I am wondering about my sister so I can gain a better understanding. I am currently upset and am aware of this. Here's a bit of background about our family. My dad gave no positive attention to my sister, or me growing up, he is a control freak, he did nothing with us as children other than go shopping, or to the park as a family a few times, and family vacations to the same boring location over and over again (he is scared of change). My mum spent her life with my dad, unhappy, trapped, and controlled, and has to deal with him getting drunk every night. My mum is nice, simple minded though, and is so placid and easy going (both of her parents left her when she was very young and then she met my dad) but she did nothing about it and put up with it, even though she lives in misery in front of negative UK tv drama shows in the evening, while my dad drinks his vodka and repeats himself, whilst pausing the tv to comment to the room every so often!. They have no friends, at 73 my dad is still drinking a bottle of vodka a day, and it shows. His temper is terrible. If I give a list of things that I've noticed about my sister, how might she be diagnosed? I am on vacation with her at the moment and it's not going well. I am very sensitive, which doesn't help in dealing with her, here are some things that have happened, and some traits of hers that have hurt me in the past, I am wondering what might be going on. - she is very judgemental, and doesn't think about the big picture, and where her judgements might be coming from. - she is controlling (kind of like my dad who is a control freak. Over the years, even though she knows my dad is explosive, she hasn't given up, she'll push, and say things she know will really offend him, where as I would think, OK I know how this is going to go, avoid at all costs, she'll still go there and end up in a fight with him. - when my friend died in a motorcycle accident, I told her he wasn't happy in life for various reasons, and she responded with 'well maybe it's good that he passed away'. - today my foot was hurting and I needed a band aid. we were heading to get on a boat in spain, I asked her to wait for me while I got a band aid. So when I get back 3 mins later, she's gone, and has taken my mum with her t find the boat boarding area. I panicked and looked around, went in the wrong direction, got really stressed, she basically went to board the boat without me and tried giving me directions there. I was clear about where I was going and that i'd be back in a minute, but she had to leave to get the boat, which I found selfish and inconsiderate, we had enough time. Having no ticket, no idea what the name of the boat she had bought tickets for, anxiety, and feeling abandonment, I gave her a peace of my mind when I found her and told her you don't leave your family - your brother, when he's asked you to wait a minute. We are in a new country in a busy part with boats EVERYWHERE in all directions.Not that its relevant, but my mum chimes in with 'you shouldn't have wondered off!!!'. argh! - my sister is clumsy, quite ego based, and seems to think highly of herself but in an ego way. - she can't drive a car, she failed her test over 20 times before giving up, which deep inside I felt, that if she did drive she would crash. - I once taught my sister how to double click on a mouse, and she couldn't do it. - she is heavy footed, and has a bad knee as a result (stomps about a bit) - she can be nice in offering water, food, and making nice gestures, but after she does something more serious, like leave me ditched, I find it hard to accept these gestures immediately afterwood, although she is trying, I just have a knee jerk reaction where I want to be left alone. - she doesn't seem to consider me properly. she does in a surface level type way. but even this trip, i'd asked her to include me. she books it, then tells me after, I reluctantly buy my tickets too, even though the hotels only offer 2 beds, and no 3 beds, so it's quite expensive for me. - she isn't smart mentally at playing board games, or sports. - she is unhappy with her weight (been dieting forever since young) always talks about my mums weight, what my mum is eating, and judges. -Once I took my top off a few years back, I was in shape (not overweight anyway) and she grinned and looked me up and down, not in a pervy way, but in a judgemental way, and I find it hard relaxing, knowing the judgements might be there. - she is VERY animated. She is usually either frowning or has a weird look on her face, she wears her inside on the outside. I will say, that I have a bit of this also. but nowhere near as bad. - she has had cognative behavioural therapy a long time ago and found it beneficial, but I think that she needs more, she didnd't follow up with any of this type stuff after it seems like a wasted effort (although maybe not) - Once I huffed because she asked me to get something after a long day and I had just sat down, I was tired, and she exploded in rage. Creaming somewhat like a demon. Or george castanza's father, if you know who this character is! - This was taught by my dad (blasting if the conversation doesn't go his way) and she resorts to this sometimes and it's akward and when she does I just cave and leave it it's too much. I grew out of this in my early 20's after being away from my father for the last 20 years, and I'm happy I did because I know it's abusive behavior and unacceptable. - She does try to make amends, but again it just feels like... after the treatment I've had enough... and I'm stuck on vacation with her sitting in my hotel room because i've had enough of it for a day (feeling like a loser over here with some guilt because I am not handling her very well). - She isn't good with riding bikes, her motor skills seem ok at first glance, but she is pretty clumsy. One the way here, she almost sent my mums luggage to france, instead of spain. - she has never saved for a home. she spends her money on vacations, multuple vacations every year. - With this vacation, she doesn't appreciate I've spent 5000 on the trip. And planned everything, asking me if iher plans are OK, but really, she knows what she wants to do and will get v upset if I interfear. I did suggest a town I wanted to visit, which she quickly shot down. She does however say we can pick a day to do all the things she wants, and asks me what I want to do sometimes, but I feel reluctant to want to work with her because it feels like we are not playing on an even playing field to begin with, so I just give up and do what she wants because it feels crappy. - My 19 y/o daughter doesn't appreciate her meatheadedness and didn't want to come on the trip because of her, which I understood and didn't give her a hard time over. She has hung out with her before and finds her mental behavior annoying. - She calls herself a crazy cat lady!! proudly and strangley! - after some drinks recently at a family gathering, after a few drinks, she shouted / proclaimed in a proud angry righteous way 'I"M A CRAZY CAT LADY AND I DONT F'INGGGG CARE'. I just looked at her stone cold sober like... j christ... (she has two cats and likes to pet random cats like most cat lovers do. - She is very surface level. Somewhat obvlivious, I am more of a deep thinker, much more empathetic and thoughtful when it comes to others, which makes being around her difficult. I am really into self awareness, because i've had a lot to work through. Although I know this isn't about me (this is where the part of being being upset is probably not keeping me on topic). - She is narrow minded at the best of times. I realise some of the above might seem laughable. Doing my best to paint a picture, and probably venting as well. I am familiar with narcism, but I am hoping for a more accurate idea of what might be going on, obviously I won't take it firmly as a diagnosis, but I am just wondering what could be going on with her mentally, is she on the spectrum or something else?

2023.06.10 22:57 jonslashtroy Got a few mercenaries to max, what do i do with renown?

Question 1: if i take a renown treasure level 1, does that mean that the character always has it active? or does it upgrade treasures i get when im in a bounty?
E.g. Gruff can get "+1 spell damage for all night elves taurens and trolls" and that's easily my favourite thing since all the nature mercs I play are those races. Is that now a permanent battlecry or does the buff I get for winning a fight get +1? (Obviously I don't always get that one when I win a fight.)
Next, what are the best choices for where to put my renown points? I've not spent a single one yet (I upgraded some spells and armours in a poor order and regret it) so I'm being quite careful with them.
So far my maxes are:S Samuro, Cariel, Xyrella, Cornelius, Guff, Anacondra, Millhouse, Tamsin. I'm currently going for Bru'kan next while I level up random things and advance tasks,

I am new to the FatFIRE community and also at the beginning of my journey. I recently graduated and broke into an exciting niche in commercial real estate (CRE).
Top-level goal: FatFIRE @5M + 100% equity owned house in 20 years.
Stats: Job: Real Estate Private Equity (Hospitality, <£1B AUM fund). City: London (HCOL) Salary: 30k + bonus (~60k total). Lifestyle: 40/50h workweeks, time for fitness and friends, studying/hobbies on the weekends.
I’m currently trying to develop my strategy to reach this goal. What are some of the most important milestones that I should reach during my journey? What attitude/strategy should I adopt to reach my goals. Do you have any advice on how to navigate and optimise my career?

For those who are aware of steinhardts guide to the eldritch hunt I'm currently playing a dhampire level 5 absolute chapter Jaeger, but I'm uninterested in the higher levels of the class so I'm thinking it's time to multiclass.
The caveat is since I've played pretty much everything in 5e over the years I'm specifically looking for homebrew classes this time round, specifically things that work well with a single level dip since I'm not sure how much longer the campain will go on.
I'm currently wielding a rapier and a pistol, wear studded leather armor and have a magic item that allows a teleport equal to my proficiency bonus.
My stats are str (10) Dex (20) con (18) int (16) wis (16) cha (4) and have the focused hunter feat from steinhardts which pairs well with my Jaeger.
So any recommendations for a good level 1 homebrew dip

I am an educator seeking to transition into a software development role. I have a degree in social studies background, but I am currently completing an online Computer Science degree through WGU. I'm nearly done with the program, and I have been applying to Software internships and entry level roles over the past few months, but I have only received rejections (with the exception of one company which sent me an OA)

Hello All! I'm doing some basic polling and playtesting with an option I'm about 50/50 on for my game Project Chimera: E.C.O. currently in alpha development.
Basic information:
Players take on the role of a black ops super soldier working for a PMSC (Chimera Group International). The game heavily focuses on stealth and social objective completion over combat, ie, there is no incentive for combat, it's a way to achieve an objective, but it's the worst ROI since it is potentially lethal and consumes resources much faster than other methods and doesn't offer special rewards, also there's not really "loot" per se like in a DnD game. Loot is most likely to be information that advances the plot.
The game is crunchy, while easy to learn the core game loops (there's a 1 page overview that will get any experienced RPer able to sit for their first session and 3 points of entry: pregen, table roll/select, and full custom) it's mostly that it has lots of flexibility and character options, which is great for players that want that, but it's a known limitation it will not appeal to rules light/casual gamer preferred experiences.
The game takes place in a five minutes into the future dystopian mirror alt earth with cyberpunk and sci fi elements. Characters have access to things like advanced training, gear, bionics, psionics, super powers, feats, etc. A character's starting template doesn't restrict them, it just figures out their initial boosted areas, ie if you take the bionics aspect, your character will have more bionics than a general build character, you can still access everything else, but it's more a question of where you want the thematic focus of the character to be. All characters are baseline competent in the areas of stealth, socialization, survival and gunplay/combat (you absolutely can use HTH and melee with extensive options, but as one might expect, guns are usually more effective, though those options definitely have their place).As such consider these things to be relevant to potential players, ie if you hate stealth/social, prefer rules light casual, opinions are less relevant in this case because it's not a game built for that kind of player.
The Actual Concern:
Currently I'm considering removing the concept of a critical hit in combat doing double damage automatically and there's a good amount of relevant information:
  1. Players have others ways to boost damage
  2. This wouldn't remove the option, it just expands the option to more options.

The concept works like this:
Characters have 4 meta currencies, one of them is called Essence.
This is a daily regen pool and is used for "enhanced performance" of some kind. Presently it can be used for things like a small bonus to a roll for a save, or gaining +1 standard action on a turn, remove a level of exhaustion, rally, etc., the point being it does have a level of utility. It might be also be used to fuel a special ability from a feat, augment a powepsionic, allow for a special application move, etc.
Crits occur in combat (skills can also crit) similar to PF2e in that you can gain one on a nat 20 or if you exceed the TN by 10+ (in most cases, there are other ways to finagle this but they are niche).
Essence is described in game as:
Essence represents the total abstract humanity of a character as well as their general combined physical and mental well being, focus, and general willpower. It is utilized to overcome general limitations and perform above expectations. Essence is most commonly associated with the concept of the superego.
The proposed change would be a character gains 1 essence (up to max pool, this can be spent immediately if it exceeds) on a crit, but double damage would cost 2 essence.
A typical early level character is likely to have somewhere around 10-20 essence total in the pool (could be more or less but this is an estimated average).
Some positives of this proposed change:
This provides another opportunity for essence regen for players.
This provides additional utility and tactical choice in combat (ie they might opt for double damage and spend the extra, bank it, apply a status effect instead, etc.), particularly because more damage is not always a preferred option. In many cases disabling an opponent quickly and without drawing attention is preferred over killing them, and in some cases capturing a target alive is the mission itself.
This can open up other combat applications for essence use.
Some negatives of the proposed change:
Adding a player choice here can slow down combat for indecisive players.
This puts more emphasis/reward on combat, which isn't really the intent of the game. Essence is easier to earn in game in other ways, but adding incentive in combat assumes that this is a reward for player behavior, when open combat is, by design, meant to be more of an "oops, we screwed up moment". With that said, characters are black ops super soldiers so the game is less about never being in combat and more about trying to stave off combat as much as possible and if you have to enter combat, doing so with control of the battlefield in a smart and tactical manner.
This requires additional book keeping. Not a whole lot, we already have to track essence use, but we now have to consider that it will fluctuate more often (as part of combat).
Why I'm split:
The game is built and meant to be focused on providing experiences other than combat (ie the goal is to get as far away from typical game loop of "punch monster until it drops loot" as possible), but it would be fair to say it also has extremely robust options and tactical choice for combat. To be clear, the combat is highly tactical and has more moves available in and out of combat than probably any other known game on the market, but it's also not meant to appeal specifically to "combat only players" and the system design directly reflects this.Basically my design values are in a bit of conflict here.
Obviously I'll play test this regardless, but I'm curious about:
Are there additional reasons foagainst this?
Given the premises of the game, which do you think is likely to be more fun for you specifically? For the type of gamer this game is meant to appeal to? Why?

For the fifth World Cup of the season, the competition circuit headed to Brixen, Italy, where only one of the four women who have already won a Bouldering gold medal this season was registered to compete: Natalia Grossman of the USA. Veteran – and Prague silver medalist – Janja Garnbret (SLO) elected to sit out this competition to continue training.
Qualifiers
This was a high-top qualification round, with the top 15 climbers each climbing at least four of the five boulders. Three women tied for the #1 seed coming out of qualis: 1) Hannah Meul (GER) – silver medalist at Hachioji who sat out the past few comps due to illness, 2) Stasa Gejo (SRB) – who made her first finals in over ten competitions last weekend in Prague, and 3) Julija Kruder (SLO), in a somewhat-surprising result for a veteran who’s competed at the IFSC level for nearly ten years but hadn’t had a top-ten finish since Munich in 2016. Rounding out the top five were Ayala Kerem (ISR) in fourth, and Madison Fischer (CAN) and Oceania Mackenzie (AUS) in a tie for fifth. A number of finalists from prior 2023 World Cups made it to semis again, including Matsufuji Anon (JPN) qualifying in 7th, Natalia and Luo Zhilu (CHN) qualifying in a two-way tie for 11th, Seo Chaehyun (KOR) and Annie Sanders (USA) tying for 13th, and Prague bronze medalist Flavy Cohaut (FRA) qualifying in 17th. The top-20 also saw a number of season newcomers making it through to semis, including Sandra Hoffensitz (GER), Lucka Rakovec (SLO), and Italian climber Miriam Fogu, who was pleased to qualify on her “home turf.” Many in the climbing community were thrilled to see Elnaz Rekabi (IRI) come back to the competition circuit, in pursuit of her Paris 2024 dreams, after she was disciplined by the Iranian government for removing her hijab at a competition nearly two years ago.
Semis
The first three boulders of semis were powerful, overhung blocs requiring strong body tension, followed by a slab on B4 – a challenging way to wrap up a tough round in which only two climbers topped all four boulders. Natalia nabbed the top seed, followed closely by Chaehyun who was ranked second only on attempts. Stasa and Ayala both topped three boulders and qualified in 4th and 5th respectively, while Oceana and Johanna Farber (AUT) squeaked into finals with two tops each. Nakagawa Ryu (JPN) and Hannah finished in a heartbreaking 7th and 8th position respectively. Julija, after coming into semis in the top seed, had to settle for 9th.
Finals
B1 began with a run-and-jump coordination move laterally to the zone hold, followed by a mantle move from the zone to the finish hold; some competitors initially read this mantle as a second dyno. First out to climb was Johanna. She struggled to figure out the first coordination move and, after several attempts, finally managed to get the zone but was unable to figure out the second half of the problem and had to settle for a zone only. Oceana Mackenzie (AUS) figured out the coordination move on her third attempt and was the first to use the mantle beta, which worked well and gave her a top in three attempts total. Ayala Kerem (ISR) also used the mantle beta and topped in five attempts, followed by Stasa Gejo (SRB) who managed to flash the problem - much to her own delight. Seo Chaehyun (KOR) tried to rush the mantle and had to settle for only a zone, while top-seeded Natalia climbed last and topped in three attempts. With four out of six climbers ultimately getting a top on B1, rankings came down to attempts; Stasa nabbed the gold medal position with her flash, followed by Oceania in silver and Natalia in bronze (with more attempts to zone than Oceania).
B2 was a powerful, burly problem, a mixture of coordination and pinches with a steep overhang that tended to spit competitors off the wall. Johanna was shut down by the starting coordination move and was unable to even secure a zone, coming off the wall looking exhausted but happy to be competing. Oceania nailed the starting move on her second attempt by taking advantage of her height and using a more static beta than Johanna had tried – securing a zone on further attempts but unable to top before timing out. Ayala tried a more dynamic, hand-match beta and got the starting move after several attempts, finally securing a zone in the last minute before timing out. Stasa used the same static beta as Oceania did, securing a zone on her flash attempt but – like all other competitors before her – was unable to top. Chaehyun flashed the problem in an incredible display of route-reading, body control, and pure strength, putting herself back in the running for a medal after being unable to top B1. Natalia nailed the first move by nearly campusing it, flashing the problem and moving into the gold medal position (as the only climber to have topped two boulders). Stasa and Chaehyun finished B2 in silver and bronze positions respectively.
B3 was a combination slab and coordination boulder, requiring climbers to proceed laterally along a slab, jump to secure the zone, then rock up on a heel to secure the finish.Johanna topped on her second attempt, while Oceania came heartbreakingly close to the zone but was unable to secure it before timing out. Ayala topped on her third attempt. Stasa flashed the zone and nearly fell off the wall trying to dyno to the finish move, ultimately reconsidering and successfully choosing static beta to secure the finish on her flash attempt. Chaehyun flashed the problem as well – throwing down a gauntlet for Natalia, who had to settle for finishing on her fifth attempt after difficulty jumping to the zone. After B3, medal positions remained the same as B2, with Natalia in gold, followed by Stasa and and Chaehyun in silver and bronze respectively.
B4 was another powerful problem with complexities including a facing-outward start and a pocket with a thumb catch to hold a 180-degree turn. Johanna was unable to secure a zone and had to settle for a no-top round and a guaranteed sixth-place finish – her highest since placing fifth at Tai’an in 2018. Oceania topped on her second attempt after securing a crucial heel hook on the last move, coming off the wall looking thrilled with her performance. Ayala secured the pocket thumb-catch move on her flash attempt and managed to flash the rest of the problem, also looking thrilled with her performance. Stasa ran onto the stage looking confident but struggled with the pocket thumb-catch, ultimately beta-breaking on her third attempt by using the pocket as a crimp before finishing the rest of the problem successfully – and guaranteeing herself at least a third-place finish. Chaehyun flashed the problem, nearly making it look easy. Natalia needed to top the problem (regardless of attempts) to secure gold, and made it happen, flashing the problem to secure the gold and winning her second World Cup of the season. Chaehyun came in second – her highest-ever Bouldering finish – and Stasa came in third.

The story of this season has been an uneven and inconsistent field: with climbers skipping World Cups to train for lead and/or for Olympic qualifying events, head-to-head competitions between the gold-medal climbers have been few and far between. That’ll (somewhat) change next week in Innsbruck. We’ll see three of the four 2023 gold medalists at one bouldering competition: Natalia will return, accompanied by teammate and Hachioji gold medalist Brooke Raboutou; both will be joined by Japanese climber and Seoul gold medalist Nonaka Miho. Other notable climbers registered are Luo Zhilu (CHN), Fanny Gibert (FRA), Hannah Meul (GER), Elnaz Rekabi (IRI), Laura Rogora (ITA), Mori Ai (JPN), Mia Krampl and Vita Lukan (both of Slovenia), Jenya Kazbekova (UKR), and Annie Sanders (USA). Prague gold medalist Oriane Bertone of France is currently not registered to climb.
Of note, Innsbruck’s World Cup will be a dual BouldeLead event, giving us the first opportunity to see some of the 2023 bouldering athletes' lead prowess (and a first glimpse at who the biggest lead powerhouses of the season will be). Registered climbers and names to watch on the Lead side include many of the above athletes, as well as Aleksandra Totkova (BUL), Eliska Adamovska (CZE), Julia Chanourdie (FRA), Molly Thompson-Smith (GBR), Tanii Natsuki (JPN), Janja Garnbret (SLO), and Kim Ja-in (KOR). I often like to think about the current modern, secular culture and compare it with the Catholic worldview.
One major contrast ( there are many) is a persistent reluctance to endure and horror of suffering of any kind.
It’s an understandable feeling because suffering can be horrific. But often times it isn’t and it’s just hard but also instructive and character building.
Certain patterns I’ve seen: the reluctance of couples to have kids ( and instead have dogs or cats as pets). Also the common tendency to abort special needs child’s and sort of a societal approval of that. Clumps of cells and skin tissue don’t have disabilities, only full human beings have those. Yet the drive to do so continues. You hardly see people or kids with Down’s syndrome anymore, and almost all the parents are devout Catholics or evangelicals.
It goes beyond sex or abstinence issues. I notice “ love” in friendships or even family relationships seems a little lacking or conditional. Often parents can “ love” their kids in so far as they “ bring home the bacon” in terms of grades, acheivment, personality, and perhaps romantic relationships. If they don’t do such, perhaps they are “ loved” a little less.
Many “friendships” seem surface level and based on what one can get. The fact that “ ghosting” even exists seems an unwillingness to suffer to.
Ghosting is basically ending a relationship by falling off the map and refusing to return calls, texts or offer any explanation. Explaining why you feel right in doing so might be uncomfortable but just dropping off is easier.
To suffer at some level just means to endure, and be willing to experience pain and sacrifice for your own or another’s good. So much of that is rooted in Christ’s love and an understanding of people being made in gods imag/ likeness.
It’s one of the reasons I think America needs a Catholic revival to address its many sins and many social ills.

tl;dr Reddit's shutting down third party apps at the expense of usability and in the name of profit, and is acting like the Bureau in the process. Should we join the sitewide blackout starting on June 12th, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely, to pressure reddit to rescind these changes so that third party apps may continue?
Hiya,
As you're probably aware, many subreddits will be shutting down on June 12th through the 14th in protest of recent API changes announced by Reddit. These will charge relatively high rates above a certain threshold, similar to Twitter, and would have the effect of killing major third party Reddit apps. Reddit is not obligated to run features at cost, of course. And if the API is a financial burden, then it seems appropriate to have larger users share the burden. But charging rates that would be likely be several times in excess of what the average user brings Reddit in ad revenue, while forbidding third party apps from running ads of their own, makes it clear that they do not want to share the financial load. They want to kill competition to their official app. People who use third party mobile apps trust their app of choice over the official one for better user experience, mod tools, or accessibility features, and the official one demands much more of your personal data. The official reddit app does not play nice with screen readers on iOS, so those who are visually impaired have to rely on third party reddit apps instead. Even if you don't use a third party app, there's a good chance that a poster or commenter you liked does. One of the third party apps, Apollo, even got a name drop and other shoutouts by Apple in their latest Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, To lose these apps would be a loss to the community.

Reddit's "PR" Campaign

In the process to rolling this out, Reddit has not enkindled much, if any, goodwill, I'd argue. They've gone to blame the developer of iOS third party app Apollo of "excessive" API overuse despite staying within currently sanctioned limits. They have accused the same app developer of "threatening" reddit:
Steve (Steve Huffman, i.e. spez, Reddit CEO) : "Apollo threatened us, said they’ll “make it easy” if Reddit gave them $10 million."
Steve: "This guy behind the scenes is coercing us. He's threatening us."
Even after Reddit admitted on a recorded phone call that said perception was a misunderstanding:
Christian Selig (i.e. iamthatis, Apollo app developer): "I said 'If you want Apollo to go quiet'. Like in terms of- I would say it's quite loud in terms of its API usage."
Reddit: "Oh. Go quiet as in that. Okay, got it. Got it. Sorry."
Reddit: "That's a complete misinterpretation on my end. I apologize. I apologize immediately."
And then accused the same developer of gaslighting the community... with no evidence presented:
Steve: His “joke” is the least of our issues. His behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.
Christian: Please feel free to give examples where I said something differently in public versus what I said to you. I give you full permission.
It would have honestly felt better if they were just announcing that they were killing third party app access outright. But instead, we've been presented with a pricing structure that looks like it was meant specifically to kill third party apps, them acting like that isn't, and accusing third party app devs of being incompetent instead of asking themselves why others would want to use apps that aren't theirs in the first place. spez's latest AMA yesterday is only more salt in the wound, offering only token concessions so that a few accessibility-focused third party apps can continue unharmed, while other third party apps have announced their shutdowns because of these changes:
Apollo (iOS app): Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️
Reddit is Fun (Android app): RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes
Sync for Reddit (Android app): Sync will shut down on June 30, 2023
Relay for Reddit (Android app): The pricing is prohibitively expensive and it cannot be ad supported. And, even if you paid a subscription fee of several dollars a month to continue to use Relay, you still wouldn't have access to any NSFW content in it. My opinion is that they want third party apps gone despite saying otherwise.

The Bigger Picture

And these changes are not being done in a vacuum. Reddit has made other changes to take features away from this site and what people have built on top of it. Namely:
Spez said in the latest AMA that old.reddit, the original desktop website for reddit, isn't going away. Then again, Spez also said years ago that "The API isn't going anywhere", and while it isn't going away, it is going towards places that will be worse for us all. That, combined with a list of broken promises, as compiled by the mods of /AskHistorians, makes Reddit's word as solid as Drop Bear Repellent is effective, in my eyes (though Reddit has been making improvements, in fairness).

Should we do something in response to this?

Now, that brings things to this sub.
/evnova is a very niche subreddit. While new reddit is happy to claim we are within the top 20% of subreddits in size, we are ultimately about a 20+ year old series of abandonware single player games. Modders and wiki editors like SharkyNebula and developers like Peter Cartwright with Cosmic Frontier: Override keep this series alive, but things are generally quiet for the most part.
Over 4,000 subreddits have announced some form of shutdown in protest of Reddit's API changes. Most people on this website probably don't know this subreddit even exists, but together with several default subs, I am open to joining as a means to show that we are willing to sacrifice our place here in the hopes that the collective pressure with other subs will compel reddit to revise or rescind these changes, so that major third party apps may continue to exist and that their users - members of all the communities around us - may continue to enjoy them. As a site dependent on user content and volunteer moderation, Reddit is nothing without its userbase, and with a show of protest and maybe some bad press, perhaps Reddit will change their mind. If it doesn't work, then, well, it'll beat doing nothing and having it happen anyways, and I guess that'll shows how much reddit values you, the user. And with comments from the CEO like:
We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive. Unlike some of the 3P apps, we are not profitable.
If this goes through unabated, what feature will reddit put on the chopping block next?
Now, with all this wall of text said, I have said many times that I am an absentee mod here. I do not believe that I have the authority to unilaterally shut down the subreddit. So I come here to ask you, the memberbase: Should we join the subreddit blackout, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely until Reddit backtracks on their changes and allows major 3rd party apps to continue?

We need to stop whining and complaining, and give politicians some answers
With regards to immigration, I understand we have a demography problem and the boomers are all retiring, so we need more young people in Canada. But pushing everyone to bankruptcy is not the answer.
I also understand that residential real estate is a huge part of our economy, and we cannot expect landlords to take the brunt of any solution. They're financing their lives away based on "current reality", and their taxes pay for everything in our communities.
Here are some important steps to solving our housing crisis IMO:
  1. Peg immigration levels to available housing at the Federal and Province levels now!
  2. Significantly increase taxes on Airbnb properties as they remove housing from Canadian Citizens and residents
  3. The Federal government should use its crown land to build new houses. Canadians pay for the house to be built (this keeping the building industry happy), and the government leases the land to the new home owner at a realistic rate. Naturally, good public transport to these new regions would be better for the earth and economy. Imagine giving folks who are first home buyers this chance to get a head start in life.
  4. Heavily tax people who are using houses and land banks, leaving homes sitting empty
  5. And most importantly - Limit the number of houses (not condos) that any individual or company can buy. We need to keep corporations with access to AI from buying all the available residential """""land"""""" up and destroying the middle class dream.
On point 5 - listen carefully Landlords. Corporations with access to AI have all the data, and they will destroy you and your "investments" in the not too distant future!

Hi all, I’m a super amateur cyclist! I’m starting to get more into cycling and am wondering if anyone has advise on what type of bike would fit me/my lifestyle best?
I’ve been cycling into work 3x times a week (~12km ride one way) trying to increase my fitness. I want to start cycling around more on weekends etc as I live in a nice area in Quebec that has plenty of bike paths - and lots of cycling groups should I ever get to a good enough fitness level to not fall behind.
I currently own 2 older bikes but feel like neither quite fit my needs?
Looking for a bike that can:
Should I look into getting a gravel bike? Touring bike? CX bike? Or should I just suck it up and keep riding the mountain bike?

If your agency is making between $10-30k per month, you’re sitting on an absolute goldmine and you have no idea.

What am I missing here? What would prevent an app from calling the API directly with the user's OAuth tokens?
In looking at the newly imposed API limits, the free-tier still allows up to 100 API calls/min, which seems it would equate to far more than the average 345 calls/day than are currently being used. This seems like an blatantly obvious solution that none of the app devs have pursued for some reason.

Many of you already know that our stated rate limit, per this documentation, was 60 queries per minute. As of July 1, 2023, we will enforce two different rate limits for the free access tier:

  • If you are not using OAuth for authentication: 10 queries per minute

Claims that Apollo is "inefficient" Another common claim by Reddit is that Apollo is inherently inefficient, using on average 345 requests per day per user, while some other apps use 100. I'd like to use some numbers to illustrate why I think this is very unfairly framing it. Up until a week ago, the stated Reddit API rate limits that apps were asked to operate within was 60 requests per minute per user. That works out to a total of 86,400 per day. Reddit stated that Apollo uses 345 requests per user per day on average, which is also in line with my findings. Thats 0.4% of the limit Reddit was previously imposing, which I would say is quite efficient.

2023.06.10 22:20 hamgouod Re-Sheathing 1940s home with modern materials.

Hello,
I have a house wood framed house that was built in the 40s that needs some work. The most important issue now is fixing wood siding issues and I figure the best thing to do here is to just go ahead and fully redo the exterior and try to insulate, seal, and add moisture resistance while I’m at it.
Currently the house has T111 over fiberboard and that’s about it. I would really like to pull all the fiberboard off to check the walls for rot, signs of pest activity, and to add insulation if needed.
Here’s the issue I can’t just google.
The house has obvious uneven settling that a structural engineer said to not worry about unless it progresses. What I don’t want to do is add to the problem if it does.
So, if I were to tear everything out and use ZIP sheathing or plywood/wrap etc. would I be inadvertently creating more potential issues by strengthening and locking down uneven framing?
I’m sure this house moves a little through through the season due to soils and age. I wouldn’t want to change any of the load bearing characteristics if it “wants” to move in a way it’s been doing for nearly 80 years.
Another issue that I would worry about is if (god forbid) I did have to get a foundation repair and in doing so adding rigidity in a settled state created more issues in an attempt to level back it it’s original position.
I just need a plan and would like to know what you guys would do.
