2023.06.09 23:10 its_the_pi_guyy Redundancy on my Primary/Secondary Apps
Hey y'all, I'm
pre-writing my secondaries right now, currently brainstorming. In my PS, I talked about how working at my family's gas station in an very low-income/underserved area inspired me to pursue medicine (specifically after talking with customers and learning more about how hard it was to get proper care here). I also made this a most meaningful activity. I want to elaborate more on this for my Diversity essays, but I don't want to sound like a broken record about my experience growing up and working there. What do y'all think?

2023.06.09 21:10 CurioSGeorge101 (ADVICE) Help needed to decide between shadowing or volunteering at same clinic
Hey
premed. I need your help with deciding if I should shadow or volunteer at this clinic. Some context, the summer going into my first year of college, I shadowed an ophthalmologist at his clinic and developed a great connection with him. The experience was different than "regular" shadowing as he had me interact with patients and even help out around the office.
Now that summer is creeping up, I want to go back to the same clinic, but I'm wondering if I should change my position there to more of a volunteer position. I know shadowing doesn't count as a clinical experience (apparently). Should I just volunteer at the place or stick to shadowing, or maybe do both (and split up the hours)? What do you guys recommend.
P.S. I have 100-ish hours from the shadowing experience from last summer.

2023.06.09 02:25 Notforcontinuoususe Diversity Essay Advice
'Tis the season for diversity essays.
Perusing the New section of
premed I have seen several questions regarding "should I use {hobby} as the topic of my diversity essay?"
Certainly, there are plenty of people who have gotten into medical school using that method. However, I would argue that is not what adcoms (especially ones at "better" schools) are looking for.
As an ORM, here is my advice on diversity essays:
I would strongly encourage you to google "how to write a diversity essay as a [white/black/male/female/trans/gay/etc] person." Please include whichever identities you identify with. The userbase of Reddit, in particular, contains a lot of college-educated people. There are many helpful posts from adcoms in grad school, law school, and medical school across the useful subs. There are also plenty of people from college admissions which I found useful last cycle as well. SDN also has much useful advice on writing a "Diversity Statement."
FYI most of the advice falls more towards writing about your experiences with "otherness" - if you experienced it, then about how it has molded you as a person and if you have witnessed it how you have campaigned against it. Considering these questions increased in frequency during the recent social justice movements that is probably the direction that adcoms want this question to go.
As well it should be - Medicine is full of well-meaning doctors completely missing (or misinterpreting) the patient because their patient was different. For evidence of this see
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down or
Doing Harm. You will have an "other" patient at some point as a doctor where cultural (mis)-communication and bias play a role in the patient's care - so it would probably be beneficial to reflect on that in this section if you want to be a doctor.
Also, there is a section on the main app for hobbies, so unless you wrote a strong social justice app, this is probably the place to cover social justice, cultural sensitivity, and your experiences with "otherness." Not your hobbies.

2023.06.09 01:41 byul613 Controversial opinion: why I think more AM media representation won’t help all AMs
Anyone who skims AsianMasculinity and aznidentity will know that a lot of users constantly talk about things like K-pop becoming more widely accepted and the need for more masculine representation of Asian men in the media.
To an extent, I do believe more representation will help. But not in the way these guys think.
Example: look at the most attractive white actors. Channing Tatum, Brad Pitt, young Leonardo DiCaprio, etc.
The representation of these guys in the media does help white guys who are already decently attractive. But this media representation doesn’t help the socially awkward nerdy white guys. Just take a look at
VirginityExchange. You’ll see plenty of white guys (most of whom are self-described as nerdy and socially awkward, and many who are out of shape) who cannot get a girl.
In the 2000s, there has been more representation of attractive and masculine asian men in mainstream media (granted, not nearly enough). One example that comes to mind is Leonardo Nam. He played Brian McBrian, the love interest of Tibby Rollins in the Sisterhood of Traveling Pants (AMWF couple here).
Also Kuan was depicted as a popular football player in the cartoon Danny Fenton and was shown getting together with a popular blond girl. And Jake Long was the love interest of Rose in the cartoon American Dragon (another AMWF couple).
There is also the novel The Lovely Bones that was made into a movie. The love interest of the main character is Ray Singh, who is described to be Indian American. Again, another AMWF couple).
What do these Asian male characters have in common? They are all extremely attractive and not socially awkward. Leonardo Nam also has a great body.
Even if handsome and masculine Asian men become widely accepted in mainstream media, this representation will only help the Asian guys who are already physically fit and not socially awkward. More media representation of masculine and handsome Asian men isn’t going to help the socially awkward premed/engineering student that are often seen on college campuses and probably make up a significant chunk of people on AsianMasculinity because that guy has nothing in common with the Asian men in the media, just like how Channing Tatum doesn’t really help the typical nerdy white guy.

Hi everyone, I graduated this past May and I’m applying MD and DO this cycle. I could use some help making my school list. Ideally will apply by June 20th to ~20 MD schools and ~10 DO schools. My state school is U of A – Tucson so I’ll be applying there of course. I’ll also be applying to ATSU-SOMA and AZCOM just because I want to stay close to home. I am aware of ATSU-SOMA’s reputation and AZCOM’s exorbitant tuition prices. Would love to hear suggestions because I’m having trouble narrowing down schools on MSAR.
URM: Hispanic and Native American (Pascua-Yaqui) but no tribal affiliation. Parents are veterans and my experiences moving around the country are a big part of my personal statement (not sure if that matters).
MCAT: 508
GPA: 3.82
sGPA: 3.63 – 3.7 (not sure if I calculated it right with AMCAS guidelines.)
Clinical Experience
Certified Diabetes Prevention Coach with the American Pharmacist Association (Paid Position): Completed 350 hrs, Anticipated 600 hrs
Physician Shadowing - Shadowed a family medicine DO in Scottsdale: ~10 hours.
Diabetes Prevention Health Coach at a Small clinic in South Tucson (Volunteer Position) – Worked with undocumented patients that spoke only Spanish and many native American patients. The position required that I spoke Spanish, but I’ve forgotten a lot of it now: 300 hours.
Medical Scribe – ED: 500 hrs.
Non-Clinical Experience
Resident assistant (Paid Position): 2200 hours over ~3 years
Night Assistant (Paid position) - Incident and Crisis management position with the housing department for the summer at the U of A: 200 hrs

Volunteer at various nonprofits with a Premed Honor Society: 100 hrs
Hobbies – Hours are crazy just because I’ve been doing these since before college.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Last time I seriously competed was in high school but this is a hobby that I’ve donated a good chunk of time to. Keeps me sane and in shape: 3,650 hrs
Classical Guitar: Have been playing all my life. Helps me practice discipline and focus. Have played on and off at various venues in Tucson: 8,000 hrs
Writing: Have been working on a biography of my great grandmother who battled leprosy for a few years now: 115 hrs
LoR’s: 2 science Professors, 1 English professor, 1 MD. Maybe 1 from my P.I. but not too sure.

Hi everyone!
It's time for our weekly essay help thread!
Please
use this thread to request feedback on your essays, including your personal statement, work/activities descriptions, most meaningful activity essays, and secondary application essays.
All other posts requesting essay feedback will be removed. Before asking for help writing an application essay, please read through our
"Essays" wiki page which covers both the personal statement and secondary application essays. It also includes links to previous posts/guides that have been helpful to users in the past.
Please be respectful in giving and receiving feedback, and remember to take all feedback with a grain of salt. Whether someone is applying this cycle or has already been admitted in a previous cycle does not inherently make them a better writer or more suited to provide feedback than another person. If you are a current or previous medical student who has served on a med school's admissions committee, please make that clear when you are offering to provide feedback to current applicants.
Good luck!

2023.06.01 04:20 sadboi751 Answers to whether prestige of a college actually matters (Warning: Long Post)
Hello A2C!
I decided to make a return to this subreddit after a little over 6 years. I was a lurker in hs but was on here. I ended up going to an Ivy League School and like many of you, thought prestige was everything. I used to think that Ivy students were destined for success and that it was a ticket to the good life. Browsing through posts on here, it seems that many of you think the same as I once did. Well, I've graduated college and now work in management consulting at an MBB firm. I came back by chance after 6 yrs and noticed somebody on here feeling bad all their friends got into ivies and they didn't. I remember when I was your age and parents/other adults would constantly say "CoLlEgE dOeSn'T mAtTeR" and thinking it sounded nice but that college does actually matter. So... I thought I would give you the straight, hard truth with no lies from someone who actually used to be you!
- Does prestige of a university matter? Yes- but to an extent. My firm is considered by many to be one the most selective employers in the world. At this point, I have now had the amazing opportunity to get an inside look into recruiting. Here's the deal. If you want to go to a top notch consulting firm or an investment bank, you DO NOT need to go to an Ivy League UG lmao. Honestly, a T20-T30 school will suffice or a flagship stateschool. Think UT Austin for ex. These are known as "target schools." However, you might be reading this and think you are screwed if you don't go to these schools. Wrong! I have seen plenty of people get in from non-target schools. It will just require a bit of networking and finesse. Furthermore, I REPEAT, no consutling/banking firm cares about what school you go to after you get the interview. Joe Schmoe State and Harvard are viewed equally. We evaluate you on your case (what we call the interview) performance only. There is a strict rubric lol. And beyond banking/consulting (also don't overhype these professions. Not everything that glitters is gold), 0 ppl give a crap about where you go.
- Is an elite college the ticket to success? LMAOOOO. This is comedy gold. I know so many classmates I graduated with who are unemployed rn. It's another college app race in itself once you get to college with club applications, job grind, grad school grind, etc. Don't believe me? Look at premed or MBA. They are just as toxic as this place sometimes can be. It never ends. At each step of the way, some will succeed and some will fail. My best friend in college got into 0 med schools despite an Ivy UG. My best friend from hs got into Johns Hopkins which is considered one of the best and my hs friend went to a school that was not remotely prestigious. So if you got into an Ivy, congrats. Celebrate but realize that you are just beginning another long grind. And if you didn't get into an Ivy, don't sweat it! You are starting on a fresh slate. TRUST ME, you will be just fine. I've worked with so many ppl who did not go to prestigious schools and have so many friends from hs who went to not well known schools who are killing it!
- So what should you do? So as you can probably see, the grind never ending is real asf. Idk who is reading this whether you're a freshman, gearing up to apply, or have already gotten in. Point is that eventually (I hope), you will realize that all of this is some bs that society labels for you to participate in. Ultimately, you are trying to prove to yourself that you have value based on where you go to school. This is a dangerous mentality as it is driven by external validation. The truth is that you do have value inherently. You can choose to live a fun, exciting life in the moment. Go out to that party, ask that special someone out, go on that crazy adventure. Because in the end when you've graduated college, you won't look back on hs and be like "dang, I sure am glad I got a 5 on AP Chem." No! Instead, you'll regret not living in the moment in what could've been the best time of your life. And once you graduate college, nobody gives a crap about prestige of company or your schooling. Rather, ppl are jealous of how happy people are with their friends, relationships, and experiences. That Harvard Grad working at Goldman Sachs with 0 friends drinking alone every night is jealous of a State School frat bro working a chill job in tech with a healthy relationship. Truth!
If you're still reading this, I'm flattered. In closing, while you should try in hs to get into a good school, don't freak out so much. It really doesn't matter all that much and this is coming from a former A2C lurker who has made it out the other end. College is the time to buckle up, get that GPA, and do the job grind. But also, carve out time for memories, parties, etc. Life is a long journey. You haven't even gotten to the start point yet. You're in freaking high school. Don't burn out before you even get there.
Edit:
I thought it might be helpful to also provide guidance on how to select a college if you want to do consulting or banking. Honestly, it's a simple algorithm. Forget all the splitting hairs this sub does over #5 vs #7 school.
Step 1: Look at all the schools you got into and determine which ones are target schools ( generally are T20-30 or flagship state schools).
Step 2: Look at where YOU will succeed the most in based on where you think you will get the most club leadership, grade inflation, and social life. Sometimes, highly ranked schools like UC Berkeley can be BRUTAL for club leadership positions which in turn could screw over your resume and not getting an interview invite. It can be brutal to get club leadership at ivies as well since everyone is so ambitious and accomplished. A lower ranked school may be a wiser decision in some cases.
Step 3: Look at other factors like location and other things.
The advice people here give about how to get into "prestige focused fields" like MBB consulting firms is straight garbage. Follow those 3 above steps and you'll be fine.
