2023.05.28 19:01 Able_Possession8736 A Comprehensive Guide to Pro Football Video Game Covers

Another Madden $70 re-skin is upon us, so let's take a moment to explore the history of all the people who have been featured on the cover of an pro football video game.
While the selection of the Madden cover athlete is now an event, there was a wild wild west period of football games from the 80s to the mid-2000s where anybody with a computer could and would build football games, with the selection of the cover being all over the place. Roger Craig was the first cover athlete in 1985 on NFL Challenge for MS-DOS. Madden's first game was in 1988, then by the mid-90s getting a cover athlete or spokesman for your football game was pretty standard.
I wanted to compile those games and covers based on this Wiki article (and a few that it was missing from that list) and see who was on the main cover of all of those games (some games were almost completely irrelevant, so I left them off this list). Some of these may have more alternates with other people, but I'll stick with the main cover.

Covers by Position

*These are heavily boosted by John Madden being on 10 Madden covers
Obviously QBs dominate here, but I didn't realize how little defensive players have been on football game covers (9%), with none being on a cover since Richard Sherman in 2014. I'd love to see more defensive players on the Madden cover. Who would be the most likely defensive guy in the near future? Aaron Donald, TJ Watt, Nick Bosa, Myles Garrett, or Sauce Gardner?

Covers by Team

https://preview.redd.it/8f29df4ygl2b1.png?width=600&format=png&auto=webp&v=enabled&s=3b93f8a4ddb26b2cee1f6abd74652f44b7fbfdcb
If a team's player was not a lead on the cover or was not any identifiable player, I gave them a *
The Re-skins/Commanders?, Jags, Panthers, and Bills have appeared on a cover but never with an athlete as the lead or with a real person. Only the Texans have never appeared at all on the cover of any football video game. I'd say the Bills are most likely to get one next (Josh Allen), then the Jags (Trevor Lawrence), then the Panthers/Texans if either hits a home run with Young or Stroud. The Commanders have a long road ahead to getting a feature cover athlete, unless you ask Sam Howell who thinks he should be this year's Madden cover athlete.

Most Prolific Cover People

Kordell Stewart, Daunte Culpepper, and Donovan McNabb (and possibly Lamar Jackson, still too early for him) are the only players with multiple appearances that are either not or are unlikely to make the Hall of Fame. McNabb is the only guy to appear in multiple covers in the same year. Also of note, 7 athletes were on a cover without ever making a pro bowl in their careers: Brad Muster, Pat Terrell, Gordon Laro, Chris Zorich, Albert Fontenot, William Floyd, and Peyton Hillis (Hillis was the only one to be the primary cover athlete).
I'll list all the games and their respective covers by their era below. I'll also attach some of my favorite covers from each era. If the cover person was a Hall of Famer, I'll mark them with a \). If they're very likely to make the HoF but they're not yet eligible, I'll mark them with a +

2001: Backyard Football 2002 was a more kid-friendly version of a football video game, and they also had other games for other professional sports. I definitely played this a lot on my old Windows Me computer, and Pablo Sanchez is a god.
2002: NFL Fever was Microsoft's foray into football video games on the original Xbox. All 3 of their games featured Peyton Manning as the cover athlete.
2002: NFL GameDay 2003 was 989 Sports' exclusive for Sony on the PlayStation platform.
2004: ESPN NFL 2K5 was the last great football game before the NFL exclusively gave their license to the EA. It was this game that definitely led to NFL's decision though, as they slashed their release price to an unheard of $20, which forced Madden 2004 to release at $30 instead of the typical $50. This pissed off the NFL, who decided to have less competition instead.

The Madden Era: 2005-Present

2005: NFL Street 2 was the second in the NFL Street series as a kind of spiritual successor to NFL Blitz. EA tried to have some diversity in their football video games outside of the Madden franchise, so they had the short-lived Street franchise under \"EA BIG\"
2006: NFL Head Coach was a new perspective on NFL Games where you play as the coach instead of the players. I enjoyed these although they could get a little boring.
2007: All Pro Football 2K8 was 2K's attempt at keeping the 2K football franchise alive without the coveted NFL license. They got three HoF players on the cover in Elway, Barry, and Rice, but not the actual license to any NFL team. This game received praise for its mechanics, but poor sales showed that a non-NFL licensed game would always struggle to make it.
2011: Madden 12 was maybe the last good Madden game. Also, Peyton Hillis. The only guy on a NFL football game cover to never make a Pro Bowl. This guy is an actual hero though, so good for him.
2019: Doug Flutie's Maximum Football was a mix of american and CFL football as another attempt at making a football game without the NFL license to poor results. They have announced a new game as a free to play title on new platforms, but no games in this franchise have released since 2020.
2020: Retro Bowl is a mobile game more in the style of Tecmo Super Bowl than Madden. It's probably the most successful non-Madden game since ESPN NFL 2K5, and it's pretty fun. People should definitely give this one a try since it's free to play on any mobile platform.
2022: Madden 23 gave the cover back to Madden for the first time since 1999 to honor the passing of the legend John Madden. Unfortunately the game inside the cover was crap, has been the style of Madden games for over a decade.

Book 6: The City of Blue Fire

So the final buildup to the climax begins! We seem to be more solidly in the payoff section of the novel, with only a few revelations and theories this time around. Additionally, most of the cast we follow seem to be hitting their point of no return, we're on this roller-coaster and cant get off until it stops. That the dread didn't set in until it began clicking its way to the top is more your fault. The title is plenty evocative too, and if I had to guess, we'll be seeing more of the Darujhistan cast this time around.

Epigraph

Another issue of Rumor Born that seems to be recapping the events of the last few books in Darujhistan. What's interesting is it's final mention of the fête to end off.
For fun:
First came the Eel "or not one but a thousand" Is that literal, or merely a reference to their reach? I'll speak more to the Eel during the chapter breakdown below. What's also interesting is that the poem mentions they came "under a jagged moon that might be dead" We see from this that Rumor Born or Fisher in general is not authoritative. The work is literally recounting what rumors there are on the street, and whether or not there's anyone left living in Moon's Spawn is one of those. What this seems to indicate is that the Eel's influence couldn't be popularly felt until after Rake arrived.
"a claw scraped slow//on the city's cobbles" Kalam mistaken for a Claw (easy mistake) Rake is the "dragon... seen sailing high silver and black in the night sky" descending onto Pearl, who gave out the "demon's death cry"
The Tiste Andii were responsible for when "a master's hundred hands lost//a hundred daggers to the dark"
Which are all things that have happened in the past, the fête, ominously, has yet to occur, yet its mere invitation is counted among these City shaking events.

Chapter 17

Book 6's introduction. Overall, there isn't yet much to differentiate this from Book 5 other than setting, but we'll see how that develops. So without further ado...

Epigraph

[Edit: Uhh, this whole section I definitely never forgot]
Another excerpt from Silverfox, one describing a vision of the innards of Dragnipur and its relationship to Anomander Rake. Fairly straightforward, with two primary questions.
1) Why is this an excerpt of Silverfox? I assume our Adept-lett is running some reconnaissance on Rake? Feeling the effects of the slaying of the Hounds? I suppose I'll have to wait on that one.
2) Who is Outrider Hurlochel? Is he Malazan, or Tiste Andii? Or just Genebakin? That he's in the 6th implies Malazan, but the 6th never fought Caladan Brood to my recollection, he primarily fought the 5th. Additionally, when would a Malazan outrider get the opportunity to hear a conversation between Kallor and Brood? If he's Tiste Andii, then that means eventually Moon's Spawn will become aware of Silverfox, which has some fairly large implications. Beyond that, it makes sense that someone in Brood's, uhh... brood, would get access to the Rhivi. I guess it'd be Brood's 6th then? Something doesn't mesh, but I'll RAFO that for now.

The Chapter Itself -

- begins following Rallick Nom into the Phoenix Inn. Before entering, he is stopped by Meese who, after flirting with RN, for a moment, warns the assassin of someone asking after him. Someone who knew to sit at Kruppe's table, no less. He enters and notes, amused, for the first time how crowds part before him. He sits down, and the man (whom we are later told is Circle Breaker) warns him, on behalf of the Eel, of a contract sealed by Councilman Turban Orr with the Assassins' Guild against Lord Coll. The Assassin, Ocelot, merely waits for the Lord to return to the city. The Eel also applauds RN and Murillio's attempts to avenge Coll, and offers any assistance they would require. Rallick turns him down, and thanks him for the warning, after a quick drink with Iralta and Meese, he leaves the Inn to act on the information.
So, I had considered bringing this up before, but was on shakier ground then specualtion-wise. But now, its Speculation Time. Kruppe is the Eel, in my mind. We find out latter that Meese and Iralta are also in on the whole thing, so that's already ties to the Phoenix Inn. Kruppe obviously has no fear that the Eel would contradict him when lying to Baruk, and is able to mimic the Eel's method of cryptic hints perfectly. It fits his style of appearing far less than he is, in this case, he's a masquerading as a political lackey. Both the Eel and Kruppe were able to find out about the scheme against Coll without any slip-ups on the part of our conspirators. I believe this to be because of the poisoned bolt. Turban Orr was investigating it, and only someone who knew Rallick's MO could trace that back to him, and only someone who knew Rallick personally could understand that the bolt was initially meant for Lady Simtal rather than Councilman Lim. After all, the death of Orr's majority is too convenient to assume anything besides a political motive. The Eel heard wind of investigations regarding a poisoned bolt, and understood that his friend was behind it and why.* There were other things that had tipped me off, but those were the big ones that I can remember at present.
*Additionally, given that both Baruk and Crone felt Oppon's interference, and the uncharachteristic nature of the plan, it is highly probable that Kruppe felt the interference as well and later recognized what that interference was, hence his coy hint last chapter.
Baruk, meanwhile, is sulking alongside Anomander Rake, wondering why the Tiste Andii would ever allow the Imass and the Adjunct into the barrow. The tension between the two grows, as their diametrically opposed views on the world continue to breakdown communication and raise conflict between the two. In conflict, the Lord of Moon's Spawn excels. He explains to the High Alchemist that Laseen will have her fight, and capture Darujhistan whole if at all possible. Eliminating the Jaghut Tyrant and Rake are merely two additional tasks to maintain the long-term sustainability of the Empire. Rake hasn't nuked the city and left, because he wants to beat Laseen directly, a total victory where she losses what she desires without the world losing it as well. Baruk notes that Anomander Rake could always betray Darujhistan, but Rake notes that becoming himself a traitor would legitimize any treason against him. He even notes several individual who could defeat him under certain circumstances.
Baruk uses Rake's "Son of Darkness" moniker, and Rake rejects it as a title used by those who would worship him. Interesting. Being the child of a god would net you that, I suppose. He maintains the honest (if brutal) route in life not out of fear but duty. Duty to the ever-dwindling population of Tiste Andii, who merely run down the clocks of their lives dispassionately, obeying orders yes, but merely as a function of enduring their existence. He could run and hide, saving his people's lives, but they would be living in body only, so he follows cause after cause, attempting to revive their spirits. (Also of note, he mentioned that the Tiste Andi live roughly 20 thousand years, so I'm not sure where I'd gotten my deep time understanding of them, unless Rake's lifespan is extended the same relative amount as a human mage's would be)
Baruk is unsure how to respond, the plight of the Tiste is so incomprehensible that he can only muster the most abstract pity. So he returns the conversation to the Jaghut Tyrant. Will Rake be able to defeat it? Who knows, but killing him would render the Tyrant greatly reduced, possibly even to a level where the Cabal can eliminate him. Alternatively, killing the Tyrant would reduce AR, so that the Malazans may someday eliminate him. Two birds, one and a half stones. It is the Cabal that scares the Empress, an unknown, which is why our malazans seek out Vorcan. Beyond this, Oppon's meddling continually draws attention from the gods of the world, interested to see if immoral blood would be spilled. This began with Rake's killing of the two Hounds.
They finish the conversation by assessing the condition of Mammot, trapped in a slumber, his mind/soul stuck in his D'riss warren, rulled by the Worm of Autumn, D'rek, of whom Mammot is a High Preist. D'riss is evidently the Warren of earth magic, so I wonder if Caladan Brood will have or has had any interactions with the scholar. Mammot went off to investigate the barrow at Baruk's request, and wound up in this state. All of the Elder magic and Otataral present have messed with him somehow, and he cannot be freed until the Jaghut is. In which case, there will be a narrow window to save him before the High Preist, and his goddess, are subsumed by the Tyrant.
Crokus and Apsalar return to Darujhistan, despite wanting to be rid of the woman as soon as possible, Crokus is disappointed when the City does not impress her. They enter Mammot's study, finding a mess rather than the man himself. When wondering whether Rallick would know anything of this, Apsalar reacts strongly, likely prompted by her time under the Rope. For the first time since Book 2, we enter the PoV of Circle Breaker. After receiving a sign from an old woman, he delivers an additional sign to Meese. Internally, however, he cannot help but assume his days are numbered. He's acting in public, and how long until Turban Orr adds together that the same guard present at all of his leaked meetings is himself a mole? He expects to die soon, but is resolved to maintain his course until the last, heading for one final contact he considers redundant. Meese acts on the signal, approaching the building Mammot stays in, and knocking on the door. Crokus answers, disappointed that she is not his Uncle, and confused as to why she would be there. Crokus catches her up with Aps' amnesia, and notes they have not spoken to anyone but one stabler. Meese informs them of the death of the guard at the D'Arle estate, and Crokus takes this to be a betrayal on Chalice's part. That's... not a betrayal buddy. Aps' mention of Chalice clues Meese in on the situation surrounding the death, and despite the boy's protestations, she takes the situation at face value.
As they prepare to leave, Serrat stalks them, resolving to kill another watcher in the shadows, (I assume Irilta, given that she's backup) and replace her. She's been hunting the Coin Bearer on Rake's orders and we learn that she was one of the individuals hunting Crokus along the rooftops in Ch. 5. There's not much more to this scene, other than a couple odd details I'll note.
Kruppe and Murillio reach the Phoenix Inn, not finding their friends. Kruppe strangely waves aside the news of Rallick Nom meeting someone here earlier, and instead of reporting to Baruk right away, instead opts to enjoy a tankard of beer. This, coincidently opens a window for Circle Breaker to approach him with a message.
Rallick Nom, meanwhile, prepares to take on Ocelot. The clan leader will have all the advantages, and RN will have one shot at best, assuming he can even find him and get close enough. He does, however, posses an anti-magic powder (supplied by Baruk) which could potentially even the battle field. Moments after recalling the warning from the High Alchemist against applying it to bare skin, Rallick, knowing his chances are slim, fearing that Coll's death would remove the last claim on humanity he has left, he rubs the dust into his bare skin, all over. What sort of changes will this effect onto our assassin? Who knows! The chapter ends with RN swearing he will find and kill Ocelot undetected.
And there we go! Book 6 is starting off with a banger, once again tying ever more threads together tighter and tighter, promising one heck of a payoff. I, for one, cannot wait to see how it all unfolds!

2023.05.27 11:21 silenuus [M4A] [Fate RP] "I ask of you, are you my master?"

((This post is open! Also, canon knowledge not required – if this interests you, please reach out!))
A magus cannot rest, even beneath the hammering rain.
The barrage against his umbrella only distracted him for a moment from the bitter cold that misted his breath. Around him, the ordinary, decent people of the world took shelter, seeking the warmth of cafes and restaurants until the worst of the deluge passed. Those unlucky enough to be caught outside huddled beneath umbrellas, newspapers, or a hood. But even in the circle of warmth, fear reigned. People looked up from their phones nervously, scanning the streets, and then back down. They hugged their coats tight; parents gripped their children’s hands. Something besides rain weighed on the city: the wave of “incidents” that had claimed multiple lives and left the police helpless. The duty of resolving these incidents lay on the master's clan. The Ritual required the blood of heroes, not of innocents, and he would not allow such to be spilled on his watch.
“Master, this way,” his Servant murmured. She walked a little ahead of him, hidden beneath a heavy yellow raincoat. It hid her foreign looks from passersby, but he could imagine her face on the other side: stern, cold, determined, a stoic look that hid real anger at injustice. He gave a soft murmur of approval before following her away from the main thoroughfares, toward the docks and warehouses that dominated the bay.
The dock district was the epicenter of the “incidents” – no surprise. Dark, oppressive, cramped, they promised a welcoming warren for vermin to hide in as well as an excellent hunting ground. Drunk sailors and longshoremen made easy prey, to say nothing of the odd out of towner who got lost around here. They all had been devoured for mana, and he meant to find out who had overstepped the laws of the Clocktower.
Thus, they walked onto the predator’s turf. The logic was simple: the simplest way to deal with an ambush is to spring it. A stalking predator only emerges from the underbrush when it thinks it has the upper hand. The question then, is whether they had prepared enough to compensate for the home-field advantage. Crossing into the nest, though, the young Master wondered whether any plan would be enough. It was almost pitch black beneath the thick rainclouds; shining signs and windows cast thin lines of light along the alleyways and roads, glinting against the water choking storm drains. There could be anything hiding in these blind alleys and derelict buildings. However, even prepared, he felt a tingle travel up his spine. The oppressive air felt suffocating.
A moment later he walked right into his servant’s back. She’d drawn up short, dropping into a martial posture.
“Close?” he murmured.
“Very.”
The scent of the enemy led them to a dark back alley. The pile of garbage in a rusted dumpster decomposed beneath a rat king's tangle of wires above, a snarled mess that – in theory – powered this building as well as several other buildings stealing power and internet. The Master stole a glimpse over his shoulder at the road outside. Empty. Silent save the rain. When he glanced back, his servant's red-hot sword sliced through a padlock. As the chain splashed to the ground, she pushed the warehouse's backdoor open, edging forward. He followed, crest pulsing with mana. They were close: the thick air tasted putrid. As they entered the offices in the back of the warehouse, the smell hit him: sickly sweet, nauseating. The predator was nearby. They had reached its den.
As they walked through the rear offices, the miasma only grew thicker. Not a single light was on: his Servant could see, but he could only make out shapes in the dark, broken up by the occasional beam of light from a neon sign shining through the hallways. His servant took the lead, her sword bared. The long linoleum floor stretched out forever between rows of mold-gnawed cubicles, and sweat beaded on his brow. Every footstep sounded like a thunderclap in the crushing silence. As the offices ended, they faced another door – this one leading out onto the floor. Here, the fog of disease grew thickest. His servant shared a momentary glance with him before she eased it open.
The creak of the unoiled hinge was like a scream. His blood ran cold.
He had heard that a certain magus had arrived in the city to participate in the Ritual of Heroic Blood. They called him the Mycoidist: his research had given him mastery of a parasitic fungus that would seize control of its victim, leaving them an empty husk he alone controlled. Now he saw that grizzly work firsthand: cordyceps, infested victims glistening with sporelike structures. Nothing human remained of them: they ambled around the room, obeying their master like machines. It was, perversely, the ideal magic for the Ritual: they had no need of their souls, so the Servant could feed on them with impunity. The young magus murmured a few words to increase the weight of the invisible spores around him, sending them to the ground. His servant had her own defenses –
Not that she would tolerate such injustice for long.
She sprung forward, blade flashing through the air. The cordyceps rushed forward to meet her, giving a gutteral, abhuman howl that echoed in the rafters. The master raised his hand, crest shining a brilliant blue-green in the low light. In answer to his incantation, several metal pipes ripped themselves out of the wall. It felt like a crude use for his research, but gravity had many applications. For example: turning rebar into javelins flying at eighty miles an hour. The fungal horrors were hard to kill permanently, but he could pin them down. Each spike staked another to the walls as his servant’s flaming sword cut through them. They had almost cleared the room when –
“MASTER!” she called. He barely had time to react before his servant shoved him aside. He hit the ground with a soft grunt. A split second later, the enemy Servant's blade split the air where he’d stood. A clash of steel, a burst of sparks, and his partner deflected the strike. The enemy servant ducked back into the rafters. “Stay close, master. I cannot guarantee your–”
He couldn’t sense an Assassin’s aura – no mortal could. But he didn’t need to, not one he had spotted the softer target. The magus charged forward, magic lightning his steps, as he sensed the fungal heretic in the darkness. “Keep him off my back! I’ll hunt his master.”
His servant had no time to answer before Assassin erupted from the shadow, venomous dagger flashing through the air. As the servants fought a hypersonic duel behind him, he followed the faint presence of the heretic through the open cargo bay doors, back into the pouring rain. They emerged onto the shorefront. Dozens of infected longshoremen wandered there, the spores even growing on a stacked labyrinth of crates. The heretic leapt away.
“Well, well. You seek the hunter in his den!” His raspy voice betrayed decades of self-serving evil. “I can’t begrudge you the fight, but… how does the old saying go… discretion is the better part of valor?”
The cordyceps froze, only to turn on the young master in unison. Must be two dozen, at least. This horror explained the disappearances at least – each one was a human being, a living person that the master had failed to protect.
His teeth ground. “You’re a madman who’s betrayed every principle of the Clocktower, to say nothing of your humanity. Spare me your advice."
“Such righteousness…! Your family’s legacy is famous but… I’m afraid… it ends here, with you. You and your crest will be put to work in my service, oh magus of gravity, but… oh, what is this?”
All around the young master, that spectral blue-green light shined like a vicious halo. He seized any projectile he could: the metal of a torn-out downspout from a nearby building, pipes ripped out of the ground and walls, the metal prods from a forklift. At its full potential, his sorcery could control dozens of objects.
“This land is the grave of countless mages,” the young master hissed. “Time to join them.”
The steel hail fell.
I hope you enjoyed this (rather long) introduction – and to be clear, it’s more a tone piece than a starter. (Though, if you wish to build on those characters/that situation, I don’t mind!)
The classic Fate/stay night games and shows have always been favorites of mine. It’s simply one of the greatest weeb high concepts ever: seven modern mages summon seven heroes of myth to fight to the death for the wish-granting power of the Holy Grail. Only one pair can survive and claim the prize – but often at a terrible cost to themselves, their values, and those they love. To secure the loyalty of their servants, each master possesses three command seals: spells they can use to issue absolute commands – even impossible ones. What ensues is a brutal war to the death, as they stalk each other through the urban jungle. Alliances shift, ideals clash, characters are tested – It’s the kind of idea that makes you jealous you didn’t come up with it! It also practically begs for you to add to it: the system invites making up new Servants, Masters, and settings.
So with the announcement of a new Fate game soon, as well as more Fate coming in fall, I thought I’d return to RPing for it. In particular, I want to go back to basics: I want to come up with a pair of characters, Master and Servant, and put them through hell as they try to win the war and fulfill their wishes. This would harken back to the tone of the original, so I’ll say up front to expect this RP to have some fairly dark content: horror, sex, violence, gore, civilian death, all that good stuff. I’m a proud authorial sadist: I like to put my characters through hell to find out who they really are. However, I want to juxtapose that heaviness with moments of fun and joy. A romance would be great – Shirou and Arturia’s starcrossed love has lived rent-free in my head for over a decade. I'm fine with writing a Servant or a Master.
(An edit: I wrote this prompt expecting these characters to be OCs, but I'm not opposed to using canon characters. That said, I don't care for doubling.)
All that said, I’m not married to the canonical setting. For sure I have a great fondness for the Nasuverse, make no mistake, but its quirks, opacity, and strict rules can make it inconvenient to write in. (After all, look at the spinoffs – they didn’t try to stick to canon much, either!) So, I’m totally fine with just taking the concept of a Grail War and plopping it down somewhere else, or in our own setting. We could replace the magic system, change the rules of the battle, or even move it to a completely different environment. What about a grail war in Victorian London? Or 1912 Vienna? Or a cyberpunk hive city, drowning in neon? This also means that if you’re not familiar with Fate/stay night and still somehow made it this far in the post, feel free to reach out if you find the idea interesting.
A few words about writing style. The sample above is much longer than my typical post. Most of them will be two to five paragraphs long, depending on the situation and context. I don’t believe in strict minimums for posts: I’ve seen two thousand word posts that say almost nothing and twenty word posts that knocked me flat. As for literacy, well, I’ve never been quite sure what “advanced literate” means, but that sample should be representative. I strive to post at least once a day, and I’ll often be available for rapid-fire posting. However, real life is prone to fits of busyness, so I hope you will be understanding about my availability – I will be of yours. Either way, I will make it a point to maintain steady OOC communication if something is going to interrupt our fun.
One last note: I have nothing against it, but I’m not familiar with Grand Order or its offshoots. If a character or concept from Grand Order inspires you, by all means pitch me on 'em, but be ready to adapt them to the tone and setting I’ve described.
To summarize:
  • I want a classic Grail War scenario: masters, servants, and a battle royale for the Holy Grail.
  • I don’t need our RP to take place in any official setting. We can use some alternate world, an original world, or any mix thereof.
  • I'm fine with OCs, canon characters, and any combination thereof, but I don't care for doubling.
  • I expect a fairly dark, serious tone broken up by lighter moments.
  • Be prepared for NSFW and horror content.
  • A strong masteservant relationship. If it’s a romance, I prefer to write the M in M/F relationships.
A little about me:
  • 32(ohgod)m, enthusiastic if aging weeb on the West Coast.
  • Veteran of both freeform and system-based RP, starting in the heady days of livejournal nearly, oh, fifteen years ago?
  • You can gauge my literacy level from the sample above.
  • My posting length varies with the needs of the scene. I don’t pad out short posts or cram down long ones. I’ve written from two hundred words to two thousand.
  • My schedule varies a bit. I pursue an advanced degree full time, so I tend to lurch between high and low availability. If I’ll be unable to reply for more than a day, I will communicate that. Other times, I’m free for rapidfire posting.
  • Friendly OOC. For me, half the fun of RP is meeting people from all different walks of life.
What I need from you:
  • To be 21 or older
  • To be enthusiastic and communicative
  • To add your own ideas to the plot
If you’re interested, shoot me a PM, not a chat. Include:
  • Your age, pronouns, time zone, and anything else you’d like me to know about you.
  • What you want out of this RP
  • An idea for a setting concept or character
  • An example of your writing

2023.05.27 11:16 silenuus [M4A] [Fate RP] "I ask of you, are you my master?"

2023.05.26 18:04 SalmaanQ Endgame Part 2 - Understanding Why and How

Continued from Part 1

Motive (as revised from this post)

Because I concluded early on that Adnan was involved in Hae’s murder, I did not dwell too much on motive until more recently. I understand the importance of motive for those having difficulty making that leap across the side-walk crack to accept Adnan being a killer. I totally get how Team Adnan's aggressive PR campaign expanded that crack into a chasm the size of the Snake River Canyon for those entrenched in their belief in Adnan’s innocence. Prepare to make the jump that Evel Kneivel could not.
There is a recurring theme among Hae and Adnan's circle of friends where Adnan would talk about how he and Hae were having sex all over the place. I mean, Adnan told everyone. Becky Walker said that Adnan would talk about sex with Hae after the break up, but Hae never corroborated, only implied (p. 28). Adnan boasted about his exploits to Peter Billingsly (p. 41). To Yasar Ali (p. 58). To Stephanie (p. 90). Even to the fucking tipster who called the cops on Feb. 12, 1999 (MPIA 459 824). The only person in Hae's circle who claims that Hae said that she and Adnan were having sex was Debbie Warren. The same Debbie who admitted to reaching out to Don via email after Hae disappeared. The same Debbie who admitted to spending 7 hours on the phone with Don (“Donny”) because she was “investigating” him as a murder suspect of her good friend. The same Debbie who, after learning Hae was murdered, took her investigation up a notch and went out alone with Donny during spring break. The same Debbie who probably would have broken into the police impound lot to drive off in the Sentra because she felt Hae would have wanted her to have that too. There is also an allegation in the investigating Detective’s notes wherein it states that Debbie was physically assaulted by Don. MPIA 1991. Funny how Debbie didn’t mention that in the HBO doc. Yeah, I’d say Debbie is among the least reliable people in this shitshow. And that’s saying a lot.
Adnan did not limit boasting of his sexual prowess to his classmates. He told one of Gutierrez's associates that he had sex with Hae up to 3 times a day, six days a week (A-0192). If Adnan and Hae were having that much sex, under a UV lamp her back seat, where none of Adnan’s genetic material was found, would have lit up like fucking Chernobyl. Also, having sex 18 times a week would have left Hae with no time to write in her diary. But she did and it paints a very different picture. There is no reference in the diary to Hae having sex with Adnan--actually it suggests the opposite. Her July 1, 1998 entry makes it pretty clear that there was not much going on physically between them and it appears that it was Adnan's inability to perform: Hae writes that Adnan told her, "You said that I can't fulfill you physically, well, you can't fulfill me emotionally." She went on to write that earlier that day, "Aisha said, 'Even if you don't have great [sic] sex life, at least you have a strong emotional relationship." Some may argue that Hae avoided including explicit details in her diary knowing that her kid brother had a history of reading it. Ok, but Hae writing about her unfulfilled sexual needs does not exactly look like her brother is her target audience.
As to my reference to Hae's Diary, if you feel a sense of righteous indignation percolating over a crass violation of her privacy, unplug the coffee machine--especially if you watched the HBO documentary. Were you equally offended by the liberal use of Hae's diary embellished with animations and a Hae voiceover? We need not even get into how the diary was cynically exploited to knowingly push a false narrative. Moving on...
Adnan was clearly insecure about his ability to perform, which is likely why he overcorrected by telling anyone who wasn’t wondering that he was a fuck-machine. The letter that, according to Ja’uan, Adnan had Asia transcribe even included the idiotic “playa playa!” reference. He couldn’t even stop from giving himself a sexual affirmation in his fabricated alibi. It continued through the Serial Podcast 15 years later with Rabia laying it on too thick with the “playa playa” bullshit. Add to that the ridiculous amount of love and attention that Hae threw at Adnan that helped prop up his fragile ego. If you have not done so and want to see what all-consuming, inexplicably excessive love and devotion looks like, check out Hae's diary. When Hae was into a guy, she was all in. I can see an insecure guy like Adnan feeding off that firehose of positive vibes. Needing those positive vibes. Hae’s crazy love was the fan that propped up the car dealership balloon man that was Adnan’s sexual identity. It fed the macho swagger image that he wanted to project.
Then in late December 1998, Hae "fuck fished" Adnan (you need to click the link to get my reference and I promise that you will not regret it). Many of Adnan’s supporters point to the fact that Adnan and Hae had broken up before, but in any of the previous breakups did she fuck fish him and focus her affections on another? No. After being the willing target of a love bombing campaign rivaling Dresden during WW2, Adnan's balloon man went limp upon Hae abruptly shutting off the fan. She redirected her bombing campaign to the Pacific theater and went Hiroshima on Don. For the record, that's keeping consistent with the WW2 analogy, not a crack on Hae's ethnicity conflating all Asians. Shit. Having said that, you must indulge me with a natural segue about conflating Asians that is relevant to this case.
While pretending to be desolated upon the news of Hae's body being discovered, Adnan started saying some pretty weird shit. While talking to his friend, Imran Hasnuddin, Adnan declared that he did not believe the dead body was Hae because “all Asians look alike.” Unlike most of us, Adnan's grief apparently has 6 stages. Between denial and anger, he demonstrates bizarre racism. Now it would be strange if this was reported by just Imran. The police record has at least five other witnesses reporting Adnan making similar statements. He said it to his gal pal Stephanie: “All Asian girls look alike. Don’t think it was her, it could be anyone.” He said it to Mr. Kramer, the Health teacher: “All Asian’s look alike. They have the wrong person.” He said it to the school nurse, Sharon Walts, to whom he took it up a notch: “It’s not her. All Asians look alike. All blacks look alike. They have it all wrong.” "Blacks" too, eh? That explains a lot. Adnan probably took false comfort in believing that Al Cowlings was driving him around on January 13 instead of Jay. The examples continue with Adnan's friend, Ja'uan: "All Asian girls look alike." And finally, he said it to his friend who accompanied him to the AT&T store, Peter Billingsly, but this time with a twist: "All Chinese look alike." Yeah, Hae was Korean, but taking exception with that error is like finding fault with someone for eating asparagus before they piss in your face. Anyway, back to Hae transferring her affections from Adnan to Don.
What was worse, Hae was telling everyone in the world--probably including Adnan--how crazy she was about Don and how he was the most wonderful guy in the history of male organisms and female orgasms. That would fuck someone like Adnan up. Having your ex dump you for someone else is one thing. "Fuck fishing" an insecure guy with issues of sexual inadequacy is igniting a powder keg. That alone could have pushed a guy like Adnan over the edge. But add to that the possibility that Adnan confided to Hae what Bilal did to him (possibly the subject of her May 7, 1998 diary entry referring to Adnan telling her a sexual secret about himself). Adnan's head: "What if she tells people of my inability to perform and why?" Bilal had his own thought bubble, "What if she tells people what I did to Adnan?" Hae Min Lee did not have a chance.

Bilal’s Plot - What Was SUPPOSED to Happen

Many of you will blow your collective tops at this next section. There are also those who reflexively shout “FAN FICTION” any time they encounter a perspective that challenges their world view. But even the fair-minded will be tempted to characterize what follows as fan fiction. It is not. I sincerely ask for your forbearance as you read this. It is the least citation-heavy part of this post. That is because it represents the conclusions that will be explained in the subsequent sections. The conclusions are not based on any single piece of evidence regarded in a vacuum. It is the totality of the evidence based on the actions of Adnan and Bilal, Bilal’s pattern of behavior, Jennifer Pusateri's recorded statement and the obvious and egregious falsification of evidence by the police and prosecutors--the combination of the prisms mentioned earlier. The amalgam of these factors will be discussed in detail and will give evidentiary weight to support the following narrative.
Bilal’s plot had two phases. In phase 1, Hae would be murdered as soon as possible after school with alibis being established immediately thereafter. The closer that first alibi witness could be confirmed after the murder, the less likely anyone would think that Adnan was involved. The remainder of the day would be dedicated to establishing supplemental alibis of Adnan being seen by others and doing things, like going to track practice or leading prayers of the boys group at the mosque—things that a person who just murdered someone would not do. In phase 2, having established Adnan’s alibis the previous day, focus would be turned to permanently disposing of Hae’s car and body before she was reported missing to the police.
Bilal’s plot required Adnan to have someone outside the circle of trust serve two important roles. First, the plot required a key alibi witness who could account for being with Adnan during most of time after which Hae was last seen alive. Second, it required a chauffeur to ferry Adnan to and from places where Adnan could establish supplemental alibis to bolster his innocence. Bilal’s MO is using people who are not too close. People like Jay or Asia. That is to circumvent any suspicion that the person is close enough to have a motivation to lie. For the primary alibi witness, however, Adnan also needed someone over whom he could exercise a degree of control. Someone he could compel to go along and do his bidding without asking too many questions. Jay was the perfect candidate.
Adnan preyed upon Jay’s very real fear of the police and the fact that they would violate Jay’s rights without provocation. Adnan likely threatened to turn in Jay for selling drugs if he did not do as Adnan asked on January 13, 1999. It is important to remember that sixteen years after Jay was enlisted to be Adnan’s chauffeur, Baltimore PD beat Freddie Gray to death for the crime of walking in his neighborhood. Yeah, Freddie ran when he saw the cops–probably because he was afraid that they would do what they did to him. Now give the cops the slightest cause like informing them that Jay sells drugs. It’s fair to say that Jay would be compelled to play along under such a threat.
Again, and I cannot overemphasize this, Jay was only supposed to be an alibi witness in Bilal’s elaborate plot. He was not supposed to know of the plan to murder Hae. He was not supposed to know that Adnan was anywhere near Hae’s car. He was definitely not supposed to see Hae’s dead body. Jay was to have no information that would connect Adnan to Hae’s murder. Bilal’s plan would not allow for it. All he was supposed to know was that if he failed to play ball on January 13, 1999, Adnan would drop a dime and Jay’s life would be over.
Adnan was admonished by Bilal that under no circumstances was he to use his new phone to call Bilal on the days surrounding January 13, 1999. If something went wrong with the plot and the cops started sniffing around Adnan, Bial didn’t want to be implicated or questioned. They likely went over last minute details in person during the night of January 12 when Adnan’s phone was pinging the tower by Bilal’s dental school. Adnan was supposed to call Hae that night to confirm that she would give him a ride after school.
During the morning of January 13, 1999, under the ruse of helping Jay buy a birthday gift for his girlfriend, Stephanie, Adnan left his car and recently activated phone with Jay. After school, Adnan got a ride from Hae by telling her some bullshit about his car being repaired. He likely asked her to drive him to a remote place where he said his car would be dropped off. At that remote location, Hae was murdered. It was NOT at the Best Buy parking lot. I know. Just bear with me for a bit. The explanations for why things unfolded will be explained in due course.
Hae’s car and body were left at the Interstate 70 Park N Ride at Security Blvd. Whether the murder took place there is neither known nor is it relevant. Adnan got a ride from an unknown third accomplice from the Park N Ride to the Best Buy at 1701 Belmont Ave. Under Bilal’s plan they could not risk Jay picking up Adnan from the Park N Ride where Jay might see Hae’s car. This was part of Bilal thinking ahead because once Hae was reported missing, there would be descriptions of her vehicle on the news. If Jay saw Adnan with Hae’s car, he could make an anonymous call. Jay was not supposed to see Hae’s car that day.
Upon arriving at the Best Buy, Adnan called his cell to have Jay pick him up. Jay arrived at the Best Buy giving Adnan his earliest Alibi for Jan. 13. Per Bilal’s instructions, Adnan would go to work at establishing supplemental alibis. First, Bilal thought it was necessary to bolster Jay’s status as a reliable alibi witness. I hope that no one will fault me for assuming that among Bilal’s least offenses was that he’s a racist. Bilal likely thought that the same reasons Jay was pliable—a black kid who sold weed—made him a weak alibi witness. Thus, Adnan needed to have someone back up the claim that he was with Jay at least as early as 3:30 PM. This was also the most important time point given how close it was to the murder. Adnan’s alibi that he was with Jay at about 3:30 PM had to be unimpeachable. Thus, when Jay arrived at the Best Buy, Adnan would immediately reclaim his phone and call Nisha. This is critical. After saying hi to Nisha, Adnan would hand the phone over to Jay and have him say hi to her too. Nisha never met Jay nor did she have any idea who he was. Trial Tr. 1/28/2000 at 189:25-190:17. This wasn’t Adnan playfully tossing his phone to Jay. It was deliberate. Per Bilal’s instruction, Adnan had to do this to give himself a corroborating alibi witness who could confirm that Adnan was with Jay at 3:32 PM. That was the purpose of the Nisha call.
Per Bilal’s plan, Adnan would then be dropped off at track practice (even though he was exempt because of Ramadan) to give himself more alibi witnesses. After track, Adnan would be picked up by Jay and taken to the apartment of people Jay knows who would make for additional alibi witnesses. People like Kristi Vinson, who was pursuing her graduate degree in social work at UMBC. From Kristi’s place, Adnan was supposed to drop Jay off at Gilston Park where he would meet Jen at around 6:30 PM. Trial Tr. 2/15/2000 at 187:18-25. Jay and Jen would often go to this park together to walk her dog. Jen would serve as another potential alibi witness. Adnan was to then head home to prepare to go to the mosque for taraweeh prayers. Bilal arranged to have Adnan lead prayers among the youth group of 20 boys and to also give a short talk that would be seen by the hundreds of congregants/alibi witnesses at the Islamic Society of Baltimore. End of phase 1.
Phase 2 was likely supposed to kick off early in the morning the next day. Because Bilal was operating under the fallacy that Hae’s family would have to wait 24 hours before reporting her missing, he thought his conspirators had at least until the afternoon of January 14, 1999 to properly dispose of Hae’s car and body. Dispose of them in a way that they would never be found.
That is actually not a bad plan. If it was executed as Bilal had intended, Hae’s murder would likely have remained a mystery. If Jay had been kept in the dark as intended by Bilal, Jay would have nothing to tell the police except that he picked up Adnan soon after school let out. If Jay remained an alibi witness for Adnan, the timing of Hae’s murder would not have been pinpointed to the critical window from when she left school at 2:15 PM and when she failed to pick up her cousins about an hour later. No one would have questioned Adnan’s whereabouts on January 13th on a minute-by-minute basis. Even if they did, Bilal’s plan had Adnan well insulated for almost the entire time after school doing things that one would not expect a 17-year-old to do if he had just committed murder. Had things gone according to plan, we would not be talking about this case today. Bilal’s plan gave Adnan more than enough cover to get away with murder. Of course, things did not play out according to Bilal’s carefully orchestrated plot.

What DID Happen - Jay's Status as Alibi Compromised

This part was the most difficult to piece together because of the multiple versions provided by Jay. There was his February 28 interview. His March 15th interview. His trial testimony. His interview 15 years later with The Intercept. Then there are other factors that give context to Jay’s statements like Jen and Kristi’s police interviews, the police progress reports, Adnan’s cell phone records, the distance between the locations where Jay and Adnan traveled, the pressure the police were applying to Jay, etc. to which deductive reasoning is applied and conclusions can be drawn.
The night of January 12, 1999, Adnan called Hae three times. No response during the first two calls. She picked up the third. She was in the midst of talking to Don (while writing Don’s name 127 times in her diary at pg. 66 of the pdf). She wanted to get back to Don on the other line with whom she was on the phone until 3 AM and likely asked Adnan if she could call him back. Adnan was thrown off by this and stumbled while trying to give Hae his cell number. Because he still didn’t have it memorized, he started giving her a number starting with a 410 area code--like his home number--out of habit. He caught himself and gave her the correct number with the 443 area code to his cell phone but did not tell her it was his cell phone. This is reflected in how Hae noted Adnan’s new cell number in her diary (starting with the incorrect area code) without any indication that it was his cell phone. This was the first major deviation from Bilal’s plan. Adnan was not supposed to give Hae his cell number. Now it was in her diary. That seemingly inconsequential act would later bite Adnan in the ass and cause Bilal’s plot to fall apart. More recently, Adnan turned his unintended act of giving Hae his cell number to his advantage by making it sound as though he was calling Hae specifically for that purpose. Hae did not call Adnan back because, as her diary indicates and police record corroborates, she had someone else on her mind.
The uninitiated might ask at this point, “well if Adnan wasn’t supposed to give out his number, why did he let other people in his circle of friends have it?” I’ll do that annoying thing of answering a question with a question: Of the people to whom Adnan gave his cell number, how many ended up dead on January 13, 1999? I said that Hae was not supposed to have Adnan’s cell number.
January 13, 1999 likely unfolded more or less according to Bilal’s plan described in the previous section. Except the cops did not adhere to the 24-hour missing person fallacy. Not all police departments follow that police and even those that do make exceptions. This was a reliable young woman who always picked up her cousins from school between 3-3:15 PM. When Hae failed to show up, her family called the cops who responded at 5:12 PM. This prompted Hae’s brother to get her diary and look for clues and the number of her new boyfriend, Don, to see if he knew her whereabouts. As we know, Hae’s brother called Adnan thinking the number written in the corner of the page was Don’s. Adcock, the officer responding to the missing person report, followed up with his own call to Adnan’s cell at 6:24 PM while Adnan sat on the floor of Kristi’s apartment being seen. That call caused Adnan to shit his pants. We know that Jen called Kristi’s apartment while Adnan and Jay were there. Trial Tr. 2/16/2000 at 211:3-213:13. We know that Kristi’s boyfriend, Jeff, told Jen that she was supposed to pick up Jay at Gilston park (aka Westview Recreation Area). Trial Tr. 2/15/2000 at 187:18-25. This plan was subsequently scrapped and is evidence that Adcock reaching Adnan on his new cell prompted Adnan to call the audible and deviate from Bilal’s plan.
Jay and Adnan left Kristi’s place and sat in Adnan’s car. Trial Tr. 2/16/2000 at 213:15 - 214:4. Adnan was feeling that the walls were closing in and freaking out. I asserted in previous posts that this is the point at which Adnan switched Jay from being a reluctant alibi witness to a shanghaied accessory after the fact. I no longer believe that is the case. It’s more likely that Adnan kept Jay in the dark about what had happened to Hae until the trunk of her Nissan was opened. While it is entirely possible that Adnan freaked out and spilled to Jay what he had done immediately after getting the call from Officer Adcock, the police investigation suggests otherwise. As desperate as Adnan was, he was carefully schooled by Bilal to give up as little incriminating information as possible. This can be inferred in part based on Jen’s February 27, 1999 statement to the police, which we will discuss in due course.
For what happened next, it is important to remember that this was 1999. Smartphones with GPS would not be a thing for at least a few years. These guys were not taking the most direct routes to their destinations and were operating in panic mode. They were taking the ways they knew. When they didn’t know, they relied on paper maps with palm prints on them.
Sitting in his car outside Kristi’s apartment, Adnan made the half-baked decision to dispose of Hae’s body asafp instead of waiting until the next morning per Bilal’s plan. He and Jay drove in Adnan’s car to Jay’s house to pick up digging tools. From Jay’s house, they took 695 to Security Blvd. That is not the most direct route to where Hae's car and body were located at the Park N Ride, but it’s the route that Adnan knew. He had taken Security Blvd. earlier that day from the Park N Ride to the Best Buy that is located near the highway exit. Upon exiting 695, Adnan called Yasar Ali’s cell to have him convey the message to Bilal that Adnan would not be able to be at the mosque to lead the youth group prayers that evening. That is the 6:59 PM ping at tower L651A. Immediately after that, Jay left a voice message to Jen’s pager scrapping the plan to meet at Gilston Park. That is the 7:00 PM call pinging the same tower. The close timing of the calls indicates that Jay and Adnan were together, likely in Adnan’s car heading to the Park N Ride.
Upon arriving at the Park N Ride, Adnan popped the trunk to Hae’s Sentra to load the digging materials. This is when Jay likely first saw Hae’s body in the trunk of her Nissan and was the first time Jay knew that Hae was dead. I know what Jay said in his 2014 interview in The Intercept. Some of what he said there adds up while some does not. As you will see in subsequent parts, Jay was compelled to change his story so many times under so many threats that he didn't know down from up. It was likely from this point at seeing Hae's body that Jay went from alibi witness to accessory after the fact. There was no flexing on Adnan's part. No, "I killed the bitch!" If anything, Adnan likely told Jay that he didn't know what happened to her. Adnan then instructed Jay to follow him in Adnan’s Honda. This is when Adnan likely reached for the map in Hae’s glove box and left his palm print. Adnan stopped about one mile from Hae’s burial site and told Jay to wait for him there. This is critical. Even though Adnan had abandoned Bilal’s ridiculously detailed plot, he was still trying to adhere to Bilal’s admonition to avoid disclosing incriminating evidence. If Jay didn’t know where the body was buried, he could not share that information with anyone else. I know that you’re thinking that I’m pulling this out of my ass, but consider the following. The day after the public received news of Hae’s body being discovered in Leakin Park, a witness reported to the police that he saw a young black male acting suspicious and hanging around the road near some concrete barriers at Leakin Park by a light colored vehicle (Adnan’s car looked like this. The police dismissed the witness's report at the time because the spot where the black kid was acting suspiciously was a mile from Hae’s burial site. Jay would later tell investigating detectives during his first recorded interview that he parked near some concrete barriers at Leakin Park when he was helping Adnan dispose of Hae’s body. MPIA 244-245.
While Adnan was doing a half-assed burial, Jen called Adnan’s cell because Jay’s message changing the plan to meet up was confusing to her. MPIA 174. Adnan did not toss his phone to Jay to speak with his buddy, Jen, the way he tossed his phone to Jay earlier that day to speak with Nisha who Jay did not know. Adnan told Jen that Jay would call her soon. He said that because Jay was probably not there. After finishing with the body, Adnan drove Hae’s car back to where he left Jay with his Honda. Adnan had Jay follow him down Edmondson Avenue where he had Jay stop and wait while Adnan drove a few blocks down and left Hae’s car at the lot by the 300 block of Edgewood Street. Again, following Bilal’s rules, Adnan was making sure that Jay did not know the precise location of Hae’s car. Adnan hoofed it back to Edmondson Ave where Jay was waiting in the Honda. Thus, Jay had, at best, a rough idea where Hae’s car could be found.
Jay would later tell the police that he happened to be in the area a few days before his February 28th interview and saw that Hae’s car was still there. MPIA 251. It is unlikely that Jay just “happened to be there.” He likely revisited the location to look around and see precisely where Adnan had ditched Hae’s car. That is how he was able to help the detectives locate the vehicle on February 28th.
Jay used Adnan’s phone to page Jen instructing her to pick him up at the Value City parking lot. Adnan dropped Jay off at the parking lot where Jen was waiting. Upon getting into Jen’s car, Jay did what almost any person who had just witnessed such a crime would do. He did what Bilal knew an unnecessary witness would do. He did what a person outside of Bilal and Adnan’s circle of trust would do. He told his good friend that Adnan Syed murdered Hae Min Lee.

The Police Investigation - "Good Cop" Part

Do we really need to explain why Jay did not immediately go to the cops? Being black, poor and having a history of negative encounters with cops should be enough. Add to that, the fact that Jay only had partial information. He knew Hae was murdered. He knew Adnan played a role. But he didn’t know the where, when or how. Even if he did, Jay would likely have not gone to the police. There is not much of an incentive to tell your story to people you expect will screw you. Jen did not go to the police either. According to Jen, Jay did not know where Hae’s body was buried nor did he know where her car was located. I used to think that this was Jay being careful by holding information back from Jen so that she would not have enough to go to the cops either. But neither Jay nor any other kid in his situation who was freaked out at what he had just experienced would be capable of being that calculating. Jay was not schooled in the art of criminal behavior by the likes of Bilal Ahmed. He was in no state of mind where he could carve out what he should tell Jen and what he should withhold. He dumped what he knew on her along with some of what he thought he knew. For example, because he picked up Adnan from the Best Buy, Jay incorrectly assumed that Adnan must have murdered her there. At any rate, Jay and Jen kept this huge secret from the cops although they both later admitted to telling a few others. Jay told his neighbor while Jen told a couple of her co-workers. It is important to note that according to Jen’s statement, Jay did not mention anything to her about Adnan saying that he planned to kill Hae or bragging afterward that he did it.
Because of their respective relationships with Hae, the cops questioned both Don and Adnan while it was still a missing persons case. Adnan did not do himself any favors by contradicting what he had told Adcock on January 13th about getting a ride from Hae. MPIA 814. Hae’s disappearance continued as a missing person’s case until February 9, 1999 when her body was found by Alonzo Sellers, an employee at Coppin State College. Sellers reported his discovery to the campus cops who then reported it to BCPD. Despite having done the right thing, Sellers was the first suspect upon whom the police focused their attention. His checkered past did not exactly cloak him in the shroud of innocence. In fact, Alonzo had a penchant for running around not shrouded in anything with multiple arrests for indecent exposure. MPIA 673-690 (not included in AdnanSyedWiki). Even if he was a model citizen, the cops would have given Sellers a close look and not just because he is black. It is common in cases like this for the cops to give scrutiny to the person who appears to be a good Samaritan reporting a crime. Some free advice to any innocent person who stumbles across a dead body: Save yourself a lot of grief and report it anonymously. If you're a murderer, please leave copies of your drivers license and social security number along with your fingerprints and blood samples at the crime scene and report the dead body in person at the police station.
The fact that the cops were treating Sellers as their primary suspect during the days following the discovery of Hae’s body was not disclosed to the public. There were no news stories about suspects or details about the investigation until Adnan’s arrest on February 28, 1999. Even Sellers’ name was not in the news. It was only reported as follows:
“Baltimore police said a man out walking found the grave, which was about 100 feet off Franklintown Road in the secluded West Baltimore park – about a mile from Woodlawn High.” Baltimore Sun, February 12, 1999, pg. 8C.
The police record shows that Sellers was given the third degree by the cops for almost two weeks. His work records were pulled and he was subjected to two polygraph tests. MPIA 661-672. The investigation of Sellers cuts against the idea that the police dedicated themselves to framing Adnan. That said, I would not put it past these cops to do such a thing, but they did not have enough information at the time to do so.
We know that Det. Massey received the anonymous call pointing the cops in Adnan’s direction one day after news of the discovery of Hae’s body was announced. Not being a linguist, Massey noted that the person on the phone sounded Asian. I’ll go out on a limb and say that Massey probably would not be able to distinguish the accent of Apu of the Simpsons from William Hung, the unfortunate contestant from American Idol. The caller suggested that the cops call Yasar Ali, the same person Adnan called at 6:59 PM on January 13th likely to convey the message that he would not be leading prayers that night at the mosque. As indicated in more detail in the Leaving Baltimore post, the tipster was probably part of the same boys group at the mosque mentored by Bilal Ahmed. The anonymous tip prompted the grand jury to subpoena Adnan’s cell records on February 16, 1999, which were received from AT&T the next day. Despite the tip, the focus of the investigation continued to be on Sellers until he was cleared on February 24, 1999 (the validity of polygraph tests is beyond the scope of this post). The police did, however, follow up on the tip by interviewing Yasar on February 15, 1999. Yasar didn’t give the cops anything to go on, but based on the calls made to Yasar in the cell records, you can be certain that he relayed to Adnan that he was hot. Adnan called Yasar on February 15th and four more times on February 17th.

2023.05.26 11:37 michaelmuttiah Don't do more... do less... (and keep your promises)

This week’s business lesson is about the long and slow journey learning to practise “via negativa.”
A mental model I first heard through Tim Ferriss, and later saw explained on Shane Parrish’s Blog Farnham Street.
Ever since I was in my mid-20’s I have been obsessed with Charlie Munger, Warren Buffett and mental models. The idea of simple systems to help simplify the way that I see the world.
So, how does a weird Latinny sounding thing have to do with me being shit at keeping promises?
I over promise, take on too much, people please, say yes when I mean to say no and end up letting people down. I break promises, not because I’m an asshole but because I get burnt out, and then cancel things.
My solution to life was always do more, work harder, hustle…
That shit makes me feel like I’m going to have a nervous breakdown.
Hence why “via negativa” was so important for me.
The premise is quite simple.
Instead of adding, subtract.
Remove that which is not useful or joyful and leave yourself with what’s left.
As a chronic over achiever and someone who wants to “be busy” all the time, when I first started this 2-3 years ago, it made my skin itch.
I see a spare afternoon or evening and I have to fill it.
Got an hour to myself? Let’s find someone to call.
This can also apply to things you do not enjoy in your business.
I see so many one man entrepreneurs and self employed people, drowning in the shit of what they don’t want to do.
Instead of parting with a little bit of cash to make their job 10x more enjoyable.
Here’s how 8 ways I used via negativa in my life, both personally and professionally:
  1. Hired a Virtual Assistant as soon as I could afford it
  2. Hired a video editor to run our Youtube Channel
  3. Hire someone to take care of our Operations and Admin
  4. Made it hard to book me for a premium coaching programme and discouraged people to join (£5K) because my heart isn’t set on it for the future
  5. Stop returning the calls of people who wanted different things from me, or always had problems, wanted attention, or would react when I was absent
  6. Keep a set schedule with work and home life, and writing time
  7. Eat the same things most days to remove choice (to clarify I can eat anything I like and am in good shape, but choices fuck with my head, so I eat lunch at the same cafe, generally don’t eat breakfast and eat a simple or small dinner)
  8. Maximise effort, time and attention to existing relationships in my life that give me joy and fill me up, and don’t seek out new and exciting shiny things
A lot of my stress and broken promises comes from doing too much, and trying to be too much for too many people.
One thing that always stuck with me about broken promises, is that the biggest person who get’s hurt is me.
My self esteem always takes a knock when I break a promise to myself and then to others.
It took my until I was 36, to start realising that if I want to achieve the ambitious goals I have in my life.
Alot of things and people need to be removed.
It’s not personal.
Even if people take it personally

America is on the Verge of the Biggest GDP and QQQ Bull Run in Human History
If you want the easiest way to make money off of what I'm saying, I made it as simple as possible for stupid fucking Apes.
https://preview.redd.it/s5wraobz452b1.jpg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bd68af35fed78631315df81b9212de3fdec8afa
QQQ will hit a new all time high before the end of 2023. That's it. That's all you need, one giant picture and a stock recommendation. But if you want a little bit more here ya go.
Haha, dum bers
You fucking monkeys don't know shit. You're all too scared of your god damned shadows because this world has eaten you up and spit you out. You got one fucking win on Shitadel two years ago and you've been mowed down trying to relive that glory. You all remind me of those fucking apes in 2001 too afraid to step forward and transcend by touching the monolith https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHWs3c3YNs4 . But this ape, ShittyStockPicker ain't afraid to take a fucking risk.
I’ve been hearing about the impending recession since covid started, I’ve been hearing about the collapse of the dollar since 1990. The internet is full of bears who want to see America punished for its imagined sins: greed, debt, laziness. Why, if you listened to those fucking bears who hate this country and want to see it fail you'd think America was two Oompa Loompas away from being sung a demeaning song about why it fucked up and dragged off the world stage. But I'm not one of those America haters. I'm like Warren Buffet, I never fucking bet against America. Ever.
The hard pill for America haters to swallow is that we are the best god damned system on the planet bar none. The culture we have built worships talent and those stupid enough to risk everything for a dream. And we don't give a flying fuck if you're a queer dragon-kintyped non-binary star planet. If you're stupid enough to try the impossible, we're going to fucking cheer you on. And when you achieve the impossible, we're going to fucking reward you with it by both worshiping you as a fucking god and more wealth than you know what to do with.
It's not that way in any other system. You won't find that in Europe, you're not going to find it in India. Don't even think about trying to find that in China. If you have a fucking crazy, insane longshot idea that just might fucking work the only people stupid enough to try live here. And its because if you're not descended from people who were told by their countrymen, "Hey, Gus, just shut the fuck up about going to the moon already and eat your fucking gruel." You said, "fuck it, I'm going to America and studying engineering until I can build the biggest ass ladder I can possibly build!" And that's still the America I believe in. And I believe that's the America /WallStreetBets believes in. So is it any fucking surprise then, that once again the United States is at the forefront of yet another technological revolution that is going to profoundly transform global society, rearrange international power structures, and change everything?
I've been struggling to explain what AI means to people. But here's my best shot, dumb fucks probably want to skip to the end for the TLDR: The Information Technology boom introduced sharing of information at 0 marginal cost. The AI boom is different from the Information Technology boom because it is the beginning of the generation of new information at 0 marginal cost. Information Age: Sharing information at 0 marginal cost
AI Age: Generation of new information at 0 marginal cost
Let that fucking sink in. Generation of information at 0 marginal cost from newspapers to rocket designs.
I don't know if you had the chance to listen to the $NVDA conference call, but holy shit I fucking creamed myself rubbing my dick to it. There's nothing that gets me off harder than Capitalism Erotica.
What the $NVDA call revealed is that corporate America is scrambling to build systems that utilize AI to keep their businesses competitive. There is no reluctance to adopt AI the same way there was reluctance to adopt IT technology 20 years ago. That's going to make adoption of AI happen fucking fast!
Many current CEO's remember companies going bust, or losing market share to a rival who was faster to adopt groundbreaking technology. The lesson they learned was that it is deadly to shrug off changes in technology.
The first wave of the AI boom is in stocks like $NVDA. Demand for their chips is going to be insane. The next wave, we'll see this show up in six to twelve months or so, is going to be the companies who adopted AI early and found obvious and unexpected ways to take advantage of 0 marginal cost information generation. The moment a company who adopted AI reports that an AI technology led to a blowout quarter we're going to see an explosion in stock prices and unimaginable GDP growth.
We’re not going into recession, we’re on the brink of pushing the world into an unprecedented era of GDP growth and exponential growth in the rate of improvement of living standards.
We’re months away from new all time highs on the Nasdaq. The American economy is about to rip the world’s face off with a GDP rally the likes of which the world had never seen.
TLDR: HAHAHAHAHA BERSSSSS R FUKKKKKKKK

https://sfstandard.com/business/first-republic-employees-laid-off-in-brief-scripted-phone-calls/:

In scripted calls this morning, roughly 1,000 employees at First Republic Bank were informed that their service was no longer needed.
Job cuts were expected at First Republic, which was acquired by JPMorgan Chase May 1 in a deal that involved a government seizure of the San Francisco-based regional bank. First Republic employees were told in a May 11 email that some employees would be laid off within weeks, with others offered transitional roles of between three and 12 months or permanent positions with JPMorgan.
A JPMorgan spokesperson didn't confirm the total number of employees who were laid off, but said that the company offered either transitional of full-time roles to "nearly 85%" of First Republic employees. The number of employees who did not receive an offer is less than the 20%-25% job cuts First Republic announced in an April earnings release, said the spokesperson.
San Francisco-based First Republic had 7,213 employees at the end of last year, according to its most recent annual filing, which would imply a layoff of roughly 1,000 employees on Thursday.
"The vast majority of First Republic employees will be offered employment at JPMorgan Chase—either through a transition period, or in many cases full-time," the bank said in a statement. "Employees who have not been offered a role will receive pay and benefits covering 60 days and will be offered a package that includes an additional lump sum payment and continuing benefits coverage."
California's Employment Development Department said it had not yet received any layoff notices from the banks.
'Cutthroat'
Laid-off employees will receive regular pay through June 9 along with payments in lieu of the company's 401K match, according to a recording of a layoff call obtained by The Standard. On or around June 13, they will receive a lump sum equivalent to 45 days of day and are eligible for additional payments based on years of service, said a human resources employee who delivered the news.
A First Republic employee, who asked not to be named due to potential employment reprecussions, said laid-off employees received the news in brief calls during which a department head and a human resources employee read prepared scripts that gave no reason for the layoff.
Employees said that even high-level employees at First Republic were not privy to the specifics of the layoffs and were not included in discussions.
Throughout Thursday, laid-off First Republic employees gathered on a private discussion forum to commiserate and share information on how to access benefits. Employees who had paid family leave scheduled said they were unclear on whether they were entitled to company compensation for that period, writing that they had received no additional information from human resources that day.
"Everyone has been kept in the dark, even high-level managers are not being consulted," the First Republic employee said, describing the layoff process as unceremonious and "cutthroat."
Banking Chaos
The First Republic job cuts are the second major banking layoff this week in the Bay Area, with around 500 former employees of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) getting pink slips from the bank's new owner, First Citizens Bank, on Wednesday.
Laid-off SVB workers were told in meetings with human resources staff they would remain employees of the First Citizens until June 9, with additional details about severance coming via email. According to one director-level employee, additional layoffs may be coming.
First Citizens snapped up SVB at a fire sale after the Santa Clara-based regional bank, which had served the Bay Area's technology and investment sectors for decades, was abruptly shut down by regulators after a bank run drained $40 billion from its balance sheet in a matter of hours. Two days before it was placed under receivership, SVB had revealed in a filing that it had sold a trove of securities that had lost value as the Federal Reserve ratcheted up interest rates.
SVB's failure kicked off a period of chaos in the banking sector as shareholders scrutinized other regional banks with high rates of deposits above the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation's $250,000 limit and liabilities on their books. Customers of First Republic, which served well-heeled customers likely to hold uninsured deposits, withdrew about $100 billion in deposits during March; JPMorgan Chase and a coalition of other banks deposited $30 billion into the bank in an attempt to shore up the floundering institution.
In an April 24 earnings release, First Republic announced a plan to lay off up to 25% of its workforce and other cost-cutting initiatives, but those efforts failed to reassure investors as the bank's stock sunk to new lows: It closed at $3.51 per share the Friday before it seized and sold to JPMorgan. Shareholders are expected to be wiped out in the deal.
First Republic employees described mixed emotions regarding the bank's failure but noted anger and disappointment among employees who had significant compensation tied up in the company's stock. In a statement to Congress this month, former First Republic CEO Michael J. Roffler said that First Republic was "contaminated overnight by the contagion that spread from the unprecedented failures of two regional banks," referring to SVB and New York-based Signature Bank, which was also shuttered in March.
First Republic was founded in San Francisco by Jim Herbert in 1985 and grew to become the third-largest bank in the Bay Area and the 14th largest in the country at the end of last year. It catered to high-net-worth individuals, with roughly 40% of its deposits originating in the Bay Area, and was known for attractive mortgage rates and high-touch customer service, gaining a base of loyal customers and longtime employees.
Laid-off First Republic employees who spoke with The Standard described the abrupt layoffs, delivered by department in the form of scripted video calls lasting less than 10 minutes, as the culmination of a tense few weeks during which they received very little communication from JPMorgan.
"There was no respect; they treated us like a red-headed stepchild," said one East Coast-based First Republic employee, who asked not to be named due to job repercussions.
The employee likened the temporary positions offered by JPMorgan to "golden handcuffs" because if employees refuse the offers, they will not receive any exit pay. On or around June 1, employees who are offered temporary roles will receive information about the duration of their transition period in their offer letters, said a JPMorgan spokesperson.
"It's unnecessary to put anyone through that. At least with SVB, they just killed everyone right then and there," the employee said. "I don't understand why [JPMorgan] is dragging this out."
Changing Customer Service
A major lender and employer in the Bay Area, First Republic was considered a cornerstone of the region's real estate sector.
The bank offered low-rate mortgages to affluent clients and understood the nuances of Bay Area business, making it the lender of choice both for many individuals, startups and small businesses. It was also embedded in San Francisco's pool of affordable housing, having offered a $100 million revolving credit facility to the San Francisco Housing Accelerator Fund, which assists nonprofits in acquiring and renovating low-income housing.
First Republic customers received letters from JPMorgan Chase earlier this month informing them that they should continue to use their usual branches for banking. First Republic customers will eventually get access to JPMorgan’s services, according to the letter.
First Republic employees said that given limited communication from JPMorgan, people in client-facing roles had struggled to answer questions from customers beyond the bare minimum what would happen with their accounts.
But there are signs that JPMorgan, the largest bank in the U.S., will be taking a much different approach to lending than First Republic.
JPMorgan has begun culling personal lines of credit, telling customers that they will no longer be offered when they come up for renewal, according to the Information. The bank reportedly does not offer personal lines of credit.
Real estate professionals believe that the failure of First Republic could have ripple effects in the Bay Area housing market as well. On a May 2 shareholder call, JPMorgan Chase CEO indicated that the days of low-cost mortgages were over.
“We’re not going to be putting a lot of cheap jumbo mortgage loans on our books,” Dimon said. "First Republic did a great job at service. But being in the low-cost lending business is not what JPMorgan does.”

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/jpmorgan-lays-off-about-1-000-former-first-republic-employees-c2afa328:

JPMorgan Chase & Co. laid off about 1,000 former First Republic Bank employees Thursday, weeks after its takeover of the failed lender.
The bank said about 85% of the former First Republic’s roughly 7,200 employees received full-time or transitional roles with JPMorgan.
JPMorgan JPM, +0.24% said it had been transparent from the beginning with the former First Republic employees that not everyone would be retained.
“The vast majority of First Republic employees will be offered employment at JPMorgan Chase – either through a transition period, or in many cases full-time,” JPMorgan said in a statement. “Employees who have not been offered a role will receive pay and benefits covering 60 days and will be offered a package that includes an additional lump sum payment and continuing benefits coverage. We’re also providing resources to help them find new opportunities here or outside the firm.”
JPMorgan noted that the cuts were smaller than the 20%-25% layoffs First Republic had announced in April, and said most of those laid off Thursday had been initially identified in April.
The New York-based banking giant took over First Republic on May 1 after winning an FDIC auction after a disastrous run on deposits that battered its stock. San Francisco-based First Republic became the fourth U.S. bank to fail this year, and was the second-largest bank failure in U.S. history.

https://www.wicz.com/story/48974110/jpmorgan-is-cutting-about-1000-first-republic-bank-employees:

JPMorgan Chase informed about 1,000 First Republic Bank employees on Thursday that they will no longer have jobs.
JPMorgan acquired most of First Republic’s assets earlier this month after the San Francisco-based regional bank was seized by the government. It marked the second-biggest bank failure in US history.
A JPMorgan spokesperson told CNN that the bank updated all First Republic employees on Thursday about their future employment status and the vast majority — or nearly 85% — have been offered a transitional or full-time role.
That leaves 15%, or about 1,000, First Republic employees who are not receiving an employment offer. News of the job impact was previously reported by the Financial Times.
JPMorgan said the company’s May 1 deal with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to buy most of First Republic did not include all of the company’s employees.
“We’ve been transparent with their employees and kept our promise to update them on their employment status within 30 days,” JPMorgan said in a statement. “We recognize that they have been under stress and uncertainty since March and hope that today will bring clarity and closure.”
The bank said that employees who have not been offered a role will receive pay and benefits covering 60 days and will be offered a package that includes an additional lump sum as well as continuing benefits coverage and resources to find new opportunities.
It’s not clear how many First Republic employees that have been offered employment at JPMorgan will have full-time versus transitional roles.
The transitional roles being offered to some First Republic employees will last for a period of between three and 12 months, JPMorgan said.
After regulators shut First Republic down, JPMorgan won a competitive bidding process run by the FDIC. JPMorgan agreed to make a $10.6 billion payment to the corporation.
Some progressives including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have been critical of the First Republic deal because it allowed America’s biggest bank to get even bigger.

https://www.ft.com/content/935fa23a-c295-4ba0-abd5-63fcf9649609:

JPMorgan Chase is cutting about 1,000 First Republic employees following its rushed takeover of the California-based bank earlier this month, said people familiar with the matter. The job losses, which will be felt across all of First Republic’s businesses, are equal to about 15 per cent of its roughly 7,000 workers, the people said. JPMorgan notified the affected First Republic employees on Thursday that they would not be receiving an offer to move to JPMorgan, one of the people said. The cuts are a further blow to First Republic employees who have already had a difficult two months. Following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March, customers of First Republic withdrew tens of billions of dollars of deposits. First Republic was ultimately shuttered as US regulators orchestrated its sale over a weekend to JPMorgan. JPMorgan said it had followed through with a commitment to First Republic employees to provide clarity on their employment status within 30 days of the deal, which closed on May 1. “We recognise that they have been under stress and uncertainty since March and hope that today will bring clarity and closure,” the bank said. “The vast majority of First Republic employees will be offered employment at JPMorgan Chase — either through a transition period, or in many cases full-time.” Workers in transition roles will be employed for up to 12 months. News of the cuts was reported earlier by Bloomberg. JPMorgan, which has about 300,000 staff worldwide, said employees who had not been offered a new position would receive pay and benefits for two months and will be offered a lump-sum payment with continuing benefits. The JPMorgan action is less severe than cuts planned by First Republic last month, days before it was sold, to cut as much as 25 per cent of its workforce in order to reduce costs. Marianne Lake, co-head of JPMorgan’s consumer and community banking division, said in a presentation to investors on Monday that First Republic’s business had “seen stabilisation of clients and deposits”. “In fact, since the acquisition we’ve actually seen a small net inflow of deposits, she said. “That’s something we’re very focused on both of those two things — stabilising and winning back the client and their business.” First Republic primarily catered to well-off customers with millions of dollars in assets. JPMorgan’s acquisition will boost the Wall Street bank’s efforts to expand in wealth management.

REMINDER:

At the beginning of the month, the FDIC and JP Morgan Chase entered into a loss-share transaction on single family, residential and commercial loans it purchased of the former First Republic Bank.
The FDIC will share in the losses and potential recoveries on the loans covered by the loss–share agreement with JP Morgan.
https://www.reddit.com/Superstonk/comments/134iami/fdic_alert_jpmorgan_chase_bank_national/
Loss-share transaction:
Under an SLA, the FDIC absorbs a portion of the loss on a specified pool of assets sold through the resolution of a failing bank - in effect sharing the loss with the purchaser of the failing bank.
Does shared loss put the taxpayer on the hook for additional losses down the road?:
No. When the FDIC calculates the estimated cost of a failure, it takes into account all expected losses on the assets covered in shared-loss agreements (SLAs). These current market assumptions are built into the cost of failure at the time of resolution. Thus, the cost of all expected future payments are recognized at the time of bank failure and no losses are deferred. Any sharing loss payments are made from receivership funds from the specific failed bank or thrift or, if those are insufficient, from the FDIC's Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF). The DIF is funded by assessments paid by insured banks and thrifts and it is not taxpayer funded.
How does sharing loss work?
The FDIC uses two forms of shared loss. The first form is for commercial assets and the second for residential mortgages. For commercial assets, the SLAs cover an eight-year period with the first five years for losses and recoveries and the final three years for recoveries only. The FDIC typically offers a range of coverage terms depending upon the market conditions and the location of the assets on covered assets up to a stated threshold amount (generally the FDIC's dollar estimate of the total projected losses on shared loss assets). Loss coverage may also be provided for loan or note sales, but such sales require prior approval by the FDIC. Recoveries on loans which experience loss events are split, in most instances, with 20% of the recovery going to the assuming bank and 80% to the FDIC. For single-family mortgages, the SLAs are for ten years and have the same 80/20 split as the commercial assets. The FDIC provides coverage on three basic single-family first lien mortgage loss events: modification, short sale, and when the property is sold after foreclosure. Second liens are permitted to be charged off according to regulatory criteria when the first lien is not held by the assuming bank. Since the inception of SLAs, the basis for sharing losses with an assuming bank has undergone some change. Until March 26, 2010, the FDIC shared losses with assuming banks on an 80/20 basis until the losses exceeded an established threshold defined in the SLA, after which the basis for sharing losses shifted to a 95/5 basis. Sharing losses on a 95/5 basis was eliminated for all SLAs executed after March 26, 2010.
Does the FDIC receive any benefits if the assuming bank makes money on the covered assets?
Yes. If there are recoveries on assets that have been charged off by the failed bank or the assuming bank, then the FDIC receives 80 percent of the recoveries.
What types of losses on the assets are covered and when does the FDIC reimburse the buyer for those losses?
The FDIC covers credit losses. The FDIC does not cover losses associated with changes in interest rates. For single-family loans, the assuming bank is paid when the loan is modified or the property is sold. For commercial loans, the assuming bank is paid when the assets are written down according to established regulatory guidelines or when the assets are sold.
How does the FDIC know it is getting the best deal with shared loss?
When the FDIC is preparing the sale of a failing bank or thrift, the FDIC reaches out to numerous potential bidders to bid for the customer deposits and the failing bank's assets. The sale relies on a confidential, competitive bidding process. In addition, the FDIC uses financial advisors to estimate asset values. After the bids are received, the FDIC selects the least costly option. To facilitate that analysis, the FDIC may dictate the terms and conditions of a sharing loss arrangement and the assets to be covered when potential assuming banks bid on a failing bank. This allows the FDIC to more quickly analyze and compare each of the bids to determine which is the least costly to the Deposit Insurance Fund. The terms and conditions also enable the FDIC to monitor the SLAs effectively. When market conditions are at their worst, shared loss can save the Deposit Insurance Fund money. As a result, shared loss agreements enabled the FDIC to sell the assets, but without requiring that the FDIC accept the low prices prevalent at the time. Instead, the FDIC sold the assets to assuming banks at a discount and they were incented under the SLAs to service and manage the assets, resolving them at a higher recovery amount once market conditions improved, splitting the higher recovery with the FDIC.
How big is the shared loss program? How much money has the FDIC saved?
During the recent Financial Crisis the FDIC entered into 590 shared loss agreements with Acquiring Institutions from 304 Failed Bank receiverships covering $216.4 billion in assets. The estimated savings exceed $41 billion, compared to an outright cash sale of those assets. List of shared loss Agreements since July 10, 2008
Why doesn't the FDIC use shared loss for all failures?
The FDIC has developed a variety of resolution methods designed to enhance the marketability of a failing bank. SLAs are just one of the resolution methods the FDIC has available to utilize. Market conditions dictate the resolution types the FDIC offers for each failing bank and by law the FDIC must select the least costly resolution transaction for the failing bank.
What type of oversight does the FDIC have over the SLAs?
The FDIC conducts annual on-site reviews and regular off-site monitoring of records of covered losses and overall compliance with the SLAs. It also requires assuming banks to provide quarterly reports to ensure compliance with the program and to monitor the performance of the assets. Lastly, if the assuming bank is not in compliance with the SLA, the FDIC has the right to stop shared loss payments until the problem findings are resolved, and, in extreme cases, to sell the assets through a competitive bid process.
For SLAs that cover single-family loans, must the assuming bank honor the FDIC's loan modification program?
The terms of the SFSLA require the Acquirer to modify loans using an approved modification program for single-family, owner-occupied loans. One of the approved programs is the FDIC loan modification program which adjusts the current loan terms to achieve an affordable payment by first reducing the loan interest rate, then extending the loan term, and, where necessary, offering forbearance of principal. The goal of the loan modification programs is to provide an affordable monthly payment. The Acquirer can propose an alternative loan modification program that will achieve the goals of providing affordable payments consistent with cost effectiveness. If the FDIC concurs, then the Acquirer can use the alternative program.
Are assuming banks permitted to conduct portfolio sales of shared-loss assets?
Yes, if the FDIC consents and the assuming bank satisfies the applicable provisions of the agreement.

2023.05.25 20:52 Nik-Yura Moneta. Part 2 - Guardian and protectress

Moneta. Part 2 - Guardian and protectress
The Demon of Death who appeared to Fedmahn Kassad in the valley of the Time Tombs - surprisingly resembles the Gorgon Medusa:
In Greek mythology, Medusa (/mɪˈdjuːzə, -sə/; Ancient Greek: Μέδουσα, romanized: Médousa, lit. 'guardian, protectress'),also called Gorgo, was one of the three monstrous Gorgons, generally described as winged human females with living venomous snakes in place of hair. Those who gazed into her eyes would turn to stone. Was beheaded by the hero Perseus. [1]
Guardian and protectress!
There were also terrible Gorgons in this country. Their entire bodies were covered with scales as glistening and hard as steel. No sword could cut through these scales, only the curved sword of Hermes. The Gorgons had huge copper hands with sharp steel claws. On their heads, instead of hair, venomous snakes moved, hissing. The faces of the Gorgons, with their fangs as sharp as daggers, their lips as red as blood, and their eyes burning with rage, were filled with such malice, were so terrible that everyone turned to stone at the very sight of the Gorgons. [2]

...blood drips on her flesh, her pale flesh, reflective now, flesh as cold as dead metal... ...he watches through passion - dimmed eyes as Moneta’s lips wither and curl back, revealing rows of steel blades where teeth had been... her eyes... ...her eyes like red jewels, blazing with a mad heat... ...Kassad slams both hands against the soil, lifts himself away from her... from it... his strength insane but not enough as terrible gravities press them together... sucking like a lamprfey’s mouth as he threatens to explode, looks in her eyes... the death of worlds! [3]

On wings with golden glittering feathers, the Gorgons flew rapidly through the air. [2]

- How did I land? Suspensor field? Parachute? - You descended under a wing of gold foil. [3]

According to myths, the Gorgons lived "on the Western edge of the earth, the country where the goddess Night and the God of death Thanatos reigns" [2] (i.e., where the Sun hides - in the Kingdom of the dead). Thanatos - one of the prototypes of the Shrike, but the goddess of Night...

- The HTN stuff doesn’t simulate, - whined Cadet Radinski, the best AI expert Kassad could find and bribe to explain, - it dreams, dreams with the best historical accuracy in the Web - way beyond the sum of its parts cause it plugs in holistic insight as well as facts - and when it dreams, it lets us dream with it. Kassad had not understood but he had believed. And then she came again. In the First U.S. Vietnam War they made love in the aftermath of an ambush during the darkness and terror of a night patrol. Kassad wore rough camouflage clothes - with no underwear because of the jungle crotch rot - and a steel helmet not much more advanced than those at Agincourt. She wore black pajamas and sandals, the universal garb of the Southeast Asian peasant. And the Viet Cong. Then neither of them wore anything as they made love standing in the night, her back against a tree and her legs wrapped around him, while beyond them the world exploded in the green glow of perimeter flares and the sputter-crack of claymores. She came to him on the second day of Gettysburg and again at Borodino, where the clouds of powder smoke hung above the piles of bodies like a vapor congealed from departing souls. They made love in the shattered hulk of an AFC in Hellas Basin while the hovertank battle still raged and the red dust of the approaching simoon scraped and shrieked at the titanium hull. “Tell me your name", - he had whispered in Standard. She shook her head. "Are you real - outside the simulation?" - he asked in the Japanese-English of that era. She had nodded and leaned closer to kiss him. They lay together in a sheltered place among the ruins of Brasilia while deathbeams from Chinese EMVs played like blue searchlights on broken ceramic walls. During an unnamed battle after a siege of a forgotten tower city on the Russian steppes, he pulled her back into the shattered room where they had made love, and he whispered: "I want to stay with you." She touched his lips with a finger and shook her head. After the evacuation of New Chicago, as they lay on the hundredth-floor balcony where Kassad had set his sniper’s nest for the last U.S. Presidents hopeless rear-guard action, he placed his hand on the warm flesh between her breasts and said: "Can you ever join me… out there?" She touched his cheek with her palm and smiled. ... Kassad dreamed of her often. He had never learned her name, she had never spoken, but he could have recognized her touch and scent in total darkness among a thousand others. He thought of her as Mystery. When other young officers went whoring or seeking girlfriends in the indigenie populations, Kassad would remain on base or take long walks through strange cities. He kept his obsession with Mystery secret, knowing full well how it would read on a psych report. Sometimes, on bivouac under multiple moons or in the womblike zero-g of a troop transport hold, Kassad would realize how insane his love affair with a phantom truly was. But then he would recall the small mole under her left breast which he had kissed one night, feeling her heartbeat under his lips as the ground itself shook from the firing of the big guns near Verdun. He would remember the impatient gesture with which she brushed back her hair as her cheek rested on his thigh. ... On the night before the Ouster retreat, Kassad left the command conference on the HS Brazil, farcast to his HQ in the Indelibies north of the Hyne Valley, and took his command car to the summit to watch the final bombardment. The nearest of the tactical nuclear strikes was forty-five kilometers away. The plasma bombs blossomed like orange and blood-red flowers planted in a perfect grid. Kassad counted more than two hundred dancing columns of green light as the hellwhip lances ripped the broad plateau to shreds. And even before he slept, while he sat on the flare skirt of the EMV and shook pale afterimages from his eyes, she came. She wore a pale blue dress and walked lightly between the dead burr-root plants on the hillside. The breeze lifted the hem of the soft fabric of her dress. Her face and arms were pale, almost translucent. She called his name - he could almost hear the words - and then the second wave of bombardment rolled in across the plain below him and everything was lost in noise and flame. [3]

Nyx (/nɪks/ NIX; Ancient Greek: Νύξ Nýx, [nýks], "Night") is the Greek goddess and personification of night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation and mothered other personified deities, such as Hypnos (Sleep) and Thanatos (Death), with Erebus (Darkness). She is the first child of Chaos. She is typically portrayed as either a winged goddess with a dark cloud halo or dressed in black surrounded by dark mist. Her Roman equivalent is Nox (Night). [1]
Her appearances are sparse in surviving mythology, but reveal her as a figure of such exceptional power and beauty that she is feared by Zeus himself. In Hesiod's Theogony, Nyx is born of Chaos. With Erebus (Darkness), Nyx gives birth to Aether (Brightness) and Hemera (Day). Later, on her own, Nyx gives birth to Moros (Doom, Destiny), the Keres (Destruction, Death), Thanatos (Death), Hypnos (Sleep), the Oneiroi (Dreams), Momus (Blame), Oizys (Pain, Distress), the Hesperides, the Moirai (Fates), Nemesis (Indignation, Retribution), Apate (Deceit), Philotes (Friendship), Geras (Old Age), and Eris (Strife).
Now it is clear how and with whose help the Moneta appeared to Fedmahn Kassad in his dreams?

In a kylix by the painter Aison (circa 425 to circa 410 BCE) Theseus drags the Minotaur from a temple-like labyrinth, yet the goddess who attends him in this Attic representation is Athena. [1]
Athena[b] or Athene,[c] often given the epithet Pallas,[d] is an ancient Greek goddess associated with wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. As Athena Promachos, she was believed to lead soldiers into battle. Athena represented the disciplined, strategic side of war, in contrast to her brother Ares, the patron of violence, bloodlust, and slaughter - "the raw force of war". Athena was believed to only support those fighting for a just cause and was thought to view war primarily as a means to resolve conflict. As the patroness of heroes and warriors, Athena was believed to favor those who used cunning and intelligence rather than brute strength. [1]

The New Bushido Code which governed Colonel Kassad’s life had evolved out of the necessity for the military class to survive. After the obscenities of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries on Old Earth, when military leaders had committed their nations to strategies wherein entire civilian populations were legitimate targets while their uniformed executioners sat safe in self-contained bunkers fifty meters under the earth, the repugnance of the surviving civilians was so great that for more than a century the word “military” was an invitation to a lynching. As the New Bushido evolved it combined the age-old concepts of honor and individual courage with the need to spare civilians whenever possible. It also saw the wisdom of returning to the pre-Napoleonic concepts of small, “nontotal” wars with defined goals and proscribed excesses. The Code demanded a forsaking of nuclear weapons and strategic bombing campaigns in all but the most extreme cases but, more than that, it demanded a return to Old Earth medieval concepts of set battles between small, professional forces at a mutually agreed-upon time in a place where destruction of public and private property would be kept to a minimum. ... From his first minutes on South Bressia, Kassad realized that the New Bushido was dead. Eighty thousand superbly armed and trained FORCE:ground troops advanced from their staging areas, seeking battle in an unpopulated place. Ouster forces retreated behind a line of scorched earth, leaving only booby traps and dead civilians. FORCE used farcasters to outmaneuver the enemy, to force him to fight. The Ousters responded with a barrage of nuclear and plasma weapons, pinning the ground troops under forcefields while the Ouster infantry retreated to prepared defenses around cities and drop-ship staging areas. What had been forecast as a two-day battle ground on for thirty days, then sixty. Warfare had been thrown back to the twentieth or twenty-first century: long, grim campaigns fought through the brick dust of ruined cities over the corpses of civilians. The eighty thousand original FORCE troops were ground up, reinforced with a hundred thousand more, and were still being decimated when the call went out for two hundred thousand more. Only the grim resolve of Meina Gladstone and a dozen other determined senators kept the war alive and the troops dying while the billions of voices of the All Thing and the AI Advisory Council called for disengagement. Kassad had understood the change of tactics almost at once. His street-fighting instincts had risen to the forefront even before most of his division was wiped out in the Battle of the Stoneheap. While other FORCE commanders were all but ceasing to function, frozen into indecision by this violation of the New Bushido, Kassad—in command of his regiment and in temporary command of his division after the nuking of Command Group Delta—was trading men for time and calling for the release of fusion weapons to spearhead his own counterattack. By the time the Ousters withdrew ninety-seven days after the FORCE “rescue” of Bressia, Kassad had earned the double-edged nickname of the Butcher of South Bressia. It was rumored that even his own troops were afraid of him. And Kassad dreamed of her with dreams that were more—and less—than dreams. On the last night of the Battle for Stoneheap, in the maze of dark tunnels where Kassad and his hunter-killer groups used sonics and T-5 gas to flush out the last warrens of Ouster commandos, the Colonel fell asleep amid the flame and screams and felt the touch of her long fingers on his cheek and the soft compression of her breasts against him. When they entered New Vienna on the morning after the space strike Kassad had called in, the troops following the glass-smooth, twenty-meter-wide burn grooves into the lanced city, Kassad had stared without blinking at the rows of human heads lying on the pavement, carefully lined up as if to welcome the rescuing FORCE troops with their accusatory stares. Kassad had returned to his command EMV, closed the hatches, and—curling up in the warm darkness smelling of rubber, heated plastics, charged ions—had heard her Whispers over the babble of the C3 channels and implant coding. She called his name—he could almost hear the words—and then the second wave of bombardment rolled in across the plain below him and everything was lost in noise and flame. [3]

Athena is associated with the myth of Perseus and the Gorgon Medusa. However, in the myth, the role of Athena is unsightly - she herself turned the beautiful Medusa into a monster, and then arranged Perseus' campaign to kill Medusa. In "Hyperion Cantos" there is no such turnover. The conflict unfolds in the inner world of Fedmahn Kassad: when He turns to the methods of warfare of Ares, the demon Medusa takes the place of the goddess Athena.

And finally - it is impossible not to recall such a prototype of Moneta as Valkyrie. And specifically - the leader of the valkyries - Freyja.
In Norse paganism, Freyja (Old Norse "(the) Lady") is a goddess associated with love, beauty, fertility, sex, war, gold, and seiðr (magic for seeing and influencing the future). Freyja is the owner of the necklace Brísingamen, rides a chariot pulled by two cats, is accompanied by the boar Hildisvíni, and possesses a cloak of falcon feathers. By her husband Óðr, she is the mother of two daughters, Hnoss and Gersemi. Along with her twin brother Freyr, her father Njörðr, and her mother (Njörðr's sister, unnamed in sources), she is a member of the Vanir. Stemming from Old Norse Freyja, modern forms of the name include Freya, Freyia, and Freja.
Freyja rules over her heavenly field, Fólkvangr, where she receives half of those who die in battle. The other half go to the god Odin's hall, Valhalla. Within Fólkvangr lies her hall, Sessrúmnir. [2]

Later, in the carnage of the valley, Moneta and a few others of the Chosen Warriors found Kassad’s body still wrapped in a death embrace with the battered Shrike. They removed Kassad with care, carried him to a waiting tent in the valley, washed and tended to his ravaged body, and bore him through the multitudes to the Crystal Monolith. There the body of Colonel Fedmahn Kassad was laid on a bier of white marble, and weapons were set at his feet. In the valley, a great bonfire filled the air with light. All up and down the valley, men and women moved with torches while other people descended through the lapis lazuli sky, some in flying craft as insubstantial as molded bubbles, others on wings of energy or wrapped in circles of green and gold. Later, when the stars were in place burning bright and cold above the light-filled valley, Moneta made her farewells and entered the Sphinx. The multitudes sang. In the fields beyond, small rodents poked among fallen pennants and the scattered remnants of carapace and armor, metal blade and melted steel. Toward midnight, the crowd stopped singing, gasped, and moved back. The Time Tombs glowed. Fierce tides of anti-entropic force drove the crowds farther back—to the entrance of the valley, across the battlefield, back to the city glowing softly in the night. In the valley, the great Tombs shimmered, faded from gold to bronze, and started their long voyage back. [3]

Konstantin Vasilyev, \"Valkyrie over a Fallen Warrior\"

And a poetic addition. Sorry for the big quote:

To Kassad’s left, the Valley of the Time Tombs stretched away as always, only the cliff walls were toppled now, worn down by erosion or landslide and carpeted with high grass. The Tombs themselves looked new, only recently constructed, with workmen’s scaffolds still in place around the Obelisk and Monolith. Each of the aboveground Tombs glowed bright gold, as if bound and burnished in the precious metal. The doors and entrances were sealed. Heavy and inscrutable machinery sat around the Tombs, ringing the Sphinx, with massive cables and wire-slender booms running to and fro. Kassad knew at once that he was in the future—perhaps centuries or millennia in the future—and that the Tombs were on the verge of being launched back to his own time and beyond. Kassad looked behind him. Several thousand men and women stood in row upon row along the grassy hillside where once a cliff had been. They were totally silent, armed, and arrayed facing Kassad like a battle line awaiting its leader. Skinsuit fields flickered around some, but others wore only the fur, wings, scales, exotic weapons, and elaborate colorations which Kassad had seen in his earlier visit with Moneta, to the place/time where he had been healed. Moneta. She stood between Kassad and the multitudes, her skinsuit field shimmering about her waist but also wearing a soft jumpsuit which looked to be made of black velvet. A red scarf was tied around her neck. A rod-thin weapon was slung over her shoulder. Her gaze was fixed on Kassad. He weaved slightly, feeling the seriousness of his wounds beneath the skinsuit, but also seeing something in Moneta’s eyes which made him weak with surprise. She did not know him. Her face mirrored the surprise, wonder … awe? … which the rows of other faces showed. The valley was silent except for the occasional snap of pennant on pike or the low rustle of wind in the grass as Kassad gazed at Moneta and she stared back, Kassad looked over his shoulder. The Shrike stood immobile as a metal sculpture, ten meters away. Tall grass grew almost to its barbed and bladed knees. Behind the Shrike, across the head of the valley near where the dark band of elegant trees began, hordes of other Shrikes, legions of Shrikes, row upon row of Shrikes, stood gleaming scalpel-sharp in the low sunlight. Kassad recognized his Shrike, the Shrike, only because of its proximity and the presence of his own blood on the thing’s claws and carapace. The creature’s eyes pulsed crimson. “You are the one, aren’t you?” asked a soft voice behind him. Kassad whirled, feeling the vertigo assail him for an instant. Moneta had stopped only a few feet away. Her hair was as short as he remembered from their first meeting, her skin as soft-looking, her eyes as mysterious with their depths of brown-specked green. Kassad had the urge to lift his palm and gently touch her cheekbone, run a curled finger along the familiar curve of her lower lip. He did not. “You’re the one,” Moneta said again, and this time it was not a question. “The warrior I’ve prophesied to the people.” “You don’t know me, Moneta?” Several of Kassad’s wounds had cut close to bone, but none hurt as much as this moment. She shook her head, flipped her hair off her forehead with a painfully familiar movement. “Moneta. It means both ‘Daughter of Memory’ and ‘admonisher.’ That is a good name.” “It’s not yours?” She smiled. Kassad remembered that smile in the forest glen the first time they had made love. “No,” she said softly. “Not yet. I’ve just arrived here. My voyage and guardianship have not yet begun.” She told him her name. Kassad blinked, raised his hand, and set his palm along her cheek. “We were lovers,” he said. “We met on battlefields lost in memory. You were with me everywhere.” He looked around. “It all leads to this, doesn’t it.” “Yes,” said Moneta. Kassad turned to stare at the army of Shrikes across the valley. “Is this a war? A few thousand against a few thousand?” “A war,” said Moneta. “A few thousand against a few thousand on ten million worlds.” Kassad closed his eyes and nodded. The skinsuit served as sutures, field dressings, and ultramorph injector for him, but the pain and weakness from terrible wounds could not be kept at bay for much longer. “Ten million worlds,” he said and opened his eyes. “A final battle, then?” “Yes.” “And the winner claims the Tombs?” Moneta glanced at the valley. “The winner determines whether the Shrike already entombed there goes alone to pave the way for others … ” She nodded toward the army of Shrikes. “Or whether humankind has a say in our past and future.” “I don’t understand,” said Kassad, his voice tight, “but soldiers rarely understand the political situation.” He leaned forward, kissed the surprised Moneta, and removed her red scarf. “I love you,” he said as he tied the bit of cloth to the barrel of his assault rifle. Telltales showed that half his pulse charge and ammunition remained. Fedmahn Kassad strode forward five paces, turned his back on the Shrike, raised his arms to the people, still silent on the hillside, and shouted, “For liberty!” Three thousand voices cried back, “For liberty!” The roar did not end with the final word. Kassad turned, keeping the rifle and pennant high. The Shrike moved forward half a step, opened its stance, and unfolded fingerblades. Kassad shouted and attacked. Behind him, Moneta followed, weapon held high. Thousands followed. [3]

Conquistador in iron armor, Pursuing gaily my own star; I walk through precipice and canyon, And only rest in joyful lands.
The fog grows grim in starless skies. But I am silent and I wait; And I have faith — I’ll find my love. Conquistador in iron armor.
If stars can hear no sunlit words, I shall create my own bright dream; And charm it with the songs of battle.
A brother I to storm and chasm, But to my battle dress I add The star of fields — a fleur de lys.

444 - angels walk with you. Repel darkness... It's AMAZING.
Trigger Warning - April 2023, Flat Lined @ Burnaby General Hospital - What else is in store? I am almost certain, I can repel evil when I seek light. I can't, and won't regret tragic events anymore. Hotlines don't answer... But don't fear, this is part of high class corruption.
I don't support the use of illicit substances, and don't have a history of drug abuse, though accessed many drugs, and was fed Benzodiazepines at a young age - my mom wanted a friend to relax with? Lol.
  1. In the middle of April, I was admitted to the psych ward when my doctor denied me care, and didn't follow the psychiatrist's direction. He was prescribing me wrong medications at the time. This psychiatrist runs a private service, not covered by MSP. Spend thousands of dollars for a diagnosis. Long wait times deterred me from continuing to pursue waiting months, 3- 12 months. My dad called the police on me multiple times, while having my number blocked. I was arrested naked, and eventually tied up, and then treated by a nurse who was abusive - laughed at me, denied me water, made snide remarks, and used vulgar language - and refused to cover my naked areas while laughing at me (I can see your p), while I was tied up, which resulted in lack of circulation. She closed the curtains, while I begged for help. I had to submit, and was glad I was sedated, and have little recollection.
  2. This nurse then proceeded to direct 3 nurses, twice over, 6 needles, almost simultaneously, who injected me with strong sedatives - which interacted with the many drugs I was taking. I was labelled psychotic, which is usual, when you're treated with SSRI's, which is the usual, thoughtless protocol. SSRI's alone don't treat PTSD, or Bipolar 1 - actually contraindicated, and can result in Mania.
  3. I then went unconscious, and apparently flat lined. My roommate picked me up, and the Psychiatrist explained why I wasn't waking up. I woke up with poor circulation, and was still strapped down.
  4. They tested me for illict drugs, but didn't ask me what I had taken that day - no one spoke to me about my regular meds for Bipolar, and PTSD. I tested positive for multiple drugs, and they reported this to my GP, who then labelled me drug seeking, and requiring rehab.
  5. I then went unconscious, and apparently flat lined. My roommate picked me up. I woke up with poor circulation, and was still strapped down. My hands were sad to look at.
Upon viewing lab reports - multiple doctor's were listed, none which seemed to match the voice, or ethnicity of the doctor who supposedly treated me. I assume this emergency psychiatrist, who I never met, wanted to avoid being traced.
Street drugs lead me to God - won't be attending rehab. Lol.
Interesting scenario. Documenting my life - thanks for reading!

2023.05.24 19:10 Remote_Book Cheap places to eat near Warren Street?

I moved from Edinburgh and have a bad habit of eating out. I used to get lunch/dinner for 5-8 GBP there. This used to be a (huge) wrap/katsu curry/etc. Is there something here with similar price range? Something under 10 gbp would be good for long term as I don't like to cook much.
