2023.06.08 19:21 codie-fz Feeling Stagnant in my Career at 31 - Considering a Part-Time Degree in Electrical Engineering. Thoughts?
I don't come from a traditional background, I would say, since I never went to college. Ever since I was a child, I loved playing around with computers and electronics. I especially enjoyed building stuff with Lego and connecting motors to my models. As a teenager, I started learning to code. After high school, despite having poor grades, my teachers recommended pursuing an academic path. However, my parents insisted that I learn a trade to be on the 'safe side'. So, I became a secretary. Since I knew how to code, I began automating my tasks more and more, which impressed my employer. Eventually, I was promoted to Junior Developer. Years and multiple employers later, I am now 31 years old and working as a Senior Software Engineer.
Everything has been going well, but lately, I feel like I've reached a dead end. I enjoy my job because of the great compensation and freedom it offers, but I constantly feel tired—not because of the workload, but because I'm not learning anything new. It's the same routine every day, and the only way up seems to be transitioning to management, which I have no interest in.
Currently, I'm contemplating reducing my hours and pursuing a part-time degree in electrical engineering at university. I discussed this with my only friend, and he didn't understand at all. He thinks it's a foolish idea and that I should be satisfied with making good money and having free time to play video games and relax. Additionally, he believes I would be an outcast because I'm too old to be in university, surrounded by 20-year-olds. I feel like he doesn't understand me at all.
I'm just wondering, what are your thoughts? Is there something wrong with me? Is my idea really that out of touch?

2023.06.08 19:20 SMODomite Should NewJerseyMarijuana join Reddit Blackout June 12-14
Before we participate in the blackout on June 12-14 we wanted to poll the subreddit to see what your thoughts were. By blackout, we mean the subreddit will go private for a time period and not be able to be viewed/used. We will be going by the majority here and will leave the poll open for the next few days. To let you know why there will be a possible blackout, read more here:
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app
permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from
Apollo to
Reddit is Fun to
Narwhal to
BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th,
many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away
permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because
we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the
goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can
you do?
- Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. This includes not harassing moderators of subreddits who have chosen not to take part: no one likes a missionary, a used-car salesman, or a flame warrior.

2023.06.08 19:19 selinameyer1 Either take out private loans or don't go
Hello everyone,
I am thrilled to share some incredibly exciting news with you all! Just two days ago, I received the news that I have been accepted into my dream master's program in Barcelona, Spain. The level of excitement I'm experiencing right now is off the charts! Allow me to provide a bit of background. I recently graduated from a top 25 university here in the USA, and during my undergraduate years, I managed to make my dream of living in Europe a reality. For the fall of 2021 and the spring of 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two semesters in Prague, Czech Republic. Those months abroad truly transformed my life in ways I can't even begin to express or comprehend. Unfortunately, my time in Europe had to come to an end as my student visa and tourist visa expired, compelling me to return to the US. Since my return, I've been constantly brainstorming ways to make my way back to Europe. During this time I was fully looking for a full-time opportunity to use my degree here in the USA and start making money. I even went through the process of applying and interviewing for jobs in both LA and NYC, but despite going through multiple interviews (four at one company!), I couldn't secure a job.
In a last-minute decision, I decided to pivot and apply for a graduate program with just three days to spare. To my surprise and delight, I was offered an interview and ultimately accepted into the program a few weeks later. Here's where it gets a bit challenging. I am not independently wealthy, and unfortunately, my chosen university abroad isn't eligible for federal loans. Therefore, my only option would be to take out a private loan from a company, amounting to approximately $33K-$35K to cover tuition and living expenses. I must admit that I am about 99% sure I will take out the private loan. As a proud member of Gen Z, my mentality is firm: I will not leave this earth without pursuing and fulfilling my dreams.
Thank you all for taking the time to read my story. If you have any advice, insights, or personal experiences to share regarding student loans, I would greatly appreciate it. Your support means the world to me as I embark on this incredible journey towards my dreams. Wishing you all a fantastic day!

2023.06.08 19:18 iamthatis 📣 Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️
Hey all,
It's been an amazing run thanks to all of you.
Eight years ago, I posted in the Apple subreddit
about a Reddit app I was looking for beta testers for, and my life completely changed that day. I just finished university and an internship at Apple, and wanted to build a Reddit client of my own: a premier, customizable, well-designed Reddit app for iPhone. This fortunately resonated with people immediately, and it's been my full time job ever since.
Today's a much sadder post than that initial one eight years ago. June 30th will be Apollo's last day.
I've talked to a lot of people, and come to claims with this over the last weeks as talks with Reddit have deteriorated to an ugly point, and in the interest of transparency with the community, I wanted to talk about how I arrived at this decision, and if you have any questions at the end, I'm more than happy to answer. This post will be long as I have a lot of topics to cover.
Please note that I recorded all my calls with Reddit, so my statements are not based on memory, but the recorded statements by Reddit over the course of the year. One-party consent recording is legal in my country of Canada. Also I won't be naming names, that's not important and I don't want to doxx people.
What happened initially?
On April 18th,
Reddit announced changes that would be coming to the API, namely that the API is moving to a paid model for third-party apps. Shortly thereafter we received phone calls, however the price (the key element in an announcement to move to a paid API) was notably missing, with the intent to follow up with it in 2-4 weeks.
The information they did provide however was: we will be moving to a paid API as it's not tenable for Reddit to pay for third-party apps indefinitely (understandable, agreed), so they're looking to do equitable pricing based in reality. They mentioned that they were not looking to be like Twitter,
which has API pricing so high it was publicly ridiculed.
I was excited to hear these statements, as I agree that long-term Reddit footing the bill for third-party apps is not tenable, and with a paid arrangement there's a great possibility for developing a more concrete relationship with Reddit, with better API support for users. I think this optimism
came across in my first post about the calls with Reddit.
When did they announce pricing?
Six weeks later, they called to discuss pricing. I quickly put together a small app where I could input the prices and it would output monthly/yearly cost, cost for free users, paid users, etc. so I'd be able to process the information immediately.
The price they gave was $0.24 for 1,000 API calls. I quickly inputted this in my app, and saw that it was not far off Twitter's outstandingly high API prices, at $12,000, and with my current usage would cost almost $2 million dollars per month, or over
$20 million per year.
Why do you say Reddit's pricing is "too high"? By what metric?
Reddit's promise was that the pricing would be equitable and based in reality. The reality that they themselves have posted data about over the years is as follows (copy-pasted from my previous app):
Less than 2 years ago they said they crossed $100M in quarterly revenue for the first time ever, if we assume despite the economic downturn that they've managed to do that every single quarter now, and for your best quarter, you've doubled it to $200M. Let's also be generous and go far, far above industry estimates and say you made another $50M in Reddit Premium subscriptions. That's $550M in revenue per year, let's say an even $600M. In 2019, they said they hit 430 million monthly active users, and to also be generous, let's say they haven't added a single active user since then (if we do revenue-per-user calculations, the more users, the less revenue each user would contribute). So at generous estimates of $600M and 430M monthly active users, that's $1.40 per user per year, or $0.12 monthly. These own numbers they've given are also seemingly inline with industry estimates as well.
Apollo's price would be approximately $2.50 per month per user, with Reddit's indicated cost being approximately $0.12 per their own numbers.
A 20x increase does not seem "based in reality" to me.
Why doesn't Reddit just buy Apollo and other third-party apps?
This was a
very common comment across the topics: "If Apollo has an apparent opportunity cost of $20 million per year, why not just buy them and other third-party apps, as they did with Alien Blue?"
I believe it's a fair question. If these apps apparently cost so much, an easy solution that would likely make everyone happy would be to simply buy these apps out. So I brought that up to them during a call on May 31st where I was suggesting a variety of potential solutions.
Bizarre allegations by Reddit of Apollo "blackmailing" and "threatening" Reddit
About 24 hours after that call with Reddit, I received
this odd message on Mastodon:
"Can you please comment publicly about the internal Reddit claim that you tried to “blackmail” them for a $10,000,000 payout to “stay quiet”?"
Then yesterday, moderators told me they were on a call with CEO Steve Huffman (spez), and he said the following per their transcript:
Steve: "Apollo threatened us, said they’ll “make it easy” if Reddit gave them $10 million." Steve: "This guy behind the scenes is coercing us. He's threatening us."
Wow. Because my memory is that you didn't take it as a threat, and you even apologized profusely when you admitted you misheard it. It's very easy to take a single line and make it look bad by removing all the rest of the context, so let's look at the full context.
I can only assume you didn't realize I was recording the call, because there's no way you'd be so blatantly lying if you did.
As said, a common suggestion across the many threads on this topic was "If third-party apps are costing Reddit so much money, why don't they just buy them out like they did Alien Blue?" That was the point I brought up. If running Apollo as it stands now would cost you $20 million yearly as you quote, I suggested you cut a check to me to end Apollo. I said I'd even do it for half that or six months worth: $10 million, what a deal!
The bizarre thing is - initially - on the call you interpreted that as a threat. Even giving you the benefit of the doubt that maybe my phrasing was confusing, I asked for you to elaborate on how you found what I said to be a threat, because I was incredibly confused how you interpreted it that way. You responded that I said "Hey, if you want this to go away…" Which is not at all what I said, so I reiterated that I said "If you want to Apollo to go quiet, as in it's quite loud in terms of API usage".
What did you then say?
Me: "I said 'If you want Apollo to go quiet'. Like in terms of- I would say it's quite loud in terms of its API usage." Reddit: "Oh. Go quiet as in that. Okay, got it. Got it. Sorry." Reddit: "That's a complete misinterpretation on my end. I apologize. I apologize immediately."
The admission that you mistook me, and the four subsequent apologies led me to believe that you acknowledged you mistook me and you were apologetic. The fact that you're pretending none of this happened (or was recorded), and instead espousing a different reality where instead of apologizing for taking it as a threat, you're instead going the complete opposite direction and saying "He threatened us!" is so low I almost don't believe it.
But again, I've recorded all my calls with you just in case you tried something like this.
Transcript of this part of the call:
https://gist.github.com/christianselig/a9d00a47c99a4d1d3d16bc19e05419c0 Audio of this part of the call:
http://christianselig.com/apollo-end/reddit-third-call-may-31-end.m4a (If you take issue with the call being recorded please remember that I'm in Canada and so long as one participant in the call (me) consents to being recorded, it's legal. If anyone would like the recording of the full call, I'm happy to provide.)
I bring this up for two reasons:
- I don't want Reddit slandering me to internal employees or public people by saying I threatened them when they reality is that they immediately apologized for misunderstanding me.
- It shows why I've finally come to the conclusion that I don't think this situation is recoverable. If Reddit is willing to stoop to such deep lows as to slander individuals with blatant lies to try to get community favor back, I no longer have any faith they want this to work, or ever did.
What is an API or an API request anyway?
Some people are confused about this situation and don't understand what an API is. An API (Application Programming Interface) is just a way for an app to talk to a website. As an analogy, pretend Reddit is a bouncer. Historically, you can ask Reddit "Could I have the comments for this post?" or "Can you list the posts in AskReddit?". Those would be one API request each, and Reddit would respond with the corresponding data.
Everything you do on Reddit is an API request. Upvoting, downvoting, commenting, loading posts, loading subreddits, checking for new messages, blocking users, filtering subreddits, etc.
The situation is changing so that for each API request you make, there's a portion of a penny charged to the developer of that app. I think that is very reasonable, provided, well, that the price they charge is reasonable.
Claims that Apollo is "inefficient"
Another common claim by Reddit is that Apollo is inherently inefficient, using on average 345 requests per day per user, while some other apps use 100. I'd like to use some numbers to illustrate why I think this is very unfairly framing it.
Up until a week ago,
the stated Reddit API rate limits that apps were asked to operate within was 60 requests per minute per user. That works out to a total of 86,400 per day. Reddit stated that Apollo uses 345 requests per user per day on average, which is also in line with my findings. Thats 0.4% of the limit Reddit was previously imposing, which I would say is quite efficient.
As an analogy (can you tell I love analogies?), to scale the numbers, if I was to borrow my friend’s car and he said “Please don’t drive it more than 864 miles” and I returned the car with 3.4 miles driven, I think he’d be pretty happy with my low use. The fact that a different friend one week only used 1 mile is really cool, but I don't think either person is "inefficient".
That being said, if Reddit would like to see Apollo make further optimizations to get its existing number lower, I’m genuinely more than happy to do so! However the 30 day limit they’ve given me after announcing the pricing to when I will start getting charged significant amounts of money is not enough time to deal with rewriting large parts of my app to lower total requests, while also changing the payment model, transitioning users, and ensuring this is all properly tested and gets through app review.
Further, Reddit themselves said to me that the majority of the cost isn't the server, it's the opportunity cost per user, so the focus on 100 versus 345 calls, rather than the cost per user, doesn't sound genuine. At the very least providing even a bit more time to lower usage to their new targets would be feasible if they've historically provided it, and it's not the majority of the costs anyway.
Me: "Because I assume the majority of it isn't server costs. I assume the majority is the opportunity cost per user." Reddit: "Exactly."
Why not just increase the price of Apollo?
One option many have suggested is to simply increase the price of Apollo to offset costs. The issue here is that Apollo has approximately 50,000 yearly subscribers at the moment. On average they paid $10/year many months ago, a price I chose based on operating costs I had at the time (server fees, icon design, having a part-time server engineer). Those users are owed service as they already prepaid for a year, but starting July 1st will (in the
best case scenario) cost an additional $1/month each in Reddit fees. That's $50,000 in sudden monthly fee that will start incurring in 30 days.
So you see, even if I increase the price for new subscribers, I still have those many users to contend with. If I wait until their subscription expires, slowly month after month there will be less of them. First month $50,000, second month maybe $45,000, then $40,000, etc. until everything has expired, amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars. It would be cheaper to simply refund users.
I hope you can recognize how that's an enormous amount of money to suddenly start incurring with 30 days notice. Even if I added 12,000 new subscribers at $5/month (an enormous feat given the short notice), after Apple's fees that would just be enough to
break even.
Going from a free API for 8 years to suddenly incurring massive costs is not something I can feasibly make work with only 30 days. That's a lot of users to migrate, plans to create, things to test, and to get through app review, and it's just not economically feasible. It's much cheaper for me to simply shut down.
So what is the REAL issue you're having?
Hopefully that illustrates why, even more than the large price associated with the API, the 30 day timeline between when the pricing was announced and developers will be charged is a far, far, far bigger issue and not one I can overcome. Much more time would be needed to overhaul the payment model in my app, transition existing users from existing plans, test the changes, and have users update to the new version.
As a comparison, when Apple bought Dark Sky and announced a shut down of their API, knowing that this API was at the core of many businesses,
they provided 18 months before the API would be turned off. When the 18 months came, they ultimately extended it another 12 months, resulting in a total transition period of 30 months. While I'm not asking for that much, Reddit's in comparison is
30 days.
Reddit says you won't get your first bill until August 1st, though!
The issue is the size of the bill, not when it will arrive. Significant, significant charges for the API will start building up with 30 days notice on July 1st, the fact that the bill for those charges being 30 days from then is not important. If you hear that your electricity bill is going up 1,000x and the company tells you, "Don't worry, the bill only comes at the
end of the month", I hope you understand how that isn't comforting.
What would be a good price/timeline?
I hope I explained above why the 30 day time limit is the true issue. However in a perfect world I think lowering the price by half and providing a three month transition period to the paid API would make the transition feasible for more developers, myself included. These concessions seem minor and reasonable in the face of the changes.
I thought you said Reddit would be flexible on the timeline?
That was my understanding as well based on what they said on a call on May 4th:
Reddit: "If there's an entity who's like 'Hey I'm showing really good progress', you know trying to like we're trying to get a contract in place, we're trying to do all that type of stuff, I don't think you're going to see us be like, you know, like overly aggressive on that timeline. And I feel pretty confident about that point by the way based on conversations I've heard internally."
However when asking about more time, such as a 90 day transition period to make the changes, they said:
Reddit: "On the 90-day transition, remember that billing doesn't kick in until July 1. So you won't see your first bill from July until the beginning of August, and it won’t be due until the end of August (It’s net 30 day billing). You do, however, have to sign an agreement to get paid level access on July 1."
Did you explicitly ask Reddit for more time?
Yes, my last email to them (including Steve) said:
In terms of timeline, what concerns me most is the short nature of it before I start incurring costs. I have a large amount of users at price points that I won’t be able to afford to support with 30 days notice. For instance, users who subscribed for a year for $10 six months ago when I had no idea any of this was coming, amounts to $0.83 per month or $0.58 after Apple’s cut. Even if I’m able to decrease my API usage down to the number in your charts, that still puts me in the red for everyone of those users for awhile with no recourse. A situation like this is one that is legitimately making me legitimately leaning toward shutting down the app, but one that I could salvage if given more time to transition from the free API to the paid API.
In prior calls you mentioned that provided I kept communicating and progress was being made, the timeline wasn’t an absolute.
Is that still the case, or is it now the case that the date is set in stone?
That was a week ago and I've yet to receive any further contact from Reddit.
Isn't this your fault for building a service reliant on someone else?
To a certain extent, yes. However, I was assured this year by Reddit not even that long ago that no changes were planned to be made to the API Apollo uses, and I've made decisions about how to monetize my business based on what Reddit has said.
January 26, 2023 Reddit: "So I would expect no change, certainly not in the short to medium term. And we're talking like order of years."
Another portion of the call:
January 26, 2023 Reddit: "There's not gonna be any change on it. There's no plans to, there's no plans to touch it right now in 2023. Me: "Fair enough." Reddit: "And if we do touch it, we're going to be improving it in some way."
Will you build a competitor? Move to one of the existing alternatives?
I've received so many messages of kind people offering to work with me to build a competitor to Reddit, and while I'm very flattered, that's not something I'm interested in doing. I'm a product guy, I like building fun apps for people to use, and I'm just not personally interested in something more managerial.
These last several months have also been incredibly exhausting and mentally draining, I don't have it in me to engage in something so enormous.
Will you sell Apollo?
Probably not. Maybe if the perfect buyer came along who thought they could turn Apollo into something cool and sustainable, but I'd rather the app just die if it would go to a company that would turn something I worked really hard on into something that would ruin its legacy.
To be clear: I am not threatening anyone in the previous paragraph.
Reddit states that the Twitter comparison is unfair
Reddit stated on the first call that they don't want to be like Twitter:
"I think one thing that we have tried to be very, very, very intentional about is we are not Elon, we're not trying to be that, we're not trying to go down that same path. [...] We are trying to do is just use usage-based pricing, that will hopefully be very transparent to you, and very clear to you. Or we're not trying to go down the same path that you may have seen some of our other peers go down."
They now state that the comparison of how close their pricing comes to Twitter is an unfair one, and that when they said that above, they were apparently referring not to the pricing, but to the decision Twitter made to ban third-party apps at a rule level, not a pricing level.
I think regardless of whatever their intent/meaning behind the comparison to Twitter was, the result is the same: the pricing will kill third-party apps, just as Twitter did.
I said this to Reddit, and they responded that they don't think Twitter's pricing is unreasonable, and that if anything, if Twitter reversed the rule about third-party apps, they would probably increase the prices as well.
Just to be clear about how wrong and out of touch that is, without naming names, a formerly very, very high up person at Twitter messaged me on Twitter and said:
"The Reddit api moves are crazy. I’m not sure what choices you have but to move to another network. That pricing is designed to prevent apps like yours forevermore."
So to be clear, even this person thinks this pricing is unreasonable. I do too.
Have you talked to CEO Steve Huffman about any of this?
I requested a call to talk to Steve about some suggestions I had, his response was "Sorry, no. You can give
name-redacted a ping if you want."
I've then emailed that person (same person I've been talking to for months) suggestions approximately one week ago about how Apollo could survive this, and I've yet to receive a response.
Do I support the protest/Reddit blackout?
Abundantly. Unlike other social media companies like Facebook and Twitter who pay their moderators as employees, Reddit relies on volunteers to do the hard work for free. I completely understand that when tools they take to do their volunteer, important job are taken away, there is anger and frustration there. While I haven't personally mobilized anyone to participate in the blackout out of fear of retaliation from Reddit, the last thing I want is for that to feel like I don't support the folks speaking up. I wholeheartedly do.
It's been a horrible week, and the kindness Redditors and moderators and communities have shown Apollo and other third-party apps has genuinely made it much more bearable and I am genuinely so appreciative.
I am, admittedly, doubtful Reddit wants to listen to folks anymore so I don't see it having an effect.
Your initial post in April sounded quite optimistic. Are you dumb?
In hindsight, kinda yeah. Many of the other developers and folks I talked to were much less optimistic than I was, but I legitimately had great interactions with Reddit for many years prior to last week (they were kind, communicative, gave me heads up of changes), so when they said they were aiming to have pricing that would be fair and based in reality, I honestly believed them. That was foolish of me in hindsight, and maybe could have had a different outcome if I was more aggressive in the beginning. Sorry. /canadian
(And to be clear, they did indeed say this. They used the word "substantive" and I wanted to make sure we had the same definition of something "having a firm basis in reality and therefore important, meaningful, or considerable")
Reddit: "That's exactly right. And I think, thankfully, the word is exactly the right one. It's going to have a firm basis in reality. I also just looked it up. We're going to try to be as transparent as we can."
Reddit claims they've reached out to developers who were bad users of the API, was Apollo contacted?
On May 31st Reddit
posted a chart of large excess usage by some unlabeled API clients, and stated: "We reached out to the most impactful large scale applications in order to work out terms for access above our default rate limits via an enterprise tier."
To be clear, Apollo was never contacted, and I've been told from someone internally that Apollo is indeed not one of the unlabeled API clients.
The only time that Apollo was reached out to by Reddit in any capacity about usage was late last year when we received an email about a 6 minute period where Apollo's server API usage increased by 35% before lowering again. Despite 35% for 6 minutes being a comparatively small blip (the above post references clients that are over by 500000%), we responded within 2 minutes. We offered to jump on a call with Reddit engineers if they needed an answer ASAP, identified the issue within several hours and Reddit thanked us for the fast investigation.
Full email transcript:
https://gist.github.com/christianselig/6c71608cf617d2f881cd2849325494c1 Claims that Apollo has made no attempt to be a good user of the API
On the call with moderators, Steve Huffman said:
"I don't use the app, so I'll give you the best answer I can -- he does scraping so that he can deliver notifications faster, but has done NO EFFORT to be a good citizen of the internet."
First off, Apollo does no scraping, it's purely through authenticated calls to the API and has checks in place to ensure it stays within Reddit's API rate limits.
I've open sourced the server code to show this.
Secondly, to say we have made no effort is categorically false. I have so many emails reached out to Reddit on multiple occasions expressing concern about and bugs inefficiencies in the API, or ideas on how to improve things, or significant Reddit bugs that made things hard on us. When Reddit has had questions for us, as discussed above, we immediately jumped into action to get an answer as quickly as possible.
Here's an email of me giving a heads up to Reddit of IP address changes on our server:
Me: "With the new change it'll be maybe like, one IP address. This is all obviously still within the API rate limits as the requests are from individual user accounts that have signed in. Again, long story short the result will be more optimized if anything, I just wanted to give a heads up and ensure that it'd be okay if Reddit suddenly saw the server go from a bunch of different IP addresses to a single one which might cause some confusion if I didn't give a heads up."
Me wanting to make sure we were doing everything as best as we could:
Me: "Everything is going well, we just had a few questions about best practices making sure we’re following any suggestions your team has. Is there any way we could poke someone on your team with a few questions we’ve been having and have a tiny back and forth? We were just seeing some elevated response times, and just thought it would be great if we could maybe describe what we’re doing and see if anything seems off/suboptimal."
Me reporting to Reddit that the API has a serious bug in recording rate limits:
We obviously respect the rate limit headers and if a user comes close to approaching it (within 50 requests of the 600 every 10 minutes limit) we stop their requests until the refresh period occurs. However we're seeing some users have very, very weird rate limit headers. Things like "requests remaining: 0, requests made: 17,483, reset: 598 seconds left" which indicates they've somehow made over 17 thousand requests in two seconds which seems hard to believe.
Me suggesting to Reddit improvements that could help improve efficiency of notification API calls:
Me: "So like little stuff like that, where even if there's a streaming client or some way to minimize the calls there, I think it would help us both out enormously."
Further,
when making suggestions to your own employees, they themselves have expressed concern about how terrible the public API is:
Call on January 26, 2023 Reddit: "I cannot tell you how painful it is to use our API. [...] The API needs to change. Like it's just unusable. I am surprised that you're able to build a functional app on it to be honest."
Claims that third-party apps are not interested in talking
Steve: "Why not work with the third party apps? Their existence is not a priority for us. We don't use them. I don't use them. It's a part of our traffic but not a lot, and it's a lot of work on our side to keep them alive. If I have to choose where to put our effort, we're going to focus internally. I'm kind of open to it, but I haven't – and I can't convince you, but I don't get the sense that they want to work with us either."
I'm genuinely not sure where Steve has got the impression that I don't want to work with him. Despite reaching out multiple times and
him declining to talk, I've stated multiple times on calls, literally saying the words "I definitely still want to talk".
Reddit: "What I'm hearing is like, Yeah, great. We have this disagreement on pricing methodology, etc. But any feasible number that we get to, any number that's even in, the zip code of what we're sharing with you is unfeasible from your perspective financially. So it's like arguing around the edges of that price thing is like, it just won't make any sense to you. And I presume also just given the NSFW stuff and the removal of ads that makes it even more trickier." Me: Yeah. I mean, to be very clear, I'm not saying I'm walking away from the negotiation table and taking my basketball and going home and just gonna kick up a storm. That's not my intention at all. I definitely still want to talk. I'm not asking you to lower the price by a hundred times or something. I don't think – depending on what you mean by zip code – I don't think I'm so unreasonable that I'm requiring you to bend over backwards here."
I've also emailed Steve and the other contact directly stating that I'm interested in talking, and including ideas for how we could come to a solution:
Me: "I understand where Reddit's coming from in this. A free API, while appreciated, is not tenable for you especially heading into an IPO, and my only goal here is to come to a solution where we both feel understood. I also hear you that killing third-party clients isn't actually the goal, and in that spirit have been working on how to address your concerns from my end: [...]"
I don't know how you can say I'm not interested in talking when you haven't my most recent email in a week. To say it once more, I was very interested in talking.
On the other side of things, per the transcript, Steve and the other admin on the call don't even know when the discussions with third-party apps began.
Steve: "When did we start talking with them?" AnAbsurdlyAngryGoose: "What month did you first start?" Steve: "FlyingLaserTurtles? Do you remember? April or May of this year." FlyingLaserTurtles: "Maybe late March? But yes."
Claims that Reddit has been talking to developers for months talking about these changes
Steve: "We've been in contact with third party apps for MONTHS, talking about these coming changes."
When you announce that the API will be charging developers, the most important portion of that conversation is
what will be charged, which was not available for almost two months after the initial call. From the time developers were told the price, to the time developers will be subject to the price, is 30 days, not "months". Months would have been very helpful, in fact.
What about existing subscriptions?
I've been talking to my rep at Apple, and over the next few weeks my plan is to release something similar to what Tweetbot did (Paul has been incredibly helpful in all of this) where folks can decide if they want a pro-rated refund on any existing time left in their subscription as Apollo will not be able to afford to continue it, or they can decline the refund if they're feeling kind and have enjoyed their time with Apollo.
For the curious, refunding all existing subscriptions by my estimates will cost me about $250,000.
A nice send off at WWDC
Apollo got mentioned a few times during Apple's 2023 WWDC keynote, even by Craig Federighi himself, and even during the Vision Pro announcement showing Apollo as one of the existing apps compatible with the headset (I'm sorry I won't be able to see that happen).
I was lucky enough to be there in person and it felt incredible. Some folks asked if there was any deeper meaning behind that, and while that would be cool, in all reality these things are so well produced that they've been done for a while now, so I'm sure it's just a coincidence, even if it's a really cool one.
Extra icons
A funny amount of people have reached out wondering about all the extra monthly icons I had queued up for Apollo. I love them, was so excited for them, and I'll make them available immediately for the short time left, but if you're curious here's a screenshot of all of them:
https://christianselig.com/apollo-end/remaining-icons.png We ended up with well over 100 custom icons created by incredibly talented designers, and I'm really sorry to those designers who didn't get to see their work launched in the app (to be clear, don't worry, I paid them all – there isn't some bs "exposure" agreement – but it's fun to have your icon launch and I feel bad!)
When is Apollo's last day? What will happen?
In order to avoid incurring charges I will delete Apollo's API token on the evening of June 30th PST. Until that point, Apollo
should continue to operate as it has, but after that date attempts to connect to the Reddit API will fail.
I will put up an explainer in the app prior to that which will go live at that date. I will also provide a tool to export any local data you have in Apollo, such as filters or favorites.
Thank you
I want to thank a lot of people who have made this last week bearable. First and foremost, the communities, Redditors, and moderators who have reached out in support of third-party apps, making Reddit's gaslighting a lot more bearable in making me feel like at least someone was understanding me and in my corner.
My girlfriend's been absolutely incredible and supportive. This year was our 10th anniversary, and Monday was her 30th birthday. We're down in California for Apple's WWDC and had a bunch of things planned to do for her birthday afterward, and I feel terrible that we're flying home early to deal with all of this instead of making her 30th special. I'll make it up to her.
André Meidoros worked on the Apollo server component with me for the last two years, and it's been an absolute joy to work with a professional who knows so much on that side of things.
The iOS developer community has been unbelievably kind to me over the past several weeks, I've spent the last week with many of them, even staying at an Airbnb with a bunch of them (they ordered me pizza as I wrote this post!), and I've got so many hugs and condolences haha. Specifically want to thank Paul Haddad of Tweetbot/Tapbots/Ivory, Ryan Jones, Brian Mueller, Curtis Herbert, André Meidoros, Quinn Nelson, Paul Hudson, Majd Taby, Ryan McLeod, Phill Ryu, Larry Hryb, Charlie Chapman, Mustafa Yusuf, Adrian Eves, Devin Davies, Jordan Morgan, Yariv Nassim, Will Sigmon, Barry Hershman, Joe Rossignol, Michael Simmons, Joe Fabisevich, my family, and so, so many more.
Also want to thank everyone at Apple who have gone out of their way to be incredibly kind here (I don't know if I'm allowed to name names but you know who you are).
I'll be fine
No bullshit, I'll be fine. Through pure chance last year I spun off my silly Pixel Pals idea into a separate app, and that actually makes good revenue on the side. I also have savings. Recently (like last week) my city had
its worst wildfires in history with over 100 homes destroyed. That's brutal, losing an app is sad, but it's been helpful to me to recognize how much worse it could be just literally down the street from me.
Honestly. Apollo had an incredible run, I met the coolest people, by my last count talked with folks over 15,000 times in our subreddit about Apollo, and raised over $80,000 for my local animal shelter through Apollo. I feel incredibly fortunate.
I think I'll rewatch Ted Lasso though.
Supporting my work
I build a second app called
Pixel Pals that I spun off from Apollo that's thankfully done pretty well and I'll be spending more time on going forward. If you like the idea of digital pets it's a really fun app to check out.

If any media/press folks have any questions, please shoot me an email rather than messaging me on Reddit, I missed a few last week because my inbox was blowing up. My email is

I think I covered everything, but if there's any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer!

2023.06.08 19:16 jaggazz ANNOUNCEMENT: On June 12, 2023 /r/PutAnEggOnIt will be blacked out for at least 48 hours
Hello egg lovers,
The mod team has some news to share with you.
What's going on?
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit. Apps such as
Apollo,
Reddit is Fun,
Narwhal,
BaconReader, etc. will have to pay exorbitant prices to remain functional starting on July 1, 2023. The app developers have already come out and said they will be unable to do so.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing or accessing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite, the use of the old.reddit.com browser interface, and folks with accessibility requirements
such as those who are visually impaired. This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators,
including several of the mods of this subreddit, depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities safe, on-topic, and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th,
many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action. What can you do as a user?
- Complain. Message the mods of /reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app - and sign your username in support to this post.
- Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /ModCoord.
- Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 14th - instead, take to your favourite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
- Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.
What can you do as a moderator?
We hope you understand and support our position! jaggazz on behalf of the mod team

2023.06.08 19:15 sirioos The Art of being Projector
That art is the Art of Recognizing. Like all of the Arts, the key to perfecting is to practice. And in Human Design, we all have in common something to practice. Do you know what that something is? Yup, you guessed it. Following our Strategy and Authority. For adult Projectors, this is one of the most difficult things for us to do. Because we are designed to be conditioned, and our waiting is primarily about the big things in life - it takes a focused determination and dedication to live our designs. As much as we've worked on ourselves and studied every system on the planet, it really takes seven years of deconditioning to live life as ourselves. Cellular renewal takes time. Projectors are very complex beings, with so many different arrangements of possible definitions that can combine to make us who we are in the world. Being the “youngest” or “newest” of the Types, as we only started appearing on this planet in 1781, we are here for a very particular purpose. We are here to Guide. Recognizing what guidance and when by waiting for the invitation and checking with our Authority first, protects us from the deep bitterness that we experience when we act prematurely and are failed to be properly recognized for our gifts. A Projector’s Aura is the only one that penetrates into the core of the other, and in this way regularly exposes itself to the deepest kind of conditioning. Within this functioning lies the source of our Projector gift - to recognize how energy should be applied.
This gift of Recognition moves in two directions. Not only are Projectors gifted with the ability to recognize, we are given attributes that are designed to be recognized. We are magnetic beings, designed to attract attention. It is the frequency of our Aura that draws someone who sees and recognizes us for the particular qualities we carry and thereby invite our guidance into their lives. In fulfilling that recognition, we find our signature of success. When we are operating correctly, we'll be recognized correctly and find that success. How do you know when you are operating correctly? The key for a Projector to find success in life is to have a mastery of a system. In Human Design, it is important for you to recognize the “signposts” or clues that you are either on or off your path to fulfillment. Are you consistently feeling bitterness or success? Do you know what your motivation is or the signs of transference? Are you watching for the signposts of your mind's control over your decision-making process? These are tools Human Design made available to us that are invaluable for informing our Projector process of Awakening to our true nature. The trouble with most adult Projectors is, we have been deeply homogenized and conditioned from birth. Highly susceptible to the pressures to act like the Manifestors or Generators that our parents wanted us to be, we don’t know how to let go of all that and allow ourselves to be Projectors. So how do you "be" a Projector? Many of us are deeply enmeshed in a life we are not well suited for, on the edge of exhaustion and burnout, bitter about the jobs, mortgages and commitments that drain us. How do we live our designs? It all comes back to Strategy and Authority. Only you can take this journey, when you are ready, and you take it alone. As Projectors, we need to learn to wait for the recognition that we are designed for. Projectors have the gift of being able to master systems, and are perfectly equipped to Guide in accordance with the particular characteristics unique to their chart. So it follows that Human Design would be an excellent system to master for those Projectors who are invited and follow their authority to study it. As a Projector, I downsized my lifestyle and let go of everything extraneous to study Human Design. Why? Because I recognized it as an accurate, powerful and practical system that helps people to realize their unique potential. I hope to develop a mastery of Human Design because I’ve tested it and found it to be correct for me. I know it to be rewarding, revitalizing and renewing. I see the hope it's brought to myself and the people I know who've experimented with it, and I want to share that hope with the world. As Projectors, we are recognized, of all the Types, to need to study more than anyone else. That's why Jovian Archive offers an endowment for Projectors to get a discount on products that we feel give you the benefit of information you most need to know.
There is no one more needed to be awake and aware than the Projector, as the guides of our energy. Projector or not, I invite you all to begin or continue your study of Human Design in earnest, to share this knowledge with those who are ready to live out their true nature. Everyone deserves a chance to live out their uniqueness. Regardless of Type, Human Design shows us the way home, to perfect “The Art of Being" ourselves.
By Sirioos inspired from Jovian Archive. Following with manifestor here you will find all 4 types and the community….

2023.06.08 19:14 jackclaver Top LitRPG/GameLit/Progression/Cultivation/Slice of Life Reads
With my update after latest reads...
.
https://fanfiaddict.com/benders-top-litrpg-gamelit-progression-cultivation-reads/ .
With not much “standard” sub-genres in this genre, I’ve went with my own! If you are new to the genre, here’s something that may help you make sense and pick up books to your liking.
What the heck do these sub-genres indicate? GameLit is in general books which have elements which you might have seen or played in a game e.g skill trees, stat sheets etc. These elements may feature to varying extents, but present they will be! Now there are various permutations and combinations on how this will occur in a game and I’ll try to elaborate on some here
LitRPG is a sub-genre of GamLit and probably the catch all. Technically it is to capture books which feature the Role Playing (RPG) elements, but in practical use, LitRPG and GameLit are being used interchangeably.
But then, genres and titles are what we deem it to be. So pay less attention to the classifications and let’s get down to the books themselves.
Post/Apocalyptic Earth Now, this is my favourite sub-genre! As the name indicates, books in this sub-genre takes place in relatively modern Earth. In most books, Earth has been assimilated into a bigger multi-planet universe is ruled by a “system” that implements game elements on all acquired worlds. Now this assimilation is mostly a forced takeover which usually results in death of vast swaths of humanity with the rest forced to adapt and fight for survival. Though the books start off with a ‘apocalypse’, being end of earth as we know now, the stories are post-apocalyptic survival in new Earth.
These are sweeping books which span over multiple geographies of current Earth and often venture out to space and include alien planets and species as Earth-people come to grasp with the macro “System”. It’s closest to epic fantasy and one which would include multiple game genres. You get the RPG elements of MC being forced into a leader of survivors leading them to salvation, RTS elements of MC forced to re-build towns/cities which were destroyed by the apocalypse and First Person Action elements where MC leads the fight against the ‘minions’ one vs one!
Set in Game World These are books where
– Much of the plot happens in a world that has game elements, and/or– Where the MC is from Earth but are transported to the above said magical world having game elements where they have their adventures, trials and tribunals.
Now, these are a [very] close second favourite of mine as they might have many of the features listed in earlier sub-genre, i.e. having RPG elements of MC being forced into a leader leading them to safety, RTS elements of MC forced to re-build towns/cities and First Person Action elements of MC leads the fight against the ‘minions’ one vs one!
Fantasy:
Science Fiction:
Other notable series:
Chaos Seeds by Aleron Kong
Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games [VRMMORPG] This is a set ins current/post-modern earth Earth where MC has access to ‘Total Immersion’ Virtual reality modules which connect directly to MC body/brain and provide a fully real life experience but in-game.I love this because this not only has full fantasy world experience, but may also include a side story of the game AI trying to gain sentience through in-game experiences, which adds a whole new dimension to the story.
Other Notable series:
Good Guys by Eric Ugland
The Gam3 by Cosimo Yap
Limitless Lands by Dean Hengar
New Era Online by Shemer Kuznits
Ripple System by Kyle Kirrin
Progression & Cultivation Fantasy Straight from the
words of Andrew Rowe:
“Progression Fantasy is a fantasy subgenre term for the purpose of describing a category of fiction that focuses on characters increasing in power and skill over time. These are stories where characters are often seen training to learn new techniques, finding ways to improve their existing skills, analyzing the skills of opponents, and/or gaining literal or figurative “levels” of power. Progression in the subgenre title specifically refers to character power progression, not other types of progression (e.g. increasing wealth, noble rank, etc.) that occur in stories.” You’d ideally see defined power levels that a character will have to progress as he travels to his objective.
Fantasy: - Cradle by Will Wight – 9.5/10
- Mark of the Fool by J M Clarke – 9.25/10
- Warformed Stormweaver by Luke Chmilenko and Bryce O’connor – 9.0/10
- Immortal Great Souls by Phil Tucker – 8.0/10
- Arcane Ascension by Andrew Rowe – 8.0/10
- Mage Errant by John Bierce – 8.0/10 *
- The Weirkey Chronicles by Sarah Lin – 7.0/10
\ Mage Errant in my humble opinion is more of mainstream fantasy rather than Progression, but is often listed in here.*
Science Fiction:
- The Way of Etherforging by R.J. Shoke – 9.5/10
Cultivation: Cultivation Books is very similar to Progression, but we see higher degree of influence of Martial Arts where characters progressively get stronger by “cultivating” their own body. Most books are based on or have inspirations from concepts from Wuxia, Xianxia etc, though there are good books which port the same into a western Setting.
\ The books are translated from Chinese and available for free at freewebnovel.com. It certainly is a good translation, but there may be slight awkwardness to the prose, dialogue and naming conventions which takes some getting used to. But give it time and get past it and you’ll get treated to a the ultimate OP MC + epic battles progression fantasy of all time!*
Slice of Life Fantasy Books in this genre are set in a fantasy world and may have added elements of fantasy, GameLit, Progression or Cultivation but the focus is on a contemporary skill/job. e.g. the MC is a farmer or a cook and the plot focus is one day-to-day aspects of the job spiced up with game/fantasy elements. It’s a loveable niche genre that is the epitome of comfort reads guaranteed to put you in a blissful state of mind!
GameLit – Time Travel / Tower Ascension I’m actually clubbing two distinct sub-genres in here. Most of these books involve either time travel and/or climbing a tower with levels of different difficulty to achieve a objective. Each level features varying challenges and difficulty, making this close the game but very interesting nevertheless!
GameLit – Dungeon Core This sub-genre has books where the MC has become/reincarnated as a core controlling a dungeon and has to protect it’s inhabitants against people who want to invade/clear it. Fascinating sub-genre as we have a MC who’s a Dungeon Core and can’t interact with his subjects through normal means and provides a completely different perspective to people-management.
- God of Gnomes by Demi Harper – 8.0/10
- Divine Dungeon by Dakota Krout – 8.0/10
Other Notable Series
Special shout-out to God of Gnomes to it’s scintillating prose making it one of the best in genre!
GameLit – Crafting Based Now these are books purely focused on rafting elements. These are people who create stuff and not directly involved in fights like most other genres. This is a niche genre as these elements are usually included partly in other genres described above, but for enthusiasts, below are books which concentrate purely on crafting and intrigue associated with that (believe me, they are interesting!)
- Fair Quest by Kit Falbo – 8.0/10
- [Book 2 goes on a tangent, but Book 1 is a class self contained read]

2023.06.08 19:12 Andrew-CS 2023-06-08 - Cool Query Friday - [T1562.009] Defense Evasion - Impair Defenses - Windows Safe Mode
| Welcome to our fifty-seventh installment of Cool Query Friday. The format will be: (1) description of what we're doing (2) walk through of each step (3) application in the wild. Yeah, yeah. I know. It's Thursday. But I'm off tomorrow and I want to be able to respond to your questions in a timely manner so we're CQTh'ing this time . Let's roll. This week, we’ll be hunting a Defense Evasion technique that we’re seeing more and more in the wild: Impair Defenses via Windows Safe Mode ( T1562.009). In Microsoft Windows, Safe Mode (or Safeboot) is used as a system troubleshooting mechanism. To quote Redmond: Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. If a problem doesn't happen in safe mode, this means that default settings and basic device drivers aren't causing the issue. Observing Windows in safe mode enables you to narrow down the source of a problem, and can help you troubleshoot problems on your PC. So the problematic part for AV/EDR vendors is this sentence: “ Safe mode starts Windows in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers.” Your Windows endpoint security stack is, without question, driver-based. To make things even more interesting, there is an option to leverage Safe Mode with networking enabled. Meaning: your system can be booted with no third-party drivers running and network connectivity. What a time to be alive. Several threat actors, specifically in the eCrime space, have been observed leveraging Safe Mode with networking to further actions on objectives. An example, high-level killchain is: - Threat actor gains Initial Access on a system
- Threat actor establishes Persistence
- Threat actor achieves Privilege Escalation via ASEP
- Threat actor Execution steps are being blocked by endpoint tooling
At this point, the next logical step for the threat actor is Defense Evasion. If they have the privilege to do so, they can set the system to reboot in Safe Mode with networking to try and remove the endpoint tooling from the equation while maintaining remote connectivity. How do they maintain remote connectivity post reboot... ? The bad news is: even though Windows won’t load third-party drivers in Safe Mode it will obey auto-start execution points (ASEP). So if a threat actor establishes persistence using a beacon/rat/etc via an ASEP, when the system is rebooted into Safe Mode with networking the ASEP will execute, connect back to C2, and initial access will be reestablished. The good news is: there are a lot of kill chain steps that need to be completed before a system can be set to boot in Safe Mode with networking — not to mention the fact that, especially if an end-user is on the system, rebooting into Safe Mode isn’t exactly stealthy. So what we can end up with is: an actor with high privilege (that doesn’t care about YOLO’ing a system reboot) coaxing a Windows system into a state where an implant is running and security tooling is not. Falcon Intelligence customers can read the following report for a specific example with technical details: CSA-230468 SCATTERED SPIDER Continues to Reboot Machines in Safe Mode to Disable Endpoint Protection [ US-1 US-2 EU Gov ]. Step 1 - The Event Bootstrapping a Windows system into Safe Mode requires the modification of Boot Configuration Data. With physical access to a system, there are many ways to start a system in Safe Mode. When you’re operating from a command line interface, however, the most common way is through the LOLBIN bcdedit. To start, what we want to do is see how common bcdedit moving systems into Safe Mode is or is not in our estate. For that, we’ll use the following: Falcon LTR #event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 event_platform=Win CommandLine=/safeboot/i ImageFileName=/\\(?\w+\.exe)$/i default(value="N/A", field=[GrandParentBaseFileName]) groupBy([GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName], function=([count(aid, distinct=true, as=uniqueEndpoints), count(aid, as=executionCount), collect([CommandLine])])) Event Search event_platform=Win event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 "bcdedit" "safeboot" fillnull value="-" GrandParentBaseFileName stats dc(aid) as uniqueEndpoints, count(aid) as executionCount, values(CommandLine) as CommandLine by GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName What we’re looking for in these results are things that are allowed in our environment. If you don’t have any activity in your environment, awesome. If you would like to plant some dummy data to test the queries against, you can run the following commands on a test system from an administrative command prompt with Falcon installed. ⚠️ MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING A TEST SYSTEM AND YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE MODIFYING BOOT CONFIGURATION DATA. FAT FINGERING ONE OF THESE COMMANDS CAN RENDER A SYSTEM UNBOOTABLE. AGAIN, USE A TEST SYSTEM. bcdedit /set {current} safeboot network Then to clear: bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot If you rerun these searches you should now see some data. Of note, the string {current} and {default} can also be a full GUID in real world usage. Example: bcdedit /set {XXXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXXX} safeboot network Using Falcon Long Term Repository I’ve searched back one year and, for me, bcdedit configuring systems to boot into Safe Mode is not common. My results are below and just have my planted test string. Falcon LTR search results for bcdedit usage with parameter safeboot. For others, the results will be very different. Some administration software and utilities will move systems to Safe Mode to perform maintenance or troubleshoot. Globally, this happens often. You can further refine the quires by excluding parent process, child process, command line arguments, etc. If you’re low on results for the query above — where we look for Safe Mode invocation — we can get even more aggressive and profile bcdedit as a whole: Falcon LTR #event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 event_platform=Win (ImageFileName=/\\bcdedit\.exe/i OR CommandLine=/bcdedit/i) ImageFileName=/\\(?\w+\.exe)$/i default(value="N/A", field=[GrandParentBaseFileName]) groupBy([GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName], function=([count(aid, distinct=true, as=uniqueEndpoints), count(aid, as=executionCount), collect([CommandLine])])) Event Search event_platform=Win event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 "bcdedit" fillnull value="-" GrandParentBaseFileName stats dc(aid) as uniqueEndpoints, count(aid) as executionCount, values(CommandLine) as CommandLine by GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName Again, for me even the invocation of bcdedit is not common. In the past one year, it’s been invoked 18 times. Falcon LTR search results for all bcdedit useage. Now we have some data about how bcdedit behaves in our environment, it’s time to make some decisions. Step 2 - Picking Alert Logic So you will likely fall into one of three buckets: - Behavior is common. Scheduling a query to run at an interval to audit use of bcdedit is best.
- Behavior is uncommon. Want to create a Custom IOA for bcdedit when is invoked.
- Behavior is uncommon. Want to create a Custom IOA for bcdedit when invoked with certain parameters.
For my tastes, seeing eighteen alerts per year is completely acceptable and warmly welcomed. Even if all the alerts are false positives, I don’t care. I like knowing and seeing all of them. For you, the preferred path might be different. We’ll go over how to create all three below. Scheduling a query to run at an interval to audit use of bcdedit. If you like the first set of queries we used above, you’re free to leverage those as a scheduled search. They are a little bland for CQF, though, so we’ll add some scoring to try and highlight the commands with fissile material contained within. You can adjust scoring, search criteria, or add to the statements as you see fit. Falcon LTR #event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 event_platform=Win (ImageFileName=/\\bcdedit\.exe/i OR CommandLine=/bcdedit/i) ImageFileName=/\\(?\w+\.exe)$/i // Begin scoring. Adjust searches and values as desired. case{ CommandLine=/\/set/i scoreSet := 5; *; } case { CommandLine=/\/delete/i scoreDelete := 5; *; } case { CommandLine=/safeboot/i scoreSafeBoot := 10; *; } case { CommandLine=/network/i scoreNetwork := 20; *; } case { CommandLine=/\{[0-9a-fA-F]{8}-([0-9a-fA-F]{4}-){3}[0-9a-fA-F]{12}[\}]/ scoreGUID := 9; *; } case { ParentBaseFileName=/^(powershellcmd)\.exe$/i scoreParent := "7"; *; } // End scoring default(value="N/A", field=[GrandParentBaseFileName]) default(value=0, field=[scoreSet, scoreDelete, scoreSafeBoot, scoreNetwork, scoreGUID, scoreParent]) totalScore := scoreSet + scoreDelete + scoreSafeBoot + scoreNetwork + scoreGUID + scoreParent groupBy([GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName, CommandLine], function=([collect(totalScore), count(aid, distinct=true, as=uniqueEndpoints), count(aid, as=executionCount)])) select([GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName, totalScore, uniqueEndpoints, executionCount, CommandLine]) sort(totalScore, order=desc, limit=1000) Event Search event_platform=Win event_simpleName=ProcessRollup2 "bcdedit" fillnull value="-" GrandParentBaseFileName eval scoreSet=if(match(CommandLine,"\/set"),"5","0") eval scoreDelete=if(match(CommandLine,"\/delete"),"5","0") eval scoreSafeBoot=if(match(CommandLine,"safeboot"),"10","0") eval scoreNetwork=if(match(CommandLine,"network"),"20","0") eval scoreGUID=if(match(CommandLine,"{[0-9a-fA-F]{8}-([0-9a-fA-F]{4}-){3}[0-9a-fA-F]{12}[}]"),"9","0") eval scoreParent=if(match(ParentBaseFileName,"^(powershellcmd)\.exe"),"7","0") eval totalScore=scoreSet+scoreDelete+scoreSafeBoot+scoreNetwork+scoreGUID+scoreParent stats dc(aid) as uniqueEndpoints, count(aid) as executionCount, values(CommandLine) as CommandLine by GrandParentBaseFileName, ParentBaseFileName, FileName, totalScore sort 0 - totalScore Falcon LTR results with scoring. You can add a threshold for alerting against the totalScore field or exclude command line arguments and process lineages that are expected in your environment. Create a Custom IOA for bcdedit. I have a feeling this is where most of you will settle. That is: if bcdedit is run, or run with specific parameters, put an alert in the UI or block the activity all together. For this, we’ll navigate to Endpoint Security > Custom IOA Rule Groups. I’m going to make a new Windows Group named “TA0005 - Defense Evasion.” In the future, I’ll collect all my Defense Evasion rules here. Now, we want to make a new “Process Creation” rule, set it to “Detect” (you can go to prevent if you’d like) and pick a criticality — I’m going to use “Critical.” You can pick your rule name, but I’ll use “[T1562.009] Impair Defenses: Safe Mode Boot” and just copy and paste MITRE’s verbiage into the “Description” field: Adversaries may abuse Windows safe mode to disable endpoint defenses. Safe mode starts up the Windows operating system with a limited set of drivers and services. Third-party security software such as endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools may not start after booting Windows in safe mode. Custom IOA alert rule creation. In my instance, I’m going to cast a very wide net and look for anytime bcdedit is invoked via the command line. In the “Command Line” field of the Custom IOA, I’ll use: .*bcdedit.* If you want to narrow things to bcdedit invoking safeboot, you can use the following for “Command Line”: .*bcdedit.+safeboot.* And if you want to narrow even further to bcdedit invoking safeboot with networking, you can use the following for “Command Line”: .*bcdedit.+safeboot.+network.* Make sure to try a test string to ensure your logic is working as expected. Then, enable the rule, enable the rule group, and assign the rule group to the prevention policy of your choosing. Finally, we test… Custom IOA test results. Perfection! Getting Really Fancy If you want to get really fancy, you can pair this Custom IOA with a Fusion workflow. For me, I’m going to create a Fusion workflow that does the following if this pattern triggers: - Network Contains system
- Launches a script that resets safeboot via bcdedit
- Sends a Slack notification to the channel where my team lurks
As this post has already eclipsed 1,800 words, we’ll let you pick your Workflow du jour on your own. There are a plethora of options at your disposal, though. Workflow to network contain, reset safebook, and send a Slack if Custom IOA rule triggers. Conclusion Understanding how the LOLBIN bcdedit is operating in your environment can help disrupt adversary operations and prevent them from furthering actions on objectives. As always, happy hunting and Happy Friday Thursday. submitted by Andrew-CS to crowdstrike [link] [comments] |

They say you cannot give a weapon a mind, for which it'll decide not to kill or to kill its maker. I, for one, was that maker. Before I write this message in my notes, now is the time to give a warning. Do not become like me, and don't view yourself as a god.
In the end, we die at our own hands. It happened about 30 years ago, after I inherited my father's company, Silver Stone. I have made some changes to the company's security. Replacing humans with androids.
I have always been fascinated by the fields of cybernetics and robotics. With my studies in the fields of mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science. I graduated and got my bachelor's degree at VMI. Wanting to bring my experiences to the table, I, along with many others, created the first cybernetic humans.
But behind closed doors, all I ever wanted was to create my own private army. And so I did, at every expense. Not wanting to lose this opportunity.
Sure, my family doesn't like the idea of this, including my ex-wife and daughters. Together with my mother and two older sisters, who have a stake in the corporation, we disliked this very idea. including the board members.
Stating that it is unethical and wouldn't want to replace humans with machines. But I ignored them and proceeded.
Sure, the military has its combat robots. For me, I created a security company and division primarily composed of Corporate Tactical Security Synthetics, or CTSS. It went so smoothly in the beginning, yet over the years, I used them in times of conflict and espionage.
Taking out the competition, giving them heavy weapons, armor, and maritime roles. They are perfect. Too, perfect. They became my own phalanx, my own legion. It became one of my proudest moments when I wanted to meet them alone on the airfield. I walked up to them, smiling from ear to ear and filled with so much joy. Until I saw one of them take off his helmet and smile in return.
Being surrounded by all of them, with their cargo tactical attire and weapons in hand. There he placed his hand on my shoulder, gazed at me with his eyes, and led me to an open field. I was sweating profusely and trembling, knowing what would happen to me. It was then that I finally accepted my demise.
"Behold! Master, you're now Pertinax. Like he, his own soldiers acted against him."
Feeling the breeze on my face as the wind cools me down. Watching the mountain range before me. I turned around to look at them, who were raising their machine guns and aiming in my direction. And I wondered where it all went wrong. I looked up into the clear blue sky, shed a tear, and swallowed.
"My name is Ozymandias. King of kings: Look on my works, ye mighty, and dispair." I whispered.

2023.06.08 19:10 cluicheadairlax1 Dude I suck for any way in which I passed on unhealthy habits from Morm Dad on to you.
When I made the investments, I mean you can tell I planned it out and put a lot of thought into it. Especially all of the "in-kind investments"—the non-monetary part from eBay. I was really excited.
Morm Dad looks down on me in some ways, like telling me that I am too poor or too sick or too disabled to invest. I sat down and tried really consciously to not repeat any bad habits I noticed from him. Ultimately I’m only 31, and 15-60 minutes of thinking is not going to undue 10+ years of influence from someone in his 70s.
I most especially regret anything I did that communicated that I look down on you or see you as less than. As a newbie to the Bernie movement, I was kind of expecting Marx to be quoted a lot more. I’m learning that he’s not quoted. Marx talks all about how capital / money distorts our minds and our bodies abc our relationships. Not everyone even likes Marx much anymore because some people see Marx blaming money / capital as a cop-out that doesn’t hold the individual accountable.
I had an experience with August, the former Bernie campaign state chair from. Idk what state but he is from Montana. He had an interpretation of life that made me suspect that Bernie stuff was more heavily Marxist than it apparently is.
I misread the situation and am aghast for any way in which I hurt you, C, or A. As far as others complaining about me, those people make me uncomfortable too.
Its 0% our fault for kind of previous generations’ failure to figure out answers beforehand about how no and straight stuff works. After ten years in Utah, my value system does not allow me to channel bisexual attraction into business symbolism. I was hoping to explore both the attractions and the business in parallel. I made those sacrifices to try and help you because you were communicating in your posts that you were suffering.
Although we made mistakes we still did an amazing job. You rock. I hope therapy was great today. I’m off to get some pizza :)

2023.06.08 19:08 Sundaiigh Is it worth it
So I’m in New York, not in the city but the second largest city here. And the governor lowered the tax rate here so no one has come in two years. So I’m thinking of dropping everything here to move to LA to hopefully get more PA gigs so I can join some unions etc. I am a suny graduate from their media production program and I graduated in the middle of 2020 things have been soooo rough with all of this but I am not happy doing anything else. I was grateful to get a few gigs the past could years, like one small month a year. But again so grateful cause I love it.
I’m trying to get a truck so I can do this cause I mean I don’t want to be homeless but I’m willing to live in the car to do this. I’ve never even been to cali ever before so idk how anything works I just know I am probably not getting a gig in NYS and I cant live with this fact that if I stay here I won’t have worked on anything this year. I would have to find a job for the interim is that hard to do with out of state I’d? Like how realistic is this plan?
Also no I don’t want to make my own stuff. I didn’t go to film school to become a film maker to make my own things I went to school to have the bachelors degrees that the positions I wanted in big studios required to be considered for the job. I’m settling cause I’m the past I did want to be a director or producer but I can’t make enough money here for this Col to realistically make my own films here in this state and I just want to work for other people. Cause the three years I have tried to get my own things done. I can’t pay people to give the quality I want to put out and my equipment is so old no one wants to pay me anything to use my crap camera (canon t5i) more so in my area this area doesn’t want to pay anyone anything for any creative work.
TDLr how did you if you did move to la do it what would be your best advice.

2023.06.08 19:08 Successful_Cut5317 Tarot-Tarot Fruit
Ability: The
Tarot-Tarot Fruit allows the user to create, shape and manipulate tarot cards. The user is able to create a full deck of tarot cards, and each card gives the user a unique one-time use ability.
Once a card is drawn the effect will immediately be in use and the card (as soon as the power has been used) will disappear and (Like a Vivre card in reverse) will become a small piece of the tarot card that slowly becomes a full card (The user is able to expend extra stamina to speed up the process of completing the card), Once the card is whole again it can be used immediately.
The time taken to regain a full card varies, if the user does not put in any energy of their own to regain a card they have used the process can take a month, but with energy that process can take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a few hours and even with extreme levels of energy being put into the card and a decent level of mastery over the fruit the user can reduce the time even more to about ten minutes.
Weaknesses:
- Card Limitation: The user can only create a limited number of tarot cards at a time, a typical full deck of tarot cards. Once a card is used, it takes time for the user to replenish their deck.
- Physical Vulnerability: The user is vulnerable while creating and manipulating tarot cards, requiring focus and concentration. Any interruption or attack during this process can disrupt their abilities.
- Card Dependence: The user relies heavily on the tarot cards for their abilities. If their cards are lost, damaged, or stolen, they lose access to those specific abilities until they can create new ones.
Abilities:
- The Fool - The user gains the ability of unpredictability and adaptability. The Fool card represents a journey into the unknown, and as such, the user can temporarily access abilities from other drawn cards, mimicking their effects for a short period of time. However, the mimicry is not as potent as the original card's ability. The Fool card adds an element of surprise and versatility to the user's arsenal, making them unpredictable and challenging to defeat.
- The Magician - The user gains the ability to manipulate and control the fundamental elements of the universe. They can create, shape, and manipulate all four classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water. This includes the ability to generate powerful elemental attacks, create barriers or shields, manipulate the environment, and even transmute matter to some extent. The user can also perform alchemical experiments and create potions with various effects, utilizing their mastery over the elements. The Magician card represents the user's proficiency in manipulating the basic building blocks of existence, making them a formidable force to be reckoned with.
- The High Priestess - The user gains enhanced intuition and psychic abilities. They can tap into the collective unconscious and gain knowledge or insights about the past, present, and potential futures. They can also create psychic barriers to protect themselves or others from mental intrusion. Additionally, they have the power to manipulate the flow of time within their own mind, allowing them to process information and make decisions at an accelerated rate.
- The Empress - The user gains the ability to manipulate and control plant life. They can accelerate plant growth, shape vines and branches, and even communicate with plants on a basic level. They can create barriers and traps using thorny vines or unleash powerful plant-based attacks. The user can also extract medicinal properties from plants to create healing remedies or toxins for offensive purposes. Additionally, they possess an inherent connection to nature, granting them enhanced vitality and resilience when in natural environments.
- The Emperor - The user gains the ability to manipulate and control authority and leadership. They can project an aura of dominance and command respect from others. The user can temporarily enhance their own leadership skills, making others more inclined to follow their orders or be influenced by their suggestions. They can also create illusions of grandeur and authority, temporarily intimidating or subduing opponents. Additionally, the user gains a limited control over objects and structures, allowing them to manipulate and reshape them to a certain extent. This ability can be used defensively to create barriers or fortifications, or offensively to create weapons or traps.
- The Hierophant - The user gains the ability to tap into spiritual energy and manipulate the spiritual realm. They can communicate with spirits, channel their energy, and perform rituals or ceremonies to achieve various effects. This ability allows the user to gain knowledge from the spiritual realm, perform exorcisms, or even summon and command spiritual beings to aid them in battle or other tasks. The Hierophant card grants the user a deeper understanding of the supernatural and the ability to harness its power.
- The Lovers - The user gains the ability to manipulate emotions and create bonds between individuals. They can enhance or dampen emotions, influencing the feelings and relationships of others. They can create temporary alliances or induce temporary infatuation or loyalty. The user can also sense the emotional connections between people, allowing them to detect hidden relationships or feelings.
- The Chariot - The user gains enhanced speed, agility, and control over vehicles or any means of transportation. They can manipulate the momentum and direction of vehicles, making them move faster or change their course abruptly. The user can summon and control a spectral chariot, allowing them to traverse land, sea, or air with ease. Additionally, they can create temporary tracks or roads for their chariot to travel on, even in difficult terrains. The Chariot ability grants the user a formidable advantage in transportation and mobility, making them highly versatile in combat and exploration scenarios.
- Strength - The user gains enhanced physical strength and durability, surpassing the limits of a regular human. They can perform feats of great strength, such as lifting heavy objects or overpowering opponents. Additionally, they possess a heightened resistance to physical harm, allowing them to withstand attacks that would normally injure or incapacitate others. However, it's important to note that the user's enhanced physical abilities are not limitless. They may experience fatigue and exhaustion after prolonged use, requiring rest and recovery. Additionally, their strength does not grant them invincibility, and they can still be defeated through other means such as strategic attacks or weaknesses unrelated to physical prowess.
- The Hermit - The user gains the ability to manipulate shadows and darkness to a greater extent. They can create a cloak of darkness that grants them enhanced stealth and invisibility, making it difficult for others to detect their presence. They can also manipulate shadows to create defensive barriers or offensive tendrils that can immobilize or restrain opponents. The user can tap into the knowledge and wisdom of solitude, gaining heightened perception and insight, allowing them to uncover hidden truths or see-through illusions. Additionally, they can create pockets of darkness that distort light and sound, creating areas of silence or darkness that can disorient or confuse enemies. The Hermit card provides the user with enhanced introspection and self-reflection, enabling them to understand themselves and their surroundings on a deeper level.
- The Wheel of Fortune - The user gains the ability to manipulate luck and probability. They can alter the likelihood of certain events occurring, increasing their chances of success or causing misfortune for their opponents. They can change the outcome of random events, such as dice rolls or card draws, to their advantage. The user can also enhance their own luck, granting them temporary advantages in various situations. However, it's important to note that the user's control over luck is not absolute. The manipulation of probability is subject to chance itself, and the user cannot guarantee specific outcomes. They can only influence the odds in their favour or against their adversaries. Additionally, the effects of luck manipulation may be temporary and limited in scope, depending on the situation and the user's mastery of the ability.
- Justice - The user gains the ability to manipulate balance and justice. They can sense imbalances in situations and adjust them accordingly. This power allows them to enhance their physical and mental abilities to their peak for a short period of time, granting them heightened strength, speed, agility, and perception. They can also create an area of influence where the concept of justice is intensified, causing those within the area to be bound by a sense of fairness and moral responsibility. This can result in individuals feeling compelled to act justly and face the consequences of their actions. The Justice ability requires a strong sense of moral judgment and a deep understanding of the concept of justice. The user must possess a firm belief in the balance of the universe and the consequences of one's actions. Without a strong moral compass, the Justice ability may not reach its full potential.
- The Hanged Man - The user gains the ability to manipulate gravity and alter their own orientation in relation to it. They can create gravitational fields, causing objects or people to float or be pulled towards them. This ability allows them to move in unconventional ways, such as walking on walls or ceilings, and can also be used defensively to repel or immobilize opponents by manipulating their gravitational force. Additionally, the user can induce a state of suspended animation in themselves or others, temporarily slowing down bodily functions to conserve energy or avoid attacks. However, this ability is limited to gravitational manipulation and does not grant control over time manipulation.
- Death - With the "Death" card, the user can induce decay and deterioration in their surroundings, causing objects to crumble and wither. They can also drain the vitality from their opponents, weakening them and sapping their energy. Additionally, the user gains a heightened resistance to death-related effects. They can withstand poisons, diseases, and other harmful substances that would normally be fatal, granting them a degree of immortality. However, this immunity is not absolute, as extremely powerful or specialized death-related abilities may still pose a threat. The user can also sense the presence of life forces, allowing them to detect living beings even if they are hidden or invisible. This ability grants them an advantage in tracking and locating their targets. It's important to note that while the "Death" card represents the concept of transformation and renewal, it does not grant the user the ability to control the actual concept of death. They cannot kill someone directly with this ability.
- Temperance - The user gains the ability to manipulate the balance and harmony of elements. They can blend and mix different substances or energies, creating unique combinations with enhanced properties. For example, they could mix fire and water to create steam, or combine earth and air to create a swirling vortex. The user can also use this ability to restore balance in chaotic situations, calming conflicts or stabilizing turbulent environments.
- The Devil - The user gains the ability to manipulate darkness and temptation. They can create and control shadows, obscuring vision or trapping opponents within darkness. Additionally, they can tempt others by amplifying their desires or fears, influencing their actions and decisions. The Devil card grants the user the power to tap into their own inner darkness and unleash it upon their opponents. They can create an aura of malevolence, causing unease and fear in those around them. This ability allows the user to manipulate negative emotions and temptations, making it difficult for others to resist their influence. With the power of The Devil, the user can manifest dark tendrils or shadowy constructs, which can be used for offensive and defensive purposes. They can ensnare opponents, drain their energy, or even manipulate the shadows to form weapons for close combat. However, it's important to note that The Devil's power comes with a price. The user must exercise caution, as delving too deep into darkness may risk their own sanity and moral compass. Additionally, the manipulation of negative emotions and temptations can have long-term consequences on the user's psyche and relationships with others.
- The Tower - The user gains the ability to manipulate structures and cause destruction. By drawing "The Tower" card, the user can create powerful seismic waves or generate localized destructive explosions. They can also disintegrate or collapse buildings and other structures with their abilities. This power is particularly effective against fortifications, defences, and barriers. However, it's important to note that the use of "The Tower" card comes with risks and limitations. The user should exercise caution when wielding this power, as its indiscriminate destruction can harm innocent bystanders or even themselves if they're not careful. Additionally, the user may find it challenging to control the magnitude and range of their destructive capabilities, potentially leading to unintended consequences.
- The Star - The user gains the ability to manipulate celestial energy and harness the power of stars. They can create and control starlight, using it for offensive or defensive purposes. They can generate dazzling light beams or create protective barriers using starlight. Additionally, they can tap into the energy of the stars to enhance their own physical abilities, granting them heightened strength, speed, and agility. When the user activates The Star card, a radiant star symbol appears before them, serving as a focal point for their celestial abilities. They can channel the energy through their body or project it outward, unleashing devastating star-based attacks. The intensity and potency of their powers depend on their skill and mastery of this particular card.
- The Moon - The user gains the ability to manipulate illusions and emotions. They can create realistic illusions that can deceive the senses of others, making them see, hear, and feel things that are not there. Additionally, they can manipulate the emotions of those around them, inducing fear, happiness, sadness, or any other desired emotion. When the user invokes "The Moon" card, they can create complex illusions that can affect multiple senses simultaneously. They can make themselves or others invisible, create lifelike illusions of objects or people, or even alter the perception of time and space within the illusion. The emotional manipulation aspect of this ability allows the user to influence the feelings of others. They can amplify existing emotions, suppress emotions, or even implant false emotions in their targets. By manipulating emotions, the user can create distractions, incite conflicts, or manipulate people to act in certain ways. However, it's important to note that while illusions and emotional manipulation can be powerful, they are limited by the user's creativity and the understanding of the target's psyche. Skilled individuals with strong mental fortitude or abilities to detect illusions may be more resistant to these effects.
- The Sun - The user gains the ability to manipulate solar energy and harness the power of sunlight. They can create intense beams of light that can blind or burn opponents. Additionally, they can absorb solar energy to enhance their physical attributes, granting them increased strength, speed, and endurance. The user can also project solar flares or create protective shields using solar energy. When the user activates The Sun card, they radiate a brilliant golden light, symbolizing their connection to the sun. This card grants the user immense power during daylight hours, making them a formidable force in sunny environments. However, the user's abilities may be weakened or diminished in the absence of sunlight or in shaded areas. It's important for the user to strategically plan their actions and take advantage of sunny conditions to fully utilize the potential of The Sun card.
- Judgement - The user gains the ability to pass judgment and enforce consequences. When the user draws "The Judgement" card, they can evaluate the actions and intentions of individuals and determine their fate. They have the power to render judgments and enforce corresponding punishments or rewards based on their assessments. This ability allows the user to hold others accountable for their actions and mete out justice accordingly. They can expose the truth, uncover hidden motivations, and reveal secrets. Additionally, the user can invoke the power of "The Judgement" to cleanse and purify, removing corruption or negativity from individuals or environments. This ability can also be used defensively to shield against attacks or to grant temporary invulnerability as a form of protection. It's important to note that the user's ability to pass judgment is based on their own moral compass and understanding of justice. Their judgments may be subjective and influenced by their own biases or beliefs. Additionally, the consequences enforced by "The Judgement" card are not absolute and can be subject to interpretation or negotiation.
- The World - The user of the Tarot-Tarot Fruit gains the ability to summon and control "The World" card. When thrown, this card has the power to trap anyone it makes contact with within a dimension known as "The World" for a duration of 24 hours. The trapped individual is completely cut off from the outside world and unable to escape until the time limit expires. While trapped within "The World," the victim experiences a suspended state of time and remains unconscious. They are essentially frozen in time and unable to age, interact with their surroundings, or engage in any activities. However, their physical condition remains intact, and they do not require sustenance or suffer from any bodily harm during this period. After the 24-hour duration elapses, the trapped individual is automatically ejected from "The World" and returns to the location where they were initially trapped. The person's memory of the time spent within "The World" may be hazy or fragmented, depending on the individual's mental fortitude.
It's important to note that this ability is all the cards are limited to a single use (at a time, ie they cannot be stacked or have multiple of the same card in the deck at one time), as each card created by the user of the Tarot-Tarot Fruit provides a unique one-time ability. After a card (eg "The World") is used, it disappears from the deck and must be replenished over time.
Awakening:
The user's awakening with the Tarot-Tarot Fruit allows them to reach the pinnacle of their abilities and gain greater control over their tarot-based powers.
Card Fusion:
After awakening the Tarot-Tarot Fruit, the user gains the ability to fuse multiple tarot cards together, creating new and unique abilities that combine the powers of the individual cards. By selecting specific tarot cards and infusing them with their own energy, the user can create a fused card that represents the combined essence of the chosen cards.
Card fusion requires concentration and a deep understanding of the individual cards' powers. The user must carefully select the tarot cards they wish to fuse and channel their energy into the fusion process. Once the fusion is complete, a new tarot card is created, representing the combined abilities of the fused cards.
The abilities of the fused card can vary greatly depending on the chosen combination. For example, fusing The Magician and The High Priestess cards may result in the ability to manipulate elemental energy with heightened psychic control. The possibilities are vast, limited only by the user's creativity and knowledge of the tarot cards.
However, it's important to note that card fusion consumes a significant amount of the user's stamina and energy. The more powerful and complex the fused ability, the greater the strain it puts on the user. Additionally, the user must have access to the individual tarot cards they wish to fuse, as they cannot fuse cards they do not possess.
Card fusion adds a new layer of versatility and unpredictability to the user's arsenal. By combining the powers of different tarot cards, they can create unique abilities tailored to specific situations or opponents. The fused cards can be used in the same way as the individual cards, granting the user temporary one-time use abilities.
However, just like with the individual tarot cards, the user is limited by the number of fused cards they can create at a time. Once a fused card is used, it takes time for the user to replenish their deck and create new fusions. The user must carefully manage their resources and plan their strategies accordingly.
Overall, the ability to fuse tarot cards expands the user's range of possibilities and allows them to adapt their powers to different challenges. It requires careful thought and understanding of the individual cards' abilities, as well as strategic thinking in combining them to create powerful and unique fused abilities.

2023.06.08 19:07 Express_Blueberry81 [Education] your opinion about the MBA in Germany
I am a software engineer with15 years of experience, I also hold a masters degree in Engineering, I also live in Germany, and I feel since quite a while that it is time to have a major career shift with all the consequences that come with it by getting out of the comfort zone. I am also finding myself getting better with poeple in the higher management positions, in other words poeple in my age. I have been considering having an MBA in Germany in any of the schools that offer those programs, I have been searching a lot every where: here in reddit , in other forums in the internet, on linkedIn and also in the webistes and brochures of the universities.
A lot of poeple are very sceptical about the MBA concept in Germany in General, a lot of poeple are also advising to avoid private education in general in Germany saying that public diplomas are worth better, but :
1- having an additional masters in public universities: not possible in my case as I am in full time employee from one side and I see no big advantage on getting an additional master degree of science as I already have one.
2- private MBA programs in other countries: I wish I could but the good programs are very expensive and honestly not affordable for a middle class German engineer.
What are your experiences and your opinion about MBA programs propsed in some TUs for example (TU Berlin, TU München ...etc ) . the point here is not to become the CEO of BMW from a day to another nor the executive of the EZB, but is it really worth to invest 40K of savings on an MBA diploma from TU Munchen for example ?

2023.06.08 19:06 Empyrealist /r/youtubedl is participating in the June 12th blackout to protest upcoming Reddit API changes which will kill 3rd party apps and hurt accessibility
Why are we doing this?
Starting on July 1st, Reddit has decided to impose exorbitant charges on third-party app developers (Relay, Reddit is Fun, Apollo, Baconreader, Narwhal, etc.) for utilizing their API. This decision has far-reaching consequences that not only hinder app developers but also affect the experience of moderators and users alike, including
impacting accessibility. The lack of function in Reddit's official app has made far from a complete solution for moderators, and left many users dissatisfied with their experience with it as well.
What exactly does this mean?
Our subreddit will be going private on June 12th. This will last for at least 48 hours, and we may choose to extend this indefinitely. During this blackout period, the subreddit will be set to private, rendering it inaccessible to all users. This collective action is intended to raise awareness and urge Reddit to reconsider their recent API changes. Our primary goal is to initiate a productive dialogue with Reddit, leading to a reversal of the detrimental modifications they have implemented.
We understand that this blackout may cause temporary inconvenience to our community, and for that, we apologize. However, we firmly believe that this short-term disruption will bring long-term benefits for every user. By standing together with other subreddit communities, we hope to send a clear message to Reddit and foster a meaningful conversation about the future of their API policies.
In the meantime, if you support this blackout, we encourage you to let Reddit know that you disagree with their planned changes. There are a few ways you can express your concerns:
- Sign this open letter to Reddit
- Share your thoughts on other social media platforms, spreading awareness about the issue.
- Show your support by participating in the Reddit boycott for 48 hours, starting on June 12th.
We appreciate your understanding, support, and active participation in this important endeavor. It is through the strength and dedication of our community that we can strive for a better Reddit experience for everyone involved.

2023.06.08 19:05 Repulsive-Gas1633 Seeking Advice on Breaking into IT: Need Guidance on My Journey So Far!
Hello, fellow Redditors! I’m reaching out for some valuable advice on how to make headway in the IT field because, honestly, I’ve hit a roadblock and I’m not sure what else to try. Here’s a little background about me: I currently work as a field coordinator at a major local hospital, but my true passion lies in coding. I’ve been teaching myself how to code for the past two years, focusing on both front and backend technologies. On top of that, I’ve been volunteering as a software engineer for a company for the past three months, although progress has been slower than I had hoped.
The thing is, I don’t have any formal education like a bachelor’s or associate degree. I’ve attended tech events to network, but they often felt more like speed dating sessions than opportunities to make meaningful connections. Despite my relentless efforts, I’ve faced rejection after rejection, with over 300 applications turned down. I understand the job market is tough, but I firmly believe there are still opportunities out there for me.
Given my background and experience, I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer. What steps can I take to improve my chances and make progress towards my IT career goals? Thank you in advance for your valuable insights!
