2023.06.09 16:38 joeshmoe117117 My seat swap story that permanently changed my mind on ever being nice and trading seats with someone.

This was about 8 years ago. I'm dead tired. Working and tindering in NYC for the last week, my first trip ever there. I'm completely exhausted from working long hours and lack of sleep from going out at night. Flying direct back to SLC in the evening. I'm looking forward to crashing in my seat; I've prepped by taking some NyQuil sleeping pills. The seats to know are in row 12. ABC DEF.
When walking down the aisle to my row. Seats CDEF are all taken. I'm holding my ticket for 12F. Of course I mention to the woman in my seat that she has my seat. She claims it's hers and I must be mistaken. (See one sentence before holding my ticket in my hand). She has to dig through her bag forever to find her ticket to see she has 12A and asks if I'll just take her seat so she won't have to move as she's "settled". Fine. Same seat. It doesn't matter to me. I sit in 12A and fall asleep.
Some moments later the woman from 12F is standing in the aisle tapping my shoulder saying she needs her seat. She is holding her ticket and says she has claustrophobia and needs her seat (12B is empty so now 12A looks better than 12F). Well I'm sure she's full of shit and just wants to enjoy having the middle seat empty but what can I do? Technically she does hold that ticket and I'm tired and just want to sleep so I move to 12F. 12E and 11F both mention to me I'm too nice for putting up with this shit. I agree, but fuck it, I want to sleep so bad, so I fall back asleep.
Some moments later the woman is waking me up again. She is offering 12A back to me again as she is suffering from a panic attack and has decided to exit the plane. (The door still hadn't closed due to a delay waiting for a pilot). I nod to 12E saying he should take 12A. He'd have a better seat than the middle seat but he's "settled" so fuck it I move back over to 12A, 12E ends up sliding over to 12F of course and I fall asleep again.
Some moments later I'm awoken by a man standing in the aisle saying I'm in his seat. He's holding a freshly printed ticket for 12A as the plane door is still open and he was issued this seat after the claustrophobic woman left the plane. What can I do? He doesn't know everything that's happened, it's certainly officially his seat. I'm exhausted and look to 12C and say, "I'm sorry I'm just going to slide over to 12B, I'm not going to go take my seat back from 12E who is now in my seat 12F. I fall back to sleep.
Some moments later I'm awoken by the man in 12A who said I can take his seat as he's going to go to the back where there are more open seats. The plane has only now just closed the door after sitting at the gate for three hours and is prepping for take off as I settle back in to seat 12A once again to fall asleep.
TL;DR WTF is wrong with me, never give up your seat people.

2023.06.09 16:38 These_System_9669 Locator 11 Success!! (Barely, 1 Day to Spare)

Wanted to add my timeline to give anyone at Locator 11 some more visibility
DOT 6/10
Applied 3/10
Processed 3/15
Called NPIC to move to urgent status on 5/30. Paid for expedited to agency and overnight shipping but never saw the statue update and my card was never charged.
Called Congressman Deluzio (PA 17th District) on 6/2 and signed privacy waivers. They reached out to NYC Office and got a response that it was expedited, despite it not being reflected on the status checker.
Called both Senator Fetterman and Casey's (PA) offices on 6/5 as I was starting to panic.
Continued to work with Congressman's office. They kept calling for appointments and checking to verify on status but no luck.
Senator Casey and Fettterman's offices called back on 6/6 to offer help. They issued a passport specialist to the case.
6/8 Congressman's office tried one last time for an in-person appointment, but no luck. All booked. Called all day long as well, no appointments. Later that day they did make contact through email with NY Congressional Liason to the agency. The weird thing was that they said it was never expedited and is still routine (there was a failure to change its status somewhere between NPIC and NYC agency). I paid to have it expedited and overnighted again and they sent my congressman's office a note saying it would be sent to a specialist to try to be pushed through. Later that evening at about 8 pm status was changed to expedited on the status checker. At 9 pm, the status changed to shipped, and tracking was provided with UPS Overnight Air method.
6/9 UPS delivered passport at 10 am with about 19 hours left.
I can finally breathe.
The advice I would give is what many other success stories will also give. Be persistent and polite. Do not give up and keep at it. Your elected officials are literally elected to help you with government agencies, so keep that in mind. I would also say that there are so many of us in the same situation, so when you are seven to ten days out and you are freaking out (much like I was), know that there is someone two days out or 24 hours out and that they are the priority of the agencies and your officials. So try not to get discouraged.
Also, try to have a contingency plan in place in case it doesn't work out. It's possible so best to be prepared.
I wish all of you the best of luck in this very frustrating process!

2023.06.09 15:49 baka-tari My first box of doorknobs

I started my military career in June of on Sand Hill at Fort Benning. I can still tell you the unit I was in for Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training), and the names of my Drill Sergeants . . . this knowledge is embedded in my DNA, it's like a cheap tattoo etched inside my eyelids. I will know I'm senile when I can't pop out those details at the drop of a hat.
It was in my 13 weeks of Basic Training and Infantry AIT where I first got acquainted with the wide range of colorful people I'd encounter in the Army. In my platoon we had delinquents who could barely get moral waivers that were battle-buddied with college boys who'd lived charmed lives; we had "old men" of 30 wanting to do their patriotic duty that were battle-buddied with kids so young and green they shaved twice a week whether they needed to or not. We had Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves and even a couple of MOS reclasses.
On top of all that, we had Waters.
Private Waters was born with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). His mom simply could not turn off the tap while she was pregnant with him - he carried that burden throughout his life. Folks with severe FAS have a look about them. Just as you can unfailingly recognize a person with Down Syndrome, you can look at a person with severe FAS and know it immediately.
Go ahead, take a minute to do a google image search on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - you'll see what I mean.
♫ . . . . . the girl from Ipanema goes walking . . . . . . . ♫ . . .
Welcome back. See any features you recognize on someone you know? Explains a lot, doesn't it?
Severe FAS can result in problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, or hearing, among other things. Waters definitely had issues with the first four on that list.
Here's the thing, though: Waters wanted to be there at Infantry school. He volunteered to join the Army. He mustered enough concentration to take - and at least minimally pass - the ASVAB. I don't know what his score was, but it was enough.
Whenever someone gives me shit about soldiers being brainless, I have a canned response that's based in bitter personal experience: Yep, soldiers can be stupid, but you have to pass a test to get into the military. Any dumbass motherfucker can be a civilian.
We all knew that Waters needed some extra guardrails, and all of us in that basic training platoon stepped up to help him through. This could be a problem sometimes. For example, Private Tentpeg would walk past Waters in the morning and remind him to make his bunk before heading to formation. So Waters would start making his bunk. Then Private Snuffy would walk past, see Waters was making his bunk (and think to himself "Yay! Waters remembered to make his bunk today!") - then he'd remind Waters to square away his wall locker before heading down to formation.
Do you see where this is going?
Hearing Snuffy, Waters would go start to square away his wall locker. If you asked him in that moment if his bunk was good to go, he'd tell you it was, because he remembered that he had started to make it. He just couldn't remember if he had remembered to finish it. If he was then distracted by something else while working on his wall locker, he'd also insist that his wall locker was squared away, and for the same reason. If he looked at any of those items again, he might realize he needed to finish them, but he didn't operate well without either a really obvious visual cue or someone directing him. The latter usually produced better results.
He wasn't much better physically. To see Waters run, do pushup or situps, try jumping ja- . . . er, "side straddle hop" - or even march, tbh - the only phrase that came to mind was "like a monkey fucking a football." So. Much. Uncoordination. The final PT test almost sank his timely graduation.
In one instance, Waters came to me complaining that he was missing a button from his BDU blouse (BDU's? Fuck, I'm old). It wouldn't button up correctly, and could I give him a hand? I looked at it for a couple seconds and could see that he'd started with the wrong button in the bottom button hole. I calmly explained this to him and helped him correct his mistake. I'd learned early on it didn't do any good to get upset at Waters - he couldn't help it and yelling didn't fix the problem. He got a sheepish look on his face as I adjusted his buttons, was a little embarrassed, and said simply "I'm sorry, I get like that sometimes."
Me: I know, Waters. It's okay, we've got your back.
And that's just the thing - he knew. All his life, Waters knew he was a little short upstairs. But that didn't stop him from trying. He asked for help, he accepted the help, and he worked hard to overcome his limitations. On top of that he was a team player and he didn't shirk hard work. It was because of his attitude and commitment that the rest of us helped him along. We pushed, and pulled, and coached, and looked after him all the way through 13 weeks of Infantry training. In the end Waters met the standards - on his own and just barely - but goddamnit he graduated with the rest of us and didn't get recycled.
We weren't thinking about it at the time, just being fresh in the Army ourselves, but looking back I'm pretty sure there was a Squad Leader, a Platoon Sergeant, and a First Sergeant who were cursing us and our Drill Sergeants when Waters showed up at his first assignment. I never knew if, or how long, he lasted on active duty.
Sure, he was about as sharp as a box of doorknobs, and definitely frustrating sometimes, but he was our teammate and as long as he kept trying we weren't going to let him fail. That lesson of teamwork and cohesion stuck with me through 27 years of service, and I carry it still. I've known a lot smarter people who can't be bothered to put in half the effort that Waters did. I don't have time for them, but I will always help someone who is working hard to help themselves.

2023.06.09 15:37 Eldritch_Harrr Vaporwave, black screens and drivers, oh my!

Vaporwave, black screens and drivers, oh my!
So apparently getting a “black screen” after installing new drivers is not an unheard-of issue, but after searching high and low, I can only conclude that either I’m dumber than I thought OR my situation is not the same kind of “black screen” problem. Basically, my computer refuses to turn on my screen after startup, but I can still hear my on-startup programs running like normal and my keyboard inputs still work, so it’s not frozen. Trust me, it sounds a lot simpler than it actually is. I’m not scared the problems are permanent but I REALLY need help fixing it here. Let me try and lay out the events of the last two hours.
1. I’m playing monster hunter with my friends when the game crashes harder than it’s ever crashed before and perma-lags my entire computer. An error pops up on my screen saying “Startmenuexper” was prevented from interacting with my graphics device. After a restart to fix the lag and some fiddling with my anti-virus (thank you google) I start the game up again and hop back in with my friends. No crash, problem solved.
2. Everyone signs off for the night and I close my game without a problem. Unfortunately, it seems I just solved one problem by creating a much worse one, because I start getting a lot of really distracting lines glitching across my screen in short intervals. Super stereotypical horror movie stuff. I sigh and go through the ol’ logout and then the restart etc, you know the drill. No dice. I then find that my drivers haven’t updated in two years, so I go check out AMD to see why radeon hasn’t auto updated since then. I don’t get my answer but I do find a more recent version, so I download the installer and proceed to make a massive mistake because I’ve been awake for 32 hours or so.
3. I initiate the installer before uninstalling my previous version in any manner. The estimated time to completion says 3 minutes. After a few seconds, my screen goes dark. This is expected, of course, but I get nervous when it doesn’t come back on after five minutes have passed. I hit my caps-lock, the button lights up fine. I hit the pause/play button, I can hear the last youtube video I had playing. The screen is NOT displaying a black image (see picture 1), it’s not displaying anything at all (see picture 2) I un-and-re-plug the HDMI, try switching ports, the whole nine. Nothing. Since I still have like 4 hours till bedtime, I’m not just gonna stare at this monitor having no way of knowing if it’s still installing or not. Enter second massive mistake.
4. I hold down the power button to force-shut-down. It doesn’t. I turn off the power supply, then turn it back on. Same as before. A lot of googling later, it seems the best way to fix this problem is to clean and re-install stuff and things like that. Unfortunately, that implies that I should be able to do ANYTHING, but I am 100 percent blind without my screen. So I manage to launch in safe mode and… well, see picture 3. My computer goes vaporwave. I try to follow as many instructions online from my phone as I can to fix this, navigating the barely-legible text, but nothing works. Launching normally still functions but without my screen, and safe mode still looks green as the grinch and blocky as tetris… except when it’s randomly yellow instead? (See picture 4)
I’ve tried everything I can think of and google only gives me solutions to a very similar but apparently different problem. So now I reach out to all of you in my time of need. Has anyone ever seen anything like this before? I’ll be eternally grateful to anyone who can offer assistance in reversing my dumbass shenanigans.

2023.06.09 15:27 ogwilson02 TIFU by not paying attention at all

This was about 6 months ago and I still think about it when I sleep at night. One of those embarrassing memories that are not only a beneficiary to insomnia but might as well be insomnia’s right hand man.
7 months ago I shipped out to Army Basic Training at Fort Sill, OK. Upon arrival you stay in a reception battalion until you get your medical shit cleared alongside a metric asston of paperwork. The reception battalion was also home to people who had gotten injured during actual basic, and were waiting to be medically discharged from the Army or wait to heal and restart basic at a later date. There was this one PFC there with a broken leg or something who would always give us advice, and since my group I shipped with and I were 1-2 days from shipping out, we had nothing to do and were talking to him about the experience, things to look out for and all that. He gave some decent advice, one that stuck out to me was “During Red Phase, they’ll have you do a bunch of pointless BS, mix and matching your clothes, yadda yadda.” This comes into play later.
Fast forward to Basic - it’s like day 3 of Red Phase (the initiation process where you do nothing but get fucked up for a few weeks along with learning the basics.) I’m in 4th Platoon - we’re on the drill pad around 1900/2000 after dinner getting smoked (push ups, air squats). Each platoon is getting smoked in their own different way. We had finished doing I don’t even remember how many burpees when our Drill Sergeant says “you have two minutes to run upstairs, grab a left PT shoe and a right boot, and get back down!”
I’m the furthest back left person in the formation and have the furthest bed from the door in the bay as well. As such, I was the last one upstairs, and by the time I’d made it to my locker everyone else was running downstairs. As I’m rummaging to grab my shoes.. that fuckin’ PFC from reception pops up in my head. A lightbulb popped on in my head bright enough to illuminate the ocean floor. “This must be what he meant by mismatching clothes!” (I should also add I wasn’t really paying attention when my DS gave that order. I was completely spaced out.
So, in what I thought was a moment of impeccable wisdom at the time, I secured my left PT shoe on my left foot and my right boot on my right foot. I run downstairs, turn the corner, and my heart immediately fills with enough adrenaline to kill an adult horse. I see the rest of my platoon in a squatting position, holding the shoes in front of them. I then look slightly to the right and could actually feel my bowels contracting and expanding, ready for excretion. All three of my platoons drill sergeants are staring at me with their mouths agape. At this point, I think ‘fuck it man, they already saw me, I gotta fall in’ and did the awkward lop-sided hop to the formation you would expect from someone wearing two completely different shaped and weighted shoes. After falling in my DS goes “ogwilson02 Get your ass up here!”
I stand in front of the formation as he proceeds to roast the absolute piss out of me lmao, “This is the motherfucker that will get you killed downrange! Look at your fucking battle buddy!” , then I proceeded to do flutter kicks for about 45 mins until it was time for bed. My platoon hated me for the next couple days but quickly changed as that was actually a minor fuckup compared to some of the shit those guys did. We never even ended up mismatching clothes, that fucker from reception knew exactly what he was doing. Damn you PFC Davis.
TL:DR; Didn’t pay attention to instructions in Basic. Wore mismatched shoes. Did lots of exercise to muscle failure.
EDIT: It actually didn’t end up so bad though, I remember when we were about a week from graduating our Drill Sergeants were shooting the shit with us in the bay, when they ask “Who was that fucking retard who came downstairs in a PT shoe and a boot in red phase?” Slowly raised my hand. They laughed for about 2 minutes and made me recreate it. Good times

Preserving a Professional Image: The exterior of your commercial building serves as the first impression for your clients, customers, and business partners. A well-maintained exterior portrays professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. Commercial painting plays a significant role in preserving the appearance of your building and ensuring it aligns with your brand image. By investing in regular painting maintenance, you can create a positive and inviting impression for anyone visiting your business.
Protection Against the Elements: Exterior surfaces are exposed to various weather conditions, including harsh sunlight, rain, snow, and temperature fluctuations. Over time, these elements can cause wear, fading, and deterioration of the building's exterior materials. Commercial painting acts as a protective barrier, shielding your building from the damaging effects of the weather. A fresh coat of paint helps prevent moisture intrusion, UV damage, and other forms of deterioration, extending the lifespan of your building's exterior.
Preventing Structural Damage: In addition to aesthetic benefits, commercial painting also helps prevent structural damage. When surfaces are left untreated or poorly maintained, they become susceptible to issues like rot, rust, and decay. Moisture penetration can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, compromising the integrity of your building. By addressing these issues promptly through commercial painting, you can mitigate potential structural damage and save on costly repairs in the long run.

2023.06.09 14:59 Vanguard_CK3 [Diplomacy] Guardians of the Mystical Realm: Swahili Coast

The Holy Order of the Guardians of the Mystical Realm, with the leader al Sayyid al Habib Umar heading the delegation, travelled to several countries in East Africa for the sake of Islam. For the east african regions from the Horn of Africa to the island of Madagascar, the historical route was that Islam arrived from South Arabia as evidenced by archeological studies of the early settlements In Pate, the early mosques in the 9th Century AD. By the 19th century, during the rise of the spiritual brotherhoods of the sufi orders, there had already been stablished networks and connections all over the Indian Ocean, as predominantly the areas were Shafi'i Sunnis due to the cultural exchanges with the Hadhramis, and stands to this day as Shafi'is in the entire indian ocean very clearly.
The reason why the sufi orders were so important is that they were the ones who could absorb everybody for people who came from Mainland or the people who came from the sea, that was like a space that could absorb all. In late 18th century, throughout 19th century and early 20th century we notice Islam in East Africa going through a reform reformation, we witness a renewed and more literate Islam where brotherhoods played a role in Islam's drive, and the rise of many scholars that adhere to different holy orders such as the Sumayt in Comoro Islands. The establishment of the Holy orders in this period was like a global phenomenon. There were many sufi orders, Qadiriya Sufi order was extremely influential in zanzibar and still is to this day and has very strong connections to the Mainland.
The Yemenis were very important in driving these Sufi brotherhoods in the Indian Ocean, in the sense that sort of spreading scruptiualism, the basis of Islam being in books and texts, ofcourse the revelation Quran and the books of Hadith, but also legal texts , smaller type prayers and mawlids. But there weren't mass movements, in the same way the Qadiriyya order which has recruited broadly with many Hadhramis were members of the Qadiriyya, being mostly non-exclusively through the Alawi sufi orders, and the Shadhiliya coming from the opposite way of the Comoros Islands which became a sort of place where Hadhramis joined.
The existing connections of the different tariqas made it easier to communicate with regional leaders within East African communities in the countries of Kenya, Tanzania and Comoros. There, they seemed to be able to strengthen their bonds by officially recruiting members of the various brotherhoods led by Hadhrami clergy. Their tasks ranged from overseeing affairs local masajid, madrasas, and maqabir under a single administration. Charities were established to look after orphans, widows, the elderly, and the needy, and Water wells were drilled and commissioned with approximately $20 million in donations. It has been estimated that approximately ten thousand new recruits of different brotherhoods have joined the ranks of the Guardians of the Mystical Realm, committing to uphold the Islamic principles that it had been doing on an individual basis now became a collective effort.

2023.06.09 14:45 GoStockGo Cutting-Edge AI for Mining Explorations: Windfall Geotek (TSXV: WIN, OTC: WINKF)

Windfall Geotek (TSXV: WIN, OTC: WINKF) uses AI for mining explorations. Doing this has several advantages, as it notably reduces costs and increases efficiency, and ultimately raises the company exploration success rate. Windfall also improved its financial statements by reducing expenses and augmenting its revenue.
https://preview.redd.it/up0qtz32nz4b1.png?width=258&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa3b3e6348bd21493773e2706b77ade02081cf21
WIN is not a mining company. It is a cutting-edge AI mining service that identifies drill targets, saving time and money and vastly reducing exploratory drilling. It was established in 2005.
https://preview.redd.it/8pdykcx5nz4b1.png?width=1677&format=png&auto=webp&s=8323c4e8cd61df53fc1ac171b781a1e9669c0381
Windfall Geotek’s AI technology analyzes geological data from various target sources to generate the highest probable drill targets. Its technology works for all metals. The company takes geological data from multiple sources, including drill holes and rock samples, publicly available sources, and others, to build models that can accurately predict where a particular metal or group of metals is likely to be found.
WIN’s value proposition? Instead of mining companies and engineers ‘guessing’ where to drill, Windfall’s AI technology uses machine learning to process large quantities of data to predict zones with the desired mineralization. The benefits are apparent, and the Company has put it in a very strong financial position.
Here is a link to WINN’s Equity Portfolio. Below the ‘assets held’ chart are the further significant Royalties payable to Windfall.
https://preview.redd.it/q76pcze9nz4b1.jpg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d58932ca2302257bbf6c403d1f58022170ebe5fd

WIN’s formative technology can be illustrated by delving into the Chapais area in Quebec.
Dinesh Kandanchatha, Chairman of Windfall Geotek, commented: “We are excited to partner with the team at Quebec Copper & Gold. Windfall Geotek intends to play a key part through our AI to help the project succeed.” Highlights of the Chapais Property: Large property with 36 claims and 1,560 hectares located 490 km northwest of Montreal. Road accessible with power grid access.”
Windfall Geotek AI system has generated significant gold, copper, and zinc targets across the entire land package.
The Chapais property was sold to Quebec Copper and Gold for 500,000 shares & issuing a 2% NSR subject to a 1% buyback. Windfall Geotek will take all available data and conduct a large-scale AI targeting project over both Opemiska & Chapais Project, which will then be owned by Quebec Copper & Gold.
Nathan Tribble P.Geo, WIN Director, commented: “The Chapais Property is well situated in a prolific region that has produced over 1 billion pounds of copper and 1 million ounces of gold. It’s exciting to see the large AI-generated targets within favorable rock types that were host to the historic Perry and Springer mines adjacent to our land package. During this new supercycle of electrification metals this is a fabulous project that should gain a lot of attention here in short order.”
Bottom Line
This story has legs. The ability to save money, time, and resources makes mineral exploration exceptionally cost-effective, raising profits while cutting costs. Logic dictates areas that might have been too expensive to do traditional discovery tests and processes are open.
It doesn’t get much more complicated. The advantage comes as Windfall Geotek advances its scope of business and leverages the ongoing development of its technology.

2023.06.09 14:39 Rio_Walker Chapter 22

With the extreme situation finally resolved, the attentive but weird part of my mind had settled back into place. Which prompted a zigzagging trail of thoughts.
The weird structure beneath the pillories reminded me of a drill, which made me think about TMNT 1987 with those tunnelers that delivered Shredder and his cronies. That, in turn, made me think about April O'Neil '87, which made me remember one YouTuber talking about a clear difference between the '87 cartoon and the Nickelodeon version, that was summed up by a sprite version of Zangief from Street Fighter singing "Titties, Titties, Titties, Krang and Technodrome" using Tarantella Napoletana as a background music, ending with "April - Titties!". This brought me to the conclusion that I really should make up with my mates as soon as I get back because I wanted to fondle some... again. I wanted to fall asleep holding a titty in each hand or even smooshed against some, motorboat them.
As I came back from my mind trip, I became increasingly aware that I was aching all over and, across my whole body, there was a sensation of tiny little bubbles popping in my skin, it was most pronounced in the areas where I had scales out. When I pressed my hand against the scales, I nearly burned myself! What is this heat?! Or... is this Heat? The presence of my mates made it barely noticeable, for the most part, but it was still there, yet, until now, I treated it like a background noise, pushing it down. And now, it was coming up to the surface, it seems. When I got knocked around and the Dragon took over, there was a deep-seated frustration that I felt and couldn't quite understand. When the Goddess... was done with me, she sped up the whole "Unification of the Spirit" as it were... But Dragon was still his own self, it seems, and he wasn't happy with me. The gold was what calmed him down, some. My Dragon wanted release, one way or the other, which is why it actually took over. I needed to do something about it, try and channel it while I'm in control, so that I wouldn't need to rely on being knocked around. And... let Dragon loose sometimes, out to play.
"This was a Dungeon root," mage informed me, as he approached. "His majesty found several of them across the land. They sprout from the Demonic Dungeon as the means of delivering something to the surface, or delivering someone to the dungeon." "Huh, so my wild guess was correct... Hold on, does that mean demons can invade at any moment? They can just ride one of these and attack anywhere!" "The dungeon roots can, and have, sprout inside the wall. The spatial properties of the Dungeon, allows it to bypass the Holy Barrier and the Death Wall," mage confirmed. "His Majesty had ordered the research when they first appeared, and we know their limits. They cannot be used for the full-scale invasion because they require nutrients to function and not just magic energy, and because His Majesty can track their appearance due to his connection to the Barrier. We cut them down quickly. They never get a chance to blossom." "Got it. Sorry to ask this late, but what is your name?" I felt embarrassed, but the mage was in good humor. "Alabastor, Hero. I understand how you might've been pre-occupied with something else. And I must apologize for being caught off-guard earlier," mage said. "You, however, handled it rather well, despite encountering these new demons for the first time. We have no record of them, and that explosion... If not for your fast reaction, we would have perished. Thank you for saving us." "I got really lucky there. I became complacent, sloppy," I shook my head. "Besides, it's your shield that protected us. Thank YOU." "That was the protective shell that your Dragon's spirit conjures in the event of mortal danger. The survival instinct." "Damn... Okay... Well. Regardless, y'all came through for me and I appreciate it. Let's just say that we're all did great," I slapped my face to keep my mind from panicking. "Uh... isn't the Dungeon meant to be conquered?" "The core of the dungeon takes several months to calibrate, during which the person who conquered it has to remain within the room, as all the exits will be closed. The only person who can successfully reach the Core is the King, and, perhaps, you." "The dungeon isn't under the World Tree, is it? Would fit the theme." Alabastor shook his head. "The dungeon lies deep beneath the cursed lands where demons reside. Should you come up on the wall, near the Breach, in the early hours of the morning, you can actually see the entrance. Are you alright?"
My skin was actually sizzling now, blisters started appearing on the surface. "Uhhh... I lost all my gold during the attack, and now it's probably dust on the wind. Damn... this Heat is really getting to me..." "This gold, you mean?" Alabastor gave me collected coins, still attached to the adhesive makeshift tape. "How?!" "Sir Tiarlin have picked them up," mage smiled. "It was reckless but attentive, I would be sure to inform His Majesty of his exceptional talents. Although I'm sure he already knows."
I quickly pressed them against my skin and the calmness washed over me like a gentle breeze. Seeing this, Alabastor pulled a strange leather belt out of his Storage and quickly slotted all the coins into it, then he slung it over my chest like an ammo belt.
"Woah... I could've used that before! What is that?" "It's made to hold magic crystals or potions, strange that you've never had used it before. But, then again, you seem to lack some other common knowledge as well. Almost as if... something kept you distracted."
I facepalmed, but as I tried to find words, Radius appeared, dragging something behind him. "I found something on the edge of the forest, looks like a dump of unwanted stuff. There were demon footprints all over the place. This thing was the only thing intact," he called out. "Oh and... Thanks for the save, Hero. I owe you one. Those demon bitches pack a punch, my head is still ringing like a bell."
"Radius, next time you decide to stick your neck out like that - guiding us and all (thanks for that by the way) maybe you should go and spend your bells somewhere first. Your reaction to those bitches was a bit... strong," I noted, glad to divert mage's attention. "If you know what I mean." "Hehe, sorry about that..." "Hmm... this is... the Aggregator," Alabastor noted. "This should be inside the chief's house, not thrown out somewhere in the forest." "What does it do?" "The Aggregator serves as the core of magic barrier that surrounds the village, it is connected to special channeling bricks in the wall that serve as the anchors. As long as Aggregator is intact, the barrier is active, reflecting any magic sent at it, keeping demons at bay. As magic energy is channeled through the bricks, they maintain hardness of unprecedented scale, spreading to surrounding walls, making sure demons can't break through the walls via physical attacks," mage explained.
"This looks... very simple but sturdy," I noted. "Looks mass-produced." "You are correct. These were handed out to future village chiefs, they meant to protect it so that it can protect their home in return. Speaking of which, I suggest we either continue our journey or return to Kestrel. You look like you need some rest after this battle."
"Radius, how many villages are left on this side?"
"Three, they're pretty close to each other. I just hope we won't run into more demons..."
Honestly, at this point, I was ready to clock out, curl up inside a sleeping bag, lament how cold and cruel it is without my mates and fall asleep. With or without, quietly sobbing into my hands from crept up loneliness. So far, there were no notable results of our journey, every single village was destroyed. And yet...
"I feel like we NEED to keep going, I'm sorry if that..."
"Perhaps your Insight is driving you, I will trust that," Alabastor noted, he didn't look tired.
"I mean, it's only three, right? Let's keep going," Radius sighed.
Tia nodded, but I've noticed that he looked shaken. I gave him a hug, feeling his body trembling a little.
"Let's go."
The first village was mostly intact, save for the chief's house. Aggregator was broken to pieces, part of the wall collapsed. Examining those channel bricks made me pause - they really weren't stones, but Tia's village had stones! I couldn't recall any special visible barrier, either.
"Alabastor, where do these... bricks come from?"
"They are produced from the material found here, in the jungle. Strong but flexible. After being treated with special solution it would temporarily become malleable, then it would be cut into bricks and fitted into the wall."
When I heard this, something clicked in my head, like a puzzle piece slotted into place. I quickly tore the brick out and held it in my hand. Somewhere, from the depths of my twisted mind, resurfaced an old and weird phrase.
"A hyuck - it's mountain dilk!" I uttered. "Well, demonic jungle dilk anyway."
This was the silk produced by that demon beast worm! Which meant some lack of communication between whoever is making this and mages in Kestrel. They didn't recognize it. I was getting antsy, because the strange feeling I've had the whole time had only gotten stronger. There were two more villages this way, once we cleared those we could return, and boy did we need to. Radius was barely holding his eyes open, so have I. I wasn't tired physically, but letting loose with Dragon Spirit, exhausted me mentally. I wanted food for both body and soul, some TLC from my mates, some self-digging. But my mind cleared when we reached the next village, because of what we found.

2023.06.09 14:05 CIAHerpes I was raised in a secret religion. Our members have learned to travel between dimensions (part 1)

I always knew my family was involved in some strange things. We never celebrated Christmas, Easter, or even Festivus. No, our main holiday was the Overtide on the first full moon after the summer solstice. As my parents constantly drilled into my head, we were Reepiners, the few remaining mystics of an ancient path. The Reepiners devoted their lives to travel. We explored other worlds, other universes even. Many of us died on the way, or sometimes, travelers from our spiritual path would come back totally insane and rambling. Some had even clawed their own eyes out, as if trying to stop the horrors they were seeing.
My father had no real power in the Reepiners, but he was one of the most accomplished travelers in the world. The young male children of the leaders would often accompany my father out to the woods and ancient cave systems near our house where he would show them unimaginable things. One of the young trainees, a brash young man who couldn’t have been older than seventeen, came back with totally white hair after a single night in the caves with my father. When I asked my dad what happened, he simply gave me a sly smile and walked away.
On my own seventeenth birthday, which took place a few years ago, I was to follow my father out into the forest before sunset. We would be heading to Hollowhead Cave, a ten-mile hike from the parking area. My father found the dirt road, pulling over on a slight turnaround. The nearest neighbor was miles down the road. We took no cell phones or supplies with us. We didn’t have so much as a knife.
We had been hiking for hours. I could feel blisters starting to form on my feet, and trickles of sweat rolled down from my hairline. The insects buzzed and chirped in the ferns and trees surrounding us, and a cloud of gnats followed us everywhere we went. There was a slight smell of flowers in the air mixed with pines. Other than the insects, it was a beautiful and peaceful forest. Finally, my father broke the long silence.
“Are you scared?” my father asked. I looked over at him. His strange, gray eyes were watching me, studying me. They seemed to snap and sizzle with inner energy. My father looked younger than his age, sturdy and well-built. Muscles grown over a lifetime of work filled out his clothes. Even though he was in his fifties, he had almost no wrinkles on his face and few white hairs.
Those are eyes that have seen beyond, I thought to myself. Those are eyes that have seen other worlds. The light that seems to shine from them must be holy. It must be the light of a thousand other universes.
“Does traveling really bring enlightenment, Pa?” I said. He shrugged, looking forward again.
“It may, or it may not. Enlightenment is already here at every moment, just like the same deathless mind is always present in every universe, or the same eternal soul is present in all the seconds of your life. Traveling to other spaces may help you see how this eternal consciousness is the same in every universe, how that endless mind stretches everywhere. It is more of a deepening awareness that you get from travel, one that brings enough wisdom to see the eternal is already here. But you didn’t answer my question,” my father said.
“Yes,” I said, “I’m afraid.”
***
It was nearly dark when we got to the cave. My father had been quiet most of the way. Now as he knelt in front of me, I saw what looked like a hand mirror in his back pocket, rolled up in cloth.
“What’s that in your pocket?” I asked.
“I always hold the black mirror,” he said. “We use it for training the young, opening them up to the idea of traveling, showing them a little of what is out there waiting for those with courage and fanaticism on their side.” The cave was cool and refreshing. Torches had been put out all along the walls, though I don’t know when they were lit. I heard what sounded like a babbling stream echoing up through the rocky chambers, and I smelled far-off water mixing with the smoke of the torches.
“What about the red mirror?” I whispered. I had heard rumors about it, but they were vague and contradictory.
“The red mirror? We don’t generally speak of it. High Priest Arkovitch personally attends to it most of the year. He tries to make it sleep. He tells me that prayer and meditation seem to soothe it. But sometimes it wakes up. I’ll tell you a story while we walk. It’ll make the time pass faster.” His voice seemed to crack slightly at this. His face looked grimmer and thinner in the flickering light. He looked at me with his strange, gray eyes, and in them, I saw the traveler my father truly was. He had an iron core that was so fearless, it almost seemed mad. He gave a nearly inaudible sigh, then he started the story.
“High Priest Arkovitch was given the three mirrors in a somewhat strange way. He was on a meditative retreat, sleeping outside, drinking from the streams, eating ferns and mushrooms and whatever else he could scrounge. After the first day, he woke up to a pile of dead squirrels next to his head. Their necks were all snapped, and they were stacked in a little pyramid.
“The second night, he tried to stay up, but after hours of standing guard, he lost the battle. He says he fell asleep with his back against a tree. When he awoke, he found a pile of hundreds of shoes surrounding him. He says that when he left the spot to forage or drink, these piles were taken away in the blink of an eye. It was as if they hadn’t been there at all. And there was no sign of anyone in the forest. He was out about a dozen miles from the road, far down a winding deer trail. He wasn’t going to be spooked by these childish pranks, he told me. He stayed another night.
“This time, he awoke to find a black box next to him. He opened it, expecting an animal’s head or some other rubbish, but instead, he found these three strange mirrors. He touched them all in turn, the white, the red and the black, and then he pulled them out. He looked into the red. The flat, polished stone on both sides sure made a poor mirror, he told me. In fact, all three of them were almost totally useless. They were clearly hand mirrors, of that he was certain, but who would put just a slightly reflective stone inscribed with strange runes in place of the actual mirror glass? And then his mind made a connection. He had heard of shamans doing similar things to this, making special hand mirrors for rites involving psychedelic drugs or mystical experiences, such as the shamans in Africa with their iboga vine.
“As he looked into it, though, he said the strange runes seemed to start glowing. They sent out red light that pierced straight into his head. He said he tried closing his eyes, but even with them fully shut, all he could see was swirling tunnels of red light. And then he was gone.
“When we travel, son, you know we hear the ringing. Any time you cross universes, all you can hear is that incessant, high-pitched sound which seems to vibrate your teeth and makes your eyes water.” I nodded. I had done some astral projection and lucid dreaming, both of which were considered vastly inferior by the Reepiners, like toys for children to play with. The most advanced in our religion always traveled bodily. It was considered the way to Liberation. Enlightenment itself was the goal, and seeing the true nature of all things by travel was the principal path. But some of the older members of our religion had told me that it was also terrifying, especially since anyone who traveled bodily could die if something in these strange, alien worlds attacked them.
“Arkovitch says the ringing was the most intense he had ever heard. He said he thought his head would split open. The red light still blinded him, but he felt himself floating. And then he felt the light receding and opened his eyes. The ringing in his ears gradually faded as he looked around, realizing he was in a strange jungle, still holding the red mirror in one hand. But the runes had stopped glowing and faded back into the stone, and the mirror again just looked like a useless decoration.
“He says the trees of the jungle stretched hundreds of feet above him with slippery, yellow trunks and thin branches periodically reaching out. Ferns taller than a man surrounded him. He could barely see over the thick vegetation. There were no cries of birds, no insects, no animals or any kind he could see. And then he heard a rustling, just a slight movement. Turning, he saw a blood-red shape duck into the ferns.
“Arkovitch began to run. He ran for his life. He didn’t know what kind of world he was, but he knew when he was being stalked. He heard more of those things, saw glimpses of that bright red hide they had. Then one jumped directly in front of him.
“It stood over ten feet tall, he said, with dozens of black eyes on stalks rising from the top of its thin, oval head. Its legs were sleek and reptilian, like the legs of a velociraptor, and long arms with knife-like claws at the end. It opened its mouth wide, showing rows of parallel serrated teeth, and from a bulging orange sac in the back of its throat, it spit at him. Sticky white webs shot out and wrapped around his legs before he even knew what was happening. And then he heard dozens more of those things closing in all around him, ready to begin shredding his body. These were clearly the apex predators. He was stupid for not realizing why there were no animal sounds now, he said. Likely the life in the area had gone silent and moved on when they realized a herd of those things were in the area.
“As the nearest one bent down, hissing, silver streams of saliva running down its pointed chin, Arkovitch picked up the red mirror. Instinctively, he traced his fingers along the runes, hoping for any sign of life from it. At once, it lit up, blinding him with red light, and he felt himself floating again, the ringing in his ears. He awoke at his house, nearly twenty miles away from where he had started just minutes earlier, still wrapped in webs.” My father stopped in front of me. We had just come to a sharp turn in the cave, the rocks jutting out on both sides and making it thin and claustrophobic. I had to turn my body to slide through. I saw my father having more trouble with his larger frame, but eventually he pushed himself through, sweating and slightly scraped up.
“Wow,” I said. “Where do you think he went?” My father shrugged.
“Son, the mirrors can send you anywhere at any time, but the red mirror in particular tends to send travelers to the worst places, where predators or demons are waiting. Other times, people have found themselves on nearly dead planets where strange robed beings floated in the mists. Arkovitch’s son used the red mirror, and he never came back at all. The mirror just showed back up in Arkovitch’s office after his son had been missing for three days. We don’t know where they went, and we don’t want more people being lost in such a way.
“And now, we are here,” my father finished saying. I looked around, frowning. It looked like just another part of the cave to me. And then, I realized I did see something. Out of the corner of my eye, one of the walls of the cave seemed to shimmer and glow. When I got close to it and touched it, it felt warm, too- much warmer than the other stone walls of the cave. It was only a space about the size of a door.
“Yes, my son,” my father said, “that is the gateway where we will send you through. Your test of manhood will be to see where the black mirror takes you.”
“If the red mirror took Arkovitch without any door, why do we need this one?” I asked. My father leaned in close.
“So that you don’t come back twenty miles away, at the bottom of a lake, or two thousand miles away at the bottom of some volcano,” he said. My heart was beating fast, and my stomach started to hurt. I was having second thoughts.
“OK, let’s do this,” I said. “Let’s see where the mirror takes me.” He nodded and took out the supplies for the ritual. With a prayer to the eternal mind, he handed me the mirror.
It felt much heavier than it looked. Moreover, it was as cold as death. As soon as I touched it, the runes lit up, blinding me. Pure white light shot out of them, and the shimmering of the doorway was so intense now that I saw sparks and electricity. And then, the wall opened.
Every hair was standing up as I watched it happen, as if I were underneath a forming lightning bolt. All I could hear was buzzing. Holding the mirror tightly, I walked forward, through the doorway. Instantly, everything went black and the buzzing and electricity stopped.
I opened my eyes in a strange place. The sun was warm, and the wind blew so fiercely that during the strongest gusts, I stumbled and feared I may lose my footing. Looking around, I saw mountains with iron and other metals peeking out, forming sharp, irregular blocks at the bottom. The tops disappeared under thick, stratified yellow clouds that blocked out the sky. Even the sun here was no more than a hazy, orange silhouette in the impenetrable cloud layer.
I looked around, unsure of where to go. I could barely see any signs of life on this planet, besides some strange, brown moss growing on the bases of the mountains. I couldn’t ask my dad or the mirror for help. But then, I heard something. At first, I thought it was part of the wind. But I quickly realized that it sounded more like gurgling and screaming. I realized with horror that it was in English.
“Help…” the voice said. “Please, for the love of God, help me before it comes back.” I followed the voice around some rocks standing twenty feet high and found a man on the ground- prostrate, bloody and missing a leg. He raised his head at my appearance and I realized I knew who this was. It was High Priest Arkovitch’s son, the one who had gone missing a while back. It was almost hard to recognize him with stringy hair, bloody scraped skin and nearly all of his clothes torn or missing, but I could still see it in the eyes and construction of the face.
“It’s OK,” I said, leaning down. “I’ll get you out. It’s going to be OK.”
“No,” he said. “It’s coming back. We have to go now…” He looked behind me, and his eyes widened. “Oh God, it’s too late.” Without any weapon or even an idea where I was, I turned to look at what horrors this world held- the same ones that presumably had torn off or even eaten this poor man’s leg. As soon as I saw it, I began to scream.

2023.06.09 14:04 ColBlackhawk WWI Story (PART 1) Journey to the Frontline

My great-grandfather, Alexander Houck Mosier, served in WWI with the 79th Division during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which took place from September 26, 1918, to November 11th, 1918. This is his story.
I have in my possession the transcription of a diary he wrote while deployed. A major help in writing this story is the book History of the Seventy-Ninth Division A.E.F. during the World War: 1917-1919, published in 1922. The book was extremely helpful, as Alexander had trouble spelling the French names. Reading along helped me to narrow down the towns he traveled through. I also have created a google map (https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1Q49-SJTkOTM5jPSWg-qH7cAeFjOtm68&usp=drive_link) , which plots where I think he was. Especially in later parts where his division is in combat, the pins mark the general area. The map covers his whole diary, so minor spoilers for where he traveled.
In this story, I have picked specific entries from his diary, marked in bold, to tell the story, with my comments/ summary along with quotes from the book, in italics. There are entries for each day, but some are removed to shorten the length of the story.
Alexander Houck Mosier was born on May 25, 1894, in Maryland. When he was drafted, he was a laborer in a flour mill with an 8th grade education. He was drafted at the age of 23 and was sent to Camp Meade in 1917 as part of the 79th Division, 313th Infantry, Company D.
Major General Joseph A. Kuhn oversaw the division, with Colonel Claude B. Sweezey commanding the 313th infantry. The men of the 79th division were drawn from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. A good example of the demographic makeup of the division is given in the form of the 310th Field Artillery: “In this one regiment there were fifteen nationalities, American, Russian, Italian, Polish, Austrian, Jewish, Swiss, English, Lithuanian, Greek, Bohemian, French, Irish, Romanian, and even German. There were four different religious beliefs, Protestant, Catholic, Hebrew and Greek Catholic, while twenty-five men of the regiment asserted they had no religious adherence. As to educational attainments, but fifty men in the regiment had ever attended college, while 114 had no education of any sort. Others had been to elementary, grammar and high schools.”
By September 30th, all the men had arrived at Camp Meade and were ready for training. The training lasted from October 1st, 1917, to July 5th, 1918. On July 5th, the division departed for Hoboken.
Saturday, 6 July: Reached Jersey City about 4 AM. Taken ferry across to Hoboken, on ferry boat. Loan aboard U.S.S. Leviathan. Went on Guard at 6 PM.
U.S.S. Leviathan was formerly the German Liner Vaterland, seized along with the entire U.S. branch of the Hamburg American Line when war was declared. The ship was originally designed to carry 4,500 passengers but by the time Alexander boarded, it had been upgraded to 14,000.
Monday, 15 July – Arrived at Brest about 2:30 PM. Stayed aboard ship all night. Up all night, band playing.
Tuesday, 16 July- Left boat and landed at Brest, walking 6 miles. Arrived at rest camp about 12 AM. Weather was cloudy and rainy. Went in a field of weed. Work hard to get tent up in rain.
Thursday, 18 July- Left camp about 2 AM. Walked 6 miles. Boarded cars 42 men to a car. Passed through Lerody, Landerneaux. Bremmes a very nice town. Munitions Camp located.
An excerpt on what the box cars were like: “Box cars are usually provided for the accommodation of the troops. They hold from 3'-2 to 40 men. Sometimes seats are provided. Straw will be provided whenever practicable to make the men as comfortable as possible when traveling in cold weather. Space at each end of the car should be left clear for rifles, rations and accoutrements; the rifles being secured by an improvised rack made with screw rings and a strap or sling.”
Friday, 19 July – Still traveling. Passed Angers, Tours, Vierson (Vierzon) large R.R. Centre. People of better classed. Nice homes.
Saturday, 20 July – Still on board train without much comfort eating or sleeping. Passed Dijon. Mostly wheat and potatoes grown. Seen droves of cattle 1500. Several camps, some been overseas 8 months.
Sunday, 21 July- Arrived about 6 AM. After being on train about 80 hours, walked 4 miles and secured quarters. 3rd floor 18 men in 1 room very good after being on train. Town named Blissey sa Pierre. Rained all day.
Thursday, 25 July- Hiked 2 hours with heavy packs and then drilled till noon. Packed up and left. Passed through Chatillon SuSeine. Reached Longeaux (Longeau) about 1 o’clock and stayed till morning.
Friday, 26 July- Left Longeaux (Longeau) about 11 AM. Traveled in trucks about 2 PM. Billeted again not very good. Town prices very high. Champlittle (Champlitte) name of town.
Champlitte was the site of the Tenth Training Area, where the division was to spend all of August in intensive combat training. This area had not been touched by the war. A description of the area: “It was picturesque from one end of the training area to the other, with the peasants always ready to extend a hearty greeting. Men of the Ammunition Train tell of a large sign displayed on the town hall, or hotel de ville of one of the places they entered, bearing the inscription, “Welcome to our American Friends,” and of the formal address of welcome delivered by the town’s patriarch, while the children and girls threw flowers to the men standing in the ranks. There was, however, little to do in the area by way of recreation. At the end of a hard day’s work the sole amusements would be a stroll through quaint village streets, a halting conversation with a native, or a glass of light wine sipped in a sidewalk cafe. Regulations forbidding the sale of strong liquors were enforced by the military authorities and were well observed on the part of the French population.”
From July 26 to September 8th, Alexander’s entries are sometimes short. The following is a selection of that time.
Saturday – 3 August – Short drill and lecture of care of feet. Taking automatic rifle apart with eyes tied shut with a handkerchief. Taking all apart with eyes tight shut, putting together the same way. Inspected by Lt. Townsend. Only 1 pin missed but would not stop from shooting.
Thursday – 8 August- Shooting on rifle range with automatic rifle. Made a good score. 23 five shots.
Thursday – 15 August – Drilled in morning and went to gas house and tested our gas mask. Took part of positions in front line trenches in honor of some Catholic festival. Nearly all people turned out.
Friday- 23 August- Went on 6 hour hike about 16 miles. In evening foot inspection. Tired and hungry and received pay. Also emergency rations. Still warm and cloudy and very cold at night.
Saturday – 31 August – Drilled and went through the manual of arms. Drilled with gas mask on for 1 hour. Pretty hard to get on in six seconds.
Monday – 2 September – General inspection of equipment. All taking a bath. One man drowned name Raspa. I ran for a pole up to town about 500 yards.
DROWNED? Taking a bath? What an awful way to go.
Sunday – 8 September – Left Campsite. Walked 6 Miles to Oyrios. (Oyreires) No rest men drop out about 11 AM. Boarded train with 2 days of rations at 5:45 PM. 40 men to a car, passed backed to Champlatde Maatz Chaumorunt (no idea).
Monday, 9 September – Passed Revigny Barekduc (Bar-le-duc?), reached Longville and unloaded. 9:30 AM went to town and stayed up in a hay loft.
Tuesday, 10 September – Rainy, no drill. More troops passing, auto trucks passing through, No retreat.
Thursday, 12 September – Cloudy and rainy. Inspection of everything, gun and clothes. Detail unloading cars, hay, and goats.

2023.06.09 13:11 chaim770 Anybody else just bored of it by now?

The most recent episode its 20 minutes in and theyre still going on about the deer carcass from last week, or was it two weeks ago or was it a year ago (Depending on when the show was aired/events happened).
Then they are going on and on about the blue light again.
Literally next to nothing about digging the mesa.
Then when they finally talk about drilling the mesa, they say well lets go back to command base and have a MEETING about doing that.
Its like they are dragging everything out to be as long drawn as possible to spread this over multiple seasons.
Every episode for the last three episodes has just been recaps of the previous episodes.
Oh, and does travis really need every 30 seconds to speak and rephrase about what has just been said?! really?
I love the show and i gave it the benefit of the doubt the first seasons, even the begining of this season, but the last three episodes take clutching at straws to a whole new level, the show has gone from 80 per cent filler to just 100 per cent filler now. I am skipping through the show now, not watching it excitedly like i did at the begining of this season, its just boring repetative nothing happening..

2023.06.09 12:53 Competitive_Text1914 Hells Kitchen 6th Place Season: Episode 13

Chef Gordon Ramsay welcomed his final 7 Chefs back to Hells Kitchen and said he was very proud of them for reaching this stage and that today they would be fighting for black jackets! However, he said he only had 5 to give out and with 7 Chefs remaining that meant there would be 2 eliminations. Kanae said this something she’d been waiting for for years after feeling like she was robbed at missing out on Season 18 and Van said he didn’t think he’d struggle as he’d been the best at challenges all season so he was confident at being in the top 5. Ramsay said that the first challenge would involve a Chef getting a box which had a different cuisine inside and that every Chef would have to cook a dish from that country. First up was Giovanni who had to cook with Chinese cuisine and his seabass was overcooked so Ramsay said there would definitely be at least 2 bitter dishes and Giovanni realise he’d have to do another round. Next up was Elizabeth with her Mexican pork dish which Ramsay enjoyed except the flavours were too mixed and Tara was next with her Thai flank steak which Ramsay liked except the vegetables needed more seasoning. Van’s French inspired halibut was next which Ramsay loved except he wanted more on the plate and Nikki was next with Japanese inspired tuna which Ramsay also loved and said the dishes were hotting up. Kanae was next with her Spanish inspired shrimp and chicken dish which also got great reviews and with Ed’s Indian cod also getting great reviews, it was between those 4 who would receive the first black jackets. After a pause, Ramsay announced that VAN had received the first black jacket and Van was ecstatic, saying nothing was stopping him winning Hells Kitchen on his 3rd try. Ramsay said the 2nd black jacket was between Kanae and Nikki but said that KANAE had the stronger dish and Kanae said she had killed it today and couldn’t wait to wear a black jacket.
While Van and Kanae chilled in the lounge, Ramsay said the next challenge would see each Chef grab ingredients from under a dome with a protein each and Nikki said she could not fail this time round after coming so close in Season 19 and Tara also had the same feeling, saying she was going to throw people out the way to get the right ingredients. First up was Elizabeth with her chicken dish and Ramsay enjoyed it other under-seasoned eggplant and Ed’s lobster was up next which was also enjoyed other than slightly too much garlic. Giovanni’s NY strip was alot better received than his first dish other than too much polenta and Tara’s salmon was criticised for having undercooked potatoes so Tara realised she was going to have to fight in the last round. Nikki’s veal was last up and Ramsay said he couldn’t find a single issue with the dish and put NIKKI through to the lounge next and Nikki said this was the best feeling after just missing out in Season 19. Ramsay said there was one more place in the lounge before the final challenge and he gave it to GIOVANNI for his superb dish and Giovanni said he could not believe he’d done it and dived into the lounge to celebrate. Van was happy to see Giovanni in black jackets and Kanae said Nikki had deserved it for her performance the whole season.
There was one last place left in the lounge and Kanae said she hoped it would be Ed while Giovanni was hoping Ed wouldn’t come back as he saw him as competition. Ed said it was extremely stressful to be left with only a 1 out of 3 chance of winning and Elizabeth felt like her chances were slipping away. Ramsay announced that the last challenge would be rolling dice for ingredients but Ramsay rolled first and landed on S, declaring Sturgeon as the protein they would be cooking and Tara was dreading this having not much experience with sturgeon. Tara was up first with her sturgeon dish and Ramsay said it was a great dish with no issues and Ed was up next, and his dish was also praised as Ramsay said it this was going to be a tough decision. Elizabeth was up last and despite Ramsay praising the sauce, he said the sturgeon was sadly overcooked so eliminated ELIZABETH in 7th place, saying she had done so well to reach this far but sadly fell at the last hurdle. Ramsay then said he wasn’t done and got the 4 chefs in the lounge to decide who had the best dish between Tara and Ed, and that he wouldn’t say who’s dish it was. Van tasted first and voted for Ed but Kanae tied it up by voting for Tara’s dish. Nikki and Giovanni voted for ED though which saw him receive the last black jacket and he said that was far too close for comfort but felt amazing and TARA was eliminated from Hells Kitchen, and Ramsay told her to not stop her dream but that the other Chefs had spoken.

2023.06.09 12:51 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 23: KING BUFFALO

So when you think of cities with high culture and vibrant music scenes on the east coast, what springs to mind? Obviously New York. Thanks to Drake, we all know about the growing music scene in Toronto. You prahbahbly musta tawt a Bawstan tew. Maybe Montreal or Philadelphia or even Baltimore crossed your mind.
Hah. Baltimore.
Time to check your cultural bias, pal. You passed over a quiet little city on the south shore of Lake Ontario, nestled in the Genesee River valley. It has a history as a hotbed of Abolitionism and Women’s Rights. It is the home of Eastman Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, Western Union, Ragu and other innovative companies. It has a lively music scene, great nightclubs, world-renowned universities, thriving museums, arts & culture festivals, and live theatre. It is a true cultural gem that many folks overlook.
Yep. You bet your ass I am talking about Rochester, New York.
Since we know that Stoner Rock can come from anywhere, it should be no surprise that Rochester has produced one of the leading bands in this genre. This week we are going to check out a band you are going to want to listen to. If you know them, you love them. If you haven’t heard of them, you are going to thank me.
This week’s band is KING BUFFALO.
About Them
Hold on a sec. King Buffalo? Not King Rochester?
To be fair, King Rochester sounds like the villain in a Disney movie. Kinda hard to imagine that on a T-Shirt. King New York sounds like a particularly obnoxious Yankees fan (and yeah, finding a Yankees fan that isn’t obnoxious is a tough go). King Albany sounds like a car made by Kia.
But King Buffalo? That just works.
Our heroes didn’t start out together. King Buffalo were made up of members of two other Rochester area bands.
Randall Coon and Scott Donaldson were playing together in Velvet Elvis. That five piece band played heavy rock with space-based themes in the early 2010’s. Sean McVay and Dan Reynolds were in another band called Abandoned Buildings Club (side note: kinda neat that their initials were ABC), who had a pure psychedelic rock vibe. When both VE and ABC appeared to be having limited success, the four musicians decided to merge their talents into one band. Coon had handled vocals and guitar in Velvet Elvis and Donaldson had been rock solid on drums. McVay had done vocals and guitar in Abandoned Buildings Club and Reynolds had anchored the sound with his bass. All the pieces were there for a classic Beatles-esque lineup.
So out of the wreckage of ABC and VE, KB arose. The four members gelled so well that they were able to record their first demo - aptly titled Demo - in just two days. Their sound was immediately compared to tourmates and close friends All Them Witches. But where ATW were bluesy and sludgy, King Buffalo had produced songs full of space. Oh, there were heavy riffs for sure - but there were passages of music that were contrastingly lighter and further apart. The best example of these contrasts can be found in the more than 11 minutes of Providence Eye. The first six and a half minutes come at you at a lulling pace, enveloping you in the moment. You get swept up in the rolling riffs. But then the drop happens and you suddenly realize the song has been building to this peak. The tempo picks up and you ride a relentless rollercoaster until you hit the Black Sabbath-inspired outro, which takes you home. It is an emotional experience. The two other tracks - In Dim Light and Pocket Full of Knife are smaller essays on the same theme.
It was clear right from Demo that King Buffalo had some serious talent. But if you have listened to the band you will notice that one thing is starkly different on Demo than from any of their other releases: the vocals. Randall Coon was the lead vocalist on these recordings. If you play them up against anything since by the band they stand out. Our very own QotSA may have successfully had multiple vocalists on multiple tunes, but King Buffalo was destined to have Sean McVay take over the mic. Shortly after 2013’s Demo, Coon left the band to do a solo project called Skunk Hawk.
King Buffalo stood at a crossroads: did they look to replace Coon, or should they carry on as a Power Trio? The choice for them was obvious. McVay, Reynolds and Donaldson knew that they had fantastic potential together. They decided they didn't need anyone else.
Side note: Regular readers of these write ups know that All Them Witches just went through this exact crisis in 2019. What I didn’t share then is that ATW are close friends with KB. I would not be surprised to learn that ATW had some serious conversations about their lineup with the boys from KB before they, too, decided last year to pare down to just three members.
To re-christen their new lineup, in 2015 King Buffalo went in on a split EP with Swedish band Lé Betre (I mean, hooking up with a Swedish partner is a dream of mine, so I see the appeal.) They re-recorded their standout tune Providence Eye with McVay on vocals, as well as two new tracks - Like a Cadillac and New Time. New Time opens their side of the EP with an infectious, descending riff that hooks you immediately. It is clear from the lyrics - No wasting around, it’s a new time - that they had moved on from Coon. Like a Cadillac follows up and is a three and a half minute jam that leaves you wanting more. The re-recorded version of Providence Eye closes out their side of the split EP and leaves no doubt that they are in charge. It is a tighter, heavier version, and the amazing outro is so low down that it will make you want to rob your own house.
With their lineup now set, it was time to put together enough music to tour on. In 2016, King Buffalo released Orion. Here you can witness the melding of their influences into something majestic and fantastic, and it is here that they really develop their signature style.
To explain this style, you need to understand basic song structure.
Most pop songs tend to go verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus - chorus. Sure, you could add in a solo for the bridge, or a detailed intro or outro, or another verse - but this is a tried and true formula. Some variation of this dominates the pop charts to this day.
Not with King Buffalo songs. These guys are the masters of the drop, and you hear it in most of their tunes. QotSA fans are no strangers to that long build and release; it is an integral part of tunes like The Evil Has Landed, God is in the Radio, Song For The Dead, and I Appear Missing. One of the sickest drops ever recorded happens in the middle of the Them Crooked Vultures tune No One Loves Me & Neither Do I. It is where the music turns around, and a new riff takes over, often along with a pace change. It is then that you realize that the song has built to this climactic moment, and you are engulfed by the music.
King Buffalo does this better than anyone else, and you hear it clearly articulated, again and again, on the album Orion.
Take the song Kerosene for example.
A rolling bass riff from Reynolds establishes the song right out of the gate. Donaldson produces punchy drum beats with cymbal crashes at the end of each phrase. McVay’s slide guitar rounds out the intro. McVay’s vocals - very Ozzy like, if Ozzy had any semblance of self-control - frame the first verse, which ends in a fuzzy, heavy riff with crashing cymbals. This same pattern is repeated a second time and the drop is teased at just past three minutes in, but does not happen quite yet. The listener’s anticipation builds as the airy, soaring solo from McVay calls out in contrast to the rolling bass. After the guitar solo bridge, the band goes right back into the chorus. But then it happens: THE DROP. Just past 5 minutes in, the song takes a complete and abrupt turn for a totally different riff that is at the same time heavier and brand new, and yet has been there all the while.
What King Buffalo does brilliantly is subvert your musical expectations.
The standard structure is V-C-V-C-B-C-C.
Kerosene is V-C-V-C-B-C-DROP-OUTRO. Just when you subliminally expect something the same, you get something different.
The entire album is like that. Orion hardly sounds like a debut. It is a mature and deliberate soundscape built by talented musicians who are making significant choices about their art. Songs like Drinking From The River Rising open with an expansive and elastic topography, but drill down to the molten lava of heavy riffs and distorted fuzz. Sleeps On A Vine begins with one of the most zen riffs you’ve ever heard and ends in a tumultuous and heavy sonic assault that is pure controlled chaos. Every song on the album is a study in contrasts that leaves you with auditory whiplash and a burning desire for more.
They are that good.
King Buffalo were able to tour on their new material, and did so extensively. They played clubs and larger venues, often with friends and fellow Stoner Rockers All Them Witches and other bands like The Sword and Elder. In 2017, the released the EP Repeater as a follow up. It is just three songs (The vinyl ad reads, All songs on one side! No need to flip!) but it is a heck of a musical journey. The title track off the EP is 13+ minutes long and is one huge build. When the fuzz finally drops after almost 8 minutes, it is a true cathartic moment. It sneaks up on you, and is so welcome when it hits - especially after McVay’s repetition that “Every Day is the Same* - that you intrinsically understand how great it is when things finally change for the better. Too Little Too Late is an instrumental tune that is both enveloping and expansive. It is a terrific bridge to the final track, Centurion, which is an unbelievable groove. Centurion has three minutes of set up leading to an unreal fuzzy drop that is so dirty it will get you evicted from your apartment.
The influence of their touring with All Them Witches can also be seen on their next full length release, 2018’s Longing To Be The Mountain. Ben McLeod from ATW produced the album. ATW, The Sword and Elder are all thanked in the liner notes. The album picks up right where Repeater leaves off, with KB experimenting with long form songs like Morning Song and the title track, and shorter jams like Sun Shivers, Cosmonaut, and Quickening. Reynolds and McVay pepper the songs with synthesizer sounds that add colour and texture to the overall compositions. Donaldson drums with impeccable precision to provide each song with a safe mooring to return to, driving the guitars forward at the same time as he holds the rhythm in check. This is most clearly evident in Eye Of The Storm. The result is a rich tapestry of expansive and flowing music full of heavy jams and storytelling that will leave the listener wanting more. Their signature build-to-sonic-explosion style does not let fans down.
The success of Longing To Be The Mountain allowed for extensive touring across North America and Europe. It also led to appearances at bigger gigs, like at Rockpalast and the Stoned & Dusted desert rock event in 2019. Anyone that has seen any of their live work knows that King Buffalo are simply hypnotizing on stage. Reynolds’ bass work is reminiscent of Geddy Lee with his complex and flowing style. Donaldson brings controlled power to the drum kit, and is ready to cut loose when the drop comes. And McVay has become a true front man, comfortable with the lead voice on guitar and the microphone.
Their next release, Dead Star, dropped in 2020 and generated all kinds of buzz in the Stoner Rock scene. Of course, the tour planned to support it got axed when the entire world went into lockdown. But the (short album? EP?) is simply fantastic. Red Star Pt. 1 & 2 continues their long form examination and has everything you’d expect from them. Echo of A Waning Star is a lament of just over 3 minutes that is near-perfect. Ecliptic sounds like the soundtrack to a John Carpenter movie and is a complete jam with serious cool 1980’s vibes. Dead Star, the title track, is almost Radiohead-esque in its evocative and regretful take on death and decay.
But the standout track has to be Eta Carinae, which has one of the greatest musical drops and turn-arounds you will ever hear. The entire song pivots just past four minutes in and becomes a 70’s anthem worthy of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. If you listen to no other tune here today, you have to check it out. It will absolutely get stuck in your head.
The band dropped their first live record, Live At Freak Valley, in 2020. This is a really nice retrospective/greatest hits album kinda deal. What stands out is just how fucking tight the band is live. With some bands, live versions veer wildly from the recorded ones - and not at all in a good way. This record is the opposite. You can clearly hear on Orion and Kerosene that KB are just that good live.
In the wake of the global pandemic, King Buffalo decided to musically capture the moment in time. They decided to release a trifecta of albums. 2021 saw them drop The Burden of Restlessness and then Acheron. The third record in this trio is 2022’s Regenerator. It is really important to consider all three records in this Triptych at the same time, for they are a sonic cycle.
TBOR is a descent into despondency. Acheron is about hitting rock bottom, and being in Hell. Regenerator is about finding a way to claw yourself back into the light. Each album stands on its own, but together they form a sweeping epic journey that we can all relate to.
TBOR is an album where the protagonist gradually loses the will to exist. There is a cry of deep frustration in Burning, a not-so-subtle reference to a plague in Locusts, a study in being confined indoors in Silverfish, and an outright statement that our hero is sinking in Loam. In fact, the lyrics tell us: “Still I press my face into the ground/I’m waiting for the hammer to fall.”
It is not a happy album.
Just when you think things have to get better, we get the 4-track jam of Acheron. In this record, our hero has fallen to his lowest point. He has descended to Hell. The title track - the first one on the album - makes this clear, when it says: “Waking up under the ground/Silver asleep on my tongue.”
Just in case you didn’t get the classic reference, Acheron is the river one must cross in Greek mythology to get to the underworld. Souls going to Hell had coins placed in their mouth to pay Charon, the ferryman, to take them across the river to Hades. So our hero did sink into the Loam in the last album, and finds himself in Hell. This theme is reinforced in Zephyr, who was the Greek God of the West Wind, and Shadows, which references what the Greeks used to call dead spirits - Shades. And just in case you had any doubt, the final track on the album is Cerberus, named after the three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades.
What is even cooler about Acheron is how it was recorded. Instead of a studio, they recorded the album underground in a cave.
Now that is commitment.
The final album in this cycle is 2022’s Regenerator. While the first two records were about descent, despondency, and hitting rock bottom, this record is about regaining hope and optimism, and finding a way to come back. We hear this clearly in the lyrics of the record’s final track, Firmament, which says: “Out of the loam I rise, embraced by the etheThe river below relieves my hands of silver” - clearly calling back to the tracks Loam and Acheron. And in case you didn’t know, in Greek mythology the Firmament means the Sky or the Heavens.
Our hero has left Hell behind, and ascended into Heaven.
References to positive mythology are all over this album, from the album art to the tracks Mercury and Avalon. It is a total jam. But the best song on the album might just be Mammoth. If you don’t like the guitar on this song, you and I can’t be friends.
I got a chance to see KB perform last year when they toured with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. They are fucking tight. They were the opening act, but were the absolute highlight of the show. I want everyone to hear this band because they really are something special.
Go check them out.
Links to QOTSA
We know that QotSA front man Josh Homme and Kyuss invented Stoner Rock in the 1990’s. They were the genre-defining band. King Buffalo (and other bands like All Them Witches) have picked up this proverbial torch and are now bringing the sound to the next generation of fans. King Buffalo drummer Scott Donaldson is known to be a huge QotSA fan. Perhaps he saw them live when they played in Rochester in 2014 in support of ...Like Clockwork.
It is also sometimes easy to forget that Josh was not the only architect of the low desert sound. Original Kyuss Drummer and co-founder Brant Bjork wrote many Kyuss tunes and continues to be a leader in the music scene today. King Buffalo have played with Bjork at festivals three times: Freak Valley Festival, Black Deer Festival and the aforementioned Stoned & Dusted. There is also a planned collaborative project between Bjork and King Buffalo that may be coming our way soon.
The future is bright, my friends.
