2023.06.10 04:51 awa54 Some listening notes as I get acquainted with my new Saga+

The lead-up:
So far I'm finding the bypass mode to be the "best" for my tastes, for a number of reasons ...many will disagree with this opinion, but they don't have my ears, my musical preferences, my exact hardware setup, or my listening room.
I prefer neutral systems and like the sound of my sources enough that I don't want to alter them in any way.
I'm offering my perspective, because lots of "I like" and "best sound" verbiage has been tossed around in regard to the sound of this component, all of which is irrefutable (since it's opinion), but not something that we will all agree on and frequently pretty vague, so I'm going to make an attempt at being a bit more descriptive, it's probably not going to be a revelation for anyone, but I'll try anyway.
This post is covering use with only two tubes and it's based on just a couple of days ownership and a handful of listening sessions, I'll update the thread as my impressions become more informed/opinionated and when I have more tubes to review (they're coming).
*
The system:
All electronics are on a Target welded steel rack, the top shelf is accurately leveled for TT use.

Rega Planar 2 with 3x large IsoBearings replacing the original hard rubber feet
AT-120E MM cartridge (aligned using Mo-Fi Geo Disc system, 1.8g tracking force, anti-skate adjusted using inner groove method)
AQ Wildcat to phono preamp 1.5m

Parasound P/PH-100 phono preamp
AQ Diamondback to Saga+ .5m

Cambridge Audio Azur 851N streameDAC
Media supplied via ethernet cable through a local network hub (1GB), from Serviio software on a dedicated Win 11 mini computer, all data is stored on 1TB 2.5" SSD (not a system volume)
AQ Viper to Saga+ .5m

Schiit Saga+
AQ Viper to amp 1.5m

Adcom GFA-5400
AQ Gibraltar to speakers, single bi-wire configuration, spade lugs at all positions 8ft.

PSB Stratus Gold i, upgraded with doubled AQ Type 4 cable run from crossover to woofer and individual runs of AQ CV-4 from crossover to midrange and tweeter
Speakers sit on 4x hockey pucks each
*
Music sources include CD rips made with Exact Audio Copy at 16bit/44kHz in FLAC format, as well as downloaded FLAC files in 16 or 24 bit depth, 44, 48 and 96kHz. The one record I played was a 12" LP promotional maxi-single, this was definitely not made from a 2nd (or higher) generation stamper as it was distributed in very limited numbers, it also has some big bass, which is the other reason it was chosen.
Formats were electronica, rock, folk, jazz and ambient, instrumental and vocal music (both male and female vocal). No classical music was harmed in the making of this review.
*
The listening:

My take on the stock tube (an anonymous Soviet era 6H8C unit that looks identical to some Sovtek branded units available from retailers as NOS and billed as 6SN7GTs (though some sources claim they're GTB spec), is that it's absolutely awful fresh out of the box ...but had improved to the point where it's moderately competent after running several hours and got even a bit better running over night.
The good is that it isn't at all noisy (this preamp is quieter than many solid state units, when in buffer mode), has OK image depth and localization, doesn't gloss, soften or harmonize over the music overtly and runs very cool.
The bad may be things that a lower end systems or poor source material might not event reveal, but there *is* quite a bit to criticize, as it collapses the sound stage width by about 20% and depth by 30% (referenced to bypass/passive operation), it also has a sort of soft halo or circle of confusion that surrounds all the voices and instruments making them larger than in bypass, as well as adding a noticeable "wooliness" to them. On top of that transient attack is softened and decay is largely lost in the soft haze... for reference, this is a pretty nit-picky criticism, and the "haze" is hard to describe, since it isn't an audible noise floor ...it's kind of like; if the bypass mode has empty black space surrounding all the instruments, then the tube has a soft charcoal gray as the backdrop. It actually sounds like a slight compression effect. Last and in my opinion, most unforgiveable, is that it softens and slightly inflates bass (only emphasizing maybe 50 to 150Hz, which masks overtones and reduces perceived detail?), while suppressing true sub-bass (my speakers have useable output below 25Hz and the room reinforcement takes that even lower, so I hear this effect clearly on a lot of tracks).
*
The other tube is a 1940s(?) National Union 6SN7GT, with black "silvering" inside the upper portion of the envelope. It's used, but has *perfect* triode balance and gm measures at more than 100% of new spec. This tube sounded similar to the supplied tube (*after* that one had broken in!) when cold, and stopped audibly "improving" after about two hours of use. It runs somewhat hotter than the tube Schitt supplied, but still nothing like higher power output tubes.
This tube shares in small part all of the failings of the other, but only in *very* small doses, maybe 20% or less as noticeable as with the 6H8C. It also has an *ever so slight* euphonic sweetness, but it's not overt the way that many tube gain stages are. I expect that some systems might not resolve the differences between the bypass and buffer modes with this tube in place, losing both the good and bad properties in their own lower resolution and tonal coloration (effectively rendering the tube buffer transparent). The sub-bass deficit and less than black background still bother me, but are both much less objectionable than in the 6H8C. The NUs sonic signature, subtle as it is, is even useful in taming the sound of some bad recordings, since the ever so faint reduction in resolution and softer, sweeter presentation counter a portion of the harshness. Some listeners will undoubtedly feel that this makes the tube "better" than bypass.
*
Phono listening gave the same results as digital media, but didn't reveal the sub-bass issue (since there usually isn't any on an LP), the slight bass lift and softening was heard though.
*
Now some comments on the passive/bypass mode: it's virtually indistinguishable from a direct connection to the Cambridge streamer: detail, stage width/depth, image placement, tonal balance, all fully intact as well as dynamics and the amazing slam and drive that this component delivers (which it does without any compromise to the subtlety of the music). An A/B/X with matched levels might reveal *something*, but turning off, cable swapping, then powering up again between listening, leaves me with the feeling that all I did was swap remotes, not add or remove a component from the chain.
*
I have a theory about the sub-bass effect when in the tube buffer mode: it's that the Saga+ effectively reduces the output impedance of the Cambridge unit (despite being created to *improve* that parameter), which in turn compromises the bass drive... The streamer has a fairly beastly 46ohm output impedance, while Saga+ is 180ohms (really very respectable). It's not like my cables are reactive, or the Adcom is a tough load to drive, but I think it may be just enough to have caused the suppressed sub-bass output.
*
That's all for now.

2023.06.10 01:59 Zee113 HELP WITHBAKING SKATES 🄺

first off. let me start by saying i never played a day of in-line hockey in my life lol. just went to the local Dicks to try and see what skates they had. just to see if i’m into it. i am aware Dicks isn’t the greatest but i wanted to not spend a million dollars and then not be into it lol. so i just grabbed a pair of Tour CODE 9.one skates. the size length wise is good. but i feel like the outside of my left foot is killing me. like rubbing on the inside of the skate. can i bake them to make them more comfortable? or am i talking nonsense ? sorry if this seems like such a simple question. like i said. never played roller hockey a day in my life lol

2023.06.10 01:56 cain-xci Skating/Hockey/Shinny in HRM

I'm new to the area and had a question for the locals. First of all, let me say that I'm super appreciative of some of the skating rinks in the area being open during the summer, I'm not used to that at all and it's honestly really nice to be able to skate all year since skating/hockey is one of my favourite pastimes.
I am wondering something though, it might take a bit to explain. In BC where I moved from, some of the rinks would block off about a third of the ice during family skates, and they would set up a couple of nets and have some plastic and foam pucks (and some little plastic hockey sticks) available for people who wanted to do some casual shinny-ish activities or somesuch.
Some rinks would also have what they called Stick & Puck, where you could drop in and do some solo or small group hockey practice with real pucks (helmets and gloves mandatory, full equipment recommended).
My question is, do any of the rinks in the HRM do anything like either of these? I've been unable to find information so far but if any of them do the blocking off the ice thing I'd be really keen to take part in that since I really enjoy being able to skate and do some solo hockey practice. I'd also be keen to do some Stick & Puck if the former isn't available.
Thanks in advance, I honestly love it here so far and I'm really hoping if I can't find something like these I can at least find something adjacent.

Lore:
In the late 19th century, during the unsettling era of the Industrial Revolution, a small farming community nestled deep within the heartland of a forgotten country thrived under the care of a diligent and compassionate farmer named Jonathan Blackwood. As the crops flourished, so did the hopes and dreams of the townsfolk who relied on the bountiful harvest to sustain their humble lives.
Jonathan possessed an uncanny talent for tending to the land, seemingly blessed by nature itself. With his expertise, the fields yielded more than ever before, and the villagers marveled at the abundance of food that spilled forth from the earth. The sight of the flourishing crops enchanted the townsfolk, and their admiration for Jonathan soon transformed into something akin to worship.
However, as the seasons passed, the prosperity that once enveloped the farming community began to wane. The crops withered, livestock perished, and a sense of despair hung heavily in the air. Blighted by a mysterious blight that defied explanation, the town faced an imminent threat of famine.
Desperate to save his beloved community, Jonathan turned to the forbidden arts of the occult. Rumors whispered of his nocturnal excursions to ancient burial grounds, where he sought guidance from the spirits of the departed. Driven by his love for the people who depended on him, Jonathan was willing to do whatever it took to restore the land's fertility and safeguard their futures.
It was during one fateful moonlit night that Jonathan stumbled upon a hidden chamber within an ancient burial mound. Within its depths lay an ornate lantern, its ethereal glow pulsating with a sinister energy. Overwhelmed by a mixture of awe and trepidation, Jonathan cautiously reached out and touched the lantern, and as his fingers brushed against its surface, an unholy pact was forged.
The spirit that inhabited the lantern, a malevolent entity known as Mirage, sought vengeance for its own tragic demise centuries earlier. Empowered by the farmer's desperation, it offered Jonathan a twisted bargain. In exchange for the spirit's guidance and the restoration of the land, Jonathan would become the vessel through which the spirit would unleash its wrath upon the world.
Blinded by his desire to save his community, Jonathan accepted the wicked pact. In that moment, Mirage's essence seeped into his very being, transforming him into a grotesque amalgamation of man and spirit. The once kind-hearted farmer was reborn as The Scarecrow, a twisted figure shrouded in tattered garments and adorned with straw-stuffed limbs, his hollow eyes burning with otherworldly fury.
With the newfound powers granted by Mirage, The Scarecrow returned to his dying community. As he roamed the moonlit fields, the eerie glow of the lantern he now wielded cast long, haunting shadows across the barren landscape. The presence of The Scarecrow alone brought terror to the hearts of the townsfolk, as they realized that their beloved farmer had been irrevocably changed by dark forces.
No longer bound by the limitations of mortal flesh, The Scarecrow's malevolence manifested through the powers of the lantern. As he stalked his prey, the lantern's glow intensified, and an oppressive mist engulfed the surroundings. Within this ethereal fog, the Hunted found their senses dulled, their movements slowed, and their chances of survival diminished.
The Scarecrow reveled in the torment of his victims, deriving sadistic pleasure from their despair. The once benevolent farmer had become an embodiment of fear, a being who lurked within the mist, harvesting the souls of those unfortunate enough to cross his path. Altan's life was forever changed when she became an unwitting pawn, kidnapped by a ruthless faction as leverage in their political machinations.

The ruthless faction saw her as a means to exert control, a bargaining chip to manipulate their enemies. Her spirit shattered by the cruelty of her captors, Altan yearned for freedom and the reunion with her loved ones, but the fog of war veiled her hopes in darkness.
Days turned into nights, and nights into weeks, as Altan's captivity persisted. In the depths of her despair, she discovered a sliver of solace in the haunting whispers of the wind. One fateful day, a group of young adults arrived at the mountain resort, seeking a memorable getaway. Little did they know, their presence would become a horrifying chapter in the Prowler's dark tale. Among them were Kris, Kayley, Olivia, Kyler, Jamison, Ethan, Emma, Kara, and Anthony, each unaware of the imminent danger that awaited them.

Lore:
In the shadows of the 1970s, when crime and corruption permeated the streets, John Carlson emerged as a seasoned detective with a reputation for his tenacity and resourcefulness. Born and raised in a city plagued by lawlessness, John had a front-row seat to the injustices that unfolded daily. Determined to restore order and bring criminals to justice, he dedicated himself to his work, earning the respect of both his colleagues and the community he served.
John possessed an uncanny ability to uncover the truth, seeing beyond the faƧade and deciphering the intricate web of lies spun by criminals. His sharp mind and keen instincts made him a formidable adversary to those who sought to evade justice. However, as John delved deeper into the dark underbelly of the city, he unwittingly stumbled upon a secret society that thrived in the shadows—a clandestine organization known as Fog Whisperers.
Fueled by greed and power, Fog Whisperers operated with impunity, pulling the strings behind the scenes, orchestrating crime waves and manipulating key figures within the city. They saw John as a threat, a disruptor who posed a risk to their carefully constructed empire. In a calculated move to eliminate him, they devised a sinister plan.
One fateful night, as John tirelessly pursued a high-profile case, he received an anonymous tip leading him to an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city. Unbeknownst to him, the tip was a carefully orchestrated trap. As he ventured deeper into the derelict building, he found himself ambushed by a group of masked assailants, agents of the Fog.
A vicious struggle ensued, but John was outnumbered and overwhelmed. Despite his valiant efforts, he was overpowered, beaten within an inch of his life. The assailants, believing they had dealt the detective a fatal blow, left him for dead, disappearing into the night.
However, fate had other plans for John. As his lifeblood seeped from his battered body, he was enveloped by an otherworldly mist, a manifestation of the very darkness he had fought against. In his darkest hour, the fog claimed him, granting him an unexpected second chance at life—but forever tethered to the fog and its twisted realm.
Now one with the fog, John emerged as a hunted survivor, trapped within the nightmarish trials orchestrated by the Fog. His skills as a detective proved invaluable in his quest for survival, enabling him to outsmart and evade the relentless hunters that pursued him. Yet, the line between self-preservation and selflessness became blurred for John. His desire to survive often clashed with his moral compass, as he would not hesitate to use his companions as distractions, ensuring his own escape.
While seen by some as a helpful survivor, John's reputation was marred by his self-serving tendencies. With every trial, he walked a precarious tightrope, balancing survival and the instinct to alert the hunter for his own benefit. His conflicted nature, a blend of resourcefulness and self-interest, painted him as a complex figure among the survivors, one whose actions could be both admired and criticized.
As John ventured deeper into the trials, he was haunted by the shadows of his past, the echoes of the crime-ridden city he had once fought to protect. In the fog's merciless embrace, he sought redemption, an opportunity to atone for the compromises he had made. The path ahead was treacherous, but John Carlson, the detective of old, remained determined to survive, to unravel the mysteries of the fog, and perhaps, find a way to free himself from its unforgiving grasp.

Kris Hackley had always been the embodiment of determination and leadership. As the captain of her local hockey team, she commanded respect and pushed her teammates to their limits. Yet, beneath her strong exterior, Kris harbored a simmering discontent towards those she perceived as unworthy or unfamiliar. It was this disdain that brought her to the fateful trip to the mountain, seeking an escape from the confines of her team and the pressure of her responsibilities. The day started with a hockey game, where Kris once again led her team to victory. But instead of relishing in the triumph, she found herself growing increasingly irritated with her teammates' shortcomings and mistakes. Seeking solace from the persistent frustration, Kris agreed to join her friends—Emma, Ethan, Anthony, Kyler, Kara, and her siblings Jamison and Kayley—for a weekend getaway in the serene mountain retreat. However, tensions began to rise as Anthony introduced a newcomer to the group—Olivia. Kris immediately resented the intrusion, perceiving Olivia as an unwelcome disruption to their tightly-knit circle. Her feelings of superiority and territoriality cast a shadow over the trip, as Kris became increasingly distant and hostile towards Olivia. As the group ventured further into the secluded mountain, their bonds began to strain under the weight of Kris's disdain. Unbeknownst to them, the dark presence of the fog had already begun to weave its way into their lives. It sensed Kris's isolation and resentment, drawing her closer to its clutches. Tragedy struck when Kris, consumed by her own emotions, failed to extend a helping hand to those in need. As they engaged in risky activities, disaster struck one by one. Kris watched in horror as Emma, Ethan, and Anthony succumbed to their fates—severing the already fragile bonds of friendship. Jamison and Kayley, her own siblings, suffered the consequences of her indifference. Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, Kris found herself separated from the remaining survivors—Olivia and Kyler. Alone in the unforgiving mountain terrain, the fog began to envelop her, offering a haunting embrace that echoed her internal turmoil. In that moment, Kris's fate intertwined with the fog, becoming one with its ethereal realm. Now, as a Hunted survivor, Kris roams the trials, forever trapped within the fog's grasp. Her once fierce determination transformed into a relentless struggle for survival, and her perceived superiority challenged by the enigmatic horrors that lurk in the shadows. The lessons learned from her past failures now guide her, as she navigates the trials with a newfound sense of humility and empathy. Accompanied by his friends—Emma, Ethan, Olivia, Kris, Kayley, Jamison, Kara, and Anthony—they embarked on a journey filled with laughter and camaraderie. The mountain resort promised an escape from the constraints of the mundane world, offering a playground for their youthful spirits. Little did they know that their escapade would lead them to the unforgiving clutches of the fog. As they explored the resort's scenic trails and indulged in adrenaline-fueled activities, Kyler reveled in the freedom of the mountains. The majestic peaks seemed to call to him, urging him to push his boundaries even further. However, their joyous excursion took a dark turn when an ominous presence loomed over their group, watching their every move. Tragedy struck swiftly, as Emma, Ethan, Kris, Jamison, and Kara fell victim to the unknown malevolence that pervaded the mountain. Their lives were cut short, leaving Kyler, Olivia, and Anthony as the sole survivors of the harrowing ordeal. The weight of loss and survival weighed heavily upon Kyler's shoulders, his carefree spirit burdened by guilt and grief. It was on their journey back to civilization that the fog made its insidious move. Trapped in a dense mist that seemed to devour the world around them, Kyler found himself separated from his companions. Panic and confusion washed over him as he desperately searched for an escape, but the fog had claimed him, pulling him deeper into its eerie realm. Now condemned to wander the trials as one of the Hunted, Kyler fights to preserve the memories of his lost friends and find solace in their spirits. The fog taunts him, a constant reminder of the past he cannot change and the choices that led him to this haunting existence. His once carefree nature has morphed into a resilient determination, fueled by the desire to honor the memories of his fallen comrades and seek a way back to the world he once knew. In the trials of the Fog, Kyler's courage is put to the test, his survival dependent on his ability to adapt, cooperate, and outmaneuver the relentless Hunter. Among them were the determined Kris, the gentle Kayley, the steadfast Kyler, the empathetic Anthony, and the spirited duo of Ethan and Emma. Despite her reservations, Anthony chose to invite his friend Olivia, much to Kara's discontent. Her desire to maintain a close-knit circle was fueled by an underlying fear of losing control. Within the group, Kara clashed with Kris, a natural leader whose presence threatened Kara's own desire for dominance. She held an unspoken disdain for Kayley, who had a deep connection with Jamison, Kara's secret love interest. The weight of unrequited affection burdened her heart, and only Anthony, her confidant, shared her pain and understood her longing. As they ventured into the heart of the mountain resort, the group encountered unspeakable horrors. Emma's tragic demise shattered Kara's world, traumatizing her to the core. The harrowing scene would forever haunt her memories, igniting a primal fear and unraveling the fragile threads of her composure. In the midst of chaos, Kara's selfishness and desperation propelled her into the forest, seeking refuge from the horrors that unfolded. But fate had other plans in store. As the agonizing hours slipped away, Kara's desperate pleas were answered by an unexpected force. The fog, sensing her turmoil and her broken spirit, reached out to claim her as its own. It enveloped her in its ethereal embrace, forever sealing her fate within its enigmatic realm. Lost to her friends and the world she once knew, Kara became a reflection of her own inner turmoil—a haunting reminder of the consequences of selfishness and the yearning for control. He has never fired a gun in any of his investigations. He owns a pistol, but his prowess is questionable, and when he uses it, it is exclusively as a throwing weapon.
His favorite weapon is the nunchaku. Having mastered kung fu, he started using nunchaku under the influence of Bruce Reichi, a skill difficult for an average martial artist. However, he put on a sly face and said, "This is easier to use than a pistol. I'll just use this instead." He plays dumb but is a lot stronger than he looks.

When he was a boy, he dreamed of becoming a dancer, but he was a delinquent in his neighborhood. His dancing talent was certainly the best in the street, and there was no one who could surpass him. Why did the boy choose the path of a martial artist?
"At that time, I was so frustrated that I couldn't sleep at night. That kid, Terry, made a fool out of me."
After that, he followed Terry to every fighting tournament. "My life has gone crazy because of him. By this time, I was changing the world's club scene. Terry is a big star who can't be called out. ā€
He believes that they'll be even after he beats Terry.

Kim Kaphwan, a man who is said to be undefeated for 10 years in the taekwondo world. One of the primary reasons why he has risen to this level is his passion for taekwondo. He believes that it is the strongest martial art in the world. What does taekwondo mean to him?
"I fight to prove the strength of taekwondo. I hope it will give confidence to the people and country I love."
He spoke eloquently to convey his feelings for his loved ones. Taekwondo is said to be more popular than karate. However, due to the small number of onstage practitioners, it gives the reverse impression. It's not strange that his fight is the dream of his native people.

"I did a street fight that was forbidden by Master Tung. Moreover, I played match-fixing and lost on purpose. At that time, Tung was furious." At the time, he used Hakkyokuseiken, so his betting odds were biased against him. So he got a second party to bet on him, and he played the match beautifully.

ā€œJeff Bogard was the role model for a martial artist. That's why I chose him as my successor. I didn't expect that to happen... ā€

2023.06.09 16:31 ChiefofPickles Father texts me before important things to get into my head

I almost feel like he does it to be nice(sometimes) or he thinks he’s being useful but really fucking me in the head.
Like before interviews, he’ll get pissy or be a dick about something, or he will say it’s this or that. So then I get annoyed and out of the zone I need to be in for that interview.
Last night he sent a long text because I had a hockey weekend and hadn’t skated for a bit, yet, I played fine last night despite hurting my wrist and you know us, we can handle it. He said oh your heart would this and muscles this and brain this and shit.
But I didn’t do it because I ended up letting him get to my head and think I couldn’t, getting my team pissed at me, which I get it. I do)
The thing is? I was fine to play. I could’ve handled it. But I let him live rent free in my fucking head.
Anybody else?!

Yzerman, Shannahan, and Federov on the same line...just think on that and let it sink in.
Hasek, Robitaille, and Hull all hoisting this cup in 2002, was magically one of the best teams to ever skate in the NHL, I remember the news coming in before the season, I was absolutely floored when I heard that we have traded for Hasek. I made it to the parade that year, man what a party.
What I appreciated about 2008 was how long the Pens fans waited, they stayed for a long time after the game. Pretty respectful in my opinion. Can't say that for every sport.
I don't care what it takes, I will be there for the next one, I don't care if I have to sell a kidney on the black market to afford the tickets. I would like to see them lift the cup just once in my lifetime in person.

2023.06.09 13:57 nawme First pair of inline speed skates

My 11 year old has joined our local speed skating team and is searching for his first pair of speed skates. The team really pushes Bont. I checked their size chart and measured his feet. According to the charts he’s at the end of a 6.5. As a mom, I want to size up to the 7. Is that a good idea? We’re still learning how ā€œrealā€ skates are supposed to fit and feel.
I’m also open to any ideas, suggestions, skate recommendations, etc. He’s been skating for a few years but is super excited to take it to the next level.
Thanks!

2023.06.09 03:08 erichschwer13 Burlington Outdoor Rink

Burlington Outdoor Rink
How do we get Burlington to create an outdoor rink that most cities in the northeast have? All the community rinks are packed all winter long. So many people love to skate. What an awesome winter attraction it would be to put something down by the waterfront. I wish they did this where ā€œthe frameā€ went up. However, just down the bike path there is a pad that is currently covered in spray paint and has skate board ramps. Right next to a brand new skate park…. You make a permanent board setup and it would also allow for roller hockey leagues in the summer… who do I have to talk to?

2023.06.08 22:23 GoldWhale Which NHL Draft prospects have the most upside? Corey Pronman ranks the top 36

  1. Michkov
All right I know I have to explain this one as you all sharpen your pitchforks. Michkov may be the best draft eligible I’ve ever seen from inside the offensive blue line, or at least in the mix. His skill plus offensive sense combination is incredible. He sees the game at a different level and is a scoring-chance machine once he gets the puck inside the opponent’s zone. The lack of speed and size are notable hindrances in his pro projection — both are worse than Connor Bedard’s and he doesn’t have Bedard’s motor — but he’s a unique player and has the potential to put up massive amounts of offense as a pro if he hits, which isn’t a sure thing.
  1. Bedard
Narrowly trailing Michkov is the presumptive No. 1 pick in Bedard. Bedard is projected to become a top-scoring NHL forward. He has game-breaking skill and goal-scoring ability, and could potentially be a regular for 35 to 40 goals in the NHL. There is true superstar upside in his game with fewer risk variables in his skill set than someone like Michkov, due to his superior speed and compete.
  1. Fantilli
You could argue any of the top three ranked players here for best upside in the draft and I would think it’s reasonable. Fantilli, like Bedard and Michkov, has incredible skill. He may be a notch or two below both in terms of pure offensive abilities, but he’s much bigger and stronger than either and faster than Michkov. His physical toolkit is the most prototypical of the three prospects of an NHL star.
  1. Leo Carlsson
When a player is a 6-foot-3 forward with game-breaking skill and offensive instincts, it’s easy to envision a path for them to become a star. Carlsson made so many unique plays with the puck this season in one of the best leagues in the world. He’s so talented, and while his skating could use some work, he has the potential to put up big scoring numbers for a long time.
  1. Will Smith
Smith has a lot of tools to make you believe he could be an impactful NHL player. The scouts who really believe in him see the type of skill that David Pastrnak has. I’m not all the way there, but he has game some game-breaking moments with his hands and vision, especially at the pace where he can make plays. He’s an exciting player full of potential and has a star quality to him.

2023.06.08 20:52 whitehouses Does anyone else deal with jerks in skate shops?

I'm lucky to live in an area that has a lot of skating shops so sharpening, heat molding, mounting, stretching, punch outs, etc. are all accessible without traveling more than 15 miles in any direction.
But it seems like no matter where I go there are always men working who 1. just care about hockey and 2. don't take me seriously when I ask for something.
I went in earlier today to get my skates sharpened and my boots stretched. I know exactly what I want and need. There's nothing up for discussion. He kept questioning me about my boots, skill level, what I know about my blades, and my boots.
I understand if I came in as a total beginner and was looking for something and had no idea what I wanted. However, I was very clear that I know what works for me, what has always worked for me, and is what my coach also believes works best for me.
IDK I just struggle with a lot of men in these stores who are maybe used to hockey players and don't take figure skaters seriously. I always leave feeling so stupid even though I asked for exactly what I need. It's the skepticism that makes me feel stupid.
Again I feel lucky to live in a place with many options but at this point it's happened at three different shops.
I understand that there are probably figure skaters who ask for the 'wrong' thing and are unhappy with the result but with my level of boots + blades I feel like I should be taken seriously. A couple questions to reaffirm what I want and then boom done.
I just hate the feeling of going into a store and getting intimidated by men who think that I'm dumb and don't know what I need. I'm a grown woman for God's sake.
I'm curious if anyone has experienced this and if it's something that is common? Or are my skate shops just run by jerks in my city? Haha. I live in an area where both figure skating and hockey are huge sports for kids and adults alike.

I know what i doing in terms of skating and the knowledge around it as i've done that research, but its getting used to the wheels and the thickness of them etc.

2023.06.08 11:38 htclong Just need somewhere to vent my impulsive disappointment lol

I got myself rollerskates, just because i felt like it was time to live my childhood dream. Cool got it... Then what. I have crippling social anxiety, and im afraid of people looking at me/talking to me/or even harassing me. Especially harassing, because i always see random hooligans walking in the evening.
If not this, then motivation is beyond the chart, somewhere there. Its non existent to be honest, then i wonder why my impulsive spontaneous ass got them in the first place. Just like everything else i have.
Then as summer has begun, its frikin horrific hot outside. Best is to go out very early morning, or late in the evening. Can't wake up in a morning properly just for this... xd Evening is scary as i said, im afraid to be randomly harrased by alcoholic dudes or even worse.
Then it rains non stop, for few days, or a week straight because of the heatwave.
Last but not least, I don't really have where to practice after all...? Kind of realised too late. Probably thought im gonna be an ace and stride like a pro everywhere immediately. Roads are ass, and its illegal to skate on a road regardless. They are bumpy, uneven, with holes(tried at night few times, where there are barely any cars driving). Sidewalks are bricked, so kind of uncomfortable for a beginner to even start skating on those (maybe if only i was expert in this lol), and there is nothing else... no place to skate at all. No playgrounds, no courts of some sort, fkin nothing. There are bicycle paths, but would have to walk quiet some time to get there in a first place.
So, I'm just kind of bummed right now, because i really wanted to do it. I tried few times late evening with my husband as a support and help, but of course he doesn't wanna come all the time, he has his own stuff to do, and allergies are kicking his ass at the moment.
Ehh basically, just a sad vent xd ...
Edit.:
I DID IT. I READ ALL YOUR COMMENTS. I WANTED TO GO OUT TODAY EVENING, BUT THEN I STARTED TO BACK AWAY AGAIN BEING AFRAID. BUT THEN I WENT HERE, READ ALL YOUR COMMENTS AND I JUST STOOD UP AND SAID ENOUGH. YOU GET YOUR GODDAMN GEAR NOW AND JUST GO. GOOO. And i went, and it was great. I said i was afraid of bricked sidewalk, hell naw, i just went on it and i dont care, it was difficult for first few back and forth times, but then apparently its actually doable. And when i went on a road for a bit(when it was darker and no cars), apparently road feels fantastic compared to sidewalk. It was my 3rd time by now, and i actually can skate apparently, i didn't fall, i rocked abit but managed to come back to my balance. I was going back and forth, longer distances then, doing bubbles, trying to turn, went faster and faster, and its just great. LOVE IT, the more i do it the better it gets. I goddamn did it, i stfu my anxiety and just went out. Boy im proud and happy and sweaty and overheating xD

2023.06.08 02:23 ngobbler Blade switch advice

I’m looking into doing a blade change really soon, so I’m doing as much research as possible. At this current moment, asking for my coaches help isn’t possible (and asking other coaches is out of the question) and the nearest skate fitter is a 5 hour drive.
I’ve been skating for 5 years, on and off as of recent. Im 20 and 5’9, I’m trying to have a cleaner lutz, and land a consistent axle, with hopes to work on a few doubles soon.
im currently in edea ice fly’s and matrix legacy’s. I’ve been in ice fly’s for 3 years, even though I might actually switch to concertos soon (very long story) I’m also looking into different blades, even though my matrix legacy’s are almost brand new. It’s because of lack of people who can sharpen them in my area. There used to be a coach that did them very well, but due to some issues we have together he is no longer sharpening my skates.
I’m trying to find a blade that’s similar to the legacy, without the blade holder jig. I’ve tried legacy 8’s but I’m honestly looking for something new. I’m wondering if the MK pros or the JW ace share any similarities? And if they’re suited for the kind of jumps / spins I’m working on. And if any of them have a feature that is better then the other?
The only adjustment I’m worried about is the rocker change. Going from 8ā€ to 7ā€ can’t be easy at all.. But I think it’s something I might try or at least consider.
Any input helps!
