2023.06.10 20:11 The_Real_Katakuri [Chatper 1086] Rested Review: Looking back

Ch. 1086 p1_2
The chapter starts with this color spread. Very colorful, very very clean. It's very readable. Every element, including water on the characters is easily understandable, the ground is beautiful and the puddles are even more beautiful. That's the good part.
I have three problems with the cover, though:
  1. Mugiwara pirates again and again and again. We've had some similar color spreads in the past and it gets to a point where they feel repeated, even if they aren't. I'm convinced most readers would prefer more different characters making it to the color covers.
  2. Franky's hairstyle. Because Franky wasn't horrible enough in last chapter's cover, Oda needed to find a new and even more silly hairstyle for Franky. I wonder if he's ever going to swallow his pride and go back to draw Franky either with his original hairstyle or the shaved style with which he came back after the time skip. Every single other hairstyle has been ridiculous and has only served to ridicule Franky.
  3. The perspective is completely messed up. The flowers in the top right part of the cover show peprfectly where the vanishing point is (in the middle of the image very close to the top). The vanishing point is the point where the camera is "looking" to, even if Oda likes to put it outside the image sometimes for artistic reasons. The thing is, every character on the ground (not Luffy), and most notably Nami, is drawn with very short legs as though Oda was trying to do a very high angle shot. And that doesn't make any sense accounting for the perspective of the background, but also because he's really only shortened their legs and not the rest of their body and it's very very weird. Look at Nami's legs and the umbrella. The umbrella isn't distorted but the legs are. That defeats the purpose of distorting the legs and it simply feels like she's a dwarf now.
In any case, the work on the reflections of every character in the puddles are awesome.
Ch. 1086 p3
Last chapter ended with Wapol escaping from Pangaea castle with Vivi (and Kinderella?), and this one begins and they have already successfully left Mariejoise. Igaram, Pell and Chaka are searching for king Cobra and Vivi.
It isn't clear at all when is this happening:
I find it very strange, regardless of time, that Igaram, Pell & Chaka haven't been dealt with by the nobles. It's not like they're hiding precisely. The way I see it, there are only 2 ways to proceed with them:
  1. Tell them "the king is here, please come" and kill them.
  2. Tell them about Cobra's death and frame Sabo as soon as possible in ortder to avoid suspicion.
If they aren't killed, and the nobles are not answering to their questions about the king either, anyone would connect the dots and imagine Cobra was murdered by the nobles.
Also, it's good that Igaram cares for Vivi, but what about caring a chapter or two earlier? What was more important for Igaram than protecting Vivi? What was he actually doing??
In fact, why was Vivi waiting for a Gondola to leave the Red Line when his father was just getting to a meeting with the Gorōsei??
Ch. 1086 p4
Wapol and Vivi are hiding in the Aegis' kingdom ship and arrange a way to go with Morgans. Good. That takes partial care of explaining how they ended up with Morgans. But the real question is how did left the Red Line? Did really no one go looking for them? It's ridiculous.
First the Revolutionaries show how anyone can infiltrate at Mariejoise and now multiple people show how anyone can escape as well. The humiliation is scandalous.
Wapol doesn't want to tell Vivi about Imu or his dead father because he's sure CP0 are trying to kill him. That doesn't make sense. If you're sure they're going to kill you you don't act in your future assassin's favor. If anything, trying to get as much attention as possible from the world is the way to go. It might fail, but there's a chance the attention could make Imu want to discredit Wapol rather than kill him and fuel the conspiracy theorists.
Ch. 1086 p5
With the recent announcement about Oda having eye surgery and him saying he couldn't see properly, it would be reasonable to consider how that could have affected his ability to draw.
Let me tell you the truth about two things:
  1. People with astigmatism don't become functionally blind until they have surgery correct their vision. They wear glasses and that's the end of it. Surgery will make Oda not need glasses, but that's all. The astigmatism wasn't preventing him from drawing at all.
  2. Look at the cover again. Oda can draw really well when he wants. Look now at this page. It's difficult to know whether it's king Stelly in the first panel or not because he's as much of a scribble as Sabo's picture, that might be a legit scribble.
Spandam, Gismonda ans some other agents are lookinig for Vivi and Sabo, but not the former CP9 members, who had Vivi in their custody and lost her. Also, where's Rob Lucci and what's he doing? Is he completely ignoring his duty as well?
Ch. 956 p9
So... Stelly was staring so hard at Vivi's poster that he didn't see Sabo's poster and couldn't listen to anything regarding the terrorist attack lead by his brother despite the whole Mariejoise was being searched for him. Interesting.
Ch. 1086 p6
The gorōsei pick up the ringing den den mushi. This is the only relevant thing happening in this whole page.
The narrator puts emphasis on Cobra's death and Vivi's disappearance but not on the clash between the Revolutionaries and the admirals. Why is that? It's to bolster the retcon'd timeline.
Ch. 925 p9 & 10_11
Remember that back in chapter 925, the highlight about the Reverie was the clash between the Revolutionary Army and the admirals. And it was said to happen during the 4th day of the Reverie. However, in this and the immediately previous chapters, events are happening during the 7th day (the last).
Another detail is that then the silhouettes indicated that the news included Sabo fighting the admirals, but during this recent flashback, Sabo didn't even met them.
Ch.. 956 p4
Then, in ch. 956 Garp explains that the incident with Cobra happens after the Reverie ended. That clearly separates the operation of the Revolutionary army (4th day) and Cobra's death (+7th day).
At the same time, Garp says that happened after they left, and that it was reported to him even later. And asks Neptune and his family not to fear humans because of it.
This and Shirahoshi's reaction make sense only if they had no better reasons to fear humans, like Shirahoshi being assaulted a second time by Charloss, and if Shirahoshi bid farewell to Vivi while everything was fine and now she's surprised to hear that.
But that's not what the recent flashback tells us.
Ch. 1086 p7
Contrary to last page, this one has mane things to consider.
Imu wants to "test" the "Mother Flame", a Vegapunk's invention, and the Saturn says they haven't had the chance to try it yet. Another gorōsei suggests a forest for the test but Imu wants "Lulucia" kingdom. The gorōsei show concern for the choice but at no point they question it.
We will see in the next page that they're talking about the weapon that destroyed Lulucia kingdom. And the first thing that calls for my attention is that the gorōsei look like complete amateurs here.
They've had a mass destruction weapon for "some" time, but haven't tested it yet. Can you imagine how many things could go wrong when trying new technology for the very first time? But don't be fooled, Imu doesn't want to "test" it. She wants to use it.
The gorōsei have been waiting with such a weapon in their power without testing it because...?? It's obvious that there must be a lot of places in the world were Imu, the gorōsei and the World Government in general should be perfectly fine with testing the Mother Flame, from certain uninhabited areas of the Red Line, to unaffiliated countries and from the top of my head, if anything else, Punk Hazard comes to mind. A government island they think is closed off because Akainu and Aokiji made it useless. It's the perfect place to test these kind of things. But they think they've had "no chance to try it yet". Sure.
In an attempt to defend Vegapunk from the undeniable increasing evidence of his evilness, I read some say the weapon is not "he Mother Flame" but "Uranus" and that the Mother Flame is only a power source.
That makes even less sense. First, because Imu clearly instructs to use the Mother Flame and not Uranus. And second because there's no way they can actually think they haven't had the chance to try a power source
Ch. 1086 p8_9
Imu answers about the reason to choose Lulucia and the five gorōsei are formally introduced. And three things stand out to me:
  1. They're named after planets of the solar system (other than the ones already used lol) and at the same time, they're not. There's Saturn and Mars, but there's also Ju Peter and V. Nasjūrō, who read like Jupiter and Venus + japanese traditional name ending. And lastly there's Valcury, who by elimination and obvious similarity should reference Mercury, but this one is clearly different. And I wonder if this is Oda wanting to name the gorōsei after planets and at the same time being obsessed with being unpredictable.
  2. With this names two middle names are introduced: "Ju" and "V.". So far, only "D." has been a thing. It was odd enough if you think about it, but the fact that now two more exist and that they do so in order to not write the name exactly like the planet feels quite odd to me as well.
  3. What is this "warrior god" thing? What does that even mean for them? I mean, I understand what "warrior god" means, but what's an "agriculture warrior god" or a "finance warrior god"??
Has Jupiter ever waged war in the name of agriculture or something like that? I get it, it's something meant to assign specific roles to each of them despite they have acted like a council for 1086 chapters, but wouldn't it make more sense to be "finance god" and "justice god" instead without the "warrior" part?
Also, do they really have any authority over their "department"? Last page showed they are nothing but the butlers of Imu. It's difficult to imagine they have agency.
To me, this looks like the upteenth attempt at hyping us for nothing. First, people living in Mariejoise were titled "World Nobles". Then they were rebranded as "Celestial Dragons". And recently they've been rebranded again as "Gods". And for no reason and without explanation. Just the narrator coming up with new ways to extol them. But at the end of the day, words are just that and so far, even the gorōsei have only prooved (this chapter too) to be very incompetent.
Now that I think about it...

Imu says Lulucia has been chosen for proximity alone. So, officially, both the fact that Sabo had gone there and that the country had rebelled aren't the reason. I wonder whether Imu's answer is just a way of saying the gorōsei to not even ask for explanations and just obey or actually a whimsical and very plot convenient occurrence.
The gorōsei note the convenience of being able to use the Mother Flame "freely" and I'm sure they're not talking about authorization, because Imu rules the world, but about the cost. Certainly the Mother Flame must consume a lot of energy. If only they had some scientist trying to develop a troll-science self´-sustaining power source, right?
Well, they got one but they're very heeadstrong in killing him, for some reason.
Ch. 1086 p10
We get to see the seraphim we hadn't yet seen. I don't think there's anything relevant in this page, but I've read some people arguing S-Croc could be a girl, you know, the old theory about Crocodile being originally a woman since Ivankov said he made Croc a huge favor, even though it could actually be anything else.
Personally I don't think S-Croc has particularly female traits in this image, but it's true that he has the same starry eyes as S-Snake, while S-Shark and S-Hawk do not (the others haven't shown their eyes). But if I had to guess, I'd put my money in Oda has decided to always have at least one gender-ambiguous character to troll the readers with left and right.
Ch. 1086 p11
Sabo telling more of what we already knew and saw.
Ch. 1086 p12
And this page is again, dedicated to justify the retcon'd timeline as though it was not.
Back in chapter 1060 (that's the beginning of this very arc, do you still remember what this is arc was about?), Sabo was at Lulucia when the annihilation happened.
Ch. 1060 p13, 14_15 & 16
We saw him as we were only seeing Lulucia and its citizens being shot by the Mother Flame and also the call ending abruptly immediately after the shot.
Now, Sabo says he was near, but not exactly there. And tries to explain the ending call saying it was an indirect call that was "rerouted" through another den den mushi on Lulucia.
First I wonder how do you do that from a ship? It's true that the specifics about how den den mushi are operated have never been told, but regardless, if this "rerouting" were a thing, surely it would have come in handy to many characters through the story before.
Also, since when can Marines (or any third party) locate den den mushi? They have been able to intercept communications and listen to them, but not guess where was any of the snails making the call. And even if they could, given he himself says it was not an encrypted den den mushi, hence being vulnerable to interception, why wouldn't they locate the original signal from Sabo just like the one at Lulucia?
Ch. 1086 p13
I don't remember Lulucia's name being romanized before, but it can be read in the ship's sail. It's written with a C (until another assistant thinks otherwise at least).
Sabo rules out living thing and natural disaster as the cause for Lulucia's annihilation and Ivankov pretty much implies Imu is someone from the void century who has lived this long because she's immortal thanks to the Ope Ope no mi.
Regarding Sabo's claim, I think we've seen all sorts of surreal things in One Piece to agree his assumption is very bold. A shadow in the sky is no indicator of no living thing or natural disaster. In fact we've seen shadows in the sky caused no more and no less by living beings and natural phenomena.
Ch. 299 p12_13
On his part, Ivankov's assumption is also quite bold. Does a name really reference one single instance of a living being? There can only have ever been one Imu? What about one Oars?
There's also plenty of people known for their outstanding longevity like Kureha. (Interesting that this made me think of her...)
It's true that Ivankov accounts for the name being not truly a reason next page, but the fact that he implies it with this force under an argument he knows is very weak... This is just Oda telling us "this is this way because a character is saying it" or trolling us for fun.
Ch. 1086 p14
Also, as I said last chapter, anyone can know of Imu and it was completely unreasonable of Imu not to tell Cobra about her, considering they were going to kill him no matter what and she said she was going to address his questions.
Could anyone else than Imu from 800 years ago be the one commanding the gorōsei? Why not? What kind of reasoning is that?
Next Ivankov makes his best guess of the day and claims Vegapunk must have created the Mother Flame (confirmed some pages ago by Imu). And it's now of all assumptions that Dragon intervenes to stop jumping to conclusions. Really??
"Vegapunk would never intentionally design a dedicated killing machine". What kind of joke is this?
  1. Kuma
  2. Mass-produced Pacifista model 1
  3. Mass-produced Pacifista model 2
  4. Mass-produced Pacifista model 3
  5. Seraphim
And after this and out of absolutely nowhere, they speak of ancient weapons. This page and the previous one is some of the most forced text I've seen in One Piece.
Ch. 1086 p15
For the final page of the chapter (yes, 15 pages only again, 2 of them cover), a new character makes his debut by sentencing to death Saint Donquixote Mjosgard.
He's named Saint Figarland Garling and is said to have been king of God Valley. Unlike everyone else, apparently, I'm not going to theorize about his relationship with Shanks, I want to talk to you about two other characters.
First, Dr. Kureha.
Ch. 154 p8
She looks just like she was Garling's twin sister. It's interesting, because a couple of pages back the matter of longevity was brought up and now we see a world noble said to have been king of a land outside Mariejoise and outside the Red Line. As we've been told in a number of occasions (last one being last chapter), only the Nefertari family were founders of the World Government who stayed at their homeland. This means if Garling was actually king of God Valley and not just a descendant of the last king, he's from the void century. Not as an hypothesis like with Imu, but confirmed. Thus, the simmilarities with Dr. Kureha aren't just physical. Both have incredible longevity and I think it was worth noting.
Last, I want to talk about Garling's predecessor: Crescent moon Gally.
https://preview.redd.it/pst3taqyc85b1.png?width=548&format=png&auto=webp&s=cd252883d36d4c0c3ae546f045bb46fead21c52e
He's the villain in the first version of the Romance Dawn oneshot that would later become One Piece. As you can see, The crescent moon motive in the hair is there just like with Garling (and the nose too). If you take the crescent moon out of the hat and apply it to the hair together with the beard, and change the mustache stretching to the sides for more hair to make it more exaggerated, you get Garling. Even the pose and facial expression is pretty much the one in this image.
Also, in his original name written in japanese, there's no indication of whether his name is "GaRling" or just "Galling".
And that would be... Oh! I almost forgot! Yeah... given Garling sentenced Mjosgard, where does this leave Saint Topman Valcury? Wasn't he the "Justice warrior god"? Why isn't he the one handing out justice? What other affairs regarding justice does he manage if not judging disputes among celestial dragons?

2023.06.10 20:09 Excellent_Iron9483 Ten things each USMLE student should do

Ten things each USMLE student should do

Ten things each USMLE student should do

(“You might feel like you know it all until you start getting into details! ”)
I completely understand how daunting it feels to prepare for the USMLEs — a mountain of information to learn, questions with confusing choices that make it difficult to pick the “best” answer, and on top of all that, a strict time limit!
I’m an Internal Medicine physician, an Assistant Professor at Brown University, USMLE STEP 2 CK tutor for Michigan State University, and an author of a USMLE STEP 2 CK textbook encompassing all topics for the boards (Thieme: A WIN series for USMLE available online and in bookstores). In addition to a decade of teaching experience, I scored in the 99th percentile on all the 3 USMLE STEP exams and am currently creating an online USMLE question bank.
I hope the following 10 pieces of advice will simplify your “road to residency”:
  1. Use the “IRIS” steps to master USMLE topics. Input- Reflect- Integrate- Share
  2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can ~The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get
  3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.
  4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.
  5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details.
  6. Pomodoro!
  7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.
  8. Get a USMLE-coach
  9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)
  10. “The shortest path”

1. Use the “IRIS” steps:

Input, Reflect, Integrate, and Share — in order to master the USMLE topics.
https://preview.redd.it/kcxcgtm0p75b1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeab3498231448f534cde68106c93db5d7006ee9
Reading a book (for example, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) but not reflecting on it and not integrating it into practice will result in the “illusion of learning.” Similarly, it is extremely crucial to practice IRIS to perfect your craft of USMLE preparedness.
Books serve as a great base camp for your knowledge ascents. Choose any USMLE book- a comprehensive book you can reflect upon — for annotation, highlights, and other important notes/personalized mnemonics.
  • For Step 1, there seems to be a consensus of a clear-cut winner being First Aid for Step 1.
  • For Step 2, go to your university library (online/virtual), scan a few of the most popular books, and find one that fits your style. Then stick to the “chosen one” for your learning journey.
Shameless ad: the textbook I authored (Thieme: A WIN book) is also a concise yet thorough book you may choose to utilize for Step 2 CK or Step 3. Check it out!

2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can.

The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get.

  • Finish all Uworld questions (tutored mode, chapter by chapter; learning one topic at a time improves clarity and efficiency).
  • Then finish the 2 Uworld sim forms, the free 120 NBME questions, and NBME practice exams (in the timed mode — to simulate real exam and to practice time management).
  • Also, try to finish as many Amboss questions as you can. If you finish Amboss too and have extra time and want to be a superstar student, you could even finish Kaplan Qbank along the way!
A suggested timeline for a 2-month USMLE Step 2 study schedule:
  • Complete the entire Step 2 CK UWorld in the first month (averaging around 80–100 questions per day). Focus on the learning objectives of each question and move on — you don’t need to memorize the entire explanation (example demonstrated below).
  • Then, for the next month, do an NBME self-assessment every week to assess your progress. Also, this month, focus on your NBME deficiencies (target your weaknesses, do not run away from them), and attempt to finish the Amboss Qbank.
Links: to NBME, UWORLD, and Amboss

3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.

Step 1: Start by reading the last sentence of the question — this will save some time and will help guide your attention to the specific thing that the question is asking.
How does this save time? With some questions, you don’t necessarily need to read the entire question to pick the correct answer.
For instance:

Which of the following medications will help with ureteral stone expulsion? The answer, in this case, is tamsulosin.
You don’t have to read the entire question stem to answer this question! Time can be saved for other harder questions you will encounter later in that block.
And, if you are doing practice questions from a Qbank, you don’t NEED to read the whole explanation. The goal of this question is to understand that alpha-1 blockers help with ureteral smooth muscle relaxation making it easier for the stone to pass. That’s all; just move on to the next question.
Another tip to save even more time: For really long question stems and lots of lab values, you could jump to the last two lines and scan the labs to note any specific abnormal lab values that might’ve been presented to help answer the question even faster. For example, a long clinical vignette that ultimately says “antiGBM antibody positive”: This line alone gives you the diagnosis of Goodpasture’s syndrome, so you can proceed to answer the question.
Step 2: If the last line (or scanning the labs) isn’t enough, you must read the whole question.
The most efficient way to answer the majority of questions is to follow these steps:
  1. Read the question stem and highlight the pertinent findings.
  2. Make the diagnosis.
  3. Choose the answer based on your diagnosis.
Some students tend to fall into the trap of reading the question stem and then trying to reason through each of the answers before committing to a diagnosis, which is inefficient, as it leads to many back-and-forths.
To reach the diagnosis, focus on your highlighted portions of the question stem. Those are the puzzle pieces that you need to connect to figure out the diagnosis.
For instance:
  • Hoarse voice + weight gain + 1+reflexes in all extremities + proximal muscle weakness = Hypothyroidism
  • Hirsutism + easy bruising + proximal muscle weakness = Cushing syndrome
(As a last step, ask yourself whether all the puzzle pieces fit into the diagnosis you have in mind. To double-check, consider whether your diagnosis fits the patient’s age, chief complaint, and course or severity of the disease. If not, you probably don’t have the right diagnosis and need to re-think it).

4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.

But how you may ask. Let me break this down even further for you.
To answer USMLE questions correctly, you need to master the art of making the right diagnosis — an art that can be learned by clustering different conditions with similar features and then recognizing the features that set them apart.

https://preview.redd.it/fild67zdq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=a16058a9c5ded78f1fd3701a825c993df155da69
Example:

HOW TO APPROACH IMMUNODEFICIENCY QUESTIONS?

https://preview.redd.it/2zddp8a5e85b1.png?width=1584&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a01601bd5fbe9cefc5a5fc88b3dcea74e6f1bc
Further practice: Click on the following links to practice a few questions dedicated to learning of clustering and differentiating method:
Remember, no matter how prepared you are, you will always feel uncertain about some questions, and that’s okay. Just use your best judgment, flag it, and move on. Chances are that you might have a fresh perspective on the question when you come back to it later.

5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details

Memorizing various pieces of medical information (for example, differentiating features of diseases, management steps, cut-off values, etc.) is key for acing an exam. Use memory-retaining techniques and tools, such as associations, mnemonics, the popular flashcard app ANKI, etc.
Example:
New onset ascites generally require diagnostic paracentesis. The two most important things you look for in ascitic fluid are SAAG and neutrophil count.
  • SAAG (serum ascites albumin gradient) = serum albumin concentration — (minus) albumin concentration in ascitic fluid
  • What is the cut-off of SAAG? 1.1.
  • How to remember? SAAG: “AA”= “1” and “1” because “A” is the 1st alphabet. So, the important SAAG value is 1.1. Elevated SAAG (>1.1) is elevated portal pressure.

https://preview.redd.it/emo0d5zjq75b1.png?width=1382&format=png&auto=webp&s=b87580625183237422dc705f08b5c3e0868bc203
Don’t build buildings without foundations. Don’t use rote memorization. Use (or even better, create your own) memory associations/mnemonics whenever possible.
* Ascitic neutrophil count of ≥ 250/mm3 is diagnostic of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.
Example 2:
How to tackle questions of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia?

https://preview.redd.it/9q58a3plq75b1.png?width=1628&format=png&auto=webp&s=62de1716c6d57cd8baeaf64ecc020f58640a6108
Here is a link to a practice question on Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (to integrate what you learned).

Here is a link to information on one of the students’ favorite tools: Anki cards. This is particularly helpful for step 1. I also advise students to make their own Anki flashcards (based on UW incorrect, cross-referencing your chosen book as you make the cards). This reflective and integrative act of making cards is one of the best ways to retain information.

6. Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique

The most important strategy for productivity is the Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique; Do 25 minutes of USMLE-focused study prep time (with no distractions like your cell phone or TV), followed by 5 mins break. Then, refresh and repeat. (Some students prefer 50 mins study time and 10 mins breaks.)
Pomodoro breaks your work(study) time into portions and gives some rest time for the brain to come back much more refreshed. This provides the much-needed reset to your productivity decline after 25 to 50 mins of study (improving overall efficiency and preventing burnout). I have seen some students working on their computers during this 5 min break. This isn’t RAM refreshment. (Get up from that chair, go out of that room, and de-strain your eyes and your body posture!)
Here is a link to a great Chrome extension for this. It also measures your total study time.

7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.

If you start following these 10 pieces of advice from the beginning of shelf exams, by the time you take your USMLE Step 2, you will have mastered all its topics (and you may need a quick refresher, that’s it!).
Example:
During your 3rd year, use the IRIS steps: do UWorld questions subject by subject and take NBME clinical mastery for Shelf Exams.
Processing one subspeciality (chapter) at a time also improves clarity and efficiency — a lean-learning principle as opposed to batch processing. Isn’t shelf preparation automatic portioning?
Note: A 1–2-month time frame for USMLE preparation doesn’t typically give you enough time to follow ALL the IRIS steps. Also, during this time, a common example of batch processing occurs where students generate a practice-question block choosing all the system topics in UWorld instead of honing in and tackling one topic at a time.

8. Get a USMLE coach

All athletes have coaches; why don’t we?
You can get online USMLE tutoring/mentoring or seek a well-qualified USMLE tutor through your university.
There is no shame in asking an expert for help to improve any areas of weakness. When I go on my snowboarding trips, I always seek a few snowboarding lessons to accelerate my learning process.
Another shameless ad — I tutor on the Wyzant online platform. Here is a link to a $40 OFF for your first class.
I also do free weekly 1-hr Zoom sessions (Wednesday at 6 pm EST) on “how to get better at tackling USMLE questions” that anybody can participate in— here is the link.
Has there ever been any Olympic athlete who won a gold medal without the help of a coach?

9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)

Take proper care of your physical and mental health -Since I love mnemonics, here’s another one! SEE well to do USMLE well: Sleep, Eat, and Exercise:
  • Sleep: at least 7–8 hours every day to recharge your body at night (Don’t partially charge your phone overnight only to run out of battery by noon)
  • Eat healthy foods
  • Exercise regularly

10. Always take the shortest path

There might be an infinite number of ways to go from point A to point B, but there is only one shortest path.
Finding the shortest path frees up some time to do other activities in our limited number of hours in a given day. So try to maximize efficiency.
Perhaps, the shortest path to achieving high scores on USMLE is to start following these 10 pieces of advice NOW !!
I hope this short thread on “how to learn!!” will help you on your road to residency!

Appendix:

Exam question schema: — In some USMLE questions, the question creators add a detail that tries to derail you through a red herring. Examples: “A family history of a neurological disorder in a case that sounds like chronic tuberculous meningitis,” “a recent camping trip history in a case that appears to be Neisseria meningitis,” “ a malignant head tumor that was noticed after head trauma” etc.
So in most USMLE questions, — you need the following schematic understanding:

2023.06.10 20:04 decomposingdiva New aggression in puppy

We got a rescue puppy with questionable parentage. I really suspect his daddy has a Texan Heeler in his background. We've had him about a month and we're using a house lead to train. We have been for about 2 weeks. He's 4 months old. Nipping and jumping are issues, but he's starting to bite in retaliation if he's prevented from doing those things. The little dude is brilliant and I know he wants to be a good boy. Any advice is appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

2023.06.10 20:02 a-noether I might have the possibility to move to Japan and I'm not sure how to make the decision.

Hi. Probably I should mention I'm a guy of 30 years old.
So, at my current FAANG workplace in Europe they've informed me that our Japanese counterparts are hiring for multiple positions. One of them is for BI team (basically coding). My workplace asked me if I want to go for that one. Initially I said yes because I thought it'd be a great opportunity. The position comes with a promotion as well.
I have now to do the interviews/panels relatively soon, and I honestly think chances are that they will choose me if I don't mess it up, since compared to other candidates that will be proposed I have somewhat of an advantage (more experience, more past projects to show, background education). Of course it is not a given, but I think it is a possibility. Now the closer I am to the panels, the more I think if this is really something I want to do. I am unsure because of the following:
  1. I would be going alone. I have visited (alone) Japan in the past and while I loved it, I think living there alone would be a complete different experience. I don't know Japanese and while I'd try to learn it, I think it would make it very difficult for me the first year or so.
  2. Work culture. Yes, the company is American and you can already tell how the environment is a bit different here compared to other local companies, so I guess it carries some sort of culture, but I can't help being afraid of working overtime and some other caveats like taking holidays. Work/life balance is one of the most important things to me, as well as taking holidays and travelling the world. If it turns out I cannot have that in Japan I would probably feel miserable, so the only hope here is that the culture in that workplace is different from local Japanese companies.
  3. I'm not a serious person. Currently at my job I fortunately have the freedom of not being a serious person since what really matters is getting the job done. I can joke around with the managers, we can wear just whatever we want and we just get along quite well after all. Overtime is extremely rare if at all. I value that sort of environment, very laid back. I think I'd have a difficult time if it was the opposite (overtime, being serious all the time, clothing code)
  4. Life in Japan. I am generally a very open minded person and knowing how their culture can be a bit closed up, it worries me that I won't fit well in the society or that it isolates me in very impractical ways.
I'm not a career oriented person, I just want to work enough to get money so I can live life, so while this might be a great opportunity career-wise, I'm completely unsure on how should I go about it. I either have to do my best or let it go (I don't like half assing things).
I have a girlfriend but we are long distance now. The plan was that she'd come where I am currently in about 1 to 2 years from now. In any case, we would not like to live in Japan long term, the plan was always here or somewhere else in Europe. Then again, that's in 1 to 2 years from now and in the meanwhile I could get some experience outside, maybe.
How would you take a decision like this? I'm having a difficult time with this and it's been bugging me for a while now.

The fine flavor of these Orange Bitters is derived from the skins of oranges grown in the West Indies. Try it to add a bitter citrus background to a variety of cocktails or sparkling water.
https://www.feebrothers.com/bitters
Cost: $10 for 5 fl oz. 17.50% Alchol.
Bottle & Color: Paper wrapped glass bottle with a dasher top and a plastic screw on lid. Bitters are lightly yellow in color.
Smell: Orange Candy……
Taste on back of hand: shockingly sweet, only lightly bitter, no spice. All I get, and once I thought it is the old McDonalds orange soda from my childhood.
Taste 4 dashes in 4 oz Soda Water: Orange soda, wish there was more.
In a cocktail: I made a Bijou, a good old classic.
1 oz Fords gin
1 oz Sweet vermouth
1 oz Green Chartreuse
2 dashes Fee Bros West Indies Orange Bitters
They did there job here, the orange was definitely present and tasted less artificial in the cocktail. With the Chartreuse adding so much complexity the bitters contributed what they were suppose to.
Final Thoughts: Half the price of most other bitters, these are fine. Not complex, but a few dashes definitely bring the orange. Probably better used in cocktails that are already fairly complex on their own.

2023.06.10 19:59 SageParadoxFGC Ersatz Zodiac I: Amy

Base Art: A woman in her early thirties with dark brown hair sits at her desk in the middle of a white room. She pores over piles of paperwork, her glasses framing the stern, austere expression on her face and matching the pristine Hana Association uniform she wears. Beside her lie a pair of scales, the weights perfectly even.
Uptied Art: The same woman stands in a dark alleyway. Absentmindedly, a jagged black spear of the standard Hana make cleaves through the head of a fleeing victim. A kinder fate than the subject of her attention, a pitiful figure who is being hoisted by the neck with one hand whilst their head is forced to face the glare of Hana's Inquisitor. In the background, blood forms the shape of an uneven scale on the wall behind them.
Base Stats:
154 Max HP, 3-6 Speed, 35 Defence. Resistances: Slash (Ineffective), Piercing (Fatal), Blunt(Normal).
Skills:
When clashing, Amy has her spear out to the side and behind her. She wins clashes through upward and downward sweeps of her weapon, and loses them with it crossed over her body as she grimaces.
Skill One: Celestial Spear (Gloom)
Attack Type: Piercing. Skill Power: 3. No. of Coins: 1. Coin Power: +8. Offense Level: 32. Growth: 0.7.
  1. On Hit: Inflict 3 Rupture. Heads Hit: Reuse this Coin.
Amy lances forward with her spear. If she triggers the Heads Hit effect, she then rips the spear upward and out of the target.
Skill Two: Unyielding Strike (Envy)
Attack Type: Blunt. Skill Power: 5 No. of Coins: 3. Coin Power: +3. Offense Level: 32. Growth: 0.7.
  1. Inflict 1 Scrutinized next turn.
  2. On Hit: Inflict 2 Rupture.
  3. On Hit: Inflict 2 Rupture. Heads Hit: Inflict +1 Rupture Count.
Amy thrusts her unarmed fist forward, jagged black energy radiating from it and knocking the target back. She then sweeps her blade from side to side twice across her body.
Skill Three: Castigate (Pride)
Attack Type: Blunt. Skill Power: 4 No. of Coins: 4. Coin Power: +2. Offense Level: 32. Growth: 0.7.
  1. On Hit: Inflict 1 Rupture.
  2. On Hit: Inflict 1 Rupture.
  3. On Hit: Inflict 1 Rupture.
  4. If target is Scrutinized, this coin triggers Rupture twice. On Hit: Reduce all Rupture to 0.
Amy swings a doublehanded overhead blow with her spear. She then grabs the target with her off-hand, choking them, and then runs them through with her forehand. Finally, her leg blackened by Hana's technologies, she kicks the target off of her spear.
Skill Four: Evade
Attack Type: - Skill Power: 4. No. of Coins: 1. Coin Power: 10. Offense Level: 34. Growth: 0.63.
(Scrutinized is an effect that increases the damage of Rupture by 50%. It ticks down every turn.)
Passives:
Thorough Audit(x5 Pride Owned): If an opponent with Rupture loses a Clash, inflict 1 Defence Level Down.
Hana For All(x4 Pride Owned): The ally with the highest SP inflicts +1 Rupture Count.
EGO:
Scales of Themis(Pride, Awakening):
Attack Type: Blunt. Skill Power: 12. No. of Coins: 1. Coin Power: 15. Offense Level: 32. Growth: 0.7.
  1. Heads Hit: Apply 9 Rupture. On Hit: Apply 3 Rupture.
Cost: 3x Pride, 2x Wrath
A picture of Amy lying down on a bed, torn books strewn around her and her arm over her anguished face flashes before shattering. Amy then bangs a black gavel upon a wooden desk, before pointing the gavel at the target. "Guilty, guilty, guilty... always the same verdict." A shadow appears over the target, before the shot pans out to reveal a gigantic pair of scales, with one of the weights hanging over the target. The scale tips, and the target is crushed.
EGO Passive:
Themistopóloi: When an ally attack triggers Rupture, self-apply 1 Attack Up next turn. If no allied attacks trigger Rupture, self-apply 1 Fragile for each ally remaining.
Dialogue:
Acquisition: Hello, this is the Hana Association's Western Branch. I'm Amy, Director of Section 2. How can I help you?
Morning Greeting: I've always been a bit of an early bird. Are you the same?
Afternoon Greeting: A quiet lunch sorting my paperwork is a personal joy.
Evening Greeting: We should finish work, get some sleep, and come back refreshed in the morning. It is poor form to enter work fatigued - or, heavens forbid, tardy.
Chatter #1: Make sure to read the manuals provided to you and properly follow the procedures provided. I would hate to have to... reprimand you.
Chatter #2: Do you think a corrupt, selfish individual can truly serve any purpose in a civilised society? No, I thought not.
Chatter #3: No, there's no such rule. I would kn- oh, that was a joke? My apologies. No, I'm not humourless. You're just not funny.
Post-Uptie Chat #1: You know, it's a little unsettling, to have someone who understands. I wouldn't change it, though.
Post-Uptie Chat #2: Sometimes, I wonder whether this idea of good I have is real. But then I look up at the night sky, and it tells me that my path is just.
Idle: Is there something you wanted? My patience isn't unlimited, you know.
Uptying: Perhaps... I can trust you. Please, work with me to find a better outcome.
Deployment: This is Section 2's Director, Amy. Let's get this done.
Stage Entry: Haaah... We should prevail.
Viewed In Battle: I assume there is a reason you are checking in on me?
Commencing Attack: Very well.
Enemy Stagger: Thus always to the unjust.
Staggered: Ggh!
Enemy Killed: An unfortunate necessity.
Ally Death: You'll... be commemorated. I'm sorry.
Check Passed: Yes, just as protocol suggested.
Check Failed: Damn. My mistake. I was clearly not up to the task.
Victory Cry: It's only fair.
Extra Conditions Fulfilled: My contributions to this endeavour cannot be denied. Perhaps now my Section will stop cracking jokes behind my back.
Defeat Wail: Is justice... really just a word?

2023.06.10 19:57 klgommers06 Questioning demiromantic? Anyone wanna help?

So i def consider myself to be aro-spec given ive only experienced romantic attraction once, i guess 3-4 years ago. But im wondering if i may be demiromantic specifically.
So i guess 5-ish years ago, i met a boy online. And after some time of playing the game where we met each other, we decided we could start chatting. I liked talking to him and it felt somewhat special to me as i never felt drawn to someone before. Im also on the aplatonic spectrum so yeah. Background story: i was mistreated as a kid and he told me hed help me or that i could share my struggles with him etc. This made me feel safe and it created a bond. Soon he became quite important to me and i was sometimes sad he didnt find me his #1 person. So kind of sad he had a gf. But im not sure if it was romantic attraction already. Given i can only recall having obvious romantic fantasies later on (even tho i experienced them in a very aegoromantic way), after several months maybe. Before that, you could say they were quite ambiguous? But, i guess back then i already labeled this possible alterous attraction as romantic cuz heteronormativity. My attraction towards him lasted pretty long and none else caught my romantic attraction ever.
But idk if this alterous attraction was actually the early develop of the crush or if the crush was genuinly developed later on. Has anyone experienced the same maybe? Thanks for reading.

2023.06.10 19:57 Matt_Oliveira .y overall Thoughts on season 3

Now that the show is seemingly over, here are my thoughts on season 3. Let's start with the negatives first and finish on a positive note
What I hated:
1.) A scene in episode 3x10. At some point toward the end of that episode they make a sly comparison between Roy and Rupert which felt weird. Roy is not at all like Rupert
2.) Every trope and cliche they managed to avoid the previous two seasons, they, for some reason, went all in on this season. Back to back to back to back. Examples-
Roy and Keeley breaking up, unnecessary. Why can't we have a nice, cute, organic relationship that isn't riddled with FUCKING DRAMA?!?! And top it all off, they don't even get back together in the end. I mean, WHAT THE FUCK?!?!
Michelle dating the therapist, unnecessary. Season 1 did such a good job of not vilifying her character inspite of her initiating the divorce. They should've let the story stay amicable. I feel like her dating the therapist undoes all of that, especially since it's quite possible that he was the one that could've manipulated her into divorcing Ted so he could slide in.
3.) Unnecessary characters-
Jack was an Unnecessary storyline that should've never happened
Shandy was annoying and served no purpose at all
Zava at the very least had some funny moments but even he felt redundant and useless
Edwin Akufo was ok in season 2 but he didn't need to come back
4.) Keely's character felt very seperated this season-
Keeley was always the glue for all the major characters and even though she had scenes with them, it felt more separated this season. she still felt isolated from everyone. I don't know why, but it just felt different
What I Enjoyed:
1.) Roy and Jamie's friendship-
This was easily one of my favorite parts of this season. Their friendship this season was both hysterical and endearing. What a huge difference in their relationship in comparison to season 1.
2.) Sam and Simi-
I liked their dynamic together. Wish they had time to build on it more
3.) Collins Story-
Very well done story and I like the friendship with Trent that came of it. Glad he got his happy ending.
4.) Trent integrating with Ted and the team-
I liked Trent's journey with Ted these past 3 seasons. Season 1 he begrudgingly takes a liking to Ted. Season 2 is when we see the mutual respect from both men truly grow. Season 3 he integrates with the team and a true friendships starts between him and Ted.
5.) Ted and Beard's backstory-
This was cool to see because it adds context to their friendship and it gives Beard some character development. Beard is kind of a background character most of the time, in that he doesn't really speak much, so I'm glad they gave the character some depth with this story
6.) Nate and Jade-
I really like Jade. She brings outer a softer side to Nate when we've become so accustomed to his douchebag side.
7.) Jamie's relationship with his mom-
It was nice seeing his mom after all his references toward her the past two seasons. I really liked the close relationship that they had.
What I would've liked to have seen but I'm not upset about:
1.) More Sassy and Nora-
Sassy is a fun character and it'd be cool if she was a more regular character rather than having a guest appearances once or twice in a season
Nora was a nice addition in season 2 and I liked the relationship between her and Rebecca. That dynamic would've nice to build more
2.) More Dr. Sharon Fieldstone-
I wish she was a apart of the main cast
Overall Thoughts:
This season had a bit of a rough start but definitely picked up later on and had a ,mostly, satisfying ending. I'm gonna miss this show

2023.06.10 19:53 denieltonn Devo processar a empresa onde trabalho atualmente? (Trabalho sem CLT, horas extras não pagas e desvio de função).

Fala pessoal, tudo bem?

2023.06.10 19:49 Accomplished-Ad1822 What Schools Should I try for?

Hi guys im going to be applying this cycle and wanted some advice on schools to focus on and which ones to avoid. I'm okay with applying to schools with a low chance but probably cant do every single one because that's a lot of essays lol.
Background: IP Alberta, completed 4 years, MCAT: Writing August
GPA by school: UofC/Ualberta: wGPA 3.94, OMSAS cumulative: 3.84, Sask: 92.5%, UBC: 89%,
Western: 3.89
ECS: Blood bank: 1.5 years in high school (100-150 hours), Co-foundevolunteer at a food bank: 3 years, Hospital volunteering 2.5 years (110 hours), Physio assistant volunteer 3 years (Ongoing 500+ hours), Rehab for older people with disabilities (50-100 hours), two practicums (children with autism and rehab), part-time cook for 3 years, exec at two clubs 3 years (hopefully starting one this year), play competitive soccer (not pro/varsity) for 10+ years
research: 2 publications in the works but unsure when they'll be out.
I'm not the best at writing and it'll take me a while with a lot of help so I appreciate any insight on which schools to avoid based on stats/which ones I could still have a chance at OOP. TIA

Play ground Sim, it’s a blast, cas is fair, battles are historical, gameplay is way more grounded. If you can’t take the time to “learn” a game mode that has everything you want in it then you have no right to complain, ground sim is such an overlooked game mode and more people should play it, whenever I play it, I feel like I’m actually getting a real, good Warthunder experience

2023.06.10 19:42 dramyay What is Multifaceted Auditory Distraction Training (MADT)

Multifaceted Auditory Distraction Training (MADT) is A comprehensive training approach that involves listening to audio content containing multiple overlapping voices or sounds while focusing on a specific target voice. This training method aims to enhance the ability to discern and comprehend a desired voice amidst complex auditory environments.

Benefits:

  1. Selective Listening: MADT enables individuals to develop the skill of selectively attending to a specific voice or sound source within a crowded audio environment. By practicing this technique, individuals can enhance their ability to filter out irrelevant information and focus on the desired auditory stimuli.

  1. Enhanced Voice Recognition: By repeatedly exposing oneself to audio clips with overlapping voices, MADT trains the mind to differentiate and recognize specific voices more effectively. This can be particularly beneficial in situations where it is necessary to identify and understand a particular speaker in a group setting or amid background noise.

  1. Improved Listening Comprehension: Engaging in MADT exercises challenges the auditory system to process and comprehend complex audio inputs. This can result in enhanced listening comprehension skills, enabling individuals to extract meaning and understand spoken content more accurately, even in situations with multiple speakers.

  1. Cognitive Flexibility: MADT promotes cognitive flexibility by requiring individuals to actively switch attention between different voices or sounds. This cognitive demand helps train the brain to be more adaptable and agile in processing auditory information, leading to improved overall cognitive function.

  1. Effective Communication Skills: By honing the ability to listen to and understand specific voices within a cacophony of sounds, MADT can enhance one's communication skills. This can be valuable in various settings, such as business meetings, social gatherings, or public speaking engagements, where clear comprehension and effective communication are essential.

  1. Versatile Training Applications: MADT can be applied to a wide range of scenarios beyond voice recognition, such as music production, language learning, or audio transcription. This versatility allows individuals to customize their training sessions based on their specific goals and interests.

  1. Personalized Learning Experience: MADT can be tailored to individual preferences and needs. By selecting audio clips that align with personal interests or professional requirements, individuals can make their training sessions more engaging and relevant. Additionally, practicing MADT can be done using headphones or speakers, making it accessible and convenient for different environments.

In summary, Multifaceted Auditory Distraction Training (MADT) offers a comprehensive approach to improving selective listening, voice recognition, listening comprehension, cognitive flexibility, communication skills, and more. By engaging in this training method, individuals can develop the ability to focus on and understand specific voices or sounds within complex auditory environments, opening up new possibilities for effective communication and enhanced auditory perception.

2023.06.10 19:38 Currencymachine Food?

I’m on day 5, and I’m starving.
A little background: I got 4 wisdom teeth removed with PRF, and I’ve had no pain/swelling the entire recovery. I only took ibuprofen the day of my surgery as a precaution, but didn’t need to take it since.
I want to try some real food today. Yesterday I had ramen, and I was completely fine, but today I want to try butter chicken with naan. Do you think it’s safe? My dentist told me that I could irrigate on day 7 after my post-op appointment.

2023.06.10 19:34 masterofpiss Analysis of The Game Cube

Analysis of The Game Cube
Image 1: okay another dark episode, and let me guess a happy ending to it?
Image 2: okay, a glitch? SOUND THE ALARM, THE EPISODE IS BEING INFLUENCED.
Image 3:mario party? Interesting
Image 4: If Miyamoto trapped them in why would he have bowser do that
Image 5: more mario party, noted
Images 6 and 7: if it was a backdrop why have smg4 looking around confused, well I guess the twist at the end gives this some sense
Image 8: what an odd background panel, is that something green behind it? Perhaps it's wiring
Image 9: wait a godamn minute, I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE.
Image 10: okay smg4, THERE IS NO EXPLAINING THAT.
Image 11: okay this twist makes SOME sense, however I'm not sheving the theory possibilities from here due to the glitch and game 5 of 4 death.
If it wasn't obvious enough already these dark episodes with happy endings are happening WAY too often. Making us theorists on the sub awfully suspicious of them.

2023.06.10 19:33 caffeineslave95 Half-Truths

Starting with background information, my sister has already signed over rights to her oldest child and I'm starting to worry she may do this with her youngest as well. According to her, her son's father got pulled over and arrested with him in the vehicle. She wouldn't tell us what kind of drugs, but that he also got charged with child endangerment. She said that her son's paternal grandmother now has him and that Department of Child Services said she can't have him until she gives a clean UA on Monday. She refuses to answer my questions that I think you guys can help me answer. 1: Why can't she have her kid? She has primary custody. 2: Why does she have to pass a UA? Unless the court ordered it? But why would they? 3: Her excuse of not having him yet is because it's the weekend. Wouldn't they still take her in for a UA on a Saturday? 4: What can I do? I would like to get emergency custody of him if I can. But how fo I go about all that? Thank you all for your time!

2023.06.10 19:32 55thMP Chances of being hired

Thanks in advance.
I am an engineer who got laid off because the company was closing end of this year.
I applied to many jobs and got an offer from an engineering firm.
I knew they wanted me because despite 50-60 people applying on Indeed(it shows how many people applied) and other applicants from other websites, the company contacted me and wanted to get an interview ASAP. The Phone interview took about 30 mins and the face-to-face interview took 1hr and 30mins approx with the manager and the president. I had all the qualifications and they also liked my military experiences with many awards. They were impressed by my interviews and finally got an offer.
The problem is I have DUIs.
I have one 6 and half years ago and other one last year. I am on probation right now. I did all the requirement, just needs to go to probation meeting every two months.
I'm from IN where a second DUI within 7yr is a felony 6 (lowest felony). but can be sentenced to a misdemeanor once I finish my probation without any violation.
I know I fucked up bad. I really do want to get hired and waiting for them to do background check.
Currently, I have been sober since the arrest and active member of AA (4 times a week and not court required). Since the company is an engineering firm, it has about 30-40 employees altogether. Most of the employees there are my alma maters too. Are they going to rescind the offer? I am willing to talk to them if asked.
