2023.06.10 23:48 SubRaven111 I need help regarding my relationship 23&55

Before I get into it, I hope you can upvote and comment so hopefully you guys will help me make up my mind...So here is some info before I get into it,, I 23 male and my partner 55male have been dating for 2 years now, we have had our ups and downs, times when we took breaks etc...and not to forget to mention: 1-we are from a third world country in which homosexuality is a sin and you can even get punished by law! .. 2- my partner is mostly straight! He had been with guys when he was younger, but he described it as just being very young and horny! I'm basically the first guy he has ever dated... despite him almost being straight he started making moves on me as we were just friends before etc.. 3- he had truly fallen in love with a girl 5-6 years ago,he was mad about her and they dated until 4 years ago ,, thats when few months before their wedding he found out she is cheating on him... It made him depressed, lost his job etc... About one year and half afterwards we met and became friends... After 6 months I could tell that he was into me and was obviously flirting with me, It was not long till we started dating... For the past 2 years I have been waiting for him to say 3 simple words... Which is ( I love you)! Even tho I remind him and tell him I love him on daily bases, or sometimes call him just to hear his voice,, I have been trying my absolute best to help and fix the damage she had done to him. I have surely seen improvement but to be honest it's becoming tiring! Constantly and unconditionally showing love and not receiving much in return. Even when I say ( I love you) , he either says thank you or laughs and says (and I hate you) anyhow I understand it's hard for him to say these words after what happened to him and he is just trying to protect himself. But I believe 2 years of constantly being a loving boyfriend is enough for someone to build up the courage to say these 3 simple words and he knows how much it means to me .... And another hard pill to swallow is knowing he how he treated her like a queen and how much he loved her, and how emotionally available he was with her and I don't see 1/10th of that when it comes to me... Keep in mind I'm absolutely in love with and also want the best for him.. with him acting that way I'm starting to believe I'm not the one for him. What should I do? I'm happy to provide more context if needed

2023.06.10 23:48 TheMarcosianOne 20-year experienced residential contruction plumber thinking about getting into framing houses

Hi carpenters! :) I have a question:
I've been working on housing sites for pretty much almost two decades and started getting more interested in house framing design and building structures. I'm not a business owner, just a plumber looking into maybe getting into working for a builder or framing company as a housing construction carpenter. Entry-level obviously.
What recommendations do you have for me as someone who will be viewed as a "beginner"? I know that I can't technically say I have official "carpentry experience" but this is what I do understand so far:
1) As a plumber, I do know where the toilet flange and center of bathtub drains and shower valves have to be installed so that a building contractor doesn't have to deal with plumbers complaining about chopping joists for toilet flanges or cutting down studs and moving them over for shower valves. (hint hint) :)
2) I know the 3-4-5 rule (6-8-10, etc) for checking for square angles of rooms. I know when headers are needed and when cripple studs can be used instead (load bearing vs non-load bearing walls). I also know that wood has to be placed strategically around perimeters of rooms to offer a means of support for drywallers to fasten their drywall afterward.
3) I have looked over the part of the building code here in Ontario dealing with acceptable wood ratings, nail types and sizes and how many have to be used to fasten framing members together. I also am in the process of studying the code for minimum room sizes, ceiling heights and how walls are placed over each other.
4) I know what face-nailing, end-nailing, toe-nailing are, and what nails are better for over screws and vice versa.
5) I own a rafter's square, a 4-foot level, a compressor with a framing nailer and a brad nailer and I know how to use those tools as well as Paslode's nailing guns that use the compressed air charges and rechargeable batteries.
6) I have Working At Heights training as well as WHMIS (hazardous material training). I just don't have any forklift certification, boom truck or scissor lift training. I would have to get those to be taken more seriously, I guess. :)
Is there anything else that I should look into to be taken more seriously as an entry-level framer?
I appreciate any advice you can offer me.

2023.06.10 23:48 stupidMethematician Dear incoming freshman:

I love helping y'all with your schedules. But stop signing up for so many classes!
Taking more than 15 credits in your first semester is probably a BAD IDEA.
Especially if you are taking notoriously difficult classes, i.e. econ 110, chem 105
I graduated high school as valedictorian with a 4.0 gpa and 11 AP classes under my belt. My first semester, I took 16 credits. I didn't have a job. I got a 2.9 GPA that semester and lost my scholarship at the end of the year. Plus I changed my major two years later so I really wasted my time.
You have at least 3-4 years ahead of you. There's no rush! Take 12-14 credits and give yourself time to adjust. Replace a hard class with a lecture series or two. for many freshmen, this will be your first time living away from home, which is a huge adjustment by itself.
Also, IMO, AP classes do not really prepare you for a college class. Most high school teachers don't implement the same structure and format that you will see in a college class. My AP classes gave me false confidence in my college abilities.
Squeezing in 1-2 extra classes is NOT worth starting your college career with a low gpa. Especially if you have a scholarship with gpa requirements! Prioritize that scholarship.
TL;DR: Be humbler than I was, take less than 15 credits, build a solid gpa, give yourself some time to adjust to BYU.

2023.06.10 23:45 tompl14 Need input DIY-ing balcony curtain

I originally thought getting curtains to cover our balcony windows and doors would be a quick solution. I have quickly (and slowly) learned that doing curtains instead of blinds requires a lot of more thought than picking fabrics. I now come to HomeDecorating, a humble home owner, a person who cannot hammer their way out of this project, with some plans and many questions. I am happy that I learned what I have, but I want to make sure I make the correct decisions, because the quotes I've gotten for a company doing all of this for us are steep. I could afford getting someone to take on this project, but fiscal priorities fall to a newborn, so I hope with some guidance I can still do this on my own.
The area in question can be seen here. The width, outside trim to outside trim, is 113" and the height, exterior trim to floor is 100". I plan on having the curtain rod affixed outside the trim and there are four inches between the balcony trim and the ceiling molding to accommodate mounting hardware. Ideally, I want double layered curtains that split in the middle.
Curtain rod (120 - 170") in 1" diameter. Explanation: The minimum distance to cover is the 113" width, but the rules I've read state to go three to six inches beyond your width to make your open space look bigger. So with this option, I have this telescoping rod at its minimum. I need to make sure the rod comes with a center support, but not worried about the curtains having to cross it since I am looking to pull the layers to their respective sides to open up.
Sheer curtains for the first layer (4 panels, 50" width x 99" height). Explanation: this is a custom build from pottery barn for which I'd select 50" width at about 99" length which is about the sum of the height (trim to stoop) plus the height to the hardware. I'll check the numbers for height once again when I finalize my pick on the hardware. The max width of these curtains is 50" and based on rules we want about 2x the opening so I would get four of these.
Curtains for the second layer (2 panels, 84" width x 101" height). Explanation: for the height, we're looking to have them longer than the sheer layer, but not touching the floor so looking at length of 101" or so. For the width, the rule again is to have 2x the width of the opening in panels, so I would order the 114" panels, but I don't want a lot of excess on the sides, hiding the trim and windows. I think 1.5x width would be okay, so I would rather get the 84" width.
I am really new to this world and still learning (gladly before making any purchases). I tried my best to pick out a good installation for the materials given the space I have to work with. Let me know if there is a more appropriate space for this post.

2023.06.10 23:44 InnerCabinet4941 Am I overreacting? I’m very stressed (product management). Bad mental state.

Need advice (product management). Bad mental state
Need some advice. Having some mental issues
New account to post this. I am in TX, have ~6 YOE operating in general management / analytics / product roles. Have been playing more of a traditional product role the last 2 years. Work at a very large public company. Have been at the same company for 6 years and have been a consistent top performer earning multiple promotions over the years.
I lead 2 product teams consisting of ~20 engineers, some designers, data engineers, data scientists and have a few product managers under me. Base salary is ~$170K with $20K bonus. Product I own is a portion of the user facing website.
I am not a traditional product manager. I was thrown into this position some time back due to being in the right place at the right time and the scope has grown significantly over the two years. All of that was fine until the last few months where macroeconomic factors are putting a ton of pressure on talent and we are pretty much forcing out the bottom 15%. It’s been a real punch in the gut sitting through these performance review sessions with stack ranking. Usually it’s pretty obvious who the bottom performers are, now the bar is arbitrary (but “rising”… whatever that means). We’ve started to hire Amazon execs in our product org and I can feel the culture shifting.
Here is my worry - I browse this subreddit and I am not like many of the folks here. I am not passionate about product, I don’t obsess about it. I am good at it, in my opinion due to my analytical skills & strong soft-skills & business judgment which usually leads to strong results. But now I’m starting to worry our culture is shifting and we will start bringing in talent that is just better than me. Maybe I am over reacting , but with the current economy I can’t help but look at our roadmap and wonder if any of this really even matters at year end, because if it doesn’t generate a bunch of money, who cares? It’s never really felt that way before.
All this to say, I’ve been working probably 70 hours/ week for the last year managing this department. Generally I am not very happy at work, but it hasn’t always been this bad in my 6 years.. who’s to say it won’t turn around once the economy is better (?). It’s gotten so bad that I had a pretty bad mental breakdown recently and I am starting to question my entire career path. I have talked with my manager and my performance is actually still very good, but at the cost of what? And will it be good enough going forward? It’s a lot of pressure. I used to be very happy at this company. The money is nice, it provides a nice life for me and my wife. But I’m beginning to wonder if it’s worth it.
I have started to talk to my manager about switching to software engineering within the company. I have programmed on the side for a while now, but I would expect to be demoted quite a bit. Probably bringing my base salary down to ~120-130K. I have no doubt if I can build the technical skills that I can move up in tech as in product my life is filled with meetings, presentations, stakeholder management. Etc.. all things our engineers get constant feedback on that they need to improve. I also notice the WLB of our engineers is much better, most don’t work more than 40 hours per week. I like programming, it’s fun building things and I don’t have to think about business strategy and how to generate millions of dollars on a daily basis.
This is all probably just stress and I need to vent. I don’t know. I have never felt unsure and incompetent about my abilities before, but I don’t feel great right now.
If you read this whole story - thanks for taking the time
EDIT: I originally wanted to post this in product management but couldn’t. So references so see to that sub are because of that.

2023.06.10 23:44 raitoStr [REQUEST][STEAM] Factorio (3rd Attempt)

Hello! In this post I'll tell you all about Factorio and why I want it. I am unfortunately not able to get this game for myself but hopefully there's a kind soul in this sub who can buy the game for me. Please excuse any spelling mistakes as English is not my first language.
About Factorio
You play as a character known only as the engineer. You crash land on an alien planet and the objective is "simple". Build a rocket and escape the planet. With only a pickaxe in hand you start off by mining ores, chopping trees and crafting transport belts and inserters by hand. Labs are used to research new technology and are fueled by science packs. Soon, you'll be able to make machines that mine ores or craft things for you. At the start of the game, things are mostly powered by coal but in a short time you'll be able to research and craft steam engines and boilers which turn water and coal into electricity. Everything in your base creates pollution and unfortunately, on this alien planet are, aliens. So called "biters" that have hives which absorb pollution to create more biters. more hives and evolve. You'll be able to defend yourself with a wide range of defenses such as turrets. Gun turrets, flamethrower turrets, laser turrets or artillery turrets all of which need ammo that can be crafted manually or automated. Later on, you'll be able to research modular armor customizable with personal laser defense, energy shields and more. You can also customize your world to your liking. You can completely disable enemy spawns or have them surround you right at the start of the game.
Factorio also supports multiplayer. Players can solve problems and build massive factories together, or they can go against each other in a PvP mode.
Why do I want Factorio?
Well, for starters, because it is an IMMENSELY satisfying game. With more than a 100,000 positive reviews on Steam, it has endless replayability, tons of QOL features, large overhaul mods like Krastorio 2 or Space Exploration for even more hours to sink into the game. It is a very polished game and you could find a bug in the fabric of reality before finding a bug in Factorio. I can easily see myself pour more than a 100 hours into the game. I also played the free demo for Factorio and after a couple of minutes, it got me hooked. It scratched an itch that I have not felt for YEARS after looking for many games to play. The only thing I was wondering when playing the demo is: how the hell haven't I found about the game earlier when it's so popular? It's an extremely well executed game and I'd have an absolute blast playing it.
End
If you read the entire post, thank you! I spent more than I'd like to admit on typing all this up.
Here is the link for my Steam account and Here for Factorio in case you need it. Have a good one!

E269 - custom workstation build (2.7L)
Greetings!
I’ve been a lurker on the sffpc subredit since I discovered the sff scene. I'm about to commence my own small form factor journey with the build described below. Hopefully I can get the input from the great community here as I make progress towards the finish line.
Build Objectives (in no particular order):
  1. Smallest form factor possible, with the goal to mount the build to the back of a monitor with a VESA 100 mount
  2. Ease of build within parameters of smallest form factor
  3. Ease of maintenance (where I live, that mostly comes down to controlling dust intake and making it easy to clean dust from a surface)
  4. Low power consumption
  5. No external power brick
To achieve the objectives above, I’ve chosen a path with an ITX motherboard, RTX A4000 GPU, and HDPLEX 250 GaN PSU. Because the A4000 utilizes a somewhat fully enclosed design itself, I have chosen to isolate the GPU from the enclosure of the motherboard and PSU. This allows the overall volume of the build to be reduced and produces a somewhat unique design aesthetic of putting the GPU on display outside of the case. To maintain Objective #3, custom mesh filter elements will be 3D printed and attached to either side of the A4000’s fan intakes.
Taking a page from u/raable's design for the Yocto / Talos build, this build will feature an aluminum backplate providing the mounting plate for the motherboard and GaN PSU. The aluminum backplate also serves additional purposes of a heatsink for the GaN (and potentially the motherboard), and a solid mounting point for the VESA 100 mounting system that will be utilized to mount the build to the back of a monitor. An enclosure for the motherboard and PSU will be 3D printed and then mounted to the backplate. This design also allows for a totally open build area, meeting Objective #2 above.
Cooling for the CPU/motherboard would be the Noctua NH-L9i. The PSU would be cooled passively by the aluminum backplate and potentially supplemented by a custom fan if needed (shown in images).
Dimensions are still being finalized based on the hardware chosen, but preliminarily the 3D printed enclosure has a volume just under 2L. The backplate adds another 0.2L. Finally, the A4000 has a volume of approximately 0.45L. Total volume comes in at around 2.7L.
Due to the diminutive size of the enclosure, I need to find an alternative to the typical C14 connector for the AC input. I’m looking at possibly using a MR60 connector as an option that would mount (along with the power switch) in the location of a void in the I/O area. The issue with the MR60 is that I have been unable to find a panel mount version of the connector, so mounting the connector could be cumbersome.

2023.06.10 23:41 Desert-Mushroom Do modern capital markets systematically undervalue large infrastructure projects and is this exacerbated by Baumol's cost disease? What solutions have been proposed if so?

It seems to me that the fundamentally short time horizons of most investors (limited by human lifespan and retirement horizon among other things) results in undervaluing infrastructure and capital investments. Here are a few examples:
1) Homes or apartment buildings may be produced at low quality due to new buyers only planning to live in them for 5-10 years before selling them. This results in higher aggregate housing costs due to increased utilities, maintenance and replacement costs.
2) A large hydroelectric dam or nuclear power plant with a lifespan of 80+ years may not be built despite resulting in a lower overall cost of electricity over a time horizon of several decades or more because it has lower financial returns over the first 20-30 years than a natural gas plant or a wind farm.
Baumol's cost disease as I understand it means that skilled localized labor such as might be involved in large construction projects will often go up faster than inflation, meaning spending today may be more efficient than costs of replacement tomorrow, since inflation of labor costs is high relative to the overall inflation index. If this is the case then we should want to build infrastructure to high quality, to last, and appropriately giving economic credit to a project with long term implications if it is likely to reduce future costs and resource burdens.
Is this question too subject to the value we place on current costs relative to future ones (ie through discount rates) to be objectively answered?
Is the primary solution simply to have government financing for large projects that are deemed worthwhile to society in the long term and how can we determine if these projects are indeed worthwhile with appropriate objective measures of public ROI?
In theory could we expect a shrinking population/economy to financially value large infrastructure projects more due to a potentially negative discount rate?
Tldr: all these are driving at the same general point of does standard financial discounting of capital result in a market failure for long lasting capital infrastructure that results in a less wealthy economy in the long run and how can this be corrected for either when modeling economic returns of a project or creating financial instruments to finance and build long lasting capital.
