Why is this a thing in a aviation subreddit?
There was a post about a regional airport in Germany that got broken into by environmentalists; they painted a whole citation and sprayed into the cowlings on both engines, most likely fucked up the exterior instruments too. Just find this very ironic in a sub dedicated to aviation, and a lot of people were there with the same sentiments. Just wanted to see others’ thoughts on sustainable aviation for the future but it seems many just want to admire from the outside and try to burn it to the ground whenever I comes down to brass tacks.

2023.06.08 16:10 Diacris933 Are Bluetooth headphones harmful or safe? Here's some truth to this controversy

An increasing number of people keep asking questions like "are bluetooth headphones harmful?" and "are wireless headphones dangerous?" This is a controversial subject, in which people are very attached to their wireless headphones and often take the view that their acquisition is not detrimental to them.
Anyway, I thought it would be helpful to share my perspective on this topic. After all, most of us use headphones for everyday listening, don't we? Like, is Bluetooth bad for your brain or something? And how about AirPods? Are AirPods bad for your brain too?
To begin with, let me say that there's no sign of Bluetooth causing cancer or anything like that. Sure, it's a type of radiation, but it's non-ionizing, which means it doesn't have enough energy to knock electrons off atoms and create the kind of damage that leads to an increased cancer risk. So, you can probably chill on that front.
As for the whole "are bluetooth headphones bad for your brain" thing, I think it's mostly just people being paranoid. I mean, sure, you might lose your hearing by the time you suffer cognitive effects from using them, but that's more about the volume than the Bluetooth itself. And let's be real, if you're cranking your tunes that loud, you've got bigger problems to worry about.
Hell, if you drink a bottle of whisky a week or smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, the question of whether radiation from Bluetooth headphones causes cancer is probably the least of your worries.
On the other hand, if you're health guru that strives to eliminate all potential risks from your life, stay away from Bluetooth or wireless headphones.
While Bluetooth headphones don't cause cancer, they're not entirely harmless.
The radiation emitted by Bluetooth devices is measured in 10 - 100 mW (milliwatts) which over many years with several hours of everyday use, can have some health effects.
Every Reddit and forum thread will have some people cmomenting "No, it's non-ionizing. My Bluetooth headphones are not harmful!"
I get it, the radiation is low, usage is moderate, and the most of the scientific community claims that non-ionizing radiation is harmless and all that. But headphones come extremely close to your body, and plenty of research has proven that long-term exposure to low-level radiation can have negative effects on human health.
Here's a few resources: - A 2010 study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found increased behavioral problems in children with prenatal and postnatal cell phone exposure. - A 2015 study in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health discovered higher glycated hemoglobin levels and type 2 diabetes risk in students exposed to higher RF EMF. - A 2018 study in the American Journal of Men's Health revealed delayed motor skills, spatial working memory, and attention in adolescents exposed to higher RF EMF levels.
Now, I will say that wired headphones are safer than wireless headphones in terms of radiation exposure. While wireless headphones might not be the healthiest option, they're not exactly dangerous or detrimental to your quality of life either, especially if used in moderation.
Bottom line, I do think Bluetooth headphones are terrible in terms of both quality and health. I mean, you're basically trading convenience for a worse listening experience and a tiny bit of radiation exposure.

2023.06.08 16:09 someoneaskingqs Hiking recommendations

Hey there,
I will be visiting Brasov from London at the end of the month. Do you have any cool hiking recommendations? I was thinking about Piatra Craiului. Do you have a specific one in mind? We're in good shape, so something not extremely difficult but with stunning views would be ideal. We plan to take a train in the morning, so if it's a hike that can be done in 5-6 hours, that would be perfect.
Any recommendations for other things to do are also welcome.
Cheers!

2023.06.08 16:02 FelicitySmoak_ Song Of The Day Discussion : "They Don't Care About Us"

Song Of The Day Discussion :
"They Don't Care About Us"
April 16, 1996 - 5th single from HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I
Brazil
Prison
Written & produced by Michael Jackson
"They Don't Care About Us" is a protest song and remains one of the most controversial pieces Jackson ever composed. In the US, media scrutiny surrounding allegations of antisemitic lyrics were the catalyst for Jackson issuing multiple clarifications, an apology, defense from director Spike Lee and re-releasing the song with a new vocal featuring altered lyrics. He countered allegations of antisemitism, arguing that reviews had misinterpreted the context of the song, either unintentionally or deliberately.

https://i.redd.it/ijp8iir5nm4b1.gif
The song begins with a group of children singing the chorus, "All I wanna say is that they don't really care about us". In between the chorus lines, one child chants, "Don't worry what people say, we know the truth", after which another child says, "Enough is enough of this garbage!"
On June 15, 1995, a day before the release of HIStory, The New York Times reported that "They Don't Care About Us" contained racist and anti-Semitic content. The publication highlighted the lyrics, "Jew me, sue me, everybody do me/ Kick me, kike me, don't you black or white me."Jackson responded directly to the publication, stating:
"The idea that these lyrics could be deemed objectionable is extremely hurtful to me, and misleading. The song in fact is about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems. I am the voice of the accused and the attacked. I am the voice of everyone. I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the black man, I am the white man. I am not the one who was attacking. It is about the injustices to young people and how the system can wrongfully accuse them. I am angry and outraged that I could be so misinterpreted."

https://i.redd.it/x8nqef2qnm4b1.gif
When questioned further about the lyrics on the ABC News program Prime Time Live, Jackson stated:
"It's not anti-Semitic because I'm not a racist person ... I could never be a racist. I love all races."
He also said that some of his closest employees and friends were Jewish. That same day, Jackson received support from his manager and record label, who described the lyrics as "brilliant", that they were about opposition to prejudice and taken out of context. The following day, two leading members of the Jewish community stated that Jackson's attempt to make a song critical of discrimination had backfired. They expressed the opinion that the lyrics used were unsuitable for a teenage audience that might not understand the song's context, adding that the song was too ambiguous for some listeners to understand. They accepted that Jackson meant well and suggested that the entertainer write an explanation in the album booklet

https://preview.redd.it/oetp490tnm4b1.jpg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f65ec21458fa37e4b723a63d1018c9276052a05c
On June 17, Michael issued another public apology for his choice of words. He promised that future copies of the album would include an apology. By this point, however, two million copies of the record had already been shipped. The singer concluded:
"I just want you all to know how strongly I am committed to tolerance, peace and love, and I apologize to anyone who might have been hurt." The next day, in his review of HIStory, Jon Pareles of The New York Times alleged, "In ... 'They Don't Care About Us', he gives the lie to his entire catalog of brotherhood anthems with a burst of anti-Semitism"
On June 21, Patrick Macdonald of The Seattle Times criticized Jackson, stating, "He may have lived a sheltered life, but there really is no excuse for using terms like 'Jew me' and 'kike' in a pop song, unless you make it clear you are denouncing such terms, and do so in an artful way" Two days later, Jackson decided, despite the cost incurred, he would return to the studio and alter the offending wording on future copies of the album; "Jew me" and "Kike me" would be substituted with "do me" and "strike me". The music video and some copies of the album still carry the original words, but with loud, abstract noises partially drowning them out. He reiterated his acceptance that the song was offensive to some. Spike Lee defended Jackson's use of the word, by mentioning the double standard from the media:
"While The New York Times asserted the use of racial slurs in 'They Don't Care About Us', they were silent on other racial slurs in the album. The Notorious B.I.G. says 'ni**a' on "This Time Around," another song on the HIStory album, but it did not attract media attention, as well as, many years before, use in lyricof the words 'ni**er' by John Lennon"

This song gained renewed attention and relevance due to its use during Black Lives Matter protests in 2014 and 2015, and again in 2020.

https://i.redd.it/npwchexwnm4b1.gif
Commercially, it became a top ten hit in European countries and #1 in the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Italy. In the UK, "They Don't Care About Us" peaked at #4 on the UK Singles Chart and stayed on the chart for three months. The song found particular success in the rest of Europe, peaking within the top ten in all countries, except in Spain, where it peaked at #11 and remained in the chart for just one week. European highlights came in Austria, Switzerland, France, Belgium and Sweden, where the song became a top five hit and stayed in each country's respective charts for a minimum of 21 weeks. It reached the top of the charts for three weeks in Germany and stayed a full 30 weeks in the survey, marking the longest consecutive chart run of a Michael Jackson song on the German chart
The lyrical controversy surrounding "They Don't Care About Us" brought partial commercial disappointment in the US. It peaked at #30 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, falling short of the record breaking success of the two previous singles, "Scream/Childhood" and "You Are Not Alone", yet the song peaked at #10 on the US Billboard Hot R&B Singles chart.

Larry Flick from Billboard noted that the song's much-documented offending words were obscured by sound effects. He wrote, "With or without those words, this song comes across as less an intended indictment of the world's oppressive forces and more as lightly shrouded ramblings of personal paranoia. There is nothing wrong with an artist pouring personal experience into a song, of course, but the range of emotion displayed in Jackson's snarling vocal would be far more affecting within a more direct lyrical context." A reviewer from Music Week rated "They Don't Care About Us" four out of five, adding, "With echoes of Bad, Jackson's next single from HIStory sees him in tougher mode, with some real raucous guitar backing his soaring vocals." The magazine's Alan Jones described it as "a slim, sylph-like tirade, economical and angry." He concluded, "The quality of the song is there however, and Jacko's on a roll. Number one?" Jim Farber of New York Daily News said that Jackson "snarled" while singing, that the song "clicked" and has an "original clattering rhythm".

https://preview.redd.it/dafxj5d2om4b1.jpg?width=267&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8482d8beb3c3f6bc135e201eac3dd283ef5d5d2f
Jon Pareles from The New York Times stated that Jackson was calling himself "a victim of police brutality" and a "victim of hate". He continued, "A listener might wonder just who 'Us' is supposed to be ... To make the songs lodge in the ear, Jackson uses elementary singsong melodies – a 'nyah, nyah' two-note motif in 'They Don't Care About Us' ... and he comes up with all kinds of surprises in the arrangements". James Hunter of Rolling Stone magazine noted that, musically, Jackson was no longer trying to hide any eccentricities he had and added that, with "They Don't Care About Us", the pop musician sounded more embattled than ever. The review of HIStory in The Washington Times noted of "They Don't Care About Us": "[it] follows fast, inviting more pathos – and more controversy. With haunting clapping and a police scanner in the background". The Sacramento Bee described it as a "looped reggae-lite dance beat".
"They Don't Care About Us" was accompanied by two music videos directed by Lee. The first was shot in two locations in Brazil: in Pelourinho, the historic city center of Salvador; and in Santa Marta, a favela of Rio de Janeiro.State authorities tried to ban production over fears the video would damage their image, the area and prospects of Rio de Janeiro staging the 2004 Olympics. Still, the residents of the area were happy to see Michael, hoping their problems would be made visible to a wider audience. The second video was shot in a prison and contained video footage of multiple references to human rights abuses
Producing the first music video for "They Don't Care About Us" proved to be a difficult task. State authorities unsuccessfully tried to ban him from filming in Salvador (Pelourinho) and in Rio de Janeiro. Officials in the state of Rio feared images of poverty might affect tourism and accused Jackson of exploiting the poor. Ronaldo Cezar Coelho, the state secretary for Industry, Commerce and Tourism, demanded editing rights over the finished product, stating, "I don't see why we should have to facilitate films that will contribute nothing to all our efforts to rehabilitate Rio's image". Some were concerned that scenes of poverty and human rights abuses would affect their chances of hosting the Olympics in 2004. Others supported Jackson's wish to highlight the problems of the region, arguing that the government were embarrassed by their own failings.

https://i.redd.it/kfiguhk6om4b1.gif
A judge banned all filming but this ruling was overturned by an injunction. Although officials were angry, the residents were not and Jackson was surrounded by crowds of enthusiastic onlookers during filming. One woman managed to push through security to hug Jackson who continued dancing while hugging her.

Another woman appeared and hugged him from behind. He then fell to the ground as police pulled the two women off him and escorted them away. After the director helped Jackson get up off the street, he continued to sing and dance. This incident made it into the music video.

https://i.redd.it/pzgq8lryom4b1.gif
1,500 policemen and 50 residents acting as security guards effectively sealed off the Santa Marta favela. Some residents and officials found it offensive that Jackson's production team had negotiated with drug dealers in order to gain permission to film in one of the city's shantytowns.

https://i.redd.it/vcw5555pom4b1.gif

https://i.redd.it/z8m38tbqom4b1.gif
The music video was directed by Spike Lee. Asked why he chose Lee to direct the video, Jackson responded:
"'They Don't Care About Us' has an edge, and Spike Lee had approached me. It's a public awareness song and that's what he is all about. It's a protest kind of song ... and I think he was perfect for it"
Jackson also collaborated with 200 members of the cultural group Olodum, who "swayed to the heavy beat of Salvador's 'samba-reggae' music". The media interest surrounding the music video exposed Olodum to 140 countries around the world, bringing them worldwide fame and increased credibility in Brazil. At the beginning of the video, a Brazilian woman says, "Michael, eles não ligam pra gente" (Portuguese for "Michael, they don't care about us"), recorded by Angélica Vieira, producer of Manhattan Connection

https://i.redd.it/57hk8vw2pm4b1.gif

Speaking of the music video, in The New Brazilian Cinema, Lúcia Nagib observed:
"When Michael Jackson decided to shoot his new music video in a favela of Rio de Janeiro ... he used the favela people as extras in a visual super-spectacle ... All the while there is a vaguely political appeal in there ... The interesting aspect of Michael Jackson's strategy is the efficiency with which it gives visibility to poverty and social problems in countries like Brazil without resorting to traditional political discourse. The problematic aspect is that it does not entail a real intervention in that poverty"
In 2009, Billboard described the area as "now a model for social development" and claimed that Jackson's influence was partially responsible for this improvement

https://i.redd.it/e24zlo16pm4b1.gif
As of April 2023, the music video has received over 1 billion views. It became Jackson's second music video (after "Billie Jean") to achieve this feat, Making Jackson the first male solo artist from the 20th century to have two music videos achieve one billion views.
For the first time in his career, Michael made a second music video for a single. This second version was filmed in a prison with cell mates; in the video Jackson is seen handcuffed. It also contains real footage of police attacking African Americans (including the beating of Rodney King), the military crackdown of the protests in the Tiananmen Square, the Ku Klux Klan, war crimes, genocide, execution, martial law, and other human rights abuses. This version is rarely to never played on television and has less than a tenth of the views of the Rio video on YouTube.

https://i.redd.it/q70h3sa9pm4b1.gif
The first music video of the song appears on the box set Visionary: The Video Singles, as well as on the video albums HIStory on Film, Volume II. The prison version is included on Vision

https://i.redd.it/wds62wngpm4b1.gif
In 2020, Spike Lee put together a third music video that incorporates pieces of both the Brazil and prison versions, as well as footage from various Black Lives Matter protests occurring around the world at that time.
"They Don't Care About Us" was only performed as part of the opening medley for the HIStory World Tour, along with "Scream" and "In the Closet". The segment for "They Don't Care About Us" began with a short, military-style dance sequence and contained an excerpt of "HIStory".
A short unedited video clip released after Jackson's death of the June 23, 2009 rehearsal for the This Is It concert series shows him performing the song as the main song in a medley with parts of "HIStory," as well as "Why You Wanna Trip On Me" and "She Drives Me Wild" from Dangerous.

"They Don't Care About Us" was remixed with parts of songs such as "Privacy" (from the album Invincible) and "Tabloid Junkie" (from HIStory), and released on the Immortal album, in November 2011.
The song was covered by the band Beast in Black as a bonus track on their 2021 album Dark Connection
It has been sampled in 31 songs, including:
"Shittin' on the World" (1996) by Dr. Dre feat. Mel-Man, Hands-On and D-Ruff
"They Don't Care" (2010) by Meek Mill and DJ Drama
"Bad Kids" (2011) by Lady Gaga

2023.06.08 15:57 hopefulfuturex Arguments over house chores (M39), (F29)

We've been together for about 7-8 years and have lived together just as long. The responsibilities of certain chores, I feel have naturally shifted back and forth. We've gone though a lot of shit together and this year and a half, have finally been mostly peaceful.
He works from home, I do not. He has two kids, I have none. For a very long time he was always doing the dishes, I was always cooking. I felt like that was a good balance. Then out of no where, he just started to never do them, and I picked it up for a few weeks. After the third week, I finally asked him about it and he said he had stopped since I never did them. I was confused because I thought that the previous arrangement was working fine and he never said anything about it. Suddenly, I found myself doing three people's laundry, while he was doing his. I bit the bullet for a while, but finally asked him why he wouldn't do his kids' laundry. He said they were old enough to do it themselves. I do agree. (Preteen and a teen)
However, this is the wall I feel like we're constantly running into and I don't know what to do to change it: he works from home. He's here all day. I am not and for the last few weeks with work, have been getting home late or have been helping people after work. (Ex: Cleaning my grandfather's house) His desk is 10 feet away from the kitchen sink, I get it, he wants it clean. But I feel like I'm already stretched so thin and this always seems to erupt before the weekend when I can't reasonably have time to do anything. He views that as an excuse. His version of things always being clean, isn't always a deep clean or actual clean, but then claims I'm always messy. (Stupid example, but wiping the counters down with water instead of actually using a cleaning product) I also admittedly have a lot of clothes and we live in a townhome with not enough closet space, I've tried to do everything I can think of to make more room or utilize more storage, but it's not enough. I need to go through them, but again, time. And again, we are only doing our own laundry now, so he does his own laundry during the day and I really don't have time until the weekend.
The passive aggressiveness of it is killing me, though. Waking up in the morning to dishes being slammed purposefully, gives me PTSD of my narcissistic mother, and I immediately feel guilt and jump to my feet. He screamed at me this morning when I tried to tell him that I've been too tired and home late from work all week. I was looking forward to trying to sleep in an extra hour and instead woke up feeling very panicked. I hate that I'm here sobbing over dishes and now have to get dressed and go back to work, feeling incredibly shitty.
I'm sure we're not the first couple to have this fight, does anyone have any advice? Is it unreasonable for me to ask him to be patient with me and allow me until the weekend to clean? I'm not sure what else to do.
TLDR; What are some tips to stop dishes and laundry from causing arguments in a relationship? Specifically when one person works at home and one works in an office?

2023.06.08 15:56 _fortunefaded_ 20 Hour Layover in EWR Suggestions

I am in the starting stages of planning a trip in January, which will have a 20 hour layover in Newark.
This would be in the first week of January, and I am looking into if it would be worth to visit NYC during this layover. As of right now, the flight would land in Newark at 12:30PM, and I am planning on getting a hotel near the airport. I am thinking that by the time I get out of the airport and checked in at the hotel, it will be 3PM. If I take a train to the city, I am guessing I would likely get there by 4PM (getting to the station, catching a train which seems to be a 30 minute train ride).
I know it isn't much time, so I think I will likely just visit the Rockefeller Center for a tour, and grab a meal somewhere around there. If it is nice weather, maybe take walk to Central Park.
The main thing I was wondering was how likely it is to have a nice view that time of year from the Top of the Rock? And if the weather isn't great, what suggestions you have to experience a bit of NYC, but indoors.

2023.06.08 15:47 Lost_Helicopter2518 What is your opinion on a sim browser game?

The idea is there is a -infinite number of positive numbers in Javascript to +infinite number of positive numbers of tiles. Each tile cost x amount of money, which increases based on the value of nearby properties.
You can build an apartment or a tall tower, where additional floors cost more money exponentially. You are able to view the insides of the apartment/tall tower. You can also build gardens to increase the number of tax revenue you get from nearby buildings etc, so it's like sims city.
You can create your own world, and invite others (this will be developed in Phase 2). Your friend who is invited can also buy their own tiles etc. You can share a tile with your friend, with both getting 50% tax revenue each. You can also visit other players world.
There is no objective in this game, it is for people who like to build cities and see it grow. The replayability comes from the fact that you need money, so you can't constantly build. But I don't want users to wait too long, so it is not so brutal that you have to wait 1-2 hours to build a single house far away. This is to make sure the server does not get overloaded.
All of this will be build using Javascript, hosted either locally first, then migrate over to AWS if there is a demand.
I don't know if people will like this game in a browser and come back, but personally I will like to play it.

In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has gone from man to myth to legend. At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam, and so on. As
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we acknowledge everyone: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There are also some Easter eggs in there, too. So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term. only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero. And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel, or otherwise
"By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two-hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.

2023.06.08 15:27 DandelionOpus Against the Day Pt 1 - Thoughts and notes of a first reading for discussion.

Hi Folks,
I have started Against the Day at long last. Coming from a Pynchon hiatus since reading Inherent Vice a few years ago, along with many aborted attempts at Mason and Dixon and Vineland here and there. I just realised, to some existential dread, that it has been 8 years since I read Gravity’s Rainbow. Being 18 and trying to seem smart I pushed myself through it having no clue how to parse it and looking on equations that, at most, looked cool. I can’t remember much of the bizarre experience except for Rocketman, kink dungeons and Byron the Bulb, but it spurred on that Pynchon obsession. Now, instead of reading for a dissertation, I seemed to be absorbed now into Against the Day in a way I haven’t with Pynchon’s works before. Having just finished Part 1 and written copious notes, I feel compelled to write an essay, out of term-time, drawing together some of the themes as I see them so far. If it sparks off any thoughts, I would love the discussion.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light
One obvious key theme is that of light; how it works, its properties, its power for illumination and occlusion. From the epigraph, it seems to point to the night, darkness, the absence of light as the base state. In this, light illuminates the day, almost creating it. This immediately gives a view to the most intuitive aspect that the light symbolises in its guidance, guiding Merle and Dally down the roads and towards the Horizon, lighting the way of the Chums to the centre of the White City.
But what comes to the fore for me is how light is portrayed in its more complex aspects. Light, as a fundamental part of reality, and how we perceive it, is as much subject to control and shaping, lighting the way to a spectacle and the ‘truth’. Just as light guides the way of some down a certain road to their destiny, so too does it guides the ways down the rationalised grids of Chicago to the killing floors. In the explorations of the World’s Fair, an exhibition of the virtues of American progress and technology, the light illuminates the ‘White City’ at its centre, obscuring those who dwell in its margins and those left in its wake after its dismantled. The light at its centre illuminates a central constructed truth and narrative that excludes some as much as it guides others. This truth, like light, is similarly subject to shaping with Vibe wanting to undermine the progress promised at the fair, of the free electrical network, in its impact on the ‘world’ or the economy, that gives him his prestige and power. This exhortation of progress and technology, and the narrative of the power of America, the West and Capitalism it represents is the façade of a unified whole; a cohesive truth otherwise fractured within modernity.
This underlying fracturing of modernity points to the anxieties of the Aetherists. The want for light, as a fundamental aspect of reality, to be situated in a continuous whole is a want for that precarious comfort. For it to be discrete, fractured quanta, like all modern identities, selves and truths evokes a malaise seen once the Michelson-Morley experiment is done. This belief, in light and the unified stable truth is reflected in the religious devotion and fanaticism about the powers of light. Like the believers in the currents of the time, in the truth of progress and capitalism, the belief in the light gives them an uncritical view, unable to see past the façade. The experiment looks at another reality, past the spectacle they crave, risking to plunge light itself into fragments.
The power of light in constructing the truth is mirrored in how this truth is controlled and enforced. With references to the light of surveillance and the shining of light on things. As the Chums shine a light on Merle and Chevrolette’s ‘deviance’ they are forced back into the woods and shadows before coming back into the day done up and respectable. The Chums moving through the Fair move towards its central illuminated ‘safety’, its policed boundaries and shaped centre, away from the darker edges inhabited by those excluded and marginalised by its truth. To be able to construct the truth and enforce it through light gives further impetus to control light itself. The Aetherists posit that light is a finite resource that must be captured by nations as if like water rights. Vibe similarly looks to undermine technologies that may provide light and electricity to the masses for free, enforcing scarcity.
There are moments with Merle and Webb where other aspects of the light come to the fore. Its other control strategies, and its potential to assert other truths. In Merle’s case, in his interest in alchemy and photography, he mentions the power to redeem light from metals and photographs. In metals, specifically silver, Merle points to the imperatives that he receives, evoking the light of currency, as fictions in embodying a measure of exchange value that provides imperatives for Merle and Dally’s constant moving from job to job. In photography, the capture of light and life into captured moments evokes some notion of the capturing of the day; the day, otherwise, capturing the moments of many millions into its control. But at the same time, there are other potentials and possibilities. In Merle’s risqué photography undertaken with Chevrolette, there are moments to capture life outside of the ‘light’, deviating from the respectable truth of the day. With metals, there is recognition of how to transform their light as money into light as explosive. This then ties to Webb Traverse. In recognising the power of light brought by explosions and its power to break through the occlusion of the domination of the Capitalist ruling-class. This however is similarly accompanied with a certain obsession and belief, an obsession with the smell of dynamite and the belief in the religious justifications given by Rev Moss Gatlin. As well, the intentional use of explosions by owners are used to justify reprisals on the workers and unions as the ‘Beasts that Did This’. The light of explosions can similarly be used and shaped by the powers that be to further their truth, narratives and power. Does this already point to the issues of the political terrorism pursued by Webb and Gatlin? Will their want to use the light be a dead end? It will not guide them to a promised future but will instead be coopted and used against them. Is the real potential for countermovement to be found in the shadows? On the new frontier?
Frontiers
In many ways frontiers represent the possibilities of new worlds, new ways of doing things. This is mythologised in the Old West and expansion of America that, however, ignores its accompaniment of extreme violence and exploitation as new possibilities were consolidated into the way of things. By the time late 19th century this frontier no longer remains. Vanderjuice points to a frontier you could find, stand on looking both east and west. But with the consolidation of American Capitalism, where once wild bison roamed the plains, now cattle and humans are heralded down lit rationalised grids to be killed and used, their deaths fodder to tourists of progress and the light. With the frontier lost, the light bends back on what is consolidated – in killing the animals and humans once free. Franz Ferdinand in not having buffalo to hunt settles for genocidal intentions towards Hungarians. Colonialism and imperialism come home to roost later in the 20th century.
But then, there feels like nods to the new frontier, the shadows. In the shadows of the worlds fair, there are those are marginalised and ignored. In this, new frontiers remain. Places outside of the control, the system and the light-truth. Some want to shine light on this space, to extend the control over the anarchists amassing in darkened halls. At the same time, Vibe seeks to control the technologies that will extend that, and so potentially allowing those frontiers to remain, potentials of new worlds to be worked out. ‘It is always night, otherwise we wouldn’t need light’ – not an anxiety, but a fundamental base state. Realities are occluded by the light shaping a narrative and the day, the spirit of the times. In the darkness are possibilities, potentials for a new world that are repressed and ignored. Other truths and alternate realities can be asserted; the truths of the exploitation of workers and ethnic minorities, the ruthlessness of capitalism and the bourgeois lies of liberty and equality.
It is also seen that those is pursue the light actively seem less able to see these shadows. They pursue the truth constructed and enforced and are unable to see through them in hope for cohesive truths, largely given by those with power to define the message and narrative. This narrative is to be illuminated at the Worlds Fair, a spectacle of light that heralds progress and a future already written for us. This façade gives hope to some, like Dally – glittering lights guiding the way to her mother. But reality is seen in the drift of exiles over the plains, like them. And those left behind to dismantle its edifice. Some characters on the borders of these states. Webb poking holes in the lies of freedom as he toils in dark mines but drawn to the light of explosions masking perhaps what could be gained from the shadows. Kit, is taught by his father, but is drawn to the light of electricity, the light of a life as one of Doc Tesla’s boys, so much that he accepts the funding of Scarsdale Vibe and his promise of the future. But in the shadows, a new frontier is found, holding possibilities of new worlds being lived by marginalised working people, toiling in dark mines, and cleaning up after the temporary exhortation of modern progress and technology is dismantled and burned. If the White City is an edifice of white capitalist American hegemony, it shows how fractured modernity always requires suturing into some truth that can be controlled. The light of its centre attempts to do so, but it cannot cover everywhere and can never be given out for free, it will always create those frontiers and margins where its light cannot shine on and unroot. Where other truths may be understood and asserted.
The Chums of Chance
But as the Chums stand on the volcanic island they are sent to, the light of the day is so bright that it blinds them, as if in the heart of diamond. The light is concentrated to the point it occludes their vision. In looking at the Chums, it makes sense that they represent this focal point. As ideal representations illuminated in books, they are concentrated fictions of this light and truth. Even with the political and personal insubordination of Darby and Chick, they cannot see outside of it truly.
From the first moment with the Chums, in their place as characters in an adventure book series, they provide a fiction representing the ideal of the American boy at the turn of the century, and perhaps a wider ideal required to uphold this status quo. Within their group, Lindsay reinforces norm of good dress, language, patriotism, and education, looking down on the ‘undesirables’; gamblers, the badly raised. Gesturing to the valorisation of an upper-middle class boys ideal, they position themselves in opposition to the ‘evil’ anarchistic working classes. In their bemusement at those in the margins of the worlds fair, and of those from other countries, they exhibit this superiority and wider American exceptionalism and nationalism. In this however, they are not just embodiments of these ideals and values but actively reinforce them internally through their strict hierarchy and enforce them outwardly. As the big eye that descends from the sky to catch Merle and Chevrolette in their deviance from the respectable norms of society, in their surveillance of the Worlds Fair with the White City Investigations and their work with the interior ministry of Mexico against its subversives, they help construct and uphold the truth as epitomised in the White City; the dazzling light they are at the centre of. In helping states and private detectives enlisted by oligarchs, under orders from a shadowy organisation above them, or the author of their stories. These orders are then carried out through the logistical services manned by countless voiceless labourers quietly seen filing in and out with the instruments used to measure Tesla’s experiments.
As the Wiki points to, one point that is fascinating is the Chums malaise and depression in between their adventures, or ‘in between their books’. In between their orders and adventures, they fall into alcoholism in dingy rooms, almost rapidly ageing and decaying, at least spiritually. This lack of meaning or purpose in not having orders show how the ideal is rudderless without something further to conform to and enforce. With no adventure to go on, the Chums have no life or identity to fall back on. The ideal they represent is ultimately hollow and vacuous. They are fully conformed to the whims of the power that creates them, fully blinded by the light, and hindered from escape to the shadows for then they would truly not exist.
Against the Day and its other threads
These themes in some ways all come together in allusions to the title; against the day, giving back to the day, sufficient unto the day. In this the day means what? The spirit of the times and the current moment? The night illuminated by the light to create the daytime itself? The Worlds Fair almost shows this day’s reinauguration, a truth constructed, guiding one to the future and the centre in the spectacle. The day is coopted. Some accept it, give back to it and pay their tithings as Tesla puts it. Others give it all their hopes, believe in its promises in part, in its guiding light. Others are against it, against the day that is proclaimed, against the spirit and its light – shaped to mystify what is really going on. The day as the illusion.
Those who ride against it, the workers, and the anarchists. While Webb pokes holes in the lies of the bourgeoisie he perhaps falls into the days spirit all the same with the belief in the light and his ability to shape it himself. The battle for the light, is it a losing game?
The Chums take the day by storm, ride its waves of Aether and solidify it in the ideal. The good American boys enforcing the day, watching for those deviating from it and righting themselves when they do too. But this ideal is forever unstable, when they do not have a day to fight for, an area to conquer or a consolidated population to enforce the ideal onto, they become adrift, having no life or meaning outside it, becoming invisible and fictions, in an inverted sense to their usual being. Are they a manifestation of capitalism itself? The ideal it pretends to? The entrepreneurial crew supported by countless voiceless labourers with pretentions to their modernity, freedom within their strict hierarchy, given the newest technology to bore through even the earth itself. Spurred onto constant movement by orders of its own internal logic; the Chums must be given their orders, and so they move again – repeat ad nauseam.
With this, these major threads are then crosscut with others I have trouble cohering together just yet. Curious of the character of Scarsdale Vibe, the robber baron archetype. With the globe at the end of his cain, situated in the first wave of globalisation, he holds the world wherever he goes, hiding a bullet underneath it. Seemingly undermining Tesla at the start to funding him the next, capture and co-option? Or the brothers traverse, kits substitution and connection to the Twin Vibes.
“Sure, and isn’t that just the class system for ya? Eternal youth bought with the sickness and death of others.”
I am also taking in the nods to the extradimensional experiences of those such as Kit, Miles Blundell, Lew Basnight and Foley Walker. Seeing or hearing the invisible, versus the visible, dark versus the light. The other frontiers of the invisible and unilluminated? – of electromagnetism, the Chums existence as fictions, the daily unseen minutia or the markets respectively. New possibilities, alternate realities as diffuse as those in the shadows. With a minor adjustment here and there what would happen?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps I tend towards the political and sociological as per my academic interests. My understanding of the scientific aspects of Pynchon’s writing plays pretty hard off of pop-science videos watched on YouTube at 1 in the morning. But it is exhilarating at least to be at a point of taking in a work such as this, not just as a bizarre experience, but as imparting some encyclopaedic knowledge I can perhaps make sense of, at least at this early stage.

2023.06.08 15:24 SapiosexualGuy 28 [M4F] india/anywhere - honest detailed bio [relationship]

I'm a hopeless romantic deeply thoughtful guy. i could become your lifelong soulmate , provided you put in a bit of effort to understand me. I want to know you deeply from within. Do you have the courage to talk freely and be open about who you really are ? We all have shortcomings and issues. Acceptance is important.
I'm eventually looking for a serious long term relationship but I understand a lifelong commitment can be hard to promise or expect. So, I don't mind taking things slow, starting from a friendship with some fun chats and affection / intimacy. But i would like to discuss about the practicalities and feasibilities at some point in our conversation , especially if incompatibilities or geographical barriers are involved that can make it hard for us to be with each other. And then, we can gradually develop that emotional connect and liking for each other as we talk but yet not rush into commitment until we are sure of our decision.
People outside India are welcome too. LDR is fine with me ( i can move to your country). Long distance makes the final meet even more romantic as we travel across the world to be with each other. I'd be so happy if you visit me and learn about Indian culture from me.

Some Essential Info About Me

I was into software development and even did some stock trading on the side. Tried developing my own game as a hobby project. I didn't learn much in college. I was a self taught app developer. Self-employed. I'm not quite settled or established yet, but have enough to make ends meet. But eventually, I found I need support in life. It's difficult to work alone without a business partner or a romantic life partner. So I've just lost motivation to work since past few years. Also because of my family environment. My father hasn't been working since a decade, so I never had a role model growing up who could inspire me to be diligent, disciplined and help me find opportunities.
And I've realized lately that my motivation is more towards finding love. It's like a fuel I need in order to continue to perform. So I'm focusing on that first because I know I can't have my heart in my career if my mind is craving for something else. Finding a loving partner is both a need for me and the foremost thing on my bucket list. And finding consistent compatible women who are self aware and clear about what they want has been hard for me. It often ends in a few weeks. Or converts into a platonic friendship. But if I can't find romantic love, then I hope I atleast can find a true platonic unconditional love. And once I do, I will have the energy in me to realize my potential in the career aspect too.
I've never had a relationship, so you'll be my first.
Physical: height is six feet ** , I'm average build , slightly **muscular. Fair skin but not white, more like wheatish. Black hair. Cute. I get mixed responses. Some women like my looks, while some ghost after seeing my pics. ( in case you feel unattracted, just tell me bluntly 😅. I appreciate straightforwardness)

My Personality

I really like being a support and best friend to anyone, even if relationship doesn't work out between us. I believe in honesty, kindness, fidelity, privacy, empathy. I am straightforward in talks, i hate mind games, you don't need to be over-polite . Be blunt and straight with me please.
I think i'm assertive and i openly express how i feel and i want you to do the same. If you keep things bottled in, you'll be at discomfort. I want you to share your feelings & thoughts with me in a direct way and be as comfortable while talking , as if i'm your best friend.
I'm an ambivert because i feel introvert with people i don't really connect with and extrovert otherwise. My MBTI type (can't say if it is still the same) is ENTP.

My Interests and Hobbies

talking to people, listening to their issues and helping out, playing sports, especially those involving teamwork, i really want to collaborate eventually to solve problems the world faces. I am altruistic but self-centred too.

Affection & Intimacy

These are results of my love language test :
40% Acts of Service
20% Quality Time
18% Physical Touch
12% Receiving Materialistic offerings
10% Words of Affirmation
I like to give hugs every few hours. I believe i have a high drive. I am a sapiosexual, means attracted to intelligence. I adore your brain. While I'm not a demisexual, overall, I think it's the emotions and love which makes it all the more fulfilling. I like giving pleasure as much as receiving. I also can adapt to my partner's nature. So, I am dominating if they like me to lead and take control but I can be submissive too.

Who I’m Looking for

A woman anywhere on the Earth (if you can't relocate, i will ) who is preferably around my age (but I'm flexible) , any race. I'm open minded about your views of god, life philosophy. religion etc and you should be tolerant too. I'd prefer though that you follow a middle ground between a religious zealot and a hardcore nihilist. I do believe our existence and life has a purpose. But even if we don't align in our spiritual beliefs now, we may become like-minded as we talk and understand each other. We need to be receptive to new ideas and alternate viewpoints and rational / logical.
I value love and intelligence above everything else, so even if you are depressed, don't have confidence in your beauty, have some mental health issues, are not able to get over a break up, still i'd like to atleast get to know you , be your friend and give it a chance.
I feel people who have faced failures are actually wiser, people who have experienced depression before are mature and those who have suffered loss in the past are more emotionally stronger. I'm looking for a loving heart and beautiful soul. Physical attraction is important , but not the main thing i look for.
I don't smoke, drink, take any drugs, and i'd prefer if you don't as well.If you do, i won't pressurize you to change your lifestyle completely for me but I'd want you to put in an effort to abstain from that. I understand addictions are tough to deal with. But occasional indulgence is fine.
I also don't care about your income. You may be a college dropout , unemployed , that's alright. But i need you to be hard working and diligent.
In this overpopulated world, it doesn't make ethical sense for us to have kids. And a secondary reason is they deserve lot of time, attention and resources which we may not be able to provide with our life situations. I don't want to become the cause of why their upbringing may get messed up. That's why I have a preference towards being childfree.

Communication

I am open towards voice calls too whereas video calls only after some weeks . You don't need to send a pic right away but you can ask for mine after we chat for some hours . I don't abandon people abruptly , i'd let you know if i wish to discontinue talking. I'm also transparent about whoever i'm speaking to. I will never cheat on you , lead you on , keep you as a backup option , etc. You are free to explore your dating options until we become exclusive. I encourage you to talk to other people too.
If two lonely people get together, we can dispel away the loneliness.

2023.06.08 15:24 wqeu24 I feel my current manager is targeting me, and recent kept me from going in break within the state mandated time, along with having me sit with HR as they asked about my medical history

We got a new manager at my job a few months ago, and with any new boss I am careful to start on a good foot and not cause issues.
That being said, when being asked by her about issues in the branch, I’ve been honest and told her what I thought. This didn’t seem to line up with her few points, and in one meeting, upon telling her I believed we were understaffed, she looked right at me, and said she felt differently, and she make “shake things up”.
There was also a time where she asked me to come in early, and I denied, saying I just flat out won’t, and I feel since then she’s had a very negative view on me to the point I feel targeted.
Recently though, the big that that has me extreme bothered and questioning if I should talk to someone, is on a day I was not feeling well, she called me into her office with HR on the phone, who proceeded to ask me what was wrong, i mentioned I wasn’t feeling well and a little anxious, the HR rep then asked if “that’s an ongoing issue” and if I was “seeing a primary care for this issue”. I declined both questions.
I then was asked if I had anything going on in my personal life, then finally “are you under the effects of alcohol or drugs” which I shut down with a clear no.
This went on for the whole work day in and out her office with HR, to the point I didn’t go on my break until 6 hours into my shift. Which, to my knowledge, breaks NH state law.
I just don’t know who to talk to, or what to do. It’s a very distressing thing, as I respect myself too much to take this targeted abuse but also, I need this job to pay for college.

2023.06.08 15:15 galaxybomb [TotK] Three primary criticisms with the story of Tears of the Kingdom

Note, this will include major story spoilers for ToTK and likely other Zelda games

Before I say anything, I want to clarify that I absolutely loved Tears of the Kingdom. I went into the game completely blind, only having seen the very first trailer and luckily avoiding any major spoiler content of gameplay or story. This game was incredible to me and every step of the way I was super interested in how the story would develop and connect to other things. Now that I have finished the game and watched the final cutscenes, having completed all Main Story quests, there are a few things left open, unanswered, or avoided that definitely add a bit of disappointment. No game is perfect, obviously, but in my opinion, a few small changes would have made things feel a bit more satisfying when playing through the story.

  1. The least significant, but still apparent, is the disconnect between this story and other Zelda games. From a surface view, you would expect this to be the Ganondorf we all know and love/hate, connected directly to Ocarina of Time, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, etc. But this cannot be the case. In some sense, the Dragon Tear cutscenes could be seen as a 'retelling' of Ocarina of Time as there are many similarities and clear references, such as Ganondorf's vow of fealty to the king of Hyrule. And it's very clear that the opening of the game is nudging you hard by using Rauru's name out of context to make you think of the original Sage of Light. But all of these are references, nothing more. This is a completely different Ganondorf, and this Hyrule is a completely different Hyrule. Now like I said before, this isn't that significant of a critique. It's a little disappointing to be nudged by the game over and over with very distinct references to past games and then have them not be significant at all, but it wasn't that impactful.
  2. What I think is much more significant is the disconnect between this story and its predecessor, Breath of the Wild. There is a big difference between having a disconnect within the whole series and having a huge gap when this is the direct sequel. An ambiguous amount of time has passed between the two that is never stated. The world has changed but not that much. The castle is still ruined, there's plenty of recovery still ongoing, but the exact time since the Calamity is never stated as far as I'm aware even though this would be a very burning question on everyone's mind, not to mention how long it was between the Upheaval itself and when Link wakes up- because this seems to be quite a while as well given that Kakariko is already a tourist attraction with the Ring Ruins. No comments of 'Link, you and Zelda have been missing for X time' or anything along those lines, it's glossed over even though it feels like it would be significant information to learn. The total time from BoTW seems to be 'about 6-10 years or so' given Maddison's seeming age, but it's never clear what was before the upheaval and what was after. In addition, there are some very big oddities in how the story connects to Breath of The Wild. There is a school teaching about the very real Calamity that just happened, but the students have to be given proof of the events. So they were not alive or aware during the events, and their parents or townsfolk don't mention it at all? Not to mention that almost all signs of shiekah tech, the shrines, Divine Beasts, Guardian corpses, etc have all but vanished with no trace whatsoever. The only designs that are similar seem to be nods to the last game such as the Ancient Blade items. I would be perfectly okay with any kind of handwave of this information like 'The divine beasts disappeared after their energy was spent on defeating Calamity Ganon' or 'The Shrines and Towers buried underground again since their task was complete' etc etc, but there's nothing at all, so much so that it seems on purpose. Finally, the way that characters interact with Link, the hero that just saved literally the whole world not that long ago, is really weird. A ton of people don't recognize him that should, while others do? The clearest example is Hudson and Bolson. Hudson and Rhondson recognize and are appreciative toward Link as he canonically helped with Tarrey Town it seems, but the other individuals in Tarrey Town don't seem to acknowledge him at all. And Bolson in Lurelin Village doesn't even acknowledge their connection at all even though Link canonically bought a house from him, shared it with Zelda, and helped his worker create the biggest construction company in Hyrule. I get that the game has to be a little bit welcoming towards new players but the way it is handled is really odd. It gives the sensation that this is some kind of alternate universe or some timeline shenanigans have occurred from Zelda's time jump, but the fact that all of it is realized through empty space and nothing is pointed out specifically is really odd. The complete disappearance of Kass save for a small reference is also an oddity. It makes me think they'll pull out a Champion's Ballad style DLC to answer a lot of these questions, which would make me a bit frustrated given how they're kind of significant.
  3. Finally is the disconnect between ToTK's self-contained story and its open ended gameplay. This one is really hard to fix without making drastic changes to the game, so really it is just a flaw with telling a very focused story in such an open, free game. The story pushes you in very specific direction, but a lot of the time has no way of recovering if you break its order leaving a lot of question marks until you hit a certain story flag and realize 'oh, I had to do this first.' As an example, I did a lot of the Geoglyphs really early because I was very interested in how the story would develop and realized about halfway through that Zelda was the Light Dragon. Once I got all the stories I acquired the Master Sword, and the whole sequence was absolutely beautiful. I Also found Mineru and the Spirit Temple before completing a few other Sages purely on accident. I flew into the thunderdome, missed my mark, and stumbled through the darkness only to find myself on the end of the island chain, where I activated the sequence and went along with the story until I got Mineru's vow. It was amazing and I was in awe that there was this secret 5th dungeon hidden outside the path of the story. However, since I did these two things 'out of order', it caused a lot of weirdness with the story sequence. For example, I was frustrated with the situation in Kakariko and not being able to access the Ring Ruin because Link already knows where Zelda is and that this Zelda is an imposter. Even without the Master Sword sequence, it feels like Link is a total dummy for essentially chasing around Puppet Zelda with the expectation that she's real when we are shown over and over again through the memories and the Sage sequence that she is in the past. Now obviously, none of this matters if you play through the game in its intended progression, but that's really hard to do in an open world game a lot of the time? I was expecting that after the 4 Sages, I would take the fight to Ganon, so I avoided Hyrule Castle once I completed that sequence until I was ready. Little did I know that I had to go through Hyrule Castle first to progress the story enough to unlock the Ring Ruins and find the proper story sequence for Mineru (Which was a really hilarious sequence given the fact that she was there the whole time in robot form listening to Purah and the others figure out there's a 5th sage.) I did my best to follow the story without breaking anything, and it felt like my knowledge and Link's knowledge were significantly different in a way that felt too big to ignore, which nagged at me for the latter half of the playthrough.

Overall, this game is incredible and a huge achievement in both a self-contained Zelda story and open world exploration game, but I just wanted to share my thoughts on certain aspects that I believe could have been touched on a bit more. None of them ruined my enjoyment of the game, but for a lot of my playtime I was expecting certain things given its nature as a sequel that were left open by the end, which was weird. I would be very interested to hear people's thoughts both positive and negative- hearing other perspectives or theories is always a fun time. Thanks for reading!

2023.06.08 15:11 HX56Music r/AirRaidSirens Blackout - June 12->14 2023 - Effects and Reasoning

Hello everyone,
Today's announcement is a very important one, and relies around a protest we'll be taking part in for the benefit of the Reddit Community. On May 31st, 2023, Reddit announced changes to their API pricing, which has multiple negative affects for everyone on Reddit, both users and moderators. This link shows a good summary of the effects that this price change will create, but I'll explain a few of the major ones below. It is important to know that we're not the only ones protesting, our community is joining over 800 currently involved communities in a 48 hour protest in aim of getting better conditions around API usage.
The changes to API pricing will being July 1st 2023, killing all 3rd party apps that use the API. Some well known examples of these apps are Apollo, Narwahl, and RedditIsFun. The price increase that Reddit is imposing is simply way too high for these small companies to be able to continue providing these services, even though many individuals use them.
Some 3rd party apps are also available to assist the blind with accessibility. These apps can help with reading text aloud, increasing text size, and changing contrast to name a few features. With this new pricing change, these apps cannot continue to provide this valuable service, essentially removing all vision impaired people from accessing Reddit. Blind has released a discussion highlighting the main implications of this change for their community which I encourage you all to read.
A little closer to home, our moderation team within AirRaidSirens uses a collection of 3rd party moderation tools to help us keep the community clean and safe for everyone. This already takes a lot of time for us to do daily, and when the tools we use frequently will no longer be available, our volunteer role will become even harder at the expense of time and effort.
To summarise, the subreddit will go private from 00:00AM 12/06/2023 -> 00:00AM 14/06/2023 - AEST Time-zone. During this time, posting content, posting comments, and viewing the subreddit will be unavailable. Whilst this does seem like a dramatic change, it's one that's necessary for every community on this platform to do. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and we hope you understand why we have chosen to join this protest. Until then, keep posting and commenting as usual, and after the protest we'll see you all back here to resume our regular activities!
As usual, please send us a ModMail with any questions you may have regarding this, we're happy to help explain anything in more detail.

2023.06.08 15:09 NeedHelpOnceAgain Got a copyright claim and now my videos are not even pulling 20 views?

Hi, last night I uploaded an edit which got copyright claimed. It said it would not affect my short so I went about my business and uploaded some more content. This is the first and only copyright claim I’ve ever had on this channel since creating it two weeks ago by the way. Now my videos usually get anywhere between 400 - 2,000 views. Sometimes higher sometimes lower. Well anyway I’ve uploaded 2 videos today and both have spent hours trying to break 10 views. The last one I uploaded has only been shown to 29 people in their feed. I haven’t done anything different with these videos, they are not of a lower quality and in fact are of a higher quality than my previous videos (objectively speaking) so I’m just a bit stumped. I haven’t had such a poor performance on my videos since the first video I ever uploaded. Could the copyright claim have slowed me down or something? Thoughts?
