Today I took a 2 hour hike around town when it was supposed to be only 15 minutes
I went to west end library then figured I’d walk up 20th st NW to get to DuPont circle park but somehow I went off course and walked all the way to 16th st got lost in adams morgan. I even tried to get a Lyft out of the forest of streets but the driver was somewhere else so I cancelled the ride.
Can someone tell me where this statue is? I stopped there to take a break before I got lost.
If you all saw a guy walking with a purple cane that was me. I’m so embarrassed. I added more picture to see if anyone knows where I was in the crazy maze of DC.
What should I do next time if I’m at a circle and straight up is the wrong direction? The gps doesn’t always help and yes I know there are busses and metro but there wasn’t a close bus stop near west end library and I really like going to DuPont circle to chill even though the benches are broken as you see in some pictures.

2023.06.05 04:56 sib9518 Zone parking "buffer only"?

I just got a car and got a zone parking permit for it. I don't really understand what buffer only means though. It looks like for zone 118, East Elm St is zone parking so I know I can park there, but West Elm St is "buffer only". Does that mean I can still park on that street?

2023.06.05 04:34 Mean-Classic-7739 Something in the blizzard pt.1

This file comes from accounts of the [REDACTED] incident that took place [REDACTED].
The memories of [REDACTED] were successfully acquired for the best possible retelling.
The account:
PROLOGUE
Weather reports are saying a massive blizzard from the northernmost parts of Alaska will begin making its way down the west coast. Most are saying that the storm will hit us next week. People are calling it the storm of the decade, so sorry folks it looks like spring hasn’t sprung just yet.
The reporter continued but I stopped listening as my dad sputtered out: “Why in the heck do they expect me to believe that? This is bull crap I’m telling you complete bull crap. Blizzards don’t happen in April!”
Part of me wanted to stop and explain to him why the newsman was probably right but I knew my dad wouldn’t believe me. You see, in his old age, my dad had become quite well crazy. He didn’t trust anyone or anything and had gotten really into conspiracy theories.
“Dad, you can’t just dismiss facts and science like that,” My sister Gretchen said.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about. They don’t know what they’re talking about, if you had only seen…” My dad was yelling before I cut him off, “Shut up!”
“Why the heck do you think you can talk to your daughter like that!” I screamed at him.
“What the heck, you’re talking like she wasn’t the one who was trying to tell me what to do!” He yelled again, and at this point, I gave up and left the room.
I found Gretchen. She stood in front of the mirror in the hall I stood next to her and looked into the reflection despite me and Gretchen being 9 years apart and having different moms we almost looked like twins. We both had short straight black hair, dark brown eyes, pale complections, and stood nearly the same height.
“I miss how he used to be,” She said somberly.
“I know me too sis,” I said leaning in and hugging her.
“Let's go,” She said softly.
I nodded and we both left, not bothering to say goodbye. I drove the short 20-minute drive to our house.
When Gretchen was 8 her mom died and my dad remarried a year later and they had me. They bought a small 1 story house in a nice rural neighborhood, then two years later they divorced and my mother got authority over us kids. Me and Gretchen never really moved out, because well the house was big. Despite being one story it was quite spacious and oddly built. It was much longer than it was wide. One long hallway ran the whole interior from the fireplace on one end of the house. To the fireplace on the other end of the house. It had a small kitchen, dining room, and four bedrooms along with a tiny library. In addition, it had a basement. The basement was like a large studio apartment with a kitchen/dining room, 2 bedrooms, and a large hang-out area.
Me and Gretchen walked inside and were immediately greeted by May, Moore, and Herman, our three dogs. May and Moore were both Australian shepherds, and Herman was an absolutely massive Saint Bernard.
Herman jumped up onto me, almost making me topple to the ground.
“Woah, easy boy,” I exclaimed, giving the big dog a pat on the head as I pushed him off.
“Hi sweeties,” I heard our mom say from the kitchen.
I stepped into the kitchen and saw Mom busy making dinner. Our mom was short with long brown hair and bright blue eyes
“Hi Mom,” I greeted, stepping over and giving her a huge hug.
“Where’s Chloe?” I asked quickly.
“And where’s the kids?” Gretchen asked after also hugging Mom.
“Chloe's downstairs playing with the kids,” Mom explained.
We both hurried down the hall and then down the stairs into the lounge. A mess of legos was on the floor and playing in this mess was Gretchen's sons.
Her first son was named Alby. He is 8 and is rather quiet, he usually has his head in a book and the only thing that consistently gets him outside is the dogs, or going fishing with his dad. Like his mom, he has straight black hair. He wears rectangular glasses and has hazel eyes.
The Second is Alan. Alan is 5 and is always wanting to play having a seemingly endless amount of energy. He had dirty blonde hair with hazel eyes and is fairly tall and stocky for his age.
Third and last is Aaron. Aaron is 3, and he doesn’t talk much. He is almost like Alan's shadow following him along and doing the same thing as Alan. He is tiny with blonde hair and dark brown eyes.
Alan and Aaron were seemingly having a war with Lego dinosaurs, Alby seemed to be constructing a car, and sitting on the couch behind them was Chloe.
Chloe is very pretty with light silky blonde hair that fell just past her shoulders, icy blue eyes that seemed almost impossible to look away from, pale skin, and an adorable smile.
The moment me and Gretchen were down those stairs Alan and Aaron had run up and hugged her.
“Mommy mommy!” They both yelled in excitement.
Chloe perked up and gave me a huge smile.
“Hi babe, didn’t know you’d be back so soon.” She exclaimed as she got up and hugged me.
“My dad yelled at Gretchen,” I said simply and we left it at that.
The blizzard people are now calling snowmageddon should hit us tomorrow and will likely cause a complete loss of power, and the government is mandating that by tomorrow no one is allowed to exit or leave town. They did not try to better explain this…
Chloe clicked off the tv. The storm was already making her nervous enough and she wanted to hear nothing more about it.
“Are you sure we have enough firewood?” Chloe asked, looking at me worried.
“We’ve got enough firewood to last three winters, babe,” I exaggerated.
“What about food, do we have enough food?” She asked, my words not getting to her.
“We could use a few more things, but I’m going to…” I was saying before Chloe interrupted: “Let's go now I want to make sure we have everything we need.”
“Ok babe, I’ll go get my jacket,” I said standing up from the couch and walking over to the bedroom.
I grabbed my jacket and shoes and met Chloe upstairs by the front door. She seemed excited that she wasn’t sitting around worrying and I think that’s why she wanted to go so bad.
“Hey Mom, Gretchen, we are going to the store, do you guys need anything?” I asked them both who were sitting in the kitchen.
“We need batteries, Joey.” My mom responded simply.
“Ok, batteries, anything else?”
“Nope,” They both said quickly.
Me and Chloe stepped outside the house and walked over to my jeep and got in. I pulled out of the driveway and looked around, our neighborhood had a very interesting layout. The houses were spaced out but not an extraordinary amount, just more than you’d see in the average neighborhood. Each house was probably 400 feet apart from each other. Our neighborhood also had a lot of trees, so many in fact that it was hard to see your neighbor's house through them. I could vaguely make out the Marley's house to the right, and to the left, I saw the Richardson's house. Both were older couples that had far much more than they needed.
But the more important thing I observed was that it seemed everyone was packing up. Multiple cars were out in their driveways with people hurriedly rushing in and out of the house with things. I pulled up next to the Richardsons' car and rolled down the window.
“Hey Greg, y'all leaving?” I asked, giving him a polite smile.
Greg Richardson looked over from the back of his van: “Yep, some people are saying the mountains are going to slow down the storm and that it could be here for a few days, so we’re leaving to be on the safe side.” He explained.
“I haven’t heard anything about that,” I exclaimed, a little more concerned about the blizzard now.
“Yeah, well y’all be safe,” He said, giving us a smile and a wave.
“You too,” I said, giving him a wave and then continuing our journey toward the store.
“Wow, there’s a lot of people leaving,” Chloe exclaimed with a slight shock and fear in her voice.
I let my eyes wander while trying to keep my eyes on the road. She was right, almost everyone was leaving town.
“Do you think we should leave?” Chloe asked me, eyeing the packed cars.
“No point, even if we wanted to, the storm would probably catch us in traffic because of all the people leaving,” I said and noticed her momentary worries dissipate.
After a couple of minutes, we pulled in front of the store. It was old, still styled like a store in the 80s. It was very busy today and me and Chloe had to park on the street. As we walked toward the store I felt a chill in the air. I could tell Chloe felt it too because she wrapped one arm around me and cuddled next to me as we walked.
We entered the store and it looked like a tornado had gone through it. Things were lying on the floor and almost everything was gone. There was a long line in front of the counter where the cashier sat. I knew the cashier, her name was Lacy, she was 17 and the daughter of the owner. Just then the owner Carl appeared from around the corner.
Carl was a very short guy with round glasses, dark brown hair, and a very poor attempt at a comb-over.
“Hey Joey and Chloe,” He greeted a large smile etched on his face.
We both smiled back, “How are you doing Carl?” Chloe asked.
“Doing the best I can, basically everyone who’s staying in town has come to stock up.” He explained, “You two staying in town?” He then asked.
“Yeah, just going to hold out,” I grinned a little excited to spend a few days not having to do anything.
“Alright, well if you need anything just give a holler,” He instructed before hurrying off to do something.
Me and Chloe grabbed baskets and split up to get everything we needed.
We met by the register after and waited in line during which I got a call. I pulled my phone out and saw it was from Dad. I thought about not answering but decided I’d better answer.
Before I could even greet him my dad had started on a rant: “Joey you and everybody need to get out of town right now. You gotta get out of there, they’ll escape from the lab and kill you if you don’t… their creatures they’ll kill you…” He tried to continue but I interrupted him, “I don’t know what you're going on about but I’m done.”
I hung up and Chloe gave me a worried look: “Who was it?”
“My dad, going off on his ramblings again,” I told her simply.
She nodded: “Anything I should know?”
“No he’s just being paranoid,” I explained.
We both stood there for a minute watching more people around the store fill their carts with things. One woman behind us had a shopping cart full of toilet paper. Then I noticed Chloe’s head turn toward the window.
“Hey look, it's started,” She exclaimed looking out the window.
I looked out and saw snow slowly beginning to fall to the ground, and I felt a deep sense of dread as it did.

In general, the original year published takes precedence. No games that played betteare more iconic/are more remembered in an earlier or later era.
"Sonic the Hedgehog" was released for Sega Master System, but as a port, it was made for the Sega Genesis, so it is not eligible for this poll.
"Tetris" made its biggest impact with 35 million copies sold for the Game Boy, in the next era, so it is not eligible for this poll.
Arcade ports like the original "Mario Bros.", which hit arcades in 1983 are not eligible for this poll, even though they were ported to home consoles from the next generation.
1984's coin-op “Punch-Out!!”, was more iconic/more remembered as 1987's “Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!” on the NES, which is now eligible for this poll.
Instances like this can be debated. I think it's best to allow all games from a console to be designated to one era, and for games to appear in one era poll only.

The Idea:

Comparing, say, Pong and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, is not useful. It's like arguing which is better: the Ford Model T or the Space Shuttle? But comparing games of their era is interesting and fun! Usually, best game polls are limited to a single system. This poll is unique because it includes all platforms from the era together. How will the best arcade, computer and Master System games compete with the best that Nintendo had to offer? It will be interesting!

Why Only Arcade and Computer Games from 1985-1988?

The 3rd Generation of home consoles launched in the West with the NES in 1985 and changed everything. The Sega Genesis/Mega Drive launched in 1989, began the 4th generation of home consoles which will begin the era for the next series of polls after this concludes.

The Criteria:

I'll leave it up to the individual to decide. Innovation, quality, influence, iconic status, how much fun it was then, how it holds up today, are all valid. Whatever games you love, whatever games you want to see named as the greatest of the era.

What Happens Next:

Next week we will move on from the NES/Master System Era to the SNES/Genesis/TG-16 Era, for a new set of polls.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to vote in the polls and nominate games in the comments section.
This will be a series of polls I hope to hold every week for a long time! Have fun everyone!

2023.06.05 03:13 marchives The US position on Taiwan is rational from a realist American perspective

This was written in response to the posts on the potential rationalist merits of the Chinese position on Taiwan to reflect in turn on the potential rationalist merits of the American position. Like all great sweeping geopolitical takes, this was inspired by binge-watching pop television. For anyone bummed out that our modern era only has the risk of global conflict to worry about, rather than the childhood prospects of inter-planetary warfare that Starcraft promised us for our adulthood, I recommend "The Expanse.”
In that show, humanity on Earth and Mars have outsourced the art of war to the comfortably distant territory of the asteroid belt. The Belters eventually unite to resist these outsider-engineered conflicts and one faction comes up with the idea to take the devastation to the inner planets by attacking them. The people of the Belt are so used to the norm of the inner planets being untouchable by retaliation that when this man asks someone to guess at his plan, they can't because it's simply "unimaginable" in his own words: "You still don't see it. Can't even imagine it. This has always been a problem for our kind. Even our dreams are small."
From the American strategic perspective, maintaining its global hegemony serves the objective of similarly keeping such a nightmare idea "unimaginable" in regards to the CONUS, which has successfully escaped the reach of war since the end of their Civil War over a century and a half ago (until it was recently shattered in Spring 2023 by a visit from Goodyear's China office).
Unless a military conflict with China reaches the level of a ICBM/nuclear exchange, it will continue to be "unimaginable." The triumph of American grand strategy is that a PLA plan to invade CONUS has been reduced to being just as unrealistic as the declassified Pentagon plans to invade Canada and defend against aliens. The simple logic of US policy in East Asia is that if you pre-emptively stand in front of your opponent's house and threaten the man from stepping a foot out from his doorstep and enlist his next-door neighbors to oppose their every step down the lawn towards the street in turn, he'll be too preoccupied to ever walk across town to your own street.
This is the simple strategic logic of why the US will not concede its position on Taiwan. American hegemony has created an unprecedented safety net for the CONUS. CONUS has enjoyed this extreme latitude of conventionally untouchable safety for too long to give it up so freely and so, the plain truth is that there is no reason why the US should give away even an inch of its hegemonic presence in the Asia-Pacific in the present circumstance. All those counter-scenarios on the encirclement of China used to point out the unreasonable or hypocritical nature of the US position of "How would you feel if a PLAN naval group sailed off the coast of California in US EEZ" or "How would you feel if a PLA base was across the Rio Grande" are precisely why the US holds its "concede-no-inch" stance, because this policy continues to preserve those scenarios as perpetually hypothetical in nature.
If a war between the two does come, it'll be fought over Taiwan. Even if the US loses, it can simply retreat to the Second Island Chain and so forth. The hypothetical World War III, sans nuclear exchange ,at most would be an existential threat against American hegemony through its hold on the Western Pacific, but not actually America itself. Accomplishing wresting WestPac control from America as a military objective would be both arduous and satisfactory enough for China that it would take (disregarding nukes) a further World War IV for conflict on CONUS to be seriously imaginable as a plausible possibility.
Contrary to popular belief, the abdication of Britain's superpower position to the US was not a voluntary decision based on "It's okay since you're also white," though Brits might now use that to justify it as post-game locker room cope. America coerced Britain's surrender as a result of the latter's weak hand in the middle of World War II and the existential specter of the Battle of Britain as a demand of American Lend Lease (which was more transactional than the "we did this out of the goodness of our hearts for our civilizational Anglo brethren" charity take that worldnews likes to trot out to guilt-trip any Euros whenever they criticize US policy).
The purpose of this tangent is to show that unless a geopolitical scenario arises where China would be able in a position to draw similar concessions from the US, there is no incentive and no rationale for the US to concede from its Taiwan position in the current context.

2023.06.05 03:11 amipolitican THE FIRST DECREE OF AMIPOLITICAN, THE VICTORY IN WEST VIRGINIA!

THE FIRST DECREE OF AMIPOLITICAN, THE VICTORY IN WEST VIRGINIA!
Speech to a overwhelmingly supportive crowd in Charleston, WV.
"Citizens of the mountains, of our great state of West Virginia.
I have won the governorship. What will this mean? What does our future entail?
I will tell you, a new era for our people's state. Public works, educational reforms, labor reforms, and health reforms to raise our people's welfare in both the spiritual sense, and in the materialist sense. With this new victory, we will clean the streets of trash, people who wish to tear apart the unity of the culture of West Virginia.
We will among these things work to provide housing and employment to ever citizen of our nation, using the ample funds that our new lackeys at the top of the economic triangle will now be forced to pay for, no more shortcuts, or loopholes, they will pay their fair share!(Applause, cheers)With my new Lieutenant Governor, TheDimosiografos, we will together work to reform the state of West Virginia into a worker's commonwealth. What do I mean by this?
When I mean a worker's commonwealth, I mean in the sense, we will at every chance we have, crush unneeded bureaucracy, institute workplace democracy, and more direct forms of democracy in local elections. In every sense of the word, give the people of West Virginia the democratic means to achieve their liberty.(Applause)
Among all these great benefits (and more), we will provide to the West Virginian state, what former Governors could not.. Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness. From economic oppression, oppression that has for too long been ignored by our state, until now.
Onto the decree of my short address speech, to push forward the new state flag of West Virginia, as seen here in my hands, a blue background, with one center white triangle (to represent our fair Appalachia's)with the symbol of a pickaxe, and an axe to represent the large and main industries of our state, our state's being of prosperity, to represent the people who have built it. Finally marked by a star, representing one West Virginia, one above all.(Applause) "

Of the numerous realities in the multiverse, several have dealt with the presence of the being known as the Beyonder. Gifted with the same unimaginable power as the regular Earth 616 Beyonder, the other versions of himself have sometimes helped, but mostly harmed the inhabitants of their universes. Considering the multiversal nature of the 616 Beyonder and his species, it’s not clear what their exact relation to him is, but one thing is for certain. No matter the time or place, the Beyonder is not to be underestimated.

2023.06.05 01:36 overcasteuphoria Hi, I'm new here! I wrote a short prologue for a gay thriller I had churning in my brain called Violation. Let me know if you like it and please give me any feedback you have!

Prologue
Greg will be here tomorrow, and I know almost nothing about him. What I do know has been gathered from a few sparse moments with my best friend and annoying roommate, Nico: Greg is down on his luck. Greg’s got shitty parents. Greg only needs a place to stay until he can find a new job.
I won’t even notice he’s here.
I told Nico that isn’t as reassuring as he means it to be.
I’m scrubbing the kitchen, Nico is wiping down the bathroom, and Munchie the Lab is in the living room curled up in his bed. A chew toy dangles from his tired muzzle.
The whole house smells of chemicals. Every once in a while, I’ll see Nico dragging a filthy bucket of water up and down the stairs, bringing with him a stench of muck and ammonia. The house hasn’t seen a lick of fresh air in hours; I’ve felt a building knot of nausea in my gut from the fumes.
“Hey Nico!” I stop scrubbing the stove to call up to him. A bump and a splash of water later, and the skinny little man is making his way downstairs. He once again brings the bucket with him. The dirty thing sloshes water down each of the wooden steps, and by the time he reaches the bottom, the bucket is half empty.
“Yeah, what’s up?” He wipes sweat off his forehead, but it does him no good. It’s soaked into his hair, his shirt collar, and the waistband of his jeans.
“Why does the place have to be medical-grade clean?” I ask. “Is this guy a germ freak or something?”
Nico shakes his head. The bucket looks heavy hanging from his arm and he’s trembling from the weight of it. “Nah, that’s just what you do when you’ve got a guest staying with you. You know, etiquette and whatnot.”
“Yeah, etiquette,” I look around the kitchen. “Is this good enough? I wanted to talk to you.”
“About what?” Nico drops the bucket, the last of the water threatening to churn out onto the floor. It’s brown and home to floating bits of soap scum and probably pubes.
“Who is this guy?”
“I told you, he’s my friend Greg.”
“Okay, that tells me nothing about your friend Greg.”
Nico rolls his eyes. I can see the annoyance building in one of the veins on his brow.
“Why do you need to know everything about him? You won’t even know he’s here.” There it is again.
“I’ve known you for five years, Nico,” I say, “you have never mentioned ‘Greg.’ You haven’t even slept with any Greg’s.”
“No, but you did that one time in Key West!” He winks at me, surveys my progress, picks at a speck of dried spaghetti sauce on the wall, and flicks it into his bucket. “Quick question: Do I tell you every man I associate myself with?”
“You do actually, so it pisses me off that we’re going to have this guy leeching off of our food and utilities when I know nothing about him.”
Nico takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly through his lips while massaging his temples.
“I’m sorry,” he says, a rare occurrence for him. “I've been busy getting the place ready like you have, and I have a shit ton to deal with at the club. We can talk about it before I go to work later.”
“Why can’t we talk now?”
“Oh my god, Marcus!” The air in the room feels stale now, and that’s without the contribution of Windex and floor cleaner. Munchie lets out a low whimper from his bed.
Nico picks up the near-empty bucket and starts making his way up the stairs. “We’ll talk later. I’ve got like three rooms left to clean.” He takes one last gaze at the kitchen. “It looks great, by the way. Really spectacular. Thanks for being such a helper!”
“Oh, fuck off, Nico. Genuinely fuck right off.”
“Gladly!” He waddles his way up the steps like a penguin, the bucket bouncing against his leg and splashing water down his pants.
“You’re a pain in the ass!” I shout after him.
“I’ve been told!” He reaches the upper landing, turns, and disappears into the bathroom.
“Can’t wait to meet your new man!” I try to get the last word in, but find I'm only talking to the kitchen appliances, Munchie, and myself.
A wind is picking up outside, whipping between the other rickety houses dotting our street, and warning of rain in the air. The screen on our front door rattles and for the first time since moving in, I feel alone.

2023.06.05 01:13 RockNRoll1979 Food trucks in Brockville

I was wondering if there was a selection of food trucks in Brockville. I do stop by a couple of times a year, but the only ones I have seen are the Shady Coyote (hard to miss, really) and I think one near the river. Maybe it's bad timing on my behalf, or I'm not driving down the right streets. Here in the West end of Ottawa, there's a large number of trucks/outdoor shacks on the main streets.
I plan to move to Brockville in the next year or two and would love to have a nice list of places to try, both when I finally arrive and on my visits before then... if there's enough to fill a list, that is. Thanks!

2023.06.05 00:59 totallytoless242 I’m a Single Mom, so I Get to Run an Illegal AirBnB - Bad Neighbor Chronicles

Now that the Tish saga is done, it's time to move on to our landlord's retribution. This is a long one because I don't want to divide the story. TL;DR at the end.
Hubby and I lived in this apartment complex from 2016-2019. Until 2018, the apartment next to Tish's was rented by a Dominican couple who (apart from the Colosseum they erected in their living room every weekend for televised boxing matches) were very nice. So, Hubby and I were kind of bummed when the couple decided that they'd had enough of our complex. They came home one day to find at their doorstep a big-ass rat the size of a cat snacking merrily on some KFC bones that had dropped from Tish's garbage can. I would also argue that the couple probably found it hard to sleep with Tish's headboard slapping against their bedroom wall all weekend long (cue Vybez Kartel & Spice).
We were further disappointed when we realized they were being replaced by a mother and her two daughters. It's not that I don't like kids. I just that Jay wasn't exactly a model for confidence.
The family was quiet and timid, but it was clear they had problems. Big problems. According to what Tina would tell me in "casual" conversations in the laundry room, she had once sat upon her parents’ very high pedestal and - by her own account - had been violently shoved from that pedestal when she found herself pregnant with her first daughter. She'd tried to climb another very high pedestal and managed to stay there long enough to marry and have her second child, but "the cheating dog" had kicked Tina from the apex of prosperity to the pits of impoverishment once more. Heavy shit for laundry room talk.
But, it was hard to sympathize with Tina. The girls, unfortunately, seemed to understand all too well that they were Tina’s “burden”. The teenager (Mel) was ferrety and surly - which some would say is normal for a 15yo - but do 15yos spank their own sisters? Not fight - spank. As a parent would. And the 8yo, while sweet, tore through boundaries like acrylic nails through cheap toilet paper.
Tish immediately hated Tina because there was only enough room in this complex for one shit show at a time. Every time I saw Tish and Tina pass one another around the complex, the air would grow cold and the birds would flee to the West.
But, Tish and Jay left not long after Tina and her girls moved in. If y’all are looking for the catfight of the century, I am so sorry, but I must disappoint you. Jay's father returned from graduate school and got primary custody of Jay. That meant Tish was no longer entitled to child support, and she couldn't afford the apartment anymore. Hubby and I sacrificed a goat to the Most High in gratitude.
But then a few weeks after Tish and Jay left, Hubby and I noticed strange noises coming from the apartment upstairs. It should have been empty, but we heard chairs dragging against the floor at all hours of the evening. I called our landlord and asked if anyone had moved in, but she told us, "No."
"But there is someone upstairs," I told her. She dismissed me. Said there was no one up there.
Then why, only a few nights after that, was the security gate to Tish's old apartment open? And why were the lights on?
I called our landlord, but our landlord told me to take it easy, which was nice speak for "Leave me alone, you paranoid dumbfuck.”
Well, Hubby was sure some hobo was shacking up in Tish’s old apartment, which was highly likely considering where we lived. Our former apartment complex rests within one of the only remaining residential nooks in a fast-growing bacchanal city. On the street to the north is a string of touristy restaurants. On the street to the south is the sleaziest bar in five miles, and on the street to the right was a brothel masquerading as an AirBnB. It never once crossed my mind that the girls in 6-inch heels, batty riders, and lashes out to Wednesday walking up and down the road at 1:00 a.m. might were “working”
Anyway, Hubby decided to go check on the apartment upstairs, and lo - the security gate and front door were both unlocked. Hubby figured Tish or our landlord must have left the doors open by accident, which allowed whoever the hell it was dragging chairs over our heads to enter the vacant apartment. I passed this knowledge on to our landlord, who assured me that she’d send a locksmith to change the locks.
It was an evening after the locksmith changed the locks that Hubby and I came home late to find ourselves face-to-face with the intruder upstairs. At the door to Tish’s old apartment was Mel. With her was a man who, though young, was clearly older than Mel, picking at the security gate lock.
When Mel saw us, she jumped so high she nearly took down some shingles from the roof. The young man, however, bid us a very cordial good evening. Then, he finished picking the locks to the doors and entered the apartment. Yes, my dear people. Mel had broken into the apartment upstairs and set up camp.
You better believe I called my landlord and told her about what we’d just seen. She was shocked. Was I sure that’s who I’d seen breaking into the apartment? Mel was such a mannerly, mature young woman. It must have been someone else! I guess I wasn't just a paranoid dumbfuck, but a blind one as well.
Anyway, a few days later, Mel and Tina started moving furniture into Tina’s apartment. They didn't say anything to us when they saw us. I wondered if I was the bad guy, but Hubby said no: I should call our landlord and report.
"Oh, don't worry about that. I told Tina that Mel could camp out there for a while."
What?
Well, friends, what happened was that our landlord called Tina to confront her about Mel breaking into the apartment. But then Tina told our landlord about her recent fall from grace and then lamented about the horrors of parenting a teenager all alone in a one-bedroom apartment. She cried so much that our landlord decided to make a deal. For $200 a month, Tina could rent the empty apartment for Mel under the condition that when a new tenant was found Mel would move out.
Okay, fine, I thought. If that's how you want to run your apartments, that's up to you. I'll stay out of your business next time.
And that's just what I did when I came home from work one day to find an American couple dressed in bathing suits trying to open the gate to the complex.
And I continued to do so the week after that when Hubby saw Mel cleaning the apartment while three Australian ladies grilled by the complex pool.
But, one night when a hooker knocked on our door, I'd had enough.
At first, I tried to give Tina and Mel the benefit of the doubt. Maybe this was something they had worked out with the landlord. Maybe this was actually the landlord playing her hand at AirBnB. So, I worded my texts carefully. Asked our landlord if she'd found a new tenant, since we'd seen some new people in the complex. If she'd been trying out short-term renting since so we noticed so many tourists roaming the complex. If she knew that there were strange people coming in and out every week. No reply.
Turns out we weren't the only tenants concerned - and ignored. Two of our other neighbors had also tried to contact our landlord to tell her about the strange tourists hanging bathing suits all over the fences and ordering "fair" company in the apartment above us. Our landlord, however, never responded to any of us. Didn't even blue tick.
By the time frat boys started renting the apartment, Hubby and I had had enough. We found a new apartment and gave notice. Oddly enough, our landlord got that message as soon as I sent it. She didn't bother asking us why we were moving out, and I didn't push the matter. I didn't even make a fuss when she didn't give us our security deposit back. In my city, it's rare you get that back anyhow.
But then a month later, I got a call from our old landlord. She said she'd assessed the apartment and found no damages, so she had our security deposit ready for us. I mean, money is money, and that was our money, so Hubby and I set a date to meet the landlord at the old place.
Our landlord was oddly chatty when we arrived. At first, we thought she was just excited because she was finally giving the complex a much-needed facelift. But then she started talking about Tina.
[Dramatization below]
Landlord: "Do you remember Tina?"
Hubby looks at me. I look at Hubby. “Of course."
Landlord: "Well, she doesn't live here anymore."
Crickets.
Landlord: "I evicted her."
Quizzical eyebrows.
Landlord: "You won't believe what she was doing."
Side eye-side eye.
Landlord: "Well, she was running an AirBnB! In the apartment right above you!"
Pikachu gasp: "No!"
Apparently, after we left, the landlord came to assess our apartment. When she entered the complex, who did she happen to run into?
A British couple in their bathing suits.
They asked her if she knew where the beach was, and the landlord gave them the directions in exchange for a glimpse at the AirBnB listing they'd contracted.
There it was - Tish's old apartment rented out at $800 a week!!! Take away the $200 a month Tina had arranged to rent the apartment, that was a $3000 profit!
The landlord confronted Tina, and as Tina packed her bags under the close supervision of a police officer, Tina railed on and on about how our landlord was being so cruel to a single mother. How could a fellow woman deny Tina the right to make a living for her girls? No one was using the apartment anyway! She'd sue, she sue for squatter's rights! She was a single mother!!!
So ends the Tina tale, but we have some extra credits. Our landlord realized how lucrative the AirBnB business could be, so she evicted all of the tenants and renovated the complex to open it up for short-term renting. That all came to an end when a 17yo boy drowned in the pool and the family sued the landlord for negligence.
All's well that end's well, eh?
TL;DR: Neighbor breaks into an empty apartment, manages to weasel the landlord into renting it to her for $200/month, and then sublets it on AirBnB for $800 a week!
