2023.04.02 04:39 ArticleTotal8236 Issues with another moderator acting in bad faith and the rest of the mods being inactive

This is a throwaway account to prevent alerting the rest of my mod team prematurely.
Background:
I've been a mod for about a year now and mod 7 subs ranging in size from ~800 all the way up to ~3M members. I'm super engaged in my communities and my mod superpower is that I'm a master at automod and bots.
I've been a member (not a mod) of a sub with around 30k members for a few years now and I consider myself active in the community (voting daily, several comments a week, and a few posts a month). The sub had 4 mods until this week (they added me a few days ago).
Mod 1 (top mod) has been a mod of this community for 9 years, and has no activity at all in 9 years. Mod 2 has been a mod for 9 years, has daily activity around reddit, but no activity in the sub in 4 years. Mod 3 has been a mod for 7 years, has daily activity around reddit, but no activity in the sub in 2 years. Finally, mod 4 has been a mod for 6 months, has infrequent activity (3-4 weeks between comments and posts) around reddit, and had no activity in the sub in 6 months until this week.
Mod 4 (I assume) added a new automod function in the last six months that limited posting and commenting to only unknown aged accounts with an unknown amount of karma. Content from accounts that don't meet the age and karma criteria is removed and an automod comment tells them to go collect karma elsewhere.
The Issue:
Unfortunately, this automod function removes a lot of content from the sub every day. Dozens of comments daily and an unknown number of posts. While I'm sure the function was meant to target spam and was well intentioned at the time, the automod response itself has gotten spammy. More importantly, it has raised the question: how much collateral damage is this automod function causing?
A few days ago another member of the sub made a meta post directly calling out that automod was removing too much content. They created a photo post with a screenshot showing half of a thread was all removed due to the autmod function. OP asked for the mods to switch the automod function to filter instead of remove so the good content could be manually approved. The post got a lot of attention with quite a few upvotes and some 50 comments (a lot for a meta post in my opinion). Essentially the entire community agreed that automod removing so much content was an issue.
After several hours, mod 4 commented on the post (their first activity in the sub in 6 months) and said that they would not adjust the rule and that people should go get karma elsewhere. They also said that accounts that don't meet the karma requirement "don't understand reddit."
As I'm active in the community and a whiz with automod, I sent the team a modmail and offered to join and help out. I called out the meta post and agreed with the community that the automod function is causing a disturbance. I offered to help adjust automod to fine tune it to catch spam but not good faith content. Mod 4 agreed to add me to the team with only "Manage Posts & Comments" privileges and explicitly told me the automod function was here to stay and that they weren't interested in me changing it.
Here's where things get interesting. After becoming a mod I can now see the mod log and see just how much content is being removed. About 30 comments and 4-5 posts per day are being removed by automod and 99.9999% of it is good faith posts and comments. Just people wanting to participate in the sub. I only found a single comment in the log that I would have manually removed.
Not only that, but mod 4 is also actively removing content from the sub every day. After I reviewed the log and looked at the content they are removing, it is also good faith content.
My question:
What do I do here? Mods 1, 2, and 3 are inactive or inactive in the sub. Mod 4 is not acting in good faith and, in my opinion, is hurting the community by being a mod. I'm the new guy on the list. I didn't initially offer to be a mod so that I could hijack the team, but after seeing the mod log I think that's what needs to be done. I'm sure this gets said a lot by mods, but I sincerely want what's best for my communities and I just don't think the current mod team is delivering that at all.
I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Should I sit on my hands and see if the situation improves and I can convince mod 4 of the error in their ways? Should I make a redditrequest? Should I.....?
Sorry this is long, but I wanted people to have the appropriate context. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

2023.04.02 00:26 Says_Watt Craigslist vs FB Marketplace (Discussion About User Identity)

I've been doing some research on some of the popular local buy/sell marketplaces, and it appears FB Marketplace is taking significant market share from platforms like Craigslist and OfferUp. It seems a lot of people really like that on FB Marketplace you can screen the buyeseller by looking at their profile before agreeing to meet up for a transaction. Of course FB also has a ton of users which is great for market liquidity, but I wanna keep this discussion focused on the identity of users. I may be in the minority, but I personally don't like linking the things I buy and sell to my personal profile on FB.
One of the biggest issues with Craigslist, as many people know, is that spam/bots/fraud is rampant and seriously degrades user experience. This problem is especially acute for Craigslist because the barrier to entry (ie creating an account to participate) is so low. In fact potential buyers don't even need to create an account to message sellers.
I wanted to get people's thoughts on whether they see Craigslist's lack of user identity as a strength or weakness?
If Craigslist could figure out a way to significantly reduce spam/bots/fraud posts & messages would you use it over FB Marketplace assuming both sites had the same number of buyers & sellers? Or would the lack of identity on Craigslist make you prefer FB Marketplace instead?
I'd love to hear what everyone thinks about this subject, whether it's a direct response to the question or just sharing your thoughts and opinions!

2023.04.01 20:00 Dependent-Hold-2228 I've finally been broken.

Some context / rant: I've been an ADC main since the Froggen Anivia fell out of meta around S3ish, and every season since the honor system has been out I've been honor level 5. I hardly ever time and most times I just have chat disabled entirely. I mute emotes and even pings if they start getting spammed. This season I have dealt with actual COUNTLESS amounts of Teemo support and the likes from players who obviously have no intention of fulfilling the support role, and even this I have been mostly okay with. Cue to the other day, where I get bot as last pick, so my first pick top laner requests a swap which I always am willing to swap with top/mid/jg for counterpick since I know that usually has more impact on the game in general. So I get thrown into first pick and decide to pick Seraphine since she's a pretty safe laner with decent damage and CC plus she has a pretty good winrate. My support doesn't say anything but locks in Annie which I have no problems with since I like Annie support a lot. However, randomly, with NO CHAT INTERACTION, the Annie just decides to WQ the cannon wave as I'm farming it, taking all the CS. She then recalls, sells her support item, and just starts farming the waves over and over leaving me with none. Again, there has been no chat interaction so I just ping her off a few times but to no avail. This is where I broke. There was nothing I felt I could do, I was just being held hostage by my support. I thought if they were gonna troll me, then I should just troll back, so I started inting and fucking with the Annie. Obviously this wasn't the right thing to do; I gave into my emotions and I deserved the punishment I got, but even when I asked annie at the end of the game why she did that, she just responded "because you didn't pick a real adc" and I just got so confused because Sera is one of the highest winrate champs at least on Blitz and people on Reddit talk about playing Sera/Veigar all the time and good it is. Anyways yeah just a rant on trying to play soloQ ADC and how it slowly destroyed my mental. I'm queueing top/jungle now and it's been honestly so much better not having my entire game in the hands of some random who could decide that they just hate me for no reason.

2023.04.01 18:22 AliensS2Bacon More questions on Senna + What I learned in 60 games

More questions on Senna + What I learned in 60 games

Acc: Usem os Pings #BR1
I'm the guy who asked about Lethality Senna a few days ago, but before I begin I'd like to come clean on some clickbaity things:
  1. I play in BR server, while it is the biggest server excluding major regions (NA, EUW, KR, CN), I recognize it ain't that much of an accomplishment;
  2. These are not my first games on Senna, I have around 100k mastery points on her playing 4fun;
  3. I'm a Shaco OTP in Grandmaster level, so I have a major advantage by both knowing jungle macro and having played against supports at a higher level (this is something I can assist on any doubts you may have).
Wanting to include everyone on the subreddit, I'd like to firstly ask questions about some of my doubts (your collective experience helps me a bunch), and secondly give you guys a few tips which you can also correct me in the comments.
Questions:
  • Are there any content creators I can follow? (looking for high elo ranked content)
  • Is ulting to get an assist good? (there's no danger of my team dying)
  • Warding lvl 1 vs hook support/hard engage, should the ward be placed in lane brush or Tri-Brush (playing on blue side)?
  • Lvl 1 W, is it effective on any matchup? Has more dmg/cc on an invade, but idk about laning with it
  • How good are the mobility options (Zeal Item, Swiftness Boots, Approach Velocity) and when can I skip them?
  • Having stalked high elo accs throughout regions, I see nobody goes domination secondary, but I feel like it could work situationally, any thoughts?
  • How good is Haste on Senna? I feel like she doesn't even have the mana pool to spam abilities
Tips (?):
  • Trading flash for a kill feels bad, 300g is not worth having to play less aggro for the next 5 mins, best exceptions to this rule are: when a kill allows you to secure objectives; you deny a big wave of xp/gold for the enemy AD (early game); their comp scales harder
  • Staying alive is core (following the last statement), staying on the map to collect xp/souls is the best way to scale late game, easiest way to avoid lvl 1-4 ganks is by warding around 2:30 if their jungler started topside (good window that covers earlier 3 camp ganks and full clear into bot gank)
  • Cheesing is fun, not getting cheesed is better. Snowballing in this meta is strong, speeding the game up by trading kills in an invade is not that good on a champ who wishes to play games at a slower pace
  • Easiest way of winning lane is waiting the enemy to miss their spells and punish, best way of winning lane is finding the timings to start a trade yourself (active mistakes vs passive mistakes)
  • Jungler is your friend, specially in drake metas. When mid lane has prio and jungler is botside, it gets very easy to simply crash the wave and shotcall dragons. Alternatively, setting up a gank before dragon is a good way to get numbers advantage and get it for free.
  • If you are fasting with a duo, Cho'Gath is the easier pairing with Senna, simply having lost chapter on Cho secures infinite mana and never having to worry about dives due to huge AoE
  • Lethality builds are at its best when Senna isn't allowed to auto often (quite good bAD scalings for a support), and does poorly if their frontline blocks you from hitting squishy targets
  • Locket builds are the worst to fall behind, only play them if you can play aggro to stack souls and save your R + Locket + Heal to save your carries (the combo heals/shields for ~600 at lvl 9), main weakness is when game ends before you start doing meaningful damage
  • Crit/on-hit builds are very expensive but compensate on versatility, with many options vs squishy and tankier targets.
I apologize for the huge chunk of text, but I really hope you guys can help me improve on the champion.

Fashion posts are frequently posted along with discussion posts, so the results here are not surprising. Fashion is one of the game's selling points after all.
Respondents also said they feel that meme and video posts are too frequent too.

What is your opinion on the Subreddit's current rules?

Option Amount
The rules do not need to be changed 48
The rules should be made stricter 5
The rules should be loosened 0
Most said that the rules do not need to be changed, while some said they should be made stricter. A later question asked those that said the rules need to be changed for clarification on what should be changed. I'll detail them below.

What do you feel about the current moderation of the Subreddit?

"10 and 11 ought to be enforced properly."

This is referring to Rule 10 "Low-effort memes/content", and Rule 11 "Keep screenshot/art/video posts to one per day".
For Rule 10, this is something that we have not been proactive enough on, and there are posts that have slipped through that go against this rule that should have been removed. This is something that I wish we can improve on.
For Rule 11, earlier this year we added a new bot to the subreddit that should help enforce this rule automatically for us, but checking the modlog, it doesn't appear to be working correctly. We have removed posts that go against this rule when we spot them.
Please remember though to use reddit's reporting feature if you feel that a post or comment goes against the subreddit's rules. There should be an option to specify what rule the post or comment goes against.

"More strictness toward doomposting and the like"

For any posts and comments that are intentionally negative to a point where they want the game to do poorly, shut down or discourage those from playing it because "game bad" with no explanation, then yes we do remove these as we spot them. Genuine criticism doesn't have a reason to be removed as long as it sticks to the subreddit's rules.

"Fashion, video, and meme posts should be limited to megathreads."

I cannot say that I agree with this. A lot of the subreddit's activity comes from these posts. Restricting them to megathreads would tuck them away into places where less will see them.
If your method of browsing reddit allows you to filter posts by flair, you can use that to hide types of posts you don't want to see. You can also type criteria into the search bar like flair:"Discussion" to only show a specific type of post.

"What remains irksome to me are low value, low effort, low IQ posts; I don't know how one could filter these out, so I'm not sure it's feasible to increase strictness of rules. Here are a couple recent examples. (removed two links to posts from different users)"

The first post really should have been in the weekly questions megathread. The second was just a suggestion that didn't really have anything wrong with it.

"Less spam of fashion and video only posts (example, guide/news/advice with only a video and no text summarizing video)"

Please see my response to the megathreads question above regarding fashion posts.
For the video-only posts, I do agree with you for the most part. There are YouTube video posts where a "content creator" just posts a link to their video and peace out, without making an effort to interact with the community here. We do remove these posts if done excessively. I don't think all videos posted here need such a preamble though. I will bring this up with the mod team.
Thank you to the 5 people that submitted this feedback. It is very helpful.

On a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest, how do you rate the current moderation of the Subreddit by the Subreddit's moderators?

Rating Amount
1 1
2 0
3 15
4 20
5 17
Most responded with 4, with 5 and 3 behind. One submitted a rating of 1.

What do you feel about the current moderation of the Subreddit?

I won't go over each of the 13 responses, but here are the ones that I feel I can respond to:

"don't like mods deleting comments even if they break the rules because everything loses context and makes it look like silencing opinions, just locking/banning should be enough"

Often the users making these comments that break the subreddit rules do not deserve more attention to their comments, and we also remove the comments from other users in response to those to help prevent further disruption. You can use a service like Unddit to see removed comments if you like.

"It is fine, a bit too many fashion posts/some "humor" posts like (hidden user) that I ignore and move on, wish there were more discussions, the lore, gameplay, prediction and community discussions are always good reads."

I hope that the game has more to discuss soon.

"Mostly fine. But there have been times when a mod will "speak as a mod" and pin the comment for things outside of moderation or subreddit business"

raises hand Guilty. This is something I have been meaning to prevent myself from misusing. This is the first subreddit that I have done moderation on, and before then I've experienced various styles of moderation both hands-off and hands-on, both silly and formal. I hope this has improved in the past months.

"Never had a problem, post variety is good and there isn't a massive clutter of the same type of post. I would say there is more cosplay/fashion than other posts, but that is the nature of the game/community."

It's good to hear that the post variety is good.

"Thank you for reducing drama since release; this was my largest frustration with the subreddit and it's manageable now."

Thank you for sticking around and for the complement :)

"i'd like to see the datamine rules loosened. fashion posts should have no more than 4 images (look breakdowns excluded)"

For the datamining rules, I do wish we could too, but like I said before, I don't want us to get in trouble because somebody posted an unreleased DOLLS' ass-cheek. I'm not sure why images should be limited to 4. Do they take up too much room on your screen, or do you think it is unfair?

"Appreciate the 1 time per day rule on screenshot/art/video."

I hope we can continue to enforce it.

"They are pretty good about negating very angry and condescending comments. Otherwise there isn't enough activity on the Reddit to really worry about much. Activity on the Reddit follows the low activity in the game there's just not much going on at any given time."

Yeah, with how the game is in terms of the pace of updates and the niche community, this subreddit is rather slow. I actually do like.
I think in the future, if the subreddit does get more activity, we can perhaps look at bolstering our moderation team.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to type these response, really thank you. We appreciate it.

What kinds of resources would you like to see added to the Subreddit?

This was an optional question that got 48 responses.
Option Amount
Links to guides on other websites written by community members, such as for getting started, class guides, skill trees, etc.. 35
Links to high-quality video creators on websites like YouTube, Twitch, etc.. 16
Links to communities on other websites like forums, Mastodon (the fediverse), etc.. 15
Many want guides to be linked to, and this is something that I would love to do, perhaps by using the subreddit wiki feature. In the meantime, the Phantasy Star Fleet Discord server has guide channels dedicated to both NGS and base PSO2.
For the "high-quality video creators on websites", somebody actually gave a lengthy custom response that I'll put below:
Content creators do not belong in the sidebar. That's nothing but drama drama drama. Because at some point, someone has to set a "high quality" standard, and it's always arbitrary and someone will get hurt/mad/ostracized/whathaveyou. It could even lead to people abandoning the subreddit and forming a new one if the wrong creator is supported. What can work though, is linking to Sega's list of partnered creators (puts the drama on Sega rather than individuals), this seems to work fine in other gaming subreddits.
Agreed. We can set up a link to the "NGS Official Creators" page handled by SEGA. That makes more sense than maintaining our own. Thank you for reminding me that it exists :D
For the "links to other communities", if anybody has any suggestions on what to add, we can look at and add them if we feel they are worth adding to the subreddit wiki and "new reddit" menu. We've already done that for the PSO-World forums and Phantasy Star Fleet. I should add the "Arks Cafe" Misskey (Fediverse) server as well.
I'll also list the other custom responses here:

"Weapon guides w/ the class guides; Maybe guides or references to moneymaking strategies (PSE burst tech, note farming, etc.). Maybe a link to the NGS Official Creators page."

Please see my responses above.

"A stickied post for commonly asked questions"

The weekly questions megathread does have some links that should help out, but this is something we can improve on. We do have a FAQ wiki page that I created but I have admittedly neglected it...

"Link to the Arks Visiphone wiki as a high quality source of information about the game. May answer a lot of questions that eople may otherwise post on the subreddit"

We already do have links to this in some places, but we can look at making it more obvious

"A video game"

sir this is a community-run subreddit

"Possibly a news bot or a dedicated poseter for pso2 website articles to cut down on repetitive questions"

We are already looking into this :)

How did you originally find the Subreddit? Select all that apply.

This was an optional question and got 52 responses.

The /pso2 Subreddit 39
Thank you for answering this question. Many said they came from the /pso2 subreddit, with the rest coming from search engines, recommendations and social media. The following custom responses were given too:
Ooh a Digg user. I never used it, but I've heard how it essentially self-destructed.

What servers do you play on for PSO2:NGS?

This was multi-choice.
Option Amount
Global 49
JP 9
Naturally many users here play on the Global server, but some, including me, play on the Japanese server.

If your feedback has not already been covered by the previous questions, please write it below.

Thank you sooooo much to everyone who took part in this survey. I am hoping to do something like this again next year.

2023.04.01 15:08 hkgTA Are these griefers noobs or bots or both?

Hi everyone, I'm posting because my in-game friend and I have had issues with some very peculiar teammates we get matched with when playing Aftermath. I swear this is not an April Fools prank as it actually started happening in March, but today was the third time it happened and it's getting annoying. Here's a link to an imgur thread for more info on them. One of them ended up getting banned, which I didn't get notified about, so I don't think it had to do with my report.
Their strategy is this:
  1. have characters and outfits as shown in the imgur thread
  2. parachute with us (or not)
  3. pick up no loot
  4. don't move farther than a few meters from the landing position
  5. drown, get killed by bots or lucky players eventually
  6. immediately spam "help" and "please recall me" until recall is unavailable, then only spam "help"
  7. don't give likes at the end of the match as most people do, even if we've won
I've reported all players I noticed this happening with as "griefer teammates" and I made myself a guest account, which made me realize that the outfits the bots are wearing are noob outfits. The first time it happened, we had two griefers in our squad, the second time only one, and the third time (today) two again. I took screenshots of the first and the third time. I'm not sure if it matters, but whenever we had two griefers they were not getting matched together like my friend and I, so it doesn't seem like an organized sabotage or whatever. They all had names that were random letters/numbers and were ranking low in all rankings.
Has anybody else experienced this or does anyone know more about this issue?
Edit: we usually play on his server (Asia) but I'm based in Europe

2023.04.01 13:37 hPALLY6329 [EU] Looking for active, dedicated players to Grind Faceit! [LvL 7+] (3 man Prem) or (5 man Stack)

Hey there,
I am looking for active, dedicated people to grind Faceit with, trying to make a full stack or queue 3 man Premium!
We currently have around 10 people that play with each other, all from different countries (UK, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and etc), however, not many are very active, therefore, I am trying to get more people so there is almost always something going on!
Our levels range from 7 to 10 (up to 2.7k elo).
All have good mics, non-toxic, have good utility knowledge and game awareness.
Please make sure you are: -Level 7+, -Have a good microphone, be able to speak English decently, -Don't be toxic (if you are pre-muted in-game, please don't bother adding me), -Have basic utility knowledge and good game awareness, -Have a stable connection / internet, -Please don't have a private profile or inventory otherwise I may mistake you for a bot account.
Even though we do not practice or participate in tournaments, just playing Faceit/Esportal together, there is a trialing process for every new person joining the group, you will be tested.
If you're interested, please add me on steam for further information:
https://steamcommunity.com/id/hpally
Mention "reddit" on my steam profile when adding, so I know the reason, otherwise I will most likely ignore your invitation due to having a lot of spam.
Thank you in advance,
hpally

🧞Summon a mod 🧞

While monitoring the sub we have noticed that sometimes members mention us moderators because they want some mod feedback or when they have a quick question.
Some of you tag individual mods, which is fine too. But we wanted to make things a little easier for you. So we added a new member command: !Mod / !Mods / !Moderator / !Moderators (basically all variants). When you use this, automod will summon/tag a few moderators for you.
Hopefully this will make it easier for all of us to engage with eachother!

You can still use our FORM to report scammers. If you recieve a sketchy DM, please screenshot it and send it along as proof.

💬 In regards to our Discord 💬

  • Our discord now requires members to have atleast 500 karma in order to join.
  • Reddit's TOS carry over into our Discord. Meaning if your account is banned by Reddit, we will remove you from the server. If you join back again, on a new Reddit account, this qualifies as ban evasion and this will be reported to Reddit Admins.
  • If you break the rules in our Discord, depending on what rule you broke, you might also be banned from the subreddit.
  • Questions regarding Discord time-outs can ONLY asked via modmail in the server.
  • Questions regarding Discord bans can ONLY be asked via modmail on site.

Do not approach any individual moderators via DM's regarding time-outs and bans. This is for everyone's safety. Modmail cannot be altered or deleted, so it won't turn into a he said/she said situation.
