Chance a Comeback Story
2023.06.10 23:14 BolshevikSalesman Chance a Comeback Story
Demographics: Rising senior, first gen, Latino male living in LA county with a below-average hs, and eligible for free-lunch
Intended Major: Aerospace Engineering
SAT: 1450 (retaking and aiming in the ballpark of 1500+... not too worried since my target/reach schools are test optional or test blind)
UW GPA and Rank: 65/611... I'll put my 2nd Sem GPA for each year since it best represents how much I was able to make of a given year:
9th - 2.8, 10th - 3.86,11 - 4.0
Hook: Without getting into the personal details, I experienced some devastating family issues when I was little that left my family super financially unstable until about 2 years ago and it resulted in me growing up without my dad and although I did well n middle school, I collapsed from academic exhaustion my freshman year. I then transferred to a different hs sophomore year where I got my bearings and set myself up for when I transferred to a new high school and started developing my passion for math. It got to the point where I finished my prerequisites for Calculus in the same summer and joined Calculus at the third high school I transferred to. I've never had much, but I'm still squeezing water from stone with every chance I get.
TLDR: comeback story where reaching for oppurtunities helped me discover improve and my interests(of which I left a lot out to keep this from paragraph from dragging on too long).
DE:
10th: College Algebra, Trig/Precalc (both in summer)
11th: Statistics (Spring), Intro to Info Sci, Geology (both in summer)
12th (planned): Multi Var Calc, Differential Eqs, and Linear Algebra
AP:
10th: CSP (5)
11th: CSA, Calc BC, Spanish Lang, Chem
I was forced to self study CSA, Spanish, and Chem since the teachers either quit or didn't care to teach the material fast enough to be ready for the AP test. Chem was the worst cuz the teacher had only made it to unit 2 of 9 by the end of the first semester TwT
12th (planned): Gov, Lit, Physics 1
Awards: I only have sports related ones like CIF (swim and cross country) and recognition for placing in the top 5 for my swim events in my league.
Extracurriculars:
Church Volunteering: 1000+ hours total between two churches. Most of it was in the church I grew up in and I started doing it in January 2020 after the last guy stepped down. To keep in accordance with COVID policies once the pandemic kicked up, I'd stay for 3 services all day every sunday before things tapered into 2 services a day and eventually into the regular 1 service. I'd also be volunteering at the Friday mini-services every week and prepping things for the main service. I was essentially the IT guy for my church, being the first responder for issues with the church's hardware (ie projector and computer) and software (the propresenter used to control the preacher's slides and lyrics during the first part of the service). I was also the "guy in the chair" responsible for actually controlling which slides/lyrics would be displayed during services. Aside from the main services, I was regularly setting up events for all sorts of events in the church like helping my mom decorate for the kids' church camps or setting up and taking down supplies for conferences taking place at my church. After I moved away from that area and to a new church, I was recommended by my original pastor to my new one and I'm performing the same role, albeit differently since I'm rotating with other people every Sunday, but I'm still responsible for training new people and I've pushed the new church to improve it's software to propresenter from their software that hasn't been updated in years and I'll also be responsible for training people in using it. I'm also going to be responsible for doing lyrics + slides control during bigger district services which include people from all over the county. This is the longest EC to explain since it's the one I've invested the most into by a light-year and what I've made the biggest impact with.
Swim: 2 seasons (JV in 10th, Varsity in 11th, Captain in 12th)
XC: 1 Season [11th] (I was only with them for ~2 weeks because of the timing of my transfer to this high school, so I was only JV, but I still qualified for CIF and would've been varsity had I been able to join earlier)
CyberPatriot: Co-Captain of the team in it's first year and made it to the states round
Robotics: Programmer and team made it to Worlds (FRC)
Mathlete: smaller club I joined to participate in local competitions
Tutor: Mostly in Trig and Algebra 2
LOR: My Calc teacher is going to be most helpful for Caltech since she herself is a Caltech alumni and she'll be able to brag about me a fair bit since I was the only junior in her BC class (everyone else was a Senior and it took some convincing to my counselor to let me skip AB, which is what every other junior was doing for Calculus). I'm also going to try getting one from my pastor at the church I grew up in since he's been like a dad to me and he's a pretty big figure in the Apostolic Assembly (the national organization my church is a part and of which my pastor's been the president and is currently the secretary).
Schools: UCLA, USC, Caltech, MIT, CSULA, CSUB, CSULB

2023.06.10 23:12 usbuzzer Operation Mincemeat, Guys and dolls or Back to the future?
I have one more slot on my trip and I’m considering these three. Which one would you choose and why?
I know Operation is the hottest show now, but I’m kinda worried about the language barrier (I’m not native and joke-heavy musicals are usually the hardest to keep up, especially since we’re dealing with British humor here). Guys and dolls got rave reviews and I’m curious about the immersive experience and a modern take on this, but I haven’t seen this show ever and usually I prefer more modern-sounding musicals. Back to the future seems like the safest option, but probably is not as exciting also for this exact reason :D.
There’s a slight chance I’ll be able to see two, then it’s probably Back + one of the remaining.
What would you see?

2023.06.10 22:53 wylaxian The Scheduling Hell: a Punishment I Have Earned
I’m a bad DM. I’m getting a little better at it, but the people who play my games are very much doing me a favor, and not the other way around. I’m so bad at DMing that I ended up getting ousted by the first party I tried to run a game for. It was entirely my fault; my games ran gruesomely long, my plot lines were half-baked and improvised, and my table-side manner was atrocious. I have a lot of negative karma from that last game, and I think I may have started caching in on it as of late.
About three months ago, I put out online flyers for a game I was hoping to run, hubristically set in my own half-finished homebrew setting. I made the pitch look pretty and fun, so I got a lot of applications really quickly, and I ended up with the first six players that applied. They all seemed enthusiastic and fun, and we had a great session 0, but then it came time to schedule. Four of my six players were good to work with my original time slot on Fridays, but two of them just went silent. No response, no acknowledgment that I’d even asked them. Nothing. I didn’t want to pry, so I let almost two weeks pass as my four ready players waited patiently to begin. Finally, I cut my losses and ran a game with just the four ready players, and it went wonderfully, and then I broke the news to the two that didn’t respond.
It turns out that one of them was a med student with a full time job whose schedule was completely random. They didn’t ignore me, they just couldn’t give a set time of the week to play, because it was impossible for them to commit. I thought I was being tactful by not prying, but they assumed that I just didn’t care that they hadn’t responded. The other player just didn’t want to talk to me at all, and didn’t even notice that I removed them from the game. I still haven’t heard from them.
Our first session ran swimmingly, and our second went even better. Then, the third rolled around, right in the thick of the narrative, and one of our players (I’ll call them Onesie) had to miss the session. They warned me about eight hours prior to the game, and I had basically no time to explain why their extremely plot-relevant character wasn’t present.
Onesie wouldn’t make it to the next four sessions, and they could only stay for half of the next one they were available for. For about three of those four weeks of absence, Onesie completely ghosted me and the server we held the games on. Another player (I’ll call them Twosie) told me they were having trouble staying up for the sessions, which seemed strange, since we held them at 3 PM EST. It turns out Twosie was operating from Europe, and they’d been staying up till 11 PM for games. However, I couldn’t reschedule, because this was the only day and time anyone had reported they were all consistently available for.
Then, Twosie and another player (I’ll call them Threebie, just to keep the trend alive) both reported they’d miss about three sessions each throughout the summer for exams and college admissions. This was fine, because they told me in advance, but it meant that the fourth player was the only one available for almost the entire month of May. Coupled with Onesie’s unannounced absence, this meant that only one person in my party consistently knew what was happening in the game, because the rest of them couldn’t do weekly sessions. I tried mitigating it and rewriting the story so that the group worked more like a faction than an adventuring party, but nothing really made the narrative move the way I wanted it to. At best, sessions were improvised attempts at tiding over whoever could make it until we could eventually get the group back together in proper.
And eventually, that day came. A few weeks ago, we got the whole group together for a session—at least, we scheduled for it. Four out of the six of them had to bail last minute, and while I was lingering in the VC after the cancellation, Onesie told me they got a summer job, and they’d be missing from the campaign until September. They asked if they could rejoin the game at that point, and I said yes. I still don’t know how to narratively justify it in a way that feels satisfactory.
In total, in the four months I’ve ran this campaign, I have lost two full months of games because of last-minute scheduling issues.
The most ironic part of all of this is that all these players have valid excuses for why they were absent—especially Onesie. None of them are actively trying to sabotage the game, but if sabotage is a competition, they’re some of the best saboteurs I’ve ever seen. And they’re amazing players, too. I’m not even mad at them, I’m just sad I can’t play with them more.

2023.06.10 22:52 m4raud3er DS920+, installation of SYNOLOGY APPS/PLEX APP on unsupported NVME storage pool or HDD
I read quite a lot about DS920+, using NVME drives for storage pool instead of read-write or read-only cache. Currently, I have one NVME drive (from the supported list - A2000 - 500GB) set as storage pool, with one ext4 volume on it, and all of the apps, that don’t need to be installed on a system partition are installed on that NVME drive. NAS makes a daily backup of that NVME drive. Other M2 slot is empty as of now, but will install the same drive in that slot in near future.
There is a noticable difference if Docker, VM and Plex library are installed on NVME drive. However, I do wonder, is there any point in having apps like Synology Drive, Photos, Hyper Backup, Download Station installed on that NVME, since those are the apps, that mainly work with data from HDD drives. Same would be with Plex, I have Plex library on NVME, but should the app also be installed on NVME or it does not matter?
Reason for this post is the fact, that when I installed NVME I created storage pool with BRTFS volume, and it failed in a very short time, it took a lot of apps with it, until I fixed it and made ext4 volume instead. Now it works ok, but still makes me wonder if that will happen again, and due to the nature of my work, I might not be able to fix degraded/failed NVME drive with apps in a desired time.... Another reason is DSM 7.2 update, with its warnings about unsupported stuff/volumes/etc. I did not update yet.
Should I use NVME only for Docker, VM and Plex library, and use another M2 slot for read-only cache, install all of the other apps on HDD volumes? Would that be better performence and stability wise? Or do you fellow redditors install every app on NVME (probably 2 drives in RAID1)?
I use DS920+ for less than 5 Docker containers, 2 VM, Plex library, personal drive/photos shared with few people, storage for raw files and torrenting.

2023.06.10 22:46 J_Evgeny Best online slots USA?
Reddit people, I'm from Philadelphia and looking to find the best online slots in USA. I fairly new to slots, so looking for recommendations.
I'm not quite sure which type of online slots I will like the most, as I haven’t played any. So give me suggestions for the best slots casino and the best slots names as well.
Ideally I'm looking for an online casino with a wide selection of slots, I want to have those classic fruit slot machines to some newer ones I’ve seen in Youtube live streams.
The casino needs to be licensed and regulated and payouts has to be fast.
So if you have suggestions for the best online slots in USA, I would appreciate it!

2023.06.10 22:34 furtive Trip summary: 4 nights in Vegas at MGM Grand
We did 4 nights in Vegas this week, Mon through Friday, staying at the MGM grand.
MGM Grand Hotel: nice hotel, well located not too far down the strip. We had a grand king room and it was clean and well appointed and while not brand new, didn’t look worn down or dated. it was a perfect fit for the budget, and the confidence of having a smoke free room was great. We didn’t eat on site except for a lazy buffet day/pool day. Crowd was all conference and low key from Mon-Wed, not too busy at all, then on Thursday the unwashed masses began to appear, and the nightlife also became much more vibrant.
MGM Buffet: I got a two for one voucher through the myVEGAS Slots app and about 9 days of play. The buffet vouchers always seemed to be sold out but about 48hrs before my departure I managed to get one. Buffet was fine, the food and selection was good, the look was a bit dated. New menu items started showing up around 11am. Probably not worth the price for two full adults, but with the 2 for 1 it was worth it, the wife was very happy and I saved $30+ because of the app.
MGM pool: Lovely, we spent two full days here. All pools and river were open except the Splash pool, which looked okay but was closed the whole time, probably because things weren’t crowded. No problem finding good free seating, much harder to find free seating with shade but we got lucky on the Tuesday and there was decent cloud coverage on the Thursday. All seating on lazy river island was reservation only. Way quieter on a Tue than on a Thu. Didn’t get a floatie, they were $25-30+tax depending on the size, but never felt we needed one. Bag check was low key.
Cheap eats: we did Shake Shack and In n Out burgers and both were great, with Shake Shake winning by the tiniest of margins. Oh, and Evel Pie for a quick slice away from the bustle of Freemont.
Expensive eats: we did Momofuku and enjoyed the menu, best item (hard to believe) was the brussel sprouts and cauliflower.
Cheap activities: We enjoyed the volcano at the Mirage more than the fountain at the Bellagio, maybe because we came in with zero expectation. Too bad it won’t be there for long, glad we saw it. Pinball Hall of Fame was also a great value, we split $20 between the two of us and were there for well over an hour. Conservatory at Bellagio was way too tacky for our tastes.
Other activities: Blue Man Group was great, make sure you buy tickets from the MGM site and not from the BMG/Ticketmaster site, saved about $40/seat that way. Cirque de Soleil O had the most impressive stage set I’ve ever seen, magical really. Omega Mart was fun, we had 11:20am booking but would recommenf you book for 10am and make sure you’re on some drugs first. Vegas Neon Sign museum was good but short and felt a bit like a graveyard, lots of potential but $20/head was a bit high. Freemont was Freemont, but driving from Freemont down the strip at night was great and felt like out of a movie.
Side note: We rented a car on the Wednesday and did Red Rock National Park, Area 15, In-N-Out Burger, Pinball Hall of Fame, Neon Sign Museum and Freemont all in a day, it was totally worth it and added to the Vegas/Desert experience. Our only regret was that we could have spent 4-8 hours hiking at Red Rock but had tight 11:20am reservations for Omega Mart so that part felt rushed (we’re from Canada, seeing cactus and sand in the wild is wild!)
Other tips: don’t buy booze in the hotels/casinos, way cheaper at CVS/Wallgreens, same for food/snacks whenever possible. Uber from airport was $6 cheaper than taxi.
Canadian Tip: ATMs are a scam here. Casinos/hotels charge $9.99 just in ATM fee, it was 1/3 of that at Walgreen/CVS. And that’s not the half of it. Get your cash once and be done with it, and watch out, they will offer to “exchange” your currency during the purchase path, decline because there is a huge markup, let your bank do it instead. For example, I took out $400 USD, ATM offered to do the exchange with total coming out to $607.88 CAD but by declining that and having it use the exchange from my bank I paid $561.24, saving me $47 in scam markup.

2023.06.10 22:28 Black_Trinity Destiny Asked for an Affirmative Defense of Pride in Schools
In a recent video on the Destiny Clips channel,
Destiny was questioning whether or not schools need Pride Month. He asked for people to present a compelling argument for why it may be necessary, so I guess I’ll give it a go.
The summary of Destiny’s argument is that LGBT topics are currently an extremely charged topic in the US, and that he has worries about turning our schools into political battlegrounds, where kids may get caught in the crossfire between both extremes. He explicitly says that he doesn’t have a problem with teachers talking about LGBT issues in schools, but he also is distrustful of activists not having these conversations in a responsible manner.
I can definitely understand why he has these feelings. I’ve felt similar in some regards.
There are a lot of legitimate weird people that make the LGBT community look completely crazy. I don’t think adults should be doing shit like this around children, whether drag queens or cis women. It just feels
super inappropriate. There is definitely room for legitimate criticism with regards to some people in these spaces acting inappropriately, but I still don’t feel the correct response is to become hyper skittish and conciliatory around topics that deal with LGBT youth.
Minority Communities
Destiny talks about how America has become a lot more accepting when it comes to gay people. And while I agree with this, I think most people here can agree that Destiny’s recent Redpill arc has opened a lot of people’s eyes when it comes to how a lot of minority communities are still
very openly homophobic and transphobic.
I’m Black and I’ve lived my entire life in predominantly Black neighborhoods.
This was my High School’s demographics (90% Black, 7.5% Hispanic, 2.5% Other). I’m completely straight, but I’ve always been sympathetic towards gay people since a very young age because it was always clear to me just how much harder my life would be if the people around me thought I was gay.
There’s a ton of LGBT youth in minority communities that don’t have a safe space to simply be themselves IRL. Pride Month is a time in the year where there can be a specific focus on LGBT issues and provides a space for students to air out their grievances, find other students that are similar to them, and helps socialize the rest of the student body with their LGBT peers.
Tertiary Benefits of our Compulsory Education System
The contributions our schools make to our society has never simply been simply educating our youth. For example, due to the fact that schools force kids to leave their homes and interact with teachers and other students, this allows for a lot of cases of parental abuse to be discovered because schools are a place where abusive parents don’t have the ability to 100% monitor and control their child.
In a similar vein to this, even though we can say that society as a whole has become significant less
openly anti-LGBT in the past 20 years, this doesn’t quite account for how people behave in the privacy of their homes, where there is no risk of social repercussions, especially when it comes to the things they tell their children.
For a lot of kids, especially those growing up in extremely religious households, school may be the only place they have to escape their parents and be more open about who they truly are. Having a month dedicated to children in situations like these is probably extremely important for their development into adulthood because it allows them to more freely express themselves, which they may not have the luxury to do in their own homes.
Pride Represents American Values
Destiny has often talked about how one of America’s core values is being able to gather people from all types of different backgrounds and have them be able to live together in a single country. Although we can all probably agree that there are some people that go too far and use “Pride” as an excuse to be pretty weird/inappropriate, the essence of what Pride is
supposed to be is an extension of that of that same American value.
The idea behind Pride Month is to preach acceptance and highlight all of the different types of people there are within the LGBT community. But, unfortunately, there currently is an issue with some extreme people on the Left acting inappropriately, and there are extreme people on the Right trying to paint those people as representative of the entire LGBT movement.
But the idea that we would start to buckle because of these extremes on the Left and Right is ridiculous. Pride perfectly aligns with our values as Americans, and being afraid to have our schools openly support this would actually be going against the very core of our values as Americans.
Conclusion
We should be able to have Pride Month and show our support for LGBT people while also calling out those on the Left that hurt the movement by doing weird shit. I feel like that’s the balance that needs to be made. One thing I feel Destiny can improve on is that he needs to spend more time actually arguing
for things instead of almost arguing
against things.
Whenever Destiny argues with people on the Right about LGBT issues, he mostly focuses on pointing out the issues in their arguments (contradictions, hypocrisies, etc). And when Destiny argues with people on the Left about LGBT issues, he does the same. He spends very little time actually highlighting what he believes his ideal society would look like. Due to this, people on the Right can sometimes feel like Destiny is “cucked” by trans people because of the types of arguments he uses against them. And people on the Left feel like Destiny is anti-LGBT and “moving to the Right” because of the types of arguments he uses against them.
Anyway, the main point of this post is to argue for why it probably would be a bad idea to just completely cut Pride related things out of school. I get why Destiny has some reservations against some of this stuff, but the focus probably should just be on calling out the weirdos and spending more time actually advocating for how we can responsibly talk to young people about stuff related to being LGBT.

2023.06.10 21:58 seapeary7 Coffee locks don’t work the way you think!
So, I’m pretty annoyed how much sorcerers are misunderstood and overlooked for the most part by the D&D community, and even further, WOTC. Idk how many times I’ve seen folks claiming how sorcs are only really good for multiclassing with paladins, warlocks, etc.
One of the most popularized “did you know you can do x and break y in d&d if you multiclass a and b” is the notorious “Coffeelock”… and I’m here to tell everyone how misinformed they are if they heard of this and understood it as “unlimited spell slots”. Let’s begin:
People forget that you can never have more sorcery points than designated for your level on the sorcerer table. Coffee locks don’t work by stacking up SPs and then converting those to SS as you can’t save them like silver coins in your pocket! Further, the higher you grow in levels the more diminishing returns you get for your flexible casting. It’s not a 1:1 ratio!
A 3rd level SS (spell slot) to SP (sorcery point) conversion rate is 3 SP from a 3rd level SS but it costs 5 (yes, 5!!!) SP to make a 3rd level spell slot. So you lose one to two levels worth of SP by doing this. If you are decent at math, you can see that this is basically a more complicated way of doing an Arcane Recovery. And it takes 10 levels of investment to pull off.
A quick example is a lvl 10 5 sorc/5 warlock with two 3rd level pact slots. Converting those to SP before a short rest gives you 6 SP, meaning you can only gain 5 of those (unless you take metamagic adept feat), leaving you with one 3rd level SS for your sorc spells. If you have the metamagic adept feat you can gain a single 1st level spell slot as well. If you have full SPs before your short rest you end up with two 3rd level SS, but this only happens once per day since you’d have to take three short rests to get back to full SPs and Pact slots and you’d only have accomplished regaining 2 3rd level SSs.
At this point, you could have just used your pact slots instead of sorcerer slots and taken a short rest to restore them as normal.
This is slightly viable if a party member has taken catnap, but as a 3rd level spell available only to long-rest casters, it drains their precious resources to replenish yours for what is effectively a complicated party trick.
Keep in mind this is a 10th level scenario, and even then it’s barely viable. Good luck trying to use this “hack” RAW.
P.S. You also cannot get a spell slot that is higher than you can cast at any level using SP as flexible casting specifically prohibits that RAW. I see many people argue that you can upcast your spells to 4th level at sorc level 5, but you cannot RAW.
Anyways, thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.

2023.06.10 21:58 aseck27 How to occupy a toddler who has to stay off his foot?
My 20 month old has a buckle fracture in his foot. We can’t get to an orthopedist until Monday, and until then it’s a strict no-weight bearing order. Any ideas for keeping him occupied that don’t involve standing/walking?
ETA: he’s currently in a fiberglass cast, too, so water is a no go.

2023.06.10 21:53 HfUfH Know the difference, Valid Vs. Invalid criticisms of spellcasting
2023.06.10 21:53 GoodGrades What do you think is the biggest improvement and largest downgrade from Breath of the Wild? (Some SPOILERS for the Wind and Fire Temples in the text)
Biggest improvement: For me, it’s got to be the new abilities. I loved the abilities in Breath of the Wild, but they’re at a completely different level in Tears of the Kingdom. In BotW, I rarely used abilities outside of shrines or specific puzzles that required them. Other than bombs, I hardly ever used abilities in combat. There are a lot of hilarious videos online of people stasising a rock that a Bokoblin is about to throw, with him looking super confused that he’s unable to throw it, but on a practical level I found it too tricky to aim in real-time to reliably use (SO glad recall freezes time!). It’s funny to hit enemies over the head with magnesis’d items, but it just did too little damage to be consistently useful.
In TotK, I constantly use my abilities in fights because they’re so useful. I feel like I've learned to fight and think like a Zonai warrior, which feels amazing. When fighting a miniboss, I often end up using 3 or even all 4 abilities multiple times over the course of the fight. Outside of combat, in BotW I very rarely used abilities in conjunction with other abilities, but I use abilities concurrently all the time in TotK. Ultrahand and recall go together hand in glove, and it’s almost impossible imagining the game with one but not the other. For traversal, both ascend and ultrahand are QOL gamechangers. In older open-world games, I’d often worry about dropping off a cliff to check out something below, knowing how much of a pain it would be to get back up. Ascend completely changes all of that, liberating exploration. Ultrahanding vehicles to fight the Yiga in the Depths is probably the most fun I’ve had not just in this game, but in games in general.
Fuse is overall an improvement on BotW’s already excellent weapons system, but it’s probably the most contentious of the new abilities. In BotW, despite all the yabbering about weapon degradation, I was far more likely to run into the opposite “problem” – I’d have too many good weapons on hand and not enough slots to store them in. In BotW, it’s often pretty straightforward deciding what weapon to throw out – usually the weakest one unless it’s unique in some way (e.g.: an elemental weapon). The decision is much less straightforward in TotK since sometimes you’ll have a decently strong fused weapon on-hand, but pick up a stronger base weapon. Do you throw out the fused weapon for more potential strength in the future, or do you hold on to the creation you’ve already made? Having to make more decisions like this sometimes bogs the game down a bit. Likewise, the choices can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming and require a lot of menuing, again slowing down the pace of the game. I think the tradeoff is ultimately worth it for the joy of creating unique and special weapons and arrows to suit specific circumstances, and for giving you a much stronger incentive to fight monsters, but it is a tradeoff.
SOME SPOILERS FOR THE WIND AND FIRE TEMPLES BELOW
Biggest downgrade: Without a doubt the sage abilities versus the champion abilities in BotW. Many people have complained a lot about this one, but unfortunately I think the problems are deeper than what many of the complaints I've seen have addressed. To start, yes, the controls for the sage abilities are horrendous. In BotW, the champion abilities are all awesome, with some being straight gamechangers (Mipha’s Grace and Revali’s Gale), and they are all seamlessly integrated into the control scheme. The two sage abilities I’ve gotten so far (Tulin and Yunobo) are not only less useful, but they’ve backfired against me multiple times before I finally turned them off for good. For example, Tulin has blasted items off sky islands, causing me to have to re-fight a miniboss once, and Yunobo has thrown himself into bomb flowers I was trying to pick up and caused flying vehicles to crash with his weight.
Their abilities aren’t amazing, but they can come in handy at times. Which is why it’s so annoying that you can’t just use the abilities when you want to use them without having to either constantly fiddle with the menu or turn on spirit summons who fight for you when you don’t necessarily want that. And when they are on, they take up a ton of screen space and are constantly fluttering around and distracting you. In a game where observing your environment is paramount, having them take up this much screen space actively hurts the experience and is unacceptable. And this is with just two of them – I can’t imagine how bad it would be with all four.
Unfortunately, the problem is even deeper than this. The abilities also make very little sense in terms of the plot. When you get the recall “secret stone” (seriously, who came up with this awful term for magatama?) it gives you a brand-new ability you never had before. In theory, the magatama should have given Tulin the power to create gusts and Yuobo the power to smash through rocks. But, bizarrely, they already know these abilities before acquiring the “secret stones.” So what exactly do the magatama do? Apparently they allow them to summon a weird ghost version of themselves to use the same abilities they always been able to do to help Link. It makes zero sense that both stones do effectively the same thing, leading to narrative incoherence. What should have happened is Link and the sage first go on an adventure to find the magatama, which gives the sage their respective powers and allows you to access the temple. Then, once you’ve beaten the temple, the sage should spirit bond with you, allowing you to use the power later in the game.
(Also, this is a gripe, but the sage should decide to spirit bond with you out of their own free will, instead of being bound to it because their ancestor from thousands of years made a pledge. That was a stupid narrative decision that robs the sages of all agency.)
The sage system needs to be radically reworked, although I’m not exactly holding out hope that it’ll happen. Obviously we’re never getting the narrative changes, but improving just the mechanics would go a very long way. Here’s what should happen: first you should be able to toggle if you want their abilities to be available to you in the specific situations they’re designed for (e.g.: Tulin while paragliding, Yunobo while on vehicle – and Yunobo should be weightless since he’s in spirit form after all). You should also be able to access their abilities on the ground by holding down on the D-pad and selecting them via a radial quick menu like the other abilities. Finally, you should be able to turn their spirit summons on separately from their abilities. If you do turn them on to help you in combat, they should only appear when you are in combat, and never clutter up the screen when you’re just exploring.
These changes will almost certainly never happen, unfortunately. At the end of the day, I just play the game with them turned off 99% of the time. It’s actually pretty big praise for the game that by far the biggest weakness can just be turned off and ignored – at least it doesn’t actively harm the experience. But man, I remember how excited I would be to complete a divine beast in BotW and receive an awesome new ability. I never would have even considered turning those abilities off. It’s a more bitter experience to complete a temple and receive what effectively amounts to absolutely nothing.
P.S.: It may seem like I spent a lot of time focused on the negatives, but to be clear I think TotK is one of the top 5 games I’ve ever played. I just like complaining.

2023.06.10 21:40 AgreeableDrive7729 LPT : use your work tools to help you with your personal life as well – there is a reason they are employed at work
Working in a company often leads to using different tools to help you get more done. This is a capitalist world and these tools are used for a reason, they bring value which means more money for companies, so these tools are used for their efficiency. From this thought, I wonder why people do not use them for their personal life as well. I have thought about different tools that could be nice to use : Calendar — Your day will always fill itself with something so if you don’t plan your day you will probably see yourself lost in endless scrolling on TikTok. This does not mean you cannot enjoy time spend doing nothing valuable but just being more conscious about what you want to do with your time will prevent you from being a slave of low-value apps such as social media. Google Calendar or Apple Calendar can be your best friend for this. Calendly — It may seem weird to use an appointment service for your personal life but it is less stupid than you would think. A friend wants to meet for lunch or to do something with you someday ? Stop messaging back and forth to find your availabilities and just send them a link to your personal Calendly, they will be able to book an appointment with you (and since your calendar will be up to date, it will only shows slots when you are available) and the sweet bonus is that you will both have an event created in your calendar so no more excuses to miss an appointment. Task manager — People with clear and written goals have more chances to get in the right direction and to accomplish them. Whether you have personal goals or projects (such as planning a wedding, planning a trip…), having a task manager where you can write all the steps of the way and get a clear perspective of where you are going. Also, using a to-do app is a way to stop forgetting about stuff, like « Cancel my Netflix subscription in 30 days » or « Checkin with my grandparents every 10 days ». It’s a digital assistant and once you use a task manager, you will never go back. I recommend using a tool such as Todoist. CRM — If one of your goals is to improve your social life and relationships, it may not be a stupid idea to use a CRM (Customer Relationship Management). Obvioulsy, you do not something as complete as in the professional area but this kind of tool can help you remember key information about the people around you. Some friend mention they are vegetarian ? Note it down so you don’t cook meat the next time you will meet. Did they share their size ? Keep it on your CRM so you don’t buy a teeshirt in the wrong size when choosing a gift. Spreadsheets — Spreadsheets are often associated with complex numbers and tasks that nobody want to do, but they can be a very good ally. Getting richer is not always about making more money but often about spending less. Try this : open your banking app's monthly budget view (or use an app like Bankin or Linxo), and alongside it, open a Google Sheet to record your expenses. Break it down into categories: 'Essential Bills' for rent, utilities, and taxes; 'Other Expenses' for shopping, dining out, subscriptions, etc. Seeing the numbers clearly laid out can lead to realizations like, 'I didn't realize I had so many subscriptions, maybe I should cancel a few' or 'My shopping expenses have spiked in the past three months, it's time to reel it in'. This exercise might even reveal you're spending more than you're earning! Either way, you'll gain a clear overview of how your money is being used, without having to manually enter each transaction as your app already sorts them into categories. Video Conferencing — Video conferencing isn't just for work meetings. Tools like Zoom or Google Meet can connect you with family and friends and even have features like screen sharing, making them perfect for things like watching movies together, sharing photos, or even hosting virtual game nights. In essence, video conferencing tools can help maintain and strengthen your personal relationships, regardless of the distance. Time Tracking — Using a tool like this, even just for a week, can give you a real insight into where your time is going and make you take better decisions about your time. Categorize your activities into 'Personal' (those joyful, value-free moments), 'Self-Development' (like reading or exercising), 'Mandatory' (such as commuting), and 'Lost Time' (unintentional social media browsing). and record your time, in the end you will see how your time is distributed, you might spot opportunities to cut down on lost time and increase those precious personal or self-development moments. It's all about maximizing the joy and value in your day!

2023.06.10 21:17 pampecagao27 My laptop won’t detect another RAM module
A couple hours ago i got another module of 8gb ram for my laptop (ryzen 3 5300u, 8gb ddr4 3200mhz, 512 gb m.2 ssd), and when i try to boot up the laptop it turns on as normal but only appears to have 8gb, which is strange because in CPU z both modules are shown as installed and working, but in windows only one shows as working one of them, i checked in msconfig in case that it was limited to just 8gb, but it doesn’t, and also if i try to boot the laptop with a module in only one of the two slots just one of them would work, and with the other it just doesn’t, can it be a slot problem?(both modules are the same brand, model, voltage, capacity etc)
