I know plenty have been bound to ask this before, but I need help in regards to my situation specifically.
I'm at the stage where I'm finalizing the sound mix for my film, but there’s a big problem I'm having: my mix sounds fantastic on full-range (frequency) speakers, but sounds awfully muddy on lower range speakers like my internal living room tv's (even though when I switch to cable television, the broadcasted audio for movies/shows sound fine???). I've gotten mixed advice online about how you should only cater to people who are willing to watch your film on good quality speakers, as well as other people saying that you should at least consider those who don't... in which I tend to agree more with the latter.
I edit with high quality headphones that can play back deep frequencies perfectly unlike most speakers I guess. I've also listened to the mix on my iPhone and iPad which sound great too since Apple has always made an effort to put good speakers in their products. The mix already sounds great on them which is why I'm hesitant to dumb it down for the sake of other playback devices. I'm also not in a great position to spend too much time 'finding the perfect balance' by plugging a variety of speakers into my PC and messing around with every audio track that I've already worked so hard on fine tuning. I'm editing a feature film by myself, there's only so much more I can do.
I'm basically looking for a life-hack here, if any. Maybe there's just something I'm missing? Is there an effect that I should throw over my whole mix when exporting? Saturation? Highpass? I'm terrified that the mix will sound bad when I premiere it at my local theater for the first time.
Small rant: It baffles me that the content I see everywhere on TV, YouTube, etc somehow manages to sound good wherever they are played, no matter the device... yet MY mixes only sound good on some devices. I've had this problem for so long with past projects, but I can't mess it up this time. It's got to be a simple trick I'm missing. There's no way I'm this bad at editing when theoretically, it should sound fine. It just seems like everyone has been able to figure this out except for me.
Yes I’ve edited exclusively on headphones, and I know there are some aspects you can’t get over when listening back to your edit from theater speakers coming from across the room (that’s the focus of this post). Like you’re not going to hear all the foley, bass drops, etc… but man is it painful, especially when bass-ier outdoor wind or indoor ambience just sounds like underwater muffled distortion that literally causes these low range speakers to start shaking physically. Please help me.
