would seem like something straight out of a movie–a work of fantasy, except all of these accounts were more or less corroborated with "nearly 800 pages of official records obtained by the Indianapolis Star and recounted in more than a dozen interviews with police, DCS personnel, psychologists, family members and a Catholic priest."
One of the more chilling sections of the report includes a segment about the possessed 9-year-old:
According to Washington's original DCS report—an account corroborated by Walker, the nurse—the 9-year-old had a "weird grin" and walked backward up a wall to the ceiling. He then flipped over Campbell, landing on his feet. He never let go of his grandmother's hand.
Another segment of the piece reads:
The 12-year-old would later tell mental health professionals that she sometimes felt as if she were being choked and held down so she couldn't speak or move. She said she heard a voice say she'd never see her family again and wouldn't live another 20 minutes.

Utah Murder-Suicide

In September of 2014, a Utah teen returned to his home to find his parents and three siblings dead. "In a notebook, a 'to-do list' had been scribbled on the pages ... The list looked as if the parents were readying to go on vacation—items such as 'feed the pets' and 'find someone to watch after the house' were written," The Salt Lake Tribune reported. It appeared to be murder-suicide, but there was no suicide note, no prior indication that they would do this, no explanation. Police could not figure out why two parents would kill themselves and three of their four children.
For a year, no one knew exactly what happened to the family, or what would drive the parents to do something so unthinkable. In January, police released more chilling details in the case. According to accounts from family members and an investigation by police, the parents were driven by a belief that the apocalypse was coming and an obsession with a convicted killer. As the Washington Post reported:
Friends and family told police that the parents were worried about the "evil in the world" and wanted to escape a "pending apocalypse." But most assumed they just wanted to move somewhere "off the grid." Investigators also found letters written by Kristi Strack to one of the state's most infamous convicted killers, Dan Lafferty, who was convicted in the 1984 fatal stabbing of his sister-in-law and her 1-year-old daughter. According to trial testimony, he killed the victims at the order of his brother, Ron Lafferty, who claimed to have had a revelation from God. The story became a book called "Under the Banner of Heaven."Police said Kristi Strack became friends with Dan Lafferty, and she and her husband even visited him in prison.

The Phone Stalker

In 2007, ABC news documented a series of cell phone calls to families with terrifyingly specific death threats. The unidentified callers knew exactly what families were doing and what they were wearing.
The families say the calls come in at all hours of the night, threatening to kill their children, their pets and grandparents. Voice mails arrive, playing recordings of their private conversations, including one with a local police detective. The caller knows, the families said, what they're wearing and what they're doing. And after months of investigating, police seem powerless to stop them.
This went on with the Kuykenall family for months, who reported a caller with a scratchy voice threatening to slit their throats.
When the Fircrest, Wash., police tried to find the culprit, the calls were traced back to the Kuykendalls' own phones -- even when they were turned off.It got worse. The Kuykendalls and two other Fircrest families told ABC News that they believe the callers are using their cell phones to spy on them. They say the hackers know their every move: where they are, what they're doing and what they're wearing. The callers have recorded private conversations, the families and police said, including a meeting with a local detective.

"The Watcher"

After moving into their $1.3 million dream home, a New Jersey family started receiving creepy death threats from someone who identified themselves as "The Watcher." As CBS News reported earlier this year:

Since moving in, the owners said they have received numerous letters from the mysterious person. "The Watcher" claimed the home "has been the subject of my family for decades," and "I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming," Castro reported. The new owners have several children, and other letters asked, "Have they found out what's in the walls yet?" and "I am pleased to know your names now, and the name of the young blood you have brought to me."
The family was forced to flee from their home and later filed a lawsuit against the previous owners.

Issei the Cannibal

In 1974, 24-year-old Wako University student Issei Sagawa allegedly followed a German woman to her home in Tokyo, Japan, broke into her apartment while she was sleeping, and attempted to cut a piece of flesh off her body to consume. When she awoke, she reportedly fought him and he was later captured by the police. According to a 2012 Vice documentary that covered Issei's bizarre story, he was mistakenly charged with attempted rape and his wealthy father paid the victim a settlement outside of court to have the charges dropped.
Seven years later, in 1981, he allegedly committed a murder in France—shooting and eating a fellow University student, Renée Hartevelt. Issei creepily documented the entire experience with photographs and he was captured by authorities once again while attempting to dump the rest of her body in the Bois de Boulogne lake. He was deported back to Japan and committed to a mental institution. For reason unknown, his psychologists in Japan declared that he was sane. Furthermore, a legal technicality involving the French government refusing to turn over the documents from his case meant that his murder charges were dropped completely. He checked himself out of the mental hospital and has reportedly been walking the streets as a free man ever since. Issei has even become a controversial celebrity, writing over 20 books. According to Japan Today, he most recently fantasized about an unnamed TV actress, saying:
"I'll catch a glimpse of her thigh and think, 'That sure looks tasty.' But I don't feel like I actually want to eat it. As I accomplished the act of cannibalism once, there's no meaning to maintaining the desire for it anymore. In my book, I wrote that it [human flesh] was tasty, but that was not really true; I'd much rather eat Matsuzaka (Kobe) beef. But because I'd desired to consume human flesh for so long, I'd managed to convince myself that it would necessarily be delicious."
Issei Sagawa was also referenced in the Rolling Stones song "Too Much Blood," with the lyrics reading: "And when he ate her he took her bones/To the Bois de Boulogne." He is currently 73 years old and continues to live in Kawaski City, Japan. To this day, no one knows why France did not allow Japan to give him a trial.
