Divest Reviews The Great War: Western Front

2023.04.02 06:47 AllBritsArePedos Divest Reviews The Great War: Western Front

I didn't have very high expectations for this game when it was first announced, WWI games have a pretty low bar to meet for me. Your typical WWI game falls into 3 categories.
  1. 1 A low quality reskin of a WWII game, typically very unbalanced or incredibly boring and stripped of content depending on how realistic they try to make it. Think of something like that WWI Squad game where they can't even fill up a server or how Battlefield 1 filled out its weapon roster with a bunch of shitty experimental guns with a handful of them having the best video game stats making them meta choices, there's also numerous mods for games like Hearts of Iron, Company of Heroes, Day of Infamy and Men of War that just make them worse to play.
  2. A total conversion mod for a game originally designed for something before WWI, Napoleon Total War is the best example of this but there's also that mod for Holdfast, Mount and Blade Warband, other total wars like Warhammer and Shogun 2 and games like Rise of Nations or Civilizations where they already have WWI units available, just requiring a scenario for them.
  3. A game where WWI is just used as a setting and it doesn't really have anything to do with how WWI was fought, like Valiant Hearts or Victoria 3.
TGW exceeded my expectations because it is a purpose built real time strategy game set in WWI and it felt unique to the war that was fought. Unlike a shitty WWI game which is about taking WWII and stripping out your options and making the game less unique TGW was built from the ground up for WWI to give you more options than you would get from a normal strategy game.
In a typical strategy game campaign such as Total War or Company of Heroes 3 you're expected to win battles decisively and go on the Offensive constantly, Defensive battles are just a thing that you sometimes have to do. but in TGW you can win on the offensive or the defensive as long as you're dealing more damage than you're taking and eroding the enemy's national will.
On the tactical level the core of the gameplay is about coordinating hordes of infantry in conjunction with their supporting elements mainly artillery to grab and hold ground, if infantry is caught out in the open unsupported they get massacred very quickly by rifle and machine gun fire but they have to move out in the open if they're on the offensive so the attacker uses artillery to suppress the enemy and soften them up for the infantry assault. Infantry is also controlled in entire companies of 225 men like in a Total War game. There's also things the defender needs to consider like having multiple lines of trenches so that they can have a reserve force to defend if the attackers make a breakthrough and both players have a limited amount of supplies at their disposal, serving as a currency to call in units, construct your defenses and supply ammunition for your artillery so you can't just constantly spam artillery.
Also the game does a good job of forcing you to use all the tools in your arsenal, you can't minmax and just only recruit one type of infantry because the infantry corps are assigned to you and you need all the manpower you can get to match the enemy force, so even if you would rather have regular infantry instead of conscripts tough shit, all you have is conscripts.
Now onto the bad parts of this game, and there are a lot of them.
I can't give you any commentary about all the other stuff you're supposed to have access to in this game like raider companies, tanks, airplanes, gas, flamethrowers, aircraft and siege artillery because I couldn't unlock them in my first campaign before I won the war, in fact I got nowhere near unlocking anything interesting because of the game's faulty research system.
The tech tree requires 240 points to max out with 40 points invested into each branch and you only get 1 point per turn, there are supposed to be events where you get bonus points throughout the campaign but unless they give you 30 at a time there's no way to make up for the fact you're not getting nearly enough research done.
I noticed a bunch of other faults with the tech tree, like if you start your campaign (central powers) in May of 1916 you have 37 research points with 35 invested and 2 free wheras when you start in December of 1914 you have 5 points with 2 invested and 3 free, meaning that you would have presumably gotten 32 points over 17 months which is closer to 2 every turn rather than one. Still though the latest piece of technology in this game is the A7V which was in production in September of 1917 so you should really be getting closer to 7 research a turn if you wanted to keep it historically accurate.
In the current system you couldn't even really max out a single branch unless you invested all of your research into it and so it encourages you into upgrading tried and true conventional weapons over experimenting with oddball designs. I think technology needs a complete overhaul. What I would like is to have a technology timeline where you can see when certain technologies will be unlocked depending on when the Entente and Central Powers introduced them and then the Research Points system could be recycled to focus exclusively on unlocking different passive buffs like increasing the amount of gold you earn every turn or the efficiency of different buildings.
I wonder if the problems with the AI not adapting to repeat strategies is simply the fact it's impossible for them to adapt with how gimped the tech tree is actually.
Another major gameplay flaw i noticed was the movement of infantry in trenches, the trenches are seemingly single file paths which makes sense but the AI likes to get stuck if you order multiple units at once, or worse they will jump out of the trench which can lead to you losing a unit if there are unsuppressed enemies around the trench that can shoot them. Also if you have infantry and enemy infantry moving in a trench together they don't get into combat instead they just get stuck on each other or walk past each other. which looks stupid.
It would also be nice to have some sort of indicator for unit firing ranges so that you can see where infantry can shoot from a trench or where machine guns can fire, especially enemy units when you want to stage infantry as close as possible without coming under fire for a planned assault.
Another sort of gameplay issue I have is the asymmetrical balance for the Entente and the Central Powers. This game was made in conjunction with the UK government through the Publicly owned Imperial War Museum so the gameplay is balanced with a twing of British propaganda throughout. part of that is the nationality system for the Entente where every Entente nationality gets a different bonus made up basically wholecloth. Most of these bonuses are so negligible that you would not notice them, things like the Brits having a bonus to their rifle accuracy of like 10%.
But then the French get a 40% discount on the cost of all infantry which is relatively huge especially when you consider the fact France makes up the majority of the Entente forces. The Central Power Bonus is that they get access to low quality Conscript infantry which are cheaper but less effective than standard infantry, so basically the same thing as France except with downsides.
Also these Conscript Corps are replacing regular corps you would otherwise have on the campaign map, the Entente starts with 54 Corps and the Central Powers 53. The downside of playing as the Entente is the minuscule 5% morale penalty for stacking troops of different nationalities on the same territory, but this only affects if you mix American, British or French troops together, if you have Belgians with the French it's okay and if you have Colonials with the Brits it's okay, so you're really just getting a slight straight upgrade over the Central Powers.
If you analyze this design choice from a historical perspective the French should also get colonial troops, the US should get black troops and the Central Powers should get troops from the various constitutent armies that made up their force like the Bavarians, Saxons and Württembergers, maybe even the Austrians too. Compared to the Canadians who get 4 corps in the campaign but only mustered one the Bavarians had six, any argument against this is faulty since they already opened the can of worms with the Brits. Based on their own gameplay mechanics a Canadian and an Australian is just a British guy with a different accent and flag, so it works just as well for the Central Powers who all speak the same language.
Anyways I'm probably forgetting something but I just wanted to hammer this out quickly since I just finished my first campaign. You can make fun of me for playing on recruit if you want but I was just learning to play the game, now i'm doing the Entente on Trainee.

A college in upheaval: War on 'woke' sparks fear in Florida

By JOCELYN GECKER
SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — Professors at the New College of Florida are using personal email because they’re afraid of being subpoenaed.
Students are concerned, too. Some fear for their physical safety. Many worry their teachers will be fired en masse and their courses and books will be policed. It’s increasingly hard to focus on their studies.
For years, students have come to this public liberal arts college on the western coast of Florida because they were self-described free thinkers. Now they find themselves caught in the crosshairs of America’s culture war.
Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has targeted the tiny school on the shores of Sarasota Bay as a staging ground for his war on “woke.” The governor and his allies say New College, a progressive school with a prominent LGBTQ+ community, is indoctrinating students with leftist ideology and should be revamped into a more conservative institution.
Students and faculty say America should take note because the transformation at New College could become a blueprint with national implications as DeSantis gears up for a likely presidential bid.
“I’m sorry, but this isn’t an indoctrination facility. This isn’t a factory that pumps out, you know, non-binary communists,” says Viv Cargille, 20, a marine biology major from Miami. She is passionate about researching dolphin acoustics but finds it mentally exhausting to focus on classes in a climate she describes as turbulent, volatile and anxiety-inducing.
Her roommate Olivia Pare, a second-year biology major, wishes the politicians would leave their school alone. “My biggest frustration is the way it is impacting my education. I am here to learn. I am not here to be more woke — whatever that is,” Pare said. When she does research in the organic chemistry lab, “we’re not talking about organic chemistry anymore — we’re talking about whether my professor will get her tenure approved.”
In January, DeSantis and his allies overhauled the 13-member Board of Trustees and installed a majority of conservative figures. The new trustees promptly fired the college president and replaced her with a Republican politician, the first of several administrators to lose their jobs. Next, they dismantled the office of diversity and equity. They have not revealed future plans but trustees have posted vague warnings on social media like: “You will see changes in 120 days.”
Changes so far have come in tandem with a new bill DeSantis unveiled Jan. 31 aimed at overhauling higher education in Florida. The bill would ban gender studies majors and minors, eliminate diversity programs and any hiring based on diversity, weaken tenure protections and put all hiring decisions in the hands of each university’s board of trustees.
The effect at New College has been chilling and disruptive. Students and faculty compare the upheaval to a “hostile takeover” that feels even more jarring because of what the school has represented to so many students for so many years: a haven of open-mindedness and acceptance in a place of idyllic beauty, with palm-tree-lined paths along a stretch of white-sand coast.
“It felt very much like New College was a little bubble in Florida,” said Willem Aspinall, 19, an environmental studies major who grew up in a Chicago suburb. “Now it feels like that has kind of been burst. The campus feels a lot less safe now.”
Students and faculty are afraid of one thing most of all: The extinction of New College as they know it.
They are not wrong to worry.
One of the new trustees is Christopher Rufo, a fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute and architect of the right-wing outrage against critical race theory, a legal term that has come to represent teaching about the ongoing effects of slavery. Rufo actively posts on social media about his vision for the future of New College, often in militaristic terms. He has referred to new trustees at the public institution as the “landing team,” saying, “We got over the wall,” and referencing an operation to “recapture” the college.
New College has its problems. The college performs poorly in certain state metrics, including a decline in enrollment until last year. Students complain of mold in dorms, broken elevators and other delayed maintenance because of years of underfunding. Some students say they would welcome more conservative students to balance the left-leaning student body. DeSantis and the new trustees cite the challenges as justification for the state intervention.
“We will be shutting down low-performing, ideologically-captured academic departments and hiring new faculty,” Rufo said in one tweet. “The student body will be recomposed over time: some current students will self-select out, others will graduate; we’ll recruit new students who are mission-aligned.” He and others have posted plans to “redesign the curriculum” with a goal of making the school more politically conservative.
Some students are fleeing, for schools that feel safer. Many on campus have voiced a concern that the politically charged spotlight on their school could invite danger. Several professors who asked not to be named are sending out resumes. Trustee meetings have become a focal point of student protests, and the only source of information on the school’s fate.
New College has long been an anomaly in a state filled with large public universities. It has barely 700 students, no fraternities or sororities and no football team. It is Florida’s designated honors college and produces an impressive number of the state’s Fulbright scholars. It has a uniquely self-directed curriculum that allows students to design individualized majors. The average class size is 11 students. There are no letter grades; students get detailed “narrative evaluations” as part of a pass-fail system.
The academic freedom is mirrored by a student body that feels free to express itself, say students and faculty, who describe New College as a haven for brainy kids who are high-achieving and intellectually curious. Some were the quiet kids in high school, or were bullied for being queer or different, or struggled socially because of autism or other disabilities. Some were homeschooled or come from alternative educational backgrounds that led them to be self-directed in their schooling. They arrived at New College and felt welcome in a way they never had before, say parents, students and faculty.
There is a long table in the center of the New College dining hall that epitomizes the school’s culture of acceptance, according to several students. People sitting there invite newcomers to come join them. Anyone walking in knows they never need to eat alone.
“It is one of the most unique places I think that exists in American higher education,” says Elizabeth C. Leininger, a neuroscientist and associate biology professor, who knows all her students by name. She compares an education at New College to small, private liberal arts schools at a fraction of the cost. In-state tuition at New College is $7,000 and out-of-state is $30,000, but many students get scholarships that cut tuition by at least half.
For the first time in her academic career, Leininger is wondering if some of her courses, like “Sex, Gender, Mind and Brain,” will court trouble.
“I would have to think very carefully about how I am going to teach that class now,” said Leininger, a graduate of Swarthmore College who did her Ph.D. at Columbia University, where she also taught. Like other faculty, Leininger is using personal email or encrypted messaging platforms when discussing the upheaval, fearing school email accounts will be subpoenaed. “There is very much a policing of ideas.”
Students, too, have shifted conversations on organizing protests to encrypted platforms like Signal and Slack to ensure privacy, says Gaby Batista, 19, an anthropology major who has taken personal precautions as well. “I’ve made my Instagram private and took off my pronouns.”
For parents who have felt the intense heartache of watching their child struggle and then the deep relief of seeing them thrive, the upheaval at New College is making them relive a painful past.
Psychologist Joyce White calls the experience “devastating” and “destabilizing” for the parents and students, particularly those who endured childhood bullying only to find themselves again feeling targeted. White’s daughter, Lola, is a third-year biology major at New College with plans to be a veterinarian. Lola is autistic, has ADHD and “lives in a constant state of anxiety,” her mother said. Ever since she was a child, Lola excelled at school but found it very stressful. She has difficulty adapting to change and feeling like she belongs. Until fifth grade, Lola threw up every day on the way to school, her mother said. The pandemic wreaked havoc on her mental health and disrupted Lola’s college plans. She attended community college online for two years, before transferring in the fall of 2022 to New College.
“We found this little school that was perfect for Lola,” said White, who moved her family from Minnesota to Sarasota to ease Lola into college. It wasn’t easy at first, adjusting to the Florida heat and to in-person classes, but Lola was settling in. She loved her small classes at New College and the ability to meet professors one-on-one. Her confidence was growing, which made her less introverted. She felt safe, and one day she joked with another student that she had no friends. The student responded, “You’re our friend,” and invited Lola to study with her group at the library.
“I felt like I could connect to the people here. The kids are accepting – of anyone. There is no judgment,” said Lola. She was amazed at the resources the school offered to help students who were struggling. She was assigned an academic adviser, a career coach and a special adviser for transfer students. “When I told them I was struggling, they reached out even more. No one has ever done that for me before in education,” Lola said, seated beside her mother at sunset on a recent evening along the school’s private beach.
“It’s been such a long road, and I finally felt like I could see light at the end of the tunnel,” said White, who recognizes in herself feelings of anxiety and depression as she worries if Lola will find her path again. “Now it feels like everything has blown up.” She adds, “I’m trying to put on a brave face for her.”
Two of Lola’s friends are transferring out of New College. Lola has struggled lately with panic attacks, stress and difficulty concentrating on schoolwork. But for now, she plans to stay. “I can do it, but there will be repercussions on my mental health.”
Meanwhile, students and faculty are noticing new restrictions they worry are aimed at curtailing freedom of expression. Faculty received a memo recently with new recommended guidelines for email signatures: They “should only include” name, title, college address, logo and phone number, which faculty see as a ruling that disallows pronouns. An event known as V.I.P. Weekend that was organized by the diversity and equity office to host prospective students overnight was also abruptly canceled. And maintenance crews recently were instructed to wash away chalk drawings and messages that covered a campus overpass, part of a longstanding tradition of eclectic artwork and expression. Many of the chalk messages voiced outrage at DeSantis and the new trustees or carried messages of support, such as: “Diversity is our strength.”
Faculty are advising students to concentrate on schoolwork and block out the noise, but it’s hard to shake the feeling that the worst is yet to come, said Aspinall, the environmental studies major.
“I’m concerned they’re going to take a school that does not indoctrinate students and turn it into a school that does.”

2023.04.02 01:29 tengrrl CFP: Special issue of College English

College English Special Issue
Heeding the Call: Insurgent Creativity, Eternal Stories, and Extending the Legacy of Critical Race Theory
Guest Editor: Aja Y. Martinez
Call for Papers
This fraught political moment has been characterized, in part, by an attack on the movement of legal storytelling most often referred to as Critical Race Theory (CRT). Throughout the movement’s history, CRT-related scholars have reached out to the Humanities, especially English Studies (inclusive of Literature, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric & Writing Studies). Now is the time to collectively respond to their call. Scholars in the Humanities have the tools to recognize the most recent attack on CRT as the marketing and branding exercise it is. We know that it is insufficient to point out how the opposition gets CRT wrong. Their story about CRT (although based on lies and inaccuracies) has already been too persuasive. As English Studies scholars, we know that we must fight story with story. More to the point, we must fight tall tales, myths, and presuppositions with the truth only stories can reveal.
Through their stories, legal storytelling exemplars such as Richard Delgado, Jean Stefancic, Patricia J. Williams, and Derrick A. Bell tell us (but also their field and any other field or person who has read their work) that story is how to do this work—story is the way. Telling stories is how we invite a multiplicity of audiences into the conversation, how we build opportunities for points of access to the content, be it the Constitution, theory, legal precedent, etc. The methodology of story in turn informs how we, as teachers of reading and writing, teach people to write their stories. Our broad field of English Studies includes contributions to concepts such as world building, dialogue, character development, style, diction, etc. Ours is the discipline of writing process and revision, reading and analysis, of rhetorical situation and effectiveness. We know how to compose; we know how to engage an audience; we know how to teach others to do this as well. Who better to take on this charge and carry it forward than us, English Studies? We have the tools, the equipment, the training, the lens, to engage this conversation on counterstory, the counterstories that will counter the stories the racist, radical right would weave and tell to disinform the public about CRT.
Our field can rise to the occasion, supporting CRT in this time of struggle. We are leaders in a conversation about the core questions of American society. Through our field’s unique Humanities-informed approach to the methodology of counterstory we can resource, equip, and contribute to the sustainability of CRT for years to come. But we must get it right. Our work as counterstory scholars, teachers, and writers in English Studies must be meticulous and precise. Any work we do with counterstory must be informed by the tenets of CRT. It cannot be sloppy work—it cannot be devoid of the interdisciplinary research involved in doing the reading, an awareness of the histories and key figures, knowing the foundations of CRT as an academic field and movement.
In the past two and half years of this mainstream, hot-button national fight, the urgency of storytelling through the methodology of counterstory has been underutilized by those seeking to defend and promote Critical Race Theory. It is time for scholars in the Humanities—scholars of English Studies in particular—to heed the call for collaboration issued by CRT founders and legal storytelling exemplars Delgado, Stefancic, Williams, and Bell. It is time to take back the narrative from those who would promote distortion and disinformation. It is time to extend the storytelling legacy of CRT, writing our own stories so others can be told.

2023.04.01 23:43 BitcoinRealtor Hardcore day 1

From a player that:
•plays every day •d3 hardcore superhuman conquest (and many other top 10 hardcore conquests and top 10 leaderboards •immortal challenge rift 10 world first (eternal conflict server)
What the hell is hardcore pvp going to be like? I assume you have to flag your self.
Sorc has a cheat death passive no 1 else?
Will 3rd party programs and auto hot key separate the meta? Why would blizz allow this.
Why no solo league/ solo self found?
Is it going to be east and west American servers again and Europe and Asia? And/or layers of the zones?
Why is meta restart dungeon… should be 1min cooldown between dungeons.
Mount move speed?
What’s with the scroll of escape instant cast? Also abused by auto hot key and or 3rd party programs.
Hardcore pvp doesn’t have to be permanent…

2023.04.01 23:23 BigAssQuanta Woke colleges

By — Jocelyn Gecker, Associated Press
Desantis war on ‘woke’ colleges sparks fear among professors, students Education Mar 30, 2023 2:56 PM EDT SARASOTA, Fla.
READ MORE: Ahead of 2024 presidential bid, DeSantis calls for U.S. to follow Florida’s lead
In January, DeSantis and his allies overhauled the 13-member Board of Trustees and installed a majority of conservative figures. The new trustees promptly fired the college president and replaced her with a Republican politician. Next, they dismantled the office of diversity and equity.
Students and faculty compare the upheaval to a “hostile takeover.” It feels even more jarring because the school is for many students a haven of open-mindedness and acceptance in a place of idyllic beauty, with palm-tree-lined paths along a stretch of white-sand coast.
“It felt very much like New College was a little bubble in Florida,” said Willem Aspinall, 19, an environmental studies major who grew up in a Chicago suburb. “Now it feels like that has kind of been burst. The campus feels a lot less safe now.”
One of the new trustees is Christopher Rufo, a fellow at the conservative Manhattan Institute and architect of the right-wing outrage against critical race theory, a legal term that has come to represent teaching about the effects of slavery. Rufo actively posts on social media about his vision for the future of New College, often in militaristic terms. He has referred to new trustees at the public institution as the “landing team,” saying, “We got over the wall,” and talking of an operation to “recapture” the college.
New College has its problems. Enrollment was declining until last year. Students complain of mold in dorms, broken elevators and other delayed maintenance. Some students say they would welcome more conservative students. DeSantis and the new trustees cite the challenges as justification for the state intervention.
READ MORE: Florida Republicans advance bills on gender identity, defamation
Some students are fleeing, for schools that feel safer. Several professors who asked not to be named are sending out resumes.
New College has long been an anomaly in a state filled with large public universities. It has barely 700 students, no fraternities or sororities, and no football team.
They arrived at New College and felt welcome in a way they never had before.
Students and faculty are noticing new restrictions they worry are aimed at curtailing freedom of expression. Faculty received a memo recently with new recommended guidelines for email signatures. They say the signature “should only include” name, title, college address and phone number, which faculty see as a ruling that disallows pronouns. An event known as V.I.P. Weekend that was organized by the diversity and equity office to host prospective students was abruptly canceled. And maintenance crews were recently instructed to wash away chalk drawings and messages that covered a campus overpass. Many of the chalk messages voiced outrage at DeSantis and the new trustees or carried messages of support, such as: “Diversity is our strength.”
Faculty are advising students to concentrate on schoolwork and block out the noise, but it’s hard to shake the feeling the worst is yet to come, said Aspinall, the environmental studies major.
“I’m concerned they’re going to take a school that does not indoctrinate students and turn it into a school that does.”

2023.04.01 22:49 TemporaryGospel 32 Draft Stories in 32 days -- Cincinnati Bengals

I've been digging in to the history of the draft for the last few weeks, for fun, and I've come across really really interesting draft picks over the years! If people still keep reading, I want to make one of these a day, each day, until the draft. This is day number 7, so it's time to mock the...
Cincinnati Bengals
Mike Ferrell called Andre Smith the best high school o-line prospect since Orlando Pace. Rivals.com had him at the top tackle. He was considered to be the very best run blocker of a generation. He was *cannot miss* talent. He went to Alabama and became the fourth ever true freshman to start on the Alabama line. One service named him an all-American. His sophomore year, when Saban showed up, he won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy and was named first team all-SEC, and was a Playboy All-American. His junior year, he won the Outland Trophy, was named a unanimous All-American, and only allowed 6 QB pressures on 334 passing plays, in a season where he was only penalized twice. He made John Parker Wilson look good. He caught a pass. He was mocked at #1 in the draft the entire year.. Other than a QB needy team grabbing Stafford, nothing is stopping him from going 1st overall, right?
But the 2009 NFL draft rolls around, the Bengals grab Andre Smith at #6, and the next day, all of Cincinnati media acts like he’s an existential threat. Every headline is about the crazy risk that the Bengals took, as everyone offers crazy guesses what will happen.
What happened? How did we get here?
First, Smith got suspended from his bowl game for his contact with an agent. Back in a time when playing bowl games seemed to matter. Uh oh! He did some damage control, made the now foregone conclusion to declare for the draft, and hoped that people didn’t remember that on draft night. After all, he’s supposed to be a generational tackle.
Then the combine happened. Dude came in at 332 pounds, admitted he was out of shape, ran a 5.32 40 (incidentally, I’m in shape and I run a 5.34 40, neither here nor there)… and decided to run it without a shirt for some reason. Kind of an all-timer. You can see it here. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1718615-andre-smiths-40-yard-dash-is-still-the-best-40-yard-dash. Why without a shirt? Why not? Despite his supposedly herculean strength, he kind of bombs the bench press (according to a lot of keyboard warriors who wouldn’t get close to his scores– and often lost in the noise is that having longer arms makes it harder to put up big bench press numbers– Smith was such a good college lineman in part because of his crazy long arms). He interviews poorly. He’s pretty obviously out of shape. So, he leaves.
And the responsible person he told that he was leaving… uh… well, he didn’t tell anyone he was leaving the combine early. The national story is “where’s Andre Smith? Did a UFO take him?” Far too late, he turns up later saying he left the combine early to prepare for his Pro Day. But he was a punchline and then he was missing, and that was the national narrative.
AL.com, which is obviously very pro-Bama, said that the question wasn’t if his draft stock fell, but by how much. BleacherReport had him now, not at 3, but at the third lineman in their final mock. The Guardian mocked him as the third lineman, and their writeup began “whoever takes Smith is taking a gamble.” Kiper put him at 13th, saying that he can’t manage his weight, which an LT needs to do. McShay mocked him to the Niners at 10th, saying that it would take a great coach like Mike Singletary to keep Andre motivated. (Can I please have McShay’s job?) Andre’s sure looking like he’s out of the top-10.
Then stories started coming out that he was pushing the scales to 370 between seasons. And then the long-awaited Pro Day happened, where he was going to shut everyone up. He didn’t– he didn’t leave half way through and he kept his shirt on for his 40. But he didn’t really do better beyond that.
Draft night happens and by then everyone knows Stafford is going to the Lions first. Then the Rams, who desperately need linemen help, are up. And they take Jason Smith, who’s never done a three point stance before, and he’s out of the league in four years. It was kind of unthinkable before the combine that Andre could fall even this far, but here we are. People are wondering about his character, his physical ability, how much he cares, his personality, everything.
But the Bengals snag the man at 6th! Despite everything that’s happened, they go “big man block good” and they decide to make it work. And are repaid in kind when Smith– well– holds out a month for more money and misses training camp. He failed to stay in game shape in the holdout, and broke his foot in a non-contact play before the season ever began.
He went on to have a meaningful career, he was the starter by his third year, went to a second contract with the Bengals, and started most of their games for five years in a row. Not the expectation at Bama, but better than the lineman taken above him. But the unbelievable saga of the combine, the jokes, the bad pro day, the slide, and the injury were an incredible spectacle and probably one of the most memorable Bengals picks in the last few decades.
Honorable mention: I think I’m going to bring up 1999 like four times this series– but the Bengals turned down 9 draft picks, including two firsts, in order to take the third QB off the board, Akili Smith. And while it was a reasonable pick at the time, the Bengals traded up to get Ki-Jana Carter with the 1st overall pick, and he suffered a career-altering injury just three plays into the first preseason game. Steve McNaire was one of the next picks.
Day 1 - The Cardinals make an unconventional pick at 8th
Day 2 - Falcons GM Norm van Brocklin likes movies
Day 3 - The Ravens select a QB off of some unique criteria
Day 4 - The Bills find that the three rules for a QB is that you don't get them wet, get them cold, or feed them after midnight
Day 5 - Jimmy Clausen
Day 6 - The Bears lose a Carla-Jean-Moss-amount in a coin-flip

2023.04.01 22:29 PrestigiousDamage773 Do Little people exist? According to Native Americans they do.

Have a good read everyone link to the video https://youtu.be/CN9WGasPih0

Little people in the American West and the Perdo Mountain Mummy
The oral traditions of several Native American tribes, such as the Arapaho, Sioux, Cheyenne, and Crow, contain stories of "little people" who range in height from 20 inches to three feet. Referred to as "tiny people eaters" in some tribes, they were believed to be spirits and healers in others, while some regarded them as magical beings, similar to leprechauns or fairies. These legends were widespread among the indigenous peoples of America long before the arrival of Europeans.
In Wyoming, the Shoshone Indians knew this diminutive race as the Nimerigar, and their legends depicted the little people as attacking the Shoshone with miniature bows and poisoned arrows. Additionally, the Nimerigar reportedly killed their own kind by striking them in the head when they became too unwell to participate actively in their society. While this practice was also part of the legends, it was a regular occurrence for many nomadic Indian tribes.
Despite the widespread belief that these "little people" are purely mythical, several findings suggest otherwise. One of the most notable discoveries was the fully-formed mummy measuring 14 inches in length, known as the Pedro Mountains Mummy. In 1932, two men were prospecting for gold in the San Pedro Mountains approximately 60 miles southwest of Casper, Wyoming when they discovered the mummy.
Despite their efforts to extract gold from a vein in the San Pedro Mountains, Cecil Main and Frank Carr found themselves continually thwarted by rock. In a bid to reach the gold, they resorted to using dynamite to blast a section of the mountainside. This caused a cave to be revealed, which was approximately 15 feet long and 4 feet high, and had been sealed off from the outside world by a thick wall of rock.
Upon entering the cave, the two men were astonished to discover a small, pygmy-like man seated cross-legged on a ledge. The tiny mummy measured only around 6 ½ inches tall in its seated position and was estimated to be 14 inches tall when standing. Its skin was wrinkled and brown, with a low and flat forehead, heavy-lidded eyes, and a wide mouth with thin lips, resembling the face of an elderly man. Despite its small size, the mummy was well-preserved, with visible fingernails on its hands and a dark jelly-like substance covering the top of its head, which remained pliable even after all those years.
Upon discovering the mummy, the two prospectors took it to Casper, Wyoming, and it soon attracted the attention of scientists from all over the country. Initially skeptical that it was a hoax, experts conducted extensive tests on the mummy, suspecting that it may have been a taxidermy creation made from different animal parts. However, they were astounded to find that x-rays revealed a perfectly formed human-like skeleton. The tests also indicated that the mummy had met a violent end, as its spine was damaged, its collarbone was broken, and its skull had been severely fractured by a heavy blow. The soft substance found on the top of the mummy's head was identified as brain tissue and congealed blood. Based on the results of these tests, scientists estimated that the mummy was a fully-grown adult who had died at around 65 years of age. One unusual finding was that the mummy's teeth were unusually pointed, with a full set of canines.
According to some reports, the examinations were carried out by the American Museum of Natural History and certified as genuine by the Anthropology Department of Harvard University. However, other accounts suggest that the mummy was later examined by the University of Wyoming, which concluded that it was the body of a deceased child.
It is worth noting that claims of the discovery of remains or skeletons of small-statured people in North America are often met with skepticism from mainstream archaeologists and anthropologists. Many of these claims lack scientific evidence, and some have been proven to be hoaxes. However, the existence of legends and oral traditions about "little people" in various Native American cultures suggests that there may be some basis in reality for these stories. As with many aspects of pre-Columbian history, the truth may never be fully known.
The story of the Pedro Mountains Mummy is a fascinating and mysterious one. While some believe it to be a hoax or simply a misidentified specimen, the scientific examinations and tests performed on the mummy seem to indicate that it was a genuine, albeit unusual, discovery. The legend of the "little people" is one that has persisted for centuries among Native American tribes, and the discovery of the Pedro Mountains Mummy only adds to the mystery and intrigue surrounding these stories.

“You don’t have much time.” Shuri paced the width of the downed Wakandan transport and back again, stopping for a moment to stare out the jagged hole in its flank. Behind her, the hazy bulb of light on the horizon, perhaps Chicago, perhaps a smaller, closer city, drove the twinkling stars away.
“I have to bring you home. That is my duty, but then you show me this,” she said, gesturing to the Vibranium Atlas displayed on the cracked screen. As they looked at it, it began to flicker.
“We need to download that,” Ross said. “Main power is failing.”
T’Challa was already on it. As he tapped buttons in sequence, the Atlas faded and was replaced by a progress bar that swiftly filled from left to right.
“See? And we didn’t even have to ‘sweat it out’ at ninety-nine percent like in your American action movies.”
As he said that, the lights went dead around them, and the computer blinked off.
“American action movies are what prepared me for all of this,” Ross laughed. “I’ve been on the road with Chuck Norris of Wakanda for the last year.”

“I am still somewhat weakened, but I am regaining strength quickly,” T’Challa said. “Okoye may not be so lucky, as she is not empowered by the herb.”
Okoye huffed an obscenely annoyed breath. “Losing half my blood brought me down to your level!”
T’Challa laughed. It was a good sound that put the rest of the crew at ease. It put him at ease as well. Even Shuri cracked a half-smile, though it didn’t last long.
“The Council knows that we have tracked you. They may believe that it took some time to catch you, but they won’t believe that you got away for good. They will be expecting us home within twenty-four hours.”
“And yet, we will not be going home, and they will believe that we got away for good,” T’Challa said.
Shuri’s eyebrows went up with interest. “So you have a plan.”
“I had a plan. Once the Atlas was complete, I was going to return to Wakanda and convince the Council to track down any significant stores of Vibranium that existed outside our borders. Now, however…”
“You are preoccupied with the line that extends…” Shuri thought about her words carefully. “Off the map.”
“Hence the new plan,” T’Challa said. “We are going to find it.”
Shuri blinked, taken aback. “Find it?”
T’Challa nodded, his eyes gleaming. “We are going to find it.”
“What…what about,” Shuri was now searching for words. “What about Nakia?”
She hit upon the hardest one first. T’Challa flinched, but replied, “I have done nothing but fail that woman. I can’t imagine she even wants to see me.”
“That’s not true,” Shuri said.
“She shouldn’t want to. It is better to give her space for now.”
“Mm,” Shuri said. She gave a hard glance at Okoye, who kept a calm, defiant face. “All right then. What if it goes to the Moon? The Council won’t give you a shuttle.”
T’Challa shook his head. “It is not on the Moon, or even near it. It reaches far, far past our orbit, our moon, even our solar system. Not even Wakanda has a shuttle that can take me that far.”
“Well then, how are you going to go out there?” Shuri asked.
“Uh, she has a point,” Ross said, while Okoye nodded.
“A friend of mine has such a ship,” T’Challa said simply.
“Who?” Ross asked. “You don’t mean Reed Richards?”
“I do.”
“You think he’s just going to give us his spaceship?”
“Of course not,” T’Challa said. “We are going to steal it.”
Nobody seemed to like that idea very much.
“Are you insane?” Okoye said, berating him. “You know what that man is capable of.”
“I don’t actually know what Richards is capable of,” Ross said, “but that scares me even more.”
Shuri shook her head firmly. “You’ll never get it out of there. Doesn’t he have all of his…technology in orbit anyway?”
“Not all of it,” T’Challa said. “The Badoon ship he used to travel the cosmos…not only has Reed restored it to working order, it is in the hangar at the Baxter Building.”
Ross whistled through his teeth. “Look, T’Challa. I said I’d go through anything with you, right?”
T’Challa nodded. “You have acted with great loyalty and bravery, Agent Ross.”
Ross took a deep breath. “You should know, this isn’t any different. If you say we’re storming the Baxter Building, then that’s what we’re doing.”
Okoye nodded. “We are pledged to even your most suicidal of half-baked schemes.”
Ross almost patted her on the shoulder, and then he thought better of it. He looked at T’Challa. “Just tell us you have a really good plan.”

_______________________________________________

The next morning: New York City
Sun streamed across the vast floor of the Baxter Building’s hangar, a hundred and twenty stories above the streets. The wind whipped up here, the air cold with a bite, but Susan Storm didn’t feel it. Protected by a partial bubble of invisible force, she lounged on a patio chair in shorts and a buttoned shirt, her hair flowing freely and brushing the ground as she leaned back. A half-finished mimosa sat on the ground, just within reach. A biotech journal lay open on her stomach.
“Hey, Sis?” Johnny Storm, her younger brother, called out from the exit to the main building. His voice echoed within the hangar, but it was almost lost to the wind before it reached Sue.
“Hm?” she sat up, shielding her eyes from the sun.
Johnny walked halfway out to her. “Sorry to bother you. Uh, just looking for…”
Sue sighed. “What? Do the kids need something?”
“No, HERBIE has the kids.”
“Well then what is it?”
“Kinda lost a…”
What, Johnny?”
Johnny laughed weakly and scratched his head. “A brunette.”
Sue sat up. “Another one?”
“Well, they get up in the morning, and they want to leave,” Johnny said defensively, “or they don’t, but HERBIE scares them, and Reed didn’t put exit directions up like he’s supposed to. It’s a fire hazard, Sue. That’s what it is.”
Sue put her magazine down on the ground and stood up. “Okay, where did you last see her?”
Johnny started to turn red.
“Are you twelve? You know, this wouldn’t happen if you would just walk them out.”
“Well! Well…” Johnny’s mouth worked as he searched for words. “I just…um…wait. What’s that?”
Sue turned around, sighing again in annoyance, but she stopped when she saw it, too. There was an extra shadow on the hangar floor, shaped like another aircraft…There was something hovering above the hangar!
“Johnny, hit the alarm.” As she said it, several figures dropped from above on the hangar floor. They landed easily, four of them, silently, their dark profiles making them seem like mere shadows themselves.
One of them stepped forward, halfway out of the light so that his features could be seen.
“T’Challa?” Johnny said.
T’Challa pointed. “Steal it! Steal the ship! Steal it before they catch us!” The rest of his group ran for one of the vehicles in the hangar.
“What the actual hell!” Johnny yelled. He immediately burst into flame, and blasted off after them. The sudden burst of hot air blew hard against Sue, making her hair fly up and causing her to stumble back.
“Gah! Johnny,” she coughed. When she looked up, T’Challa’s team had already flown out over the city, and Johnny had gone after them. But it didn’t make sense. “Why would T’Challa steal the Fantasticar?”

_____________________________________________

The Fantasticar, though seemingly not much more than a platform with seats on it, was as agile as any aircraft. In many ways, it was superior. Inertial dampeners made sharp corners easy and smoothed the bumps out during hard acceleration. As the Fantasticar looped and slid between the skyscrapers of New York, evading the Human Torch, it acted more like a dragonfly than the clunky box it appeared to be.
Shuri looked back at the furious orange flame dogging them. “I am going to give you credit and assume this was part of your plan.”
The Human Torch flung a huge fireball at them, but T’Challa swerved to dodge it easily. It went straight up into the air and exploded in a ball of smoke and light.
Okoye looked like she was having less fun than anyone. Indeed, anyone who really knew her could tell that the rough ride, combined with her recent injuries, was making her sick as a dog. T’Challa shot her a concerned look, but she waved him away.
“I’m sure space travel will be much easier,” she said, wheezing a laugh.
“Speaking of,” Shuri said. “How do you make this thing go into space? It does not look like a spaceship.”
T’Challa opened his mouth to speak, but just then there was a bump that shook the entire Fantasticar. They all looked around to find the source. No one had joined them. Johnny was still cursing them out from behind.
There was suddenly drag in the controls. They were losing speed. T’Challa banked and the ship was sluggish. “Shuri, take the controls,” T’Challa said, as he magnetized his boots and gloves.
Before she even grabbed the stick, T’Challa had already secured his helmet, swung over the side, and latched on to the bottom of the Fantasticar. He hung there with both feet and one hand, the wind and inverted view threatening vertigo, but he shook it off. There were giant spiderwebs all over the bottom of the Fantasticar. He wasn’t alone down there.
“Uh, how are you doing that?” asked Spider-Man. He was standing on the bottom of the vehicle as well, but on the balls of his feet, almost casually, as if they were meeting on the sidewalk. Well, he had tempted fate, and fate had taken the bait. Planning a heist over the New York skyline in the middle of the morning had attracted exactly who he feared it would.
T’Challa growled and freed his other hand.
Spider-Man crossed his arms and tilted his head slightly. “Listen pal, if we can just be honest for a second. I know a heist when I see one.” The Fantasticar swerved hard, and a jet of flame blew through the air beneath them. T’Challa could feel the heat through his suit.
Spider-Man didn’t seem bothered at all. “Hoo boy,” he said, clapping his hands together. “How long before one of those ends up taking out some innocent falafel stand? You know, I know the Human Torch. Well, I mean, I don’t actually know him, but I see him on TV all the time, you know–actually, half the girls in the city know him better than I do. Okay, that kind of sounds like I’m slut-shaming. Him! Not the girls.” Spider-Man put out a hand defensively, explaining himself. “I’m slut-shaming Johnny. I mean, I’m just saying that I thought this was a paparazzi thing, and then I realized that Johnny was the one chasing you, and I thought, geez I hope the girl he’s with is okay. Is she up top? Is she the the muscly-looking…” he did a little body-building pose, “that one?”
“What are you doing down here?” There was a sudden burst of light and heat as the Human Torch joined them. The Fantasticar started to swerve again as Shuri tried to tell where he was.
Spider-Man pointed at Johnny. “Hey! You!” He cleared his throat. “You’re the fantastic guy with…the Torch!”
“The Human TorchI Are you with this guy?”
Spider-Man shook his head. “No way! I think he stole this…uh…flying car.”
“Yeah, he stole the Fantasticar!” Johnny replied.
“Fantasticar! That’s such a cool name.”
“Nah, it’s lame. But he can’t steal it.” The two of them shared a glance.
“Superhero team up?” Spider-Man said.
Johnny nodded with a huge grin. “Superhero team up! Let’s get him–hey, where’d he go?”
As both of the young heroes looked around wildly, T’Challa cut off the rest of the webbing and returned to the top of the Fantasticar. He grabbed the controls from Shuri.
“Hang on!” he yelled, and he yanked the stick. The Fantasticar hit a hard bank that turned into a tight spiral. It was a move that would have been deadly for any conventional aircraft, but Reed Richards’s design was a generation ahead of anything conventional. He spied the Torch spinning away behind them as they dove for the ground, and at the last second, he pulled them back up, shooting for the sky. Four seconds later, they cleared the tops of the skyscrapers and blasted into the open air. T’Challa breathed a sigh of relief. There was no way the Spider was still clinging to the bottom.
“This thing is incredible,” Spider-Man said from behind him. “Well…fantastic? I guess that’s the pun. What kind of EM field is keeping you guys in your seats?”
T’Challa turned without warning and struck with blinding speed, swiping with hard strength for a gouge across Spider-Man’s chest. The hero moved an instant before T’Challa struck, and the swipe missed by a hair’s width.
Spider-Man responded with a quick jab of his own, and T’Challa was almost off balance enough to take it on the chin. He just managed to dodge to the side, and he pivoted away, taking a defensive stance.
Spider-Man took a quick look at his fist. “That usually works. You’re not just some thug, are you?” Shuri and Okoye both stood at that. “Hey! Hey, just kidding,” he said, waving his hands in front of him. “I know you’re King T’Challa.” He leaned in a little. “By the way, do you have diplomatic immunity?”

Back in the hangar, Agent Ross watched as Susan Storm stood at the end of the launch platform and looked out over the city. He waited until she finally went back into the main building, and then he emerged from his hiding place and located the Badoon space cruiser. He moved quickly, running to one side to find the controls to unlock the moorings for the ship, disconnect the power, hydraulic, and fuel lines, and figure out how to taxi it to the launch platform.
Most of that was done by small helper bots, and Ross was able to move quickly through all of the computer systems because of T’Challa’s information. A year ago, the Black Panther had performed something of a stress test on Reed Richards’s security. He had broken through and given Reed instructions on how to improve, but not before downloading the bulk of the orbital lab’s files and installing his own backdoor into the system.
T’Challa had shrugged when telling them about it, like that kind of thing was no big deal. “If he really listened to what I told him, he would have found it.”
“Hard to lecture him about it now,” Ross muttered to himself. He tapped at his datapad, and was still a little shocked when it managed to connect with the cruiser’s system. Another tap, and the hatch opened.
“This guy thinks of everything,” Ross said, and he moved to climb into the cruiser.
“Hello, Agent Ross,” said a female voice, directly into his ear.
“Jesus!” Ross yelped as he jumped. He knew exactly who it was. It was her, the Invisible Woman. She was right next to him.
“Language, please. I grew up going to Sunday school, you know.”
“Yes, ma’am. Sorry.” That sounded bad. Might as well have called her mommy. Ross waited for the bump on the head, to wake up in a jail cell.
Sorry, T’Challa, he thought.
“Normally, I would turn an intruder over to the police. If Ben or Johnny didn’t get to them first, that is,” she said with a soft chuckle. She was speaking right into his ear, her breath giving him chills down his neck.
“Okay,” Ross said. “That sounds fair.” He let his free hand drift down near the data pad. Two taps would activate the floodlights. It might give him enough time to take off, or distract her. He could knock her out if he caught her off guard–
HIs entire body froze. He was suddenly wrapped in a forcefield the exact shape of his body.
“Let’s not get jumpy,” Sue said. “Normally, I would hand you over to the police, but you are right, Agent Ross. T’Challa really does think of everything. Take the ship and go.”
The force field vanished. “Really?” Ross said.
Sue kissed Ross on the cheek, just a peck. The chill intensified down his spine. “Just fill up the tank before you bring it back,” she said, and then she was gone.

The intelligence was true. T’Challa had scarcely believed it at first, but this Spider-Man really did have an extra sense. He dodged most of T’Challa’s blows easily, moving only after an attack was committed but with plenty of time to spare. What blows did land felt like he had punched a statue. He was superhumanly fast, and while T’Challa had managed to avoid his blows in return, his strength was clearly far, far beyond that of a normal human. Or a Black Panther, for that matter.
The only advantage T’Challa had was that he was fighting a novice. Spider-Man was clearly a young man, and his fighting experience was shallow. At the same age, T’Challa had nearly conquered the Feast of the Heart. This would essentially be a stalemate until one of them landed a solid blow.
The Human Torch still followed them. Shuri did her best with a small shield to deflect the flame he shot at them while Okoye tried to outfly him, but neither of them were going to succeed forever. The Torch just never ran out of flame, or clever insults, to hurl at them. T’Challa almost chuckled when he called them a “Saturday-Night-Live-mid-February-musical-guest-looking-bunch-of-scrubs.” Very creative for several minutes into a tirade like that.
On the top of the Fantasticar, the inertial dampeners kept them all from flying off, so T’Challa was able to fight with his full agility. He pressed as hard as he could, coming at Spider-Man with jabs and claw-tipped strikes. He did not want to seriously injure the young hero, but he knew he couldn't play defense. Spider-Man, in turn, acted like he was having a laugh.
“It’s a good thing Johnny and I are doing a team up,” he said, and then he called over his shoulder. “Can I call you Johnny?”
“No!”
Spider-Man shrugged. “I mean, without Johnny it would be three on one. Three on two is a lot better. You’re a great fighter. I’ve never fought anyone like you, really. Even though the ol’ Spidey sense is keeping me safe–” he spun to avoid a nasty kick from T’Challa and hopped back, “I have to watch out for you.”
A real fighter would have grabbed that kick and punished him for missing. T’Challa snarled and pushed forward, using a complicated series of blows designed to confuse, well, a person without a Spidey sense, but it worked well enough.
“Hey!” Spider-Man laughed, “can’t even get my webs off. If I get flung off and have to swing back up here, so help me.”
“Does he ever shut up?” Okoye asked over her shoulder.
“Hey! I’m starting to think that you’re not actually Johnny’s girlfriend.”
Okoye rounded to charge at him. “I’m no–”
Webbing hit her in the mouth and stuck her hand to the control panel. “There we go! I got a shot off after all.”
Okoye’s eyes were murderous as she fought against the webbing. Well, it was probably for the best that she was tied up, now.
Manhattan wasn’t exactly an enormous landmass, and the Fantsticar was capable of some impressive speed. Neither Spider-Man nor the Torch seemed to have noticed that they had essentially circled the city three times since the chase began. T’Challa had been waiting, trying to hold on until Agent Ross arrived.
He saw the Badoon ship in the distance, so sleek and oddly angular, as it descended towards them. Fifteen, twenty seconds, and they would be close enough.
Spider-Man noticed the shadow first, and then the Torch. They both backed off their attacks and looked up at the approaching ship.
“Hey wait, you stole that too?” Johnny exclaimed.
“What did they steal?”
“A spaceship! They stole our spaceship!” Spider-Man turned to T’Challa. “I thought you just stole their car.”
“I’m giving back the car,” T’Challa replied. “Sorry for this.”
“Sorry for wh–” Spider-Man began, before T’Challa hit him with the Umsiki wexesha.
T’Challa had been holding it back, knowing that if it worked, it would probably work only once. The two-step attack, the second hidden within a superhuman reaction time of the first, landed. Spider-Man stepped back from the fist, but the darting elbow caught him hard in the shoulder, knocking him aside. To T’Challa, it felt like he smashed his elbow into a brick wall.
He moved with Spider-Man’s momentum, pushing past him, and he grabbed his wrist. He aimed the web shooter and pressed the exact spot where he had seen the teen press to activate it a moment before. A stream of webbing shot out and wrapped out the Human Torch’s middle. His flame went out suddenly, and he started to fall.
“Hey!” Spider-Man exclaimed, and he yanked his hand back, lashing out with the other. T’Challa caught it on his own shoulder, and he was knocked back across the platform of the Fantasticar. Spider-Man advanced quickly, moving to end it, but then he realized what had happened. He glanced over the side of the ship.
“A king playing dirty,” he said. “Well now I’ve seen it all,” and he leaped over the side to save Johnny.
T’Challa struggled to his feet, and he cut Okoye free. Ross was close enough now. Shuri joined him, and T’Challa saw how sweaty she was from the heat of the flames. Soot smudged her skin and clothes.
He brought the Fantasticar down to a low speed and then waited for Okoye and Shuri to hop over onto the cruiser. They were still so high over the city, and both of them were exhausted, but neither showed a hint of fear or hesitation. T’Challa set the controls for the Fantasticar to return home, and then he boarded the spaceship as well. Ross took them up as soon as the hatch was closed. The city, the island, and the continent all receded, until they were well above the clouds, high enough that they could see the neon-blue curve of the Earth.

“Okay, so as far as team ups go, that wasn’t the best,” Spider-Man said. He lowered Johnny gently to the ground and started to tear the webbing off of him.
“Stand back,” Johnny said. With a burst of flame, he incinerated all of the webbing covering his body. “And no, it didn’t go well. Next time, let me fight the Black Panther and you can fight the girls.”
“I mean…” Spidey said, shrugging, and then his shoulders drooped. “I can’t believe he actually got me. What was that he hit me with?”
“Dunno,” Johnny said, brushing off web-ash from his clothes. “That guy has like a million tricks. He almost beat up my Skrull girlfrie–I mean, my friend, who is a Skrull, and who is a girl. Sometimes.”
“What’s a Skrull?”
From far down the street, police sirens began to blare. The two young men perked up.
“Sounds like a bank robbery,” Johnny said.
Spider-Man extended a fist. “Uh…team up, take two?”
Johnny bumped the fist quickly. “Race you there. Flame on!”

They landed the cruiser near Shuri’s transport. All of the Wakandan soldiers came out to admire the alien ship. The hatch opened, and Shuri stood looking down on them.
“It is hard…to be the Black Panther,” she said to T’Challa. “It is harder being your sister.”
T’Challa squeezed her arm, and then he pulled her in for a hug. “I know. I am a difficult sibling.”
“And son,” she said into his shoulder.
“And king,” he chuckled. He stepped back and handed her a data pad. “The Atlas is loaded onto this. You know something has to be done here on Earth.”
Shuri shook her head. “I don’t even know where to begin. Start small, I guess.”
“You will manage,” T’Challa said. “The three of us will manage as well.”
“I don’t understand,” Shuri said. “I get that this is some kind of adventure, but there has to be more to it. No mere impulse would send you to the stars. You don’t know what’s out there.”
T’Challa hesitated. “There…is more. I won’t say now. I will say that there is a mystery surrounding Vibranium, one that I believe we should have tried to solve generations ago. A monster like Klaw, the attention of Bast, the spirits of the seven Kings…it is more than just a meteor, more than just Wakanda’s luck.”
“I…I trust you, T’Challa, but there is still a Wakanda to protect, a Wakanda to rule.”
“You don’t need me for that,” he said.
“Then, I guess there is nothing more to say,” Shuri said.
T’Challa smiled down at his sister. “There is a lifetime of things left to say. Gather your adventures, and I will gather mine, and we will trade over the fire when I return.”

The bridge of the Badoon ship was meant for a crew of about ten, but Reed Richards had rigged it so that three or four could easily handle all of its functions. Ross sat in the captain’s chair as he guided the ship up into orbit. T’Challa sat at a control panel and monitored the engines, atmosphere, and various energy levels. Okoye was monitoring communications.
“Susan Storm showed up,” Ross blurted out. The blue sky in the viewscreen faded to black.
“Really.”
“She did, and instead of stopping me, she just let me take the ship. I thought I was a goner.”
T’Challa laughed. “And you want to know why you are not a goner.”
“I do!”
“It is a simple matter,” T’Challa said. “I am a rogue head of state…or a head of a rogue state, depending who you ask. If I asked for their spaceship, the Fantastic Four might just give it to me, because they are my friends, but the U. S. Government would…”
“Pitch a fit?” Okoye said. “That is how the Americans say it?”
Ross nodded and pointed at her.
“Yes, pitch…a fit. Something like that. So, I have to be seen stealing it.”
“You arranged that ahead of time? How?”
T’Challa shook his head. “I arranged nothing ahead of time.”
“Wait, you didn’t know if Sue was going to flatten me when I tried to take the ship?”
“No, you did not know if she was going to flatten you,” Okoye said.
“I knew she would let you go,” T’Challa added.
“But how?”
“I already told you how. I told you the first time I spoke of this plan. They are my friends.”
“Huh,” Ross said simply. He started setting nav coordinates.
“Being my friend is a very serious matter,” T’Challa said, with a play of a grin on his lips.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.”
Okoye looked back and forth between the two of them. “It is lunch time.”
Ross punched in a destination. “Lunch on the moon?”
T’Challa nodded. Inside, he was excited, bursting with anticipation, craving the adventure to come. Outside, he was as calm as he had been since…had there ever been a time he felt like this?
“Lunch on the moon.”
